𝐔nderrated 𝐃ark 𝐀cademia 𝐌ovies — 1
[Part 2]
Here's a small collection of (some of) my favourite dark academic movies that I rarely see people in here talking about. Most of them are based on true stories of actual historical artists because I am clearly a sucker for talented people that have been dead for decades now. Enjoy, my people.
LITTLE ASHES (2008) - About the young life and loves of artist Salvador Dalí, filmmaker Luis Buñuel and writer Federico García Lorca. // Basically an entire movie of Dalí (played by Robert Pattinson, my babe) gay panicking over Frederico. Very academic, summer vibes and comfortable to watch. Juicy aesthetic! The critics don't seem to have liked it very much, since it got 24% on Rotten Tomatoes, but we don't care about 'em, do we? Go watch!
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING (2003) - This film tells a story about the events surrounding the creation of the painting "Girl With A Pearl Earring" by 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. A young peasant maid working in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer becomes his talented assistant and the model for one of his most famous works. // Filled with a handsome cast and great aesthetic, this movie may bore you a bit with its lack of energy, like said by the critics, but will most likely keep you focused until the end (which is a bit frustrating as its finest.) Starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth (I've got to stop having this DILF obsession, ugh) as the main "couple", the artist and the muse; and Cillian Murphy (*screaming internally*) as the charming almost-boyfriend. I love it. Gorgeous Scarlett, handsome DILFs, AND ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC PAINTINGS OF THE WORLD'S HISTORY (what are you waiting for?)!
THE DREAMERS (2003) - A young American studying in Paris in 1968 strikes up a friendship with a French brother and sister. Set against the background of the '68 Paris student riots. // MY CINEMATOGRAPHIC SOULMATE! Mixing twincest, sensuality, the 60s France and a lot of literature and cinema, The Dreamers seems to transfigure into a safe and comfortable place in your head, once it starts, you don't want it to ever end. Having Louis Garrel (I don't think I need to comment on this) in the cast already was a great motive for me to watch it, yet his character was not my favourite. Definitely, the best one, for me, is Isabelle (we're almost namesakes, see? Isabelle and Isabela... sorry I'll stop) who is played by the dizzyingly marvellous Eva Green, and turned into my OG kin, we share the same brain I swear. Critics gave a 60%, which I call bullshit. Fuck you, critics (now go back to licking that paedophile supporter Tarantino man's balls.)
Where to watch: MOVIES2WATCH This free platform has all of the movies listed above, available for online streaming and download, also most of the movies have subtitles available in an extensive list of languages. This is NOT SPONSORED (obviously), just wanted to share this amazing site!

Her new era is in the works with a different animation style and will soon transition the old Dittfach somewhere in early March 2023 right after the Subscriber Marathon on YouTube.
Dittfach moves forward with a l*wd incident after a massive cease and desist request for the illustrative digital art, in connection to a controversial fictional character under her same name without a consent in s*xual crimes per physical interview with Smosh in 2021. The only animated and gaming personality changes at a single time from scratch.
With the inspiration and reference from the internet broadcasting video game platform Twitch, Dittfach has its own take with the YouTube viewers to play games with your chat typing controls featuring the previous and recent gaming releases of Nintendo. Other features in Game Shows, Speedruns and more is also in the works during an event. This was now so-called "YouTube Plays Pokémon" and was managed personally by herself the said same name, as part of its own Sub-a-thon event.
For those who have not aware, "Twitch Plays Pokémon" acts as players in chat like a robot to type in one of the original game's 8 command buttons with your keyboard to move the main character in the game and was originated in mid-February 2014. Players must beat the whole game in participation and the stream will continue within the 24-hour period. But there is a catch in perspective, the gameplay may take longer to complete and some internet players as chat controllers have now been taking the hardest consequences in the game.
Dittfach's Sub-a-thon is available for a limited time with your Cash Donations through Super Chats (mostly in any minimum amount of U$D10 [PHP575]) or become a member by adding more time to keep the event going until the countdown timer runs out before the new era starts for as low as U$D5 per month (PHP290) by simply click the "Join" button, next to Subscribe button in regular. Heroes of the Enlightenment – Time Journal
Introduction
What is stuff we value a lot about in the modern world? freedom, to enjoy ourselves, to argue and discuss, to express our view, to find things out, to read and write, and the science and technology that made these possible. I’d like to share the amazing trips I took to visit some of the heroes of the enlightenment who changed how we live life now. None of this happened by accident these freedoms were one from courage and vision, in an extraordinary period of human history. It began in 17th century Europe which was called the Age of Enlightenment. A little more than a century, religious faith yielded to reasoned argument and the power of aristocracy gave way to the power of knowledge. In this journal, we will talk about the trips I took to the 3 great enlightenment innovators. Isaac Newton, who opened up the knowledge to everybody by inventing modern science. Voltaire who had been known for his writings that completely inspired literacy and the different forms of historical writings. And Erasmus Darwin whose discoveries deep underground mantid a direct challenge to the church's claim to truth.
Isaac Newton (December 25, 1642 – March 31, 1727)
In 1661, I visited a very good friend of mine in England, Isaac Newton. The founder of modern science which was to become the greatest challenge to the power of the church. When I met him at his Woolsthorpe Manor, he was very mad and furious. I didn’t understand why. He later told me that most of the people’s lives were based on obedience and belief. He never agreed on that, he felt that the information was procured not by daze confidence however by perception. He set down widespread principles for what we currently call science and one of those guidelines was that it was available to everyone. I was amazed to see how knowledgeable he was, I picked up a few concepts while at it. He later told me about the many theories he has including lights and color. “In the letter, it contained theories that light consists of deform rays, some of which are more than others: And Colors are affirmed to be not qualifications of light, derived from refractions of natural bodies” (A Letter of Mr. Isaac Newton, 2003). Newton’s method was to see things most people wouldn’t be able to see. One day we were sitting beneath this apple tree and a sudden thought was triggered. He watched an apple fall off the tree to the ground something he’s seen hundreds of times before, but this time was different. He questioned himself and was furious about why the apple always falls. I didn’t know how to help him since I was only majoring in cybersecurity. He was seeing things most people wouldn’t be able to see even if they tried. His brain was like no one else’s, quick at discovering things. He told me that instead of an empty space between the apple and the ground; he saw an active force pulling things towards the earth, the force of gravity. At the time, I didn’t understand any scientific thing he said, but once I left and visited my good friend Voltaire he had come up with the law of universal gravitation.
Voltaire (November 21, 1694 – May 30, 1778)
I started traveling again in the 1700s. I had visited Paris, France in 1718 to see the best-known play, the Sophocles' tragedy Oedipus. That’s where I first met Voltaire. I was amazed by his approach to tracing the movement of world human advancement by concentrating on social history and expressions of the human experience. Voltaire was a critic about the Bible and establish religions believing them to be the source of animosity between people. He had a lifetime passion for religious liberty and strongly believed that no one should be penalized by the government for their disposition. There was a multitude of economic and civic barriers against non-Catholics who also faced religious persecution and injustice. Voltaire had always come to me for advice since he hated fighting vigorously with society because they never listened to him. On a bright sunny day, we went for a walk in Toulouse. On the way we found a guy named Jean Calas getting tortured. This brought interest to Voltaire since he was all about criminal law reforms. “The panel reversed Calas’s conviction on March 9, 1765, and the government paid the family an indemnity” (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica). Voltaire valued the free flow of ideas and especially the ability to dissent. His published works often put them in the crosshairs of government sensors, and he risked his life on several occasions to disseminate his controversial works. “Voltaire was a prolific writer, producing more than 20,000 letters and over 2,000 books and pamphlets. Despite strict censorship laws, he frequently risked large penalties by breaking them and questioning the establishment” (Pettinger). I decided to stay with him until a major problem came his way. He was banished to England after being associated with a fight with a French aristocrat. The man utilized his riches to have him captured, and this would make Voltaire attempt and change the judicial system.
Erasmus Darwin (December 12, 1731 – April 18, 1802)
To finish up my trip I visited my dad’s friend, Darwin. He was one of the few people who were determined to do about anything. He was a doctor, poet, philosopher, and inventor. Darwin’s wide-raging interests would inspire him to mount the enlightenment ‘s ultimate challenge to the authority of the church. When I went over to Lichfield, England in 1778, he was trying to create a machine that can possibly copy from paper to paper. It didn’t take him long because he had other inventions in mind. I had lived with him for couple years because I was amazed to see the inventions that came to his mind! He was intrigued by enlightenment thinking and its application to reality. For Darwin, the key was to comprehend, oversee, and direct the quickly changing world. Inspired by his friends he recorded his ideas and inventions in a book called Common Place Book. A couple of ideas he drew out were new weaving machines which completely transformed the English textile industry. A new kind of toilet, one which Darwin notes won’t be annoying because it won’t smell. He was the first Briton to explicitly write about evolution. “His main prose on the topic appears in the first volume of Zoonomia in 1794” (Plant Morphology). In the book, he intended to characterize realities about creatures, to set out laws depicting natural life, and to catalog diseases with their medicines. In contrast to some contemporary doctors, Darwin supported dynamic mediation with drugs and mechanical devices. However, he later passed away due to Dysentery a serious illness. I couldn’t stand enduring all this pain, so I headed home to Gainesville, Virginia. I had an amazing trip and plan to go on another soon. Everyone should be able to learn more about these important people who has impacted our life completely.

Summary
- Sunday, 21st Pharast in the year 815 (Second Era). Late Spring.
- The party begin this session, still within the icy lair of the deceased Dragon Arauthator. Orcaheart, Bonecarver and the two tribal hunters thank the party for freeing them but have to rush off to catch up with the rest of the villagers who are fleeing to safety immediately.
- Having dispatched all the remaining Ice Trolls the party explore the cavern until they locate a small treasure pile frozen into the icy floor. The treasure is hacked and melted out and then a short rest is taken inside Leomond’s Tiny Hut, thanks to Trenchant. The newly acquired Bag Of Holding is used to carry the treasure hoard.
- Now recovered from the freezing cold, the party make their way out, climbing back to the upper level and reunite with Maccath The Crimson. They take a quantity of arcane books, stolen from the Hosttower of the Arcane Brotherhood many centuries ago by Arauthator.
- Leaving Oyaviggaton the party make their way back to their ship, the heavy snows limiting their vision. Halfway to their destination, they are suddenly attacked as large fury beasts lurch out from behind icy outcrops. Yetis!
- The party move to engage the two Yetis and one large Abominable Yeti. Sir Krondor and Naillae are paralysed by the Chilling Gaze of the beasts. Maccath The Crimson stays out of the battle, her arcane skills being more scholarly than combative. The beasts prove no match for the harden party and when Trenchant animates two of the smaller Yeti, whom are the first to be dispatched, to attack the larger Yeti, the battle is soon over.
- Arriving back at their ship, Frostskimmr, Captain Lerustah is surprised to the see the party back so soon but is relieved they have returned successful. Balin the Sea Wizard is overcome to see his lost friend Maccath alive and well. The party give orders to Captain Lerustah to set sail on to Delzimmer and Balin helps guide the ship out with a gentle breeze.
- Wealday, 3rd Gozran in the year 815 (Second Era). Early summer.
- After sailing a day and a half, as the ship is crossing deep waters, Balin becomes frantic with panic as he can sense something coming from the depths of the ocean towards the ship. Something very large. Balin summons a fierce gale of wind that pushes the ship beyond her limits, the cracking wood and bending masts of the ship threatening to break. The party and Captain Lerustah can’t get Balin to slow the winds down. Ragnar fetches the unaware book worm Maccath The Crimson to come topside and speak to Balin.
- After a quick and cryptic conversation she runs to the back of the ship looking out the back. Varis joins her and uses his Spyglass to look far behind the ship. He sees a large whale on the surface of the sea sprouting water from its blow hole. As Varis looks on his skin goes pale and sweat breaks out on his skin as he sees the water of the ocean, at least one hundred feet all around the whale, suddenly grow dark. The waters begin to churn and then large tentacles start to burst forth from the ocean all around the whale.
- Even without a Spyglass Maccath can see the gigantic tentacles raising up from the sea far behind their ship. She turns and shouts with undisguised fear, “Kraken!”
- Balin keeps the strong gale pushing the ship forward. Now Captain Lerustah doesn’t argue with the Sea Wizard, instead urging him to go faster. The crew start following the party’s orders and begin throwing anything non essential overboard to increase speed and also to reinforce any weak points on the ship, especially the bending masts that are close to breaking.
- As the ship speeds away unnaturally fast the tentacles of the Kraken easily and effortlessly drag the large whale down under the surface of the water for its next meal.
- Balin does not relent for another fifteen minutes and then finally slows the gale down to a safer speed, though the ship still sails unnaturally fast through the ocean. The next day and half is a tense one, with the party on constant watch for any sign of the Kraken and Balin refusing to sleep.
- Eventually the ship arrives at Delzimmer and a very tired but relived Balin helps Captain Lerustah guide the ship into the jetty of the Hosttower of the Arcane Brotherhood. The party accompany Maccath and Balin back to the Hosttower. The party agree to return all the stolen arcane books back to the Arcane Brotherhood, for no cost. Balin and the other wizards are most impressed with this generous offer and in return pledge the help of the Brotherhood for the alliance against the Cult.
- Maccath tells the party that she can create an Astral Interference that will stop the Draakhorn from being able to work but that the Cult would eventually determine her location and stop her, unless she were to be moving around somehow.
- Trenchant suggests that if she were to be on a moving ship that would confuse the efforts of the Cult to locate her. Maccath smiles and immediately asks the party permission to join their ship as a crew member, where she can conduct the ritual each day. The party agree and she states that she can begin the ritual from the next day, as she will need to organise a few items. The party have now stopped the ability of the Cult to gather more dragons to its army but having not dealt with the mission first, the party have inadvertently given the Cult a large number of dragons already which they will have to deal with later on.
- Returning to the Frostskimmer with their new crew member, the party give orders to Captain Lerustah to set sail for Phlan, the destination of the third and final mission from the Council Of Crescent Moon. The mission is to steal the treasure hoard of the Black Dragon Throstulgrael (“Velvet”) from its lair in the Twilight Marsh.
- The seven day voyage is uneventful except for the first time in weeks, the odd sensation that was felt each afternoon from the Draakhorn is now gone, thanks to the interference of Maccath’s ritual.
- Wealday, 10th Gozran in the year 815 (Second Era). Early summer.
- As the Frostskimmer is still ten minutes out of arriving at the port city of Phlan, Captain Lerustah calls over the party to him as he looks through his Spyglass.
- The banners of Cult Of The Dragon Queen now fly over the independent city state. Captain Lerustah asks whether to turn the ship around or continue. The party decide to keep going but in disguise.
- Captain Lerustah smiles and informs the party that this something they’ve done before. He orders his crew into action and soon the armoured Crescent Moon soldiers in their distinctive armour are hiding down below deck. All the flags and banners of Crescent Moon are removed and replaced with one of the smaller independent kingdoms from the far west. The large ballista is collapsed and covered with a large coloured sail and various barrels and boxes placed around it to hide it. All the sailors remove their normal red Crescent Moon uniforms and are soon wearing a random assortment of clothes and colours. The ship now longer resembles a naval war ship but now looks like a normal merchant ship.
- Captain Lerustah informs the party he has forged documents that prove they are a merchant vessel of the independent kingdom.
- As the ship approaches the port, the party also hide their weapons and cover themselves in colourful rags and outer clothing. The port is indeed under Cult control. At the jetty a Dragonsoul Officer of the Cult stands directing numerous Knights wearing black armour with fresh green paint smeared across their chest plates. Each Knight has a green scarf around the helmet and wears a green cape.
- Trenchant walks off the ship and approaches the harbour master, a tired looking man that holds a notebook and constantly looks around at the Black Knights in concern. Trenchant learns that the city was taken over by the Cult two and half weeks ago. Most of the Knights Of The Black Fist and the Red Plume Mercenaries, whom normally defend the city, were apparently in league with the Cult as very little fighting occurred. The only real damage to the city was to Valjevo Castle, where the Lord Regent, Knight Commander Ector Brahms was stationed, and to the Temple Of Bane that the Knights Of The Black Fist previously served. The Knights are now called the Order Of The Tears Of Virulence as they serve the new ruler of Phlan; Vorgansharax (“The Maimed Virulence”) an ancient Green Dragon.
- The Knight Commander is now missing, presumed dead. The Cult has allowed to the city to continue trading, instead increasing taxes for now and using the city as a base of operations. Vorgansharax has taken residence in Valjevo Castle.
- The Harbour Master off handedly remarks about adventurers or anyone with weapons going missing in the town, and about numerous patrols now checking people randomly on the streets. Convinced the party and ship are indeed a simple merchant ship looking to stock up on new cargo the Harbour Master leaves the party alone. The Cult Officer and Knights pay little attention to the ship, which is just one of many.
- Varis remarks, “If we had come here first we could have avoided this situation entirely! Now we have to travel across an occupied city under control of the Cult, to meet our contact.”
<And as the party decide how to deal with this unexpected situation, that is the end of the session.>

Not only I’ll do the general “log off” boycott on the 17th of December, but I’m also gonna leave Tumblr until it becomes functional again. It became absolute bullshit. I do not feel as good around here as I used to, and for art blogs it became the equivalent of seeing on the Louvre museum’s door : “Do not enter if you are under 18″. Apart from this, it’s been a joy to share art with you all! I hope you had as much pleasure as I had.
Do not exclusively rely on Tumblr to watch art, though! Here’s a non-exhaustive list of platforms displaying art (and you don’t need to be 18):
Google Art Project
WikiArt
The Louvre Museum offers a few virtual online tours
The Louvre Museum Instagram
The Belvedere Museum Instagram
More than 406'000 hi-res images from the Met Museum (New York)
(…)
And, if you can, don’t forget your (not) local museums. Paintings are really majestic in real life. Feel free to complete the list above.
If not already done, you can even do details of paintings by yourself, it’s quite easy, here are some tips : “what part of the painting is attracting your eye first, what do you feel at the moment and want to express that is shown on the picture, what colors or shape makes you feel something strong, what part of the painting makes you understand or interpret its meaning, how would you summarize the painting with (a) part(s) of it, what is the trajectory of your eye on the art, what are the social dynamics of its people, do you want to suggest the scene or to simply show parts of it, where does your eye always come back even when you try not to watch"? And also don’t think you can’t do it (like me at first). It’s about feelings or thoughts more than anything else. If you don’t want (or can’t, ha) post details on Tumblr, it’s really aesthetic in paper diaries!
See you (if things change) and take care of your love for art forms! Love to all.

Hamuha, Hamuchanzu! Today is a very interesting day! You may remember me talking about a valencian tv channel uploading Hamtaro online, well the thing is, the last ep they worked on was 125, which annoyed me a little because I was excited about 126 (”Kind Flora”) and I also used it as an excuse to delay subbing 127 (a Brandy episode). Then they went back to subbing early episodes (I think they started back from episode 1) so we just thought they had no more episodes dubbed.
After a while, they stoppped uploading all together, so our chances were even lower. However recently Kristo noticed that they had started uploading episodes again, and they were not doing it only during weekends like before, but everyday. So if they kept it up, today, March 17th, would be the day where they would either rollback to episode 1 (or some other episode) or continue where they left off.
Lo and behold, they did! They uploaded Episode 126!
Now, the reason I was excited about this episode is... Because I wanted to know what name would the dub give Flora. Because we all know Nurse-chan’s name is Flora, from Rainbow Rescue and Ham-Ham Games. But this strikes me odd. So far we -and the wikipedia that lists Hamtaro episodes titles- have accepted this dub episodes names, because they are shown in english, and hence they were most likely added by Viz themselves before they cancelled the show for some reason.
But now, the officialish name for the episode is “Sweet Little Nasu-chan”. Now, this is odd for two things: they call Nurse-chan/Flora “Nasu” (the valencian dub does too) and they have added “-chan” to the title. They have never added the honorific in any title, and it’s understandable, since it’s a japanese thing and kids wouldn’t know unless they consume japanese dubbed media (or they watch Shinchan I guess) so I am unsure what is the reason behind doing it now.
For those that don’t realize it, “Nasu” is a way to romanjize the pronunciation of “nurse” in Japanese. Funnily, “nasu” means “eggplant” and its part of Eggy-P’s Japanese name.
I also want to point out that I don’t know where they got the “Sweet Little” part because “yasashi” which is the adjective shown in the original title is literally “kind” or “gentle” so...
Therefore we are in a conundrum. Should we address Flora by her videogame name as we did until now? Should we address Nasu by her anime “officialish” name? What do you guys think? We will discuss this in the team to decide what we use for our subs and posts, but you guys are obviously free to use whichever name you prefer.
This aside, I’m excited to see if they keep posting new episodes and we get many more dubbed episodes that will help with subbing! Matta ne~

Days 126-127: Edinburgh, Part 2 (History, Hiking, and Beer)
Our last two days in Edinburgh marked the two-thirds point of our journey in Europe, and the halfway point of my dad's stay with us in Scotland. So far, all we'd really seen of the city itself was the castle, the Whisky Experience, and a few square blocks around the train station in New Town. There's far too much for us to try and see everything, so we picked out a few top choices and did our best to enjoy them as much as possible.
After saying hello to the neighborhood cat, we took the bus into town toward our first stop of the day--the National Museum of Scotland. Now that we'd figured out Edinburgh's bus system, it was actually pretty easy and convenient. And compared to underground metros, buses give you a much better sense of how a city fits together.
We got a closer look at the statue of Greyfriars Bobby, a legendary local terrier who faithfully guarded his master's grave for 14 years until his own death in 1872.
Passing Bobby by, we headed on toward the museum.
The ground floor entry hall had a diverse collection, including a 19th-century Japanese lantern presented on a precisely shin-high marble plinth. It's funny--when I ate it in the Rif Mountains of Morocco, tearing a hole in my pant leg and scraping up my knee, it healed up just fine after a few days. But when I banged my shin against that stone platform without leaving the slightest mark on my pant leg, it took off a chunk of skin underneath and left a deep scar that's still conspicuously purple six months later.
After killing some time in the gift shop--where I found a miniature Blackwatch-patterned umbrella to replace the much-bulkier one I'd been carrying--we joined up with a free tour that introduced us to the various sections of the museum.
The Museum can be roughly divided into four sections: a Scottish history museum, a science and technology museum, a world cultures museum, and a natural history museum. It doesn’t compare to the British Museum in London, of course, but nothing can.
We saw a ridiculously complicated clock that our guide complained never works quite right.
We also saw Dolly the Sheep, the first-ever successfully cloned mammal. Not a recreation--they actually stuffed her after she died and put her on display. We appreciated the attention to detail with regard to the sheep poop at her feet.
The museum is huge. At the center is a massive Victorian hall inspired by the Crystal Palace that used to stand in London. To us, it looked uncannily like the panopticon of Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin. Our guide was nice, but he was so soft-spoken that we could barely hear him most of the time. Once we felt sufficiently oriented, we broke off and went back to the exhibits we were most interested in.
We spent most of our time in the Scottish history museum, which contains a very impressive (and well-displayed) collection of artifacts either made or found in Scotland, dating from prehistoric times up into the 21st century. Limited on time, we mainly stuck to the medieval history floor.
To either side of an old stone inscribed with Celtic knotwork, the walls bear a quote from the Declaration of Arbroath, a 14-century plea from the people of Scotland to Pope John XXII for support in their battle against the invading English army:
For we fight not for glory, nor riches, nor honours, but for Freedom alone, which no good man gives up except with his life. As long as only one hundred of us remain alive we will never on any conditions be brought under English rule.
One of the highlights of the medieval collection are the Lewis Chessmen, part of a medieval Viking chess set discovered on the remote Scottish island of Lewis and Harris.
Eleven pieces of the set are here at the National Museum of Scotland, while the rest are in the British Museum in London. They are carved from walrus ivory and whale teeth with remarkable detail and emotiveness. They could be characters straight out of a modern animated Viking movie.
The rooks are depicted as berserkers chewing their own shields in battle frenzy.
Nearby, we saw the remains of a Celtic cross from Islay, another Scottish island where we'd be staying next after Edinburgh.
Some other highlights included a 17th-century Scottish flag said to have been carried in battle against Oliver Cromwell, a Celtic harp that may be the twin to the Brian Boru Harp at Dublin’s Trinity College, intricately detailed jewelry, some beautifully engraved early firearms, and a precursor to the guillotine known as “the Maiden”--gently used.
Upstairs, they have a good section on the Jacobite rebellions, when the ousted Stuart kings of England returned to their native Scotland to raise an army and reclaim the throne in London. It was a hopeless cause, and after three generations the rebellions finally died out.
Finally, we browsed through a section on the 1700s, when industries like textile weaving and coal mining were starting to boom like never before.
At the top of the museum, we discovered a fabulous view of the castle to the northwest and of the mountainous Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat to the east.
During one of our tours, our guide mentioned Arthur's Seat--a tall volcanic plug that overlooks the city--in a warning against taking online reviews at face value. Apparently, someone on TripAdvisor left a one-star review complaining that it was "just a hill."
The elevator was abominably slow--after spending a good while taking pictures on the roof, we returned to find people who had left the rooftop as we arrived still waiting for the elevator to make its next return. When it finally arrived, we weren't able to fit in, so we decided to make our way down the stairs instead. That may have been a mistake, though. The stairwells and back corridors were so maze-like that we literally caught ourselves going in circles before finding a room we recognized. It was like being back at the Lyon bus terminal.
After the National Museum, I headed off on my own to do some shopping in New Town. Second-guessing my decision to not buy shoes until after Islay, I wanted to see if I could find anything good in the last big English-speaking city we'd be staying in. I didn't find shoes, but I did get some spectacular views.
One of the most striking things about Old Town is it's verticality, which I've mentioned before. The old stone buildings seem to be scrambling up on each other's shoulders, reaching for the sky. We'd also learned from Nik the day before that this is part of an Edinburgh tradition that far predates them. Throughout the Middle Ages, when the city was mostly made of wood, the constricting city walls forced people to build up, creating towering wooden "skyscrapers" that frequently fell down or caught fire. They were crammed with people, and the ensuing sanitation issues were legendary across Europe. It got so bad that Edinburgh earned the nickname Old Reeky.
That was why, in the 1700s, the wealthier citizens finally decided to escape the city walls and build a spacious Georgian-style New Town to the north.
Down in the park where the castle moat used to be, people were crowding to see drum corps performing. August was still a couple weeks away, but the festival season atmosphere was alive and well.
Meanwhile, Jessica and my dad searched out a pub where we could hole up and watch the final World Cup game between Croatia (who we were rooting for) and France. We’ve learned that Scottish people tend to have a great affinity for the French, if only because of their shared rivalry with the English. When the final whistle marked France's victory, the pub erupted in a celebration unlike anything I've ever seen in person.
Emerging back into the overcast sunlight, we cooled off with a relaxing walk down the breezy Royal Mile. We wanted to get some dinner at the famous World’s End pub, but it was full up. The pub's name dates back to a time when it butted against the old city walls. Anyone entering the city had to pay a steep toll to pass through the gates, even if they were residents. For many people, this meant that if they ever left the city, they might never be able to get back in. To them, this pub might as well have been the world's end.
We turned back and ended up enjoying a wonderful dinner at an Indian-Thai hybrid restaurant--once we were finally able to find the door.
After dinner, we strolled the rest of the way down the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh's royal palace. It was well past closing time, but we were able to get a good view through the gates.
We also got to see the distinctive architectural style of the of the Scottish Parliament Building, and the Salisbury Crags jutting up dramatically behind them.
We'd be returning first thing tomorrow morning to hike the trail that runs beneath them. But for now, we ran to catch the bus that would take us back home. We tried to get my dad to watch the pilot episode of The Expanse, but we didn’t quite make it to the end before we were all starting to drift off.
The next morning, we bused back to Holyrood Palace and picked up where we left off--facing down the Salisbury Crags.
We--or at least I--didn't have the time or nerve to climb the larger Arthur's seat, but the Crags offered a nice compromise. And we didn't actually climb the top of the Crags. Rather, we followed the Radical Road that runs halfway up the Crags, along the foot of the cliff face.
The Radical Road is named for a group of workers that took part in a nationwide strike in 1820 known as the Radical War. Wealthy Scottish citizens like Sir Walter Scot who supported the Radicals decided to support them by paying them to do other work while they were on strike--such as building a completely unnecessary road midway up the Salisbury Crags and parallel to a perfectly serviceable road that already existed.
The beginning was steep, and my dad and I quickly started to question our decision, but all doubts were erased as we got high enough to see the view over the city.
At its height, the road cuts through Hollyrood Park, which used to be the private hunting grounds of the kings and queens of Scotland.
Reaching the end of the Radical Road, we kept on going toward the neighborhood of Duddingston and the highly-recommended Sheep Heid Inn. The inn has reputedly been in operation for over 600 years, which would make it the oldest pub in Edinburgh and possibly all of Scotland. The name comes from the old Scotts English for sheep’s head. The popular explanation is that King James VI of Scotland (and I of England) presented the pub owners with a golden snuff box engraved with a ram’s head on the lid. The pub was halfway between two royal residences, so James would often visit the pub along the way.
The kitchen wasn't quite open yet, so the three of us ordered drinks and enjoyed a rest after our hike. Once the kitchen opened, the food turned out to be just as spectacular as all the people who'd recommended it to us said. Jessica and I both had linguine with crab, shrimp, and chorizo. I don't even like seafood, but I loved that meal.
After lunch, we took an Uber back to the World’s End, where we each had a shot of Drambuie in honor of my dad’s Scottish friend John. For those of you who didn't know either, Drambuie is a sweet liqueur made from Scotch whisky, honey, and spices. A very distinctive beverage, it somehow manages to be both delicious and disgusting at the same time.
Our long-awaited toast complete, we decided to make it an official pub crawl and continued over to the BrewDog pub on Cowgate. My dad and I had learned about Brewdog from the TV show Brew Dogs, where the two Scottish brewers who run BrewDog travel the US crafting locally inspired novelty beers and converting beer skeptics to the way of the hop.
My dad had their signature Punk IPA, and I had their 5AM Saint red ale. I generally don’t like IPAs, but the Punk was surprisingly well-balanced despite being so hoppy. It had the sour and citrusy notes of a typical IPA, but very little bitterness. My ale was also surprisingly good. It was hoppier than any other red or amber ale I’ve had before, but the bright hoppy notes actually did a great job balancing out the ale and making it refreshing instead of heavy.
Jessica had a cider that was pretty good, too.
Went to St. Giles’ Cathedral, the seat of the Church of Scotland. It isn’t the largest, but it is stunning inside. The stained glass is mostly modern, but it is strikingly good.
It's free to enter the cathedral, but you are expected to pay if you want to take pictures. And we can confirm that the people working there will not hesitate to call you out for breaking the rule.
We still had some shopping to do--including picking up something for dinner--so we decided to walk over to New Town. I lead us along my footsteps from the previous day, taking Jessica and my dad through narrow closes and down the hill.
Tomorrow, we would head out early for Islay, so we caught a bus home with plenty of time to rest up and start packing.
Before I close our chapter on Edinburgh, I have to mention our charming hosts, Joyce and Ian. They were very kind and accommodating, but sometimes we felt that they didn't expect us to take them up on their offers as much as we did.
For example, they said we couldn’t use the kitchen to cook, but we could use it to heat a ready meal up in the oven. On our last night, we bought some meat pies that we didn’t realize at first weren’t microwavable. Ian said that it would be no problem for us to use the oven, and he even showed us some tips on how to get the crust to brown up just right. But when Joyce showed up and asked suspiciously what we were up to, Ian was nowhere to be seen.
It was a good time, and I’m glad that Jessica and I got to enjoy the British bed and breakfast experience several times during our months on the island. But we really found out just how strongly we prefer having a place to ourselves with a proper kitchen that we can use whenever we want.

Families separated at Mexico border build new American life
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In a cramped house with mice in the kitchen and music booming from cars outside, Keldy Mabel Gonzales Brebe lays bare her three-year journey from Honduras to the United States and all that lies ahead to adapt to life as an immigrant.
She fled the Central American nation with her family and a price on her head to seek asylum at the U.S. border. Instead, U.S. officials separated her from her children, jailed and deported her under President Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy to prosecute adults entering the country illegally. While the boys were allowed to live with relatives in Philadelphia, their mother struggled to join them from Mexico.
Keldy missed celebrating birthdays and holidays together. She watched from afar as her teenagers filled out and grew facial hair.
“There were times I thought I would never see them again,” she said.
Three years later, America has jettisoned many of Trump’s hardline immigration policies.
Keldy was one of four parents who returned to the United States during the first week of May with temporary legal status to join their children in what Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said was “just the beginning” of a broader effort to reunify families separated during Trump’s presidency — more than 5,500 children. Her family’s ups and downs illustrate what many parents and children encounter as they try to make up for lost time.
Keldy counts her blessings to be together as a family, free from death threats in Honduras and the pain of separation.
Yet now they face new difficulties. Keldy’s son, Mino, dropped out of school to help pay rent on the house that six of them share. Keldy sleeps on the living room sofa. She wants to get a job, but is caring for her 7-year-old autistic niece and an unsteady 75-year-old mother, along with cooking and cleaning for the family. She sees drug use on the streets of the Kensington section of Philadelphia where they live.
“I hear gunshots sometimes. With my sister, when we run a quick errand, I look around to see whether someone was killed,” Keldy said. “La Ceiba, where I grew up, was like that.”
____
Honduras, a mountainous nation located between Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, is beautiful but broken, Keldy says.
She and her family lived on the north Caribbean shore, in a tourist area. Her husband was a guide, taking American tourists to a region of tropical rainforest, pine savannah and marsh called La Mosquitia, or whitewater rafting on the Cangrejal River.
Keldy described herself as middle-class housewife. She would cook for the tourists on the expeditions.
Drug trafficking gangs controlled some areas and required payments from businesses and people for protection. For those who didn’t pay, the penalty was death.
Hit men killed one of her brothers in 2006, she said. He was a bus driver.
“He had no money. The owner of the bus was the one who was supposed to pay, not him. He was just the bus driver. But they killed him,” she said.
In 2011, her family and other families decided to try to buy some parcels of land to live on and grow crops. Gangs, however, did not agree with the purchase and threatened one her brothers, then killed him after he reported the threats to authorities. He was one of four siblings killed by gangs.
Keldy testified in open court against the killers. She received numerous threats and was told there was a price on her head.
The whole family fled to Mexico in 2013 but were deported by the Mexican government right away.
Back in Honduras, they fled to a rural mountainous area called El Naranjo in attempt to hide from the gangs. But in 2017, neighbors told her there were people asking about her schedule: When did she usually leave the house and when did she usually get back? The fear returned, and the family left for the United States.
She crossed the border with her youngest son Erick, now 17, and her middle child Mino, now 19, in the fall of 2017.
The family planned to apply for asylum, so Keldy flagged down a Border Patrol cruiser in the New Mexico desert. She and her sons were taken together to a cell in a detention center in Deming, New Mexico, 35 miles north of the border. They thought they’d be released at some point, and would meet up with her oldest son, who crossed the same day in Arizona, and other family in Philadelphia.
But unknown to them, President Trump had imposed extraordinary measures to limit asylum, criminally prosecuting everyone who entered the United States illegally from Mexico and resulting in the separation of thousands of children from their parents. The government was unable to reunify them after criminal cases ended because its tracking systems failed to link parents to their children.
Less than two days after the family had arrived in the U.S., Keldy was handcuffed and separated from the boys.
“I felt helpless, like there was nothing I could do. And then I blamed myself because I brought my kids to uncertainty, into a situation in which they were taken from me, they were taken from my arms and I couldn’t do anything,” she said.
The kids were frightened to be separated from their mother.
“We started crying, my brother and I, because we were left alone in there. And it was very cold. They only gave us a small blanket,” recalled Erick, who was 13 then. His brother Mino was 15.
The boys were moved to a shelter for minors.
Mino, who wears glasses and smiles often, said he did not want to do anything at the time, just cry. He felt lost at the shelter, with the other unaccompanied minors.
“They did not feel what I was going through because they had come alone. They did not come with their mother. They did not feel the pain I felt when I was separated from her,” he said.
The children were both soon released, and family members paid for their flight to Philadelphia. Their older brother, Alex, now 21, eventually became the legal guardian of his brothers and cared for them while they went to school, working construction.
But Keldy was not released. She was kept in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in El Paso, Texas, for a year and a half and then deported to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, in January 2019.
She immediately traveled back north and settled in Tapachula, Ascensión and then Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, waiting for a chance to enter the United States.
In Mexico, Keldy got by with money sent to her by her kids, her sisters and her husband, who crossed the border five years ago and lives in Texas. She video chatted with her boys, and remembers with pain of missing graduations and other big moments: This January, Erick did not want to come out of his room on his 17th birthday.
“He felt alone,” Keldy said. “I wasn’t there”.
Online learning during the pandemic was a problem for both boys, who say they no longer understand classes. Mino dropped out in December. They say they can read English but they don’t speak it.
In Ciudad Juarez, Keldy walked each morning toward the border, where she could see the bridges heading toward El Paso, Texas, and prayed.
Known to others as “la pastora”, she delivered sermons and benedictions to other migrants and at migrant shelters, listening to others who were in pain, like her.
“I would tell others in my prayers to believe, to never doubt, answers were going to come to our lives,” she said.
___
The answer she’d been waiting for arrived last month. Linda Corchado, director of legal services at the non-profit Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, contacted her: Biden’s task force was working to reunite families separated at the border. Keldy needed to get passport photos.
Corchado had been trying obtain a humanitarian parole for Keldy, and finally found success.
“I realized then these were the final steps the attorney was doing to get me in,” she said. “Later she told me I would probably enter on May 4 at 8 am. I kept asking God for it to be true.”
It was.
She entered on May 4, with Corchado, through the Bridge of The Americas.
The Honduran mother took a plane to Dallas and then another one to Philadelphia. While flying, all she thought about were the first words she would tell her kids.
“They ended up being ‘I love you’. Those are the words I wanted to tell my kids, that I loved them,” she said.
A video shows the family reunion on May 4 in the Philadelphia home of a niece, with Keldy crying while her kids hug her. “Hola mi amor, amor mío (“Hello my love, my love”),” the video shows her saying, her face buried in the arms of her sons.
They are together, yet life still isn’t easy.
Since her arrival, the Honduran mother has been inside the home, cleaning and cooking. When she speaks there is relief but also anxiety in her voice. She wonders about the sturdiness of the house, the stairs that feel unstable.
She doesn’t venture out much. Opioid use has taken root in Kensington, which has been singled out, nationwide, as an example of the effects of underinvestment, crime and drug use.
She misses small-town life south of the border; the close buildings of Kensington make her feel trapped.
Keldy is thinking about finding a job, but she worries about leaving her mother, who forgot she was cooking the other day until there was fire in the stove. Keldy burned her hand putting it out, leaving marks on her skin.
“I don’t know what I am going to do. I would like to work but who is going to take care of my mother and Dana?” she said of the niece she adopted as a baby.
Las Americas has connected them to mental health specialists who will speak online with Keldy and her sons to help them cope with the trauma of separation.
Corchado, the attorney, said Keldy has been granted humanitarian parole for three years but she hopes the Task Force puts her on a pathway for citizenship before that. She is also trying to make sure she is all right.
“We don’t just want the door open for Keldy. We want her to be successful in the United States,” Corchado said. “She shouldn’t be sleeping on a couch after all the horrible experiences she went through.”
But for Keldy, it’s enough, now, to be with her children. She knows that’s more than many of her fellow migrants have.
“Everyday I pray to God for other mothers to be able to come in. They cry for their kids,” she said. “They ask me ‘do you know anything new?’ and I tell them to have patience. And I tell them they will succeed.”

Q&A with Jimmy Q) "Hi Jimmy - I'm really sorry to bother you with this but I'm going to ask - do you still do that neat trick of finding things? I can see things have taken off and how busy you are and I don't want to book a session with you if you don't think its appropriate." - A.W. A) "My friend that does what I do always says “I can help you with disease/illness or disorders but don’t ask me to find your car keys LOL" So that’s where I am at right now for sure……….but I know you can body dowse/map out, narrow down locations, rooms/cars etc. I like statements instead of questions……… where are my car keys? Instead make a statement, "My car keys are in the bedroom." and you’ll get a yes or no. When looking for stuff you can figure it out for sure." - Jimmy

Editor’s note: so as I mentioned in my last post, I’m migrating some content over to this site from Facebook because of Zuckerbergs head-up-his-butt decision to ban antifascist and anarchist accounts. I haven’t been banned yet, but I’m not interested in losing my content if it happens. This journal is a re-post from my Facebook page and originally appeared on March 17th, 2020.
March 17th, 2020 – Debate Fallout (Literally)
Despite my overwhelming reservations, I, like millions of other Americans locked inside their homes to wait out Captain Tripps, spent the better part of my Sunday evening watching the Democratic Party nomination contest debate between Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden.
The debate itself was pretty much like all of the previous debates, which is to say, in a word – infuriating. If anyone can really have been said to be the “winner” of this contest, it was unquestionably Sanders but if American democratic socialists were hoping he’d just come out and destroy a completely incoherent Biden, they were undoubtedly disappointed. Bernie fell far short of saying what everyone following this race already knows to be true – that Joe Biden’s brain doesn’t work and his best chance of actually beating Trump in the fall rests on some combination of mass deaths caused by coronavirus and cheap Russian oil crashing the U.S. petrodollar.
If anything, the debate was most memorable for the simple fact that Joe Biden spent the entire evening demonstrating that while he can’t tell his wife from his sister, he’s still capable of lying his butt off like a champ if the situation requires it. Please understand that I’m not talking about one lie here, or even Palooka Joe’s altogether routine habit of twisting the truth; Joe Biden went on CNN and bald-faced lied over and over while demonstrating the ability to falsify his publicly documented record in government on issues both large and small. Biden lied about his crusade to cut social security, his opposition to abortion rights, his opposition to the New Green Deal and the (late) timing of his conversion from an opponent of gay marriage, to a supporter. Palooka Joe also falsely accused Bernie of having 9 Super Pacs (Sanders has zero), he once again lied about his support for the Iraq war; from the Hyde amendment to Medicare for All, Joe Biden falsified not only his current policy positions, but his entire voting record as a government official – at one point, Joe literally said he hated the Bankruptcy Bill he himself f*cking wrote.
While the naive among us might have expected CNN’s (corporate media) moderators to step in and insist Biden stop selling whoppers like the debate stage is a Burger King take-out line, it will surprise no one who has followed the ongoing media machinations to destroy Bernie that this did not occur. Furthermore, the fact that Joe Biden objectively lied to the viewing audience, about verifiable matters of historical record, on at least twelve occasions during the debate didn’t seem to even rate a mention during the post-debate liberal media news roundtables that gleefully called the debate a win for Biden – a curious position considering the exact same “liberal” news organizations and in most cases the same pundits rated Mike Pence a loser against wooden ventriloquist’s dummy Tim Kaine in 2016, for adopting essentially the same strategy Biden did against Sanders – as soon as the cameras start rolling, Pence started to lie and simply don’t stop lying until the debate was over.
Yes my friends, for the astute observer the actual debate itself was merely a sideshow to the extremely revealing post-debate chatter of our in-pocket, pro-elite, for profit media minions. As I sat back and watched what is ultimately just the latest act in corporate “liberal” media’s efforts to elect a center right establishment Democrat and destroy Bernie Sanders (as well as the democratic socialist movement as a whole), I found myself wondering if the Democratic Party and their elite media allies even understood that with each bald-faced lie, and open act of duplicity, they were moving inexorably closer to becoming the architects of their own demise. You cannot of course fool all of the people, all of the time and anyone who actually watched that debate and thought the big news in the morning was Biden’s flavorless promise to nominate an as of yet unnamed woman for Vice President, and not the fact that Joe lied all night at a rate that would make even Downmarket Mussolini himself blush, is probably already working for CAP anyway.
As shameful and alarming as the media’s performance on behalf of Biden was however, even *I* wasn’t really ready for the caronavirus subplot that played out after Bernie suggested that it was irresponsible to continue running the primary contests while the CDC is begging Americans to avoid groups larger than fifty people and the President himself is telling folks on TV that even gatherings of ten people aren’t safe. Sanders is of course right and that fact is becoming increasingly more obvious by the hour as the whole western world shifts towards a pandemic-induced lockdown; despite this however, the Democratic Party is going to run four primaries later today, even though doing so will undoubtedly help spread COVID-19 and indeed, cost lives. Perhaps more alarmingly however, the entire Democratic establishment including Joe Biden’s campaign itself, as well as noted liberal luminary influencers like CAP’s Neera Tanden and MSNBC’s Joy Ann Reid have responded as if delaying primaries Sanders isn’t going to win no matter when they are held, represents some kind of plot to steal the nomination from Joe Biden – a nomination that they feel belongs to the center-right establishment now, since they already stole it with rigged primaries and potentially a billion dollars worth of free media smears on Sanders. Grimly enough, the liberal establishment has actually gone so far as to declare wandering out in a pandemic to vote for Joe Biden a moral duty for Democrats in America; one woman even compared doing so to surviving the middle passage - a position that could objectively be described as “insane” if that term didn’t somehow fall to cover how crass all of this is.
As grim as it might be, I think it’s important that we face the facts here – we know how coronavirus spreads, we know that it’s disproportionately dangerous (and even potentially fatal) for people over sixty-five and we know that older voters are overwhelmingly going for Joe Biden in this primary fight. There is absolutely no f*cking way on earth you can tell me that Bernie and the left are trying to steal an already crooked as f*ck race by acting to… save the lives of Joe Biden voters in a nomination contest that Biden is going to win no matter *when* or *how* folks get to vote. Indeed it was initially impossible for me to understand what line of logic the sh*tlibs were pursuing in arguing that it was somehow wrong to ensure senior voters got to cast a ballot without potentially suffocating to death in agony for their troubles; it wasn’t until I waded deep into the comments section and noticed that most of the hired Dem Party online mercenaries couldn’t help but mention they wanted the primaries to end as fast as possible so Bernie would shut the f*ck up, that I was even able to grasp the horrifying endgame being played out here.
Look, I’m not a Harvard graduate but I don’t think it takes a genius to realize that “you should f*cking literally die so your corporate overlords can install Joe Biden and silence the left” isn’t exactly a message that endears you to the base – it’s one thing to lie to people on behalf of a desiccating mummy like Palooka Joe, but it’s entirely another to directly tell them you think grandma is an acceptable sacrifice on the altar of neoliberalism if it means maintaining corporate rule and the supremacy of elite capital.
In other words, expect rain.

Update: in the time since this post was written, Ohio has suspended its primary contest today (most likely until July 2nd) – as of yet, Democrats in Illinois, Arizona and Florida are still being encouraged to put their life on the line for Joe Biden’s nomination campaign.

COVID-19 roundup: two new local cases reported Wednesday
A pair of new COVID-19 cases were reported in Grey Bruce Wednesday according to the Grey Bruce Health Unit’s daily situation report.
There have been five new cases in the past three days and 18 so far in June.
The region’s total case count now stands at 111 with 10 active reported cases. Ninety-six cases have recovered, and five cases have been referred to other public health units.
The two cases in local hospitals were removed from the data Wednesday, and no local deaths have been attributed to COVID-19.
One long-term care facility, Elgin Abbey in Chesley, is currently under a declared COVID-19 outbreak. Only one person in the facility has tested positive for the disease according to the health unit.
There have been 28 COVID-19 cases reported in local healthcare workers.
COVID-19 numbers throughout the province were back under 200 Wednesday as public health units across Ontario tallied 163 new lab-test confirmed cases of the disease.
Over 2,600 people in Ontario have died as a result of COVID-19 with 12 deaths in the last 24-hour period.
Currently, there are 278 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, 48 of which are breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.

Patio season is hitting downtown Meaford as a limited number of parking spots on Sykes Street will be converted into restaurant patio space.
The affected area will be between Collingwood and Nelson streets on the main drag through town, a block south from the harbour and Georgian Bay waterfront.
“Our restaurants have been working hard to make it through the last few months with takeout and curbside pickup,” said Meaford’s Manager of Strategic Initiatives Janet Sperling in a press release. “With these patios, they can get back to serving tables safely as we work towards economic recovery.”
Concrete barriers are being installed between the road and the patios later this week. Sidewalks will be kept clear for pedestrian traffic. Restaurants are responsible for setting up their patios within the blocked-off area by installing decking, tables and seating. The barriers will be in place until October, according to a Town of Meaford press release.
On-street parking in Meaford’s downtown core will continue to be free. Additional nearby parking is available at the Market Square parking lot and on local side streets as marked.
“Our staff have been working in close partnership with the business community and the Economic Recovery Task Force that includes representation from the Chamber of Commerce and BIA, throughout the pandemic,” said Meaford’s CAO and Director of Development Services Rob Armstrong. “Implementing the Patio project, originally approved in 2015, is one way we can support our local economy and the needs of our businesses. In addition, we have also been working with restaurants in establishing patios on their own property.”

Add Owen Sound’s SweetWater Music Festival to the list of local events cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The festival board announced the postponement of the 17th annual music festival until September 2021 in a press release Tuesday.
They also announced plans to replace the festival this year with a “multifaceted, multi-platform music experience” from late summer to late fall called SweetWater Surreal.
The programming will include three feature concerts as well as small-scale and live concerts to be held in outdoor locations throughout Owen Sound, Meaford and elsewhere.
Online and virtual programming will also be a part of the Sweetwater Surreal music mix including live-streamed concerts and interactive opportunities with SweetWater musicians.
“After what all of us have experienced since March, we need music more than ever,“ said SweetWater Artistic Director Edwin Huizinga Huizinga. “I strongly feel we need to provide alternative ways for everyone in our community to connect to music. Some of this is going to be new for both SweetWater and my fellow musicians but it’s something we have to do.”
SweetWater recently launched Front Row, which will be a key feature of SweetWater Surreal. This online feature provides opportunities to hear about a performer’s life and career as well as their music. The first segment focused on violinist Jaron Freeman-Fox.
The SweetWater Surreal plan is designed to be easily adjusted no matter how things evolve on the COVID-19 front over the coming weeks and months, according to the Sweetwater press release.
Additional details about SweetWater Surreal, including other featured performers to be involved along with venues, formats, and dates will be announced in the first half of July.

More Meteors Streak through Moonless Midnights, Winter is Coming, and Telescope Buying Tips!
(Above: This Dobsonian style reflector makes an excellent first telescope because it is simple, but powerful - showing you the moon and planets as well as dimmer objects like nebulas and bright galaxies. Many brands come in this format.)
Astronomy Skylights for this week (from December 17th, 2017) by Chris Vaughan. (Feel free to pass this along to friends and send me your comments, questions, and suggested topics.) I post these with photos at http://astrogeoguy.tumblr.com/ where the old editions are archived. You can also follow me on Twitter as @astrogeoguy! Unless otherwise noted, all times are Eastern Time. Please click this MailChimp link to subscribe to these emails. If you are a teacher or group leader interested joining me on a guided field trip to York University’s Allan I. Carswell Observatory, or another in your area, visit www.astrogeo.ca.
(Above: As the Earth orbits the sun, it’s polar axis points continuously at the same point in the sky. On the June and December Solstices, the northern hemisphere’s pole tilts directly towards and away from the sun respectively, causing the noon-day sun to reach its highest and lowest points in the sky for the year. A lower sun delivers weaker solar radiation for a shorter number of hours, giving us cold winter temperatures.)
Happy Holidays, everyone! Or, as we astronomers say, “Have a Happy Solstice and a Merry Perihelion!”
For the Northern Hemisphere, the first day of winter, also called the Winter Solstice, occurs on Thursday, December 21st at 11:28 am Eastern Time. At that precise moment, the north pole of the Earth’s axis of rotation will be tilting directly away from the Sun. Every day, at local noon, the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky for that day. But at the Winter Solstice, that position is the lowest (i.e., farthest south, celestially) for the entire year, and we receive the shortest amount of daylight. The sunlight that we do get this time of year is diluted because it’s spread over a larger area, the same way a flashlight beam looks dimmer when you shine it obliquely at a wall (try it!).
Fewer hours and weaker sunlight both translate into less received solar energy (insolation) and therefore colder temperatures! Good news for us, though - after Thursday, our days start growing longer again! For our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, the Sun will attain its highest noon-time height for the year on the solstice, and it marks the start of their summer season.
It is NOT the case, as some people think, that we are colder in winter because we are farther to the Sun (a position called aphelion) – in actuality that happens every year in early July! On the contrary – we’re approaching Earth’s nearest position from the Sun (perihelion), which occurs every January 4, or thereabouts.
Telescope Buying Tips
A few people have asked me about buying a first telescope. Two of the most important characteristics in telescope performance are its aperture (the diameter of the main “tube”) and the sturdyness of the mount/tripod. The aperture is the diameter of the main mirror or lens in the telescope, and the larger it is, the more light it can gather, allowing fainter objects to be seen more brightly and easily. A larger aperture also increases the telescope’s angular resolution, or sharpness, which is especially helpful for planets.
In a refractor telescope (the type with the lens at the front end of the main tube), look for a minimum diameter of 60 mm. This type of telescope will offer nice views of the brighter planets, the Moon, double stars, and brighter nebulae and clusters. The performance of a telescope improves with the square of the aperture, so an 80 mm telescopes is (80*80)/(60*60) = 1.8 times more powerful than a 60 mm telescope! Nearly double!
In reflector telescopes (the type with the large mirror inside the bottom of the main tube), diameters of 6 or 8 inches are common and affordable. Because of that aperture scaling rule, they outperform the refractor telescope by showing dimmer galaxies and clusters, especially from a dark sky, while also showing the same brighter objects.
The second important factor when shopping is the mount, including the tripod. A high quality telescope on a rickety mount is practically useless. Every time you touch it, for focusing or centering an object, you set off a wild shaking of the image. This is one of the main reasons why cheap department store telescopes are poor investments – people get frustrated when they can’t put objects in the field of view.
(Above: The Skywatcher BK 705AZ3 refractor features a resonable aperture and a sturdy alt-azmount and tripod with slow motion controls.)
Skywatcher makes a good affordable series of starter telescopes. Here’s a 70mm diameter model that ticks all the boxes. They have larger aperture versions, too. Look for the “AZ3” part of the model number. It’s a good, lightweight, and sturdy tripod that includes slow motion controls for following the object as the Earth turns. Any other brand with the same specifications should be okay, too.
The type of telescope I recommend most for beginners is the Dobsonian style. While larger and heavier, they are simple and easy to set up and use. They are less portable, but are quite rugged and can be transported in the trunk of your car if padded decently. The beauty of the Dobsonian design is the extremely sturdy mounting system – not a tripod., but a swivelling and tilting box that holds the big tube. Once aimed at a target, a simple nudge with your finger will re-centre the object without any undue shaking. These types of telescopes typically show a generous amount of sky in their eyepiece, making finding targets much easier. I’ll post a picture of this type on my Tumblr blog here.
The best brands of consumer telescopes include Meade Instruments, Celestron, Skywatcher, Orion, and iOptron. Some of the GTA telescope vendors include New Eyes Old Skies, Ontario Telescope, KW Telescope, and Khan Scope. Many of these vendors offer both new and used equipment, which can be a very cost effective solution. Dobsonians in particular can be found used on sites like Kijiji and the Canadian astronomy selling site Astrobuysell. Good used telescope prices range from $250 to $400. If you are buying used, make sure that you try the telescope on a star – to ensure that you can achieve a sharp pinpoint focus. One last tip – the eyepiece does the job of magnifying. So look for telescopes that accept eyepieces with 1.25” diameter barrels – the standard for quality equipment. That way you can add extra eyepieces, or upgrade to better quality ones later.
Here’s an online beginner telescope buying guide from the Backyard Astronomer's Guide folks.
Public Events
I now have access to an inflatable planetarium and digital projection system for school and group presentation! Send me a note if you want to know more about that.
Taking advantage of dark moonless evening skies this week, the members of the RASC Toronto Centre will gather for dark sky stargazing at Long Sault Conservation area, northeast of Oshawa on (only) the first clear evening from Monday to Thursday this week. You don’t need to be an RASC member, or own any equipment, to join them. Check here for details and watch the banner on their homepage or their Facebook page for the GO or NO-GO decision around 5 pm each day.
On Monday evenings, York University’s Allan I. Carswell Observatory runs an online star party - broadcasting views from four telescopes/cameras, answering viewer questions, and taking requests! Details are here. And on Wednesday evenings after dark, they offer free public viewing through their telescopes. If it’s cloudy, the astronomers give tours and presentations. Details are here.
(Above: The annual Ursid Meteor Shower peaks on December 22 before dawn. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but all Ursids will appear to travel away from the radiant above the Little Dipper.)
Ursid Meteor Shower Peak
The annual Ursid meteor shower runs from December 17 to 23 annually. This year, it peaks during the wee hours of Friday, December 22, when seeing 10- 20 meteors per hour is possible under dark skies. The best time to watch will be from midnight until dawn that morning, but you can also watch after dinner. The moon will be a young waxing crescent that sets in early evening on the peak night, setting up good meteor watching conditions. The shower’s radiant is above the Little Dipper in Ursa Minor (Little Bear), near Polaris, but the meteors can appear anywhere. I wrote about meteor-watching tips last week.
The Moon and Planets
The New Moon phase, when the moon is crossing the imaginary line between Earth and the Sun, occurs at 1:30 am on Monday morning. So the moon will be hidden from view beside the Sun in the daytime sky. The first chance to see the moon again comes Monday at sunset, when its extremely slim silver crescent will be low in the western sky. Over the following few evenings, the moon will wax (grow thicker) and draw away from the Sun, but it will still set early in the evening – giving us dark moonless nights for most of this week.
If you’re an early riser, you’ve probably been seeing a very bright object shining in the eastern dawn sky. That’s Jupiter, which rises about 4 am local time this week and is well above the southeastern horizon by dawn. Much dimmer and red-tinted, Mars, which rises before Jupiter, at about 3:30 am local time, is sitting to Jupiter’s upper right. On Monday morning, Mars will be about a fist diameter from Jupiter. But over the course of this week, Mars’ eastward orbital motion will carry it towards Jupiter, so the separation between them will shrink to a palm’s width next weekend.
(Above: The pre-dawn sky, shown here for 6:45 am local time on Decmeber 24, 2017, has all the naked eye planets this month - with Mars rising first, followed by Jupiter, and then Mercury. Over the course of this week, Mercury’s orbit swings it away from the sun, making it easy to spot about 6:45 am local time,)
Mercury re-appears in the pre-dawn sky this week. It’s going to be quite easy to see - especially later in the week when it has climbed farther from the sun. Between about 6:45 and 7 am local time, it will be the medium bright “star” sitting low in the southeastern sky.
With Venus and Saturn hidden near the sun, Uranus and Neptune are the only planets left in the evening sky, setting about 2:30 am and 11 pm local time respectively. Blue-green Uranus is midway between the two chains of stars that form the dim constellation of Pisces (the Fishes). Tiny blue Neptune, only observable in a backyard telescope, is about half a finger’s width below the medium-bright star Hydor in Aquarius (the Water-Bearer).
Keep looking up to enjoy the sky! I love getting questions so, if you have any, send me a note.
