Fuuta looked up from his phone to find Es’ gaze directly on him. They studied him in silence before nodding definitely to themself. Even now, with the acting all over and no more prison hierarchies to uphold, it was never a good sign when the warden gave him such a stare.

“What.”

“It’s nothing.” They turned back to their own phone, their fingers flying across the screen.

“It’s something.”

Es kept tapping away. 

“Ugh, don’t tell me you’re hanging out on those Milgram fanblogs again.”

Es instinctually pulled the screen tighter to their chest. “There’s nothing wrong with them…”

“I fucking knew it!”

“They’re fun!”

“They’re crap,” he said. He shifted his position on the couch, pushing into Es ‘s legs with his feet. “Weren’t you the one who judged that it was creepy to stalk people’s real life online?”

Es kicked back. “You gave your permission – it’s not stalking. Everything is perfectly legal and respectful.”

“I’ve seen some of those posts, they’re the furthest thing from respectful… Like right now – what are you saying about me?”

It was a long-running debate whether it was strange for Es to have an undercover account (very creatively named @ Es_undercover) on which they talked about the experiment. They met with plenty of psychologists, scientists, and lawyers after the project, so Fuuta could never understand why they wanted to keep talking about the whole experience as a leisure activity. 

Their eyes flicked between the text they were writing up and Fuuta’s face, considering. 

“We’re discussing… if you’re microwavable.”

“Hah?” 

“Of course I’m answering yes.”

Fuuta’s surprise quickly turned to offense. “The fuck you mean ‘of course’?”

“You don’t even know what that means.”

“I’ve been online way longer than you brat!” He gave them another nudge across the couch. They tucked their legs in to dodge. “And I am not. That’s for like… sad squishy guys like Haruka. Or fucked up little girls like Amane. Or someone who’s both, like you.”

The calmness in Es’ expression finally cracked, and they swatted back at him. “Oi! Just for that I’m posting this publicly.” They made a show hitting the share button.

“You take that down!” Fuuta lunged for their phone. Es managed to keep it out of his grasp, but only barely. Fuuta’s scrambling for it dragged them both off the couch and onto the floor. Even as Es smushed their palm in his face to keep him away, Fuuta reached up to yank the hood of their sweatshirt over their eyes.

Some yelling, kicking, and tugging later, Fuuta emerged victorious. He held the phone close, curling in on himself to withstand Es grabbing at his arms and covering his eyes. He managed to read the reactions and replies that were quickly flooding in.

A pair of feet appeared next to them, having come to investigate the outburst. 

“Amane–!”

Es snatched their phone back, but this time it was surrendered up readily. They smirked at the microwave gifs people were already sharing.

Fuuta untangled himself to look up at her with desperate, pleading eyes. 

“Am I… microwavable…?”

“Huh? Oh, definitely.”

Concept that just popped into my head: Milgram characters doing "get ready with me" videos

Aw, this was so fun!! I always love your hc style of normal au/everyone's chilling, and tried to go the same route -- it was so cute to think about :D

Haruka: Puts on his outfit for the day and explains everything in great detail. He has lots of comfortable items and fun colors. At the very end he speaks off-camera and you realize Muu was standing there cheering him on the whole time. He gets a lot of encouraging comments, and Muu and Fuuta keep an eye on the account to delete any nasty ones that may come in.

Yuno: Shows her outfit, makeup, nails, and bag she’s taking with her. She tries out a variety of styles (not just sticking to the more feminine looks we see in canon). She gives a bit of a tutorial and tips as well as showing things off. Has a main account for her daytime outfits, and a more private one for her nighttime looks. Mahiru is the only one aware of the latter account.

Fuuta: Layers. Lots of layers. There will be three sweatshirts laid out in front of him and you wonder which he’s going to choose before realizing he’s putting them all on. He focuses most on his sneakers and sportswear. He plays loud music over the videos, not knowing what to say. Has gotten into comment-section arguments over those yellow socks.

Muu: Also does a full look at her appearance: nails, accessories, etc. She mentions where you can buy everything, and it’s unclear whether she was sponsored by these brands or is just excited to talk about them. (Whether they’re actually together or not,) she’ll have Haruka on as a guest a lot to show off couple’s outfit ideas. She definitely has the biggest following, and loves recommending Haruka and the others’ accounts.  

Shidou: He doesn’t really know what he’s doing, but his account is getting tons of views so the others keep encouraging him to make videos. He’s just glad to be connecting with the other prisoners as they show him how to do it. He dresses in a mix of the sleek patterned shirts and dad fits, and both types of videos are equally popular. 

Mahiru: None of the serious-faced flirts or little pouty faces – it’s all smiles for her. Every video is basically a full tutorial – she has captions and a voiceover giving commentary on everything. She has the next biggest following, and interacts constantly. She loves getting questions “what should I wear on an x type date?” “How do I dress to impress x type of person?” because she always comes up with the perfect outfit to help. 

Kazui: A bit confused as well, though he does know a lot about style. His interro question makes it seem like he wanted kids – I think he’d really get into the account as one of those “Dad How Do I” types. He talks about matching things, clothes upkeep, shaving/hairstyling. 

Amane: Also wouldn’t have made the videos without prompting from the others, but enjoys it a lot. She usually talks about practical things instead of “vain” fashion: she’s excited to show off a new raincoat, sturdy shoes, useful pockets, etc. Over time, she leans into outfits that are more cute and colorful, gaining confidence in them. 

Mikoto: He started the account as something for one of his design classes, and got really into it. He likes to challenge himself with unique styles and clothing articles, making pretty much anything work. He keeps everything professional in case an employer/coworker sees, but isn’t afraid to add some flirting and flaunting in there. If he’s open about his plurality, he’ll have some special videos, “choosing an outfit for John today!”

Kotoko: Like Amane, she’s more excited about practical outfits. She’ll show off clothes that have good flexibility, places to store and conceal objects, and heavy duty materials. She’ll rate jackets, boots, and other “military-grade” things for what has worked best for her. She’s very attentive to the accounts that follow her – she does full background checks to make sure her info is being used for justice, not more crime. Mahiru convinces her to do a special where she puts all her piercings in and talks about why she chose them/what they mean.

Es: Experiments with a lot of new styles, trying to figure out what they like. They also just play music in the back, not having much to say about each outfit. They'd rather focus on their series of dressing-up-Jackalope videos, much to his dismay...

teehee the silly thing is that i have nothing planned for anyone except for their basic backstories T-T i was thinking about the tsukacchako inspired ocs being the first "three person round" of alien stage cause normally weve seen them do only two but thats just an idea OR something would happen with one of them causing them to pull out of the competition but id really like for the three of them to compete ....

i know i definitely need to start thinking about how the tsukacchako ocs (i need a name for the three of them T-T) got together, that could be fun to write in the future .... i also need to think more about their like characters without making them copies of tsukacchako, cause like i said before theyre just like skeleton versions right now they need more MEAT

now onto ur sillies .... i def think hoshiko would get along with all of them!!! in my head rn shes kinda like cindy but way less naive and not AS nice (like, not "make flower crowns for everyone in the class" nice but still "goes up to everyone and starts a conversation" nice). i think shed like kaaya the most out of ur sillies, i can see her going up to her and saying "ur hairs pink like mine!! and i love ur clips!! do you like space?" shed prob like minwoo the least tho, shed think his attitude would ruin the vibes

amane is definitely civil with the three of them, but i dont think amane would be like FRIENDS with them. i dunno how secretive the siblings would be about their lil things but i can see amane figuring it out at some point i dunno what amane would do about it but amane would find out

nariko doesnt really like anyone so she wouldnt like them T-T if theyre around minwoo when he says something self-deprecating theyd probably be like "yeah thats right youll never be like me IM the main character!!!" i can see her liking (altho liking is a strong word) atomu the most, she sees his determination and dedication and if atomu ever asked for help with singing or like rehearsing shed probably (after a while) say yes

you already know this but out of the three wade is interested in minwoo the most. hed definitely make comments about the siblings' secrets though, just to tick them off a little :3 hed make comments about minwoo too but they wouldnt be with the intention to hurt just to be a little silly goofy

27. Calm before the storm (something that isn't going to happen, but i'd like it to.)

The woman is old, which nettles Jasmine outrageously. Althea breaking her vow is one thing -- Althea breaking her vow for a short-lived mongrel who wears the face of a desiccated crone is another thing entirely. Her hair is graying, with threads of pale copper offering a vague suggestion of a much prettier color -- whether she could have been a beauty is immaterial to Jasmine, because she isn't now. Nothing beautiful has that many lines. Beauty is smooth, with soft skin, uncalloused hands, the scent of flowers always lingering, silky hair with its natural color persisting. Jasmine's own hair is, of course, a sweet, vibrant blonde the color of corn silk and sunshine, and she doesn't even have to dye it to get it there.

The woman sits down in front of Jasmine much more smoothly than Jasmine would expect from a thing that looks that old. Her eyes are flint-sharp, which Jasmine supposes is meant to scare her, but Jasmine's seen eyes like that at many a high society function, and this woman still has dirt on her boots.

She waits for the woman to speak. The first person to speak gives up the power. But the woman only looks up at Jasmine with a face of blank impassivity, which--well, obviously it doesn't unsettle Jasmine, because it is meant to unsettle Jasmine, and a woman of noble blood is never unsettled. Jasmine thins her own lips and stares back at the woman.

The woman cocks her head. Evenly, she says, "I can see why Althea loves you so much."

Jasmine senses the blade lurking under the words. Best to strike before she is herself struck. "Here to size up the competition?" she asks, smiling sharply. "Because I can assure you--"

The woman lets out a bark of laughter and presses her fingers to her mouth, eyes shining with an amusement that Jasmine does not like. "Competition?" she says. "You grabbed a child by the collar and begged for her attention, for a century. You are sustained in life by that child's everlasting charity and loyalty. Althea loves you not because you are beautiful, or because there is anything of worth in you, but because she is too good a person not to love you."

She reaches across the table. Touches Jasmine's hand.

"I am sorry," she says, her smile knife-sharp. "It must be a torturous thing to live every day knowing that Althea March sees you as nothing but a miserable responsibility, and holds only pity in her heart for you--with not a single drop of real love for the woman that you are."

so!! rei grew up pretty neglected by her parents (they were workaholics and rei is hyperindependent) so she kinda drifted around twisted wonderland and ended up interested in infobroking after getting involved with the wrong crowd.

she's barely home and motel hops for a lot of her teens and ends up in the isle of sages because if there is ANYONE who's mysterious enough to grab her attention it's crowley. when she was ~16 she offers to be his personal assistant (to get insider info on nrc) and crowley is like "how kind and generous of me to lend a helping hand to a curious young mind!! :D" because we all know he's not above child labor lmao.

thus, begins rei's adventures in nrc. she's his personal assistant for about a year and stays in ramshackle until the prefect comes into the world. immediately she is interested and crowley tells her to deal with the prefect and she's like "the only way I can keep an eye on grim and yuu is if I was a student??" and crowley is like "GREAT IDEA." and she's shoved into the second year and is named the ramshackle prefect and the twst story starts~

here are a couple of fun facts while we're at it:

- rei skipped out on a lot of school growing up out of pure boredom, so while she is intelligent, she struggles with technical classes and her whole attitude is just: who cares if im failing IM NOT A REAL STUDENT

- adding on, she's good with magic and has a natural talent for it but put her in front of an exam and she's fucked

- she is really crowleys assistant first and foremost and he does know that she's capable which is why he dumps work on her. but when overblots happen, she's the first line of defense

- ramshackle dorm is still pretty messed up because rei is the type to just sleep and leave so she only really fixed it up when the prefect and grim arrived

- way too interested in overblots and crystals for her own good and pockets them to study them for a bit before grim eats them (she most definitely overblots at some point but I cant decide if she survives it yet)

- she starts a club called the yearbook club which is just a fake reason to keep track of what's going on in nrc and I kinda made that the reason she also pushes the prefect to take pictures with the ghost camera

- she would sell out crowley for one corn chip (she just needs to get more dirt on him)

- like i said, she doesn't see herself as a real student so whenever she attends housewarden meetings she gets bored and stirs the pot. obviously ppl like riddle and azul get pissed at her frivolous attitude but she turns it around and goes:

Character death discussion under the cut :(

My original plan for Myosotis involved all of Milgram taking place within a single moment in normal-world-time on a Wednesday night. It definitely was real, (like, it wasn’t ambiguous whether it was a dream), so the prison executions would be the true experience for the prisoners. The last and only thing they remember is that death, at the hands of Es and the voices. They have no idea that the real world shifts around them to create a believable reason they never woke up the next morning. 

When I first came up with the theory at the very beginning of the project, I wasn’t considering anyone dying this early in the trials, so I’m shifting things around a bit to distinguish the two. That previous method now applies to the current three deaths, and the executions actually happen after the guilty character has woken up. This means the Milgram execution was more for our/Es’ experience, since the prisoners forget about it as soon as they wake. (And then die within the day in the real world.)

I wanted to stay true to the method of death, so I avoided suicide/murder for the real-world execution counterparts. It was meant to be Milgram’s inevitable punishment, existing above emotions or natural consequences, so I pictured all freak accidents that have no other effect except to kill the intended prisoner and not create any new murder investigations. However, these three prisoners did have very human and emotional deaths, so I’m debating on how much I want events to spill into the real world… I guess there could be homicides that are just so odd that it’s impossible to get any leads, and the investigation sputters out quickly.

Some ideas for canon deaths/final guilty possibilities:

Haruka: Time of death in the middle of the night, never woke up the following day. Though his family couldn’t remember him collecting any materials, it’s clearly suicide.

Yuno: Misstep causes a fall from too high a height.

Fuuta: Room caught fire – officials believe a spark from faulty computer wires caused it.

Muu: Bee sting allergy is obviously the most fitting but it also felt a little cheesy comparatively? I was also thinking drowning since the hourglass had a feel of suffocation.

Shidou: Is found in the morning, stabbed, though there was no evidence of anyone breaking into his bedroom or home.

Mahiru: Similarly, she’s found dead in her own bed without any signs of struggle, somehow beaten to death. 

Kazui: Choking on a bite of apple – somewhere public but he was unable to speak out to get help.

Amane: Faulty wiring in the house causes an electrocution accident.

Mikoto: Fell off the platform as the train was coming into the station.

Kotoko: Animal attack seems the most expected, but I also considered a heart attack or something from overwork after she pushes too hard during a workout.

You talked a little while ago about why you don't think Shidou would make a good father to Amane (agreed) and proposed the idea of Mahiru adopting Amane. That's cute but I want to tell you about my post-MILGRAM headcanon:

Amane joins the Kajiyamas

Not Fuuta specifically adopting her, but like him taking her back to his family's house. I'm sure they'd have a spare room

I think people don't think about Fuuta's homelife much, or if they do they take Fuuta's one interrogation question where he calls his dad an old fogey and assume its like, abusive

And don't get me wrong, I don't think the Kajiyama household are perfect. Fuuta' beautician sister surely hasn't helped when it comes to Fuuta's body image issues and I'm betting they're all a bunch of tsunderes too embarrassed to say they love each other

But in a series where most of the abused characters are still convinced their abuser loved them/acted out of love. Seeing a guy not be afraid to call his dad a loser is almost a green flag

I think it'd be good for Amane to not necessarily be adopted as the lone child to a single parent but get to be introduced to a very different style of family unit from her own One where its normal to express different opinions or disagreements or even have arguments and not have it be the end of the world

Amane already has a snarky side to her, I bet it'd flourish in a brash household like the Kajiyama's (or at least how I imagine them to be)

I agree -- I never interpreted Fuuta's family as abusive or harmful, just not super close and struggling a bit after his mother left. (And yeah, all as openly emotional as him😭) They seem stable and very capable to taking in a extra, very well-behaved child. Assuming Fuuta is the way he is because of them, that atmosphere of being very honest and forward would work well for her. They say things as they are, little by little pointing out the harmful parts of her worldview. Like you said, none of them make excuses about harmful behavior stemming from love, so she'd get a really healthy dose of truth in that area. She never feels coddled or treated like a baby. They care for her while treating her very maturely.

I absolutely love how well she and Fuuta get along, with that snarky side to her that you mentioned. It would allow her to fit in well in the new household, getting the sense of belonging she'll lose after leaving the cult. Also, seeing how Fuuta and his sister let things slip and aren't perfect sons/daughters, she'll be able to relax about earning a parent's love through perfect behavior. She'll probably stay exactly the same, but her stress about it will fade <3

I doubt Fuuta's father can ever replace the hole she'll have from her own father, but the addition of an older sister will be huge. Amane will never get the feeling her mother is being replaced, but the woman will still fill the gap of the older, same-gender role model she needs. Her beautician job may throw Amane at first (being an indulgence in vanity), but it isn't as in-your-face as other careers. I think she could definitely ease Amane into accepting it, and over time, accepting her own personal "indulgence."

Plus, her moving in would also be really good for Fuuta! I think he'd recognize there's a ton of fun things she missed out on, and that heroic side of him outweighs the part that cringes: he gripes and groans about going to "kid places," but he's always the one to announce "I can't believe you've never been to __, we're going right now!!" This allows him to touch grass leave the house and experience his own life to the fullest. He's able to channel his desire to help society into a healthier outlet. Also, seeing her studying habits and plans for the future might even inspire him to do the same. (might.) He becomes the stereotypical good big brother, though of course he denies it viciously...

I have recently been going insane over their friendship so I'm completely taken with this idea OUGH thank you for telling me ;-----;

When I started watching If it's with you I never expected to be so invested in these wonderful characters. This is what I have been missing in some of the shows I've been watching. Ryuji-kun never belittled Amane for who he was and he never assumed anything about Amane either. He kept an open ear, he noticed, he observed and he came to understand who Amane was as a person. They had a great rapport as friends. But when Amane confessed Ryuji didn't push him away but took time to think about it, talk to Amane and find his own feelings in all this. Talk about maturity. None of the adults are doing it like my 2 favourite boys.

Amane always wrapped himself up in the fear of the past repeating. The fear of rejection was always lurking around but being with Ryuji gave him freedom because Ryuji could see past the facade he put up to deal with the pain he was feeling. Ryuji helped him overcome that fear by reassuring him that he is allowed to be who he wants to be. Ryuji gave him real confidence, not to say that Amane wasn't confident before, but now he could be free to express himself knowing that there's at least one person who would accept him as he was.

This final episode was everything I wanted from the show. Both of them were nervous and anxious and they took the time to talk and understand where they are in this relationship. That's the beauty of the show. Each time Amane was on the verge of running away, Ryuji always pulled him back, grounded him and spoke to him so that they would be on the page.

The honesty between them is something I really cherish. Ryuji never made any false promises to love Amane but he honestly expressed how he was feeling and what he expected going forward and that aligned with Amane, because that's what dating means. You take the time to fall in love and discover things about the other person.

I wasn't ready for this show to be over, but I'm so happy with the way it ended that I couldn't ask for more. This show has shot up to the top of my Japanese BL list. I'll cherish this show and these boys.
