I like using Occam's Razor when I theory-craft, because often the simplest answer is the best solution.
But man does it sometimes lead to the most BORING answer known to man.

I think I realized why the Project Eden's Garden execution affected me more than the Danganronpa executions.
It's the emotion.
Looking back, the Danganronpa executions don't have a lot of emotion. Sure, you're horrified but the expressions are kinda...
Leon is freaking out but you only get glimpses of his face once the execution starts going. I always thought that dizzy expression on Mondo's face was goofy. Celeste had a smile on her face and you don't see her when she actually dies. I can't tell what expression Alter Ego has cause the screen is too small and obscured by the carnage. Kyoko and Naegi are probably the most emotion we get in an execution cause the focus is on their expressions. Junko is... Junko.
Teruteru's expressions are goofy by default and the execution is no exception. Peko starts to cry before her execution but acts calm (for lack of a better word) during it. Mikan is... Mikan. Gundham faces his death head on with a smile. Chiaki tries to escape but ends up waiting quietly.
Kaede gets silly dizzy eyes. Kirumi lets out a scream (and she is actually my favorite execution to describe to people who don't know the series). Shinguuji is another one who gets a lot of focus on his expression. We do not talk about Gonta's execution. Kaito died with a smile on his face. Kiibo went out in a blaze of glory. And Tsumugi gave everyone a final wave goodbye.
What's one thing that didn't show up? Crying. We didn't see anyone cry as they died. But that's what we get in Eden's Garden. The culprit is crying as the execution continues. There's no determined expression, there's a scared teenaged crying, probably still begging to live. We just can't hear them over the music. There's no cutaway from their face. Instead we see the last look of horror on their face as they take the final fall.
The execution just feels so much more visceral than Danganronpa. This isn't an Ultimate trying to face death with dignity only to get that chance ripped away by a stuffed bear. This is a scared child (I'm 31 they're all children to me) who was never given a chance at dignity in the first place.

Underrated Parallel
Tumblr media
These two duos are actually so similar, it’s surprising that the fandom hardly acknowledges it.
First off, both of these duos are shown to both spend time investigating together in private. (Gonta and Ouma mainly doing so in chp2) While also sharing the dynamic of one being hyper intelligent, mysterious, as well as having a lack of trust in their classmates, and the other being more naive yet enthusiastic. There’s also of course the fact that they both share the same color scheme. (Toko and Komaru also share similar qualities as well but that’s for a different post.)
Naegi and Gonta also have alter egos included in their executions. And were both unconcious during the events leading to their investigations/trials.
Also, if you let Kirigiri be found guilty, both her and Ouma die from being squished by a press...(on chp5)
Then lastly, they’re similar in that Kirigiri and Ouma used Naegi and Gonta to survive so that they could defeat the mastermind.
As a side note, I’m surprised that there aren’t many people who acknowledge how similar what Ouma did to Gonta in chp4 is to what Kirigiri did to Naegi in chp5. It’s especially weird how people will claim that gontouma is toxic because of chp4 but then see nothing problematic about naegiri. Like, I get that Ouma comes across really rude and aggressive on chp4 but that was on purpose to make everyone vilify him.
He never treats Gonta the way he did on chp4 on any other part of the game. He’s almost too nice to Gonta in some instances (specifically on the jpn version since the NISA translators ruined Ouma’s character). Also, Ouma’s motivations for what he did were much more selfless than Kirigiri’s. You can’t even really say he did this because he saw his life as more important than Gonta’s as he immediately locks himself in his room and plans his own death afterwards.
Tumblr media
(Which correlates with how the writers decided to make Gonta/Ouma be the only ones to like the Survival Flag and the Death Flag. As it imo implies that Ouma gave up on survival once he knew that Gonta no longer could because of him)
I also find it strange how there are still people who actually think that Ouma didn’t care about Gonta. That was legitimately one of his most obvious lies in the entire game. His end talk with Kaito wouldn’t make any sense otherwise, nor his interactions with Gonta on TDP and DRS. I really do think that people need to play V3 more than once to to get a proper understanding of their actual dynamic though.
(And not through letsplays since they will give you their own biases.)

Himiko is a mastermind/related to mastermind
Himiko is a murderer
Himiko manipulated into doing something awful

so i'm gonna start with what i wanted from gonta killed miu and why i'm kind of disappointed they went with kokichi convinced him that mercy killing everyone was the best idea because everywhere is hell and maybe i just don't like that. i just don't like that anyone would end with we're better off dead than alive. and that's probably a personal thing which i can talk about in a different post (or not because mental illness and family stuff) but like. i hate that actually.
but what i thought was going to happen was that gonta walked in on miu in process of killing kokichi and got protective (because gonta is - as a character note - extremely protective) and accidentally killed her in the process of saving kokichi.
and that's accidentally in two forms: 1) like literally accidentally pulled her off and threw her away accidentally but also even more important 2) gonta doesn't know how the virtual world works and miu didn't tell them fatalities in the world would equal fatalities in the real world, he could kill miu in the virtual world thinking she would be fine and then OH NO ACTUALLY SHE IS NOT FINE. like playing into the idea that a character who does not know how a thing works and has been lied to about how a thing works and maybe wouldn't have understood how a thing works even if he had been told and having it truly, honestly being an accident and still punished by monokuma would hit harder. for me.
but i guess you got people in both the other main games shooting for a full party kill (aoi, nagito), so you gotta have that in here, too, so. meh.
i liked that gonta put his cords in the wrong spot (because left-handed instead of right-handed), and i liked that gonta did not know that he'd killed miu and had to learn it the same way that everyone else did because gonta also could not believe that he killed someone. (but also the mikan case 2-3 trial vibes that gave me. the absolute mikan vibes. if tsumugi is actually writing the script for this whole thing, you can see her love of certain tropes and moments and characters that happened in the original series and how she's bring out her highlights, especially in the last two cases.)
i don't like that the way it's constructed feels like it takes away from gonta's agency.
like, yes, gonta chose to mercy kill, but he did so at kokichi's suggestion. almost everything gonta did was set up and scripted for him by kokichi, so it really feels more like kokichi's kill, even though it was gonta's. and i guess that makes sense because kokichi's using gonta to kill miu in self-defense - he's literally using gonta as his weapon, as his tool, in the way that peko said fuyuhiko was using her. and i hate it.
sure, the reveal that whatever is going on outside is just as bad is what is going inside made gonta so depressed that he was fine with killing everyone else is a big deal, but like.
thanks, i hate it.
hate's a strong word.
i don't like it.
but i liked alter ego gonta! waiting for him to make a reappearance, unless tsumugi is better at killing ai than junko.

For the character ask: Gonta!
Yaay! The bestest buggy boy!
favorite thing about them
He's such a genuinely sweet and kind hearted guy who'd give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it (even if it was too big on you). I love how protective he is of everyone. There isn't a hateful bone in that boy's body
least favorite thing about them
Honestly, probably his naivety and how easily he can be manipulated. On one hand it's an interesting flaw for him to have, but just... maybe if Gonta started to become wise to Kokichi's shit and grew more of a backbone, Chapter 4 wouldn't have happened...
favorite line
Oh god don't make me pick 😆 he has so many lines that make me just go "Awww baby...!" but I guess if I have to go with one I'll go with:
"Gonta will face you all! Times like this are why Gonta became strong! Gentlemen never back down, and neither will Gonta!"
brOTP
Hmmm. I do actually think him and Kiyo being friends is quite a sweet pairing.
OTP
GOSHI GOSHI GOSHI GOSHI GO-
nOTP
Gonta x Miu, because...... why?
random headcanon
You know I never actually thought much about headcanons for Gonta before, but off the top of my head: If Gonta learned that one of his closest friends hated bugs, it would probably almost shatter his entire worldview for at least a day before he eventually comes to the conclusion that "Gonta's friend may not like bugs, but that not mean that Gonta's friend is bad person", and then he'll start trying his absolute best to convince his friend that bugs aren't that bad.
unpopular opinion
Ok spoiler time
I feel as though it's not fair to say that Kokichi manipulated Gonta 100% in Chapter 4, after all we figure out from Alter Ego Gonta that he murdered Miu entirely out of his own choice. What Kokichi showed Gonta was simply so horrible and horrific that it completely changed Gonta's outlook on their entire situation. Before, he had been wanting to use his strength to protect everyone and help them escape, but after seeing the flashback light, he was convinced that the only way to save everyone was to kill everyone, and honestly, if I were in his shoes and I just found out the world was completely destroyed and there was nothing left I would probably have the same exact mindset. It basically took Gonta's protective and kind-hearted personality and twisted it on its head.
song i associate with them
Honestly, super cliched answer coming up but, Boys Will be Bugs by Cavetown. I'm sorryyy it's just that this video was the thing that made me absolutely adore shipping Goshi
favorite picture of them
I'm not sure if this refers to canon pictures or fanart, but if we're going with canon stuff from the game, then easily it's:

Hey what would happen if you swapped your wires like Gonta and then someone tried to kill you in the simulator, would only virtual you die leaving you stuck until someone logs you out? Would virtual you be fine because without the memory connection your body has no reason to assume death? Would the connection still go through as a sensation and kill your body but leave an alter ego version of you because the memories in the simulator aren’t connected?
