🇬🇧I finished #bloodfromastone by #donnaleon the book was really interesting. Mostly because it showed a very different #venice , the Venice of the #vucumprà which was really cool. I also liked that it showed that even people we like can have #prejudice against people ( #commissariobrunetti daughter Chiara) but overcome those in the end. ~~~~~~~~~~~ 🇩🇪 Ich fand #blutigesteine total interessant, weil es diesmal ein ganz anderes #venedig zeigt, nämlich das der Einwanderer und der Straßenverkäufer. Though he lived & wrote in the American south, Edgar Allan Poe can't exactly be referred to as a Southern Gothic author because the subgenre didn't exist until American novelist Ellen Glasgow (1873 - 1945) created the term to critically describe "the inflamed rabble of impulses in the contemporary Southern novel” ('Heroes and Monsters', in 'The Saturday Review', May 4th 1953) in the mid C20th - but he still is. Early signs of the genre appear in Poe's work, such as 'The Fall of the House of Usher' (1839) & 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket' (1838). Perhaps, then, it would be better to refer to him as a precursor and credit his work as an influence upon the later occuring Southern Gothic of the mid-1900s. William Moss suggests that "on the ruins of the house of Usher, Poe lays the foundations of a Southern Gothic" - this, I think, is an accurate assertion. This relates to the concept of the American Dream, which androids fight to pursue throughout the novel. For example, Earth is considered androids’ equivalent of the “Land of Freedom and Opportunities” where they can escape from a life they want to forget, paralleling the immigrants who wish to establish a new lifestyle in the U.S.. Though instead of achieving their dream of a wonderful new life, androids end up alienated and criminalized by those who already inhabit Earth, for rather than allowing androids to start the new life that they have always desired, the humans already on Earth use the androids as scapegoats in order to maintain their position on the top of the social chain in society, directly reflecting the way that immigrants have been treated throughout American history, and thus illuminating the American aspect of pushing others down to make it to the top.
