Bingo Card: Part Five

Continuation of "Hold On To “What If”: Overanalyzing and Rewriting Sonic Prime" essay

[Once Again, spoilers for Sonic Prime, all media here belong to their respective creators.]

Shadow saving Sonic

ohshitwhatthehellishappening?!?!?!

ahem, uh so Shadow’s saving Sonic this time huh.

This is definitely going to be a parallel to S2 EP1 when Sonic saved Shadow from the Dark Abyss after Shadow failed to get into Boscage Maze. If there’s a callback to any of these lines, I die happily:

Sonic: “On the bright side, I’ll get to hold this over you forever.” [...] Sonic: "Together, we're gonna fix this." [...]

Transcript:

Sonic: “Man, you must really hate having to admit you need me” Shadow: “You need me” Sonic: “Sure, I’m big enough to admit that. But not as much as you need me.”

One thing I noticed in the Trailer (Dec. 16) was our Amy Rose (captions only said Rose but the voice kind of fits, here's a video to see what I mean: Link) says,

Rose: “Hurry! He’s not going to make it.”

This line can’t be talking about Sonic in this scene since Green Hill can’t peek into the Void so the question remains, what is Amy talking about here? For all we know, it doesn’t have to be Sonic, it could be Shadow or someone other than our hedgehogs.

…nope, I’m happy with what we got (i’m so normal). And I was wrong about the voice being Amy’s, it was Thorn oops.

Nine gets what he wanted + Shadow being the one to convince him to do it (unintentionally, then attempts to convince Nine to save the Shatterverse)

[PARALLEL TIME 2!! Also, I have to involve some of the canon lore for this.]

Nine will redeem himself, that’s only logical. But for him to acknowledge his own mistakes, he would have to see it for himself. From the Clip (Nov. 11) and other previous instances, Sonic tries to convince Nine to think differently by simply talking to him. In all of those times, he fails. BUT, remember when S1 EP 1 Sonic saved Nine from the train, it cracked through Nine, just enough to let Sonic show him that he’s serious. It just makes sense that, since he doesn’t trust anyone, Nine values ACTIONS over WORDS, as it is why he attaches himself to Sonic. Of course, Nine would be against Shadow since Shadow is the one trying to rebuild the Prism and would be the one to have Sonic go against Nine. It may be the push that would make Nine go along with creating his home in the Grim without hesitation, all because Shadow is basically taking his only (well sort-of) friend away from him. That’s why, I want to see Nine getting the world he wanted. Not only to see what Nine really wanted and to see the power of the Prism’s energy, but also for Nine to see why he shouldn’t have done it.

There is a great YT video by Raihani Julie (here’s the link, please go check it out), an animatic based on an angsty scene from the show Amphibia I think really fits. Nine has a good reason to dislike Sonic but he still cares for him, leaving him completely conflicted. So, if Nine did make his own world, he would recreate Sonic, one that agrees with Nine’s plans. He would then realize what he wanted wasn’t a new world, but a friend. Now, for this realization, Nine could do this by himself, but if someone has to be there to help convince him, I think the best option would be Shadow. (Yeah, remember the trust theory?)

💬 "Why?"

Yes, Shadow would be the last person you would expect to help Nine. But hear me out: it’s all based on this exchange alone,

Nine: “You’re not another version of Sonic. But you could be twins.” Shadow: “Hardly, I am the ultimate life form.“

It isn’t just a callback or a reference, this shows Shadow would probably be the only one who can relate to Nine.

Both of them have a lot in common:

1) they closed themselves off and lashed out at the world, believing everyone else doesn’t deserve to be “saved” due to their trauma (Shadow formerly having this way of thinking)

2) they have been confused about their identity. For the most part, they get confused for someone else, but also, what they are meant to be (Shadow being a weapon/robot/etc. and Nine being a threat)

3) they value ACTIONS over WORDS

And what made them change? The truth. If it weren’t for Sonic and his friends, Shadow may have not known what he promised Maria in SA2 and later one realized the truth behind his existence in the Shadow the Hedgehog game. Without the truth, he wouldn't be able to move on from his trauma. Sure, Sonic and Shadow don’t always meet eye-to-eye but they do have mutual respect for each other. For Nine, it was when Sonic saved him in the first EP, seeing that Sonic was being genuine with him, not out to get him.

So, a conversation between Nine and Shadow is possible. Because of the green Chaos Emerald, Shadow may not be affected by the Prism or he may have retrieved it from the Darkness before the final fight, either way works. Since the show showed the pixel origins of Sonic’s first encounters with Tails and Knuckles, they could show one for Shadow. (”It all starts with this…” ok I’m sorry…) Just as Shadow said back in S2 EP7, he doesn’t trust Nine. But he has also seen how much Sonic defended him. It was naive, but Sonic sees the good in people. At the end of all, especially if Shadow saw that Sonic learned to listen, Sonic is trying to do the right thing, even if stopping Nine hurts.

Possible Sonic "Look-Alikes"

(Refer back to the Connections section and the Ultimate Sacrifice box if needed)

All you need to know is that if Sonic makes to get back to Green Hill in time = possibility of Sonic’s “look-alikes” appearing after he gets back (that could explain the “Sonic gets shattered” part), but I don’t think Shadow would have “look-alikes” (BUT LET ME HOPE MAN, I WANNA SEE PIRATE SHADOW)

The Prism has been broken before

[So, we have to consider the canon timeline, again…]

Ever since S1, something has been bothering me about the Prism but I couldn’t put my finger on it. But, what got my theory being created was when the Trailer (Dec. 16) released, where it all started. In the end, where Shadow is in a hurry to take Sonic back to Green Hill, the portal gateway is green.

Now, it may be just to point out the obvious, that it’s Green Hill. Ok, side tangent: why is it green? Boscage Maze is already green, why then would there be two green portals? Wouldn’t it be logical for the portal to be a mix of the Prism colors? Green Hill = NOT Ghost Hill so it can’t be yellow. WHY GREEN??? Tangent over.

Anyway, I went down this mind rabbit hole from the portal design to questioning the existence of the Void before the incident. So, I went back to S1 EP1, and saw something interesting: notice how there are cracks in between each of the Shards, that are separating the colors?

It isn’t the same as the Shards’ edges, they looked like they were glued together. Someone broke Prism and fixed it before it was discovered by EP1. Rouge can actually support this:

Rouge: “You see, I’ve been searching for years for a super rare and shiny gem called the Paradox Prism. Legend speaks of untold power, and it’s buried deep within the Green Hill bedrock.”

Are we just going to brush past this, who had this information? If someone knew about this a long time ago, why share this secret with anyone (except probably to gloat that they have encountered it)? That will be for us to speculate, but the possibilty still stands that there was a whole different Green Hill before the one we know.

💬 "What does this have to do with the canon timeline?"

Back in S2 EP1, Shadow shows Sonic the Prism blueprint, and in EP7, Nine states that the Shards have to be perfectly placed, a slight error would change a huge part of reality.

Transcript:

Nine: It’s not that simple. The alignment must be perfect. The slightest variation could have massive repercussions. People, places, and things can be ripped from existence. One small mistake, and poof! Reality is changed forever.

If they manage to restore Green Hill, would it be the same as before or would it be a whole new Green Hill? Even if the Shards were “perfectly” placed, those would be the main Shards, they didn’t account for any of the smaller pieces that may have happened when Sonic crashed into the Prism. Who knows? Maybe we could get the version of Green Hill that’s in Sonic canon.

For the viewers who happened to be shippers, we all had a fine course of our preferred ships. Especially for the sonadow shippers, myself included. this show was practically sonadow propaganda and my god, it worked.

Label “X”: LOVE WINS!!! 💙 in all seriousness though, I am happy everyone got to feast on the shipping moments they were able to get. (yes I screamed in the "i heart you too" and the "never knew you were a hugger" scenes)

Nine initiates the Hug

We had a lot of moments of Sonic's way of showing affection to the ones he's closest to, including Nine. As much Nine isn't as affectionate, he lets Sonic do his thing. It's not just limited to hugs though, they also high-fived. I think this is a build-up to a moment when Nine is the one who hugs Sonic, most likely near the end of the season. It would be the last stage of vulnerability, letting his defenses down for Sonic.

“Home”

Sonic: “Home is where your friends are, as they say…”

This line will definitely come back around at the end, because it’s too unique for it not to. Probably at the end of the series.

SIDE RAMBLE: I just wanted to point out when Shadow tells Sonic:

Transcript:

Shadow: “Home doesn’t exist anymore. Because of you.”

[S1 EP8, S2 EP1]

It meant a lot more, “They don’t exist anymore. Because of you.” Also, when Sonic is taken to Ghost Hill and finds the ghosts of his gang, Shadow explains that its existence is:

Shadow: “A cruel version to make us suffer.”

There are people who still dub Ghost Hill as Green Hill, but it is very clear: Green Hill is gone for good (at least the one we had at the beginning of the series) and, in technicality, the gang is dead, all that is left are ghosts/clones of the gang. Also, Shadow included himself in that last sentence (”us”). Think about it: the only Shatterspace he was able to access was Ghost Hill’s, went in and explored it for himself. We already know about the time difference that happens between Shatterspaces so we don’t even know how long he stayed in there. Days? Months? Did he grieve for the world he vowed to protect? All we know was that he determined the situation with the Prism blueprint and how Ghost Hill operated, along with the small glimpses into whatever Shatterspace Sonic was. That it was, in his words, cruel. It teased him that everyone he knew about was there, his home was there. But it also was gone (a callback to what Sonic said). If he stayed any longer, he might’ve gone insane. Notice that his hand was shaking during that scene. I thought it was good character depth that he really does care and he isn’t some edgy counterpart of Sonic. What he said to Sonic really gave a double punch to the gut because Shadow, if Sonic informed him of what Eggman was up to, could’ve prevented the incident from happening in the first place and they wouldn’t have lost their (first) home.

"Knuckles...has his moments. He is really cool and all but he can still be such a hothead sometimes, especially when he argues or fights with Sonic. The poor guy was also pretty gullible but he's gotten better...I think (but it does make it a little funny to mess with him, especially when Rouge does it). But his toughness and strength really makes him stand out! And he does care about us in his own way, kind of feels like an older brother to me. what element writer are you?

water writer

just like water, you carry your readers in a new world, and they just can’t do anything but follow. your poetic writing allures the readers in with beautiful words, just for them to find themselves on the deepest oceans floors, where you make them taste pain in its sweetest form. water writers are the gentlest liars, they show the readers a small stream, and no one can see the waterfall at the end. if you were a tag, you would definitely be ‘Everything is Beautiful But Everything Hurts’. cliffhangers are one of your strong points that, mixed with your incredible versatility, make you a great writer. your stories have a deep meaning, and never miss to leave traces on your readers hearts. you don’t limit yourself, you like to explore the deepest parts in the human soul, and that’s why readers can sometimes find MCD in your stories. your endings tend to be sad or open, and your stories have the power to drag your readers with you, from the highest waves of a storm, and to the darkest secrets of the ocean.

Connections: Part Two

Continuation of "Hold On To “What If”: Overanalyzing and Rewriting Sonic Prime" essay

Sonic: "Nine, you came!" Nine: "When this is over, I'm going home and never looking back. Whether I go it alone is entirely up to you."

The hesitation from earlier ultimately changed Nine's final decision. He risked himself coming back, just for Sonic.

💬 Why?

Because Sonic saved him once before, gave him hope & motivation to start a new life. The risk was worth it, for their newfound friendship. As much as Nine tries to deny it, he's truly warming up to Sonic. Even if he is letting Sonic make his own choice, Nine was hoping he would at least consider it.

He, unfortunately, got captured by the Council, and while it was the last position he wanted to be in, he worked the inside. Not only to gather more information but to protect Sonic if they ever threaten to hurt him. Is he risking his life? Yes, but he's willing to do it for Sonic. He knows well enough that Sonic would come back for him but he also needs to stall the Council enough to not go after him.

Transcript:

Nine: "...we need [Sonic] alive."

Meanwhile, after the battle with the Council, Sonic tried to look for Nine, worried that he might've gone to the Grim by himself. Except he accidentally teleported to another world before he knew what happened to Nine.

Transcript:

Sonic: "I better find him before he portals out of here again."

[S1 EP7]

Speaking of other worlds, Nine isn't the only one Sonic confuses for the OG cast. When he first arrived in Boscage Maze and met Thorn, he believed that somewhere deep within Thorn, Amy was there. He technically already has with the New Yoke look-alike, Rusty, commenting how she suddenly became so "heartless". But then sees Thorn with much hostility.

Transcript:

Sonic: "Amy has to be in there."

Then, when he first visited No Place, he mistakes Dread for the OG Knuckles.

Transcript:

Sonic: "The Dread is... Knuckles?" [...] Sonic: "Definitely not the Knuckles I know." [...] Sonic: "You're officially my favorite Knuckles ever."

It’s not Knuckles, it’s Dread. Sure, he may have the same trait as Knuckles (guarding a gem they vow to protect), but Dread is the one who manipulates anyone who dares to get in his way and becomes a selfish coward, all for the Shard. Knuckles protects the Master Emerald because it is his responsibility, as the one last Echidna, the last one of his tribe. He doesn’t have a choice, but he isn’t against it either. (Don’t want to bring in the game material into this but...) in frontiers, he does feel a bit of loss of what happened to his people, and perhaps in the scenario where the Master Emerald has been taken, he would lose the only thing that was deeply connected to his tribe. The other artifacts on Angel Island would be there, but the Emerald is the one thing of value worth protecting.

I could go on and on, but the point is that Sonic is confusing the look-alikes for their OG counterparts. The one who knew the truth was Shadow. When Sonic suggested to Shadow that they could bring in Nine to help rebuild the Prism, Shadow denied it. Reasonably, Shadow couldn't be along with Sonic, entering the gateways like he does. All he did manage to get were glimpses. I'll talk about it more later on about his side of things but Shadow already understood that these look-alikes were practically strangers and shouldn't assume how they would act. Therefore, they shouldn't blindly trust them.

Transcript:

Shadow: "[Nine] can't be trusted." Sonic: "What are you talking about? Of course he can. He's just like Tails... He's just a little angsty, that's all." Shadow: "No. He's not Tails, he's Nine. And they're not your real friends." Sonic: "Dude, he's real. This is his reality."

When Shadow meant "not your real friends", he didn't exactly mean that they aren't real. From his POV, the only "look-alikes" he encountered himself were the ghosts of the OG casts, mere illusions really. He may not know how the look-alikes from the other worlds were, but what he does know that none of them were OG cast. Again, they can't trust them. Sonic took it the wrong way, defending NIne on his behalf. While it is caring, he should've took it as a warning.

Transcript:

Shadow: "I don't think [Nine] wants the same thing we do."

Just as it happened, Nine showed he was capable in handing on his own, he only needed to work from the inside. Sonic did his part in retrieving the Shards and rescuing Nine on the way. When they reunited, Nine apologized to Sonic for accidentally giving the idea to the Council to create Chaos Sonic, then Sonic forgiving him right away. The heartbreaking part about all this was that Nine, being vulnerable once again, was afraid to lose the bond they had. He really did care for him.

Sonic forgave him, he understood the Council used him. But he's also going off the basis that "Nine = clone of Tails", Nine would never do such a thing, the two foxes are both innocent after all. That's why Sonic defend Nine multiple times, whenever anyone dared to call Nine a threat or a traitor. He may see Nine, yes, but it's kind of hard not to compare to someone that appears almost identical to Tails.

Transcript:

Sonic: "Only a true friend could pull off a save like that." Nine: "Friend? We're friends? Sonic: "You bet we are!"

When he finally met this supposed "Tails", he could see how they are similar in appearance, but he ultimately says,

Transcript:

Nine: "This is the friend Sonic thought was like me? We're nothing alike."

[S2 EP7]

But they were, at least on one thing: they both got attached to Sonic.

[S2 EP8]

We all know what happens next: after the battle in Ghost Hill with the Council, both Nine and Sonic finally realized that they weren't on the same page.

Nine was betrayed. As a young fox, he tried to protect himself in a hostile environment, physically and emotionally, hiding himself from the world. He didn't attempt to make a personal connection with anyone because he believed that they would respond coldly. So he became independent. That was until Sonic arrived. He warmed up to him, allowing himself to be vulnerable around him. He cared, and was willing to risk it for the sake of their friendship. Because it was worth it. Then, to learn that Sonic never saw him as Nine, he realized that he let himself get hurt. How a fool he was. (Notice the metal tails.)

Sonic was also betrayed. The assumption he made since the end of EP1 was wrong. He didn't listen to what Shadow have warned of, he didn't understand that Nine was his own individual. He simply went with the basis of what he knew, to fix the mistake he made. Desperate to go back to his friends, his home. He was too blind to notice that Nine wasn't like Tails, to take the time to see the outcome of his own decisions. How he completely trusted Nine without hestitation. It's not to say he didn't care for Nine, he did, but he didn't notice. He assumed, which came to a cost. Once again, by his own fault, Nine got hurt and took the Shards for himself. He was this close to fixing everything and by his own fault, he lost it all again.

[I would like to state that these were my interpretations. If I misunderstood something, that's my bad. But I did want to put my thoughts here because I've hated how after S2 ended, some people kept saying that "Nine became a villain out of nowhere" or "Nine was just using Sonic for his own gain" or "Sonic didn't care and got what he deserved". The two made their own mistakes due to miscommunication and the lack of listening for both parties. Again, this is my opinion.]

FRISCO — At 9,097 feet above sea level, 15 artists used 16 letters to send a message and start a conversation about racism and diversity in Colorado’s mountain towns.

“BLACK LIVES MATTER,” painted by artists on the pavement on Main Street in Frisco in 20-foot letters between Madison and First avenues, presents an impossible-to-ignore challenge to end the silence around systemic racism in mountain communities.

“The outdoor industry is discussing racism and diversity problems. But the mountain communities are too scared to talk about it,” Shannon Galpin, a Frisco resident and international social justice activist perhaps best known for her work for women’s rights in Afghanistan, said in an interview. “Frisco is standing up to say: We want to lead. We want to have discussions. We’re willing to be held accountable. Who is with us?”

Several outdoor industry groups earlier this year came together with a unified statement to foster diversity, equity and inclusivity in the industry. The commitment by Camber Outdoors, the Outdoor Industry Association and Snowsports Industries America promised to build workplaces and cultures that help people of all races, genders and sexual identities thrive.

While lacking specifics, the united statement marked progress for an industry that has struggled to attract and retain people of color. Last month, the Outdoor Industry Association issued a statement admitting “a responsibility to do more.” SIA this week announced the launch of a four-part town hall series of conversations on inclusion. U.S. Ski and Snowboard on Wednesday drew hundreds of attendees to its online panel “Discussing Racial Diversity in Snowsports.”

But these types of conversations are only beginning in towns like Frisco, Galpin said.

Galpin organized the creation of the enormous mural, each letter filled in by an artist offering their interpretation of what it’s like to live in the Colorado mountains, with the support of the Frisco Town Board and mayor. It was a risky move for the leaders, she acknowledged in her artist statement, because sparking discussion around social justice also “disrupts the idyllic vibe” the town tries to create for visitors.

But it is a critical conversation, she wrote, because Frisco also is a community that includes Black, Hispanic, refugee, immigrant and Native American full-time residents. Galpin hopes the mural serves as a mission statement for change in the community.

“Not everyone who lives in our community goes home every night feeling safe in our community because of the color of their skin or the language they speak,” she wrote. “Not everyone in our community feels accepted … Not everyone in our community feels seen because of their skin color, their sexual preference, their immigration status, or their accent. Not everyone in this community has the same experience of ‘Welcome to Frisco’ as white people do. This is not new.”  

The murals within the mural, created by artists from across Colorado and New Mexico involved in both anti-racism work and the outdoors, reflect a diversity of experience while showing solidarity with the broader Black Lives Matter movement.

“It makes this about the individuality of the people who live and play in the mountains,” Galpin said. 

Frisco is the first known mountain community to host a BLM mural as many cities, including Denver and Washington, D.C., have done. The painted mural will remain in place on Main Street at least through one winter, depending on snow and weather conditions.

“We are using art to show solidarity and using art to promote conversations,” Galpin said.

I am currently planning the Advent wreath event for December and I would like to know which Christmas scenario you want with which character.

There are four days (every Sunday until Christmas) and for each day you can send me about 3 to 5 characters and the scenario you want for the different characters. I will write a one-shot for every character with their scenarios.

For Christmas, I will write some headcanons for spending Christmas Eve with the characters (about 5). If you have wished for these Christmas headcanons, character-wise or other ideas, feel free to send them.
