There have always been many Americas. Today we reflect on the state of our nation and the complexity of our story—or stories—and we hope for a more unified, peaceful and progressive future. Pictured here, quilts from 'Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories,' made by women across the land over the past 3 centuries. 1. Hoosier Suffrage quilt, before 1920, probably Indiana 2. Double Wedding Ring, about 1940, possibly Missouri 3. Creola Bennett Pettway (American, 1927–2015) or possibly Georgianna Bennett Pettway (American, died in 2012), Bricklayer or Courthouse Steps quilt, about 1955, Gee’s Bend, Alabama 4. @bisabutler (American, b. 1973), To God and Truth, 2019, New Jersey 5. Mrs. Herrick (American, b. 1798), Log Cabin quilt (Barn Raising variation), 1879, Westminster, Massachusetts 6. Album quilt, about 1850, Baltimore, Maryland 7. Carolina Lily quilt, 1830–45, United States 8. Blanket (frazada), mid-19th century, New Mexico Published by @mfapublications @mfaboston Read more about the book via linkinbio. #fabricofanation #quilt #americanquilts #america #suffrage #womenartists #geesbend #americana https://www.instagram.com/p/CnFWYsbJrxr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Learning about #bogolanfini, #nsibidi and #vai this morning. "They are part of an African textile tradition in which abstract, figurative, and geometric designs are used separately, and in combination, to endow the cloth with protective power and to signal information". I am loving how much cultural information is packed into our #BooksandBobbins July/August read, #HiddenInPlainView. There is so much to uppack, enjoy and appreciate. #bookclubofchampions #africanamericanquilts #freedomquilts #quilts #americanquilt #amplifymelanatedvoices #anthropologybooks #books #letsread #letssew (at Nigeria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDZXasWgGVW/?igshid=ttvbugfz12z4

😊 #lartpourlart #art #kunstgenuss #quiltlove #quilt #quiltlife #quilting #quiltinglove #americanquilt #traditional #nähen #sewing #patchwork (hier: Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0UkFPIn5_O/?igshid=1ufr8wj6thae9

A Quilt In Time "I knew nothing of the American tradition, but the 'use of non-patterned fabric for timeless quality' ignited my imagination, I guess it was an epiphanic moment: in my head, quilts would be the answer.” - Tessa Layzelle, Textile Artist. Tessa Layzelle started quilting around the arrival of her first child. Having a background in ‘Fine Art’ she took inspiration from women artists like Sonia Delaunay who made a beautiful abstract quilt for her baby - Barbara Hepworth who made her largest work after having triplets - and the legendary quilt makers of Alabama’s ‘Gee’s Bend’. Mixing traditional hand quilting techniques and painting, quilt making for Layzelle is an intriguing means for attempting to answer questions of abstraction, pattern and composition. The outcome is both artwork and object whilst its practice is inherently sustainable. As a primarily American craft tradition, quilting grew as the frontier stretched further west, and imported fabric became ever-more expensive so the need to use up every scrap going was paramount. Layzelle's impetus was sparked after a friend showed her the hand made quilts of ‘Folk Fibres’ in Texas. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #influences #soniadelauney #louiseborgoise #breonocasey #yorkshire #offcuts #salvagedfabrics #geesbend #folkfibres #americanquilting #abstract #textileartist #tessalayzelle (at Yorkshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT4Ixn2IhiD/?utm_medium=tumblr

In 2015, I went to rural Wisconsin for a retreat with my quilting group. We found each other through the sacred art of quilt-making and bonded in the craft room of the Nicoletti home.
The Nicoletti home's history lives on its walls. It's a comforting presence that created a haven from the world while we sewed our quilts, talked, and ate sloppy joes.
Full color photos + illustrations, 26 pages, 8.5"x7"

An in-depth feature on the meaning of quilts, including a serious consideration of 'Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories' @mfaboston is up now @artinamerica Kayleigh Perkov writes, "Previous exhibitions have primed us to accept that quilts hold history in their very threads. Yet quilts are multivalent things; they speak different words to different ears. Do quilts function as autobiography, a manifestation of the maker’s vision, or a fundamentally communal expression of purpose and meaning? Do they visualize broader aesthetic trends and evolving techniques? Are they embodiments of economic forces that bring commercially produced cloth into homes? Do they represent gendered training and its possible subversion? The answer to each of these questions is 'yes and . . .'; quilts illuminate multiple facets of life." Read the full review via linkinbio. The exhibition catalog, 'Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories' is published by @mfapublications #fabricofanation #quilt #americanquilts https://www.instagram.com/p/CVOY1aHpcDc/?utm_medium=tumblr

Perhaps the only time I will show the back of a quilt first! This is an important piece of Americana (via Great Britain). The back is various pieces of The Apotheosis of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Printed between 1785 and 1800 in Great Britain marking the end of the American Revolution. So many amazing images. George Washington being pulled by leopards is probably my favorite. This rare textile is the backing of a Lady in the Lake (?) quilt from the 1850 - a stunning piece in it own right. It measures 72" x 84". I've not had time to decide what to do with this. Damn! #Americana #revolutionarywartextile #18thcenturytextiles #georgewashington #benjaminfranklin #apotheosisofbejaminfranklinandgeorgewashington #americanquilt #18thcenturyquilt #folkart #raretextiles @iowacityart (at Iowa City Art & Antiques) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaTPaK_sI5z/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Repost @textilemuseumofcanada (@get_repost) ・・・ On May 31, the day following the opening of 'Color Improvisations 2', join us at 6 pm for a lecture by Robert Shaw! . 'Quilts As Art: A History' Contrary to popular belief, the earliest European and American quilts were not made from scraps but from expensive materials, and were special pieces intended for use by guests or as gifts that memorialized significant occasions. Based on his critically acclaimed book, 'American Quilts: The Democratic Art', independent scholar and curator Robert Shaw will present a history of such textiles and provide a context for the contemporary artist-made quilts in the exhibition. . Visit our website for tickets! (Link in bio) and don't forget that Nancy Crow herself will be in the building June 21 giving a lecture and June 22 for a special tour of the exhibition. Tickets for these events are available online as well! #textilemuseumofcanada #quilts #quilting #quiltlife #quiltlecture #americanquilt #lecture #artlecture
