I am sad that Back to the Rock decided to just give Mokey rod-hands full time

In the original puppet show, Mokey had two sets of hand that would be used depending on what was needed for a scene.

A set of rod-hands like the rest of the main Fraggle characters, and a set of live-hands (which are like a pair of gloves that a puppeteer wears to act as the character's hands).

Something easily facilitated by her large billowing robe. Though there's various Muppets who do a similar thing even with tight clothing such as Ernie.

Anyways the live-hands is how it was so easy to do scenes of Mokey doing stuff like painting, writing, throwing things, and other stuff in the original series.

If there's an object that either can't be easily attached to a rod-hand, or that needs to be immediately thrown, there's a pretty good chance Mokey is going to be the one to pick it up.

Such as the "hideous round thing" that she picks up and throws to distract Sprocket in episode 1 of the original series. It's too large and smooth to easily (and realistically) have a rod-handed puppet hold, but a live-handed puppet could pick it up and throw it quiet easily.

It could just be because rod-hands have advanced since the original series, and the hands now have greater pose ability than the kind in the 80s, so live-handed puppets have become redundant when not necessary.

Like Mokey doesn't play the piano or anything super intricate that requires extreme finger dexterity that couldn't just be added in post or something.

Though I do think Mokey's live-hands gave her an expressiveness and groundedness in her movements that the rod-handed puppets didn't have in the original series.

Live-hands are more fluid, dynamic and nimble compared to rod-hands just by default.

When she did something, like paint, or touch something, or even touch her friends, with her live-hands it was always more grounded and believable than when any of the characters with rod-hands did something similar.

Like when Mokey pulls out a poem and is holding it, she's literally holding it with real hands, but if Gobo pulls out a postcard from Uncle Matt that same episode it can look kind of funny, because it just doesn't look as realistic. Sometimes they didn't manage to get the fingers on his rod-hand to close all the way, so the letter is just awkwardly stuck to his hand.

Same with the other rod-hand Fraggles whenever they hold a piece of paper.

Human hand in a glove will always be more 'realistic' (believable) feeling in movement and action compared to a fake hand being controlled by a stick.

And I think that is something missing from the new version of Mokey.

Original Mokey was always an artistic dreamer who could sometimes feel like she had her head in the clouds, but also had these moments of being very grounded and insightful, and was very down to earth in general.

Mokey was the most physically affectionate of her friends in the original, and I feel like that was due to, at least in part, her being a live-hand puppet a lot of the time.

Like there are just scenes where she'll just be holding one of her friends hands while she guides them along, or she'll cradle their heads when she hugs them, and there's just an extra layer of depth that comes with it being done by live-hand puppetry.

There were actions that Mokey as a live-handed puppet could do that the rest of the main cast couldn't do due to her status as a live-handed puppet, and the old show took advantage of that, and I feel like that's where at least a bit of her characterization came from.

Because for a lot of those scenes weren't of Mokey doing something complicated that made live-hands neccessary, no, in a lot of them she's just talking with her friends and gesturing with her hands, or being physically affectionate, and what she's doing with her hands aren't even the focus of what's going on in the scene.

In the episode where Wembley is looking for his job, when Mokey is walking him up to the Gorg's garden to get radishes. She's holding hands with him as she leads him up there, but that's barely in frame at all.

To the point that their hands are bobbing in and out of frame as they walk, and it only lasts a few seconds.

The hand holding was completely unnecessary, it barely makes it into the scene at all, but it was still something the puppeteers decided to do, because Mokey holding her friends hand while leading them somewhere was a Mokey kind of thing to do.

And it's the tiny moments like that, that I think is missing from Mokey in Back to the Rock.

Stoned and watching original Fraggle Rock when I clean. Some observations:

1. One episode Red talks about being afraid of death. I’m kind of glad the internet doesn’t know about it because people get so weird about any darkness or real discussion in a kids show. I don’t think kid’s media should completely insulate kids from serious issues. Our media should reflect our reality and our real thoughts, even if it is fantasy or surreal or absurdist or for children.

2. The ecology theme is incredibly well-thought out and fun. Fraggle Rock is a well connected system where changes to one element can throw the system out of wack. The wise and knowledgeable sage is a compost heap, the industrious bug-like dozers that make food for the fraggles.

“Educational” also doesn’t have to mean teaching facts and memorization. The point of Fraggle Rock is to get children to see their world and their connection to it in a different way.

2 B. It puts Doc in a strange place because he can only pass things down from the surface. In one episode, Doc turns off his water while he fixes a pipe, and the Fraggle’s cave and the Gorgs go without water until the Fraggles do a traditional rain dance pipe-banging ritual, the sound which gets Doc to turn back on the water.

Another episode Doc seriously considers taking 100k$ as payment for dumpling industrial runoff in the limestone caves under his property.

3. I accidentally hit the Mudbunny episode/ AIDS allegory. Going to go cry now

last night I had a dream. Warning, my dreams tend to be a bit… weird and surreal and nonsensical, but not the exciting or abstract kind. A more low-key insanity.

I went to Universal Orlando… again (outside of dreams I had gone a few years back). Specifically the Islands of Adventure park.

There was a Fraggle Rock land, of all things.

The land, while it was SUPPOSED to be Fraggle Rock, was actually kind of a big forest. Outside of the rides, I remember much of the experience being walking through the forest, going into some hollowed out trees, and seeing animatronic Fraggles. All the while, the BGM was Mokey singing really relaxing remixes of various songs such as the Fraggle Rock theme. It was quite a vibe, actually.

The one attraction I went on was an outdoor river ride. It was rather slow and chill, with Mokey once again on BGM. But she sang a different song… “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green”, Kermit the Frog’s signature song (aside Rainbow Connection)!!!

The climax of the ride was this kind of split in the river. If you went left, you would apparently see a scene with Boober Fraggle. I went to the right, meaning instead I saw a scene with a giant walkaround animatronic Junior Gorg, and narrowly escaped his clutches by continuing to ride the river through/beneath his legs. I also think I saw… a road or sidewalk at this portion of the ride? Like, right beside me?

At one point Mokey spoke instead of sang, and I distinctly remember the line “On Muppet Island, anything is possible!” 1) Mokey sounded much different from her show counterpart, having a deeper yet much younger sounding voice (like, within tween or teenage range). 2) Muppet Island was the real standout to me, even in dream, since the land was specifically Fraggle themed. I suspected the land might have started out as “Muppet Island” with Fraggle Rock being a subsection and they forgot to update the attraction’s soundtrack.

Have some basic ideas and concepts for my fraggle rock human au, cause I’ve thought a lot about it (i like it :) ) but have yet to write anything down

FIRST OF ALL it’s a college au, cause ive always imagined them to be about that kind of age. They’re all either freshman or sophomores— they’re in the same grade, just either one would work. They’re room assignments are also the same as in the show, with boober having scored a single

As for majors/minors/activies/character roles:

Gobo: majors in anthropology, and minors in music. Wouldn’t be apart of any official band programs, but would be that one guy who carries his guitar everywhere

Red: majors in creative writing and/or media studies. She’s on the hockey team, the swimming team, and does track (at least). Maybe she does percussion for one of the school bands

Mokey: double majors in creative writing and art. Very involved in all the theater companies on campus, and will eventually write a play for one of them to perform. Will hold impromptu jazz jam sessions

Wembley: undecided. His current strategy is to take classes in as many different majors as possible (it’s not really working out). Is in the pit for the marching band

Boober: majors in hospitality and culinary (maybe one of those is a minor?) He helps out with theater sometimes and would definitely get an on campus job in one of the dining halls

Cotterpin: majors in architecture and engineering, minors in art, and would later get a masters in buisness management. Shes also in the marching band pit. She is overworking herself

Wrench: majors in engineering. Im honestly not sure what else hed do :(

Marjory: that one old history professor that everyone loves. Philo and gunge are her teaching assistants

Architect: runs the architecture and engineering programs

Uncle matt: an alum of the school who got somewhat famous and now regularly donates to it. There’s a lot of wings and benches named after him

Other stuff:

Mokey is the only one from the main five that cotterpins not friends with, even though shes the only one cotterpin has classes with. They just never talk

Gobo regularly forces his friends on hikes around campus

Marooned happens when red is trying to distract boober from his surprise party and shoves him in a storage closet. They both get locked in there over night. Boober effectively freaks her out by telling her how easy itd be for them to starve to death in there (they’re fine tho)

That’s most of what i got :) suggestions for doc or the gorgs would be appreciated, ive got very few ideas

I’m attempting again to do some predictions for season 2. The last time I tried this I got too bogged down in the details, this time I’m going to try for broad strokes. I am no longer trying to map songs to episodes, though someone else can try if they dare. 

The series will continue to explore what Gobo’s friendship with Junior looks like. Meanwhile the other fraggles will remain understandably cautious of gorgs.

The video Doc acquired of fraggles interacted will either get deleted or corrupted in some way, she’ll assume some kids are playing a weird prank on her, or like Doc Classic, she will not be able to see fraggles at first. 

Lanford can talk in this season. 

Jamdolin will reveal that in his youth he was very much a worrywart like Boober, and they will bond over it (Fun is Here to Stay)

When Doc sings Free and High, she will not know she’s singing with the fraggles. Maybe Lambert's powerful pipes will resonate throughout the rock and be heard in the workshop, and she’ll find herself singing along…to a song she never heard before. Magic is infectious, after all. She’ll be a little weirded out by this, and be motivated to seek out answers about spontaneously breaking out into song. 

Junior will struggle to make his parents see his point of view about the fraggles. He will make some headway with Ma, when he mentions something he heard Gobo talk about regarding getting advice from the Trash Heap. She will seek this advice herself (Be a Queen)

Just going by song list I can tell it will get heavy in the last few episodes.

Doc will be the sort of ‘main antagonist’ of this season, kind of like Junior’s role in season one. She will do things, albeit unwittingly, to interfere with the delicate the balance of the rock. Conflict will come to a head before Doc and the Fraggles somehow bridge the gap and they become friends. Where Gobo bridged the gap between gorgs and fraggles, it will be up to Red to reach out to Doc (The Hope we Build Together)

As for sorting guest stars…

I mean, obviously Daveed Diggs revives his role as Jamdolin. He’s pretty much a staple of the show. There are also four other new guest stars not assigned roles: Adam Lambert, Brett Goldstien, Adriana DeBose and Catherine O’Hara. There are also four characters we’ve spotted in images.

The redheaded fraggle has spoken in the trailer and her voice is very Catherine O’Hara like. I believe that is her. I also believe she’s more or less a representative of the ‘lost fraggles’, a group of fraggles who got separated from main population way back when. This probably explains her antique looking/renaissance inspired clothes. 

Both the tiny glam fraggle and the big glam monster look like fitting characters for Adam Lambert, but I’m giving it to the purple guy, as his only song is with Wembley and Pogey, not a whole auditorium of people.

Between Brett and Ariana, Ariana seems more fitting for the tiny concert fraggle, and Do the Sashay feels more like a showstopper song than Brett’s 2. Which leaves Brett to be the craggle. He is, I suspect, a fill in character for Lyle, functionally. They probably wanted to tell more craggle stories, but weren’t able to get Ed Helms back for the second season.

My thoughts/headcanons(/a little bit of speculative biology?) for Fraggle Rock

Fraggles (if they even have multiple sexes) seem not to have much sexual dimorphism. While the more masculine presenting Fraggles generally tend to have shorter hair, that’s most likely just an aesthetic choice, rather than something due to their biology, much like humans.

Gender wise, I think they’d have a very Fun Based fluid genders. Neos are a great medium for self expression and can tell you lots about a Fraggle! Pronoun Keeper is a job and boy do the lists get long!

That said, here’s my Specific Headcanons for the main five!

Gobo uses he/him with a handful of mostly Exploration themed neos because that’s what his Uncle Traveling Matt uses. At some point does have a moment of Self Exploration and adds a few more that feel more like just him.

Red uses she/her because those are exciting sounds to her (also because those are the Base Ones Boober Doesn’t use). Also has SO MANY Activity themed pronouns and Fun Sounding ones.

Mokey Only uses Spiritual and Musical Neos.

Boober uses he/him because he’s Used To those and they Feel Safe. (Sidebottom used she/her and SO many Fun neos)

Wembley… Wembled his way into Any being fine but would probably stick to he/him with a small handful of carefully picked neos if Actually Given The Time To Contemplate.

Doozers also do not seem very sexually dimorphic (aside form hair styles), even if there does seem to be some degree of a binary. I also think they’re far too busy with building to be concerned with the concepts of gender. I do think they would have different pronouns based on ranks/roles, such as Students/Workers/Bull Doozers/Architects.

Gorgs, on the other hand have a very strict quaternary system. Not only gender wise but also sex wise.

As young, they’re divided into Princes and Princesses. Once they reach puberty, they’re kicked from their parents territory to find a mate. Only when managing to find a mate, will they turn into Kings and Queens respectively. All four have their own pronouns (at the very least, they do in Grog Language). While not very sexually dimorphic as young, they gain a far more colorful coat, as well as more notable physical changes post-metamorphosis!

Begging for headcannons on phoebe Fraggle I love trope of anxiety ball with ball of energy too plz I need more!!!!!!

Since I haven’t posted anything with this OC yet here’s an update to anyone who doesn’t know who Phoebe is: Phoebe is my Fraggle OC, she’s Boober’s little sister and is basically his mirror opposite

This ask is actually great cuz it gives me a chance to flesh out her character a bit more! 

-So like I mentioned in an older post where I first brought up Phoebe, I picture her as a kid. I’m still deciding an age but I picture her no younger as 6 and no older then 10. I personally like to hc Boober as autistic, and Phoebe is the same. Phoebe is intensely interested in plants and insects, which often limits her ability to make friends with other Fraggles her age. She hops about and shakes her arms when especially excited and (like Boober) has strong reactions to certain odors. Despite her and Boober squabbling a lot thanks to their differing personalities they understand each other’s needs very well

-Phoebe doesn’t have many Fraggle friends her age, so she tries to tag along with Boober and his friends when they go on big adventures. She’s often told to stay home because she’s too little to be doing all the stuff they do - so often she’s left to her own devices to entertain herself. Sometimes this can lead to her unintentionally wondering off without realising, until a panicked Boober starts yelling for her 

-She hasn’t been to the Gorgs garden, she’s banned from going anywhere near there since she’s still a kid, so she loves to listen to Mister Matt’s stories of outer space, or Gobo’s tales from the Gorg’s garden. Though she thinks Mister Matt is cool, she gets annoyed when he too underestimates her because she’s little 

-She eventually does go to ‘outer space’ and meet Lottie, where the two then become best friends. Phoebe continues to visit Lottie as often as she can which sometimes means lying to her brother so she can slip away when he’s not looking. I’ve got a good story idea in mind for how they first meet (Boober and his friends didn’t believe Phoebe when she said she met a ‘silly creature’ - aka a person. And the band thought Lottie’s Fraggle friend was an imaginary friend), and I have been thinking about the idea of Phoebe eventually leaving Fraggle Rock when she’s older to join Lottie on an expedition around the world 

-Phoebe loves swimming! It’s my own personal Headcannon that when Fraggles are babies they float like otters do, until they’re big enough to swim and dive under the water. Phoebe has a tendency to float on water if she stays still, and sometimes she’ll just…float away, as in she’ll go wherever the water takes her. Red is currently teaching her how to swim 

-Out of all of Boober’s friends she’s closest with Red and Wembley the most. Wembley is often hanging around with Boober so Phoebe has gotten used to him popping over to Boober’s cave. She likes Wembley’s funny shirts and giggles when the others have to spin Wembley upside down to stop his wembling. She’ll actively ask to be held upside too. 

And she likes Red because she’s basically like a cool older sister to her, also because Red is teaching her how to swim properly. Red is daring and adventurous, she may also like all the free adoration Phoebe gives her so she lets Phoebe hang out with her when Boober’s busy 

-She likes it when she finds small places to hide, especially if it’s a small tunnel that’ll lead her to another cave. She likes finding secret nooks and crannies that no other Fraggle can reach 

-She’s superstitious. She considers the bow in her hair to be lucky, and will get very distressed if she can’t find it (she also can’t see well if her hair isn’t tied back)

-She prefers cold weather to hot weather 

-She likes to hang by her tail. I think it’d be cool if Fraggles could use their tails to hang/steady themselves on things, sorta like how some animals do. Sometimes when Boober returns home he will be greeted by Phoebe hanging from the top of the cave. She also uses her tail to help with climbing since she’ll wrap it around vines or parts of rock 

-Doesn’t like sour foods

TW: talking abt scars⚠️

What if Wembley and Gobo had similar scars on their backs? W/ Wembley's being thinner bc doozer sticks are kinda sharp & thinner, and Gobo's being more from the explosion (aka burn/wood shard scars)

Context: Wembley got thrown into a doozer construction and got knocked unconscious, Gobo got caught in the expolosion of the Gorg's Castle while saving Fraggle Rock from a bomb

im actually grateful someone else isnt too much of a fan of the new reboot for fraggle rock i didnt grow up with the show but i watched the og first n then going into the reboot it just felt like were watching very flanderized versions of themselves 😭😭😭

i am giving the reboot a chance cuz maybe s2 its like theyll put more depth into the characters but i absolutely hate hate hate how the gorgs and doozers are written it just sucks fraggles are fine but its just like Damn ok

The doozers pissed me off so much. Like I tried watching it with my mom who watched it when it first came out as a kid and we both went ⁉️☹️☹️. They don't even sound right?? Them talking to the fraggles???

Everyone else is praising it but idk the colors also through me off yk. I guess it's to each their own yk. But also a lot of fraggle fans are either starved for content or don't have access to the og series becuase they're all over the place and ya gotta search for them instead of it just being on disney like the rest of the muppet properties.

I'll totally try out season 2, also but I'm going in not excited for much.

Minecraft mod idea:

It’s Fraggle Rock

You choose between being a Gorg, Fraggle, or Doozer

The three are all different sizes

But we also apply chisel and bits so the doozers can do their little dozer jobs (and also for everyone to enjoy messing with)

I always imagined the doozer builds were made of sugar glass, so maybe we combine sugar and water to make it. Though if not using glass works just fine-

There’s added ways to make traps, like using a cage, or a crate, or basket, and some rope, and pullies, etc. like how Junior Gorg does. But again, if not, it’s easy to stick to regular Minecraft traps.

And the doozers have little tiny machines to drive around. And maybe a way to make little hard hats for them to take on and off.

Also would probably be good to make armor invisible, since none of them really wear armor except for the occasional Gorg when startled.

Also nicknames!

((Hello friends I am alive!!! I've just been doing my own thing elsewhere. I've gotten back into Fraggle Rock and I have an oc for it whom I adore and plan on commissioning icons for as soon as I'm able to bc I absolutely plan on roleplaying her at some point.

Anyways Fraggle Rock is an amazing show full of deep messages aimed at kids but it's also the most funny and calming shit I've ever experienced and you better watch it or I'll put Gorg butter on your nose.))
