30 OTP Questions: Alan and Amelia.
1: Who spends almost all their money on the other?
Hmm. This one is a bit tough. I’d say Alan spends a bit on Amelia to keep her in his clutches.
2: Who sleeps in the other’s lap?
Amelia often sleeps in Alan’s lap. She’s a tired girl. She works very hard.
3: Who walks around the house half-naked and who yells at them to put on some clothes?
They both are quite the exhibitionsts when they know they will be alone.
4: Which one tells the other not to stay up all night and which one stays up all night anyway?
Amelia is always getting onto Alan about this. He doesn’t really care. Politics and Money never sleep.
5: Which one tries to make food for the other but burns it all by accident and which one tells them that it’s okay and makes them both cookies?
Neither of them cook much because they’re both rich Tories that can afford to have someone do that for them.
6: Which one reads OTP prompts and says “Oh that’s us!” and which one goes “Eh, not really”?
In the context of the 80’s, Alan would be the one to point this out in a movie theatre and Amelia would be the one to disagree.
7: Which one constantly wears the other’s clothes?
Amelia loves wearing Alan’s dress shirts!!
8: Which one spends all day running errands and which one says “You remembered [thing], right?”
Most of Amelia’s job is this right here. So I’d say her.
9: Which one drives the car and which one gives them directions?
Alan always drives. Unless he’s drunk then Amelia will drive him home. She’s one of the few people he trusts with his cars.
10: Which one does the posing while the other one draws?
Neither of them can draw. But I’d say either of them have photos of the other somewhere on their person at all times.
11: If they were about to rob a museum, which one does backflips through lasers and which one is strolling behind with a bag of chips?
Amelia is doing the flips and Alan is strolling casually.
12: Which one of your OTP overdoes it on the alcohol and which one makes the other stop drinking?
Amelia usually is the one to take care of drunk Alan but that rarely happens. Both of them are heavyweights when it comes to drinking.
13: Which one likes to surprise the other with a lot of small random gifts?
Amelia loves to leave little notes for her boss/lover.
14: Which one keeps accidentally using the other’s last name instead of their own?
Neither. Both of them are super careful about that.
15: Which one screams about the spider and which one brings the spider outside?
Alan is a screaming about it. Amelia takes it outside.
16: Which one gives the other their jacket?
Alan loves doing this for Amelia.
17: Who keeps getting threatened by the other’s overprotective older sibling?
Neither. Both of these two do not like/talk to their family.
18: Who’s the first one to admit they have feelings for the other?
Alan of course made the first move.
19: How good would your OTP be at parenting?
No. None of them. Keep all children away from them.
20: Which one types with perfect grammar and which one types using numbers as letters?
Both have perfect grammar and punctuation.
21: Who gets attacked by a bully and who protects them?
Amelia I’d say would be vulnerable to this but if she can’t handle it, Alan will step in and bribe them to go away.
22: Who makes the bad puns and who makes a pained smile every time the other makes a pun?
They regularly beat up people who do this.
23: Who comes home from work to see that the other one bought a puppy?
They both hate animals lol.
24: Which one gives the other a piggyback ride when they’re tired?
Amelia is so tiny, Alan can easily carry her anywhere.
25: Which one competes in some sort of activity and which one does the overzealous cheering?
Amelia is always in the public gallery supporting Alan. Not vocally of course. Spiritually.
26: Who takes a selfie when the other one falls asleep on their shoulder?
Neither of them have time for such nonsense!!!!
27: Which one would give the other a makeover if they asked?
Both of them are already very stylish, I’d doubt they’d want one.
28: Which one owns a pet that the other is absolutely terrified of?
Again, they both hate animals lol
29: Which one holds the umbrella over both of them when it rains?
Alan would totally do this for Amelia.
30: If your OTP went on vacation, where would they go and what would they do? Who would take the pictures?
They both enjoy warm, exotic places. Probably Bora Bora or The West Indies. They would probably mostly have sex and drink Brandy. Watch news and insult the anchors together. Lounge in the sun, in the same chair like two house cats and eat really fancy food.
No pictures!! Their can’t be any evidence!!

💙Gazelle (Grace) Shropshire Dodman💙
Big Hammer/ Fire/ June 1 1893/ Real age: 131/ Age she plays by: 20/ Gemini/ 5’0/ Pansexual/ Class: 0-4-2 WT Gazelle Steam/ Nationality: British/ Home town: London, England/ Voice Claim: Kristen Schaal (Just make her British 😂)
💙Headcanons and Facts💙
Gazelle was originally built as a 2-2-2WT in 1893 by Alfred Dodman & Co at King’s Lynn to a design produced by S Stone of the Great Eastern Railway. The original owner was William Burkitt who had private running rights over the Midland & Great Northern and Great Eastern Railways and he used Gazelle on his business trips as a seed and corn dealer.
She loves corn and every Christmas, she gives corn to the hungry.
When four years old, on 25 July 1897 it travelled from King’s Lynn to Chesterfield (105 miles) from Lincoln via the newly opened Lancashire Derbyshire & East Coast Railway, in 5hr 10min, and after a 3hr 40min layover at Chesterfield it returned to King’s Lynn, making an additional stop at Spalding, and taking 5hr 25min. The trip conveyed Gazelle’s then owner, William Burkitt, an amateur locomotive enthusiast (who was twice Mayor of Lynn) to Chesterfield where he had business interests.
She loves to travel although she’s very tired after a long journey.
During the Second World War the Shropshire & Montgomery Railway was taken over by the War Department because of the number of armaments factories which it served. In 1950 the entire stock of the Shropshire & Montgomery Railway (consisting of 1 Gazelle and three ex- London North Western Railway Coal Tanks) was taken over by the Western Region of British Railways and all the locomotives were promptly withdrawn without being renumbered.
She goes to the scrapyard where her fellow “Gazelle”s were scrapped and pays her respects every New Year.
Has a huge sweet tooth and loves chocolate.
Is a ballet dancer.
Favorite Season: All of them.
Instrument: Voice.

❤️Charlie Sharp McConnell❤️
Spear/ Light/ Dec 11 1859/ Real Age: 165/ Age she plays by: 21/ Sagittarius/ 5’10/ Pansexual/ Class: LNWR Bloomer Steam/ Nationality: British/ Home town: Birmingham, England/ Voice Claim: Emma Watson
❤️Headcanons and Facts❤️
The name "Bloomer" was at first a nickname, but was quickly adopted officially. The nickname was a topical one in the autumn of 1851 when the first engine arrived on the line, because of the current popular excitement aroused by the appearance of women wearing trousers, as advocated by Mrs Amelia Bloomer. The widespread belief that they were awarded this nickname because they showed more of their wheels than earlier engines makes no sense: most earlier engines on the line had naked wheels.
She is a legend among the steamies, being famous for being alive for so long.
Is very sweet and kind despite being spoiled all her life from people.
Loves bad jokes.
Can’t stand Karen’s.
Favorite Season: Spring.

🩷Samantha Angelica Delroy🩷
Spear/ Light/ June 2 1932/ Real Age: 92/ Age she plays by: 25/ Gemini/ 6'0/ Straight - She/Her/ Class: JNR Class C12/ Nationality: Japanese/British (She was born in Japan and lived there until she was bought into the GWR) Voice Claim: Cristina Vee
🩷Headcanons and Facts🩷
Her original name was Akahan (that means rose) Wakasa Shima, but changed her name when she came to Sodor.
She was built into the Wakasa Railway but also one of the 60 C12's that was converted to metre gauge and shipped to China to work in Zhengding and Taiyuan.
In 1956 the Datong–Puzhou Railway north section was reconverted to standard gauge, and they were transferred to Vietnam, and they were classified 131.
After a while of running around on Japan, China, and then Vietnam, she had enough and when she got back to Japan, she heard of an engine, an old friend, Hiro, who was going to a magical place called Sodor. Samantha begged Hiro to let her come with him and he agreed.
When they arrived on Sodor, neither one knew how to speak English and was given the name Samantha.
Samantha was determined to show she was better than Hiro. She did everything in her power to make him look bad and unfortunately it worked… Hiro was left on a siding to rot away while Samantha lived her best life on Sodor.
She eventually made her way onto the mainland, where Samantha met Toad… And after they married, she made his life and her coworkers lives a living hell… abusing Toad to the nines (I won’t go into detail, if you think of something horrible, she probably did it to poor Toad) and making sure he kept his mouth shut about it all… until he didn’t.
One day, Toad finally snapped and told their controller everything she was doing to him and he had her scrapped much to her dismay, whining and screaming. To take her place, he brought in Oliver, an engine from Northern Ireland, which Toad fell instantly for.
Samantha was determined to save herself from scrap and she did, she somehow managed to run away to Sodor, and did end up in the same Barrow Scrapyard as Oliver and Toad, but instead of Douglas saving her, he saved them! Unfortunately, Samantha did give herself away and was promptly scrapped by the diesels.
Now she roams the scrapyards, looking for her husband but to no avail…
Loved Boba Tea and drank it all the time.
She and Hiro were good “friends” and went to many.

🩷Lily Caledonia Dübs🩷
Shield/ Earth/ March 20 1885/ Age: 139/ Age she plays by: 23/ Pisces/ 5'3/ Polysexual and Demisexual - She/Her/ Nationality: Scottish/ Home Town: Laxey, Isle of Man/ Voice Claim: Ashley Jensen (Nanette from Gnomeo and Juliet
🩷Headcanons and Facts🩷
Is usually called “Lily the Spring Engine” because she only works on the island during the Spring.
This unique one-off 0-6-0T locomotive dates from 1885 and is the only engine on the line to have been built by Dübs & Co of Glasgow.
Purchased to tackle the steep gradients of the Foxdale Railway it was ideally suited to the job, being heavier and more powerful than any other steam locomotive on the island.
After the merger in 1905 it was numbered 15 in the Isle of Man Railway fleet (having previously been Manx Northern's No. 4) and only saw sporadic use, most notably on Ramsey Cattle Mart specials and for snow clearing trains and emergencies.
It was reboilered in 1923, receiving the first boiler on the IMR to carry "Ross" pop safety valves.
When the Marquess of Ailsa took over operations in 1967 it was repainted into a spring green livery and saw service once again acting as Douglas station pilot, operating on the south line until 1968. It proved attractive to railway enthusiasts when restored to service by Lord Ailsa.
By 1975 it had been painted into Manx Northern colours and placed in the new museum at Port Erin, where it remained until 1993. That year was returned to Douglas by road for steam feasibility tests.
By 1995 it was widely promoted, operating on the 1 in 12 gradients of the Snaefell Mountain Railway as part of the centenary celebrations.
This had historical precedent as Caledonia had been leased for construction purposes in 1895. It has since been one of the serviceable locomotives, having been painted into a non-prototypical dark blue livery in 1999, later reverted to the intricate original paint scheme in 2007.
The locomotive was the subject of a major rebuild from 2009 and returned to service in January 2013. It was prematurely withdrawn from service in 2014 with boiler problems.
The overhauled boiler was returned from the Severn Valley Railway in April 2018 and the locomotive was returned to steam in September 2018.
All of these previous bullet points are in the Wikipedia page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Man_Railway_locomotives#No.15_Caledonia
Caledonia had once sent Thomas a letter about her narrow gauge railway and how excited she was when she was able to climb the top of Snaefell, the highest mountain on the Isle of Man. (This is in the Ttte Wiki!)
She’s best friends with Rosie and had a crush on Thomas. She’d also help come up with silly schemes to impersonate him and get his attention.
Loves dressing up as different plant aesthetic like a mushroom or a strawberry.
Loves plants and plants trees wherever and whenever she can. Is also best friends with Henry.
Loves making strawberry jam and other strawberry sweets and pastries.
She is the embodiment of those Cottagecore aesthetic TikToks you see on your fyp
Used to get upset when Gordon would tell her that her outfits aren't “professional” enough but when she won a cosplaying competition that she and Rosie made up, Gordon finally backed off.

READ MAXWELL’S FULL ESSAY:
Gram·pun·cle [geram-puhn-cuul] n. A gay man who formerly dated your grandmother only to later come to terms with his sexuality but still stay in the family to take care of your mother and aunt growing up.
Alan Palmer was my Grampuncle. When my cousins and I were younger, we couldn’t figure out what to call him. He was our grandpa in terms of age and raising our mothers, but he functioned more as the classic “fun gay uncle”, so we settled on a combination, Grampuncle. While we all had amazing relationships with Alan, mine was special. I have known Alan and his husband, Bill, since birth (making them the first ever gay couple I knew in my life).
Growing up and struggling with my sexuality, I was always able to look up to them to show me that true love really does have no boundaries. I will never forget, in 2015, standing inside the Michigan courthouse beside Alan as he and Bill exchanged vows and got married. They showed me, a young, insecure gay boy, that there was a place for me in the world and that I had a future to look forward to filled with love and joy.
Along with that joy, there eventually came some pain. Alan was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in the early spring of 2020. A week or so after the diagnosis, the world fell into a global pandemic. Those first few months were intense. I heard the horror stories from Alan of how scary it was going into the hospital for rounds of chemotherapy with people who had the Coronavirus sitting in the next wing over. Being constantly in and out of the hospital he was a risk to others, and the lung cancer made almost everyone else a risk to him. With the exception of his husband, he was fully alone.
Alan did not admit to his loneliness and pain. He did not want to feel like a burden, but after talking with Bill and hearing how Alan was truly feeling, my family began to make the hour and a half drive from Chicago to Michigan almost every other week to visit. We brought Alan a pop-up gazebo and some fancy sun hats to protect him (with the radiation he could not be in the sun for more than a few minutes at a time), and we would sit in the backyard just talking and laughing for hours until Alan’s body would give in to the exhaustion and he had to go inside.
As his birthday approached, I racked my brain thinking of something special to do for him. I thought back to a video I saw online toward the beginning of the pandemic and decided to make a “hug shield”. What better gift to give than a loved one’s embrace during the pandemic? Using a clear painter’s tarp, I cut arm holes and taped together closed arm sleeves. It took a good few hours, but I finally figured out a design that allowed for full protection on either side of the hug. On the day of his birthday, we packed up the car and headed to Michigan.
After talking and eating cake, it was time for the surprise. As we pulled the shield out and hung it from the gazebo, Alan did something I had only seen at the courthouse; he cried. I had the honor of the first hug, and as I slipped my arms into the sleeves Alan and I held each other and cried together. He pressed his forehead against mine through the plastic and in between sobs he said to me, “I am so proud of you.” I knew this was our final goodbye. When Alan died the next week, I knew he went in peace. He had felt my embrace through the shield of love.

seen people on twitter talking about what got them through 2020, but twitter scary so I’m just gonna ramble about podcasts here. I’ve loved audio fiction since I was little, when my brother used to bring me big finish doctor who to listen to when I was sick, and they’ve really been great for me this year in terms of... want story but too tired to keep eyes open? podcast. need to do a mundane task but can’t stay on it? podcast. need something on before you sleep because if you leave your brain to its own devices it’ll eat itself? podcast. looking for queer rep? podcast. below the cut I’ve stuck 10 of my favourites of the shows I started listening to this year, and I promise they’re not all from Definitely Human.
Down - fiction, horror - a state of the art submarine with a less than state of the art crew descends into a newly-discovered Antarctic trench, “The Bottomless Pit” for the purposes of exploration and science! This goes about as well as you would expect. Episodes are super short and it’s entirely possible to listen to the whole thing in less than a day, although unfortunately it’s currently unfinished due to covid, so I guess it’s more that in less than a day you, too, could join me in unintentional hiatus hell. It is worth it.
Enthusigasm - nonfiction, talk - Rusty Quill patreon exclusive show in which Helen Gould talks to people about things they enjoy. It just has the loveliest energy, and is exactly what I’ve needed this year. They’ve done episodes on subjects including baking, the horror genre and trash tv, and every one of them has been a joy, even when it’s about stuff I’m not into personally. How RQ manages to consistently produce The Best Content I don’t know, but by god do they do it.
Everything is Alive - interview - Gemma Amor recommended this and she’s usually right about such things. It’s a series of interviews with inanimate objects, all of which are animate now and have things to say. I’m particularly fond of the gay subway seats and was emotionally distraught by the cuddly toy. Very good to listen to to fall asleep.
Marscorp - fiction, sci-fi comedy - Station Supervisor E. L. Hob is awoken from suspended animation on Mars and must do her best to restore the colony’s original purpose of terraforming the planet. If you teased Jonny Sims for naming his main character after himself and also playing him please get ready to forgive him for everything, as you meet Tom Dalling, David Knight, and Dave Price, played by Tom Dalling, David Knight, and David Price, and written by Tom Dalling, David Knight, and David Price. I’m furious.
Pax Fortuna! - actual play, adventure - a rotating group of characters leaves a horrified and occasionally maimed trail of NPCs behind them as they adventure in and around the prosperous island city of Fortuna. The shifting cast works really well, allowing for some PCs who are just objectively terribly people, while keeping the whole thing feeling really fun. Particular favourite PCs are Selwyn Bloodstorm, half-orc in search of gold accidentally ending up with friends, Alfonso Boyo, a necromancer but only in the most bureaucratic and horrifying way possible, and Almira Q Appleby, gnome inventor presenting such items as The Potato Peeler (may contain combat setting) to an unsuspecting public. The series comprises six interconnected smaller stories, each with multiple episodes, all of which are around 25-30 minutes long, which has been a particular joy for me, as someone who has difficulty with episode lengths of over an hour and is so often “I love AP podcasts. love to actually listen to one someday”. Pax Fortuna! is the caramelised nut bowl of actual plays, in that I found it very difficult to stop consuming it, now it’s all gone, and I’m sad. There are only two fics on AO3. Please listen to Pax Fortuna!.
Shadows at the Door - anthology, horror - A collection of quiet horror stories, mixing older tales, both classic and less well-known, and modern ones. The soundtrack is by Nico, one of the editors on TMA and Good Egg, and it turns out, also Skilled Egg at soundtracks. Each story is followed-up by a discussion of its themes, and some tangents. Also very nice to fall asleep to, lots of suggestions of new things to look for, and the stories themselves are well-dramatised.
The Monster Hunters - fiction, comedy - It took me a bit of time to settle into this - I have a tendency to bounce off comedy, apparently - but once I had I was very settled. Roy Steel and Lorrimer Chesterfield are there with fists and brains respectively to hunt monsters and be anything from vaguely to pointedly sexist because it’s the 60s/70s (it is intentional and ludicrous). If you’re familiar with John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme, you can listen out for Simon Kane as Sir Maxwell House. Some nice spooks, especially in the Christmas specials.
The Amelia Project - fiction, comedy - Need to disappear? The Amelia Project will help you fake your death and reappear in a new life. Each episode takes the form of an interview with a new client, in which they tell their story, and the circumstances of their death and next life will be decided. The creators had a stall at PodUK and gave me some Malteasers which it took me approximately 10 months to eat because I didn’t feel like I’d listened to enough of their show to deserve them. Fun fact! There are plenty of chocolate foodstuffs that will take this length of time in their stride and still be as new when you eat them, but Malteasers are not one of them. Luckily finishing off S2 of The Amelia Project has been its own reward, and I still have plenty to go!
The Infinite Bad - actual play, horror - a slowly-forming found family leaves a traumatised and usually dead trail of NPCs behind them despite their best efforts, as they are embroiled in a globe-spanning investigation of horror and mystery. Uses a modified version of the d20 modern system, set in the inter-war period, and, it should be noted, contains depictions of period-typical racism. Other CWs (this list is not exhaustive) include child death, pet death, gore, disease, misc death (so much misc death), so please be careful if you choose to listen. Also contains stairs, the inherent malevolence of citrus products, and things which are viscous.
These Flimsy Rituals - actual play, fantasy - I’m not very far into this one, due to episode lengths, but when I have the spell slots to do so I always enjoy listening to it. I’m in the first bit, which follows a group of people fleeing a living storm. They have some really lovely lyrical bits at the starts of the episodes that I could listen to for hours, I’ve found those of the characters that I’ve met very engaging, and I’m interested to see how it unfolds.
#duck listens to podcasts#I'm sure all of these are already on reclists#from people who are far cooler than I am#and are far better at telling you things are good#but#ALL OF THESE ARE GOOD#also pls rec me things#no thoughts only podcasts

Final Vigilance || 1996
A letter, tied to a package deposited on the steps of one Alastor Moody, Late July, 1996.
Alastor Moody,
Attached you will find the items left to you in the will of one Amelia Bones. As her executor, it is my responsibility to ensure that these items were delivered to you in a timely manner. Please send a response of receipt at your earliest convenience.
Regards,
Humphrey Chesterfield.
The box is nondescript, gray, and has no lock. The deep purple ribbon wrapped around it pulses with the magic of Amelia Bones, if one is sensitive enough to know magical signatures, and familiar enough to recognize hers. When touched by the receiving party with the intent to open, the ribbon flutters away from the box, leaving it available to open and peruse at the recipients pleasure... or displeasure, as it were.
In the box, if one was to open it, sits a mixed stack of papers with a slim envelop on top, bearing the words “Read me first” in Amelia Bones handwriting. Upon opening, they might be assaulted by a scent that could, if the wind was right and the recipient hoped hard enough, smell of the authoress herself.
Al,
This is not what I ever thought of when I thought of constant vigilance. But as the days creep on and our moments seem more precious, I don’t think I have the heart to not prepare for all of the things that we know could happen. If I die in this, I know that it will not be in the quiet stone of the court room, or in the fortified walls of my office. I can’t hope that it will be brief and painless, but what else has been in this life so far?
I’m so sorry-- I need you to know that. I know that apologies don’t come easy to either of us, so let me take this final moment to settle the dust and say what has needed to be said, not in anger or in passion, but merely in truth.
I have loved you in so many ways. As a guiding light, as Edgar’s confidante, as a lover, a friend, a supervisor, a partner-- the ways in which you have filled capacities in my life is ever changing but constant. You have always been a constant in my mind and in my heart.
And I’m sorry that it wasn’t ever able to be more than that. We have such little time these days, and I won’t waste it by lingering on half regrets and harsh words. I love my life, and would choose it all again if given the chance-- but I will forever be remiss that it came, in part, at the cost of your own happiness. Life would be simpler if everyone we loved could have all of us all of the time, but then we wouldn’t be able to see the lightness through the dark, or taste the sweetness in what is bitter.
These years have been so unflinchingly harsh to you, and yet you soldier on, undeterred. Though we had our own ways of handling ourselves, I will always believe that our core convictions stem from the same root: to ensure goodness prevails no matter the cost. I believe in that and in you, and know that something as trivial as my passing won’t impede on your life’s purpose, though we never could agree as to how to get a job done right.
Trust your own counsel (though you certainly don’t need me to tell you that), and please, though I know you are as stubborn as a mule and probably won’t, look upon our time as what it was-- a gift, a lesson, a sweet moment in time where we were able to learn the many ways in which love presents itself. I will forever be indebted to you for that, and I love you dearly.
x Amelia
Below the letter sits an amalgamation of memories-- ticket stubs, Polaroids that were once claimed to be destroyed or vanished, receipts from missions, a poem written on a piece of parchment faded thirty years, and a diary dated 1966 with a Hufflepuff stamp on the cover which, when opened, was started under an oak tree by the lake on a late fall day.

This is also concern that 6% of the farmers sell their crop on MSP price, rest farmers sellout at lower price of MSP. The acts are more favourable towards the companies and not legally empowering the farmers. Patrick Lavery is New Jersey 101.5's afternoon news anchor.Third the Essential Commodities Bill allow food hording but farmers are worried about it because unlimited stocking can lead to artificial price fluctuations and low prices for farmers after harvest.

Mapping baby’s day!
Some parents hold baby to a strict schedule. Others ignore the clock and accompany the flow. How will you lay out your routine?
Many turns of the clock ago, I used to be a young, first-time mother of the foremost easygoing baby on the earth. I took my daughter to restaurants, movies, trips overseas;
she ate when she was hungry and slept when she was tired, whether we were reception or away. Past eight weeks aged, she slept soundly when it had been dark, and she or he woke with a smile when the sun shone through her window. When someone asked me what time my baby went down for a nap, I didn’t have a solid answer.
Based on my very own parenting experience, I had little compassion when baby and that I met up with a university friend who also had her first baby in tow. We had done some shopping and were beginning to mention where to travel for lunch when, suddenly, she checked out her watch and nearly bolted for the door. it had been almost time for her baby to require his nap—if he didn’t, the remainder of the day would be ruined! I didn’t object, but I even have to confess to thinking, can’t baby sleep in his stroller while you keep it up together with your day?
Ten years later, I check out our firstborn children and see some key differences. My girl remains sweet and mellow, but she’s rather sluggish when it’s time to go away for college within the morning, and her showers last well into the double digits. My friend’s son is very energetic, athletic, and always in a hurry. I even have to admit, my friend is far more organized and efficient than I am! While we each have four kids now, her house looks pretty on the brink of perfect in the least times. My house looks … well, it's like four kids sleep in it.
So who had the “better” system? Each folk had a life-style that fit our personalities and our babies’ temperaments. We were comfortable and our babies were happy. Both babies are beautiful, brilliant middle-schoolers now—each wonderful in their way. Did the schedules we set (or didn’t set) for our babies determine the type of massive kids they might grow into? To some extent, yes, probably. Scheduling is one slice of the nature-vs.-nurture pie. But as far as each folk made time for the important things and let our youngsters know they were loved, we were both on the proper track.
So the question is, should your baby get on a schedule? If so, how rigid should that schedule be? and the way should it's determined? Before these questions are often answered, take a glance at your life and yourself. Then you'll conjure a sensible vision of what a successful day seems like for your family.
What are some time constraints? It’s one thing to mention, “I’m getting to let baby determine her day—sleep when she’s tired, eat when she’s hungry.” But that’s not a sensible approach for a working mama or a family with multiple children who got to be driven certain places at certain times. once I had my first baby, I started to figure from home as an intern for P&N. I had nothing but flexibility, so the baby’s schedule could vary from day to day. When the baby was tired, I might put her down for her nap, pull out my laptop, and obtain some work done. After she woke, I might feed her whenever she acted hungrily, take her for walks when the weather was nice, play together with her, and skim her books at any time of day. She naturally slept well in the dark, regardless of what time I put her down, and she or he was liberal to sleep in if she wanted to.
When my first was a touch older, though still a baby, I started to figure for P&N full-time, commuting from the Atlanta suburbs to an office closer to the town center. Every working day, my daughter suddenly had time to rise and an area to be. She became familiar with spending set hours at a babysitter’s house while I used to be at work. Mealtimes and sleep time became more structured because they had to. Still, she rolled with it pretty much.
Today, I still have a baby. He looks remarkably like that first baby (especially once you stick a bow in his hair). But poor baby No. 4 doesn’t have tons of say in his schedule. Every morning, he's up and dressed and fed breakfast in time to require the large kids to high school, then straight to the gym for mama’s fitness fix, then immediately home for his nap. He generally gets to make a decision when he will awaken from his nap (sometimes, though, he doesn’t get that luxury). Then it’s time to eat, run errands, and head back to high school to select up the youngsters. Afternoons and evenings are dominated by the large kids’ activities, counting on the season, then dinner and bed.
In summary, I’ve experienced the slow lifetime of the first-time mom, the ordered lifetime of the working mom, and therefore the chaotic lifetime of a mom of 4. All are pretty great and are available with unique challenges. As you think about a timetable for your baby, take a glance at the parameters that govern your household. What time does the baby get to be up? Can she set her schedule, or will outside demands necessitate a wake-up call? Does the baby have unrestricted napping opportunities, or are there certain times that employment best for the remainder of the family?
What does a baby need? A newborn needs about 16 hours of sleep in every 24-hour day, but her nap times are rather unpredictable. At three months, a baby still needs 13-15 hours of sleep every day, including naps that are getting longer and more regular. Since three months is additionally the benchmark when many mamas end maternity leave and return to figure, it’s an honest time to plan out a schedule that will work for you and for baby within the months to return.
Getting into a routine together with your tot starts with observing her innate patterns. Polly Moore, Ph.D., author of The Natural Baby Sleep Solution, recommends putting baby down for naps at regular intervals supported a biological rhythm called the essential rest and activity cycle, or the BRAC. The BRAC is species-specific: for humans, it’s a 90-minute cycle. Moore found that babies consistently exhibit sleep behavior in tune with the BRAC, growing tired 90 minutes after they last awakened. “After 90 minutes of wakefulness, the baby has completed the alert phase governed by his inner clock,” says Moore. “This is when the baby has the simplest chance of falling asleep quickly and simply.
Moore’s BRAC-based program works wonderfully if you've got a schedule that allows it, or if your child attends a daycare that’s hospitable that sort of personalization. Following baby’s natural BRAC may be a way of letting her establish a schedule that you simply can work with, instead of the opposite way around. “This isn't a program of putting the baby ‘on a schedule,’” Moore emphasizes. “Rather, the approach is to find out to follow your baby’s inner schedule, your baby’s own internal sleep, and wake rhythms.”
If your day-to-day is more rigid, or if your daycare has specific nap times they need to adhere to, you'll find more success in setting baby’s schedule for her. Teressa DeDominicis, mother to Amelia in Fredericksburg, Virginia, knew her family would operate more smoothly with the baby on a daily schedule, particularly when DeDominicis returned to figure after six weeks of maternity leave. “I talked to my daycare provider about their infant room schedule,” says DeDominicis, “so I could make the transition as seamless as possible, which worked rather well .” counting on the requirements of the family, a workable schedule could also be set by the oldsters, the daycare or the baby herself, then shared with the opposite members of your baby care squad.
What works for you as a mother? “I kept all of my babies on schedules,” says Kasey Tross, a mother of 4 in Chesterfield, Virginia. “The better part about it had been knowing what they needed once they cried. supported where we were in our schedule, I knew if they were hungry, tired, or had an upset tummy.”
I feel most confident as a mother once I understand why the baby is crying so that I'm ready to meet his needs. Even once I completely ignore the clock, I stick with a pattern of wake-eat-play-sleep during the day, and wake-eat-sleep in the dark (until the wake-eat part shrinks and disappears, leaving only wonderful sleep!). Adhering to the pattern lets me know that if my son is fussing, albeit he’s eaten recently, it’s because he now must sleep. regardless of the length of every nap, the baby will expect to eat right when he wakes up.
Following a schedule—or a minimum of a pattern—can help both parents (along with other regular or occasional caregivers) know what to expect. DeDominicis says of her baby’s schedule, “It helps manage expectations together with your spouse about what's needed when.” If the baby always goes down for a nap at 10 a.m., then there’s no need for debate when he seems irritated at 9:55 a.m.
Schedule-keeper Laurel Osai, the mother to Ephraim in North Salt Lake, Utah, says, “Some people feel that a schedule could be binding; however, I find it freeing as I can plan my day accordingly.” Osai makes an honest point: Guessing at baby’s needs is often frustrating and ineffective. Plus, consistent with Moore, if you would like the baby to urge the quantity of sleep she needs, you ought to put her down for intentional naps that coordinate together with her BRAC. Unplanned naps that are available short bursts, within the car or stroller, don’t give baby the nourishing, deep sleep she requires.
Lindsey Bell, a mother of 4 in Holly Springs, North Carolina, says, “I let my first two picks their schedules and planned everything around that. It worked great, and that they were excellent sleepers! The downside was they were less adaptable to days that didn't accommodate their schedules.”
In contrast, Jennifer Anderson, a mother of six (!) in Castle Rock, Colorado, can’t let baby determine her schedule because the stress of the family has them constantly on the go. However, Anderson shares that mom and baby are both proud of the arrangement. She says of her daughter, “She is simply as happy and content because the first ones who were on a schedule.”
Alaina Percival, a mother to Edwin in San Francisco, California, frequently travels long distances together with her young son. While she doesn’t hold him to any kind of schedule, she shares that he typically takes three naps each day, sleeping reception or away, slowly adjusting to the zone he finds himself in.
Families have found success with many various strategies for time management. With the baby’s needs at the forefront, pick an approach that matches your personality and works for your household. Be consistent, but be willing to bend occasionally, too. Even the foremost stringent schedule must allow some flexibility for fun!
