Epilogue for the Lost - Chapter 3

"Never fear, for I am here!"

That was the cheerful catchphrase of the children's television icon, All Might. When anything bad happened, All Might would arrive and save the day. He always won with a bright beam worn proudly across his face, radiating pure joy not only in the show but for children all over the nation who tuned in to watch him.

But for Toshinori Yagi it was a part of his past that he'd rather move on from. Living in solitude as a wealthy retired actor with only a few friends and family members made it difficult for him to genuinely smile nowadays.

Something he could still not grasp to this day;

He had everything.

Money, fame, properties and adoring fans all around the world.

Yet, his heart felt so hollow. Like somebody had reached in and torn in from his chest, discarding it like the useless piece of flesh it was.

If you asked him, he'd be surprised if he even still had a heart under his paper-thin skin.

During the last few years of his starring role as the smiling superhero, he had been involved in a major car collision that damaged his internal organs beyond repair. After months of surgeries and other frequent visits to the hospital, he had retired due to his declining health.

His adoptive father-figure Sorahiko Torino always made it a habit to visit frequently, though Toshinori himself preferred to stay in isolation. Far, far away from the prying eyes of his stern and no-nonsense father and his constant lectures about bad habits and whatnot.

Though he knew it was deeply childish, Toshinori still felt a rebellious thrill from aggravating Sorahiko just as he had done in his youth.

While Torino had always been known for his grumpy attitude, he took up to eleven after the incident involving his closest friend, Nana Shimura. Like Sorahiko, she had worked as a high-ranking member of the Police Force and had taken a squad to raid the hideout of a dangerous wanted criminal.

The notorious A.F.O killer.

He had been given that name due to the fact that all of his victims had the three initials carved into parts of their bodies.

However, it hadn't gone as planned and the entire building went up in flames. The majority of the squad had escaped with minor injuries, but Nana inhaled far too much smoke during her attempts at fleeing to safety which caused her to fall unconscious. Several hours later, she had passed away in the ER department.

It was a massive shock to everybody. Nobody could have seen it coming.

The criminal's body was never found or recovered, the authorities eventually pegging it down to have burned into nothing during the inferno due to the fact nobody had come forward with grievous burns in any of the hospitals in Japan.

A fitting way to end the life of such a cruel and evil man. Scorched into a smudge on the ground, leaving nothing but joy to the civilians who had feared for their lives during his spree.

While many would call it a horrifying end, Toshinori called it justice.

Losing Nana was truly a tragedy and both Toshinori and Sorahiko suffered badly with mourning the kind woman's death. While Sorahiko took to his study and spent many days and nights alone, Toshinori's behaviour grew more challenging and he had started fighting at school and in public.

He wasn't a bad kid.

He just hadn't known how to deal with his own grief. It made him feel hollow inside, like his heart was devoid of anything.

Nana Shimura was like a secondary parental figure to Toshinori. She would watch movies with him, take him and Torino out for long drives in the city and countryside while always proudly wearing a smile on her face.

The television hero All Might's constant beam was a complete homage to Shimura in every way.

If only she had been around to see him in his hayday…

Would she still be proud of him now?

Knowing how far he'd fallen.

Turning to drinking and not taking care of his health properly… Every time he'd cough up the coppery taste of blood from the back of his throat, he truly felt as if the Grim Reaper himself was slowly approaching, waiting for his final breath before tearing his soul and taking his spirit to the afterlife.

No. What he'd thought about Nana...

That wasn't true.

Nana would have never judged him. Back then and even now.

She was kind-hearted and had so much empathy, especially for somebody who worked in the field that she did. It was something Toshinori truly admired about the woman, other than her fierce passion for her work.

Glancing at the IV cord that was attached to his arm, he let out a deep sigh before heaving himself from his own hospital bed and beginning to hobble out of his private room. A coffee from the café downstairs sounded pretty good right about now…

Whisky would have been better but beggars couldn't be choosers.

Izuku rushed through the hospital entrance, clutching the leather straps of his backpack as his crimson shoes squeaked along the polished floor. He'd been given the brief details of what had happened at his apartment by the police officers after his mother had been taken away in an ambulance.

The kind officers had then given the teen a ride to the hospital where they had accompanied Izuku with getting the name of the ward where his mother had been taken. After giving a quick bow of thanks, Izuku had shot across the car park and towards the building at lightning fast speed.

From the looks of the ward names, it seemed his mother was on one of the higher floors so Izuku decided to take the elevator up; only to almost crash into a tall, blond haired man holding a steaming paper cup who was also waiting for the elevator doors to open.

"I'm so sorry!" the boy yelped, ducking his head while the blond chuckled, fondly shaking his head at the teen. Izuku noted the IV drip and was stricken with more guilt, so much so that he ignored an unpleasant feeling wash over him while being in close range of the stranger.

You nearly knocked a patient over, you complete idiot.

Ding!

As sweet as mercy, the elevator doors opened and the two entered with Izuku allowing the older man to go in first out of respect. It was the least he could do after almost barrelling into him.

"Why thank you, young man," Toshinori smiled, taking a sip of his coffee while watching Izuku fidget around the elevator buttons. He chose to step in, "I'm going to the fifth floor, my boy."

"Ah, that's great, I'm going up to the ninth."

Izuku pressed the buttons and stepped back, feeling the weight of the floor lift underneath his feet. For a few awkward seconds, nobody said a word until a familiar, unwanted chill blew into the boy's face.

He knew it all too well.

They wanted to communicate with him again.

The tiny space of the elevator only did more to trigger an overwhelming feeling of utter claustrophobia, it felt like the silver reflective walls were closing in on him. Izuku suddenly wanted nothing more than to shrink into himself and cower away with his face covered.

Please go away.

Izuku's desperate emeralds met with Toshinori's dull blue, the two immediately connected as the teen bit back a choked gasp that he tried to fight. Foggy imagery immediately began taking over his senses as the familiar raven-haired lady held onto the blond's shoulders like she was embracing him.

No, no, no.

Izuku was seeing them once again, just like all the other times.

Usually he'd see them in short-timed wisps like the smoke of a dead candle flame. A few whispers in his ears and cold spots but nothing as humanoid as what he was seeing now.

He immediately reached for his bag and fumbled around for the zipper, shakily trying to fight against the fabric trapping his zip in the same position. Upon ripping it open, not caring whether or not he'd broken the lining, he began frantically raking through the contents inside.

Where was that damned medication?!

Various whispers combined into one ghostly chorus entered his ears, making them ring like a loud case of tinnitus as he stepped back, trying to compose himself.

"Tell him. Please. Tell him."

"Please," Izuku pleaded as he squirmed, hand darting out and snatching the blond stranger's striped pyjama sleeve. They wouldn't leave until he did what they asked, "She says she's proud. N-never think otherwise."

Toshinori's mind screeched to a complete halt as he whirled around completely on the teen holding onto him, "What?" he spluttered, not quite sure he'd heard what had just come out of the kid's mouth properly. Surely he'd misheard?

"She's proud," Izuku squeezed his eyes shut, as if speaking the words pained him. "Nana says she'll always be proud of you."

Toshinori turned his head around so fast, Izuku's own neck ached at the sight.

Finally, he spoke; "How do you know Nana?"

"I don't," Izuku wavered, glancing at the ghostly hands clutching the thin fabric covering Toshinori's shoulders. "But she said you knows you."

Knows? The older male frowned, unsure of what that even meant.

"Let me rephrase," Toshinori's grip on his IV tightened, a small wave of nausea threatening his weak body as he tried to steady himself. "How could you know something like that?"

The words that had come out of the kid's mouth were enough for him to pray for the doors to open;

"Because she's standing behind you and telling me what to say."

As if by magic, the elevator doors opened and allowed the blond to shuffle out of the small space at the fasted speed he could. In silence, Toshinori dragged his IV along with him while keeping his gaze fixed on the boy.

As the doors began to close, he finally chose to speak again suddenly finding his voice, though it was barely coherent;

"What's your name, kid?"

"Izuku," the greenette answered immediately, "Izuku Midoriya."

"Toshinori Yagi," the blond responded, just as the twin doors shut and cut off their sight of one another.

Toshinori set his cup down and covered his mouth, muffled exhales echoing down the empty corridor as he attempted to compose himself.

Did that really just happen?

"Mum!"

Previous issues with his unwelcome undead buddies immediately dropped the moment he saw her. The teen dropped everything and launched himself forward, sliding to a halt beside his eerily still mother. The heart monitor beeped slowly, duetting with Inko's raspy gasps for air from her oxygen mask.

"Izuku?" Inko croaked, her face ghostly pale as she shakily attempted to lift her head from the pillows supporting her. Izuku immediately grabbed her hand tightly, fearful of letting her go.

"What happened?" he stressed, trying to force down the hard lump in his throat. He couldn't cry in front of her. She needed him to be strong.

"A man," she whispered, gently giving his hand a squeeze, "red eyes. He knew about Mitsuki, said I deserved it."

"Deserved it?" Izuku repeated, dumbfounded. Deserved what? His mother had nothing to do with the Bakugou tragedy…

"He knocked me down a-and did this," she used her free hand to shakily imitate stabbing motions. Her eyes welled up and Izuku fought back his own tears at seeing his mother so broken. "Tried to start a fire in the lounge b-but couldn't, the neighbours heard the commotion and he ran away."

Inko heaved out roughly, each breath sounding painful as she shifted slightly, wincing every now and again while the monitor beeped beside her.

"I'm sorry, Izuku," she whispered, mother and son's eyes meeting before she began closing them slowly. "I'm so sorry."

"Mum?" Izuku released her hand and gave her a few gentle nudges. She moaned softly, streaks of tears lined down her cheeks as her chest slowly rose and fell.

She was alive. Injured but alive.

The teen pushed himself away and slowly made his way out of the ward, feeling like his head was filled with cotton wool. The second the doors to the ward shut behind him, he allowed himself to break down, sobbing quietly against one of the off-white walls of the long and empty hospital corridor.

Who could have done this?

His mother was the most gentle soul he had ever known, rarely raising her voice or getting angry. Why had somebody attacked her?

The mystery person was wrong; his mother didn't deserve what had happened to her.

Izuku thought back to what the police had explained to him, about the attacker. According to the report made, he had mentioned Mitsuki Bakugou. Which was not only confusing but odd too.

Then there was that weird guy with the unusual red eyes back in his neighbourhood, he was wearing a hoodie so his hair was completely concealed. His mother had mentioned red eyes hadn't she?

Izuku only knew one person with that rare eye colour and then there was another thought playing on his mind;

Who truly knew Mitsuki Bakugou besides the Midoriya Family?

My heart started to race and beat out of my chest. Mom wouldn't wake up and I started to panic. I can't lose her, no I can't.

Dad is already gone and mom is all I have left.

Minutes later, I see paramedics run in and one of them tries to pull me away from my mom, but I refuse.

"Honey, we need you to stand back, we need to do our job," one of the paramedics said. I stood away so they can put mom on a gurney and that's when I started to break down.

I had no idea what to do, but one person popped in my mind at the moment.

Jack.

Though my hands were shaking, I managed to take out my phone and call his number. It took about two rings until he finally answered.

"Wow Days, I didn't know you loved me that much to talk to me twice today," Jack said sarcastically.

"J-J-Jack." I couldn't even talk because I was so scared.

"Hey hey Dacey, what's wrong? Are you okay?"

"Mom and I were at the bakery and she collapsed out of nowhere. S-S-She isn't breathing Jack."

I could hear Jack's heavy breathing over the phone. He was scared too which was something I never really seen from Jack.

"Shit, Dacey, I wish I was over there now. I'm so sorry, but I have to go. I got an interview in an hour." Jack said regretfully.

"It's okay Jack, I get it." The paramedics put mom in the ambulance and I got in the back with her.

"I'll call you as soon as I can, okay Dacey? I love you"

"Okay, yeah I love you too," I said as I chocked up at the last part.

The ambulance started to drive off and all I could think of was if my mom was going to make it.

"Mom, please don't leave me, I need you."

I turned off my phone after Dacey called me. I just stood there in shock at what just happened.

Dacey has gone through so much and I don't want her to go through the same situation she had with her dad a few years back.

My interview was in an hour and I had to get ready, but honestly I don't think I can be in front of the cameras after I found out what's happening with my aunt and cousin.

I called my mom downstairs to tell her what happened.

"Mom, come down here!"

My hands were shaking and I didn't know how to say this to her.

" Hey son, whats wrong?" Mom seemed on pick up on how I was shaking.

"Dacey called me and said Aunt Lilah had a heart attack and is now in the hospital."

"Oh my god," was all mom could say.

"Mom I-i'm scared. I'm scared for Dacey and like what if auntie doesn't m-m-make it?"

Mom turned her head towards me and said " Hey Jack, don't say that. She will be okay and we can try to book a flight to Philly so we can be with them."

"Okay mom, thank you. I hope they're okay." I hugged mom tightly not knowing what else to do.

five hours after the incident

I was waiting in the waiting room anxiously as mom was still in the ER.

I told Morgan about the situation and she's been checking in with a few phone calls here and there.

Jack has also been texting me like literally every ten minutes for updates and to make sure I was doing okay.

Literally as I just said that, my phone vibrated.

It was Jack.

I swear it's like I summoned this kid or something.

I smirked lightly at the last text that Jack sent. I put my phone away and took in a deep breath.

You got this Dacey, she will be okay. You have nothing to worry about. I thought to myself.

I tried to relax myself as much as possible. Closing my eyes, I listened to the music that was flowing through my earphones.

I perked my head up as I heard a door open in the waiting room. A doctor who looked to be in the higher rank, came up to me.

I immediately stood up and asked him how my mom was.

"How's my mom?" I asked a little too loudly.

The doctor didn't respond. He just stared at me with eyes I knew all too well.

They were the same eyes my dad's doctor had for me when my dad passed away.

And to make shit worse, this was exactly the same hospital my dad died in after a motor accident. In this exact same hospital.

"Ms. Windsor, I think you should sit down."

Oh god, no this can't be happening.

"No n-no no n-n-no she's fine!"

"Ms. Windsor, I am so sorry to inform you, but your mother has passed away. "

I couldn't think. I swear my heart literally shattered at his words.

"Is there someone we can call for you?" I could tell the doctor was sincere, but I couldn't take it.

I ran out of the hospital and started running who knows where, I just had to get out of there.

I texted Jack and Morgan a text containing only two words.

After I sent that text, I posted a picture on Instagram with me and mom. I shut off my phone knowing that they would blow up my phone calling and texting me.

1. Burn Bright (im sorry but the whole build up into “be afraid of what i am” makes this one of the best songs ever recorded.... i just think its an incredibly reflective and honest song, love the lights motif it drives me Crazy)

2. Tomorrow’s Money (i LOVE this song and not just because i’ve torn it to tiny little pieces and think it has some of the best lyrics on the album but because it is genuinely so Interesting? the vocal effects, the surf rock intro, an amazing ray toro solo?? this song FUCKS)

3. Kiss the Ring (this song is so sexy and sarcastic.... just a nice little romp to tear shit apart to, the end bit leading into the solo is so smooth too)

4. Make Room!!! (i love make room..... its just really fun but Angry and cynical, just like kiss the ring it has a lot of sarcasm that makes it fun to lip-sync to plus gerards vocals have a lot of edge on the track- its good)

5. Boy Division (boy division IS good esp in the lyrics, i simply think it doesn’t quite hit as much too me as it does to other people... i have no real idea why but. i think it takes a while for me to sink into the vibe of the song)

6. The Light Behind Your Eyes (ok. this song is just emotionally devastating and the sheer honesty? the build-up? yeah is it a little overwrought, but when isn't my chem?? that's what makes it hurt the most is how far they’re willing to take an emotion. its not a personal favorite but i can respect the hell out of this song)

7. The World is Ugly (ok. i REALLY like this song. it frequently makes me cry and the vampires callback, however illogical and gimmiky, does GET to me. its not quite dynamic enough to outpace the light behind your eyes but i have the worlds biggest soft spot for this one)

8. Gun. (gets higher than the others on sheer lyrical value alone but the instrumental in this one is Weird. and it gets repetitive toward the end. not a favorite)

9. Surrender the Night (this song is just. kinda forgettable to me? the lyrics are Ok but nothing about this ever stands out. could be better!)

10. Ambulance (another one of my bad opinions - i don’t much care for this song, it fits a particular cliche i don’t like, which is songs about hospitals or ambulances? like generally but also for mcr songs particularly. ALSO this song makes no sense <3)

Keeping their relationship a secret is hard, coming up with excuses for why they haven't taken each other down yet is harder, but of course Madara always finds a way to complicate things that don't need complicating.

Criminal Malpractice

Madara scowled and flinched at the sound of a bullet impacting the concrete wall he and his subordinates were hiding behind. He was getting too old for this shit.

Okay so he wasn’t actually all that old yet, barely creeping up on his mid-thirties, but his poor ears had suffered through more than their fair share of this bullshit. He would find a new line of work if he hadn’t already entrenched himself so deeply in to this lifestyle that the mob might very well fall apart without him. Maybe he should start thinking about training a replacement soon so that he could retire. Obito was showing a lot of promise as he grew in to his later adolescence, he would make a good successor. He was also just crazy enough to enjoy this lifestyle and all the insanity that came with it. Kids these days were wild.

A chunk of something that may have been concrete but also may have been a fragment of skull bone went rocketing passed his face. At the same time one of his men jerked backwards and collapsed to the ground, falling utterly still in a way Madara recognized all too well. His nose wrinkled. Yet another widow to console, another life lost to cover up while he tried to keep his own mourning quiet to help the lower ranks keep up morale. Lately he was running out of ways to make bodies disappear in a manner that wouldn’t lead suspicion back to him or anyone that worked for him and his family. Just because it was common knowledge that the Uchiha family were connected with the mob didn’t mean they should make it easy for the law enforcement to pin them with any actual evidence.

Mistakes like today notwithstanding. If he hadn’t already taken out the cameras in this area it would be very hard to talk his way out of being accused of something here.

Speaking of law enforcement, Madara dared to peek around their cover and count the heads popping up from behind the barricade of police cruisers. He forced his eyes to skip past the head of shining white hair they wanted to catch on and focus instead on the actual bane of his existence. In another world Shimura Danzo would definitely have followed a similar nefarious path as Madara had – although probably with less than half the morals. Madara’s life was filled with illegal acts but he had a code of conduct, okay? He took care of his own and really he was just trying to make this city better. Just because his methods were shady didn’t mean he didn’t care, he simply cared in all the ways that people who followed the law couldn’t.

Unfortunately for the City of Konoha the illustrious Shimura Danzo had instead decided to dedicate his life to being a police officer. At some point he must have had high hopes for what he surely thought would be a shining career. It clearly rankled that he hadn’t made it even to Captain, stuck forever at the rank of Sergeant and taking out the frustration that gave him on the men he led. Serving under a much younger Chief of Police – the youngest their city had ever seen yet also the most competent – had turned him even more bitter. Several times now the man had tried to reach out to the underbelly of the city, determined to turn dirty cop. Madara, however, owned the underbelly of this city and he had a standing order forbidding his people from dealing with the man.

The chaos of a shootout seemed like the perfect opportunity to remove a problem he was more than tired of working around. Across the way he could see Izuna pausing at the sight of his satisfied grin, though his brother only narrowed his eyes in suspicion. It cut to the quick to be so mistrusted by his own kin. Really it did!

“What are you planning?”

“To get rid of a nuisance,” Madara said. In one smooth motion he stood, aimed, and fired then immediately dropped back down hoping no one caught enough of a look at him for a positive identification. Then he looked over to where Izuna was using a small mirror to keep track of the action. “Did I get him?”

“Yup. You definitely shot the Chief of Police.”

“WHAT!?”

Completely disregarding his own safety, Madara jerked around and popped his head out in to the open. Shimura was still standing. A foot or so to his left side Senju Tobirama, the man who had skyrocketed up the ranks since the day he joined the force, was being dragged away to safety while he very calmly attempted to staunch his own bleeding and sent a thunderous scowl toward the mob forces. Their eyes met across the mayhem for a brief moment and Madara swallowed thickly.

“I’m never going to hear the end of this.”

The hours he waited in the empty house that night were some of the longest he had ever spent. Owning the city always felt like less of an accomplishment during the times when he was faced with how little rights he had to his own life partner. Falling in love with a police officer was a terrible idea, he’d known that right from the moment he realized where his heart was headed, but staying with the man and supporting him all the way up to being named Chief of Police was such a spectacularly bad idea he still wondered how neither of their associates had caught wind of it yet.

Having only a select few people who knew where he called home helped with that, as well as his partner’s infamous reclusive tendencies. It did not make the waiting any easier when he knew that Tobirama was spending those hours in a hospital undergoing surgery where Madara was quite unwelcome to go visit. A known mob boss visiting an officer of the law? Yeah, not obvious at all.

Adrenaline rushed through him at the click of the lock on their front door and Madara hurried over to peek down the hall just as the tumbler slid back in to place. Tobirama’s movements were stiff but he was blessedly alone as he slid off his shoes and toed them in to the neat little spot where he always kept them, eyeing the coat hooks then sighing and trudging down the hall without removing the fur trimmed civilian jacket buttoned over what remained of his uniform. When he spotted Madara skulking around the corner he stiffened even further and turned in to the kitchen without a word.

Madara slinked after him like a dog with his tail tucked between his legs. Silence stretched between them as Tobirama went through the motions of drawing a mug of tea one handed and the guilt rose higher and higher in Madara’s throat until he couldn’t take it and blurted out the first thing that came to mind.

“So how was your day at work?”

Obviously he realized how stupid that was the moment he said it. He really didn’t need Tobirama to slam his cup down hard enough to slosh precious Darjeeling in every direction.

“You fucking shot me, that was my day at work!” Shaking out his now scalded fingers, he turned around to return fire with the daggers in his eyes. “I’m out of commission for at least a week, if not several, and what do I have to show for it? Another ‘failed’ attempt to take down the man living in my own home. You are very fucking welcome for covering that abysmal escape, by the way, because I had to cover your ass from a god damned ambulance!”

“I’m sorry, okay!? I was aiming for that Shimura dick head!”

“Well your aim fucking sucks, go ask Kagami for a few lessons on marksmanship before you take my head off next time!”

Madara shuddered. His nephew was a walking ball of sunshine terror, too happy to be natural and too gifted with long range weaponry to be entirely human. No way was he putting himself through another round of cheerful hours on the gun range just to come out even more thankful that he’d somehow managed to keep the kid happy in the role of budding assassin. Unhappy assassins usually came after their boss and he certainly wasn’t looking to have both eyes taken out from three streets away with no evidence.

Tobirama cruelly allowed him to stew in those thoughts while he turned away again and ran cold water to soothe the fingers he had spilled tea all over. Watching him, Madara cringed as he realized he had effectively taken both the poor man’s hands out of commission. He really wasn’t doing so hot today. Some big bad boss he made when he couldn’t even care for his own partner properly.

“Let me,” he offered quietly. Tobirama subsided with a grumble, throwing himself down – gently – at the kitchen table to watch every movement with an eagle eye. It was a little nerve wracking but Madara bore up well enough until the tea was cleaned up and remade, delivered with a shamefully bowed head. While his lover drank the offering Madara tried several times to open his mouth and make his apologies but every time he thought he had the words straight in his head he would look up at Tobirama and everything in his brain would scatter all over again in favor of the heavy guilt weighing him down.

He shot his own lover. He put a bullet in to his own partner’s flesh. What words could possibly make up for that? How could Tobirama ever forgive him when he was quite sure he would never forgive himself?

“Nothing vital got hit, at least.” He jerked in surprise when Tobirama broke the silence first.

“Oh. Good. That’s…I’m sorry.” If any of his subordinates could hear how small his voice was in that moment he had no doubt that they would laugh themselves silly and lose all respect for him. No one would ever fear his retribution again if they knew how far gone he was for the man across the table.

“I’m going to bed.”

“But-!”

“Madara, I am tired. I spent nearly thirteen hours in the hospital because they allowed a first year resident to operate and he was so incompetent they had to open me up again and go back in as soon as he stitched me closed. They wanted me to stay overnight but I assured them that I had a ‘guest’ staying with me who could help and now speculations about my personal life have tripled. My own partner shot me, my officers are chomping at the bit to have you behind bars for it, and I am in so much pain I can hardly think straight.” Pushing his empty mug away, he struggled to his feet with his jaw tightening when the motion tugged on some sensitive areas. “I want nothing more than to let this fucking day end.”

He was tottering out of the kitchen a moment later, leaving Madara glaring at the floor in personal offense that it had not yet opened up and swallowed him whole. If he were as brilliant a man as his beloved then maybe he could turn to evil science, create a time machine, go back to this morning and crack himself around the head for ever pointing a weapon anywhere close to his most precious person.

Since he wasn’t a mad genius he hauled himself out of his own chair and shuffled down towards the bedroom after the other man. He found Tobirama hovering by the end of the bed plucking at the buttons of his jacket and scowling deeply, unable to move one arm and unwilling to fiddle too much now that his other hand was covered in mild burns. Madara inched in to the room until he was spotted and told himself that it was perfectly normal for a grown man to feel so small when faced with such a sharp gaze.

“Want some help?” he offered. Tobirama snorted, dropping his hand and turning his head away moodily.

Having two working hands, Madara made quick work of the buttons and helped to slide the jacket off as gently as possible. With soft-spoken requests for a movement here or a shift there he got Tobirama down to nothing but his skin, at which point he hurried over to fetch a pair of pajama pants from one of the dressers against the eastern wall of their bedroom, scurrying back to kneel down and keep Tobirama steady while the man slid one foot in to each leg. It was hard to resist letting his touches linger like they usually would with so much skin on display and his face right there where it would be only too easy to turn his head and take the man’s length in to his mouth. Fortunately he wasn’t stupid enough to do something like that without warning when the mood in the room was so clearly not headed for such activities.

Although…perhaps he could fix that. They both knew that apologies weren’t his strong suit, his words better suited to barking orders than expressing the feelings trapped in his chest. And they both also knew that he was prone to finding more physical ways to making his feelings known, whether that be doing more than his fair share of the household chores or offering certain bedroom services without asking for reciprocation.

Of course what he had done this time was hardly something he could erase with a hand job or two but there was nothing wrong with trying and doing one thing for his partner didn’t mean he was going to call it a day and forget the whole issue. He was an asshole but he wasn’t completely heartless.

Well, not when it came to Tobirama, at least.

The possibility stayed on his mind all through helping Tobirama brush his teeth and wash his face then pulling the sheets down to tuck the man underneath them and go do all those things for himself as well. By the time he was turning off the lights and sliding under the blankets he was half hard in his pajamas and almost ashamed of how much the idea appealed to him. Not because he was ashamed of his own desires, that ship had sailed more than a decade ago and he certainly had no regrets about where his appetites had taken him, but rather because he was sure it wasn’t an appropriate apology for this sort of situation.

But really, was there ever going to be a proper way to say sorry for shooting his own partner in the chest? Or shoulder. He hadn’t had a chance to take a good look at the wound yet, covered as it was by several layers of gauze. At least that particular wave of guilt could be left until tomorrow when he would of course insist on helping to change the bandages.

Madara squirmed and fretted in the dark bedroom until he nearly leapt out of his own skin when Tobirama was once again the first of them to break the silence.

“Do you know how much paperwork I would have had to do if you did manage to shoot that asshole?”

“You…” All the tension in his body was violently expelled with a hard snort of laughter. “Is that what has you so fucking grumpy?” With a grin of relief he rolled over and fitted himself again the other man’s uninjured side. Tobirama sighed moodily.

“No, I’m grumpy because you shot me. With a bullet. It hurts. And I don’t know what painkillers they gave me but I am so high but I still fucking hurt.”

Madara sniggered. “You don’t seem high to me, if that helps.”

“It doesn’t. The room is spinning. Make it stop.”

“Actually, I had a thought. I was thinking of making it spin even faster – in a different way.” He pressed a kiss to Tobirama’s shoulder but got only a huff for his troubles. Stubborn man, refusing to be seduced even when Madara was clearly being obvious about what he wanted to do.

Lolling his head to one side, Tobirama grumbled, “Faster would not help.”

“Stop being stupid and let me give you an apology blow.”

“Ah. I’m quite sure that’s not a great idea at the moment but I am also not going to stop you so long as you understand that I can’t do much in return.” His lover turned to blink hazily at him and Madara could finally see what he meant about the pain killers. That was not the same sharp gaze he had seen in the kitchen. Something must have finally kicked in. With a laugh he pressed forward to kiss those pouting lips.

“That is entirely the point love. You’re going to be angry at me again in the morning anyway so you might as well enjoy tonight, yes?” Madara waited for the other man to nod in concession of his excellent point before shuffling around and sliding further down the mattress. “Good, then just lay back and let me take care of you.”

He gleefully chuckled over the agreeable hum from his partner. Usually it was a lot easier to fluster Tobirama with blunt sex talk but apparently the influence of whatever drugs they had him on mellowed out certain inhibitions. It was a shame his job kept him strait-laced and prevented them from recreating this again another day because Madara would have loved to see what kind of filthy things he could talk his way in to like this.

“Right.” Nodding to himself Madara set about righting both of their clothes and found something to wipe his hand on, snagging a bottle of water from inside the nightstand to rinse out his mouth as well.

Then he crawled up the mattress to lay himself carefully at Tobirama’s side and pulled the blankets up over both of them. He made sure they were all perfectly even and straight, just how his partner liked them, then pressed a kiss against the man’s good shoulder and curled up against him as much as he could without having to worry about jostling the injuries he had caused.

“I’ll cook you breakfast in bed tomorrow,” he promised in a whisper. “And I’ll fetch anything you want around the house. And I’ll even do my best to hold my temper when you inevitably get irritated that you can’t do anything for yourself; we both know you will, don’t deny it.” Despite his words he paused, waiting for the expected denial because Tobirama had a very selective memory when it came to his own temper, but it never came. Curious, Madara lifted his head and peek around to see what was holding his tongue.

Fast asleep. Whatever drugs they had given him were finally doing their job, pulling him down in to dreamland where the pain couldn’t touch him. As much as Madara loved having his partner’s attention he was glad that he would spend the night comfortably and find good rest.

Tomorrow he would spend the day waiting on his partner’s every beck and call. And the next day he was calling Izuna to schedule a council of the Family. Some things in this city had needed changing for a long time and while he was certainly the right man for the job he was not willing to risk the only person who had ever loved him as completely as Tobirama did. Which meant that they would need to change some things about how they themselves operated as well. First he would help his beloved feel better. Then he could go out and make the world better as he’d always intended.

By force if necessary. A smirk tilted the corners of his lips and he looked over at his sleeping partner. He always had preferred to act first and apologize later; at least with some things he rather enjoyed the apology.

Policing Memories of

Part III

The days at Warren passed very quickly. We found a one room apartment in Rudi Laframboise Apartment building at the corner of Stanhope St. and Balfour St. in Warren. My family moved down within the first month. At that time we were expected to live in our Detachment Area. I was never sorry about that as we enjoyed our time there and felt much at home. The people treated us with respect and it was not long until we were part of the community. I was in uniform by this time and I will never forget the first night my wife seen me load my revolver before going to work. I have always been a hunter and trapper, and had many firearms at the house, but I think she realized this was different. It sure showed on her face. Thank goodness she was able to get by that.

I remember the first traffic ticket I issued, it was for unnecessary noise. I was patrolling alone through the village of Warren. A young fellow was sitting in his car on Rutland St., it was about 11:00 at night, he spotted the new fellow (me) and thought he would have some fun. He started pushing the accelerator to the mat. It sounded like the pistons were going to jump right out of the motor. I shook my finger at him, then; circled the block. He continued roaring his motor. I stopped got the necessary information from him and issued the ticket. The following years I had many run-ins with that same young man. He never lost his recklessness. He passed a number of years later in a farm accident. That was one sad thing that I seen happen time and again. We would know which of the young people we would most likely find in a fatal accident of some kind. It was sad because we would talk to them and they were not really bad kids as such. They would not listen. They were just wild and reckless. The times were different than today. Back then if you passed by some young fellows who used foul language at you, you stopped the car, gave them the side of your foot in the butt then took them home to Dad and he gave them another one.

I have attached a photograph of a second world war stretcher. It was identical to one we had at the Detachment. It seemed like it weighted about 50 lbs. the body was made of canvas, it had very short little legs on it. The two carrying poles that ran through the length of it were made of hardwood. It had two iron hinges that allowed you to fold it together. I often thought of how many stories that old stretcher could tell. We used it on rescues, deaths and various injuries. In the early years it took over an hour to get an ambulance. When we received a rescue call we often would ask them to dispatch the ambulance to where we could meet them with the person.

One of the first times I can remember using that stretcher was a call Dick Wood and I received. A chap from Sudbury who worked for the city had taken a heart attack while fishing for speckled trout on a stream north of Warren. We had the ambulance dispatched to the closest road, grabbed the stretcher and headed out. We located the man lying on the stream bank about a mile off the road. He was a stocky man and was conscious. We put him on the stretcher and started out. It was a very warm day and it was not long until we had to take one of many breaks. I think we were both covered in sweat. The patient kept wanting to get up and walk. We assured him we were all right and continued out of the bush. We just arrived at the road as the ambulance arrived. Dick and I headed back to Warren for a needed break. The next morning we found out the victim had made it to the hospital all right but had died a short time later. We both felt pretty low that our efforts had been in vain. It was not long until we had regained our composer and were looking for the next assignment.

PTSD

My thought on PTSD and the recent run on suicides within the OPP. Many police officers develop a weird since of humor and people outside the force think that it is wrong. That they are in need of physiatric help. I beg to differ. As police officers we deal with some pretty horrid things. We see what the ordinary person does not, eg: hangings, decapitations, dismemberments, murders. We do our best to see humor in everything and make jokes of the unthinkable. If we allowed ourselves to be serious when dealing with many of these things it would drive many of us over the edge. We must not think that a victim could be our child, or some other loved one. We cannot compare. (That boy could be my son or girl could be my daughter.) At the same time we find ourselves in various situations such as telling a person their loved one has died. That they will not be coming home anymore. I found in these situations I would take off my shield and grieve with them. In many cases I would shed a few tears. We are not invincible, but we have to find a way to cope. Humor helps. The other thing a police officer has to do is make quick life effecting decisions. We must make a decision in split seconds that some judge or judges will analyze for the next 20 years. I got so I would tell myself when dealing with a deceased that their soul was gone, this is just a piece of meat. I would show them respect, but they were gone.

The force has recently had a large number of members committing suicide. They have set up groups and people that one can go to when they realize they need help. The big problem with this is that police officers feel that it is a sign of weakness to seek any kind of physiatric help. The easy route when they find themselves in this situation of extreme depression is to bite the bullet. As a young officer I did not recognize depression when I seen it in my fellow officers. I did not recognize it until it had bloomed and they were past my help.

My personal opinion is that they should train all front line members, so they know and recognize depression. The person withdrawing, lack of humor, staring into space, anger for no reason. Etc. In many cases a good listener helps the person find his own answers. A good friend can help the person realize that the brave thing is to get help if necessary. The second thing I believe would help is to have a debriefing session with all those involved following a traumatic event. People involved can share their feelings and make each other feel that they are not alone in their thoughts.

I also differ on the thought of suicide. I don’t think a person is necessarily sick if he or she thinks of suicide. It is a sign to them that they better start talking to someone. A colleague or friend; who has seen or experienced the same thing that they are dealing with, a person who will listen to their concerns. A good example of what I am trying to say is the soldiers from the second and first world had PTSD but in far fewer numbers than our recent members who returned from Afghanistan. I think the reason was simply the difference in the time they returned into civilian life. The first and second world war survivors returned in troop ships. They were kept together for weeks following the hostilities. They had time to debrief and realize the horrid things they had taken part in were shared by all, they were not alone. The troops returning from Afghanistan although far less in numbers had a higher incident of PTSD because the were home in a matter of hours and back with their love ones before they had time to debrief.

Humor

The first six months on the job I only had on the job training. At that time I knew that to receive permanent status I would have to receive a recommendation from my supervisor (Dick Wood), and then write a senior constables exam. I kept looking for some feed back from Dick and he would just smile and put me off. One night I remember we were patrolling the hamlet of Hagar when a person ran over to our cruiser and advised there was a big fight going on in the Esso Restaurant. We drove over there and stopped. I jumped out of the car and ran into the restaurant. As I came through the door I could see three different fights going on down the length of the long counter. I continued running hitting the first two fighters and knocking one each way. I did the same with the second two as I moved down the length of the long bar type counter. One of these fellows grabbed my clothing. I twirled around intent on breaking his hold with a chop with the side of my hand. He moved and as I swung the tips of my fingernails touched the side of his neck, Opening up a fairly deep cut. He let go and I continued moving down to the last two and separated them. I looked back and Dick was just coming through the door. The fighting was all over and I got a towel from one of the waitresses and stopped the bleeding on the fellows’ neck. When it was all over; I asked Dick how come he took so long to come in. His reply was: I heard you were chicken and just wanted to see what you would do. Again the big grin. No other comment.

One night while attempting to remove a stalled car from the roadway onto the shoulder of Hwy. 17, a pedestrian was struck by another car and killed. Both Dick and I were within inches of being struck too. When we had completed our investigation, we received instructions to report to Inspector Jim McBain and Staff Sergeant Sam Whitehouse in Sudbury. They wished to be made aware of just what had happened and what our involvement was. These were the two highest ranking members in District 13. We appeared as instructed and were marched into their office. McBain immediately asked: Wood what happened out there? Without blinking an eye Wood said: Crawford pushed a guy in front of a car. McBain turned to me and said: What the hell did you do that for? My mouth fell open and I think I stopped breathing. We then proceeded to tell the truth of what had happened. It took me a little while to realize why Dick had done that. I then realized that you can’t always dwell on the seriousness of what you see, hear, and experience. It is just too traumatic. We arrived home that night in the wee hours of the morning. I crawled into bed with my wife and went sound asleep. For the most part I was able to do that the rest of my career, no matter what happened. I had many a practical joke pulled on me over the years that followed and pulled many on others. That since of humor has stayed with me to this day.

At the end of my six months probation I received the necessary recommendation from Dick then wrote the exam without any problems.

Three teenagers stabbed in separate knife attacks over three hours

Three men were stabbed in the space of three hours last night in the latest spate of bloodshed to rock the country.

A 19-year-old was stabbed in north London around 9.30pm moments before an 18-year-old was attacked in pub toilets in Liverpool, and a 16-year-old was knifed on a street near Bolton, Greater Manchester.

The teenager attacked in London is fighting for his life in hospital, while the other two are reported to be in a stable condition.

A road closure remains in place this morning while officers continue to search for clues. No arrests have been made.

A MET police spokesman said: ‘Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a man, believed to be aged 19, suffering from a stab wound.

‘He received treatment at the scene before being taken to a central London hospital where his condition remains life-threatening.

‘No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue and a crime scene remains in place.’

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Moments later an 18-year-old was attacked in the pub toilets in Liverpool, where he suffered injuries to the buttocks and abdomen.

Witnesses said he stumbled out of the Sefton Arms on Mill Lane, and lay on the floor in a pool of blood while witnesses desperately tried to give him first aid.

Officers were called to the scene at 9.37pm and the victim was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition but is refusing to co-operate with the investigation.

There have been no arrests at this stage.

A witness said: ‘The lad was lying on the floor by the taxi rank and people were standing all around him.

‘They were holding something onto his chest to stop the blood, that must have been where he was stabbed.’

Detective Inspector Sue Hinds from Merseyside police said: ‘We believe this assault actually occurred in the toilets of the Sefton public house.

‘The victim is refusing to co-operate with police, but that won’t stop us from carrying out a thorough investigation into the assault which is a stark reminder of the serious harm that knives can cause in our communities.

‘We need to ensure that those people who carry and use knives get the message that their actions will not, and cannot be tolerated.

‘I would appeal to anyone who was in the pub at the time, who witnessed anything, or has any information to contact us.

‘If you have any information at all about this assault, or were passing nearby in a car at about 9pm and have dashcam footage, your account or evidence could be absolutely vital in our investigation, so come forward and we will do the rest.’

Just over two hours later a 16-year-old was knifed on a street near Bolton, Greater Manchester.

Police were called at 11.50pm to Harrowby Street, Farnworth, and he was rushed to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and will be questioned by detectives today.

Appealing for witnesses, Detective Sergeant Craig Wallace, from Greater Manchester police said: ‘This is a nasty attack which has left a teenager in hospital and we are doing all that we can to piece together the circumstances of the incident and provide him and his family with the answers they deserve.

‘I appreciate that this may cause concern in the local community and I would stress that whilst we believe this to be an isolated incident, there will be a higher police presence in the area over the coming days for anyone who has any questions.

‘We are also aware that people may have taken videos around the time of the incident on their mobile phones and we would ask these people to please pass these on and assist our inquiries.’
