Pinned post tiem
I’m Amber or Bee, she/they, nb lesbian
this is my main blog! I rb things I like, find funny, or things I don’t enjoy but probably find important, you can check my about for more info on that
p much everything is tagged, so genuinely feel free to go thru my tags at your leisure, browsing my archive is cool and u can spam reblog I don’t mind I prommy (if u spam reblog my art I’ll blow u a kiss, even)
Here’s my art blog and if u follow it u are my beloved
If you’re new to tumbies, here’s a few posts to getcha started (x) (x) (x) (x) (x)
My own personal tumblr tips below
Getting weird asks? Turn of anonymous asks, people won’t send you near as much weird stuff if they can’t hide (anon hate is a thing here, it happens mainly with blogs with a lot of followers, and that stops mainly when anon is off)
On the other side, hey! Don’t send weird asks! Be nice to people, please!
Neil Gaiman has had an account here forever, he answers his inbox, he’s quite nice to people, be nice to him, don’t be weird.
April fools is really fun here, log in on April 1st! It’s different every year
Don’t buy a blog theme, look up one you like, plenty of sites have them. Some tumblr blogs have them! Googling “tumblr theme” gets you where you wanna go
In your blog customization settings, it lets you add pages and links! On mobile, though, you can’t see these, so linking them in your bio as well helps more people see the links
The post limit is 200 or 250 a day, usually I never reach it but the site doesn’t really tell you, just doesn’t let you post after that
Queue is your friend!! You can schedule posts, schedule what time you want your posts to happen (i.e. posting 3 times a day at prime time or 50 posts a day all day, etc) and it lets you batch upload art without spamming or it getting lost in a sea of your own posts, xkit has an extension that lets you auto tag your queued posts, some people have cutesy pun ones, mine is just the letter #q
Readmore is good! The text limit is Not Twitter, you can post fics here if you want without adding screenshots! You can add a setting wheres you can have long posts shortened (other people have to have this enabled for it to shorten your post), but it’s common courtesy to put fics in readmores after, like, a paragraph or so, or a description
Please use tags! And filtering! Under Settings > general > content you see, you can block key words and tags. Tags have to be Exact! Keywords should filter any post with that word or phrase, so when tagging your own content warnings, please don’t use // at the end, it makes it harder for people to filter!
Ex: #tw: blood// #blood/// #blood tw// #bl0od/
Ex: #blood / #tw blood / #blood tw
And if you don’t want to see certain content, varying what you put in filtering helps. Because some people just tag the tw and some people add tw before or after, helps to add variation so nothing slips through!
First 5 tags are what show up in the search, feel free to talk in the tags! But have the first few tags what u actually want people to look up to find your post!
AN IMPORTANT NOTE: unless this changed and I wasn’t aware, I’m pretty sure if you have a link AT ALL in your post, it gets hidden from the tag search. Still shows up on your blog but the audience is not as wide— you can reblog your own post again and add links after the original post, or ask in the post to check the notes for the link. Shadowbanning accounts isn’t a thing here but posts can get shadowbanned kinda
Also adding “mutual aid” or “donations” to a help post shadow bans it, please don’t do that when making or reblogging a help post
You can go through tags! So you can make tags for your art, comics, characters, etc and sort them that way on your own blog, it’s super helpful! No like, idk, twitter collection needed
My talking tags are #amber talks for examples and my art is #my art, I can go through all of these whenever I want!
Give yourself an icon, and post like, something, anything. A lot of people (myself included) scope out new followers to make sure they’re not bots, and if I see an empty blog and no icon, I usually block, on the other side, if YOU see this, probably block
Block porn bots. They follow you to make their accounts seem more legitimate; following real users makes their accounts not look as botty, and might attract other bots to your blog as well, and speaking of them, don’t click their links lol, they’re either viruses, scams, or phishing scams, in general be careful of links, especially if it has an offer or it’s from someone you don’t know asking you to “test out their game”. You can get hacked and then your post will spit out spam for a while and possibly deleted from staff. Even if it’s from someone you know, check to make sure their account wasn’t hacked, especially if it’s an offer or deal or Raycon Sunglasses
Lots of people have main blogs and art blogs, but some people post art on main, or you can have an art blog and always reblog your art to your art blog/main blog; double dipping isn’t discouraged
You can reblog something as many times as you want, there’s no “you’ve tweeted this before” alert, old posts make the rounds again and you can reblog your art for morning or afternoon crowds so more of your followers see it, self reblogs are common!
Adding more tips as I think of them!

File Hunting Tutorial
In this tutorial I’ll be going through some file searching methods I’ve been using to find lost/hard to find files. I’m sharing this so you too can get good at using your google-fu and expand the list of useful sites and sources to help.
I started writing this already last year and had it saved in the drafts and then forgot all about it until vegan-kaktus noted that it’s still in the drafts. So I gave it one last poke and it’s finally ready to be posted. Consider it a parting gift from me (digi) It’s really long so the rest is under read more which, hopefully, should show up right after this row, happy reading! :)
1. File uploaded to Dropbox:
Oh no, the link is dead! What to do? Well there are two things you can do:
Slap that link to archive.org - sometimes if you’re lucky it has it archived and you can download through that. (not often but it’s always worth a try)
Look at the url and find the filename, for example:
highlighted above is the filename, now copy that part and slap it to google and if you have any luck somebody already has reuploaded it somewhere. If not then you still at least have the file name to help with the search.
2. I have picture of the thing, can I use that?
If it’s from the original upload that can be useful, now open google’s image search and hit this:
paste/upload your picture and if you have any luck you’ll get hits with the same picture, those are occasionally reuploads of the file or maybe even the original source. Sometimes this is useless though, google might just give you its best guess at what the picture shows and it’s pretty much always wrong.
Additionally, you can try other search engines since they give different kinds of results, Yandex has positively surprised me few times when google failed.
3. The thing was posted behind multiupload (or similar now dead service), what to do?
Okay so first, go to the page where the link was posted, right click on the download address and copy that with “copy link” or whatever it happens to be in your browser since those differ between them.
Open web.archive.org, paste the address you copied there:
With some luck you’ll receive some hits like this:
Click on any of the blue dots, if one doesn’t work, try another. Also note: if dots are green it means the link redirects somewhere, usually to random ad sites, but it could also just mean the address of the site has changed so be careful. If you have any luck the page has been archived and you’ll get something like this:
A lot of those files hosts no longer work so there’s no point in trying Megaupload, Depositfiles, hotfile, zshare or 2shared links but mediafire still exists so click on its “Download file” button. On first glance it looks like it doesn’t work:
You should copy the mediafire address (or if it was another file host then that address) and paste it to your browser’s address bar anyway to test it.
It doesn’t always work but usually, as long as the file hasn’t been deleted it should work.
Additionally about Mediafire: Sometimes some older mediafire links will tell you that they don’t work, you can sometimes fix them like this:
mediafire.com/c4txzwdlumxg/uy0nqwnjz0z/(fileName) (original link) mediafire.com/c4txzwdlumxg/uy0nqwnjz0z/(fileName) (delete the overlined bit) mediafire.com/file/uy0nqwnjz0z/(fileName) (= working link, it seems to add the /file/ part automatically to the link)
(fileName) above is stand in for “Janita-scott+male+clothing+-+07+-+Mar+-+2010.rar“ since it was too long. This is actual link that was coming up with page not found error but it’s actually not missing, Mediafire just changed something about their links that made it break at some point.
4. Check chomikuj.pl!
(http://chomikuj.pl) This is some sort of Polish file sharing site that has plenty of Sims files uploaded there. It has some caveats, for example if you don’t have account you can only download files smaller than 2 MB, if you create an account you can download worth of 50 MB every week for free. It’s sounds like a lot more than it really is so if you find good loot better bookmark that page since you’ll be spending weeks getting all those files. To use the site just type whatever you’re searching to search box (I’ve found that simply using the creator name tends to have the best results)
We’re gonna search for ripplesims, the following page has some ads first so scroll down until you see the results:
Then I recommend just opening those in new tabs since there usually are plenty of results. Then to download, click on the file title:
and this kind of window will pop up:
“Pobierz” means download, you’ll want to use the top one, the other one is some kind of ad or something again. Then your browser should give you the normal download prompt and you can save the file. Here’s few users who post Sims 2 content to get you started:
rakuyou
Thumbelina 21
Justyna211
aleksandra.przybylka
mgs1991
5. Check GameVN!
(http://forum.gamevn.com/forums/downtown.281/) this is Vietnamese file sharing forum, that gets updated occasionally. A lot of newer files are just stuff from tumblr (possibly your stuff if you upload custom content, don’t be upset, that’s just how internet works, you post it, you no longer have control over it.), but they also have some older files and for example some files from gamesir.
6. Check Game.ali213!
(https://game.ali213.net/forum-295-1.html) okay so this board is pain in the ass to browse since it’s in Chinese but these two are the section you’re most likely interested in:
First one is for sharing content made by others, second for sharing original works. There’s for example: daum content, stuff from ReflexSims, some stuff from Yuri and Gameski, more daum content....
Note that some files are posted to hosts that don’t work anymore such as namipan, pan.baidu, rayfile, 91files.com.... there’s a lot of dead hosts really and you’re gonna get disappointed many times when you click on the links. But the files hosted on the forum itself usually are available, they just tend to be in multiple pieces so you need to download all of them and then choose them all at once to extract correctly.
7. Check VK.com Albums!
There probably are others but the one I most often check is: https://vk.com/albums-52214 (hit on show all albums and then start browsing, the first albums are pictures, wcifs and member uploads but then there are reuploads. Not every link works but quite few do so it’s worth checking through.)
8. Check other sites that reupload files!
I’m of course talking about Booty, Simscave, TheSimsGraveyard and Liquid Sims. Sometimes the most obvious place is exactly where you’ll find it. :)

Hey! One of my gerbils died and the other moved out to another city into the home of an other gerbil (I don't want her to be alone, they're v social lil animals), I now have an empty aquarium of 100×40×50 cm. I was thinking of using it for plants. Do you have any ideas/inspiration what kind of plant habitat I could do there? Drainage is obvsly a problem. But maybe tropical? Or the opposite, sand & succulents & cacti? Thank you for your help!
@birdylion ok first, thank you for the support RE school 🥰
——
Secondly, omg YESSSSS. Vivariums / terrariums are so much fun!! Disclaimer, I don’t have any of the cutesy glass “perfect ecosystem” type things that love to float around Instagram, but I definitely do some other things that make for happy plants.
——
Before explaining anything about plants / drainage / etc, first I’ve gotta do a plug for the frogs: if you’re interested in another pet, FROGS are actually awesome. They’re definitely not cuddly pets, but they’re wicked cool, especially given that it sounds like you love plants and want to combine them. They’re also easy to feed, any pet store sells crickets for big frogs and flightless fruit flies for the little ones. I have a couple poison dart frogs (not actually poisonous) and they are SO FUN.
——
Read the rest below here because it has gotten REALLY LONG... whoops.
Ok so first: addressing the kinds of plants.
I honestly don’t have a ton of experience with desert plants in terrariums, so take this with a grain of salt, but in general I think that desert plants don’t love living in terrariums (please, anyone feel free to contradict me with a reblog + photos). The air flow isn’t great, and sitting on the bottom of a glass tank is going to have trouble with drainage, just as you predicted. I’m sure watering less helps, but it’ll be harder for the total water to turn over (aka allow the plants to dry out) when being enclosed on several sides.
Tropicals: tend to do really well in terrariums that are constructed well, and if you want them to really flourish, some planning goes a long way.
----
Next: drainage / setting it up.
You have a couple options for drainage, in order by how complicated / difficult it is to accomplish:
Careful to not over-water
False bottom (my personal favorite)
Drilling bulkheads (really awesome if you’re doing a true vivarium to have plants and frogs ;) )
I suppose I have two different “enclosed plant” setups -- The Box “greenhouse” and my frog vivarium.
I’ve built a LOT of frog vivariums in my time, including working at the National Amphibian Conservation Center in Detroit for several months, and I’m currently rebuilding mine (I added bulkheads!) so don’t mind the “under construction” photos.
--
The Box
The Box is just a plastic tupperware container from Target that I used to move stuff around when I was in college, and to protect more delicate plants when I was traveling back home for the holidays. It has now become my miniature greenhouse.
There isn’t any drainage out of it, just a thin layer of coconut fiber on the bottom (a common substrate for frogs) and I mostly set potted plants directly inside of it. It’s not the prettiest thing to look at, because the pots are just sitting on the dirt, but I like keeping them separate. I use this thing as an intensive care unit for plants that aren’t doing very well or don’t tolerate room humidity, so it’s nice to be able to swap them out. I think it wouldn’t do particularly well with a thick layer of substrate at the bottom because it would sequester both water and bacteria.
If you carefully layered some sort of sand and gravel and whatnot, I’m sure it could do well, but I have never had success with that kind of setup. That tends to work better with smaller-sized things, like little table-top glass domes and whatnot.
The thing about having any kind of terrarium (including this) is being vigilant for mold. When I first started the box, I checked it daily for mold and removed whatever I found. As long as you wipe it off of the plant, it shouldn’t hurt it much — the damage to the plant occurs when the mold can sit on the plant and do damage over time.
If you stick with it long enough, it’ll come to an equilibrium and the mold won’t be so persistent. I have tons of different plants in my box, moss in the bottom, the whole shebang, and I haven’t had any problems with mold in almost a year. I think it took about two months for The Box to settle itself out and come to a good balance.
Those photos are from a while back because I’m lazy -- that frog has sadly now died of old age. The poison dart frogs don’t live in The Box.
--
False Bottomed Terrarium
So this is exactly as it says -- you build a “false bottom” for your tank, which allows space underneath for water to drain. Bonus if you add in a tube to siphon out excess water.
For my frog terrarium, I use plastic egg crate covered in household screen as my base, and PVC pipe as spacers (nice consistent size, allow air flow, etc.). The false bottom should be an inch or two above the surface of your tank. You can then plant your terrarium however you would like, with the soil directly on top of the false bottom. All excess water will collect below the surface of your soil, which helps cut down on the bacteria growing IN the soil, and keep the humidity of your tank high.
If you add a spot to snake a pipe down (have you ever seen a fishtank siphon?) to drain out excess water (just tip the terrarium to help get all the water in the same space), you’ll avoid building up lovely sulfur-smelling bacteria. You can either leave it in the corner of your tank, or jerry-rig some kind of cap somewhere that you can then put in a hose to siphon. (I haven’t done this yet in my terrarium bc it’s still under construction).
----
Lastly: Bulkheads!
If you’re really brave, you can take your tank to be drilled (or do it yourself if you’re ballsy) for bulkheads.
A bulkhead is just a hole through the glass, that you then “seal off” with a PVC bulkhead to allow you to get things in and out of the glass sides. In my terrarium, I have one bulkhead for the waterfall, one as drainage for the “pond” filtration system, and one as drainage for excess water from the land area. That REALLY helps the drainage problem, because you give yourself a hole for everything to drain from!
Keep in mind, water will still build up to the surface of the bulkhead -- it’s not perfectly flat, but it does a heck of a lot better than nothing at all.
Also: if you ever decide to convert your tank to a fishtank, bulkheads do WONDERS for fish circulation and adds up to happier and healthier fish.
If you’re curious -- I’m working with a 20 gal tank (50cm x 43cm x 33cm) for some really tiny dart frogs, so it’s easy to do even in small tanks!
--
If you go with the vivarium / landscape type setup, there are a ton of ways to make it look really cool (fake rock that builds your landscape, etc -- that’s what all the yellow foam is in my tank), but the process on that takes a long time! I’ll answer that in another ask if you’re curious!
Heck, I’m even building a waterfall and pond into my tiny tank.
Here’s some terrarium inspiration pulled off the internet for your browsing pleasure:

A Guide to Webnovels
Some of you may have heard of webnovels / webfiction by now. Huge successes like Worm or The Wandering Inn have certainly not gone unnoticed by speculative fiction fans and most of us have heard whispers about that legendary site: Wattpad. Still, webnovels remain a niche product, with its audience being mostly teenagers. People might avoid them because the quality of the novels wildly vary and it takes too long to sift through so many options until you find something decent. But how is that different from looking through self-published books? Another reason is that people might simply not know where to look. Especially with webfiction guide not accepting new users, there's no other sites that list webnovels from various sources for you to look through. Or are there?
Well, buckle up, fellow speculative-ists, I'm about to help you out with finding new, free fiction that releases at a faster rate than that one book if you've waiting for for 5 years!
(Full disclosure: I am a webnovel author. You may find my name / novel pretty quickly on one of the sites I will mention in this guide because I'm on trending and high up on the dark fantasy tag there. I'm not writing all of this for self-promotion purposes, however. It honestly makes me sad to see amazing webnovels doing poorly while average ones do amazingly simply because the audience is severely skewed. This is my attempt to broaden the audience a little bit, while giving other speculative fiction fans the chance to find amazing stories and fellow authors another outlet for their creations.)Let's get into it:The cons of webnovels
Quality does vary greatly and you'll have to sift through tags and read synopsis, reviews and first chapters looking for something you like and that is a bit timeconsuming. I still think it's not much different from looking for books you might enjoy, if you search efficiently.
Novels tend to be dropped. A lot. The golden rule that everyone tends to follow is: if it's less than 20~30 chapters or 200 pages, don't touch it. Filter out everything that is on hiatus. Big yes to novels that have at least one arc / volume / book finished.
The pros of webnovels
They're almost all completely free. Authors will have patreons, paypal and ko-fi if you want to tip them or get extra rewards, but that's it. If you don't like something, you've wasted nothing but a bit of time.
Fast releases. To make their novels competitive, authors tend to release new chapters at the very least weekly, with the most common release schedule being 2~3 times a week. Some even release daily. Some, still, release several chapters a day. You can follow the novel, forget about it during the week or for a month and end up with quite a stash of chapters to binge.
Being part of something that is being created "in real time". Webnovel authors will often ask for input from their readers, have fun polls where they ask them to vote on certain things, active discord servers, etc. You can also come up with and discuss theories and character growth as the story advances. It's a livelier community than getting a book that's finished and then you just talk about a full, finished project.
Where to look for webnovels?
With webfiction guide not accepting new members, it becomes a bit harder to find an impartial list of quality webnovels. You can still look at their top webfiction guide, but you're likely to have heard about some, if not all of the authors there. So, what to do when you've read through this list already (or browsed through it and nothing caught your attention)?
Muse's Success - This is a "sister site" to webfiction guide that serves as a directory. Webnovels have to be added manually either by fans or the authors and there is a rating system, but I can't vouch for how reliable it is.
If you want to forego directories and go right to the source, however, I'd say RoyalRoad is the biggest site for speculative webfiction. Yes, Wattpad exists, but it's largely for romance (some with speculative elements, of course), but it's also a bit of a mess to navigate and it's very unkind to new authors and works more like a SNS than an actual writing site. RoyalRoad offers better options in terms of following webnovels, looking through and filtering tags, getting rid of fictions you don't want to see, etc. It's a very good platform, overall, the best of its kind, I would say. It does lack a mobile app, but that's being worked on at the moment.
The Tops and Lists
Of course, the first place most people will look at is the tops and most viewed lists on any site. Don't be surprised if you find yourself disappointed with some of these. It happens. Make sure you don't stick to the first page only.
Best Rated - As the name indicates, this is a list of the best rated novels in the entire website. Some of them are already finished and have been so for years, some are still ongoing and have been so for years. You can select the complete only and active only best rated depending on whether you're looking for completed or on-going novels, too.
Trending - This is a list of 50 fictions that are doing the best at the moment, on the site. They call them the "rising stars" because they tend to be newer fictions, but you might find some older ones there as well.
Popular This Week - Again, as the name suggests, the novels that have been most viewed and rated the past week.
These lists tend to be somewhat repetitive. If you're on the top 7 on trending, you get a lot of exposure and that makes you rise on Popular This Week and Best Rated. It's kind of a cycle. So, what to do if you're done reading everything that interested you on these?
Search Feature
Maybe you're out of more popular stuff to read and want to dive deeper. Maybe you like finding hidden gems. Maybe you want to scratch an itch for a very specific genre. Don't fear, the search feature is here. And I'm too. I'm going to link you directly to the speculative genre tag searches. All you have to do is further filter the searches for anything else specific you might want or not want, choose whether you want on-going or complete fictions, pick which content warnings you're fine with. Filter as little or as much as you like! Though I'd say to filter a little bit if you want something specific, don't filter too much or you might end up missing on awesome novels just because the author forgot to tick a box or decided to put in a gore warning for that one scene where someone gets an arm cut out.
Fantasy - Historical Fantasy - Horror Fantasy - Horror - Sci-Fi - Horror Sci Fi
Final Notes
Don't filter for completed if you want finished books but are fine with ongoing series. Authors will usually make a listing for a series but not mark it as completed until the entire thing is done.
Some webnovel authors will self-publish. If you become their patron early on, you'll be getting cool stuff, helping them on their journey and getting a free book at the end. You might even get a character named after you!
Rate, review, all that, but please be kind. A lot of webnovel authors are very young and / or just starting out. If you see a story that you absolutely despise and / or can't read, it's best to move on and click the "don't show me this novel again" button than to rate them a 0.5* and ruin their day. Did you enjoy a story, however? Splurge. Make an account (or log in with google) and slap on that 5* advance review on it.
You're gonna see a lot of, hmm, particular tropes. Don't give up. Please. For the sake of all of us that don't write them and need more readers. I'm begging you.
To paraphrase something another user said on the RR discord: "You tend to find good writing and the same boring old ideas in mainstream fiction, while webfiction is filled with original ideas and worldbuilding but the writing is sometimes not the best". I think that sums it up pretty well. If you're looking for innovative ideas while seeing and helping writers grow at the same time, give webnovels a try.
I hope this guide was useful and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Storage Rental
Forget spring cleaning! New Year’s was the best time for me to clean up my life.
I remember when I realized that something in my life had to change.
I had woken up in my room surrounded by chocolate wrappers, an empty tub of ice cream, and a pile of tissues in the bin. My phone was on voicemail for the past two days, primarily because it was covered under a pile of my ex’s love letters and I didn’t feel like touching it.
The ice cream didn’t mix well with the wine I had last night, and I felt sick to my stomach. It was the second day I woke up like this this week. At 25, I didn’t see my life being this way. I thought my apartment would look like those in magazines, and that I’d have a hot guy by my side!
Despite my best efforts, I just had gotten dumped by my ex Cassius. It was a toxic relationship. My room was a mess and I looked like a totally depressed wreck of a girl. I had guzzled down way too much red wine while crying over him. My life needed an overhaul!
It was December 27th, shortly after Christmas. Though I’ve never done it before, I started to put together a New Year’s resolution to clean up my life and find a way to break through all the horrible energy of 2018.
Giving your life an overhaul sounds like a world of expenses and efforts, doesn’t it? Believe it or not, I only really needed good friends, an online therapist, and an on-demand storage service called Shed.
I realized what the root of many of my problems was pretty quickly.
At first, I didn’t really know what to do. Should I go to a therapist? Should I go to rehab? I took a look around my apartment. It was a mess, and I realized that a lot of the things that were becoming such a burden during my time living here all dealt with stuff.
My ex’s jacket was still on the floor. My kegerator was full of booze. My yoga mat had turned into a carpet. My calendar that once had my schedule planned to the minute was nothing more than a dusty piece of wall decor, crowded by a pile of CDs from Cassius.
My friends and I banded together to clean up my life in 13 different ways. Here are some ways you can do it, using my process as an example.
Toss out your ex’s stuff.
I called my friends Frank and Steve over. They know me as a tidy person, which is why they were totally stunned when they walked into my apartment. My relationship with Cassius left me (and my apartment) a wreck. They asked me if I needed help, and I quickly said yes.
We started to toss out his stuff. I chucked out his love notes, some of the CDs he bought, as well as some of the other goods that reminded me of him. Everything went well until we turned our attention to his crust punk vest.
Steve pointed out something: Cassius loved that vest, and he was probably going to come back from it eventually. It was priceless thanks to the limited edition signed patches on it. If we threw it out, he would be very likely to call the police over stolen property.
We didn’t want it in the apartment, but we didn’t know what to do. I then looked at Cassius’s Airpods, his designer boots, and the iPad he left behind. This was a serious issue!
Steve pointed out that he had a storage unit with Shed that we could use, and this ended up being our saving grace.
Shed has one of the coolest concepts I ever heard of. It’s on-demand storage facility that will pick up your items, catalogue them, store them, and also deliver them the very same day you need them for free. He owned a large garage-sized storage unit, and soon, we figured out what to do.
We used Steve’s Shed app to call them over. Within minutes, the crew catalogued all of Cassius’s goods and shipped them away to safety. Frank grabbed my phone then texted Cassius, telling him to claim his goods in 30 days or we’d throw them out.
I found a way to draw a line in the sand with Cassius. He couldn’t just store stuff with me anymore and there was no way to excuse him hanging around anymore.
Clear out all the useless junk in your home!
With my ex’s junk out of the way, I almost immediately felt my life getting a bit better. Not having to see his stuff everywhere kept the memories of us away, and in its own weird way, helped me feel better.
I then looked around my home once more. We started to work on another way to clean up my life: getting rid of all the things I didn’t use or enjoy.
We tossed out torn clothes, broken dishes, broken gaming consoles, and so much more. It was a haul! In total, we threw out around six trash bags of stuff. My studio apartment stopped looking cramped and started to look a lot better.
When I woke up, I realized I still had a lot of stuff that I wasn’t sure what to do with. I used these items a little bit, but not enough to have them constantly out and about. (Looking at you, Mr. Breadmaker.)
Though it was great to have Cassius’s things stored in Steve’s storage, I realized that it was time to get my own. Storage through Shed would give me a healthy amount of time and space to figure out what I should do with each item—and also clear room in my apartment.
Before my best friends showed up, I ordered some storage space from Shed and got them to pick up a bunch of my old DJ gear. My room immediately looked a lot better.
Put all your “vice” items away.
I know that my drinking is a byproduct of my relationship with Cassius, and that I typically won’t drink if I don’t see things around me that remind me of drinking. The best way to break the bad habit, I figured, would be to develop an “out of sight, out of mind” attitude.
When Shed’s people arrived, I asked them to pick up my kegerator, my bar kit, my bartending books, and the home bar I built for the parties Cassius wanted to throw at my place. As they left, I realized that drinking just became a lot harder.
Clear your mind with regular therapy.
Though cleaning my home took a lot of work and accomplished a lot, everything wasn’t alright. It still hurt. I was still grieving my breakup, craving beer the moment I woke up, and feeling pretty anxious. Cleaning up my life meant that I would have to get someone who could clean up my mind, too.
Knowing that, I booked an appointment with a therapist. We spent the day talking, and I’m currently getting my treatment for depression. It’s really helping me move on.
Take time to give your apartment a serious scrub-down.
Now that all the extra goods were gone, my place was remarkably easy to clean up. I called my friends over to help. Within a couple of hours, we were able to vacuum, sweep, dust, and organize all three rooms. My apartment looked good as new, and more importantly, also smelled great once again.
There is serious truth to the health benefits of keeping a clean home. Frank, who has pretty bad allergies, looked pretty relieved once this task was through. It was now a healthier environment for everyone.
Clean up your finances.
I’ll admit it: Cassius put a serious toll on my personal finances. Steve was the one who pointed out that I wasn’t able to pay for pizza delivery, and well, I ended up spilling the beans. Thankfully, Steve worked in finance and was able to help out.
We put together a plan to pay down debt, improve my credit score, and also avoid late fees. Oh, and we also got Cassius off my phone plan, because he really should learn to stop being a leech.
Believe it or not, having a clean home made it easier to focus on the financials. There were just fewer distractions along the way.
Pick up a side gig.
Even with all the sweeping changes that I was making, Cassius still was getting free rent in my mind. Everyone knew he was bad for me, but I didn’t want to fully let go quite yet. Eventually, it came to a head with my therapist who mentioned that it could be something to do with my schedule.
I started to take a look at getting gigs playing music at parties. I started to get extra work! Every time I’d have a gig, I’d ask Shed to bring my gear the day before. The day after, it’d go right back to Shed. It was a great system that helped me earn money without losing space.
Give your social media a scrub.
While browsing the world of Instagram, I came across Cassius posting something about us. Almost immediately, I unfollowed him. Then, I realized that I probably had 50 other people from his toxic crowd with access to my social media.
I looked in my inbox, and was already getting some really intrusive questions from his friends. Unfollow, block, unfollow, block. Deleting my public trainwreck of a breakup post was a must, too. There was a lot of work to do.
After about an hour of unfollowing and scrubbing, my social media accounts had fewer followers—but it paid off by having less stress.
Clean up your health habits.
Cassius was not the healthiest person out there, and it wasn’t just his excessive drinking that made him awful. He ate poorly, his hobbies were toxic, and honestly, he didn’t really even respect my need for healthy habits.
I looked through my kitchen cupboards and threw out all the food he’d normally be trying to shove down my throat. I called my friends from my old weight loss group, and we all went out grocery shopping together. My kitchen was full of foods ready for clean eating, and no soda was visible in my home.
The moment I promised myself to stick to clean eating, I ordered my old food processor home from Shed. I forgot how much I love my sweet potato purees!
While you’re at it, clean out your subscriptions.
Cleaning has a wild way of gaining momentum. This even spread to my email, which I actually only recently remembered having. It’s true. My breakup so deeply affected me, I didn’t check my email for a week!
My inbox was flooded with stuff and reminders of all the little subscriptions I had. News updates I didn’t need, weird little ads for things I no longer wanted, and litter that got rid of my mind’s focus—it was just too much. I cleared out the subscriptions I no longer used.
While it was a little work, by the end of my cleaning binge, I saved about $50 on needless subscriptions that I no longer used. It was a nice chunk of change.
Give your social circle a trim, too.
Cassius called within two weeks, asking for his stuff back. Admittedly, I was tempted. I didn’t want him to stay gone. I still cared about him. I set up a time, called my friends, and then got Shed to drop off his goods.
When he came by, Frank and Steve wouldn’t leave my side. We handed him his stuff. He looked around the apartment, which now bore a striking resemblance to how it looked prior to us dating. He asked to come back, and I told him to get lost.
After that night, Frank and Steve helped me prune my address book. My life finally felt together again.

How to Win Some Local Customers Back from Amazon this Holiday Season
Posted by MiriamEllis
Your local business may not be able to beat Amazon at the volume of their own game of convenient shipping this holiday season, but don’t assume it’s a game you can’t at least get into!
This small revelation took me by surprise last month while I was shopping for a birthday gift for my brother. Like many Americans, I’m feeling growing qualms about the economic and societal impacts of putting my own perceived convenience at the top of a list of larger concerns like ensuring fair business practices, humane working conditions, and sustainable communities.
So, when I found myself on the periphery of an author talk at the local independent bookstore and the book happened to be one I thought my brother would enjoy, I asked myself a new question:
“I wonder if this shop would ship?”
There was no signage indicating such a service, but I asked anyway, and was delighted to discover that they do. Minutes later, the friendly staff was wrapping up a signed copy of the volume in nice paper and popping a card in at no extra charge. Shipping wasn’t free, but I walked away feeling a new kind of happiness in wishing my sibling a “Happy Birthday” this year.
And that single transaction not only opened my eyes to the fact that I don’t have to remain habituated to gift shopping at Amazon or similar online giants for remote loved ones, but it also inspired this article.
Let’s talk about this now, while your local business, large or small, still has time to make plans for the holidays. Let’s examine this opportunity together, with a small study, a checklist, and some inspiration for seasonal success.
What do people buy most at the holidays and who’s shipping?
According to Statista, the categories in the following chart are the most heavily shopped during the holiday season. I selected a large town in California with a population of 60,000+, and phoned every business in these categories that was ranking in the top 10 of Google’s Local Finder view. This comprised both branded chains and independently-owned businesses. I asked each business if I came in and purchased items whether they could ship them to a friend.
Category
% Offer Shipping
Notes
Clothing
80%
Some employees weren’t sure. Outlets of larger store brands couldn’t ship. Some offered shipping only if you were a member of their loyalty program. Small independents consistently offered shipping. Larger brands promoted shopping online.
Electronics
10%
Larger stores all stressed going online. The few smaller stores said they could ship, but made it clear that it was an unusual request.
Games/Toys/Dolls etc.
25%
Large stores promote online shopping. One said they would ship some items but not all. Independents did not ship.
Food/Liquor
20%
USPS prohibits shipping alcohol. I surveyed grocery, gourmet, and candy stores. None of the grocery stores shipped and only two candy stores did.
Books
50%
Only two bookstores in this town, both independent. One gladly ships. The other had never considered it.
Jewelry
60%
Chains require online shopping. Independents more open to shipping but some didn’t offer it.
Health/Beauty
20%
With a few exceptions, cosmetic and fitness-related stores either had no shipping service or had either limited or full online shopping.
Takeaways from the study
Most of the chains promote online shopping vs. shopping in their stores, which didn’t surprise me, but which strikes me as opportunity being left on the table.
I was pleasantly surprised by the number of independent clothing and jewelry stores that gladly offered to ship gift purchases.
I was concerned by how many employees initially didn’t know whether or not their employer offered shipping, indicating a lack of adequate training.
Finally, I’ll add that I’ve physically visited at least 85% of these businesses in the past few years and have never been told by any staff member about their shipping services, nor have I seen any in-store signage promoting such an offer.
My overarching takeaway from the experiment is that, though all of us are now steeped in the idea that consumers love the convenience of shipping, a dominant percentage of physical businesses are still operating as though this realization hasn’t fully hit in… or that it can be safely ignored.
To put it another way, if Amazon has taken some of your customers, why not take a page from their playbook and get shipping?
The nitty-gritty of brick-and-mortar shipping
62% of consumers say the reason they’d shop offline is because they want to see, touch, and try out items. – RetailDive
There’s no time like the holidays to experiment with a new campaign. I sat down with a staff member at the bookstore where I bought my brother’s gift and asked her some questions about how they manage shipping. From that conversation, and from some additional research, I came away with the following checklist for implementing a shipping offer at your brick-and-mortar locations:
✔ Determine whether your business category is one that lends itself to holiday gift shopping.
✔ Train core or holiday temp staff to package and ship gifts.
✔ Craft compelling messaging surrounding your shipping offer, perhaps promoting pride in the local community vs. pride in Amazon. Don’t leave it to customers to shop online on autopilot — help them realize there’s a choice.
✔ Cover your store and website with messaging highlighting this offering, at least two months in advance of the holidays.
✔ In October, run an in-store campaign in which cashiers verbally communicate your holiday shipping service to every customer.
✔ Sweeten the offer with a dedication of X% of sales to a most popular local cause/organization/institution.
✔ Promote your shipping service via your social accounts.
✔ Make an effort to earn a mention of your shipping service in local print and radio news.
✔ Set clear dates for when the last purchases can be made to reach their destinations in time for the holidays.
✔ Coordinate with the USPS, FedEx, or UPS to have them pick up packages from your location daily.
✔ Determine the finances of your shipping charges. You may need to experiment with whether free shipping would put too big of a hole in your pocket, or whether it’s necessary to compete with online giants at the holidays.
✔ Track the success of this campaign to discover ROI.
Not every business is a holiday shopping destination, and online shopping may simply have become too dominant in some categories to overcome the Amazon habit. But, if you determine you’ve got an opportunity here, designate 2018 as a year to experiment with shipping with a view towards making refinements in the new year.
You may discover that your customers so appreciate the lightbulb moment of being able to support local businesses when they want something mailed that shipping is a service you’ll want to instate year-round. And not just for gifts… consumers are already signaling at full strength that they like having merchandise shipped to themselves!
Adding the lagniappe: Something extra
For the past couple of years, economists have reported that Americans are spending more on restaurants than on groceries. I see a combination of a desire for experiences and convenience in that, don’t you? It has been joked that someone needs to invent food that takes pictures of itself for social sharing! What can you do to capitalize on this desire for ease and experience in your business?
Cards, carols, and customs are wreathed in the “joy” part of the holidays, but how often do customers genuinely feel the enjoyment when they are shopping these days? True, a run to the store for a box of cereal may not require aesthetic satisfaction, but shouldn’t we be able to expect some pleasure in our purchasing experiences, especially when we are buying gifts that are meant to spread goodwill?
When my great-grandmother got tired from shopping at the Emporium in San Francisco, one of the superabundant sales clerks would direct her to the soft surroundings of the ladies’ lounge to refresh her weary feet on an automatic massager. She could lunch at a variety of nicely appointed in-store restaurants at varied prices. Money was often tight, but she could browse happily in the “bargain basement”. There were holiday roof rides for the kiddies, and holiday window displays beckoning passersby to stop and gaze in wonder. Great-grandmother, an immigrant from Ireland, got quite a bit of enjoyment out of the few dollars in her purse.
It may be that those lavish days of yore are long gone, taking the pleasure of shopping with them, and that we’re doomed to meager choosing between impersonal online shopping or impersonal offline warehouses … but I don’t think so.
The old Emporium was huge, with multiple floors and hundreds of employees … but it wasn’t a “big box store”.
There’s still opportunity for larger brands to differentiate themselves from their warehouse-lookalike competitors. Who says retail has to look like a fast food chain or a mobile phone store?
And as for small, independent businesses? I can’t open my Twitter feed nowadays without encountering a new and encouraging story about the rise of localism and local entrepreneurialism.
It’s a good time to revive the ethos of the lagniappe — the Louisiana custom of giving patrons a little something extra with their purchase, something that will make it worth it to get off the computer and head into town for a fun, seasonal experience. Yesterday’s extra cookie that made up the baker’s dozen could be today’s enjoyable atmosphere, truly expert salesperson, chair to sit down in when weary, free cup of spiced cider on a wintry day… or the highly desirable service of free shipping. Chalk up the knowledge of this need as one great thing Amazon has gifted you.
In 2017, our household chose to buy as many holiday presents as possible from Main Street for our nearby family and friends. We actually enjoyed the experience. In 2018, we plan to see how far our town can take us in terms of shipping gifts to loved ones we won’t have a chance to see. Will your business be ready to serve our newfound need?

Affiliate Marketing: How to Turn Product Recommendations Into Passive Income
Smart entrepreneurs running a thriving business know there’s always more they can do to make that business grow. One way of taking things to the next level is by finding an alternate stream of income. That doesn’t mean starting a second business, but finding ways to complement and grow the business you have by offering more value to your customers and followers.
If you aren’t participating in affiliate marketing, it’s time to consider taking advantage of this lucrative revenue stream.
What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is an online sales tactic that lets a product owner increase sales by allowing others targeting the same audience—“affiliates”—to earn a commission by recommending the product to others. At the same time, it makes it possible for affiliates to earn money on product sales without creating products of their own.
Simply put, affiliate marketing involves referring a product or service by sharing it on a blog, social media platforms, or website. The affiliate earns a commission each time someone makes a purchase through the unique link associated with their recommendation. Done well, this performance-based opportunity can go from side hustle to profitable business by netting you a healthy income.
How does affiliate marketing work?
To participate in an affiliate marketing program, you’ll need to take these five simple steps:
1. Find and join an affiliate program
2. Choose which offers to promote
3. Obtain a unique affiliate link for each offer
4. Share those links on your blog, social media platforms, or website
5. Collect a commission anytime someone uses your links to make a purchase
Commission rates vary dramatically, depending on the company and the offer. On the low end, you’ll earn about 5% of the sale but, with some arrangements, you can earn as much as 50%, usually when promoting a class or event. There are also affiliate marketing programs that provide a flat rate per sale instead of a percentage.
Benefits of the affiliate marketing model
Affiliate marketing offers several benefits to affiliates (i.e., you), one of which is its ease. Your side of the equation simply involves handling the “marketing” side of building and selling a product—educating customers. You don’t have to worry about the harder tasks, like developing, supporting, or fulfilling the offer.
Affiliate marketing is low risk. Since there’s no cost to join affiliate programs, you can start making money with an established affiliate product or service without any upfront investment. Affiliate marketing also can generate relatively passive income through commission—the ideal money-making scenario. Though initially you’ll have to invest time creating traffic sources, your affiliate links can continue to deliver a steady paycheck.
Finally, successful affiliate marketing offers the potential to significantly scale your earnings without hiring extra help. You can introduce new products to your current audience and build campaigns for additional products while your existing work continues to generate revenue in the background.
Before you get too excited, know that great affiliate marketing is built on trust. While seemingly there are an endless number of products or services to promote, it’s best to only highlight those you personally use or would recommend. Even when a product interests you or fits within an existing hobby, becoming a great marketer for that product takes a lot of work.
How to find affiliate programs
If you’re wondering how to get your feet wet in affiliate marketing, you’ve got a few options. Not every company offers affiliate programs—some businesses manage their own affiliate programs while others use an affiliate network.
An easy way to find affiliate programs is to visit an affiliate marketplace or platform. Browse your niche to find top performing affiliate platforms. Here are some of the most popular:
· AffiliateNetwork
· AvantLink
· CJ by Conversant
· ClickBank
· FlexOffers
· LinkConnector
· RevenueWire
· ShareASale
Another option is to visit the websites of the products and services you use and like to see if they have an affiliate program. Large companies often have programs they promote on their site, such as Amazon Associates or the Shopify Affiliate Program.
You also can take a more direct approach. Reach out to the owner of a great product you come across and see if they offer an affiliate marketing program. If they don’t, they might be happy to set up an arrangement with you, such as offering you a special coupon code to share with your followers. The best deals often are found when you’re the first to inquire and have a relevant distribution channel, such as approaching the seller of a new fitness product if you’re a health and wellness blogger.
Affiliate marketing programs will have terms of service you need to follow, so read the fine print. For example, your link usually will have a cookie with a specified timeframe, and some programs don’t allow you to purchase pay-per-click ads using the product or company’s name.
Choosing your first affiliate program
As you brainstorm products or browse through affiliate platforms, the most important criteria to keep in mind is that the product should be aligned with your audience, or the audience you hope to build. Ask yourself, is it something your target audience would find valuable? Does it fit with your area of expertise?
A food blogger probably wouldn’t promote beauty products, for example. A wide range of other products would make more sense, such as cookware, meal kits, gourmet ingredients, or even aprons.
Also make sure the product or service you’re promoting is a fit for the platform you’re promoting it on. For example, home decor and clothing are well suited to image-heavy platforms like Instagram. However, if you’re promoting more in-depth purchases, like software, your review may convert better on longer-form platforms, like a blog or YouTube.
Creating a plan to promote your affiliate offer
As we mentioned earlier, affiliate marketing revenue eventually can become a form of passive income, but you still have to do some heavy lifting up front. The success of your program will depend on the quality of your review.
To create a good review, it’s best to get personal. Share your experience in your blog, social media post, or video. If you’re writing a personal review, give a candid opinion based on your experience with and knowledge of the product. The more open you are, the more authentic you will be. People will be more comfortable following your advice if they feel they can trust you.
Trust is a key factor in your affiliate marketing efforts, because people need to trust you enough to act on your recommendations. The level of trust you’ll need to make affiliate sales depends on your industry and the products you’re recommending—for example, it takes more trust to be an effective affiliate for a $1,000 course than it does for a $20 t-shirt.
Beyond just sharing your experiences, you can build trust by limiting the number of affiliates you promote, or by only becoming an affiliate for products you personally use, and sticking to your area of expertise. For example, people trust my recommendations for Canadian financial apps, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to have much luck as a Sephora affiliate. —Desirae Odjick, founder of Half Banked
Talk to a product expert
Another option is interviewing others who use the product or service, or even interviewing the person who makes or sells it. This can give your review more depth, creating a narrative for the reader.
Create a product tutorial
While your success with affiliate marketing can depend on the overall size of your following, another way to drive higher-converting traffic is by providing a tutorial on the offer. People often perform “how to” searches on Google, such as “how to save money for college” or “how to decorate a laundry room.” If you offer a tutorial that solves a searcher’s problem and clearly showcases the value of the product, your referrals will make more sense in context and you’ll provide the customer with a stronger incentive to purchase the product you’re recommending.
Find relevant search terms
If you’re promoting an offer through a blog post, research which keywords someone might use in a search engine to find an answer to a related problem.Google Ads Keyword Planner is a good tool that can help. (It’s free to use, but you’ll need to create an account.)
Consider your angle
Depending on your offer, figure out how much energy you should invest in instructional or tutorial content, which is often a natural lead-in to someone trying a product for themselves. For example, you could record a video of yourself using and getting the most out of a physical product, or showing off the benefits of a digital product, like software. Unboxing posts are popular, so if you receive the product in the mail, document your experience opening it up.
Set your distribution strategy
Once you’ve written your promotional content, share it on your website or social media platforms. If you have an email list, you can create an email marketing campaign. And be sure to have an affiliate marketing hub on your website with a Resources page where you share a quick list of all of the tools you use and love.
Try offering a bonus
Sometimes marketers promote their affiliate programs by offering bonuses to anyone who purchases the offer. For example, you could give a free ebook you wrote to any follower who makes a purchase. Promotions like this encourage customers to buy by sweetening the deal. They’re especially persuasive if the bonus you offer is something you normally sell, because then shoppers can see its actual dollar value added value right on your site.
You can find several examples of affiliate bonuses in action when business coach Marie Forleo opens her popular B-School for entrepreneurs each year. To encourage sign-ups through her affiliate link, Laura Belgray, Forleo’s own copywriter, offers a one-on-one copywriting session as a bonus. Marketing coach Amy Porterfield adds a bonus bundle, with an invitation to one of her live events, access to a private Facebook group, Q&A sessions, and a variety of downloads. Adding a bonus can be a good way to stand out if several other affiliates are promoting the same product.
Keep things legal and above board
Don’t forget to disclose to followers that your post contains affiliate links. For one thing, it’s required by the FTC. But explaining the reason for your affiliation also can help you connect with your audience. For example, the financial independence bloggers at Frugalwoods offer this disclosure: “Frugalwoods sometimes publishes affiliate endorsements and advertisements, which means that if you click on a link and buy something, Frugalwoods might receive a percentage of the sale, at no extra cost to you. We only write about, and promote, products that we believe in. We promise not to tell you about stuff that's dumb.”
If you need help figuring out what language to use in a disclaimer, it’s worth taking time to consult a lawyer.
Examples of businesses using affiliate marketing
Looking at some of the companies that participate in affiliate marketing will provide you with inspiration—as well as proof that this is a legit and lucrative revenue stream.
Wirecutter
Wirecutter, a site promoting gear and gadgets—from kitchen tools to travel gear—that was acquired by The New York Times in 2016, says it only makes recommendations after “vigorous reporting, interviewing, and testing by teams of veteran journalists, scientists, and researchers.”
BuzzFeed
BuzzFeed Reviews started out as a gift guide and expanded into reviews of various product categories. What makes the site unique is that it covers a variety of ordinary items, giving top picks at three different price points. BuzzFeed’s reviews are quite thorough, which provides lots of value to the reader. Here’s arecent post on toilet paper and another on women’s white t-shirts.
Ready to get started with affiliate marketing?
Earning money with affiliate marketing programs can be a rewarding way to add a new revenue stream without taking on too much risk. All it will cost you is your time. By investing the hours upfront, you can continue to reap the rewards.

Killer Retail Marketing Tips to Drive Sales Year Round
There are two types of people in this world: those that love to shop, and those that hate to shop. I would say I’m more of a hater than a lover myself, but we all have to do it from time to time.
In this consumer-driven world we live in, there are messages left, right, and sideways trying to convince us to buy one product or another. This is what makes retail marketing so darn challenging. Retailers are often fighting for attention to get prospects to hit the “buy” button or come to their brick and mortar storefront and swipe their cards. And with such a big shift to ecommerce dominating the retail space, those who are managing storefronts may be suffering.
According to Big Commerce, 51% of Americans prefer to shop online, and almost everyone – 96% – has made an online purchase in their life (not surprising to me!). So if you are retailer with a store presence, how can you get shoppers to come by? The old strategies of simply having a good location or putting up flyers or ads in your local newspaper aren’t going to cut it anymore.
Well, fear not! We have 11 powerful retail marketing tips to help you increase your retail sales, both online and offline, starting with…
#1: Run Beautifully Executed Google Shopping Campaigns
With over 3.5 billion searches occurring on Google each day, it’s no secret that people use Google to shop. Between searching for product reviews and store locations and the convenience of ordering online, the most powerful search engine has become a digital shopping tour guide for most.
This is why retail marketers absolutely must be capitalizing on Google shopping campaigns. Google shopping campaigns allow retail marketers to sell their products directly through the SERPs, so whether you have a storefront or not, these campaigns are worth investing in. While some of you readers may already be running Google shopping campaigns, here are some additional strategies to capitalize on your SERP sales…
Organize Shopping Campaigns by Best-Selling Items
When you’re configuring your Shopping campaigns make sure your products of similar value are grouped together so you can easily allocate and adjust budgets in a logical manner. Grouping together your best sellers will help you capitalize on online sales.
Want a more in-depth look at Google Shopping? Download our free guide and learn how to build super profitable campaigns!
Ensure Your Ad Images are High-Quality and Crawlable
This tip might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised at how often marketers overlook the quality of their ad images, which is your first chance to grab the potential buyer. So, what makes a good quality image? One with little grain, fine detail, and a simple white background so that searchers can focus on the product that’s being sold.
It is also critical to follow Google’s guidelines when configuring your images. For instance, for non-apparel products Google advises using an image that is at least 100 X 100 pixels, and for apparel items at least 250 X 250 pixels. The image URL needs to start with http or https, and use an encoded URL that complies with RFC 2396 or RFC 1738.
For more information on specific technical requirements to ensure your images appear beautifully on the SERPs and are able to be crawled by search bots, check out this resource.
Include Merchant Promotions and Product Reviews
With retail marketing being one of the most competitive industries to be in, it could not be more critical to gain votes of confidence on your products through a sea of 5-star reviews. Of course, your products actually need to be well-received to earn these justly, but assuming you do have items on the market with great reviews, you should absolutely be showing these reviews off.
Why? Because reviews drive purchases. This isn’t revolutionary! In fact, 88% of consumers say they trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. So, how can one take advantage of reviews within their shopping campaigns? Here are a couple ways…
Utilize Merchant Promotions: This will allow you to add tags like “Special offer” to your shopping ads. Set-up requires a few steps including filling out the merchant promotions interest form and either using the +PROMOTION tool or setting up a promotion feed. Follow the steps here to get your promotions approved.
Configure Product Ratings: You’ve all seen the little star rating underneath products on the SERPs. Don’t you want these for your ads? You need to gain at least 50 reviews on one of Google’s third-party approved sites to ensure the reviews show. Check out the approved third-party sources here, where you should be actively seeking reviews to ensure they appear in the SERPs.
#2: Give Shoppers a Reason to Visit Your Store
Currently I’m cozied up in my pajamas in my South Boston condo watching as another New England snowstorm buries me into my couch even further. Do you really think I’m trekking through the snow to make a purchase in your storefront while I could just browse for a similar product on Amazon Prime, and have it at my doorstep by tomorrow afternoon?
The convenience of online shopping has been hard on many retail marketers operating physical storefronts. Yet, many still do prefer shopping for items in person because you have the ability to see and touch items and try things on without going through the hassle of shipping back items that don’t fit.
Unfortunately, these benefits alone aren’t always enough to get customers to leave their Netflix at home. So, what to do? Well, retail marketers desperate for more storefront traffic need to start giving their customers a reason to come in. Perhaps you have a special in-store discount for shoppers. Lululemon is constantly convincing me to come by their stores with their free yoga classes. Check out the Facebook post below.
What a great way to incentivize shoppers to come into the store for a free and very on-brand offering, where they then will of course be surrounded by all of the tempting new yoga clothes for sale. You should try the same, and make sure to promote your offerings on your social networks to spread the news.
#3: Use Social Media Targeting Capabilities to Your Advantage
You likely already have some form of social media presence, but if you haven’t yet invested in the world of social media advertising you are surely missing out. Why? Because platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter make it absurdly easy to find and get in front of the people most likely to buy your products.
Let’s run through an example to see how detailed you can actually get. Let’s say you sell wedding dresses in the city of Boston. You have a pretty clear idea of who your target audience is based on your product and the prices of your dresses so you decide to configure a campaign. You start off my targeting women, who make up 99.9% of your customer base. Then you set up the age ranges between 24 and 40 years old, since the style of your dresses cater most to this age range.
Next is location – you type in the zip code to show your ads to Facebook visitors in a 25-mile radius. Are you set? Actually, no. You can dig into various categories and sub-categories to target engaged shoppers, interested in marriage, weddings, women’s clothing, and dresses. Perhaps you narrow your audience even more by targeting friends of people who already liked your page.
Basically, the possibilities are quite endless with the detailed targeting you can do so make sure to get on these platforms to start reaching your audience faster on social!
#4: Don’t Forget to Be Locally Relevant
Whether or not you are operating a retail storefront, if you can be locally relevant to each audience this is going to help your chances of winning them over. People want to feel like they’re part of their community, and if your brand blends in seamlessly with their home then they are more likely to draw an emotional attachment to your business.
There are a few key ways to ensure you’re being as locally relevant as possible…
Geotargeting
I touched on this a bit in the tip above, but the more granular and local you can get with your targeting, the easier it will be to appear locally relevant. Use geotargeting on platforms like Google Ads (formerly known as AdWords), Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc., to reach the locals.
Ad Copy and Imagery
Fill your ad copy and images with local appeal – for example, by taking product shots in scenic local parks or even selling local products. Take this example from a design and décor shop in Southie called Neatly Nested. They designed a Southie mug for locals to enjoy, and it was such a hit that they had to order more!

Last February 21, as soon as my exams were over, I headed to World Trade Center in Manila to go to the Big Bad Wolf Books Sale! Yes, despite having almost 3 days of sleepless nights, I went to it because during that day because it was the only time I was free.
Disclaimer: I don’t have a lot of pictures, because I was too busy book shopping lol
The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is a huge international book fair that travels around the globe, and it’s actually their first time to visit the Philippines. With around 2 weeks stay in the country, they even had their doors open for 24 hours! Yes, 24 hours! You can go any time of the day that’s the most convenient for you. That is why I was able to go to the book fair from 8pm until 11pm that day. I would have stayed longer if it weren’t because of me being exhausted already form my exams, adding the exhaustion I experienced while walking around the venue, and that I had an 8am class the other day.
Let’s just say this book fair is a bookworm’s 7th heaven. SO MANY BOOKS IN SUCH A HUGE ROOM! AND SO LITTLE TIME TO BROWSE THROUGH EVERYTHING! Even though I prepared for my trip by listing down all the books I plan to buy since I had watched my bookworm friends’ IG stories, all that preparation vanished into thin air as soon as I stepped inside the venue. I mean, come on! How can you not go crazy in this room?!
My bookworm friends gave me a lot of tips also on what to do in the fair, and I tried to follow them as much as possible while I was inside. The first thing I did was grab a pushcart (yes, I always use a pushcart to book fairs) and go immediately to the first section I found. My friends told me that I should just keep shooting books in my cart when I find them, because I won’t be able to see them again if I come back for them in a few minutes. So basically my cart was already filled just an hour in. But I started taking out books from my cart as time went on, because I had a 50/50 decision about them.
My favorite part was finding the really great books in the discarded piles! That was the real treasure hunting! All I did was walk by the area, and then my eyes immediately zoom in into a box or a person leaving behind that most precious book. I didn’t hesitate anymore and just grabbed it in my cart. That was another tip I got – make sure to visit the discarded books section.
Not to mention I also ran into 3 of my med school batchmates during that time. Like them, we were also on the look out for medical dictionaries and other medical books, but sadly, we didn’t find that much. And the only ones we found were so freaking expensive, I doubt that they were still within the 60-80% discount. So we all stuck together during the remaining part of the trip until all of us were tired and had aching necks and feet.
So after 4 roundtrips around the venue and many discarded books later, I finally was able to get 7 precious books! I got back home in Cavite around 11:30pm, but I was still able to unload my books and show my purchase through my IG stories (if you were able to watch it). So here’s my BBWPH book haul!
I was able to get these books for only P1400 ($28)! I usually spend a minimum of P2000 ($40) at the regular book fair I go to every September, even with the discounted prices. But the sale here is so ridiculously low that your money can get you a lot of books! I actually brought extra money, but I was glad to only spend this much! My wallet is thanking me (a little)
Written in My Own’ Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon – I have the MMPB versions of the first 3 books in this series, but I just had to get this one even though I’m still ages away from this part of the series!
A Trail of Fire by Diana Gabaldon – this is an Outlander novella.
Golden Son by Pierce Brown – now I need to have the first, third, and fourth books!
Sins and Needles by Karina Halle
Wild Lavender by Belinda Alexandra
The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon – I already have the first book of this, so I didn’t think twice to get this from the discarded section
Peanuts Classic Comics from 1959 – 1963
Overall, I had a lot of fun but tiring time going to this book fair, and my trip wasn’t a waste because I was able to snag some really cool finds! My only comment about this fair that even with the wide array of choices and slightly “organized” sectioning, it was still hard to find some really good books because of the backlog. I understand that it was also partly the customers’ fault, but it would be so much better if all sections were contained separately, and not totally messy so that more shoppers can get the books that they want.
Here’s to hoping that they come back again next year, because I am definitely going back!
To my Filipino readers, were you able to go to the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale? Tell me your experiences in the comments section!
My Big Bad Wolf Books PH Experience Last February 21, as soon as my exams were over, I headed to World Trade Center in Manila to go to the Big Bad Wolf Books Sale!

Get More Social Media Traffic Using These 7 Free Tools 2020
Do you find it hard to get traffic from the social web/ social media? Actually Social algorithms are tough, they're getting harder and harder to get more traffic from social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and every other social site out there in the market. Hi readers in this article, we are going to know how to get more social traffic for our business using these seven free tools in the online market. How many of you guys are getting little to no traffic from Facebook, twitter, linkedin e.t.c… you can see that digital marketing agencies will make use of the following tools according to their requirements. Either way the tools I'm gonna teach you today won't just help you get more traffic from Facebook but they'll help you get more traffic from all the major social sites. The first tool I have for you guys is an easy one.
Hootsuite, it allows you to schedule your social content out. With Hootsuite not only can you share content on all social sites with ease and a few clicks but you can also schedule out your content many months in advance. This is important because most people share their content once on social sites like Twitter, but if you share your content on Twitter six times in a year that same piece of content, you'll roughly get two to three times more traffic. It's a simple hack, it works well and you should be doing that. Remember when you share your content most of the people won't see it, so there's nothing wrong with sharing that content three, four, five, six, seven times throughout the year. I usually do that same piece of content once every two months or roughly six times a year. The next tool I have for you is,
ManyChat Although you're struggling to get traffic from Facebook, ManyChat will solve that. It's a chatbot tool, leverages Facebook Messenger and what you'll find is the click through and the open rates are ridiculous. It beats out email. If you want easy traffic, leverage ManyChat. What it'll do is when people come to your website they can subscribe to you through Facebook Messenger and then when you have a blog post or message you can pushit out through ManyChat. You'll get open rates above 60% and you'll get click through rates well above 30, 40, 50%. The numbers are crazy, over time it drops down, but even when it drops down you'll still see your click through rate above 30%. It's that effective. The third tool I have for you is,
Buzzsumo You end up writing content, when you write content a lot of times you share it on the social web and no one wants to like or comment or engage with it. But with Buzzsumo it'll show you all the other popular articles within your space and all the ones that aren't popular. Look at the topics that are popular, write more of that on your blog, promote those on Facebook,on LinkedIn, on Twitter and again you'll get more traffic because you're only writing stuff that people wanna read about and see versus just writing whatever you wanna write about. The fourth free tool I have for you is SocialBlade.
SocialBlade I know it's that site that everyone knows when it comes to YouTube but they do more than YouTube, but they do more than YouTube. They also do Instagram, they do Twitter, they do all the major social sites out there. What's cool about SocialBlade is it'll show you your subscriber growth over time as well as how much content you're pushing out. It'll help you find patterns on hey if I put out five tweets, do I get more followers when I only put versus if I only put out one tweet. Or on YouTube how many more subscribers am I getting per day based on how much content I'm producing. This will help optimize how much content you should be creating to get the maximum amount of subscribers, fans and followers. The next tool I want you to use is,
Hello Bar You're probably wondering what Hello Bar have to do with social media? Hello Bar helps you collect emails from your website. Here's the thing. In the first hour that you're posting content on the social web, any social site, if it does really well the chances are it'll go viral. Use Hello Bar to collect emails from your blog or your website. When you collect these emails, then when you push out content on the social web, you send out an email blast to all your email subscribers saying "Hey, check out this post on Facebook or LinkedIn or Twitter." That'll help you get way more retweets, likes, shares and that'll make the post go viral. The sixth tool I have for you is Subscribers.
Subscribers is similar to Hello Bar but instead of helping you collect emails it helps you collect browser notifications subscribers. That way when people are browsing your site on Chrome they can click one button, subscribe and you can push out a notification and let all these people know when you have new content that just came out and you can even push them to the social sites. That way when it gets released in the first hour, you'll get more likes, shares and comments. Again this will help you go more viral. The seventh free tool I Have for you is Zoho Social.
Zoho Social makes it easy to work with your team members and on top of that they help you research keywords. By using Zoho Social It'll help you determine what keyword you are targeting when you're going after these social sites, because if you're using the wrong keywords in your titles, descriptions, throughout the whole text you'll find that not many people will see it. A lot of people are doing searches on these social sites. A lot of people use Twitter search. Use the right keywords, you'll get more traffic. So that's it, thank you for watching. If you enjoyed the video like it, share it, tell other people about it, subscribe to the channel. Of course if you need help with your social media marketing check out my ad agency Neil Patel Digital. If you are looking for the best social media services in USA and Canada, i will suggest you to go with SeoTeam247.com, which is really the best Digital marketing Agency in USA and Canada, provides World class digital marketing services for its clients.
