The William McGrath House at 110 West Forest Avenue was built in 1877. Along with partner David Short, McGrath platted the surrounding land as McGrath's Subdivision. Henry T. Brush, the ill-fated architect, designed many of the city's lost mansions during the mid Victorian period. The home itself is a wood frame Stick Style/Eastlake dwelling. A Passel Of Curious Cincinnati Street Names, Part One (A to E)
Annwood Street (East Walnut Hills) Most Cincinnati streets that memorialize people recognize men, but there are several honoring women. Anne (Bryan) Wood (1780-1867), for whom this street and a connecting lane is named, is also responsible for the nearby Wold Street, named for her estate. A native of England, Mrs. Wood and her husband James arrived early in Cincinnati and made a fortune in merchandizing. Their daughter Ellen married Judge Timothy Walker, one of the founders of the Cincinnati Law School. Although she died 30 years previously, warm memories inspired the neighboring community to preserve her name through the street signs.
Arcadia Place (Hyde Park) Soon after this 47-lot subdivision was platted in 1916, the new residents formed a neighborhood association that survived for decades. Every family on the street was automatically enrolled in The Arcadians, an organization devoted to fostering neighborhood pride. The Arcadians sponsored annual Halloween and Christmas parties as well as regular gatherings. They elected officers annually. When the subdivision was first constructed, none of the houses had addresses, so the Post Office refused to deliver mail. The residents adopted addresses based on the lot number of the parcel on which they had built their houses, so today’s addresses don’t match the standard city system.
Back Street (Over-the-Rhine) When Back Street was first scratched out of the northern reaches of the city, it was literally a “back street,” and that is apparently how it got its name. That’s according to Ray Steffens, a Cincinnati Post reporter who penned an invaluable series of articles, “How Was It Named?” that are treasured by local history buffs. So invaluable are these articles that they were collected by a dedicated librarian at the Cincinnati Public Library, where they occasioned a bit of a literary spat. Steffens pooh-poohed the idea that Hamilton-born novelist Fannie Hurst drew any connection between Cincinnati’s Back Street and the titular “Back Street” of her 1931 best-selling pot boiler. Apparently, on one of her trips through Cincinnati, Miss Hurst paged through the library’s scrapbook of Steffens’ columns, because this handwritten note is scrawled through the clipping for Back Street: “Not correct. Miss Hurst researched here, because I am Miss Hurst.”

Belsaw Place (Clifton) For reasons perhaps known only to the family, the estate of Thomas Sherlock in Clifton was named Belsaw and was uniformly praised for its beauty by the newspapers of the day. Mr. Sherlock immigrated from Ireland and made a fortune in Ohio River shipping and insurance. He died in 1895. Two years later, a short street on the southern side of Ludlow was renamed Sherlock Avenue in his honor. (Sorry, Baker Street Irregulars!) When Thomas’ widow, Nancy, died in 1899, the rural estate in north Clifton was bequeathed to the couple’s five daughters along with all the jewels, horses, carriages and artwork. When the estate was subdivided in 1921, it was announced as the “most exclusive” development in the city, with no houses allowed to be constructed for less than $20,000.
Boudway Lane (Westwood) Perhaps the most maladroit street name in all of Cincinnati sprang from the unrelenting necessity of police paperwork. Right on the border of Westwood and West Price Hill lies a minuscule stretch of pavement with no addresses, but lots of traffic accidents. In the early 1990s, the police appealed to the city’s public works department to slap a name on this anonymous wreck magnet. Since the tiny strip of asphalt, no more than 250 feet long, connected Boudinot Avenue and Glenway, the poets at City Hall coughed up a portmanteau word and christened it Boudway Lane. A few years later, the dolorous Boudway was subsumed as an extension of the equally mellifluous Glenhills Way.
Calhoun Street (Corryville) In 1843, John C. Calhoun, United States Senator from South Carolina, was very popular among the Democrats of Cincinnati. A proponent of states’ rights and limited government, Calhoun fiercely defended slavery and the interests of white supremacy. A group of Cincinnati Democratic businessmen wrote a public letter to Calhoun that year, inviting him to visit Cincinnati. One of the signers of the invitation was William Corry (1811-1880), among the children of William Corry (1778-1833) who owned all the land that was later known as Corryville. The southern boundary of Corry's property was a road named Calhoun Street in the 1840s, apparently in homage to the Southern firebrand.
Camargo Road (Madeira) A lot of folks, mostly men, are memorialized in Cincinnati street names. We have lots of streets named for presidents, governors, generals, businessmen, property owners and so on. Camargo Road – although its origins remain somewhat obscure – is likely the only street in this area named for a ballerina. Marie Anne de Cupis de Camargo (1710-1770) was known as “La Camargo” and lived the extravagant life of an Eighteenth-Century sex symbol. She was the first ballerina to wear slippers instead of heeled shoes and she is often credited with adopting the shortened skirt for the stage. As her name indicates, she had Spanish roots – Camargo is a very small village in northern Spain – but indications are that it is the dancer, not the municipality, that gave its name to our road.
Carrel Street (Columbia-Tusculum) When Columbia was annexed by Cincinnati, that venerable old town (older than Cincinnati) had its own Main Street and, of course, that duplicate name had to go. Reaching into history, the city fathers renamed the street in honor of Hercules Carrel, a legendary boat builder, whose operations were based nearby. Mr. Carrel also had a riverboat named in his honor, but don’t you wish the city would have named that street for his first name? Hercules Street! Now, there’s a name to be reckoned with!
Catawba Valley Drive (Columbia-Tusculum) Readers of Dann Woellert’s exhaustive history of Cincinnati winemaking know that most hillsides on the north bank of the Ohio were given over to vineyards in the decades before the Civil War. That was certainly true in the area around Alms Park. One remnant of those long-gone vines is a little street named Catawba Valley Drive, honoring the Catawba grapes that once grew here. At one time, Wine Press Road ran nearby, but was later incorporated into Alms Park.
Cross Lane (Walnut Hills) Walnut Hills was platted by the Reverend James Kemper, pioneering Presbyterian minister, who built his own residence there in 1794. That log house is now preserved at the Heritage Village Museum inside Sharon Woods Park. As an energetically religious man, naming a street after the cross would not be unusual, but Kemper’s intentions had nothing to do with his proselytizing zeal. He named all his east-west streets “Cross Lane” and numbered them. The only lane retaining that designation was originally named “Cross Lane No. 1.”
Dublin Court (Dillonvale) It’s a mystery why Cincinnati’s annual Saint Patrick’s Day shenanigans aren’t scheduled out in Dillonvale. Joseph Dillon, a proud son of the Auld Sod, platted the Sycamore Township community that he would christen with his own name in 1951. He remembered his birthplace by naming streets for Dublin, Belfast, Antrim, Killarney, Wicklow, Donegal, Wexford, and Limerick, and that’s no Blarney!

Elberon (Price Hill) With the popularity of J.R.R. Tolkein’s fantasy novels in the 1960s, folks could be excused for believing that this street was named for some elvish prince. In fact, capitalizing on that association a (very good) Cincinnati folk-rock group took Elberon as their band name. The actual origin of this street traces to the assassination of President James A. Garfield in 1881. After being shot in Washington, DC, Garfield was moved to Elberon, New Jersey, along the Atlantic shore, where it was hoped sea breezes would help him heal. That treatment failed and Garfield died in Elberon. Cincinnati was devoted to Garfield and commissioned a statue, still standing on Vine Street. Boyle Avenue was renamed Elberon in 1889, shortly after the statue was installed. Which only begs the question: How was the New Jersey town named? Turns out it has nothing to do with elves, nor (as believed for a long time) Native Americans. “Elberon” is a contraction of L.B. Brown, among the early settlers of that little seaside resort.
Eppert Walk (Mount Washington) Josephine R. “Josie” Eppert was 60 years old when she died in 1939. She had been a schoolteacher her entire adult life and was beloved by generations of children who attended Mount Washington Elementary School. She lived at the corner of Plymouth and Oxford avenues and walked home along a footpath that was later paved. Clifton Merriman, local real estate broker, suggested memorializing Miss Eppert by placing her name on the route she had traveled for decades.

Lillian Allen: A 1900s Woman of Adventure Who Helped Grow Dade City

Have you ever noticed the “Muller Apartments” on Meridian when driving to Dade City? The architecture is graceful and timeless, part of a contribution of sixty-five structures that were designed and constructed by Lillian L. “Lilly” Sparks Allen, and her second husband, Frank P. Allen. Lilly contributed to the architecture, culture, and hospitality of Dade City, but her story begins with risk, danger, and adventure... Lilly Sparks was born August 16, 1876, to Benjamin and Carrie Sparks in Ashland, Wisconsin. She had nine siblings. One can only speculate on why (and perhaps how) her adventurous family migrated from Wisconsin to Chico, Washington when Lilly was eleven. They platted a homestead and Lilly continued her schooling at the Manette Peninsula School. Getting to School by Guided Canoe The only way to travel to her school was by water so her parents arranged for the grandson of Chief Seattle of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes, Moses, to escort Lilly and her brother to school and back each day by dug-out canoe. On one of their canoe rides home from school, a sudden storm overturned the canoe. Moses was able to save Lilly, but her brother drowned. Image courtesy of https://depositphotos.com Lilly explained, “I learned many things…that Indians were not savages, and if you shook hands with them and were kind, they would give you baskets, beads, and the most wonderful shells.” At age 22, Lilly married forty-two-year-old James E. “Sam” Crawford in Kitsap County, Washington. From all indications, they had a cohesive and loving marriage, operating an insurance and real estate business. Sam died in 1918 with no other heirs, so Lilly inherited ample property and resources. Lillian Allen Valued Serving Her Community Lillian "Lilly" Sparks Crawford Allen Abrams in 1954. During her marriage to Crawford and after his death, Lilly was also active in local government, serving as the first woman in the state of Washington to hold a public office. She was also the only woman in the Lion’s Club, receiving an honorable lifetime membership due to her assisting a member who was very ill. On May 3, 1920, Lilly married Frank P. Allen, age 48, at the Baptist Parsonage of King County, Washington. They had met from their mutual interests in real estate, and they soon decided to embark on an entrepreneurial adventure by moving to Dade City, Florida. Lilly and Frank Allen moved to Dade City Florida in the early 1920s This second chapter of Lilly’s remarkable life paralleled the huge real estate building frontier in 1920s Florida. Literally traveling from what was then the most northwestern point to the most southeastern portion of the continental United States, the courageous couple began their new life together, creating homes, subdivisions, and even commercial buildings that can be seen in Dade City’s historic downtown today. Lilly and Frank Allen were partners in erecting or remodeling sixty-five buildings in Dade City including the Miller apartments and the Highland’s Motor Company building. The Allen Mill and Lumber Company, Miller Apartments, Allen Subdivision, and Highland's Motor Company were all Built by Lilly and Frank Allen By 1924, the couple opened the Allen Mill and Lumber Company on Fifth Street next to the old ice plant that now houses TECO in Dade City and hosted an open house. Lilly Allen was a qualified bookkeeper and partner, designing some of her own construction projects such as a four-room bungalow. The initial office was at the Allen residence but as their enterprise expanded, the old commissary building of the tourist camp next door, was converted and she served as secretary of the firm. Advertisements in the “Dade City Banner” mention that the mill perfected building techniques such as the use of sheetrock, hollow core bricks, and bungalow architectural styles. With what appeared to be incredible luck, they sold the Allen Mill and Lumber Company in 1925 before the real estate bust in 1926 and continued to build houses for a few additional years. “The Miami Herald” reported, “Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. Alen, former owners of the Allen Mill & Lumber Company, a thriving business institution in Dade City, gave a charming farewell banquet to their employees, last Saturday at Frank’s Café in Dade City.” (now Olio’s Restaurant) In 1923, they were in a partnership with R.A. Snyder for real estate in Dade City, and by 1926, Frank formed a real estate partnership with R.H. Sumner entitled “R.H. Sumner-F.P. Allen and did quite a bit of buying, selling, and developing. Lilly Allen and Frank P. Allen divorced in 1930. Frank moved to Pensacola, Florida where he continued as a prolific builder of bungalow-style homes. By 1935, Frank was stricken ill, and moved back to Eugene, Oregon to convalesce. He died on August 23, 1939. Image courtesy of fivay.org The Dade City Banner did a front-page acknowledgment of Frank Allen’s death on September 8, 1939, stating “Mr. Allen has many friends in Dade City who regret to hear of his death. He was a very prominent citizen during his several years of residence in Dade City.” His design styles still linger, the article said that he (Allen) planned and built 65 houses during 1924 and 1925, as “he was particularly interested in planning houses to conserve space and introduced the style here of built-in features. Several subdivisions in Dade City bear his name…” Lilly remained in Dade City until 1945 and was incredibly active with many aspects of the community while she continued to manage holdings and rentals. She was the president of the Crescent Theater Company on 5th Street, managing it while it was closed for installation of the latest equipment for talking pictures. Lilly Allen was an Entrepreneur and Humanitarian who Contributed to Dade City The Dade City Tourist Booth that Lilly manned to help welcome visitors to the area. Image courtesy of fivay.org Lilly manned the newly built Chamber of Commerce Information Booth on Meridian as the new highways were being built. She was very active with the ‘Good Will and Cooperation Club’ to sponsor social events and assist needy folks. She lobbied for clean-up and housing for the African American community with the Dade City Woman’s Club in 1929, hosting the May Day event that same year, and being active in the Civic League. She was named secretary of the Tourist Club as they advocated for a recreational center. In 1938, she was a board member of the Chamber of Commerce as they worked on how to deal with the problems of wandering cattle in the city during open range. In 1941, she was proposed as a candidate for city commissioner. An active bridge club member, Lilly Allen appears on the registry for social events and was a well-respected citizen and Dade City businesswoman for twenty-five years. It is unknown whether Barber or Lord envisioned it, but the original terminus of Fulton Road was destined to become one of the most commercially important corners on the west side of Cleveland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
At least since 1993, when the Cleveland Landmarks Commission cataloged historic buildings on Lorain Avenue between West 32nd and West 58th Streets during the process that created the Lorain Avenue Commercial Historic District on June 17, 1994, the City has been aware of the extent of the deterioration and loss of historic buildings at or near Lorain-Fulton Square. Before Landmarks Commission intern Don Petit walked up and down Lorain Avenue in that year, snapping photos of the historic buildings, many historic buildings were already lost--burned down, torn down or perhaps blown down in the 1953 Tornado. The photos he took were part of a City effort to save the remaining historic buildings. Many of the buildings that were still standing at or near the intersection of Lorain and Fulton when Petit walked the area in 1993, no longer are. Lorain Fulton Square has become a very different place than it was one hundred or even thirty years ago.

That same year, as Cleveland extended to just south of Clark Avenue, Brooklyn Village was incorporated, with the Jones Farm sitting on its northern end. In 1872 a plat was entered for the northern portion of the former Jones farm that marked the initial development of the district into a residential community. By 1874 the farmstead was subdivided in a series of plats that all followed the same plan as the original allotment, with fairly broad streets and spacious lots with alleys in the rear.
The process for nomination of the district started in 1994 when the former Clark-Metro Community Development Corporation hired Steve McQuillin, of Steve McQuillin and Associates, to identify potential National Register Historic Districts within its service area. Of three potential districts the consultant identified, the Jones Home Subdivisions Historic District gained the most favor. Others involved in the process included former Councilwoman Helen K. Smith and Cleveland Landmarks Commissioner Robert Keiser. In 2008 neighborhood resident Bob Gardin began work with Mr. McQuillin to update the application, and in 2011 Councilman Brian Cummins directed the new Stockyards, Clark-Fulton, Brooklyn Centre Community Development Office to put the finishing touches on the document for final submittal. The updated application was approved by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office and forwarded to the National Park Service for nomination in February of 2012. The area was added to the Register on February 17, 2012. Soon after, the Jones Home Historic District Association began meeting to form a strategy for preservation, enhancement and marketing of the district. In March of 2013, the former Daisy Avenue Area Block Club changed its name to the Jones Home Neighborhood Association (JHNA) and the Historic District Association became a committee of the Neighborhood Association. The resident driven Committee proposed three District signage projects: development of a State Historic Marker recognizing the Jones Home for Children and the Historic District, gateway signage entering the district, and District logos at each street intersection. The signage designs have been finalized and shared with the community through the JHNA.
