I'll always love you, and want you too. How much, you'll never know. Most of all, I miss you so, I'll always love you. I miss you so.
The first post on this blog will be for the king of 20th century pop music— Nat King Cole. Nat King Cole was the first and now longest-running jazz musician to hold a special place in my heart, since my great grandma was his biggest fan.
Nat King Cole exists in most memories as the singer to The Christmas Song (chestnuts roasting on an open fiiire), but less people know he's a pianist as well, even jazz musicians. When I show people his work with the Nat King Cole Trio, they ask me who the pianist is and I still get responses of surprise that they "didn't know he also played piano." I reply with "he was a pianist first and a singer second, too."
It's a shame, really. His gentle style of soloing moves me in ways that the most technically skilled pianists in the world couldn't achieve, just because of the emotion it can convey. His careful, floating comping makes a ballad so listenable, and he was so worthy of that recognition from the jazz community and from the general public.
At the same time, I understand why his voice *became* Nat King Cole. Listening to Nat King Cole makes you feel less alone, like you can so easily relate to what he's singing. His voice convinces me that what he's singing is true, even when he didn't personally experience whatever exactly he was singing about, and even if I haven't experienced what he's singing about. His voice feels like reassurance, like a nice cool pillow to rest your head on.

Characters: Killua Zoldyck, Kurapika Kurta, Chrollo Lucilfer, Feitan Portor Type: Headcanons, Gn!Reader
kurapika's is so short but i was literally drawing blanks v_v
Warnings: none
Tumblr media
Killua Zoldyck
doesn't care that much tbh
he never really had time to learn an instrument or listen to music
and he's literally 12, I doubt he cares much for classical or jazz type genres
if you figure out how to make a piano sound like an american rap artist call him
very indifferent to your talent soz
he'd be more interested if you played guitar or drums or something
Kurapika Kurta
he's content listening to you play but he never really requests it from you
he thinks you sound best when you play from the heart
so if you happen to be playing while he is around he will stop and listen for a while
he is very impressed if you write your own music
Chrollo Lucilfer
he likes watching/listening to you play
will gladly attend all of your recitals and performances if you let him
if you play in public settings like the mall or on the street he will be like a personal security guard, chasing away any kids who come up and want to mess with you while you're working 😭
this guy probably listens to a good deal of classical music and will have song requests for you on occasion
he thinks there's something so elegant to you while you play
overall very supportive 10/10
Feitan Portor
I actually think he would know how to play piano
he grew up in the slums and didn't have much time to do anything hobby wise after that but he still gives me pianist idk
if you leave this man alone in your house he will look around first to make sure you're nowhere in sight and then play your piano
and when you catch him he jumps 50 feet in the air like a startled cat and denies it
you're going to have to beg him to ever play again or duet with you
he'll never admit it but he enjoys playing with you
sometimes when he is in the mood to play he will wordlessly drag you to the piano and sit then look at you expectantly

“The one thing I don't think I could live without would be the soundtracks to horror films,'' she said. ''I love to play them in my car as I drive down the freeway.'' Miss Galas sees no contradiction in that she is as fond of grade-B horror movies and of the heavy-metal rock of AC/DC as she is of Verdi and her vocal idol, Maria Callas.”
/ From a 1985 New York Times profile of Diamanda Galas /
Don’t let the resemblance to Morticia Addams fool you - Diamanda Galas has SOUL! The fierce Greek American avant-garde diva, pianist, performance artist and AIDS activist (who was born on 29 August 1955, turning 69 today) convincingly styles herself as an Angel of Death. Once memorably described by The New Yorker as “lounge singer in a world on fire”, she wields her remarkable bird-of-prey voice like a weapon and possesses the same kind of wraith-cheekboned, raven-haired beauty Walt Disney endowed his animated evil queen stepmothers with. Galas got her first break singing in front of insane asylum inmates, has paid tribute to Aileen Wuornos and in performance is apt to take the stage stripped to the waist and smeared in blood. Appropriately, director Francis Ford Coppola enlisted her to provide eerie shrieks and gasps for the sound effects in his 1992 version of Dracula. I haven’t seen Galas perform in years, but I vividly remember the last time: she was reinterpreting jazz standards like “All of Me” and “You Don’t Know What Love Is” in her own inimitable (blood-curdling) way, which lulled the uninitiated into a false sense of security. People were filing out in dismay all night! Keep doing what you’re doing, lady! (If you’ve never dipped a toe into Galas’ oeuvre, start with her spine-tingling interpretations of “I Put a Spell on You”, The Supremes' “My World is Empty Without You” or Johnny Cash’s “25 Minutes to Go").
