A "kill Jedi on sight" command would be a red flag on principle, but beyond that, it makes no sense for the Jedi to know of it (and it's pretty much impossible for all the MILLIONS of clones to know of it and the Jedi not to know) and not be against it, the Jedi always try to avoid killing as much as they can preferring to take people alive and such, they would definitely be horrified at the idea of an execution in the spot of one of their own, even if a Jedi did betray them

Oh, and the reason people give for why all of the clones comply with the order is silly too

It's always some variation of "they were trained to follow orders"

And how is that different from mind control/brainwashing/conditioning?

And lastly, I'll say this

Just because there was mind control doesn't mean there's no nuance

Aside from the trauma the clones may experience from having their minds hijacked, there's all manner of responses they may have

Some might try to cope by ignoring it

Some might not even realize something happened, genuinely believing order 66 was their own choice

And maybe the chips don't actually cause true mind control per say, maybe they just make sure the clones can't disobey, compelling those who resist to follow orders, with those who chose to follow orders being unaffected

Okay so I am back to reading Star Wars books, and I have JUST started Shatterpoint and I already know this books is gonna be great because..

He’s overthinking and stressing over that decision and why he made it

And what is one of the reasons he couldn’t bring himself to kill Dooku?

Because they were friends

Because he LOVED HIM

Yeah. You read that correctly. Mace Windu loved Count Dooku. His words. Not mine. He used the word love. They were friends before Dooku left the order and Windu admits it to himself that he could not let him go, could not separate the jedi he knew with the man in front of him.

That’s right. Mace Windu. The man whom so many fans believe is a cold and unfeeling asshole.

That man, believes that he potentially allowed his love for the Dooku that was his friend stop him from killing him.

He thinks he might’ve

allowed his emotions to cloud his judgement

and cannot get over that feeling of regret.

And that is so goddamn important to me.

And a guide: -In no way these are my recommendations, I actually unrecommend a certain book here, my recommendations list can be found here. this one is the Wookiepedia list just less confusing (I hope) -She isn't a main character in all of these. And some are just cameos, I didn't get into specifics about that. -Most of the canon books & short stories can be found in e-book/digital form, or in physical copies pretty easily, just look them up. -The same thing that goes for the canon books goes for the canon comics, although most of the issues listed are part of a series (as might be evident by their numbers). That doesn't mean you need to read the rest, because they're pretty stand-alone and usually just reference the other issues of the series/have a framing story related to that. -I'm not sure where you can find the Star Wars Insider issue or the Adventures Ashcan, sorry about that. -The Legends list is much more complicated than canon, since anything related to The Clone Wars series may contradict the prior Legends media. Listen it's a month into the clone wars and obi wan is buying Cody the good stuff(nice coffee), the council setting the clones up with jedi library access and signing them up for classes (college degrees for everyone), they're codifying their culture(they have records of everyones cultures. The clones are no different) , and teaching them that they are safe to be actual people.

I was reading the Attack of the Clone's script for *research* purposes, and it's been a while since I've seen the full movie but:

OBI-WAN: You look tired. ANAKIN: I don't sleep well, anymore. OBI-WAN: Because of your mother? ANAKIN: I don't know why I keep dreaming About her now. I haven't seen her since I was little. OBI-WAN: Dreams pass in time. ANAKIN: I'd rather dream of Padmé. Just Being around her again is... intoxicating. OBI-WAN: Mind your thoughts, Anakin, they betray you. You've made a commitment to the Jedi order... a commitment not easily broken... and don't forget she's a politician. They're not to be trusted.

Literally I will never be able to take the "Obi-Wan is so mean he didn't let Anakin go find his mother" argument seriously ever again. On a purely factual level, there's not a single indication Anakin told Obi-Wan his dreams showed him his mother was in danger or that he thought they were dreams from the Force. Anakin says himself that he doesn't know why he's dreaming of her, which makes Obiwan's "Dreams pass in time," so incredibly reasonable.

Wait wait wait let me update the language to the *pretentious voice* modern parlance. It'll be like a Shakespere "translation." Here we go:

Obi-Wan: you look tired Anakin: I haven't been sleeping well Obi-Wan: Cuz of your dreams? Anakin: Yeah I've been randomly having dreams about my mom all of a sudden. Obi-Wan: They'll probably go away if you wait a bit. Brains are weird like that sometimes. …

The only evidence Obi-Wan might have to the danger point is that the dreams are disrupting Anakin's sleep. But Obiwan is the one to bring up the dreams, in context of them disrupting Anakin's sleep. If Anakin was looking for an opening, that was it.

But way more importantly to me currently is the fact that Anakin transitions out of talking about his mother by going "I'd rather dream of Padmé. Just Being around her again is... intoxicating."

Wtf anakin??? Who says that??? Let alone to their brother-dad???

He seriously goes from talking about his dreams of his mother to how his crush that he's known for a couple days total at this point is really hot, and people expect me to believe that Obi-Wan was supposed to divine from this conversation that they needed to immediately run halfway across the galaxy to prevent imminent disaster?????

Let me continue my translation:

Jedi culture & community fics, my beloved! They're a bit of a rare breed for what you're specifically looking for, specifically focusing on positive Jedi worldbuilding, so if anyone has genfic recs outside of the ones I know, please feel free to add them! But these should help scratch that itch for you, each of them has at least some focus on Jedi philosophy or how Jedi interact with each other or the lessons they teach! What more could the Jedi have done?

I think a lot of the discourse about the "Jedi being slavers" comes from a deliberately uncharitable and bad faith reading of them.

I agree with you that TCW raises these questions and chooses not to go through with addressing them because it is ultimately a kids show that isn't trying to tell a story about the clones' situation but about [the Clone War itself].

But whenever I see people choose to go into these deeper ethical debates, they almost always assign an unfairly disproportionate amount of blame onto the Jedi who are, for the most part, in the same boat as the clones. Even the clones themselves seem to understand the nuance of the situation and most are grateful to the Jedi for coming in and leading them.

Although, yes, the clones do have it much, much worse, the Jedi are still there, fighting, protecting and dying right alongside them.

The Jedi are blamed for being part of the Republic in spite of all its issues, far more than the Senate is for being the Republic, even though the Senate is the one with all the power.

I wonder what it is people wanted the Jedi to even do for the clones...

OPTION 1: Leave the Republic?

And let the Separatists (whose originally legitimate grievances have been hijacked by the Sith) freely commit mass atrocities and enslave other planets with their humongous droid army?

OPTION 2: Overthrow the Republic?

And then what?

Take control of the Senate and become literal dictators and the very things they sought to destroy?

And during this whole takeover process, does the Separatist army just magically pause committing its mass atrocities?

So in the middle of a galactic war, the Jedi, with their limited numbers and resources, decide to start another one against the Republic to free the clones and ignore all the other planets getting destroyed and enslaved, and then...? [Also] the Republic citizens were largely unwilling to fight their own battles and preferred to leave all the fighting to the Jedi and the clones. So, now:

Do [the Jedi] force their new "Republic" to make its own army to fight the Separatists? Do they enforce a draft on the "natborns"?

All of this ⬆️ is premised on the Jedi even being willing to throw away their democratic values, and on the clones even WANTING THEM TO DO SO. Yes the clones are in a terrible situation, but the harsh truth is that, canonically, they do share the same values as the Jedi.

People can argue that they're brainwashed into this, and I would even agree. But that doesn't make it any less true that these are still their values. Most of them want to fight for the Republic.

They should have the choice available to pursue another path if they wanted, but the show - and thus the clones and the Jedi - barely have the time to consider all these issues because they are in the middle of a war.

In the show, [the clones] are the conveniently available highly-trained army that the Republic was going to use with or without the Jedi because it was all a trap set by a Sith Lord.

The Jedi, who were supposed to be some hybrid of social workers, peace-keepers and diplomats, were drafted into a war they did not want, and did not fight [the draft] because they had made an oath to the Republic, and because the alternative was letting billions get killed.

They were between a rock and a hard place and chose to prioritize trying to end the immediate war first before fighting for the rights of the clone army (which - again - is not even their job! Padme, Mon Mothma and Bail and all the other politicians are RIGHT THERE!)

The Jedi were a minority religious order whose own situation in the Republic was precarious, as evidenced by the fact that the citizens were willing to cheerlead their genocide just a couple of years in and gleefully bought into anti-Jedi propaganda en masse.

A more charitable reading of the Jedi would take all this ⬆️ context into account before declaring them slavers/slavery-enablers and surmise that... no, they did not agree with how the Republic was treating the clone army.

They were most likely hoping the Senate would enact a democratic solution to this after the war, so they tried to end the war as quickly as they could.

And no, they didn't "selfishly decide to overthrow/kill Palps just because they found out the Chancellor was their religious enemy when they were unwilling to do so for the clones."

It was because they realised that - all this time - they had all been under the control of a Sith Lord who had orchestrated a sham war to destroy them and take power for himself.

to me this is one of the most important passages of the revenge of the sith novelization, as it contains a fundamental thesis of the prequels. the clone wars were designed to kill jedi. sidious put the order in checkmate before they'd even begun fighting. he used their compassion and trust against them by leveraging their sense of duty to push them into fighting a morally dubious war to protect innocent lives, tarnishing their galactic reputation. he gave them friends in the clones that were crafted to become their assassins. he spread the jedi out, thinned their numbers in years of brutal combat, and then when they were sufficiently weak, wiped them out.

the revenge of the sith required so much planning and moving from the shadows over decades to arrange the galaxy into a trap. the prequel jedi did not have the knowledge that we the audience have, they were operating out of a place of partial understanding and with the best of intentions. to hold them to a standard of omniscience and omnipotence instead of appreciating the genius and patience of the sith is unfair and missing the point. they're not perfect, but they are good. it is tragic that being good is not always enough, it is tragic to know that our best of intentions can come up short. it is tragic that evil can gain power and harm the innocent without repercussions.

this book is heartbreaking on a personal level, but also on a political and ideological one. it reflects the very real world when greed and fear hold sway over a population, where exploitation and oppression win. the jedi are slain and it is brutal to read, and a generation afterward struggling in the dark without them. however, star wars ultimately carries a message of hope: you can kill jedi, but you cannot kill compassion and community. wherever people love each other, there is light. the empire fell and the jedi returned because you cannot kill their ideas. so there is hope, but that doesn't change that it is an egregious crime in the prequels that they were slaughtered.

i think ur right in a lot of ways, but i think the draw of the ‘no attachments’ line translating to a strict no love/no relationships rule reading is

a) a subversion; a fairly straightforward one that leans on relatable tropes (religious faction using hippie language to couch emotionally controlling cult shit is a thing people impose upon the text based on Real World Happenings tm) which in turn

a.1) spices up an, as you said, very cut and dry narrative. when star wars came out, nobody needed anything more than that simple color coding; the status of good and bad was not a question. nowadays, moral grey areas are in favor. tv governments who once fought on the side of the good and just Order against dreaded Kaos are now culpable for all the shady shit modern audiences know irl governments will do to get their way, because audiences of today will not take Order=good at face value (what constitutes Order? is Order even a natural, preferred state of the universe? preferred by whom? etc.) again i think a lot of animosity towards prequel-era jedi is (occasionally justified) fear/loathing of religious sects who exert a lot of control over their communities. i see a Lot less hate for like. og luke’s kinda loose interpretation of the jedi way (we don’t talk about the sequels and the Sacred Texts ok)

b) the emotional connections between the major jedi (particularly the qui gon ‘line’) are fucking messy. obviously this is like. The Worst Example of all of them, but they’re also our main characters for the whole prequel series, and a lot of side content (clone wars animated, etc) I’m not going to touch obi and qui gon rn, but just look at obi and anakin! even with a full support group (albeit, in the middle of a war, but Still) nobody seems to realize that just telling anakin to Let Go will not actually help him process his feelings in a way that’s meaningful to him, esp bc he hasn’t been raised from birth to be a jedi. Normal people need like. actual therapy, guys, sorry.

b.1) The greater majority of jedi KNOW this too. It’s mentioned again and again; anakin was taken too late, is too headstrong, and is not good jedi material. but he’s soooo powerful and special! they Have to train him! if he’s not a jedi he might be Bad! because the only way to definitely not be Bad is to be a Jedi which is Good. Obviously. In favor of this, they seem to accept when he just represses his issues, like ‘ok close enough!’ and so it doesn’t matter if the ‘no attachment’ line actually means ‘no attachments’ in the rulebook, because the way it’s being interpreted by anakin, the way the order is Allowing him to interpret it, it means he can’t talk about anything he feels for fear of being dismissed unhelpfully or told he shouldn’t be having issues with that stuff Anyway. And he’s not the only one who ends up with this issue in canon either, is the thing. Half the sith, ashoka…a lot of them defect because they feel like they don’t have the support in the jedi code to feel badly about…a lot of things, not just attachment, and the jedi don’t seem to have an answer beyond banishing them when they break and cross a line.

c) back to that bit about audiences today not really willing to leave things black-and-white. the prequel jedi order was, canonically, getting kinda weird with it. There’s a lot of stuff you could pick on them for, but the most obvious fan favorite is the use and treatment of the clones. (which, in part, can be justified by their lack of attachment in favor of The Greater Good!) Some of that shit is not shit Purely Good Guys do, and if they’re not Purely Good, though they make a point to insist they are, what else about them…might not be Good? What else got twisted with good intentions? any group that’s trying to sell you a black-and-white viewpoint in the real world is a dangerous one. it’s that easy, really.

This is where a lot of middle ground people stand i think (at least in my experience, and also imo lol). It’s not ‘jedi are evil and won’t let u have a partner!’ that’s like baby’s first media analysis. it’s, jedi code is probably fine actually, the clone wars era jedi order was, canonically, getting kinda cultish and powerful (esp compared to looser systems like the earlier ‘grey jedi’ from the extended lore and luke’s later interpretation in the original trilogy) and they did a bad job of teaching someone who wasn’t indoctrinated at birth their ideals and didn’t want to admit it, and this specific catastrophic incident (anakin) then seems to be indicative of a larger issue rising within their community. looking at the events of some of the extended universe/series, the jedi order’s collapse seems almost as inevitable as the sith empire’s collapse, we just happen to get front row seats to the absolute Spectacle that is the anakin skywalker supervolcano right at the end instead of some background fade into obscurity

…which Was how it was presented in the original series! hence why there’s not a lot of ‘maybe the jedi were Secretly Bad’ focused on that era. in my experience. they don’t give you a lot to work with until later

TL;DR I think you’re right for reading the intent of the original series, but audiences today don’t like being told not to question what’s Good and what’s Bad, and i Definitely don’t think it’s the intent of the extended lore (clone wars era stuff Especially!!) to present things so simply.

like we're talking about a story that has literally color coded its characters to make it glaringly obvious who the good guys and bad guys are. blue/green = good; red = bad. subtlety isn't necessary in a story that has a LIGHT and DARK side. if the jedi were barred from/disapproved of love, wouldn't they just say it...

like the jedi philosophy is just:

attachment = no

letting go = yes

letting go =/= ignoring and repressing, it literally means to Not Be Attached
