Sonic also very much HAD gradual design changes between 1991-7...it's just that the general public didn't give a shit. We go from this tubbiness

To long legs and hair mcbrow here. Hoshino did Sonic CD and R 2D art, and the diff between that and here is still indicating an overall evolution. Only Amy and Eggman drastically changed, which for the former I'm glad. Better than being a literal girl Sonic clone. The rest are just continuing a trend then adding iris color

But really I feel Sonic Team did the redesigns to welcome a new era, given how Japan unironically forgot about Sonic. It's jarring- if you ignore 6-7 years of the franchise, but also distinctively full of much needed energy given the crap 1995-7 period.

Similarly I feel we're missing cultural context; both the US and Japan had a problem with associating design with specific tone, so you ended up with typecasted designs. Sonic despite having attitude and games like 3K WAS associated to being a cutesy generic mascot inferior to Hello Kitty in Japan, which is not a good thing. Almost all noncanon manga further just divorced itself from actual game tone to be a parody or cutesy manga, which both Naka and Oshima didn't like, same for early Sega Harmony Calendar art.

The US market had a forced redesign that lasted till 1994 that while ass, unfortunately just lended to the idea of not accepting a design as is, regardless of tone. So Sonic Team gave in to that for Adventure, which a competition was held in 1997 to see how it was recieved. Uekawa won ironically cuz he had the safest design, but took elements of Okano's art later to add flair and zaniness as it'd defeat the point otherwise

I feel Capcom had a similar problem with Megaman: they didn't feel comfortable with solely using the same design for bigger stories, so they opted for the more adult X spinoffs, and then similarly did the same for Legends and Battle Network (ironically I feel this backfired). Even Ruby Spears attempted to be faithful for their show pilot, but test audiences didn't like it, so we got a mediocre jocked up muscle Mega Man. While in Japan the anime OVAs were very cutesy and basic, despite games being more action oriented

It's hard to say if this issue disappeared now, and I feel it's revisionism to say "oh, if the redesigns didn't happen, no one would be mad" cuz the truth is...Sonic would die if he didn't change harder

I feel both ignoring every middle design and just lumping Sonic as "Classic" "Modern" is a very stupid thing as both are fucking subjective and tempermental terms. Adventure isn't "modern", and anything with sentimental value and nostalgia is "classic". Heroes is fucking over 20 years old, and can be considered one to some, as unpopular of an opinion that is. Sonic Team didn't have eras awkwardly like that in the 10th Anniversary book, and even said "Sonic will continue changing", but after 10 more years of the fandom, original creatives outside Iizuka leaving, and game reviewers destroying nuance and history, they forcibly had to split him like so for Generations. I see the same fan mentality outside Sonic for Golden Age era cartoons, it's maddening. Just look at Looney Tunes fans on how they treat Daffy, it's the same shit

Sorry for ranting, but I hate when history and evolution are ignored just to make strawmanned points when it boils down to "wishful revisionism under MY misnostalgia/control". I saw someone make an SA1 mod to make stages "More classic" with checker spam when not only is that term bullshit, Sega and Okano literally showed us concept art of Adventure stages before the char designs tweaks, and it's the exact same texture and bg prop set as final. That is maddening

At the risk of being blunt, I'm aware of all that. I assure you that I could never forget American the Assface and Ivo No-Eyes no matter how much I'd prefer to.

As for Mario, his earliest designs had the excuse of it not being fully set in stone yet, and with the N64 era onward, they generally only involved slight proportion changes or subtle details in the clothing and what have you... much like Sonic in the years between 91 and 97, American Assface and other questionable SoA decisions notwithstanding. The point is, Mario wasn't redesigned for the explicit purpose of seeming like a more mature bing bing wahoo man. :P Neither was Kirby, who I used for reference due to his reputation of fighting eldritch abominations and occasional dark subtext despite resembling a pink blob with stubs for arms.

Finally, I can't speak for how others choose to use the terms, but I use Classic and Modern for simple convenience. I agree that there should never have been an official line in the sand between the two, at least outside of Generations' context, but this is what the franchise has taught us to do at this point. That's the ugly truth, I'm afraid. As is the ugly truth that the vocal, dramatic shift to the Adventure designs and style - regardless of intent, regardless of justification, regardless of the gradual alterations and differences between artists in the years beforehand, regardless of every angle of relevant context - still brought on one of the single most notorious divides in a fandom full of them, up there with the debut of SatAM. We can debate all day as to whether it was fair or not, but the divide happened all the same.

I'm not a Classic-only purist. SA1 is one of my favourite games in the series, and I love various other Modern titles. And to stress once more, I like the Modern character designs and have no personal beef with them whatsoever. But I can't ignore these things in an age where Adventure era rose-tinted goggles are at an all time high, and while it's true that not everything is straightforward, that goes both ways in cases like this.

SO. This all was started by me watching a theory video. In it someone said something about TotK being a closed loop (in reference to the time travel)—which I didn't agree with.

My reasoning, copied straight from my original ramble (with edits for grammar to make it easier to read):

The glyphs were supposedly made by ancient ppl after watching the dragons tears. But, they only appeared after Zelda time traveled

And, iirc, before the sword is sent back the light dragon is there. BUT she doesnt have the glowy light trails on her head yet.

Then I realized all that kinda falls apart bc tanondorf recognizes Zelda prior to her time traveling. BUT I can fix this.

Tangent time. I know this sounds really off-topic but I promise it eventually loops back to the original topic.

So, earlier today I was playing Hyrule Warriors (Definitive Edition) with my sibling, and we were talking about Ravio's weapons being called "rental hammers" and how it would be funny if, afterwards when he went back to his own time, he put those hammers up for rent for stupid amounts of money because, quote, "they have blood from the enemies from the era of the fallen hero in their grains" because he couldn't get it out when he cleaned them and decided, fuck it. I can make bank from this. THAT turned into a conversation about Hyrule Warriors' non canon status, and I said something along the lines of, "if Hyrule Warriors was canon it could solve the timeline convergence problem."

My reasoning for that:

(*The "rock salt thing" is the fact that BotW's item description for rock salt references Wind Waker and basically says salt deposits like this exist bc of the Great Sea, despite this Hyrule. not being underwater. which raises some questions!)

I also posed the idea that, if you still dont want to consider HW canon for fun, you could just explain it by the Passage of Time. And just time in general.

THIS theory's explanation:

After Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass (both the same Link) is Spirit Tracks. Spirit Tracks takes place 100 years after WW and PH, and both of those games are like. pretty important to it

Spirit Tracks does not take place in the ocean. (For the most part at least. I don't know much about spirit tracks.) Instead, it's in "New Hyrule", which was founded by the previous hero and Tetra.

^ Basically they found a big ass fucking island (aka. a continent) and were like Yeah this looks like a good place to reinstate the monarchy.

So, even though Hyrule gets flooded in the adult timeline, we still end up with a Hyrule on land in that same timeline.

Slight topic change. BotW (and by extension TotK) is at the end of the timeline. At least 10,100* years after whichever game was most recent, and then some more to account for the first appearance of the Calamity. (Now. I personally am a fan of the theory that the events of 10k years ago actually took place before Skyward Sword (and these events are the Imprisoning War talked about in that game) but for the purposes of this theory we're ignoring that possibility.) (*More on this later.)

That's a lotta fuckin time. A lot can change in that amount of time.

Who's to say all three timelines didn't eventually end up in the same place? Kinda like the evening out of chaos states or whatever, I dunno I'm not a physicist.

And then. this is the part that circles back ok. Hylia, who is the Goddess of Time, just smushed them all back together into one because fuck it man, they're close enough.

I explained this by saying basically, that-

"Time doesnt work like that" as an argument for anything Zelda related is nullified by the simple fact that Hylia is the Goddess of Time and Nayru has significant power over time as well, and since they're both deities they can do whatever the hell they want with it. If Zelda, who is only channeling the powers of the Goddess Hylia via her blood, which—I don't know how goddess-turned-mortal blood works but this is probably a reasonable assumption—is diluted over tens of thousands of years, can go back 10k years, easy peasy lemon squeezy, then Hylia her-fucking-self can do as she pleases.

So the end conclusion to this one is that time can in fact work like that if an ultra powerful goddess of time wants it to.

And thus we circle back. (omg just like time travel,)

Now. All of this is to explain this idea: TotK is a closed loop, but only kind of. "What the hell do you mean by this, Cat," you might be asking. Well. It's simple.

Zelda's presence (in the past) and effects (on the future of that past) are guaranteed; her actions are not.

And what do I mean by that?

I mean that Zelda is guaranteed to time travel, and she is guaranteed to lead to the sealing of Ganondorf via Rauru's hand. This is to ensure the survival of Hyrule as it is in order for this Zelda to get to the point of this time travel in the first place—likely influenced by Hylia or other goddess to be this way so things stay stable. If this Ganondorf were to succeed, then. well. Hyrule would be screwed, because he"s kinda fucking overpowered with the secret stone.

(Now is "later".) (By the way—I don't know the full lore of TotK, but I'm pretty sure this all has to happen before the first Calamity. I would assume that the Calamity only existed as it did because this Ganondorf was under the castle; that's why the Calamity comes from/starts at the castle every time. so. Zelda actually would've gone back a good bit more than 10k years. Cool!)

Now. Whatever Zelda does to make that happen and whatever she does after doesn’t super affect the survival and state of Hyrule, for whatever reason. So, those actions are not guaranteed. Hence the whole dragon and Master Sword thing—the first set of bullet points in this post.

Oh yeah, and the light dragon also doesn't exist until Zelda time travels. That, or she's up above the clouds with all the sky islands, (which is probably the case, given the carvings behind the rocks in the intro section,) but I like the idea that, while that explanation is true for her, to everyone else she just appeared in the sky—similarly to how the glyphs have history but weren't present or documented till the Upheaval.

So, yeah. TotK is a sort of closed loop and that big sentence up there is what I mean by that. I bow dramatically, the crowd goes wild, etc etc.

Thoughts on Fear Gas? And how would you include it in your canon? (if that doesn't spoil)

I'm not the BIGGEST fan of the newest lore - for example, I kinda hate SL taking place after Fnaf 1, so I'm electing to ignore that! The fear gas I think is pretty unnecessary since we've already had the illusion discs for a LONG time. I think the gas is just maybe a first version of the discs or just a version that he can put in the animatronics to physically administer? FNaF 4 maybe having a diff protag will not be changing in my canon - it's still Evan/crying child! In the next chapter of The Infinite Sky (coming out in a couple of days), the fear gas/discs are going to be mentioned, and discs (and maybe gas now that it's canon?) are planned to be used in the future Another thing I don't care for is William kidnapping a kid for 10 years and running experiments? Like literally when he would've had time for his Mother Gothel era...he had like 3 businesses to run! It just makes him more evil but doesn't fit ANYWHERE into my au so I'm also just ignoring that, though Faz Ent might have some fun with that plot point instead...

tldr; gas will be vaguely mentioned but not be important at all! and the kidnapping plot will not be canon in william's backstory at ALL, not in TIS, Deprav, or HEoD. I like some lore implications of the new story but not a lot of them

You can keep the longsleeve stripped shirt, i would change the overshirt but you don't really have to, & as for the makeup keep the racoon eyes, just get rid of the little lines & black lipstick (mainly because of how makeup was done back in the early 2000s!)

Patton is. Also. A strange case of like "this isnt scene, i dont know what the hell it is" HEJEKWNEUKSJD. Again, I'd probably call it more... tik toks scenecore, but it's not really that either. No I get what the individual stories are about on their own, what continues to baffle me is that the film/stories are presented as a connected plot centred around there being Something Wrong With The House

in the trailer and description and stuff it heavily implied that it would be similar to other stories told by showing a couple of generations of occupants experiencing the same haunting years apart

I just think that they didn't convey what they wanted to very well with the house thing, cause in the first story it seemed to be materialism and making deals with the devil

The second one was fairly similar,

And then the third one was clinging to what little you had when everything else seems out of control,

Not mention the fact that the first story has humans but the second two were animals, which lead to a weird disconnect between the stories and a break in immersion while I tried to bring them back together

that's valid! and sorry this is a bit delayed i literally saw this just now, oops. unfortunately i have no comments on the trailer and description— i watched this completely blind one night only knowing it was psychological horror (?) and stop-motion. there definitely is a dissonance between each story, which COULD be unintentional considering that this movie had three directors! personally though, the dissonance carries meaning, and i'll get back to that.

the concept of the house being the thing that's wrong is true! but to me, the house having Something Wrong With It draws to the fact that it's more of a physical representation of each story's struggle, in multiple ways. notice how it's never actually the house making problems — only how characters interact with it

in the first short, raymond and penny idealize owning a new, fancy home. van schoonbeek holds their materialism over them by promising them a happier life— one only obtained through lush fabrics and decorated fireplaces. it's not the house itself, it's the idea that richer things mean richer lives. the only ones who notice the house's dubiousness are the children, who suffer the consequences of their parents' greed.

in the second short, mr. rat wants to sell a house he's been pouring his sweat and time and money into; he renovates out of his own pocket, he invests in dolling it up and making it look nice. but he only looks at it all from a surface level, hence the bug infestation— cheap solutions will do that to a man. he didn't think of it as a house, he thought of it as a goal with the intention of reaching perfection: something utterly buyable. obviously, ignoring all these problems lead to a massive infestation of rot

in the last short, rosa tries to make the house something it's not despite the circumstances around her. she wants a nice home, and that requires money, which requires tenants. she holds her wish to her heart, in spite of the flooding clearly being a bigger issue. she actively IGNORES the flooding, marking it as less of a problem than the peeling walls and the missing floorboards. she only let's it go when she realizes she CAN leave— she doesn't have to abandon her home to find new places, she needed to change her idea of what home IS to her. she didn't have control over a lot of things, but she could finally live with the house she'd been fighting against. realizing she might not have needed a house, but a ship: she moves on with the help of the people around her.

each story revolves around a house, but the focus isn't the house's effects on it's tenants— it's how each tenant chooses to live in it. there's dissonance because these are all different kinds of people, being stressed by different species being used, different eras, and different settings.

there really are lots of things i intentionally missed touching up on— the third story's ending possibly being a metaphor for death, the second story possibly being a whole delusion. i choose to do this because, well, they're all different interpretations. i spoke about the ones that i made on my own and that make the most sense to me, but those other perspectives are entirely possible and valid. they don't take away from the idea of the house being a manifestation of each character's struggle/flaw either!

in the end, The House is about our relationship with homes. it's about how our living spaces change us, represent us, but more importantly: how it reflects our ideals. in the pursuit of a perfect home, an ideal house, we lose ourselves in logistics and materialism— we lose the spirit of home. it's a problem that crosses boundaries and leaves no person untouched. everyone can experience it, everyone handles it differently. but in the end, the last tenant of the house puts to rest the cycle we've seen progress throughout the film. she finds home in her friends instead of constantly pursuing a house where she PLANS to make memories in. in a way, they DID all experience the same haunting. the haunting was... an empty, hollow life with even more hollowed ideals.

jimin (of bts) has recently had a comeback and theres a lot of analyzations about the choreo and the photographs, that hint at him being bisexual. since park jimin is a household name i think that regardless if knetz see the hints at his sexuality its more likely to be (i dont want to say accepted, more like recognized) by the overall media. and if jimin were to actually come out as bisexual (its not confirmed he is, hes just been dropping a lot of hints, it can also be to make the cb ‘interesting’ and to draw in more fans, but that seems unlikely to me, since hes alr so popular and the korean society recognizes that, if it could open new doors for lgbt koreans, and maybe jaedo??

The actors and singers who came out in US lost their insane popularity. In Russia we had a period with Tatu (fake, but still acting like lesbians), openly gay singers (they didn't label themselves, but the make up and the dress told what needed to be told), gender study professors in Moscow universities. It's all gone now. The professors and the stars dissapeared. It is benefitial for the elites to make a monster out of LGBT now, as "we are back to OUR TRADITIONS, which means patriarchy and the church".

So maybe there will be a period when Korean elites will be lenient about what happens on TV, look the other way. Comes a new president, a stonger push from the religious organisations in the future? Will the "new era" stay?

If you watch Korean variety shows you can notice some openly flamboyant or mannered judges, guests. They don't really hide, they just don't put lables on themselves, they stay "like everyone else" and "don't make a ruckus".

diff anon here and yeah i hate to say it but i have to agree unfortunately. i never in a million years would have imagined that my main concern for lisa's solo era would be about her performing. the lack of promo could be ignored if the performances were giving more but they're just not rn. i feel like i'm in an alternate reality even saying that bcs over the years she has shown that she has that shit down. performing is her best asset. this shouldn't be an issue for her. it should be the thing that is drawing people to her but they're not bcs they can't fucking hear her. she still has the stage presence ofc but for the love of god someone needs to fix the audio settings!!!! get a new sound engineer omfg!!!!! lisa has had years of consistently excellent performances with universally positive reactions (ignoring the bitter antis ofc) and now over the past 9 months every performance has been (rightfully) criticized and for the same thing too: that mf mic is not loud enough!!! it doesn't matter how many amazing performances she has done in the past, due to her recent ones she is already being labelled as a bad performer. it is already affecting her reputation. if she doesn't bring her A game to coachella, she's in real trouble here

the comparison to lsrfm in this situation is fitting too bcs their week 1 livestream had no backtrack and, just like lisa, they're known for their performances not vocals and so they both need that backtrack and shouldn't really perform without it. so my biggest fear is that the coachella livestream won't play the backtrack, but at the same time i'm also scared the backtrack will be too loud, just as it has been for every other livestreamed lisa performance over this past year. vmas is a great example bcs it didn't matter that she *was* actually singing audibly live bcs you couldn't hear that at all on the livestream so people thought she lip synced even when she didn't and she got a lot of shit for it. if the backtrack settings aren't correct it will not be good for lisa and there is a 99% chance that will be the case unless lloud start fixing it. like you said, the backlash will be worse than lsrfm bcs people love to jump on the bp members. we will never her the end of it. if this coachella performance goes badly for lisa it would kind of be the nail in the coffin for her i fear

completely agree (unfortunately) :| fixing her breath control won't matter much unless they also fix her mic - however a part of me wonders whether the decision to keep the mic so low compared to the backtrack comes from her camp because they are hesitant about her live singing skills ...... also, i still firmly stand by my opinion that if her performances were more impressive and more intricate, the lip sync would matter much. there were issues for the vs performance as well (to be expected tho), but i don't remember there being much discourse about it because the rest of the performance was great for everybody! her coachella performance will be nitpicked and scrutinized by everyone and if she lip syncs even for a second she will be berated for it so she might as well show off some intricate complex impressive dance routines that shut everybody up

I didn’t have to grow up hearing about the other terms like “the me generation” from boomers to just have people accept some bland marketing term. Is Sean Marks Good at the Draft?

Now that the draft is over (and notice that my predictions were pretty spot on!), it might be time to reflect. I agree with the consensus that we picked up a few good, undervalued players in Dariq Whitehead, Noah Clowney, and Jalen Wilson. And like every year, I find myself emotionally invested in these guys’ development.

The critical consensus seems to be that Sean Marks is good at the draft, and I’ve always agreed. After all, he salvaged Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen, and Nic Claxton. Pretty impressive, right?

Well, maybe. Let’s try to look at the issue objectively.

Here’s a list of Sean Marks’s major picks* since he took over. And here’s an explanation of the chart:

·      VORP is Value Over Replacement Player (a career points-above-average derived from BPM).

·      VRnk is the player’s ranking for career VORP among players in that draft (for example, LeVert has had the 12th best career from the 2016 Draft)

·      VRnk Diff is the difference between their Pick number (Rnk) and their career VRnk. In other words, LeVert was the 20th pick, but has had the 12th best career based on VORP, so he’s performed 8 spots better than how he was expected to do.

·      Net? Does he still play for the Nets?

Huh. What to make from this list? Four of eight of Marks’s picks have done better than expected. But four others have played a little worse than expected. Marks’s drafting record is only great if we arbitrarily choose to ignore players like Musa and Kurucs who didn’t play up to their potential.

Also, most of these guys don’t play for us anymore. True, LeVert and Allen proved to be valuable trade assets: but were we much better in the Durant-Harden-Irving era than we would have been if we’d kept and continued to develop them? Surprisingly, maybe not.

If we step back and look at Marks’s drafting skills, I think we’d have to call them pretty average, don’t you think?

Of course, that might be true of every general manager in the long run.

this might be long and rambly as shit but since u asked 😋 i really am SAURRRRR excited!!! i really have forgotten what svt cbs were like bc i got so incredibly busy but im SOOO so glad i'm here for it again <33 i haven't participated in anything else like i used to before (i.e: watching all the interviews, keeping up w/ all the appearances n shit 😭), so i haven't seen anything else aside from the mv & medley/did anything aside from listening to the whole EP. HOWEVER!! i can definitely say it well exceeded my expectations! for me svt comebacks just kept getting bigger and better since attacca, and honestly the pre-cb hype and General Good Vibes we were getting from that era just kept getting carried over their more recent releases! i'm glad there's that kind of energy (on my end at least) with their cbs!! and honestly, i'm so so happy to see them getting the recognition their unceasing hard work deserves. they're not a loud group, if that makes sense (like, when u ask ppl outside of korea abt kpop groups they most likely would not mention svt off the bat), but they really are so stable and they're only consistently getting bigger not only because of all the work, but also because of how well they just treat carats as well. it really does feel like we're a team to a certain extent 🥹

likewise i appreciate your take too, again my perspective is definitely shaped by bad personal experiences and an acknowledgement that it's at least somewhat a consequence of the era i've grown up in i.e. where private and specialized media has steadily become the norm. like i said i totally get the tv as a communal thing but it only works if everyone is on board imo, and it sounds like there's a mutual understanding of sharing and ease in your situation and that's virtually never been the case in my experience, the tv is either on because one or two people want to watch something or just on for the hell of it

for me there's often a total removal of even the chance of meaningful community when the tv is on because actual interpersonal conversation or interaction is either too distracted / dominated by the Screen Events to happen at all at worst or tinged with a constant background noise and visual that's just totally unnecessary at best (i also admit i'm not a person who needs background noise so naturally that shapes my opinion too). but to your point i think with how private media is becoming it kinda reflects how fucking oversaturated our personal lives are with media and noises and images and that increasingly makes me want my community interactions to be, like, real human interactions, again with the caveat that if all parties have an understanding and desire of consciously consuming media in a communal way then that's awesome

I’ve never encountered anyone who shares this pet peeve so I think it’s obscure but man I hate televisions, and I mean really loathe them. and I think it’s to do with coming of age in an era of media hyper-specialization + unpleasant experiences, because often what annoys me about tvs is when everyone is suddenly subjected to what one person wants to see, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear, and often tvs are placed to be focal centerpieces of the room and increasingly more enormous, so everyone is visually subject to it as well. but another thing is for some reason it’s considered normal for a bunch of households to just have the tv on essentially all the time, and I get that in theory that’s functionally no worse than staring at your phone or laptop all day, but in those cases it’s usually not being actively engaged with by any particular person, it’s just disrupting any quiet and being a distraction in what should be the most welcoming part of the space, where now everyone is either having to passively experience it or remove themselves from the space to get away from it

and to be fair if a group of people are all in agreement and enthusiastic about watching the same thing then hell yeah the tv is the best place to do it, get that shit huge in the living space set up to be casual and comfy. but otherwise the giant loud bright rectangle needs to retract into the wall and be covered up by a beautiful painting unless everyone inserts their control launch keys and turns them simultaneously

MAGICAL PRINCE MAGNUS AHHHHHHHH okay so obviously prince magnus>>>> because the aesthetic of prince magnus in fancy clothes, with an intricate crown and beautiful jewellery!!! also it means we can get courtship! and political intrigue! he still has magic because i say so!! also because magnus is so perfect he’d be the type of prince with a great relationship with his people so we’d get magnus being the sweetheart he is! also prince magnus overthrowing his father, the tyrannical king asmodeus????? UGH PERFECTION!!!!!! also i’d like to think that after asmodeus is overthrown, magnus still is not yet of age to be crowned king so ragnor (his older cousin, and no dont ask how they’re related) is the regent but really magnus has a lot of input in the ruling and ragnor is there as more of a formality and an advisor to magnus? cat, raphael, and dot are also members of the royal court and are magnus’ closest advisors and they have their own little family you know? also magnus’ mom died of a sickness when magnus was young and it was tragic and he was really broken by it because he loved his mother so much. so asmodeus tries to raise magnus to be the perfect weapon but thanks to his heart of gold and his found family, he doesn’t become the monster his father says he is. he wants to lead his kingdom to greatness, and do his best to help his people recover from asmodeus’ rule and move forward. 

WARRIOR PRINCE ALEC HELL YEAH so with alec i like the idea of him being the crown prince of a neighbouring kingdom and he and magnus meet and it’s like Instant Sparks and they fall in love at first sight, as they tend to do, and it’s amazing. alec would be the prince who has a reputation of being stoic and cold and closed off but he’s just under the weight of all the expectations you know? plus i feel like his kingdom would be a kingdom of warriors and so he’s also excellent in combat and gets a reputation as an amazing archer and strategist. and it’s hard to please the lightwood parents who are forever comparing alec to jace and belittling him, and it’s tough but he does it for izzy and max, so they don’t take the pain. (alec lightwood is the best big brother ever). and he’s got all these ideas to open up idris and form proper alliances with the neighbouring kingdoms, to unify and bring peace to his people.  

FANCY ROYAL BALL FOR LIKE SOMEONE’S ENGAGEMENT IDK IT’S NOT RELEVANT BUT THAT IS WHERE MALEC MEET it’s the 18th birthday of idk clary who’s a princess of some other kingdom idk it’s not relevant the exact occasion and the only thing that matter is this is where all the romance get set up! so it’s a big diplomatic thing and the leader and/or their heirs are expected to attend and magnus goes to represent edom with the immortal squad, and alec is there with izzy (and jace but they just ignore him after he runs after some poor girl to dance wth her). alec exchanges pleasantries with a few of the other guests but he’s not really there for gossip, trying to discuss alliances and trade agreements. magnus is asked to dance by many suitors, but he’s not looking to start a relationship nor to fuel the rumour mill so he politely declines and carries on mingling and soon enough the two princes meet and it’s like magic. magnus makes a terribly cheesy pun in response to a stranger at the bar’s sarcastic retort at some pompous duke and oh no he’s hot!!!! they both smile and introduce themselves with a distinct lack of effortless flair for magnus, or the calm composure typical of alec. they get to talking and it’s easy to see that neither of them have experienced this kind or ease and comforting familiarity when talking to someone outside of their inner circles. 

whilst magnus and alec are falling in love over the course of a conversation, there is some hilarious shenanigans as maia, raphael, meliorn, and simon find themselves tangled in a love quadrangle as they all feel so drawn to one another, taking turns to dance with one another before retreating to their friend groups to be like “they are all so beautiful and sweet and kind please help!!!!” and so ensues one of the most elaborate slow burn romances the royal courts have seen in ages (the betting pool is also exceptionally large and is won by meliorn who with raphael, started more than half the rumours in order to stir the pot and collect the winnings and spoil their partners). 

so anyway back to malec, they talk and have a few drinks and all is well and good and still pretty calm until alec picks up the way magnus is swaying to the music and tapping his feet to the beat, so alec asks magnus to dance and leads him to the dancefloor where they dance the night away, alec more than happy to twirl magnus around the dancefloor and make him giggle and blush, showing him off to everyone else. realising that they’ve attracted quite a fair bit of attention, they decide to steal away to an empty garden and continue dancing in the moonlight, the night is pure and utter perfection, and they part somewhat reluctantly, wanting to spend more time with one another, but also eager for the next day where they have agree to spend the day together. alec steels himself to press a brief, sweet, chaste kiss to magnus’ cheek before leaving to escort a tired and tipsy isabelle back to their guest chambers. magnus is left blushing, hand pressed to his cheek where alec’s warm lips pressed a gentle kiss that gave him butterflies.

COURTSHIP!!!! i desperately need courtship rituals!! like alec sending magnus elaborate flower arrangements with sweet, affectionate messages in flower language, magnus sending alec charmed tokens like a simple necklace or leather bracelet that has protective and healing spells woven into it!! them sending love letter to one another! they spend a lot of time together at social events and at “diplomacy meetings” where yes, they do discuss trade and alliances and what not but also it’s an excuse for them to spend at least a week with one another in either kingdom and they go on picnic dates on palace grounds, sneak out of their rooms at night to stargaze, wander through towns and eat street food (and alec always buys magnus little gifts and tokens that remind him of his love) and they train together, teaching each other the fighting styles of their respective kingdoms, and yes, there is a gratuitous alec teaching magnus archery scene because im fucking weak!!! and alec likes to hang out in the royal apothecary in edom and watch magnus make a whole bunch of cool potions, invent spells, and write magical theory. magnus in turn, is very fond of going to the training sessions of idris’ elite warriors–the shadowhunters, to watch alec obliterate a whole bunch of soldiers at various combat skills. 

BATTLE COUPLE!!!!!! so they’re together for months and all is good but then valentine happens and has been getting his forces gathered during this whole thing and even before it (im just stupid and forgot to mention it sdkfvbabhvjabv) and anyway he attacks!! and the crown princes of idris and edom unite, together with the other young royals from the neighbouring kingdoms and their armies to defeat valentine. and the two of them are damn near impossible to beat, alec with his honed-from-birth warrior skills, and magnus with his proficiency in both magical and non-magical combat. and it goes well at first but then the tides turn and they have to split up and they part and it’s this moment of “i don’t know if we’ll survive this” and they almost go tosay i love you but then alec is like “i’ll tell you when we survive this, so please come back to me, and i’ll come back to you” and they’re both crying a little but they share one last kiss before separating.

the battle ends and they’re desperate to find each other, tearing through the battlefield to find their love. and they finally see each other and run into each other’s arms, both looking a little worse for wear, and they pull away from the embrace long enough for alec to blurt out “i love you” with so much conviction and surety that magnus subconsciously shakes his head, disbelieving that someone could love him of all people, before confessing his own love for alec. they kiss and it feels like relief and home and hope.

so they recover from the battle and they mourn their fallen, celebrate their victories, and bring justice to the invaders. this young generation of leaders more or less formally ascends to power and usher in a new era of peace, collaboration, and unity (the fact that there are so many inter-kingdom royal romances certainly doesn’t hurt the alliance)

in this time of peace, cat and dot get married and adopt madzie, the polycule are living their best lives, and izzy gets together with clary. 

magnus and alec continue their courtship for a couple more years until they both turn of age to be crowned kings. alec plans an elaborate proposal that sweeps magnus off his feet and just a month after their respective coronations, they marry and their kingdoms are merged as one. and they all lived happily ever after

BNHA Rewatch Season 1 Episode 12 “All Might”

Now to the climax for S1! I’m pretty sure this is the episode (or rather the moment) that made BNHA. The big scene from S1 that showed the world It was Here and the potential it had for the future.

All Might makes his dramatic entrance. I do love how much this series puts an emphasis on the importance, not just of physically saving people, but giving them reassurance that everything’s gonna be ok. The way he carries Aizawa here is very sweet (changed a bit from the manga, where it’s a little less delicate).

Tomura makes this speech that All Might confirms is just him bullshitting but is actually a really interesting notion. “Why do some people decide that some violence is heroic and others are villainous” is a line that pops into my head a lot when I’m watching other franchises. The whole “Protagonist centered morality” thing. It doesn’t really apply to BNHA that much, but there’s a lot of other narratives out there that could use a reality check in that regard. 

This shot looks like a selfie. Deku is the worst at keeping a secret. Carolina is one of all Might’s attacks i really like, because it’s kind of creative and unique. I love the little setup of the fight against Nomu - how they lay out the conditions, and All Might still works within them to pull out a win anyway. That’s BNHA for ya. 

Deku figuring out that All Might needs help...first time around I was waiting for Deku to do something appropriately climactic for the end of the season, and disappointed he didn’t get to. 

But what we do get is pretty striking. On the one hand, we see Deku’s strengths as a character, the inability to ignore someone in need, that burning desire to help that he tries to reason himself out of. On the other hand, he charges in with no plan, and thinks mostly about how much he still needs All Might to teach him, thinking more of his own needs than his mentor’s...this isn’t the moment for him to save his mentor. 

And look who’s pulling off his first Save to Win! Congratulations Kacchan, you did your first good deed in the entire series! While being a grump about it but still, thank you for saving Deku.  

And also being badass AF. Kacchan, Shoto and Kiri making their dramatic entrances. Shoto is just so good at ice stuff guys. Bakugou being smart and outwitting Kurogiri. They’re just too cool for school. (also this angle makes Kacchan look like he has breasts. He’s oddly androgynous sometimes). 

Tomura, of course, is not an idiot and recognizes this, telling Nomu to take Bakugou out so they can go home. I notice Todoroki gets this really panicked look on his face when they make that announcement (probably because Nomu is escaping his ice) but in my head it’s because he’s worried for Bakugo. Small Todobaku sideship here, ngl.  

And Tomura’s full speech on heroes and violence comes in. All Might seems to indicate he’s just trying this philosophy out for size; while I still do remember this speech and find it fascinating in the context of other stories, for Tomura it’s obviously not what he thinks. He doesn’t care. He’s a villain without an ideology. Which is a big part of the diff between him and Stain, which Deku notices. There’s a lot to unpack with Tomura now, isn’t there, the light of the most recent arc? I guess I’ll get to that when I get to it.

YSR is swelling. All Might is going to go beyond. It’s time. We’re here. Thinking about it, this fight feels like the Camino Ward fight in a slightly smaller format. (the whole arc is basically just Baby’s first Camino). There are similar lines, but one bit that sticks out to me is that All Might begins this fight thinking about how he’s a symbol, and in the Camino Fight thinks “I’m not doing this because I’m a symbol” or something like that. Character growth!

And now the bit that launched a thousand memes. For some reason, every YSR Goes with Everything Vid I see uses this specific scene, quotes from it, inserted with whatever it’s being paired with. I guess this is the moment everyone associates with YSR, even though it’s in a ton of episodes. But yes, this particular scene does feel like it captures the whole YSR spirit quite well. 

“Those aren’t just random punches either. They’re targeted. And everyone single one of them...is more than 100% of his power!” “You may have heard these words before, but I’ll so you what they really mean. Go beyond...plus ultraaaaaaaaa!!” (It’s basically the same ideas in the sub, but those are the specific words they used in the dub. They’ve become as much of a meme as YSR itself.)

And it’s so interesting as a way to beat the villain. It’s kind of both outwitting him and out-powering him. Like the appeal of FMA & DBZ combined. 

Basically this episode is amazing. I think I kind of breezed through the whole USJ arc in a day the first time, so it didn’t stick out to me. But on a rewatch it’s a real highly. Very focused on it’s one subject and absolutely astounding to watch and hear. YSR + Fight is always a win. This one always puts a smile on my face.

Save to win. Win to save. Katsuki saving Deku is such a quiet moment here, you don’t really notice it, but don’t think I didn’t notice that the first time Bakugou ever saved anyone in the series, it happened to be Deku (and vice versa). The important thing to remember here is that Deku is the one who most consistently brings out the best in Bakugou, as well as the worst.  

“Kacchan! People who aren’t as important because they’re not Kacchan!”  

Deku’s little yell of “Kacchan” is just a small preview of the Training camp Arc-era panic. Dude’s protective. And also loves taking any opportunity he can to gush as well. (And Bakugou refuses to be complimented for something he didn’t do. I kinda admire him too for that) Speaking of the training camp arc, I get some of those “responsible for All Might’s end” vibes from him here.

Holy crap Bakugou is thin. Curvier than half the girls. Anyway, Deku observing him as always.
