Promises

He should know better. 

Wolfwood has seen Vash make promises, or hear about the ones he has made in the past. He has also seen the end of each one and how every single time the outcome is less than what was promised. 

Vash likes to say embellished words, with a soft and determined voice that lures you into his hopes and dreams, it almost feels like a spell, as if he was calling for you to come closer and believe him. But Wolfwood knows better.

He believes in him, but Vash is much closer to being an idealistic dreamer than a realistic person like he is. He might not be aware of it, but his beautiful promises of a better future give people hope, a hope that is usually embraced with things like disappointment and abandonment. 

He doesn’t think that Vash does it with the intent of looking for any of those things. Far from it, he might even do the impossible in order to accomplish said promises, but life is too short and humans are too mortal for his wishes, so in the end, most of Vash’s promises end up being empty or they come to haunt him as a reminder of his failed vows. He admires the man, for his perseverance and idealism, but he also hates the man, for his stubbornness and lies. 

Wolfwood knows all of this perfectly to a tee. And yet, he has also found himself being drawn to his world. Because he also dreams of it.

A world in where his always present calls for love and peace exist, a world that is far more kind than what he might deserve, a world in where the kids can be happy and roam around without any worry in their heads, a world in where he can peacefully turn grey with age and his hands can shed the harsh callouses of his life. Who knows, maybe a world in where he and Vash can finally know the peace that was taken away from them, in where they can share the calmness that comes with the passage of time, indulging in every tick of the clock welcoming with open arms whatever comes their way without any fear.

It is a beautiful promise. But Wolfwood is a person that has to keep his feet on the ground, indulging in “what ifs” would only make things harder than what they had to be. He can’t have any ifs if he can’t make it through the now. And by the way he is carrying his present, he is doubtful he will even get to see a shed of that promised world that Vash tries to drag him into. So why mourn something he doesn’t even have, or will ever have for that matter.

He hates the way Vash seems to promise things so easily. His tongue silky and pliant, slipping divine words one after the other, promises way too big for what that barren world can actually fit. 

But when Vash talks to him in that holy voice of his, when he hears him say “It’s okay, everything will be alright, I promise” so gently right on his ear, while he holds his face so tenderly making him focus on him and nothing else, he wants to believe him.

He has seen the end of his promises. He knows how impossible they are. But for once, he wants to believe it too. Believe in that loving world that will cradle them both until they fall asleep, listening to the soft sound of the wind laughing while the moons smile upon them. 

So he allows himself to indulge in the warmth of his palms, leaning into the comfort of his existence, feeling the soft air of Vash’s breaths against his skin while their foreheads meet in a touch that feels like a hot brand that will melt him.

For an instant, he allows himself to be selfish and believe that maybe, that is how living in that world Vash so desperately fights for would be. Soft and warm, making him feel safe in the hollow of Vash’s hands where the world seems to fit so well. A world where the blue sky is a blanket that covers the love and care that is nestled in it like the one in Vash’s eyes. He wants to see that world.

For now, he will selfishly think that the world that fits in Vash’s hands is right there in where he is holding him, where his blue eyes are drowning in the light of the sunset dripping with love and care while looking at him, that the gentle touch of Vash’s thumb wiping his tears is the same as the kiss of that laughing wind in that distant future, where the smile of his eyes overcomes the smile of the moons.

He should know better. But he loves the thought of that world. And he hopes that Vash will get to see that world, because that gentle sight is more fitting for someone like him than the one of his violent world.

He promises to himself that he will do what it takes for that day to be possible. Even if the end of that promise will be empty for Nicholas, he knows it will be a full one for Vash. So it really isn’t that empty for him after all.

He hates his lies, and he hates how true they sound, but Vash’s embellished words are far sweeter than his bitter thoughts so they feel better on his insides, almost like a balm that cares for the wounds of his throbbing, painful reality.

He should know better.

But aren’t humans weak at the promise of love?

I started watching Maude a while ago thanks partially to some of your art and I'm on season6 and. Maude and Vivian kissed. A peck. But they definitely kissed on the lips on purpose. And in another episode Maude is whispering things in Vivian's ear eith their faces pressed up against each other and her hand just creeps up her back. Nobody warned me about this!!! Or about how Maude is just soooooo. She's soooooo. You know? I'm in love. Thanks for inspiring me to watch it.

ohhhhh Maude and Viv… ohhh boy. The episode where they ended up on a game show together lives in my head for a few reasons, but there’s one specific moment where Viv gives Maude this look and I just …. They’re married your honour. I had no idea I was going to be hit in the face with yet another wlw pairing I adored from media that both Bea and Rue happened to be in (although honestly, should have expected it haha - those two had insane chemistry!!!), going into my first Maude watch with 0 knowledge was a blessing. (And you mentioned it already but, don’t even get me started on how often Maude’s hands are all over her back like that!!!! Oh my!!!! I know exactly which scene you’re talking about there 🚶🏻‍♀️)

Also - (assuming you’re the same anon haha) I just saw your second ask about Maude being canonically bipolar & I know right!!!! This show was very ahead of its time, such a refreshing watch. Maude’s character in general was very ahead of her time, I don’t think you’d be seeing a lot of women with a personality like hers be the star of the show very often (when they absolutely should have been). I just adore her.

"Look I understand that we are on our third Satan fic and it is probably nerve-wracking to write about him more.."

"But I am writing," Subconscious huffs. "The fuck you are talking about?"

Eden could only sigh. "You were writing the 'Point of No Return' fic."

"...?"

"You were supposed to finish the 'Fight for Me' fic."

"..???"

"You are currently writing about Lucifer, of all people."

it’s time for me to tell you about boatem circus mumbo. where does he come from? how did he get into the circus? what’s the trauma he carries? 

boatem circus mumbo is an enderman hybrid. they’re kind of rare, and some people are very interested in their teleporting ability. this leads to mumbo getting captured and taken to a specialised lab to be studied entirely against his will. 

this lab is a floating manmade island. entirely surrounded by water. 

water hurts endermen. which means mumbo can’t use his abilities to get away, because there’s nowhere safe for him to teleport to, outside of this island that’s now become his prison. he’s put in a small room, the walls of which are infused by running water, serving as a constant barrier. a perfect cell to contain an enderman hybrid.

but it’s more than a cell. it’s also the research lab. it’s not made with a sliver of comfort in mind; quite the opposite, it’s imbued with countless traps and mechanisms, from spikes and pits to fire and lava. it doesn’t contain a bed, even though it’s meant for long-term containment.

the research is set up to focus on studying the limits of teleporting. all the hows: how far, how often, how many times in a row, etc. the way they’re doing this is, essentially, by putting mumbo in harmful situations. hence the traps littering the room! lava from the ceiling? floor dropping from underneath him? water from somewhere? spikes? lots of ways to hurt him!

he doesn’t have a choice here. mere survival and fear of pain takes over. he’s forced to teleport to avoid harm.

he’s kept in almost constant motion. his mind is in overdrive. there’s a constant sense of danger and impending doom of not knowing where it’ll come from this time. all he knows is to jump away from pain. (personally, i like to think this is where mumbo’s antsy restlessness comes from.)

it goes on for days. weeks. with barely any breaks. 

it exhausts him. he can’t keep up. at some point it’s simply too much.

he’s so scared. everything hurts. he can’t.

he can’t do it anymore. even if he’d want to, he can’t.

they wear him down to nothing, so much so that his teleportation abilities fail and he can no longer get out of the way of danger at all besides belated stumbles which do very little, and aren’t what the researchers are after. they grant him longer rest, but it barely seems to fix anything. he’s burned out, overworked, done. stripped of everything that used to make him seem special in their eyes.

it reaches a point when they consider him useless. that’s how exhausted he is.

and this is when he overhears them talking about dropping him overboard. just dumping him in the water. into the ocean. (that’d surely kill him.) getting rid of him as if he was nothing.

he can’t do anything about it.

but someone proposes to sell him instead! that way they can at least get some cash for him.

so they take him to a black market. put water-magic imbued shackles around his wrists (they hurt, they burn), shove him in a cage, and start figuring out how this whole selling hybrids works.

scar, coincidentally, crosses their path.

he sees this hybrid, worn down and caged and terrified, and… he has to act, right? he has to.

what happens is that he cons them. (<3) he uses his wonderful silver tongue, gives them some money, and says he’ll sell mumbo for them, he has contacts, etcetc. and then he’ll give them the rest of the money once the deed is done, based on how much mumbo sells for! a great deal! don’t worry about a thing!

he smooth talks his way until he has mumbo in his possession.

they’re still in the black market. mumbo’s still shackled and caged. he’s terrified. he doesn’t know scar, or his intentions. he fully expects to be sold to someone horrible, or to another hell of a lab.

scar takes him somewhere private, and instead of anything mumbo expects, he… opens the cage.

mumbo presses into the far corner, so so so scared, and he flinches at scar’s approach, and—

scar apologises?

so softly.

and he undoes mumbo’s shakles.

the very moment they’re off and the water magic relents, running on pure instinct and fear, mumbo teleports. 

just once. not even very far. just outside of the cage.

it’s as much as he can manage, honestly. teleporting carries so much for him now. memories of danger and pain and fear tangled with the ever-present fatigue that pins him in place.

he didn’t even really mean to do it; it’s just become instinctual when he feels a smidge of a possible threat. he did it without thinking, and… he can’t do it again. he feels weak and dizzy and nauseous, half-ready to collapse just from that. even though his freedom is at stake, he simply can't do it.

(but he doesn’t have to. he doesn’t. scar’s there. mumbo’s going to be okay.)

gently, quietly, scar tells him it’s okay. he won’t hurt him. he tells him that he’s free to go, but if he has nowhere to go, he can come with scar. 

it sounds like a trap. like just another scam.

but mumbo has nowhere to go. and scar is so gentle with him?

he ends up giving in and going with scar. and scar never gave him a reason to regret it.

he becomes part of the boatem circus. and even then, he doesn’t teleport for months afterwards. and he doesn’t participate in the circus shows for the longest time. (not until grian comes along.)

when arthur gets thrown in the dungeons, bayard and his entire delegation are STILL THERE. imagine you're a king come to sign a peace treaty and end war, get falsely accused of trying to kill the prince and get chucked in the dungeons, and then two days later you hear the very same prince loudly arguing with the king about the boy you watched almost die the other day, and then he gets locked up too. what a time to be alive. that's probably why uther let arthur out the next day instead of after the promised week, it would give a weird impression of camelot to let the whole mercian delegation walk past the prince behind bars when they get released

Hey first I want to say that I really like your in depth posts on Dragon Age! Can I ask if you have any information and/or insights on the Jainen Circle from Legends? And do you think it's canon?

Everything That Happens Involving the Jainen Circle of Magi:

The First Enchanter is Jendrik whenever DAL is set (it's canonically sometime after the start of the 5th blight, but imo it's more specifically set somewhere from 9:34-9:37).

Sometime before you arrive in Jainen, the Circle is overrun by demons.

The leader of the local dragon cultists, Deymour, sends his lieutenant, Guillen, to kill Jendrik. If you head too far into Jainen without going to the Circle, Jendrik will die, otherwise you save him. If you save him, he's too wounded to help you so he just...leaves, I guess. He doesn't get any dialogue or a sprite or anything.

When you fight through the Circle, you fight both templars and mages (who are fighting together). I don't think you fight any demons until the very end, which has one desire demon as a boss.

The source of the demon(s) is Deymour who, as part of the overarching plot of DAL, is hosting a shard of a pride demon's soul in him. It's not explicitly stated that he summoned the demon(s), but his whole pride demon thing and also his general involvement (asking Guillen to kill Jendrik) is a pretty good indicator.

No matter the outcome, none of this is ever mentioned again.

Is the Jainen Circle Canon?

Nothing from DAL is canon.

That said, most of the game can be stretched to fit into canon (even Eiton being 'born Tranquil', fight me), and the Jainen Circle isn't any less realistic than anything else in DAL. Honestly, the main potential conflicts with canon are probably:

The times when we've been told how many circles there are (either 14 or 15; it's not even consistent). There are more than that listed on the wiki, even without including Jainen. However, quite a few of those Circles only have references from hundreds of years ago and may not exist anymore, so even 14 is enough to include Jainen as one of them.

Kinloch Hold is generally discussed in canon as THE Circle in Ferelden, replacing Denerim's Circle in 3:87. Maybe Jainen's just smaller or too remote or something, idk.

Now it can be stressful living with a sibling you’re not out to. But it definetly has its moments of accidental comedy.

Exhibit A: My brother, upon trying to go through my phone’s pictures, saying “Typical girl!” when I told him to shove off. The photos he would have seen were posters for drag events, screenshots of discount codes for packers, 80 pictures of various historical trans men and a lot of Napoleonic War dress uniforms

Exhibit B: “So you’re like, a lesbian, right? Do girls like cannabalism?” Apparently he was trying to get advice on how to ask someone out. This was immediately followed by “Do they like Arctic or Antarctic explorers more?” Oh, buddy. I didn’t know how to break it to him that I’m not a good measure of what The Ladies are into these days (see Exhibit A)… Also, don’t start any conversation with do you like cannabalism if you want to date that person.

Exhibit C: “My classmate asked what your pronouns are and I told her you didn’t have any.”

Exhibit D: “You know [The Theatre] you go to? I met someone who knew you and she called you a ‘he’ and a ‘they.’ So you do drag or something?”
