Israel continues to violate ICJ ruling on Gaza

Geneva – Over the course of the two months that followed the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, Israel did not abide by the order and continued to commit genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. The genocide has been ongoing since 7 October 2023, amid a total lack of accountability and a complete international failure to protect the Palestinian people from the crime.

A newly released report by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor titled “Two Months after the International Court of Justice’s Ruling on Gaza: Escalation in Genocide and Absence of Accountability” contains documentation of Israel’s ongoing acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Strip. The report examines Israel’s lack of response to the Court’s ruling, which ordered Israel to take six provisional measures.

The ICJ issued a decision on 26 January 2024 ordering Israel to take specific provisional measures to prevent the crime of genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. Stating that it was convinced that Israel’s actions in the Strip posed a real and immediate threat to the Palestinian people, the ICJ cited the possibility of irreversible effects and harm to Palestinian rights protected under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Based on efforts to monitor and document the crimes and violations that Israel has committed in the Gaza Strip, as well as on investigations into and assessments of its level of compliance during the two-month period following the ruling, Euro-Med Monitor believes that Israel has not complied with the ICJ ruling. The majority of the provisional measures outlined in the ruling were violated, and the crime of genocide was carried out on the same scale. Various forms and acts of genocide were committed with the intent of destroying the Palestinian people.

Two months after the ICJ’s ruling, Israel proceeds to carry out its crime of genocide at the same scale, including killing civilians, targeting civilians through systematic and widespread military attacks, and using illegal, indiscriminate, and highly destructive weapons.

Targeting civilian gatherings around humanitarian aid trucks with direct gunshots, quadcopters, and Israeli tank shells is one of the most well-documented examples of the unlawful killings and executions carried out by the Israeli army against Palestinian civilians over the past few weeks. These incidents, which have become known as the “Flour Massacres”, resulted in the deaths of 563 citizens and the injury of 1,523 others. This figure includes civilians awaiting aid and workers in charge of planning, securing, and distributing aid.

The report also addressed the crimes that Israel continued to commit with the aim of inflicting severe physical and psychological harm on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, particularly through deprivation of healthcare, torture, inhumane treatment, sexual violence, and the use of prohibited, indiscriminate, and highly destructive weapons.

Furthermore, the report outlined the ongoing crimes committed by Israel aimed at deliberately causing material destruction to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, including forced displacement, starvation, rendering the area uninhabitable, and eradicating the Palestinian identity of the region. This is achieved through the systematic destruction of sources of income, infrastructure, civilian objects, and private property, as well as deliberate military attacks on buildings designated for religious, educational, scientific, and historical purposes, hospitals, and places where patients and wounded gather. Additionally, Israel persists in committing other crimes aimed at destroying the unity of Palestinian families and preventing procreation.

Israel has in fact committed more violations in some instances than it did in the time leading up to the Court’s ruling, particularly in relation to the entry of humanitarian relief aid and the threats and persecution of Palestinians in the Rafah Governorate, which is thought to be the last safe haven for survivors and internally displaced people in the Strip. The ICJ ruled on 16 February that any Israeli military action in Rafah under the current circumstances would worsen the already tragic situation and put the lives of Palestinian civilians in further jeopardy.

The report also provides evidence of Israel’s failure to adhere to other provisional measures included in the ICJ ruling, including ensuring that its army does not commit acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip, preventing and punishing public incitement to genocide, and protecting evidence related to alleged crimes. 

As for Israel’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid, the report concludes that Israel has used starvation not only as a tactic of war, but also as a means of carrying out the crime of genocide against the Palestinian People in the Strip, especially in the northern Gaza Strip, continuously and severely for six months now. As part of its starvation campaign, Israel commits other serious crimes, including imposing a strict siege on the entire Strip, i.e. cutting off fuel, electricity, and water; demolishing local food production sources by destroying crops and bulldozing agricultural land; and repeatedly obstructing and even halting the entry or distribution of humanitarian aid.

International humanitarian law states that Israel, as the occupying force, is responsible for supplying the civilian population in the Occupied Palestinian Territory with food, medicine, clothing, bedding, shelter, and other necessities for survival. However, Israel persists in committing grave crimes and breaching its international obligations, putting the lives of all Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip at risk of famine and extreme hunger.

In light of the aforementioned, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor urges, among other recommendations, the international community to uphold its legal and moral duties to the people living in the Gaza Strip, to guarantee that the International Court of Justice ruling is carried out, and to end the genocide that the Court declared in January was likely taking place in the Gaza Strip.

Euro-Med Monitor also calls on all states to fulfill their international obligations by halting all military, financial, and political support for Israel’s attack against the Gaza Strip, and in particular, all arms transfers to Israel. Otherwise, these states will be held accountable for their complicity in Israel’s ongoing crimes, including genocide.

Israeli occupation forces inflict widespread destruction in Tulkarm refugee camp

TULKARM, Thursday, August 22, 2024 (WAFA) – The recent Israeli military offensive in the Tulkarm refugee camp has resulted in widespread destruction to infrastructure and private property, according to local sources. Additionally, the aggression has resulted in the murder of three local Palestinians by the Israeli forces. Several others have been injured, and their transfer to hospitals was delayed due to Israeli occupation forces blocking ambulance access to the camp. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that its teams managed to treat two individuals who sustained shrapnel injuries during the raid: a five-year-old girl and a 37-year-old man. Additionally, a young man was injured after being run over by a military jeep while walking on a street in Tulkarm. He was also transported to hospital by the Red Crescent. According to Faisal Salama, head of the Popular Committee for Tulkarm Refugee Camp Services, the situation in the camp is dire. He reported extensive damage to streets, infrastructure, and private property, including sewage systems, water, electricity, and communications. Salama described the camp as a disaster zone, with Israeli forces committing what he termed as war crimes. The camp has become a battlefield with indiscriminate gunfire targeting anything moving, and snipers positioned on high buildings both within the camp and in the surrounding areas. Salama pointed out that Israeli forces have cut off the camp from its surroundings by blocking entrances and bulldozing streets, making pedestrian movement nearly impossible. Since early this morning, Israeli bulldozers have been destroying infrastructure in various parts of the camp. Public and private properties, including homes and shops, have been deliberately destroyed. The Israeli forces also demolished the wall of the UNRWA health clinic and the perimeter wall of the Al-Awda Hall in the camp. Meantime, the PRCS’s Director of Emergency Medical Services in Tulkarm reported ongoing obstructions from Israeli forces, which have forced them to remain at the camp’s edges. Despite receiving reports of injuries from inside the camp, evacuations have been limited, with only the three slain individuals being transported to the hospital with the help of local volunteers.

If immunity is understood as the social and political logic of sovereignty grounded in the nineteenth-century redefinition of healing as war by other means (the Hobbseian natural right to self-defense), then both the Freudian death drive and autoimmunity suggested the dark side of immunity at two historical moments starkly marked by death and catastrophe. The Freudian death drive signaled the final blow to the aggressive libido of the modern, bourgeois, rationalist cogito of European capitalist coloniality following World War I and the end of the “age of empire.”37 Following World War II, and the devastating seek-and-destroy immunitarian logic of Auschwitz and Hiroshima, the discovery of autoimmunity extended this beyond-pleasurable hit to this cogito’s surviving body, which then dissolved in the “excess intake” of “pleasure” over the course of the global capitalist expansion. In contrast to this suicidal, (auto)immunitarian logic, international socialist and decolonial movements, as twentieth-century alternatives to global capitalism, have proposed and practiced more constructive ways for the dissolution of the prison of the liberal-capitalist self and its key tenet, private property. But by 1989, “Western affluence,” meaning capitalist scarcity disguised as abundance, was everywhere, and the riddle of the autoimmune condition now a global problem.

This slippage of immunity into autoimmunity is more immediately obvious in concrete examples that mark contemporary reality in the social and geopolitical peripheries of global capital. The devastating story that Sharmila Rudrappa tells of southern Indian farmers who committed suicide by poisoning themselves with the same pesticide used to protect their sugarcane crops speaks to the autoimmune logic of capital, which forced farmers to kill themselves so as not to suffer the even worse consequences of not being able to pay off their high-interest loans once their crops remained unpaid-for or unsold.

The Impromptu Adventure thing is a legal defense in their world.

It's where an adventurer (retired or active) found themselves in a situation comparable to those that result in adventuring contracts. In those cases the adventurer and those involved are tried under the much more lenient standards for a professional adventuring job. It exists because otherwise adventurers might feel the legal risk from collateral damages outweighed the danger posed by say, a rampaging monster. Given that multiple countries have been saved by adventurers volunteering to fight a threat in this fashion there's not too many opposed to those laws.

But basically, while adventuring, an adventurer can commit a number of smaller crimes (like burglary, breaking and entering, destruction of private property) provided doing so furthered the objective of the adventure. It also shifts liability for a number of larger crimes like manslaughter to the monster/villain.

We have moved beyond the small actions by some workers to full scale open rebellion in many cities in the face of police brutality. These rebellions however can’t be quelled with just reforms now. No, we have reached a movement that seeks to abolish the police. A movement that is demanding the world recognizes that we are. black and that we are PEOPLE as well. Police precincts have been taken over and burned down,others are as I write this “under attack” by the people.

This is full blown spontaneous action that could NEVER have been planned let alone organized by a vanguard party. We are seeing what can only be summed up as democratic insurrection. We are launching full scale attacks on private property that is owned by the bourgeoisie,we are attacking the state house, we are building mutual aid. with the resources we have expropriated we are changing the narrative. We have experiences social death and now we are experiencing social rebirth.

Now if you have been living under a rock you may wonder: “How did we get here?” that question can be answered quickly. We got here because of George Floyd, Tony McDae, and Breonna Taylor. All 3 black PEOPLE who were murdered by the police. In the case of Tony McDae this shows not just the ongoing injustices faced by black men but also by the injustices faced by black TRANS PEOPLE. Breonna Taylor’s murder shows the injustice faced by BLACK WOMEN everyday. George Floyd’s murder shows that to be black in America means to have your humanity rejected.

the human brain evolved as a pattern recognition machine. we take continuous streams of information as inputs via our senses, filter it for patterns we already recognise, and for variations on those patterns (based on number of shared elements, similar elements, and other patterns), and we also store new patterns. the key is our association ability, as you pointed out. we essentially have a database of known patterns that is continually growing based on our life experiences, and we use that to check against. we also string multiple patterns together.

the reason we recognise a red balloon and a blue balloon as the similar is because we recognise and can identify colours, we also learn that colour can be a property of objects (ie a pattern within a pattern), and we learn and can recognise the shape, smell, texture etc. of balloons. we use this to recognise that the only difference in the two objects is their colour. recognising balloons in different states of inflation works similarly, though some people may benefit more from purely observing one transform into the other, while others may benefit more from performing that transformation themselves.

AI can't do this yet - current models rely on being given specific training data and they do 'learn' by having patterns committed to their memory, but it's a rudimentary learning process and those datasets aren't the same as natural experience accumulated over time. however, it isn't impossible. like most other technologies, iterative improvements over decades brings results.

things that AI does lack imo are having that natural experience outside of lab-fed data, a more robust system of classifying patterns, an ability to better reject false patterns, increased association abilities and questioning abilities, and recognition of partial patterns.

an AI might be a computer program and therefore does what it's programmed to do, but organic life isn't much different. everything from single-cell organisms right up to humans and dolphins and other complex creatures is organically programmed and follows that programming. it so happens that our programming includes taking sensory input and responding based on our current experience (which is updated by that input and our response).

it's not about creating some giant database of every possible thing that could exist (and every possible combination of its various properties). it's about full and partial pattern matching, dynamic association between different items and properties, and building a concept of experience.

if we manage to create a fully sapient computer program, I highly doubt it would go all Big Bad on us like in dystopian scifi. that's fear of the unknown talking.

I also doubt a corporation/government/evil scientist would go to all that trouble in the hopes of their creation unleashing destruction upon humanity or whatever, not when they could create a mindless machine programmed specifically to do that.

we can't know what true AI would do, because the only way to know is to find out and stop projecting our fear onto the idea.

I do think it's important for us to keep trying to trick and break the sorts of AI system and other technologies being put in place by governments, police, militaries and private entities. the primitive systems we currently have are enough to realise our collective fears, like I mentioned earlier. we already live in a cyberpunk dystopia; let's not let it get any worse.

Edd and the gang have committed a bunch of crimes. Off the top of my head these include: Assault and battery (Ex: Dudette Next Door, Breakfast, etc), destruction of private property, and murder/homicide (ex: Halloween Special 2005, Spares, etc. Zombeh episodes don't count as it can be considered self defense in those scenarios).

Tom also has DUI, public intoxication, and domestic terrorism (see Zanta Claws 3 for the last one) under his belt. And that's not even taking into account Matt's attempt to take over the world in the Zombeh Attack Trilogy, or Blaze's mind-controlled rampage in "Season of The Witch".

However despite that, almost none of them have been charged or put under arrest for these crimes.

Matt was arrested one time after the events of Poweredd, but that was all because of a misunderstanding on the part of the cops, who mistook him for Tom in his monster form. So he was only kept in jail for a couple of hours at most.

Even if they were ever to be arrested for their crimes, keeping them contained would be difficult. As Edd has superpowers, Blaze has her magic spells, Tom has his monster form, Matt can become a bat, and Tord is a robot with a variety of weapons at his disposal.

So to all law enforcement that might wanna catch them...good fucking luck.
