hi! bit of a random question, but how do you view hecatia's and junko's relationship? I've seen a lot of different takes over the years (some completely domestic, basically-married ones, versions where the border between their friendship and something else is more blurry, etc) and I'm always curious about other people's preferences for them specifically since it's a pretty popular ship

Thank you for the ask! I don’t really get to talk about shipping on this blog too often even though I do enjoy it so I'm grateful for the opportunity. My preferred take of junheca is honestly just to take Hecatia’s LoLK bio at face value and expand upon that. In other words, the core of this relationship - and what makes it fun to me - is that Hecatia thinks Junko’s grudge is the coolest thing in the world and thus goes along with her schemes. The bio essentially makes it sound like work as a tag team: Junko has the ideas and Hecatia has the means. It’s simple, but it’s a setup which has a lot of potential. I see it as an abstract fascination which gradually turns into love on Hecatia’s end. I actually don’t have quite as clear of an image of the relationship’s development on Junko’s side. Perhaps it could be interesting if she didn’t quite realize what sort of feelings she is developing but simultaneously kept pushing her scheme further and further into a direction which requires more direct involvement from Hecatia. In any case, Hecatia’s bio highlights it didn’t take them much time to realize they work well together so I like to think it was love at first sight in some capacity even though it was combined with other feelings. Many of my other preferences regarding junheca basically just extend what can be gathered from Hecatia’s bio to other spheres of activity. I generally think Hecatia is more affectionate, for instance.

I don’t mind domestic portrayals, but I do admit that for me the appeal comes in part from the way they are both involved in the plot of LoLK so that’s not my absolute favorite. Granted, coming up with scenarios where they are working on some sort of plan together is much more troublesome, so it’s not surprising that’s not exactly a common fanwork premise.

As far as I can tell, highlighting Hecatia’s fascination with Junko’s endeavors is pretty rare in fanworks. It’s not uncommon for people to portray her as concerned over Junko’s grudge or outright trying to dissuade her from it - I will admit I’m not a huge fan of that and do not fully grasp where it came from. Not from the game, that’s for sure; and what few reappearances Junko and Hecatia got since do not really point into that direction either.

Chimata if you feel like it!

General opinion/How much I care about them: i dont remember if it was really soon after or if it took some time for it all to click, but i've really come to adore all of th18's cast, and that includes that Chimata who has one of the best designs ever and I am being completely sincere! 🌈 i love everything about her. Her concept as a god of markets and how that was clearly inspired by real life doujin conventions yet still making it make sense in the setting of touhou, and her personal journey of rising back up to power thanks to the really complicated connection she's struck up with Megumu is so compelling and instantly had me and so many other fans running hamster wheels in our brains for years to come...

Also the majority of her dialogue is just really really funny, between bragging about how amazing markets are (She's right) or getting so offended when the player characters insult her card... She's kind of a mess even moreso than the usual touhou character, and that she's also a final boss and super powerful god makes a fun contrast i like a lot.

A ship I love: the obvious one is chimata/megumu though its a bit weird to talk about in this context because personally what i love about the marketeer quartet polycule is how Megumu is at the center and how the other three reflect and bring out different aspects of her (Although at the same time i also think Tsukasa can easily be the 'center' pov if needed to, because they all think the scheming tube fox is cute!). Going into detail on all that would probably steer the topic away from Chimata too much so i'll just say for now that I think Chimata and Megumu, without either really meaning to, brought the 'best' out of each other. Its just that their 'best' in this case meant giving them the means and confidence to take everything for themselves 😄

(also kind of a tangent but ive also always kinda thought megumu/chimata is similar in superficial ways to how i see yachie/keiki from just the previous game maybe with the dynamics reversed a little. But then following on that thought, momoyo is kinda similar to saki, and then i have no choice but to say tsukasa like some inverse mayumi... Its just nonsense but its funny to me think about)

A non-romantic relationship that I love: as of right now, she's gotta be reeeeeally ticked at Marisa right? Chimata had gotten over that whole thing of attacking her market as a robber and turning her bedridden, but then the stuff with the black markets had Marisa being trusted to stop them and then putting it off to enjoy collecting cards instead 😂

But despite all of that, I think Chimata ultimately would still acknowledge that avariciously human spirit which is vital in those who seek to do exchange, and will probably take Marisa off her personal market banlist eventually....

The NOTP: I actually think Chimata would get along surprisingly well with Momoyo but ive no desire to make something romantic out of it. although... maybe if megumu was somehow their driving motivation???

My biggest headcanon about them: i actually dont have anything too substantial this moment if only because her actual canon has been already so substantial and fulfilling... Though i think after becoming bedridden after UM's ending, she was resting at Megumu's place and was helping herself to the fridge and stuff without any hesitation or remorse 😊

An idea for a fanfiction I would like to write/read about them: well i'll just say for now that i definitely want to do a specific story featuring the market quartet sometime.

anyhow, something about her makes me feel like shes a prime candidate for those AUs where she swaps roles with another character (like megumu or kanako) yet somehow retains mostly the exact same personality and mannerisms.

Something that makes me think of them: i will always think of chimata now whenever i purchase goods and services, and remember to thank her for keeping me alive 😊

I swear to god, Zanmu has just been on my mind recently, she's taking over my fucking brain please send help

Why is it that everytime I do a drawing of Zanmu I always make the canvas size fucking huge and it ends up being a living nightmare to fucking export. I swear to god I had to go from 1200 DPI to 600 to 350.

Exporting hell aside, I loved working on this piece. With Zanmu's design, I wanted to combine all the design details that I love and have seen in other people's drawings of Zanmu and give them my own personal touches. First of all, her sleeves were inspired by @amemenojaku's design for Zanmu, and I absolutley love that detail because not only does it make her feel more regal, it also can be a callback to Satori and old hell, and also gives me the idea that Satori's fashion sense was inspired by Zanmu because IRL a lot of historical fashion was inspired by what the nobles were wearing at the time, and since Satori was around since when Old Hell used to be Hell, she probably took some wardrobe inspo from her (or it could be my headcanon that Satori could've been Zanmu's royal advisor or she was in her court or something but that theory is kinda grasping at strings from other headcanons I have, but that's for a different post). Also, the eye makeup she has was inspired by @jothelion's drawings of Zanmu, and like, I fucking love that detail because it just adds so much like omg I just love it sm.

And now for the design details I put in. I gave Zanmu tassel earrings because I think they'd look great on her. I also really like to exaggerate her hair and really try to make it look wild, as well as having little grey hairs here and there. I also try to add some wrinkles to the corners of her eyes, but TBH I don't know how visible that detail is, since the image is pretty fucking big. I also really exaggerated the tassles/strings on her outfit, since I really wanted to play around with the potential flow they could have. Also, big fan of giving Zanmu longer sleeves and pants. IDK why but I just like how it flows better. Also big fan of making her taller, idk why a lot of fanart makes her short. Also, I placed her horns closer to the front of her head as I just think placing horns in that position looks cool.

Also, if you're wondering about the halo, I took some inspiration from a few of Caravaggio's paintings where he often depicts saints with this very thin halo around the top of their heads. I just liked that detail a lot so I thought I'd include it.

Fun fact, I was originally gonna make the four skeletons Chiyari, Biten, Enoko, and Hisami but I didn't like the prospect of having to draw four more characters, so I chose to replace them with skeletons (if you wanna get silly with it, Zanmu got Hisami to kidnap Aya, set up some skeletons with bones from her bone collection and told her to take a picture of her).

I kinda gave up on Zanmu's feet and the one skeleton's hands (as if drawing hands normally is hard enough but NOPE, HAD TO MAKE IT LIVING HELL FOR MYSELF BY MAKING IT A SKELETON) and the quality of the image may suffer because of how much I had to fucking compress it (Zanmu's presence alone was enough to make the computer lose all of it's desire and motivation to export the drawing of her lmao), but I have been hacking at this piece for a while now, plus I need to learn when to call it quits when it comes to drawings). Also as I was fixing up the hands there was one spot where I forgot to clean up with the sketch and I can't fucking unsee that now and it's going to fucking bother me until I fix it but fixing it requires going back and putting my computer through hell so yeah.

So yeah, that's about all I have to say with this drawing, it was fun but also a nightmare lol

Youkai!!! I remember when I was a wee child and I got into touhou and subsequently into Youkai thanks to Shigeru Mizuki’s encyclopedia…

As a Monster enthusiast, Youkai are honestly the most fascinating types of monsters in all kind of folklores to me, and I think it’s because of the absolute immense number of creatures in the repertoire. There’s SO MANY OF THEM, and a lot of them are… frankly “useless”, but to a point where they’re very charming! I especially love that very specific one, i can’t remember its name, but its only purpose is to tug peoples’ sleeves at night and disappear. He’s a very cute one.

My honest opinion on Youkai is that they’re always so fun to read about and to look at. There’s so many varieties and different takes, be it in folktales, theatre (thinking about the play Nue by Zeami Motokiyo and its modern iteration by Sakate Youji), artworks, pop culture, video games, animes and mangas… And as my OCverse is based on Youkais, it’s always a fun trip to come up with a unique take that i would like to see, both in terms of story and character design!

And take my word for it: the best kind of Youkai stories are the ones where Youkais live among humans… living a daily, mundane life…! And for that i really recommend Kanojo wa Rokurokubi by Zui Nieki. It’s my favourite and a big inspiration of mine when i write slice-of-life stuff with a supernatural spice.

(Also my favourite Youkai, aside from OBVIOUSLY Tanuki and Tsukumogami, is Gashadokuro)

Sexuality Headcanon: Ace with left gay

Gender Headcanon: Exactly how Sagume’s situation-reversal interacts with self-identification is something I’ve wondered about for a while; she’s able to say “my name is Sagume” (Reimu’s route) and “I am Sagume” (Sanae’s route), so it’s probable that her identity writ large, gender included, is something that’s not considered “a situation” or “the world” by her powers. I’d like to see her actually conversing with someone in a print work again to get more of a handle on the specifics, but file her under Complicated for the moment.

A ship I have with said character: I will die on the Eisagu hill.

A BROTP I have with said character: She’s very interesting to bounce off the Watatsukis; either Yorihime, who’s about as straightforward as she isn’t, or Toyohime, as a fellow “Lunarian who knows it’s not all it claims to be”.

A NOTP I have with said character: I’m generally disinclined to pair the Lunarians and moon rabbits; nothing too Sagume-specific though.

A random headcanon: She’s necessarily experienced with nonverbal communication, including using her wing in addition to her arms for complex gestures.

General Opinion over said character: A very interesting character even when I’m not cruising for a thought experiment. She continues the trend of us only ever putting names and faces to “atypical” Lunarians started by the Watatsukis, which is neat. She’s probably one of my favourite newcomers just from the amount of Implications she has going on, even if she’s not shown up in a speaking role since LoLK. (Fingers crossed for whatever comes after Shinigami, I guess?)

A ship I have with said character: I love Kutasaki... I haven’t thought about it in a while but I still think the idea of Saki flirting with an exasperated Kutaka is cute! I’ve seen her paired with Eiki recently as well and think it’s kinda neat. I also still think she’s a cute pair with Urumi, I like to think kutaka is so sweet and cute and Urumi develops a crush on her and then shes like that one picture of the cow looking over the ocean with the caption “I think i’m gay”

A BROTP I have with said character: I like to think her and Komachi get along pretty well as coworkers! Also since she lives on Youkai Mountain I like the idea of her being friends with other mountain residents, I could particularly see her getting along with the Akis pretty well!

A NOTP I have with said character: Don’t really have one so far! I’m pretty open to all ships I’ve seen with her.

A random headcanon: She tries to make a lot of lists to stay organized because she’s so forgetful, but she ends up being so forgetful that she misplaces her lists a lot. It’s something she’s still working on

General Opinion over said character: I love her a lot! She was my favorite character from WBaWC and I honestly think she still is! She was also super fun to cosplay so she holds a special place in my heart. I actually started crying when I found out she came back in the extra stage in the full version of the game lmao... I love this chicken

I got tagged by @amemenojaku to post the "latest line that you've drawn" and have also decided to cheat :D

So I wanted to do a digital version of a sketch that I liked which is a concept of Eirin but abstract because really my latest line would be the very bad sketches of me trying to do a version of Keiki with this same premise but I'm still workshopping that, so here's an Eirin.

So yeah, recently I had the idea of "what if gods in Touhou looked like abstract versions of what they're gods of" and this idea instantly popped into my head for Eirin. As you can tell, I was again very influenced by ENA in the way that I abstracted her face (also, someone pointed out that she looks like the collector from Owl House now and that has probably subconciously influenced me because his design is so good (haven't watched that far into it because I procrastinate lol)). Frankly, ENA has become a main inspiration for when I do abstract designs (like I did with Doremy), and the idea of the face being split in half like this is such an interesting design choice I love it. Also, that sketch I made was drawn from memory so her bangs are basically non-existent lmao. Once again, I used some collage elements by having the space side of her face be an actual photo of... space, and overlaying a picture of the moon on the moon side of the face for texture.

It was her and Keiki that I immediately got this design idea for, I know what I want to do for Keiki's design but I have no idea how to draw it lol. Only hint I'm giving is that I have the Breath of The Wild artbook as well as screenshots from Tears of the Kingdom because-I'm-too-scared-to-google-it-because-I-haven't-finished-the-game-yet-and-I-don't-want-any-spoilers- and I'M NOT AFRAID TO USE THEM-

If you’re up for it, I’d love to see some character interaction – platonic or romantic! My favourite pairs right now are Seija/Shinmyoumaru, Akyuu/Kosuzu, Yachie/Saki, and the two girls from DiPP (Jacketko & Labelko). If you’d rather work on a single character… Shinmyoumaru is the light of my life ;_; She could be wearing a big scarf or comfy gloves for winter…!

I’ll love pretty much anything that isn’t mean-spirited; but if you need some inspiration: characters sharing a scarf or an umbrella, characters enjoying their hobbies, going on adventures, flowers, history/mythology… I like fluff just as much as serious/darker works, so hopefully you’ll find something fun to work on.
