i am once again saying midst can be so damn GOOD at reveals that re-contextualize what came before and make a bunch of things click into place. hieronymous looking "rattled" about the destruction on midst and telling saskia "nothing could have prepared me for how things really are down here" sure hits different in a post 3.13 world! his telling saskia that he spends "so much of my time feeling powerless" sure hits different! "hope's not a course of action, always, is it?" hits different! there's an extra layer to how stressed out he was during kozma's dinner party--he knew exactly what she knew and had NO idea what she was doing with that information. there's even context behind kozma's "any idea what happened with the moon?" to saskia--probably sussing out how much saskia's figured out, how much the people on midst know about what went down. it's just so FUN every TIME!

I love 3.13 ghostfacers for many reasons but chief among them is sam's little meltdown when midnight strikes and dean's reaction to it. "It's 12:04 Dean, are you happy?" "yeah, I am happy" "let's go hunt the morton house, you said! it's our grand canyon!" *smashes chair*

sometimes i get cynical about the whole show being in dean's pov but then i get this to remind me that sam is exactly as unhinged as dean would have you believe <333

Listen, that match up is going 0% the way I thought it was going to go. Like my whole life is a lie. Or maybe everyone had a similar thought and was like 3x13 is, of course, completely safe. Let me vote for another favorite 2x20 because they're having so much fun in that episode. And they're so animated. And it's Die Hard, baby!

(and before folks go 'but pluto you didn't even vote for 2x20 in the first round.' that's because 1. it was up against Awl and 2. I was pretty sure Skyscraper was going to be safe. It's also about strategy)

But also, 3x13 has no Mac and Jack together. Surprising, I know because there are a few fics where Jack shows up at the end and I have adopted that so thoroughly into my belief system that much like all the times I'm surprised when Jack doesn't show up after Mac crawls out of the sewer in 2x04, there is also not a scene with him showing up at Mac's side in 3x13. So I don't know.

But I am nothing if not predictable (except when I'm not)

Episode 145 - 7.19 Of Grave Importance

It's another one of those episodes I always used to forget existed until it came back around on the loop again. Yeah, we get some weird Bucklemming-flavored ghost lore, but it proves at least interesting in context with Bobby's ghost. Because we also finally get to see Bobby's ghost again, right along with Sam and Dean, with the reminder of the mytharc happening elsewhere feels like a throaway line in this episode.

But this one is worth watching, and we can find enjoyment, especially in meeting the hunter Annie, and reuniting with Bobby. Because after this week we'll run headlong into a cascade of mytharc leading up to the season finale. We can enjoy one last little deviation from that plot.

Neurodivergent 126 anon here. I'd love to hear your thoughts on tarlos and Mateo!

hi anon i cannot believe i didn’t see this sooner but i would love to give you in depth examples of my opinions!!!

disclaimer: i am not a medical or psychiatric professional. do not use my posts or statements as means of diagnosis or medical advice. i am simply a person who struggles with mental illness/neurodivergence and am headcanoning characters that make me happy/that i relate to!!

that being said!! yes!!

mateo:

i firmly believe that mateo is autistic just based off of his social awareness. i know he’s canonically dyslexic, which, according to a quick google search, is strongly associated with autism. also, canonically, he’s an outcast, people look down on him, think he’s stupid, or slow, when really, he looks at things incredibly literally. i think we really see this in 1.07, with his struggles with his exam, finding a safe person inside a safe space and heavily relying on that routine of answering questions with marjan, then being thrown into a completely different situation that he was expecting just to panic. plus, when he got in there, the captain asked him if he needed anything to drink and mateo answered honestly, which got the sentiment of, “it’s sarcasm, einstein.” which is such mateo wasn’t even wrong to assume. in situations like this, before, he’s had people who cared, and he is trying his hardest to relate back to the past experiences he’s had, since most of the time he’s flying blind socially.

plus, mateo is really bad with the non-verbal communication as well. the main time i think about this is the last scene with the 126 in 3.18. when the boys were going to announce that they were engaged, but everyone figured it out before hand, EXCEPT MATEO, because to him, there’s nothing different. it’s just a 126 hang where people want to talk beforehand. he constantly has to be clued in.

plus, he was raised a loner, easily influenced by the actions of others. he feels incredibly strongly but doesn’t know how to express it and reach out. all of this was with marvin. messy room, bad actions, not being able to handle grief, being a “problem child.” they’re all autistic traits.

mateo, to me, is almost textbook autistic, but lmk what y’all think!!

tk:

truthfully, i haven’t done as much research on adhd as i have with asd, but from what i’ve read, it fits for tk very well. i honestly think part of it is why he gets along with carlos so much. tk is very all over the place, except for when he’s working or passionate about something. he’s able to fixate on one thing, and let all the others go for those moments (work, foosball, lou). he also tends to let things in his personal life show much more. he wears his heart on his sleeve. when he was upset owen was depressed, his mom’s passing, his sobriety being tested, issues with carlos, all manifest in places that there should be complete focus, but he has trouble focusing his attention on something unless it is the most important thing to him in that moment, which it often isn’t.

also, he’s impulsive!! i mean, who takes home a lizard from a guys leg?? he often does what he thinks is right no matter the circumstance, like in 2.08 when he goes for the alarm, 1.03 when he follows marjan into the corn despite judd’s orders, the bar fight in the same ep, 2.01 going after the person with the crossbow almost alone until judd offered backup, stealing a firetruck to find his dad, walking out on carlos, pushing carlos when he had nowhere else to place his anger at the situation, breaking up with carlos, you get my point. he struggles with emotional regulation and it manifests in impulsive behavior.

plus, he sucks at sleeping. ex: 3.13, 3.18.

boy oh boy have i saved the best for last because there’s a REASON i kin him ok.

all rise for the president of autistic carlos nation: me.

carlos is closer to what common folk would call ‘mildly’ autistic (which is not a term i indorse. everyone has different needs and they do not dictate the severity of a disability!!!) he has lower support needs, and because of this, when he was younger and he voiced them to his family, he was met with the cold shoulder.

look i will be a gabriel reyes defender until the day i die and i will never forgive tim for what he did to my favorite dad ever but this is not to say he didn’t have faults because he did!!! and they have a lot to do with how carlos’s autism presents itself.

many people with lower support needs go undiagnosed for years, and because of this they fall into this pit of isolation from their friends and family, and sometimes, themselves. carlos was constantly being reprimanded for being too soft (likely intense, overwhelming feelings, when he was younger. meltdowns.) he didn’t get the support from his family that he needed, so he isolated even more, leading him to believe there was something wrong with him. he couldn’t get along with his sisters because of the age gap, his dad constantly cared for him but in a way that made carlos second guess every decision he made, from coming out to joining apd.

again, he stayed pretty much a loner through childhood. in school, he said all he had was iris, and his shame and mask forced him to make the decision he did when they graduated. he married her because he needed to keep himself from being the burden he perceived himself as for /having needs/.

autistic people tend to take things literally, jump to conclusions. he never asked his parents how they felt after he came out. he just assumed they hated him and tried to soothe that by marrying iris and disregarding himself once again.

it’s why every time he expresses a need, it’s in the form of an argument, or when someone else is upset with him, he brushes it off because his feelings don’t matter because they never have. he masks so much that he almost broke up with tk because he kept brushing off his frustration (2.04), and he held his tongue for so long that he exploded and sounded like an anshole (3.13). he didn’t even tell tk he didn’t want kids until the issue was forced, and i want to highlight how good tk is for him because carlos didn’t run away from the discussion and let tk have whatever he wanted, he recognized the conversation as the collaboration it was!

he has an intense need for routine, he stims all the time (hand rubbing), he tends to have explosive bouts of emotion from masking so long, and he only truly opens up to tk. tk takes care of all of the social stuff, too! carlos’s entire friend group is tk’s friends. tk talks during catan, socializes, while carlos takes on the big, rehearsed speeches.

getting to see him open up with the right person over the last four years has been an absolute delight, and i cannot wait for more.

When did you first start watching Lone Star? Who or what introduced you to the show?

I first started watching LS around the 2nd or 3rd episode of season 1 after seeing some adorable gifs of Owen & TK floating around on my tumblr feed.

I wish I could find out who patient zero was that first brought them to my attention from my follow list, but I think it must've been someone from the Skam fandom? maybe?

Which season is your favorite?

Season 3, baby!! and ngl, I highly doubt anything will top it at this point just based off where the plots have gone since.

Who is your favorite character? (Bonus: If you answered TK or Carlos, who is your favorite besides them?)

I mean - y'all knew what the answer would be to this one, right? Obviously Paul is my favorite. I do also really love TK. I know I have a reputation for loving Paul because I get very animated about him LOL... but I would like to put TK in my pocket and keep him safe forever, thank you.

If you could pick any character to be given a "begins" episode, who would it be and what would that episode look like?

Paul. One hundred percent, I need it from Paul. I know everyone and their brother is going to or has answered Carlos for this and that tracks for a tarlos based fandom... but my unpopular opinion is that we've gotten quite a bit of character backstory for him this past season compared to some others like Nancy, Paul, and Marj. I feel like Paul has been part of the core group since the beginning but hasn't seen the amount of meaty plots as some of the others have. He's due!

What is a scenario or storyline that you would like to see in season 5?

Okay, I have two ideas for this: - an episode in which some of the characters who rarely interact are somehow trapped together due to some kind of emergency/disaster/storm and must navigate their way out together while the rest of the team helps from the outside. There are a few groupings we could use for it, but I personally would have the potential pairings be one of the following (or all three at once??): Paul & Tommy... TK & Grace... Judd & Carlos. I feel like these 3 pairings are people we don't get to see interact one-on-one often (or at all) and it would be super fun! - a true HEAT WAVE. they very briefly had that heat thing happen in 4x01 but I want a whole episode about a temperature heat wave and how first responders have to deal with them. this is TEXAS, c'mon. Plus the theme of heat throughout the episode could pop up in various character's stories. Tarlos = sexy heat. One of the firefighters = heat in the form of pressure in their job like a promotion of some kind. etc.

What do you think is going on in this still?

We all know about the elusive 5x05 spicy scene that has been teased, so what is your prediction for how it could possibly top 1x02?

Where was the Tarlos honeymoon in your mind?

Something about Carlos "getting homesick after a weekend in Branson" just tickles me. and the sarcastic way TK talks about the idea of Carlos wanting to travel the world also just amuses me to no end...

so this paired with the way the wedding went down, I think TK wouldn't want to make Carlos travel very far. or leave his mother so soon. I think TK wants his husband to feel as safe and comfortable as possible and so they spend a weekend at a nice spa/resort near Austin. Some place like this: Miraval Austin and then spend the rest of their honeymoon week bundled up together at home.

I don't really understand why you think that Carlos didn't outwardly blame TK in 4x03. He spent most of the episode being angry and glaring at him (even after Iris was rescued) - not to mention the "bad relationship" comment. He also basically confirmed it when TK asked if he thought it was his fault. It was all pretty pointedly directed at TK, no one else (except, you know, a suspect).

Okay, nonny, gonna be totally honest, I have not gone and rewatched the episode more than the times I watched it a week and a half ago now, so I'm going to go off of my memory and my theory of Carlos as a character as he's been expressed to us thus far. I'm also gonna need you to remind me of the "bad relationship" comment because I don't remember it. Was it in the car? It might have been in the car. I'm going to rewatch.

Carlos DID spend most of the episode angry, but he was really glaring at everyone that wasn't Iris IMO, from what I saw. He was skeptical of Detective Grier except when she played on his worst fears.

And let's talk about Carlos and what was happening in 4x03 and how it relates to his past and his present and his future.

So, several things:

One: This is not the first time Iris has gone missing, this is the second time. The first time Carlos thought she was dead for three years. She wasn't dead, she'd had a mental break due to schitzophrenia and was missing in Austin for three years, during which Carlos told Michelle to give up. There's a big wound that exists here with how Carlos accepted that she was in her right mind when she went missing and it (IMO part of the reason he didn't see her afterwards) because they'd already drifted apart by this point. Carlos didn't know her friends, he didn't know her life, he didn't know how odd things had gotten.

NOW, he's finally gotten back in touch with her, after guilt and other things likely kept him away and she's disappeared again. In fact, she's disappeared again IMMEDIATELY AFTER Carlos asked for something he needed. Carlos tends not to ask for his needs, like ever. And he asked Iris for this thing, and she's now missing. The level of guilt I am sure he felt after the detective told him that his wife went missing after he handed her divorce papers would have been massive.

We could see it on his face, weighing on him. It weighed on him in the interview with Grier in the apartment, and when TK admits that actually, he had gone to talk to Iris, but it was fine-- we would have hit another level of Carlos spiral.

Carlos is very used to handling everything himself. There is a level of perfectionism and control issues that cause Carlos to do everything himself. Like, this is a man who bought a whole ass house without telling TK as a surprise. He's also a man who has tried to finagle things. It was entirely growth to tell TK about Iris before the divorce was complete. I am certain there's a part of Carlos that immediately worried that by involving TK he had set off a chain of events that had inadvertently caused her to have another break.

Doesn't matter that Iris thought she was fine. Doesn't matter that TK thought she was fine. Last time Carlos and Michelle thought she was fine and she was found under a bridge.

We are also looking at a man who any time HE messes up for real, gets petty and starts projecting. Do I think he actually blamed TK? No. I think he blamed himself for involving a free radical like TK to offset the balance. I think he was so caught up in his own fears and his own decisions that he couldn't think past it.

And it's not the first time we've seen this from Carlos.

In 3.13, which is perhapse one of the most egregious levels of Carlos petty bitch moods, Carlos isn't mad at TK having a relationship with Cooper. Carlos is mad that someone else is able to provide acts of service to TK that are making him better and Carlos can't. Carlos's main act of things is acts of service. And he keeps trying to provide the services Cooper is providing and TK doesn't want them from him and Carlos feels not enough. So he's a petty fucking bitch to TK to the point that he doesn't make him food and is like "I thought Coop would feed you."

He does a similar move in 2x04 after the incident with his parents where he tries to gaslight TK into thinking the interaction WASN"T WEIRD. It was weird, you were talking about not being able to hold out for sex that long and how you and your boyfriend had sex in a honky tonk bathroom and then had a "This is my friend from work, TJ, who actually isn't a cop but a firefighter, Dad, don't be mad."

And TK wasn't wrong. But Carlos is both terrified that he's upset his parents with the existence of TK and that he's upset TK to the point of leaving. When TK does come back, Carlos has a very petty bitch moment of "Or did we break up already, because it felt like we did?" Because he's scared.

This is a common occurance all the way back to 1x02 when he calls TK crazy, but we know he knows he's being weird in 1x02 when he's like "I KNOW IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT BUT IT"S NOT BUT IT"S SUPER EASY IT"S JUST A FISH FROM THE FARMERS MARKET NO WORRIES< CHAMPAGNE?" and then when TK is like "This is a booty call. I am only up for booty calls right now" and Carlos then knows he's gone too far but he freaks out and tells TK he's acting crazy but he later tells Michelle he didn't ask TK out because he was worried about him running.

Whenever Carlos fucks up, or is worried he fucked up, he gets defensive and he gets petty and it's SO COMMON. It's just never been so glaringly projection until 3x13 and 4x03.

Also, narratively, the writers set TK up to feel guilty and worried so he didn't worry too much when Carlos didn't come home at first but wasn't immediately terrified when Carlos never respond. TK thinking Carlos is furious with him and isn't responding is the whole reason TK is wondering if he's over reacting with his worry or if he's thinking of doing the right thing in the ways he wants to make it up to Carlos or demand Carlos comes home.

Here's the thing. Carlos didn't leave the apartment in 4x03 or didn't come home later in 4x03 because he was mad at TK. He left the apartment and then didn't come home because he was searching for Iris. We saw it on the call where he showed up to the woman over the cliff fearing it was Iris and was immediately in a panic. When he tells TK he's staing with Iris, he's actually investigating the house again, and lets be real, he knows TK will tell him not to. He's so focused on uncovering what's going on with Iris, he's not paying attention to TK.

He's so lazer focused in the phone call with TK. He's just staring at the house the whole time and is distracted. I've got to rewatch it for the bad relationship comment. That's the one part I don't remember and I'll go back.

And I think, there is a justifiable thing to worry about your childhood best friend who is missing and maybe having another mental break and try and solve what's going on.

I do not feel that how TK was made to feel was fully intentional but it doesn't make it okay any more than his behavior in 3x13 was okay, or in 2x04 was okay or that 1x02 was okay. However, Carlos DOES fix it and change when he is wrong. He asks TK out on a real date. In 2x04 he apologizes and then gets to the point where he sets up a dinner with their families so that he can be boldly out after his dad confirms they know in 2x08. He calls Cooper and makes TK dinner and refuses to let TK say no in 3x13. In this case, Carlos was held captive by murderers, but his focus was still on keeping TK safe every time TK got close.

I think we'll see some progress from here, but that's my take. I understood if people took it other ways. I think we were supposed to be unsure, but I'd love to ask Rafa. He'd know.

Terrarium Lights, pt. 3.13

"I was wondering if you'd come back," he called. The voice was the oddest Gail had ever heard. She heard it clearly, and yet it seemed made of silences. Like it made itself known by quieting all other sounds about it than by making sound itself. But she almost missed it in the sudden realization that this new person’s teeth with fully black, but in a way that felt like they were that color because they were supposed to be and not because they were unhealthy or rotted. Just… black.

"I'm sorry," Jonathon said, halting before he could walk to the edge of the path. "I… when I realized, I… I don't know… I panicked."

"You always were a bundle of nerves," Samuel said with a fond chuckle.

"I… I suppose that makes sense. I wouldn't know. I've, um, mostly lost my memories."

"Ah.” Samuel looked more strained than surprised. “Do you know who I am?"

Jonathon nodded. "I know bits and pieces. But… I… well, the thing is… I might forget again. After today."

Samuel frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Right now… I'm, well… I don't know if I can quite call myself a ghost, but… similar." Jonathon looked back at Gail as if for help.

Gail made a shooing motion at him. "Go talk to your friend, say what you both need to. Don't worry about me. I’ll be here if you need me."

Jonathon drew up his shoulders, and walked out into the space between two trees, right at the edge of the water. Gail stayed back. She knew she was here more as a “just in case” and less because she herself had a definite role to play.

So she decided to take stock.

Samuel was a true ghost, as people most often spoke of. Jonathon was a ghost in his own way, but—Gail understood as they faced each other—they were opposites. Jonathon was still alive. Samuel was not. Jonathon was still warm, still lit with his own odd life; Samuel was colder as the ocean depths, highlighted in negatives.

As if she needed any further evidence that Samuel was no longer in the domain of the living, Gail saw what lay in the grass beside Samuel's pale gray boots: a skull. A fresh one. Gail did not doubt that, if she looked further, she would find further evidence of this new skeleton—the creatures of the woods and the sea had done their work thoroughly, but they had little interest in clothes; there were scraps of it about. And more—around Samuel's neck was a white cord, hung with a steely, gray-blue pendant that looked to be somewhat star-shaped. Gail could glimpse something glinting dully by the skull, and knew that a more normal-looking version of the necklace could be found there.

In a way, it was a mercy. Skeletons could be gruesome enough; a half-decomposed dead body would be far worse for a grieving parent. Not a pretty sight to have as the last image of their son.

Gail slid down against a tree, planning to recover her legs before they had to leave again. She clutched her shawl closer around her.

Jonathon and Samuel were talking—Jonathon might have been crying.

Beyond them, a white-gold sun, dazzlingly brilliant, poked its tip over the horizon; it sent a trail of shivering light skidding across the ocean.

"Lord," she said, gripping her shawl as she looked up at the leaves above her, towards the sky, "your creation is beautiful, and your people are stranger than ever I knew—and I've met some odd ones in my time. I wish I knew some kind of last rites to say over the boy, some prayer or passage that the preachers would know. I don't, sad to say. The best I can do is pray that you would lay his soul to rest, that he may find his way home to your arms and to his family's. And be with them Lord, as they are left behind. Again. Lay your peace on them to help them through this new trial. If I can be of comfort to them, I pray you’d let me."

She continued praying for a while yet, and recited what she could remember of 1 Corinthians 15.

The sun was hard to look at, so large and bright it had become, and the woods around them sounded with the lives of a hundred different creatures in the middle of their morning routines. Jonathon came back. He pulled a sleeve across his eyes, face as wet as a semi-ghost's could be.

“First,” he said, his shoulders braced. “You said earlier that you would tell me the whole story someday. Do you promise? With all the evidence and detail that you can?”

Gail nodded, solemn. “I promise.”

"Well then," he said, sniffling. "I think I’m as ready as I’m ever going to be.” He took in a deep breath that was half gasp. “It's time for me to wake up."
