Doll 1: Henri Arthur
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my first doll, he was an early edition Felicity (with the soft ginger lashes) but Iā€™d gotten the doll second hand and the original owner had cut the hair when she was a child.
This doll was gifted to me when I was either 13 or 14 and this old friend went everywhere with me. Now, Iā€™ve cut the hair further to a more masculine hairstyle and decided he was a boy.
He looks like me at a glance but mostly cause all redheads are deemed to look alike and Iā€™m obviously related to every redhead on earth, so yeah I look just like him /s
But in all seriousness, being my first doll and looking similar to me, he is a mini me. But he isnā€™t to be the only one hopefully. He is a reflection of the vintage enthusiast part of me. I collect and restore vintage clothes at times and he wears mini versions of the vintage clothes I own.
Heā€™s the first doll I ever operated on. I had to restring his legs only like 80 times. I had to mend a hole on his torso side opposite of the tag side. I also had to sew one of his leg sockets back in place as it had started to detach from the fabric of the torso.
Heā€™s also the first doll I ever gave a tiny plastic heart. I started this when I first got him, after the first repair. So heā€™s got a red plastic heart shoved down into the cotton inside his torso thatā€™s been there since I was a child when I first put it there.
This tradition continues and now every doll who passes into my ownership gets a little plastic heart. I thought it to be a cute little idea.

ā˜… i never mentioned this since about a month ago, but let me welcome back caroline, fresh-faced and refurbished from the doll hospital ! the head is definitely not an equivalent to its' original mold and wig, but nevertheless, this is much preferred to the initial condition she'd been in upon purchase. šŸ„°

Indigenous Canadian dolls šŸ§”
Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, also known as orange shirt day, we wear an orange shirt, typically with the slogan ā€œEvery Child Mattersā€, in remembrance and acknowledgement of what happened to Indigenous children in residential schools.
As a doll blog I feel like it is only fitting for me to highlight some amazing Indigenous Canadian artists and dolls on here!
Saila Qilavvaq from Maplelea Girls
Tumblr media
Saila Qilavvaq is a Maplelea Girl doll who is from Iqaluit, Nunavut. She wants to be a fashion designer who brings an Inuit flair to her looks. Each Maplelea doll comes with a journal and Saliaā€™s is the first to be written in English, French, and Inuktitut!
Tumblr media
Along with the dolls, Maplelea Girls also makes fashion packs you can buy. Here we have the orange ā€œEvery Child Mattersā€ shirt, Saila wearing a traditional Amauti coat, and Canyonā€™s Dress which was designed by Teresa Snow (the outfit is based on an outfit she made for her own daughter, Canyon)

Ribbon Skirt dolls by Tracy Boucher
Tumblr media
These custom Ribbon Skirt dolls are meant to show women, girls, and two-spirit individuals their worth and bring attention to the MMIWG movement. Ribbon skirts are meant to be floor length and touch the ground to have connection to the Earth. Boucher further discusses the dolls and the meaning of the ribbon skirt in this interview.
No-Face dolls by Audrey ā€œBillā€ Wilson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wilson is a Chippewas woman who based these dolls off an indigenous story of a girl who is too vain and so the Great Spirits take away her face. The story is meant to be a lesson to children about humility. More of this story can be found in this interview. ļæ¼
Whetung Ojibwa dolls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the 1960s the Whetung family began crafting more to sell at their store (now the Whetung Ojibwa Centre, a museum with indigenous art to purchase). The doll in the blue dress is named Waboose Whetung and if you find her hidden around the Whetung Ojibwa Centre you can get $5 off your purchase. More information about the Whetung history can be found here.

I added lip paint and a hint of blush to my 1991 PC Samantha. Now she kinda looks yassified but I think it works for her!
While I normally think Pleasant Company items are better quality, itā€™s a bit of a pet peeve of mine that the dolls seem to lack color compared to Mattel dolls. Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s because the paint has faded overtime, but I used my acrylic paints and an acrylic sealer. It ended up a bit bolder than expected like makeup but Sam looks pretty!

honestly sometimes i start thinking about all the tumblr bloggers who like saved my life a little bit when i was on here as a teenager and it makes me so emotional in a good way :) tumblr was the place i first got introduced to harm reduction, disability justice, prison abolition, so many other things. i remember reading a comic about prison abolition on here when i was 11 and i was like oh shit this all is making so much sense for the first time in my life. genuinely changed the path of my life. it just gave me so much more room to understand like, my family members in prison and the bullshit cops did in my neighborhood and how those weren't just individual events, but connected to these larger patterns of power. i remember being 13 following SO Many disability justice bloggers who were like, linking to mia mingus access intimacy and talking about crip time and interdependence and at the time i didn't even think i was disabled i was just like "wow this is all so interesting and cool to me" and then once i started getting more and more disabled like. my foundation of disability was one based in community and care and protest and not just the medical model or disability-as-tragedy. i remember following so many harm reduction bloggers on here and learning about decrim and like. that was a fucking lifeline when i was too young to actually access harm reduction resources irl and i am ALWAYS going to be so fucking grateful for all the people who were just sharing about their lives and their thoughts because it really did so much for me

I found a 1920ā€™s lunchbox on eBay (which I ended up buying) that is quite clearly the inspiration for Kitā€™s lunchbox. So I included some comparison pictures of my lunchbox and Kitā€™s lunchbox.
Even the framing around the images is pretty much almost perfectly the very same. The images differ but do stick to the theme fairly consistently.
Boats, trains, planes. The lid is where the theme differs quite a lot. Kitā€™s has got airplanes on the lid while mine has god scenes of people picnicking and enjoying the outdoors (Oof what was that like?? šŸ‘€)
But I do see why this decision was made. Due to the size of Kitā€™s lunchbox, it cannot fit the imaging and still be clearly visible at the same time. So instead of having the train and plane in the same image on the front like mine has, hers has the planes on the lid and the train on the front.
Also, yes my lunchbox is absolutely made with so much lead. I do use the lunchbox since my naked food never would sit in it. My food will always be in some form of containment (even apples, oranges, bananas, etc) so there is no need to worry about that I think. (Besides Iā€™m already consuming many contaminated things not to mention all the micro plastics, my body is already pollutedā€¦ for clarification I live on the border of Ohio so all of the water is absolutely contaminated)
But yeah, I thought this would be a fun share. I absolutely love having things to match my dolls (Iā€™m a weirdo) so Iā€™m very pleased to have a lunchbox matching Kitā€™s.
If I had the spoons to do a description of the pictures I would, but I havenā€™t had energy in so long. I do apologise for that.

With so many dolls I finally broke down and bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA to display them on. It isnā€™t a perfect solution as they donā€™t all fit vertically, but my living room is much less cluttered now.
Everyone is dressed for school or autumn. I especially love the Samantha-Ruthie shelf.

My beloved Jackie!
She is my Creole baby from Louisiana. All my dolls get a small piece of me in their lore and Jackie gets the tiny piece I left somewhere in the Bayou when I moved out. She speaks French and ASL (and some English after she went to college)
Jackie is a customized 26 with a light faceup (freckles and blush) and a discontinued zazoudolls wig. the necklaces are all from @/allldolledup on Instagram (middle 2 were custom made for Jackie!). the belt is a necklace from the 80s. all the clothes are handmade but I got them secondhand so I do not know the artist. :( shoes are the original Kit meet shoes.
