In 1943, she became the first African-American to perform at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Donegan became known for her entertaining and flamboyant style of performance, and garnered a cult following. She began receiving wider acclaim later in life. In 1992, Donegan received a Jazz Master fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. The following year, she performed at the White House.

I'll always love you, and want you too. How much, you'll never know. Most of all, I miss you so, I'll always love you. I miss you so.
The first post on this blog will be for the king of 20th century pop music— Nat King Cole. Nat King Cole was the first and now longest-running jazz musician to hold a special place in my heart, since my great grandma was his biggest fan.
Nat King Cole exists in most memories as the singer to The Christmas Song (chestnuts roasting on an open fiiire), but less people know he's a pianist as well, even jazz musicians. When I show people his work with the Nat King Cole Trio, they ask me who the pianist is and I still get responses of surprise that they "didn't know he also played piano." I reply with "he was a pianist first and a singer second, too."
It's a shame, really. His gentle style of soloing moves me in ways that the most technically skilled pianists in the world couldn't achieve, just because of the emotion it can convey. His careful, floating comping makes a ballad so listenable, and he was so worthy of that recognition from the jazz community and from the general public.
At the same time, I understand why his voice *became* Nat King Cole. Listening to Nat King Cole makes you feel less alone, like you can so easily relate to what he's singing. His voice convinces me that what he's singing is true, even when he didn't personally experience whatever exactly he was singing about, and even if I haven't experienced what he's singing about. His voice feels like reassurance, like a nice cool pillow to rest your head on.

Hi! Can you do a pianist user with Kurapika, Killua Feitan and Chrollo please?
HXH W/ a Pianist!Reader
Characters: Killua Zoldyck, Kurapika Kurta, Chrollo Lucilfer, Feitan Portor Type: Headcanons, Gn!Reader
kurapika's is so short but i was literally drawing blanks v_v
Warnings: none
Killua Zoldyck
doesn't care that much tbh
he never really had time to learn an instrument or listen to music
and he's literally 12, I doubt he cares much for classical or jazz type genres
if you figure out how to make a piano sound like an american rap artist call him
very indifferent to your talent soz
he'd be more interested if you played guitar or drums or something
Kurapika Kurta
he's content listening to you play but he never really requests it from you
he thinks you sound best when you play from the heart
so if you happen to be playing while he is around he will stop and listen for a while
he is very impressed if you write your own music
Chrollo Lucilfer
he likes watching/listening to you play
will gladly attend all of your recitals and performances if you let him
if you play in public settings like the mall or on the street he will be like a personal security guard, chasing away any kids who come up and want to mess with you while you're working 😭
this guy probably listens to a good deal of classical music and will have song requests for you on occasion
he thinks there's something so elegant to you while you play
overall very supportive 10/10
Feitan Portor
I actually think he would know how to play piano
he grew up in the slums and didn't have much time to do anything hobby wise after that but he still gives me pianist idk
if you leave this man alone in your house he will look around first to make sure you're nowhere in sight and then play your piano
and when you catch him he jumps 50 feet in the air like a startled cat and denies it
you're going to have to beg him to ever play again or duet with you
he'll never admit it but he enjoys playing with you
sometimes when he is in the mood to play he will wordlessly drag you to the piano and sit then look at you expectantly

Random Facts: Xavier
Xavier's Music Collection
We've all seen the intro sequence for the game. As always, the obscure details intrigued me. So, today, I'm going to talk about this particular scene. Shout out to Rachelcookie321 on X for the image and their CD identifications!
Collection List:
In order from the right side of the screen to the left side, here's what I could identify. But from what I discovered, Xavier is a big fan of Leonard Bernstein!
"Passando Per Laterra • Purple Dawn • The Seven Stages • Variation 10"
?
"Bernstein Conducts Beethoven"
?
?
"Two Step (...)"
"Symphonic Dances & Rumble • West Side Story"
"Üegar Stjornurnar Falla • Katie Mahan"
Another "Passando Per Laterra"
"Waiting For Nobody • Alone - The Forest Sings • Allegretto Leggerenete"
"Four Anniversaries: 3 • For David Diamond (July 9, 1915)"
Another "Üegar Stjornurnar Falla"
Another "Bernstein Conducts Beethoven"
?
"Blue Danube Waltz"
Another "Waiting For Nobody • Alone - The Forest Sings • Allegretto Leggerenete"
"Champions of Folly • Roy Harris, Bold Lovell"
Another "Passando Per Laterra"
"Hovhaness A.: Lousadzak / Shatakh / Achtamar / Tziakerk"
Collection Details:
Passando Per Laterra • Purple Dawn • The Seven Stages • Variation 10
"Passando Per Laterra" translates to "Passing Through The Earth". The words beyond that were identified by Rachelcookie123, but I've been unable to find any matches for this one.
Bernstein Conducts Beethoven
Album by: Leonard Bernstein
This is an album of Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic in Beethoven symphonies, recorded between 1958 and 1964.
Symphonic Dances & Rumble • West Side Story
Composer: Leonard Bernstein
This musical is a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, telling the story of star-crossed lovers in 1950s New York. The score is a mixture of jazz, Latin rhythms, and Broadway style.
Üegar Stjornurnar Palla • Katie Mahan
Composer or Performer: Katie Mahan
Katie Mahan is an American pianist. In Icelandic, this translates to "When The Stars Fall", but I've been unable to find a work/performance of hers by this name.
Waiting For Nobody • Alone ~ The Forest Sings • Allegretto Leggerenete
Composer: ?
This one stumped me. Couldn't find anything at all about it.
Four Anniversaries: 3 • For David Diamond (July 9, 1915)
Composer: Leonard Bernstein
Four Anniversaries is a piano composition written by Leonard Bernstein in 1948. It consists of four movements, each dedicated to a specific person in his life. Xavier has a CD of the third movement, written for David Leo Diamond. David Diamond was also an established composer and this movement reflected his unique style.
Blue Danube Waltz
Composer: Johann Strauss II
This is a consistently popular piece in any classical musicians repetoire.
Fun fact: Among other uses in popular culture, this is the song used in Netflix's show "Squid Game" to announce the start of arepertoire.
Champions of Folly • Roy Harris
Album by: Roy Harris
Roy Harris was a popular American composer in the 1940s. "Champions of Folly" is a specific album of his music and "The Saucy Bold Robber" is a piece from that album.
Hovhaness A.: Lousadzak / Shatakh / Achtamar / Tziakerk
Composer: Alan Hovhaness
This is a recording of pieces by Alan Hovhaness that includes: Lousadzak, Shatakh, Achtamar, and Tsiakerk. Alan Hovhaness was an American composer who was one of the most prolific of the 20th century. While his official catalog includes 67 symphonies and 493 opus numbers, a true tally of his total works comes in at more than 500 surviving works.
Bonus CD:
The subsequent part of the intro scene shows Xavier selecting one CD and putting it into a CD player. On the CD are the words "Deep Space Legend: Beyond the Universe".

Today In History
Hazel Dorothy Scott, famed pianist and singer, was born in Trinidad on this date June 11, 1920.
She was active as a jazz singer throughout the 1930s and 1940s. In 1950, she became the first black American to host her own TV show, The Hazel Scott Show.
Scott is famous for her use of “swing” in classical music. She was an outspoken critic of racial discrimination and segregation. Scott used her influence to improve the representation of Black Americans in film.
Hazel Scott was not only the first Black American woman to host her own television show, but she also bravely stood up to the House Un-American Activities Committee and the Hollywood studio machine. The gifted and popular performer dazzled audiences in the U.S. and abroad with her jazzy renditions of classical works.
