“I have a country estate,” Lord Oretsev tells Lady Alina as they move through the calculated steps of this dance. “The harvests and livestock are doing well, and the air is so much cleaner than here in the city. Substantial lands for hunting too. A lovely place for settling down, wouldn’t you agree?”
Most ladies of Lady Alina’s age and breeding would show great interest in this— isn’t that what they all want, in the end? To set up a nursery, to settle down in finer, more genteel lands than that of the city, to have a husband with income and the ability to provide for her?
But Lady Alina only smiles distantly at him. “I’m sure it’s a wonderful estate. How lovely to hear that it’s doing well.” Her voice is calm, collected, with none of the hushed tones and flirtatious winks that he’s come to expect from other debutantes. But perhaps she’s not that type of debutante— with the stern Duke of Os Alta as her guardian, she would not be the air-headed, flirtatious type.
No matter, though. Mal thinks he’ll have her by the season’s end. A bouquet or two at her door tomorrow morning will do the trick— he has it on authority that she likes blue irises. She’ll be impressed by this thoughtfulness, and by the end of the season, their engagement will be in the papers.

Alina just barely keeps herself from rolling her eyes heavenward as Lord Oretsev tells her about his country estate.
A glorified farm, and he expects me to be impressed?
But she supposes other women might be. Unfortunately for Oretsev, Alina is not one of those women.
She makes a hasty retreat once the dance is over and he has bowed over her hand, making sure that he would lose her in the crowd. Balls tend to be cramped quarters, even with the smallest of guest lists, which works to her advantage when she wants to disappear. She is just one of several young ladies here, all presumably on the prowl for husbands.
Everything about tonight feels wrong, without the Duke here, she thinks forlornly. She had known he would not be in attendance, but he insisted that she go anyway. “Lady Kostyk is a friend, isn’t she? She would want you at her ball. Go, make an appearance. Bring one of the maids as your chaperone and have your dressmakers bill me. Enjoy yourself for a night,” he’d urged, when Alina had pouted about the trip that would keep him out of town for several weeks.
“I only want to dance with you,” she’d said, her unhappiness making her bold. And Aleksander had laughed, kissed her forehead fondly, and walked with her all the way down the hall from his study to her bedroom.
“We will, my dear. There will be other balls and other invitations. By season’s end, you and I will be formally announced in the banns and we can stop with this charade. But until then, it’s important to keep up appearances, hm?”
Appearances, Alina thinks grumpily as she surveys her dance card. If appearances means letting every eligible man here trod on my shoes, I’d rather just go home.
She’s about to go in search of her maid and plead an illness, but she’s saved by the girl approaching her first. She looks nervous. “Forgive me, milady. The Duke seems to have arrived back in London early and sent a messenger. He’s asked to see if you would depart early and return home to greet him.”
It’s all Alina can do to hold herself back; she wants to jump up and down, squeal like a small child, run out the doors herself all the way until she arrives at the town house. Surely Aleksander will be waiting for her there; he’ll sweep her up in his arms and it’ll be one night closer to when they can stop all this foolishness. “If I must,” she sighs instead, feigning disappointment at being whisked away from the ball. “We shouldn’t keep his lordship waiting. I’ll write a note to Lady Kostyk in the morning.”
If she hurries out of here fast enough, she’ll avoid her most annoying suitors and have extra time with the only one she wants to entertain. What a splendid night.

Whistler, BC (No. 3)
The first British survey by the Royal Navy took place in the 1860s. These surveyors named the mountain London Mountain because of the heavy fog and cloud typically gathering around the mountain, but the area informally acquired the name "Whistler" due to the call of the hoary marmot. In the late 19th century, a trail was cut through the valley, linking Lillooet via Pemberton with Burrard Inlet via a pass from Squamish to the Seymour River. The trail was completed in 1877, but because of the difficult and unforgiving terrain, it was only used once for its intended purpose, which was to drive cattle. The area began to attract trappers and prospectors (such as John Millar and Henry Horstman) who established small camps in the area in the early 20th century. The area began to gain recognition with the arrival of Myrtle and Alex Philip, who in 1914 purchased 4.0 ha (10 acres) of land on Alta Lake and established the Rainbow Lodge. The Philips had relocated from Maine to Vancouver in 1910 and had heard rumours of the natural beauty of the area from Pemberton pioneer John Millar. After an exploratory journey, the couple was convinced. Rainbow Lodge and other railway-dependent tourist resorts were collectively known as Alta Lake. Along with the rest of the valley bridging the Cheakamus and Green River basins, they became part of British Columbia's first Resort Municipality in 1975.
