The Kiss by awarrington - TOS - there are some super dated things in this fic (it was originally written in 1994) but this is one of the best i've read dealing with jim coming to terms with his bisexuality and attraction to spock. def don't read if you can't or don't want to take it in context of its time. if you can/have the emotional bandwidth to, then it's well worth it

On the Arrow by Fic_me_senseless - AOS - post-into darkness, heavy read, so much longing, and pain, and it makes you ache in the best way

LET'S TALK ABOUT SYLVIE💕, INTERSECTIONAL FEMINISM (SYLVIE & LOKI)✊🏽, AND QUEER REPRESENTATION (LOKIUS)🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️!

SYLVIE

I'm rooting for Lokius, AND I also love how much Sylvie has forged a life for herself in S2. A lot of her development is implied, so I think it's worth looking at her growth outside the context of Loki himself: She found a job, locals know her by name, she has friends and acquaintances, she has hobbies!

People call her by name in her timeline on 4 occasions:

1. When the McDonald's shift manager (John) checks in on her after work. See the kid with the tie in the image below. I couldn't find any gifs of him visiting Sylvie at her truck. She asked him if his mom was gonna pick him up to make sure he was gonna be okay late at night. 🥹

2. When a customer picks up their McDonald's order and thanks her (cheerfully). Also note how many employee stars she had on her badge! Queen.

3. Lyle at the record store. They seem like really good friends, and I got the "beginnings of an attraction" vibe between the two of them. Unfortunately, the gifs below are the only ones I could find of him and I'm still searching for the source. His interaction with Sylvie before spaghetti-trauma was so sincere. He could tell she was down and offered her Velvet Underground. Come on, that's a solid move.

4. Eric at the bar, who comments 2 shots of bourbon is a good choice. Let me tell you, finding a gif of Eric was like finding a needle in a haystack, but here he is leaning close to Sylvie. Thank you, @zehiiro!

I tried to find more gifs of all the people Sylvie has in her life but couldn't find any, which is a darn shame because there are so many subtle cues she's built a support system on her own and she's thriving.

She's a regular at many places in her timeline, and when people greet her, they do so with a smile. She loves music, a hard drink, and punk fashion.

When she engages with Loki, she may come across as cold, but I honestly think she's being firm with her boundaries and true to her beliefs. The TVA threatened her life for centuries. I don't doubt setting foot in the building is traumatic for her, which may explain why she was more harsh than usually in S2E4. Her psychological defenses were all on overdrive. Yet when Sylvie's in her own timeline, far away from the TVA, she can be her real self. Turns out, her real self is pretty well-liked! (I'll talk about how this is mirrored in Loki soon).

INTERSECTIONAL FEMINISM

Sylvie's an unapologetically "selfish" woman who knows what she wants, wants it on her own, is doing it on her own, and isn't afraid to put her foot down when it comes to her personal boundaries. We should be applauding all of that!

This is exactly the kind of female representation we need, but the show did Sylvie a disservice in S1 by coming at her character as a love interest first (look at all the media promos classifying her as such) instead of more thoughtfully showing how badly she has been affected by the TVA and planting what her desires are throughout. If they had done this with more intention and finesse, her position in S2 wouldn't come off as completely irresponsible.

As a result of this apparent marketing and pre-production development decision, her perception as a character (by both lokius and sylki shippers) is muddled by the question of her relationship status with Loki. This truly isn't fair, most especially to Sophia Di Martino.

Of course, Sylvie isn't perfect. No well-written character should be. I just think she's cooler than she gets credit for precisely because her character arc doesn't require the fulfillment of a romance. She will be fine whether or not she ends up with Loki. It's very feminist!

Loki, in turn, found safety, belonging, and love at the TVA. All the things that are the complete opposite of Sylvie's lived experience. I often see fans complaining about how Loki is ooc in his own series.

The thing is, and Loki admits this himself: it's all part of an illusion.

This illusion started far before the first Thor movie. He comes from a hyper-masculine (dare I say toxic-masculine) warrior society. His true nature doesn't conform with this, so he has to overcompensate with some (genuinely awesome) bad assery.

BUT he doesn't like it.

As a comparison to a far lesser but more relatable degree: imagine putting on a customer service persona 24/7. UGH. It's just not sustainable without becoming increasingly angry and bitter, which is what Sacred Timeline Loki becomes. Mobius gets ahead of this.

In the series, Loki can finally TURN OFF that persona, and TURN IT ON again when it's needed (and fun!).

He also now has the freedom to be silly, expressive, and magical (unapologetically queer!) without anyone making fun of him for it.

The end result is a much calmer, happier, likable person (like Sylvie in her timeline, his defenses are no longer on overdrive!). Who shows him this is possible?

QUEER REPRESENTATION

Sociopoliticaly, Loki and Mobius come from a different angle. A lot of men (cis, fluid, trans, or otherwise) struggle with the social expectation of burying feelings and never ever showing vulnerability, especially to another men. Now, some might argue that shipping men together perpetuates this construct. There's some truth to this, but only through the lens that it is shameful to be gay. In order to get to a point in society where there's no shame in being mistaken as gay (or queer, generally) when being affectionate with another man, there must be continuous positive representation of homosexual relationships in which the characters are not stereotypes. Loki and Mobius are exactly this, especially Mobius.

Whereas Loki, on Asgard, represents the openly queer oppressed (i.e. magic and cunning, qualities historically tied to witches or "immoral women" instead of brute strength), Mobius can represent the closeted repressed.

In S1, Mobius was much more uptight, rule-abiding, and just shy of holier-than-thou. The power structure in which he existed perpetuated this, until Loki reveals to him it was all a lie (an illusion).

In S2, he becomes more flexible, more fun-loving, and more expressive in his affection. In S1, most of his support of Loki manifested as words of affirmation. In S2, his support extended to physical touch and bonding. Mobius, if seen through the lens of a closeted man allegory, finds the courage (and partner) to slowly come out.

I've written a little bit for "I'm addicted, I replay (play, play)" today and doing my best not to edit the whole thing. Watching Drew's promos and segments while figuring out his dialogue because he has a Scottish accent. I definitely don't want to mess up and I'm afraid to.

It seems like everyone is happy with the schedule so far, which is great news. If you didn't get a chance to fill in that form and still want to, it's here.

We thought we'd make this post just to answer a few questions that were submitted.

Do we need to submit our portfolios?

This event is open for everyone, no matter how much or how little experience you have in creating, so there's no need to submit anything except the sign up form in order to participate.

How do the signups work when they open up?

Sign ups will open on 20th November and will be via a google form (much like the interest check). Writers, Artists, and Beta Readers sign ups will open simultaneously and we'll make a post on tumblr to announce it with the links to the forms - keep an eye out! We don't have an exact time that they'll open yet but will probably end up scheduling a post for midnight (GMT or similar - currently mods are in europe) but it'll be self reblogged throughout the sign up period, so hopefully no one will miss it.

We'll ask for your contact details (name, primary handle, email address and discord if you have it) and any details on co-authors/artists if you have them. Writers don't need to submit fic details yet (though we'd certainly encourage you to start work on your fic once you're signed up) as the fic details form that we'll use for claims will be sent out in january. So yes - you can sign up with 0% of a plan, as long as you'll have one by January 22nd, when fic details forms are due.

What are the rules and guidelines?

We have an about/FAQ here (or alternatively linked in our pinned post) which we're trying to keep updated as we get new questions! But anything you can't find on there or anything that doesn't make sense, please do send us an ask.

Is it for ao3 only or tumblr too?

All fics must be posted on AO3, where we will have a collection for this event (that we'll create and explain nearer the time) so if you're considering signing up as a writer and don't have an AO3 account yet, please join the waitlist for an account. Fics can be posted and promoed on tumblr too - we'd certainly love to be able to reblog all works onto this account - but they don't have to be.

As for art, it's up to the artists to discuss with their team how art is going to be posted. It can be posted on AO3, or on tumblr, or even twitter, but wherever it is it must clearly link to the fic (and vice versa - the fic must clearly link to the art)

Will artists/betas know during claims what adaptation an author is basing their work off? [NB: i rephrased this question from a suggestion]

Yes! This will be part of the fic details forms that writers will submit ready for claims.

Since art can take many forms and doesn't necessarily have to be drawing, we won't put any restrictions on what art can be made and in what style. However, it needs to fit into the rating and tags of the fic it will go with, and we'd recommend that an artist stick to the particular adaptation/s that the fic is based on.

Is there a twitter page to retweet?

Not yet I'm afraid. We're working on that, and have just created a bluesky. We'll update you is and when we get a twitter up and running!

Is it possible to sign up as a pinch hitter only?

Yes definitely! Pinch hitter sign ups will open on January 7th, as author sign ups close, so just keep an eye out for that. Please note we can't guarantee if there will be anything available for you, or when it will come available, or what exactly it'll be.

Hello dutchie! I've re-read your fics multiple times now and now I want to write my own! I have to ask: do you have any writing tips or advice about fanfic in general? I enjoy your pacing but I have no clue how you manage to update every week. Cheers!

OH MY GOD EEEEE ;___; IM SO HAPPY TO HEAR THAT MY FRIEND!! AND HIII ^_^ that's so awesome im so proud of you!!! hmm idk if i'm really a great person to get advice from, this is just stuff that works for me personally and my hectic irl schedule so just take it with a grain of salt!! ;-; <3 BUT i will gladly talk about it HEHE!! i'll actually just make an entire post about my writing process at some point because making long posts forces me to reflect and i'm overdue for a Self Reflection on how i write so! if/when i do that i'll link it back on this post heh ^_^ BUT ANYWAY!

i have a few Personal Rules about posting/writing fic that i must never break... and this is...:

feel free to break up your (longer) fic into parts. this prevents SO much burnout and gives you time to breathe between writing! if you're in it for the long haul like me, it's easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you're on a Crunch, which is never good! :'(

so i don't technically write a new chapter every week and post it on friday; i've had malus, for example, complete for a few months now! and so now it just "posts on a queue" where i just upload the next chapter every week! so for example, if malus is 21 chapters, at 1 chapter a week, that gives me 21 weeks (about 5 months) to write my next fic. that's a lot of time!

always finish the fic before you post it. this seems super unrealistic At First but i love the "arc/seasons/parts" style of posting, especially if it's long fics. nobody's saying you have to finish a 293849283498234 chapter fic in one day LOL but if you find that you're overwhelmed at the idea of writing Long Fics, then don't write one! write shorter parts that Combine and Create a long fic! :-) see what i mean? this is also an effective way to show time passing in your fic instead of just "~*~ two years later ~*~"-type of disclaimers.

chapters shouldn't be more than like... 3 google doc pages and paragraphs should be broken up. i like keeping my fic chapters short-ish so that they're easily digestible and force readers to Linger on the parts that i want them to. giant walls of text can sometimes put Huge Moments in your fics at the risk of getting lost!

let yourself sit on it for at least 2 days before you post it. do not read your own fic during the "sitting on it" time. let yourself back away from it and invite your mind to think about other things!! i've caught a LOT of my own mistakes or inconsistencies this way!

much easier said than done, but try not to let yourself get wrapped up in "the numbers" of posting (views, kudos, etc). obviously our goal as creatives is to get our work seen, but please remember to value yourself and your art above the numbers game! ;-; it literally took me a year (as of january lol) of constantly promoting my fics on twt (and later on here once i made an acct) before i found all of the amazing readers i have now! ^u^ and i wouldn't trade them for the world. i'd happily take 10 readers who comment and talk to me like a person over 100 hits/kudos or whatever!

that being said, don't be afraid to promote your fics. i felt annoying and stupid promoing mine but i'm ultimately so glad i did

there are probably others but i think these are my biggest ones (other than delving into like. tf2-specific "guides" i have for myself but i won't bore you with those). as far as tips for outlining or planning, i just have a channel in my gf and i's server dedicated to my fic that i post random snippet's i've written and want to include, random one-word concepts, like literally any time my brain has a Fic Related Thought i slap it in there. i'm also a huge fan of Linear/Traditional outlining too and do that with my more Complicated/Larger concepts that i want to execute in my fics so that i can stay consistent! :-)

Accents and pronunciation are super interesting to me, and I'm always fascinated by how much variation there is across the world~ I also find it amusing that you, the American, say it as "Yur," as in 'shine yer shoes guvna', while I, the Brit, say it basically as 'yee-ha', despite being the furthest thing imaginable from a cowboy. I'm glad I came up with a few novel ways to mispronounce Nevada. What was your favourite? I must admit, I'm a fan of Neevada! If you wake up one morning and every sign in your state has been graffitied to 'correct' the spelling in line with my terrible pronunciation, you know who's to blame. Yesterday I was lucky enough to have my begging work. I was able to get food last night thanks to a generous daddy so that was good. The delivery guy delivered it to the wrong address so I had to run around in my robe looking for the order and was so happy when I found it just down the street. I haven't had that good of a meal in a long time and I'm so full now. I can go to bed feeling full. That's always a good feeling

F/ovember FAQ

I wanted to write out this little post of any general questions about this event. Please give it a read if you're interested in participating! 🧡

What is F/ovember?

F/ovember is an f/o takeover event spanning for the entire month of November, from the 1st to the 30th, where self shippers are encouraged to give their f/os control of their blog for the month.

What's an f/o takeover?

An f/o takeover is a one-person event that used to be pretty popular in the self-ship community, where bloggers give their f/o(s) control of their blog (a.k.a. you essentially get to roleplay as your f/o) and invite their followers to ask their f/o(s) questions, typically about their self ship.

I've never done an f/o takeover before! What are the rules?

That's the beauty of this event; the simplicity! The basic guideline is that your f/o is the one answering questions, but the rest is up to you! That being said, there are two rules that I encourage everyone to follow:

One, if someone sends you an ask, send one back to them if they're participating as well! It's good ask karma and you might make a new friend out of it too!

Two, please do not write your f/o saying mean or hurtful things about you. If it's a lighthearted jab or part of your lore, then thats a slight exception, but they would never say anything genuinely hateful about you, I promise 💝

Do I have to keep up the takeover for the entire month to participate?

Not at all! You're encouraged to have the takeover on your blog for the whole month, of course, but you can do it as long as a week, a weekend, or even just a single day. You can even do it for a week, drop the event, and then pick it back up later in the month if you'd like to!

What if I want to do the takeover with only a few/one of my f/os, or do the takeover with only a certain type of f/o (platonic, familial, etc)?

Then do it!! You're allowed to use as few or as many f/os as you want, and any type of f/o you want! You can even switch which f/o or what type is answering questions from day to day (i.e. having a day/week for all platonic f/os).

Who is running/moderating this event? Who is allowed to join? How can I sign up?

I came up with the event idea on my own (my name's Ruby if you don't know me, hi :3), so I suppose that technically makes me its sole moderator, but that is only in the most loose of terms. This is being held on each person's individual blog, so there is no type of sign-up process required! However, that also means there's not much I can do against someone joining other than blocking them and advising others to do the same.

That being said, I would appreciate if anyone who matches my DNI section of my Carrd, especially pr*shippers and c*mshippers, does not interact with this event or use the tags for it either. This is event is not for you.

I'm really sorry to hear that. While there's no solid way to guarantee asks in your inbox, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances. You can try making a promo post for your takeover, and be sure to tag all your posts related to it with "f/ovember", as well as other tags like "f/o takeover", "fovember", and "self ship community" so people who frequent those tags can see it. You can also try sending asks out to other self shippers who are doing a takeover, as they're likely to send one back. In addition to that, I'll be trying to send an ask to everyone participating, so if I missed you then please do not be afraid to send me a quick message about it!

being sick means being treated like a baby. levi would do everything for you. cooking, cleaning, laundry, setting your clothes to be ready when you step out of the shower, drying your hair if you feel too sore. he will have you resting in bed all day or on the couch with a blanket, cuddled up with you and playing your favorite show/movie. he’d help you get to the bathroom if you really need it.

throughout the day, he would make tea with a bit of ginger or honey to soothe your throat, also because it helps you relax. will force you to take medicine, even if you dont feel like it. and depending on the severity of the sickness, if you’re not able to lift yourself up, he’ll help you bathe and he doesnt give a damn about getting sick himself.

then when you’re all better and now he’s sick, hes such a big baby and in denial about it or needing help XD

Levi would ensure you stay in bed and only get up if you need to use the toilet. He does everything for you and you have to tell and remind him that you are capable of doing everything on your own.

"Bullshit," Levi says as he scoops some congee into a spoon, blowing on it gently before bringing it to your mouth. "You're sick and you should remain in bed because that's what a good patient does." Levi scowls as he feeds you the congee, making sure you swallow properly before feeding you another mouthful.

"B-but, I'm bored to death, Levi, I've been in bed all day..." you sulked as Levi passed you a glass of water with a straw, letting you drink water easily.

"Fine, we'll watch a movie later, okay? But you need to take a nap first." Levi relented and you gladly nodded your head. When you finished your congee, Levi feeds you your medicine and watches you sleep. He gently brushes your hair and rubs your back, pulling you closer into his embrace as he accompanies you to dreamland.

When you wake up from your nap, Levi kept to his promise and allows you choose a movie to watch. The both of you cuddle under the warm blankets and instead of popcorn, Levi sliced some fruits for snacks instead. Halfway through, you dozed off and lay your head on Levi's shoulder.

"Hey," Levi gently tapped you. "Wake up, you have to take your shower first before you sleep." You rubbed your eyes, still drowsy from your medication. Instead of telling him you were tired, you let out a yawn instead. Sighing, Levi scooped you underneath his arms and carried you to the bathroom, setting you on top of the toilet seat. Levi slowly removed your layers and gave you a sponge bath, making sure the temperature of the water was just right. Levi also brought you a new change of clothes and carried your sleepy self back to bed.

As you got comfortable under the blankets, Levi came back with a warm glass of honey lemon.

"Drink this, it's good for your throat," Levi hands you the glass with a slight cough.

"Wait, are you falling sick?" Your eyes widened, afraid that you passed Levi the sick bug. Levi coughed again.

"My throat's itchy. Drink that, it's not effective when it's cold." Levi urges you to drink the warm honey lemon while it was his turn to take a shower. When he returned, Levi saw the empty glass by the bedside table and you snuggling into your bolster.

"Good girl." Levi whispers as he kisses your forehead, turning off the lights as he joined you in bed.

When you recover, it was Levi's turn to fall sick. Yet, being the stoic and 'cool guy' he think he is, Levi refuses to see a doctor, or to let you take care of him.

"I-I'm fine—achoo!" Levi sneezes midway while you were talking to him. With the blankets pulled up to his jaw, Levi turned his back towards you, refusing to let you see him weak.

"Aw, come on Levi, don't be a baby. Let me take care of you okay?" You whined, rolling on the bed to meet face to face with Levi. His nose was red and his eyes were a little watery.

"Please, Levi? Hmm?" You looked at him with the best imitation of the puppy-eye that you could manage, and Levi closed his eyes.

"Tch, f-fine—achoo!" Levi blew his nose on a piece of tissue. "Only just for today." You giggled, slowly helping Levi to sit upwards to feed him a bowl of chicken soup. Although Levi said it was just for today, you knew what he meant was that he will let you take care of him until he recovers.

Hello, I've been a selfshipper for a long time, but somehow I can't find the connection to the community, what can I do to get interactions on my f/os posts? It's no fun if I run my blog just for myself like a ghost.. 😔😢

hi anon! unfortunately theres no cheat to get people to interact with your posts. being in the community over a year myself, i have definitely noticed there is a major problem with people not reblogging people's posts which is disheartening as a creator. i know unless i literally write "this is ok to reblog" on my art then it doesn't get many interactions lol and writers have it way worse so.. to be honest i do not have an answer for you, im afraid.

the easiest support system here is to make friends, and have people that genuinely care about your ships. i know i personally have gotten to a point where i dont particularly care about reaching the "community" because ive managed to make a bunch of real good friends and as long as they like my stuff then im fulfilled. i feel like that is the best way to approach any sort of fandom adjacent space.

if its followers/mutuals you're looking for, i suggest putting yourself out there. follow others, show interest in their ships, join servers, make promo posts, etc. but also i do feel like this is a two way street where if you are not supporting other people then you cannot expect to get interactions yourself, you know?

i wish you all the best. just please do not base your self worth on social media numbers. i know it feels shit when people don't interact, but you're doing great and your f/os would be very proud of you for putting yourself out there.

Hi, I'm Sarah, and I had been watching the self-shipping community from afar for a year, until I decided to put this blog out there when last year began.

I'm 33 years old, so if an adult of that age interacting with you is a bother, don't be afraid to ask me to unfollow! My pronouns are a lot; they/them will suffice most of the time. I also have yet to come up with a pseudonym, so please feel free to give me a nickname if you want! I'm also a sex-repulsed aroace, which feels very important to state upfront!

I've been a self-shipper since before I made friends with others who fangirled like that in our wee baby teen internet years. So like. 19 years. That is a long time, especially with the same f/o, so you can say that we've grown together? Or, more likely, he's seen me grow and mature as a person. A LOT. And he's very proud of me to the point that it's almost sappy.

Anyhoo. I don't really know what all to put in these things. This blog is primarily a happy place blog; it'll serve as a collective of posts for my main f/o, and my idol children. And whatever else catches my fancy. The mobile link for my f/o list is in my bio.

My main f/o of the last 20 years is Lance from Pokemon! Because of the time we've shared, and how special he's been for me, he is the one f/o that i am not comfortable sharing. Like, I don't mind talking about him and fangirling with others! But seeing others' ships with him feels very.... Weird and awkward and overall uncomfortable! So I might not be able to interact much on a ship level; I will, however, GLADLY fangirl the heck out of him with you, tho! My best idol kids are Otoya from Utapri; and Rin, Nozomi Mari, Hanamaru, & Ai from LLSIF. I don't really have a significantly self-insert familial status with them despite calling 'em my kids, they're just my bestest boy/girls, who I know would be cheering me on, and going thru a bunch of fanart of them is sure to make my day. Especially when my best kids are the ones who have some of the best smiles and biggest energies.

Other than my idol kids, I've accepted that Silver is basically like a son to Lance, which makes him like a redheaded stepson for me. And there's Ms. Honey from the Isle of Armor DLC, who makes for a kickass and supportive mom. I love her, please adopt me.

I've also adopted the Universe 6 Saiyans Cabba, Caulifla, and Kale as my kids, bc they're such good kids. Auriana from Lolirock and Tsuruno from Magia Record make for the best orange magical girls that I also want to adopt. Did you know that Fret from Neo: TWEWY is my bi fashion icon son? Because he is.

There might be some other stuff, like Team Golden Deer or Boogiepop, the latter of whom I don't know if i want to be or if i just really really like the character of.

Ack, this is getting really long! It's become more of an intro than a self-promo! {different anon} Does anyone else feel weird about self-promo? I've been told my work is cool, but I feel like I'm capable of getting so much more attention? I'm just too anxious about being seen as greedy to promote & talk to others. Like you said, I don't want to sound greedy or flippant, but I don't know if people understand how much effort goes into people's work. I've also had my ideas stolen by bigger name fans and they get more notes and coverage while I think my delivery was better.

first of, i want to say it’s really, really shitty what happened to you. having your ideas stolen is awful and it’s sad because sharing, discussing and brainstorming ideas is so much fun, but you shouldn’t be afraid of someone else taking it away from you. ♥

so, on the topic of self-promo/self-reblogs: i just want to make it clear that i have absolutely nothing against people doing it. i don’t think it’s selfish, i don’t think it comes of as greedy— on a purely intellectual level, i know it’s something good and everyone does it and should be allowed to do it.

the thing is, it always feels a lot more gratifying to get recced by other people than having to do it yourself. and i think that’s why it feels weird? you’re posting your work because you want that validation; because you want others to recognise you. i get that reblogging your own stuff raises the chances of getting that recognition, but a) it makes me as anxious as you as i’m afraid of annoying other people and b) it also gets exhausting from time to time. that’s why i only do it with stuff i’m really proud of— because it makes me sad to see these posts die.

i can only tell you what i’ve told the other nonny: please always feel free to tag me in your posts and i make sure to reblog them. it won’t give you much more exposure but it’s something that i can do to support you. ♥
