Lunar New Year is upon us, and while I currently live in a place that does not give us weeks of PTO to celebrate accordingly, I've been eating pineapple cakes and sticky rice cakes for well over a week now. Yum. (Mooncakes are notably not consumed on LNY but during the Mid-Autumn Festival.)

I've not been feeling especially celebratory. Between the fires in my backyard and the current admin holding my passport hostage, the start of the solar calendar year has sent me spiraling into survival mode almost immediately. I am doing my best to draw from the well of my support systems, from kindred spirits to a very good (and expensive) therapist I've finally reached out to again.

Lunar New Year. Spring Festival. Chinese New Year. Whatever you and yours call it, the holiday is meant to be a hopeful time, when we anticipate the eventual transition from winter to spring. I will give hope where I'm able, and I will persist. I hope you will also hold onto yours and persist.

I am determined to hold hands with my anger, and to continue knowing it. We will go into the New Year together as allies. Still, I want to offer you this famous poem about hope, written by historical figure Yu Qian.

thinking abt a royal au with crown prince!character who’s set to inherit the throne. every king needs a wife, and who better to be his than the princess of your kingdom. the betrothal contract is signed quickly, and as the princess’s beloved lady-in-waiting, you are accompanying her to character’s kingdom. loyal to your princess, you do everything in your power to ensure no harm comes to her, including mishaps in her love life. you’ve pushed away many unworthy suitors for her, and it is only to you that she confesses that she doesn’t want to marry character. she’s in love with her knight, and begs you to find a way to make character seem unsuitable so she can get out of this arrangement. as her first lady-in-waiting, you have to do anything for her. as her best friend (maybe her only friend), you want to save her from a fate she didn’t choose.

character has heard rumors of the strict, cold lady that the princess keeps by her side. for generations, your family has kept in good favor with the royal family, and your own father serves as one of the king’s aides. if you make a convincing enough argument that character is unfit to be wed to the darling princess of your kingdom, the engagement will be called off. character is somewhat aware of this, and because he considers marriage to be a political partnership and nothing more, the princess would make the best partner. this means he actually has to make an effort to woo, not the princess, but you if he wants this wedding to happen.

depending on who gets picked, character can either be a notorious playboy who is rumored to have frequent bed partners during his bachelor days + he’s very charming and quite cocky. he thinks his wit and pretty face is enough to sweep you off your feet & he’s constantly teasing you. OR, character gives off very cold vibes but he’s a total softie deep down inside. he’s not good with affectionate words, but everything he says is genuine. no one has ever seen him smile.

regardless, the fic would focus on the intimacy of tiny distances. when he passes you in the halls of the castle, his hands are by his side but his fingers reflexively outstretch, as if trying to reach for you. when you and the princess exit out of a carriage and approach him, he always has to stop himself from greeting you first, for reaching for your hand first. when he realizes that marriage can be something more than a business partnership, he has to confront himself and ask why he’s wooing you — because he wants to get in your good graces so you let the princess marry him or because it’s your affection that he wants? tortured by the knowledge that the more time you spend with the crown prince, the less insufferable he gets, you regretfully inform the princess that he’s just too perfect. you can’t find fault with him, and you know that once the princess gets married and becomes queen, you’ll be free to go home and find a husband for yourself.

when character finds out that you won’t be staying and why you’ll be leaving once the wedding goes through, he finds you. the two of you are in a forgotten room of the castle, alone. every step he takes forward, you take one back, until you’re blocked by a desk and there’s no room for you to escape.

“you may not forgive me, but i cannot marry the princess, and i certainly can’t let you leave.” his voice is low and desperate and with your naive ears, you can’t detect the longing behind his words. before you can ask him what he means, he kisses you.

the crown prince, your lady’s betrothed, is kissing you. your first kiss! a kiss meant to be shared with your betrothed on your wedding day! and yet—

you’re kissing him back.

In love with the idea of captain marvel being Billy's imaginary friend. Like, it'd be so easy. Early depictions had them as almost fully separate people sometimes, like one soul with two minds, rather than just two filters like we mostly see now.

But imagine a Billy down on his luck, hurt and hiding from police and criminals alike, daydreaming the hours away as children do, taking inspiration from all the superheroes rising to fame, making little stories to play out his dreams of saving the world with a generic action doll he found while dumpster diving once. Most of the paint's rubbed off.

Red's his favourite colour, his comfiest jumper is a bright ruby even after all the grime and washes. Gold, too, it's shiny and warmer than silver! A hero cape is a must, big and eye catching! And he can fly, of course, like superman, and in his daydreams, when he's sore and frustrated after a long day's grind, his superhero is smart enough and knows all the right words to get the bullies to stop without resorting to fighting.

His superhero fantasy is one he spends a lot of time on, the first one he goes for when struggling to sleep at night, and he can picture it so clearly. Captain marvel is big and bright and kind, strong enough to lift the boxes for the old lady up the road who's moving all by himself, fast enough to catch Jamie who fell out of the tree on Saturday and broke his leg and couldn't come to class for weeks. He appears at the entrance to alleys when Billy is cornered, he steps up behind to cover for him when he gets caught shoplifting, he sits at the bus stop with him when it's pouring rain and the right bus doesn't seem to be coming.

And then the wizard comes, or rather whisks him away, and like a magician from a fairytale breathes life into his imaginary friend until Billy feels thrice his size and a million times more invincible.

From then on, captain marvel is a real hero, just like Billy is a real boy, and as one they save the whole city, and then the whole world, and get cats down from trees and help Mrs Victoria move the last of her boxes and she gives them a pinch in the cheek and cookies for the road and sometimes it hurts but it's so much better than he imagined.

Does the gang ever try to reenact moments from the cartoon? I like to imagine Dogday and Catnap putting their own romantic spin on things!

They love to joke about it!!!! Even Bubba joins in the fun when he sees the opportunity to make a cartoon reference. They love to be silly together!

There was an episode in the OG cartoon that focused on dancing, and it features a scene of Catnap and Dogday dancing together, except the choreography was EXTREMELY silly when converted to the real world. The duo loves re-enacting that stupid dance, except that in the end Dogday spins Catnap and holds him!

4. Who felt romantic feelings first?

Hard to say, sense they've always been like this. There's not a specific moment either of them could go back to and say when they fell in love, they've always loved eachother, you know?

Though Luigi was the first to recognize these feelings as romantic, and different than how he loved, say, their mom and dad, and that that was something important. Mario didn't think it mattered what kind of love they had, their mama had taught them Love is Love, so what does it matter, right?

This happened when they were like 7.

5. Did either of them try to resist their feelings?

Maybe not quiet resist, but Mario did consider it for a while.

Around middle school-ish age, 12 or 13, their mom sat the brothers down to explain the difference between Familial and Romantic love, and why that difference was important, kind of assuming they didn't really know the difference in their emotions yet.

The whole thing made Mario feel awful. He'd made his mother worry, his father angry, and worst of all he, the older brother, put Luigi on the line for his own selfish reasoning.

The only reason he didn't fully withdrawal from Luigi and stew in an early sea of self deprecation was Luigi rubbing it in Mario's face that he was right, that the love he has for Mario and the love he has for the rest of their family is different. He did an "I Told You So" dance and everything. He was right and Mario was wrong ha ha ha ha ha!

So yeah. Mario considered resisting his feelings for all of about 20 minutes before Luigi snapped him out of it, and reminded him why that would simply never work. Not for them.

6. If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think?

Mario doesn't believe in soulmates, he's a simple guy and not all that romantic in the grand scheme sense. Luigi on the other hand is all about Cosmic Connection and the "Over and Over again, life after life, I will find you, and I fall in love with you again and again" kind of cheesy nonsense. He'd be over the moon about it.
