backgrounds can absolutely be a struggle but they don't have to be! they just require a little more creative planning~!

whether it be a commission or a personal drawing, if I'm building an elaborate art piece i focus on establishing the background First.

the background is the stage for your character! planning the background first will make it easier to tailor the character's actions and how they interact with the environment around them.

planning the background first can be the difference between your character standing awkwardly front and center with the setting going on behind them, or actually participating in their environment.

if i'm super stumped for background ideas, i browse stock image sites to get inspiration. sometimes it helps to doodle on an image to generate some ideas - kinda like you're playing with JPEGs like dolls.

that said - while i'm pinpointing WHAT i want to draw, i keep the ideas loose. i don't want to focus on the itty-bitty details until i've got the overall aesthetic and layout in mind, as i might get inspired to add something in later!

THUMBNAILING

if you're planning a big piece it can be helpful to break it down into something bite-sized before you go all in and start lining or painting. these are "thumbnails" - fast little sketches that establish the scene in a way that doesn't consume a lot of time or effort. it's also great as a little perspective exercise as a treat.

here i decided i want to draw a character walking home in a back alley street. with these photo references in mind, i can plan a layout and how the character will act in the scene. is this a candid shot? are they posing cutely? are they looking down at us in a tense way? there are many ideas to be had!

after you've chosen the layout / vibe for your idea, you can scale up your thumbnail to your preferred canvas size and start fleshing out the details. be sure to keep referring to your reference images to get additional ideas, such as storefronts, items, props etc!

3D MODELS

If you're trying to create a unique environment that photo references simply cannot help you visualize, 3D models exist! This gives you that ability to rotate / scale things for better visualization. Clip Studio has a vast catalogue of 3D models to download For Free that you can fiddle around with. i know there are many 3D builder sites out there as well, though i've never made use of them so i'm afraid i cannot recommend any off the top of my head. hell, you can even use the Sims game to design a setting and go from there!

also if anyone is going to come into my house and say 3D models are cheating: they are not. using a 3D model to better grasp an angle or get a better idea for perspective is not cheating. using 3D models to help plan the environment in your art is not cheating. they are no different than brushes; these are tools made to HELP YOU. use them!

PERSPECTIVE

perspective and angles can make a HUGE difference in the art piece. there's nothing wrong with static long shots! if that's what you want to draw, do it!! there's no right and wrong here!

but if you're finding your work to be a little robotic and stiff, slap an angle in there. consider an overhead view. these same techniques are applied to photography and film! nothing wrong with wide shots, but every once in a while it can help to throw in a dutch angle.

if there is one note i'd like to leave off on, it's that your backgrounds do not have to be 100% accurate-to-life to be Good. unless realism is something you're really striving for in your style, don't feel compelled to nitpick every brick and leaf in your art. us artists can tend to over-prune our work until our art looks a little bare and soulless. flaws can give your work character, and that's often a lot more appealing than how accurate the scale ratio between background building A and building B are [again, unless you WANT to go for that realistic look then you can fuss over those details all you like].

Thankfully they wont be hunted by krill following that event- Oxem got them to a safe place and he knows that he should steer clear of krill territory in the future <XD

regarding your recent posts on petit bougeoisie, one thing ive never managed to understand is how someone like an independent digital artist isnt considered to be selling their labour. in that scenario there is nothing they own that is making them more capable of making artworks, as they could fairly easily just be working off of a library computer or something, and what they’re selling is basicaly just the time and skill they’ve invested into producing their clients request. so besides the fact that they arnt being paid hourly and are instead charging based on how much work they’ve done, i dont really understand how they’re not considered to be selling their labour?

with something like a carpenter selling chairs or something i can more understand it as theres at least a physical thing being owned with the wood, and another being sold with the chairs, but even there it still seems like a stretch to say they’re not selling their labour at least in part, as the increased price of the chair compared to the wood is due to the work the carpeter put into sculpting it.

so far any reading ive done has been only really adressing small buisness owners who employ others and not really touching fully independent people working off of commisions or similar models of buisness, so im hoping you can clarify this for me or direct me to somewhere that does

Firstly, a clarification: a worker is not selling their labour, but rather their labour power. In some of the earlier works by Marx and Engles, they talk about selling their labour, which is later corrected to labour power. This is a more precise and useful term. When we refer to selling labour power, we are talking about the worker selling their ability to work for a given amount of hours in exchange for a wage. The worker who builds phones in a factory does not sell phones to the capitalist and their are not paid per phone. They are paid per hour. What is being purchased is their ability to work during those hours.

According to the formulation of labour in your ask, essentially everyone would be proletarian. In all commodities, regardless of who produces them and how they are made, the labour hours used to create them are factored into the price.

When it comes to independent artists, they are putting their labour power into the commodity (regardless if it is physical or digital) that their are selling, rather than selling the labour power itself. When an artist makes art in exchange for patreon money or doing comissions, the commodity that they are selling is the piece of art that they have made, rather than their labour power. They also receive income in the form of profits and not wages. This is in contrast with, for example, a digital artist who works for a AAA games company and is paid a wage for their ability to produce a certain amount of art per hour, rather than the piece of art itself.

In theory you could be an independent digital artist as someone who draws with a mouse on mspaint at a library computers and perhaps someone has done this before, but it is absolutely not how independent digital artists tend to operate. In reality, an independent digital artist is someone who owns a set of tools (copy of art software, computer, drawing tablet etc.) which act as the means of production when they produce a commodity (a piece of art that they intend to sell). When they invest their money into their further ability to produce more commodities (buying better software or hardware for example), that money acts as capital.

If I misinterpreted any part of your ask, please let me know.

hihihi! recently found your art and im OBSESSED w the style!! the texture is so cool!! if you dont mind, how do you do it? like brushes, layer effects etc. anyway i hope u have a good day!! (:

aaa this might be a long answer!! also hi! and thank you!! 😭🫶 i'll try to detail my entire process!

with sketching and lines, i use the nikko rull brush just sized down and with like 70ish brush opacity! and then i use default oil brush to shade! as well as the nikko rull also to color and such, theyre the only 2 brushes i practically use (except maybe for the airbrush but i use it more for the effects (will circle back to that))

and then i do very simple shading, not thinking about lighting or anything, and once im done shading everything i merge it all down together and i clip on an OVERLAY layer on top, it's my bff... and i usually use a bright red or orange and use a soft airbrush to lightly glaze over the drawing in certain areas to make it more vibrant (i tend to base with very desaturated colors)

and then i merge everything together and clip on a MULTIPLY layer on top and usually use a color like a darker greyish blue or whatever depending on the environment and lighting that i've decided in my head, just to make the whole drawing darker, and then i use the eraser to erase out shapes in which i want there to be some light, and sometimes i use a hard brush like the nikko rull and sometimes i use a soft airbrush to softly remove some shadow and darkness or blend in harsh shapes. and for good measures i also mess around on another overlay layer.

and then i just add noise and mess with the color balance scales a little!

It's funny you ask this because I've been thinking about making a comic (or maybe just a blog) of their pre island lives and maybe some post island stuff too! I wasn't sure if people would actually be interested in that though, I also suck at committing to things like that 😭

To answer the question though :D

- Ralph's mom died about a year before the island

- Piggy's parents died when he was really young, probably around 6 or 7

- Piggy has a younger sister (she's his cousin but they've lived together long enough to be his sister). They share a room and constantly fight over things (like stealing each other's clothes or other things, fighting over who's side is who, ect.). They were in the middle of a fight before Piggy left on that plane.

- Simon would sometimes get in trouble for not speaking/being too quiet in school (me fr)

- Simon would try and sing C# a lot (he never got it and never will 💔)

- Sam and Eric share a room and Eric has the top bunk

- Sam and Eric would sneak in stray cats and dogs then get in trouble by their parents

- Piggy's little sister would steal his clothes because she knew it made him mad, she also just preferred his clothes

- Jack would sometimes spend the night at his church

- Jack would throw choir parties at his house, usually after concerts. mostly as a way to get them to hang out with him

- Ralph enjoyed painting, usually landscapes and horses

- Jack doesn't really have friends, skill issue ngl

- Roger sleeps in random alleyways a lot

- Jack was a "Goody two shoes" and strict about following rules before the island. He's also a nerd

- Simon sneaks out a lot at night, just to walk around

- Ralph had recently moved to a new place before the island

Lucid dreams Warnings: none, g/n reader, though Gojo refers to them as "princess" and "honey"

Today you woke up earlier than your alarm rang, so you thought. Upon opening your eyes, you saw a familiar frosty locks of hair laying on the pillow next to yours. The morning light, coming from your not fully curtained window making it look less frosty, more light platinum. The long white lashes brushing the cheeks, the familiar scent and the sound of other person's breaths filling your bedroom.

The air inside the bedroom smelled like early spring, the morning breeze, getting in from the window made the hair sway the tiniest bit. Must be dream inside a dream then you thought. Well, it was not the first time, so you didn't dare to move or blink, or even breathe, wanting to prolong this moment of bliss where you can just busk under the morning rays, feeling the familiar closeness from your past happy days.

You looked, and you savoured, and you indulged yourself in this moment of happiness, not sure if you will remember it upon waking up. You must have not registered the movement of your hand, but you shrieked and hastily closed your eyes, trying to wake up, when the oh so familiar eye snapped open, the pupil constricting and dilating in the mere seconds, and your hand was snapped at the wrist by his own. “Heey princess, I thought you always told me I look like a piece of art…what, too Cubisme-ish for you today?” You heard the pouting voice, the one you’d never forget.

Terrified, you started opening your eyes slowly, awaiting for the dream to dissipate once you do. Only it didn’t. You were lying there, continuously blinking, awaiting to hear the alarm’s sound and looking at the cheeky grin and sparkling cerulean eyes facing you. Only it also didn’t. Gojo’s head plopped on his hand now, elbow landing on your pillow, your wrist still being held by his other hand. “No way…it can’t be…Shoko told me…Shoko told me...20 days have passed...it can’t be..” you started mumbling incoherently, your eyes fixated on your wrist, the feeling in which also was surreally tangible for a dream.

“Ohh now you won’t even look at me? I was hoping you’d missed me” the voice continued piercing your ears. “Or should I say ‘Honey, I’m home’ for you to acknowledge me?” he purred in your ear, pulling closer to you, his breathing fanning the side of your face, the indistinguishable smell of sunshine and all the sweet things in the world, that has been clinging to him, has also filled your personal space, now that he was so close to you.

“No way! Satoru?!” you said, perking up, taking your wrist from his hand only to push them to his torso and flip the man to his back, you now straddling his hips, palms against his chest, looking into his face in disbelief. He only smiled back at you, without a glimpse of teasing or cheekiness in it this time. Strands of his pretty hair scattered on the pillow. Minor eye bags under his eyes, which were usually absent there. All you could do was look at him and take in all these details, your eyes trailing all over him. “Honey, I’m home” he repeated quietly to get your attention.

Turned out a little longer than I expected. Oh well..

coloring tips specifically? hmm here are a couple links to some videos on light and color and shadow stuff that does a good job explaining the way i approach those things. i dont always get super detailed with it but knowing how it all works will help you make your own creative choices

ive gotten kinda lazy with my coloring the last year or so. i started using blending modes to shade with instead of trying to do all the color logistics myself so now i can just throw down the true color flats and go. but the layer modes do a good job simulating light and shadow so it works enough for me aha

i use overlay layers for light and multiply layers for shadow pretty much, with the occasional glow layer for harder lights. plus sometimes either an overlay (day) or multiply (night) layer fill with the BG color to bring the flats into harmony with the BG before shading if it needs it. used a pin light layer for a night piece recently and i like how it looks (more saturated night look). just mess around with the layer modes until you like it honestly aha. but i try to use as few layers as possible since i dont want it to look over done or anything. intersecting overlay and multiply layers helps to give that saturated effect around where light meets shadow. you can see it pretty easily here (flats > multiply/shadow > overlay/light (+glow in the eyes))

its just the overlay layer painted on part of the multiply layer. warm light cool shadow (or cool light warm shadow depending on the scene). i keep the ambient light thats in the shadow cool (no overlay) to imply it as indirect from the primary light source

UHH thats really it honestly for my coloring process. i also try to use a limited palette. i look for all the colors characters share and try to pull them from the same swatch as much as i can. it helps to keep things feeling in harmony. same with using colors for light and shadow that already exist in the BG

other random tips always include DOING STUDIES AND USING REFERENCES!!!! i know studies can be sooo boring but they really do help. and even just doing a few of them can help tremendously. make it fun draw your faves instead but at least do it using some references youll improve so fast. style is all about how you interpret the world, so look at the world and try to learn from it :)

so i get out of bed and we have guests over (i was sleeping over at my cousins house btw) and theres this one woman w a daughter my age- she's super friendly and she really likes me idk 😭 she sees me and she keeps lightly pushing and tapping my shoulders and like... putting a hand on my knee? as she talks to me? one thing about me, im not the fondest of physical touch unless i initiate it so that was super duper uncomfortable blergh

So that is an idea I had with a friend recently: Fuuta and Haruka out shopping for clothes, Fuuta does love picking out clothes for Haruka (Village Vanguard outfit anyone??), but he notices Haruka glancing to the more cute clothes/women's clothing a lot, so he gives him the push in saying "You can pick what you like as well, you know?", which gives Haruka the reassurance that it's okay to go for these clothes.

I really want Black Myth to do well. It's the first time a chinese studio is attempting an AAA-tier game and it's really exciting.
