Weird Egg?

Okay so in theory, Obi-Wan was plausibly on Mandalore when Anakin was born, right?

(this is technically a variation on a few other fics and AUs I've seen, and I'll list the stuff that came to mind at the end.)

While on Mandalore, Obi-Wan finds An Egg while hiding in a cave with Satine. And he doesn't recognize it, and Satine doesn't recognize it, and even Qui-Gon doesn't recognize it.

Which makes it weird, at the very least, and probably rare. It's the size of his HEAD and even though there's no parent around, the egg is… warm, now? He didn't notice at first, but it's definitely producing at least some of its own heat.

So Obi-Wan brings the egg with him, which is a pain in the ass in terms of maneuvering, but they do seem to have better luck avoiding Death Watch than before, which uh. Given that the egg feels warmer when they're getting lucky, and seems to glow in the Force, they think might not be a coincidence. A lucky rock, except it's alive.

Mission ends. Obi-Wan plans to take the egg back to the temple for study in case they just discovered Something, and as he's saying goodbye to Satine… the egg Hatches.

It is a dragon.

The dragon can project words into Obi-Wan's mind. It's not quite capable of complex thoughts yet, but it's a he (probably), and has a name (Anakin!), and considers the person who's been carrying him and protecting him and keeping him warm for the past six months to be his mom!

Obi-Wan protests at this. Qui-Gon decides to make his life harder with the 'correction' that Obi-Wan would be a dad, not a mom.

So now Obi-Wan has a small dragon which will be growing to the size of a house, that imprinted on him and is following him home and calling him dad and insisting on sleeping in his bed

Idk if you've ever read Septimus Heap, but… the MC of that found a Fancy Rock, put it in his bag, carried it around for a YEAR because he kept forgetting to take it out of his bag, and then it hatched into a dragon. And I kept thinking about that the whole time I wrote this.

In Obi-Wan's defense, he does Have A Plan.

Until the dragon hatches, turns out to be a sapient as a toddler (with promise of growth), and calls him Dad.

And now the plan is gone.

He just wanted to bring a cool egg back to the Temple for study!

And now the Mandalorians are pulling out old books about whatever the fuck this is because these things APPARENTLY went extinct around the same time as the underwater dragon-adjacent thing that is the Mythosaur.

Obi-Wan learns that supposedly the eggs are inert until something with the Force interacts with it in a Purposeful Manner.

Which includes "probing it a little to see if whatever is inside is actually alive."

Anakin's a standard western dragon that can breathe fire because Flyte. Also this post.

Obviously, first up is the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage, specifically Magyk and Flyte.

The fic series I was thinking of initially that kind of jumpstarted the AU process was Boga Service Varactyl AU, but specifically Kenobi Kafé Service Animal Boga AU.

I've been seeing a couple of dragon shapeshifter AUs, including that post I linked earlier from @ahsoka-in-a-hood, @bubblew0lf1's dragon shapeshifter AU, and @squad-724's Dragon Jedi AU has been all over my dash for the past few days.

Stubborn to the Bones by @tideswept, which was part of what had me connecting the various dots of Obi-Wan Finding Animal Anakin on a mission, though our outcomes are admittedly very different lol. (Their fic is shippy, and mine is more decidedly gen/familial with a slight nod to Obitine.)

Poolverine thoughts

So I've just returned from watching Deadpool and Wolverine for like...the 8th? 9th time now? And I have thoughts about how the filmmakers chose to portray the evolution of their relationship -- some of them may already have been pointed out by others on this site, but this is my attempt to summarise them!

Also mostly I'm putting myself in Logan's shoes and writing this from his perspective?

Spoilers below cut:

We know that Wade has always made comments about Logan, even from the first film eg 'whose balls do I have to fondle to get this movie made?'. He might sound like he hates the guy, but obviously there's respect there, and he showed it in a Wade way. We know that by the third film, Wade wants to matter. He wants to be an Avenger, and almost regretted that even the X-Men didn't even want him. He prooobably almost nearly gagged when he spoke in earnest about how Logan has always been viewed as the X-Man in his world, but the respect is there. (And perhaps that's why he doesn't 'hit on' Logan as much as compared to Cable, Colossus et al? And all the 'shippy' comments were made by other characters in the film eg: bartender 'are you gonna fuck or fight?' or Cassandra's 'you two are cute'?)

The song choices when Logan and Wade interact, from AC/DC's Hell's Bells when they fight for the first time (fair, because Logan doesn't know Wade that well yet), to Avril Lavigne's I'm With You ('Take me by the hand, take me somewhere new/I don't know who you are but I, I'm with you') when they're driving in the Odyssey, which again, quite apt? And 'also the line 'take me home' in the Avril Lavigne song, which probably reflects Logan not really knowing who Wade is but just -- going along with the ride, as if asking Wade, just take me home, find me a place for me to belong. The theme of home recurs again and again, which leads one to wonder why it's not so surprising that Logan did end up following Wade home in the end???' Plus, 'You're the one that I want' when they're having that heavy makeout sesh intimate fight scene in the Honda? Let's not even talk about the 'Like a Prayer' scene, which again. 'When you call my name, and it feels like home.' Again. Home.

Which then leads to Logan, who confessed to Cassandra that he 'turned away' when 'they called for him', and he didn't make that mistake again when Wade called out his name at the end. While Aretha Franklin's 'You're All I Need to Get By' plays in the background. Yep.

Let's not forget the fact that Logan, after the fight in the Odyssey (despite all the boohooing and ongoing alcoholic misery afterwards), picked up the photograph of Wade's 'world', and returned it to Wade. Man doesn't want to show or say it during the second and third act but he CARES. A LOT!

Logan repeating Wade's words, verbatim, twice! ('You didn't lie, you made an educated wish'), and 'I'm an X-Men. I'm the X-Men')

Logan telling Wade that he wished Wade would die alone, then ending up making sure that Wade wouldn't have to die alone.

Logan keeping the suit on him at all times, only to have it get destroyed at the climax of the film - which, sad, because yes it's the only thing that reminds him of the X-Men of his world, but it could also be an analogy of -- he needs to move on. And he did! He wanted to be free, and he told this as much to Cassandra, and he did become free, in the end!

On the subject of Cassandra, she promised Logan that she could 'silence everything'. The joke's on her, because Logan found himself trading peace (as silence), for peace (as a chaotic, loud motormouth). He found his home, and it's with Wade.

On the subject of peace and home -- Logan is pretty much an immortal being, and a lot of his issues may have stemmed from the trauma of losing people he cares about, or people who got close to him, even for like 5 seconds (evidenced by ALL THE X-MEN MOVIES). He carried that with him throughout this movie, with all the references of saving the world, saving Wade's world, getting home, etc etc -- the point being, he did it for Wade, in the end (never mind Wade's educated wish that the TVA would restore Logan's past). And despite doing it for Wade, Logan was rewarded by having Wade AND Laura in his life now; both pretty much people who can't die, as part of his family. At least he will always have them -- and isn't that freeing and peaceful enough???

Last but not least -- as a circular thing, I'm going back to my first point. Wade spent the whole movie wanted to matter. In the end, he finds out that he does matter -- not just to his 'old world', but also to Logan. And be it just mutual respect, which then blooms into friendship, fondness, maybe more -- the point is: Wade does matter. To Logan. A character he spent the previous two films talking about despite not featuring at all in those movies. How do I know this you ask? Yes, Logan wanted to sacrifice himself for Wade. But more importantly, he followed Wade home. And at the end, after multiple groans, and frowns, and curses, he SMILED! AND LAUGHED! At Wade's stupid jokes!

I'm probably reading too much into their relationship and how they were written, and maybe it wasn't even Ryan's intention, but goddamn Hugh and Ryan made their chemistry/friendship bleed onto the screen, no matter how they were initially written in the script.

i think the reason theres a lot of discourse about liking max and whether or not its okay when people like lots of other characters that suck (i.e. ted or the jerris) is that a lot of max's major fans tend to overly woobify him and mischaracterize him as much nicer then he actually is. people do sometimes woobify these other characters a little (for example i rly dont think ted would be as much of a caring big brother as a lot of the fandom (including me sometimes) write him as lol) but theyll at least acknowledge theyre assholes and mostly write them as much, max's stans characterize him as a poor uwu baby thats onlyy kindaa mean bc of his dad and he would have stopped bullying the nerds right away if he did die at the waylon place promise !! meanwhile in canon yes he might have a shitty dad but thats no excuse for the fact that he *torments* his classmates. people forget bullying is a form of abuse and he verbally and physically abuses his victims and controls his friends behavior and forces them into acting the same way (who actually apologize for their bullying unlike max lol) im not gonna say its immoral to like his character, both if you like his character for what he is which is a piece of shit with a lot of funny lines or if its for the uwu little baby version you made up in your head but if its the second its important to acknowledge thats not what his character is in any way at all like max is a horrible person, its fine to like a character thats a horrible person but i think if you like them for the nice person youve invented its time to come up with a different character to like. and also maybe seriously analysis if it comes from a place of obsessing over any white guy character bc it really feels like it, when shipping jason and richie makes more sense if you wanna ship richie with a jock character but ppl still ship him with the guy he has no interactions with any kind of shippy chemistry, and when a lot of the people that do this will not acknowledge graces trauma and depth and just dissmiss her as "evil"

What is your Giroda/Avicinda take?

(Oops this got really long and rambly...)

So first off, to me their dynamic is rooted in their narrative positions at the start of the story and how they reverse places by the end of it. It's not just for ship purposes, but it is where my shipping them comes from (though I apologize if most of this ends up not being very shippy-like because, to be honest, that aspect is actually pretty secondary to how I think of them as a pair!)

The main thing is that while Giroda replaces Chigda in their society, I think Avicinda is a more direct foil to him.

With how faewish sprites place importance on family/heritage/lineage, it seems to me Kuroda's (falsely tarnished) name shaping the way Giroda was treated by the other sprites mirrors the way Avicinda's lineage shaped him. I feel like there's a lot of angsty fun that could be had with this parallel? Also IMHO Avicinda's description of his family's prior duties didn't necessarily mean his entire family were all knights, but he chose "Whim and swordsmanship" to be the "strongest" servant, and so ends up as Captain of the Paladins serving a fake god while neglecting service to his fellow sprites. Contrast with Giroda who is descended from a knight but was barred from becoming one formally while doing everything to help those around him. And of course, by the end of the story they've swapped positions with Giroda as leader of the sprites and Avicinda having a poorer reputation (though he doesn't seem to be as hated as Chigda is).

And they even literally swap places with Avicinda being locked up in the same cavern Giroda was kept in while Giroda moves into the temple that Avicinda was previously one of the only sprites allowed entry to—

So how it could develop as a ship:

1. Avicinda/Giroda could get pretty dark quick if it happens before or during the main story, considering Avicinda's position of power and Giroda's desires to be a knight...in the very organization Avicinda controls. Being so spiteful to Giroda specifically, I can imagine he'd dangle the promise of knighthood over Giroda as an extra way to torment him and let off some stress from serving Chigda on top of other things he'd claim as all part of punishing Giroda, because Giroda as the traitor's descendant is the antithesis to his knighthood. On Giroda's part, I've always thought that while he might truly hate Avicinda for all he's done to him, Giroda would on some level still be seeking his approval, because Avicinda as the concept of a paladin is his ideal at that point. This is, of course, the perfect recipe for a very nasty relationship to form.

2. Post-story, I can't imagine it happening until several decades or even centuries have passed. I'm fond of imagining that Giroda will one day be the one to come find Avicinda on a quiet night to tell him he should rest. Because Avicinda in my mind is the type of character who decides that he must atone eternally and then never actually forgives himself and never gives himself a chance to breathe ever again. Considering how black and white faewish sprites seem to view the world, an older, wiser Giroda who has been Wish Master for a long time might become the only other sprite to understand him and even remember or care about why he's doing what he does. Bonus: "moron" for old times' sake, but affectionate.

3. AFAIK we don't know how old any of the faewish sprites are definitively other than just vaguely knowing some of them must have been alive for a long long time, but I am under the impression that due to the timeline of when Chigda took over as Wish Master versus when Giroda's parents were sent off to hard labor, Giroda is actually much older than implied? And was maybe actually locked in that cavern for centuries??? (I might be wrong about this bit of Giroda's lore and need to go and dig up more of the books again and rewatch some quest scenes...) And Avicinda is relatively much younger as the rest of his family seems to have died out since the days of the Wishing One.

Point is, if all of the above were true, what if...Giroda escaped before Chigda picked out Avicinda to be his knight and sent those esselings after him (that it was a setup by Chigda is headcanon). What if Giroda and Avicinda met out in the mountains before all that!!! What if they became friends (and then lovers hehe) due to their shared ideals of knighthood and serving the Wishing One. Giroda thinks Avicinda is so cool for training Whim/swordsmanship everyday and asks him to teach him. This not-yet-a-knight Avicinda thinks of Kuroda as a traitor but doesn't know yet that Giroda is his grandson, so as far as he knows Giroda is just a sprite he's never met before who happens to be just like him! And yes of course he'll teach him how to use a sword and become a powerful stylist.

(Chigda is probably going to sabotage this, but they can be happy while it lasts.)

4. And for that "No Nikki" AU where Avicinda and Giroda team up and do the Swordsmith Ruins together, Giroda gets to watch Avicinda's faith in Chigda shatter and the self-loathing start, just as Avicinda gets to watch Giroda become what he always thought he was going to be. There's some resentment, but Giroda doesn't let that grow. He needs Avicinda's help here to take the fight to Chigda and right what he's done wrong, and maybe after some much needed introspection, Avicinda takes on the mantle of turning the paladins against Chigda while Giroda evacuates the other sprites before joining the fight.

Giroda still gets elected as the new Wish Master, but this time he asks Avicinda to stay as Captain of the Paladins. And Avicinda who might have left to look for a new purpose in life if not asked, ends up agreeing. He stays, and quickly becomes devoted to Giroda. Maybe he's just shifting his need for a target to swear an oath to onto someone new, but in the process he ends up symbolically becoming Giroda's shield instead of how he was as Chigda's sword. And Giroda as Wish Master gets to direct that knightly energy somewhere productive for the sake of all faewish sprite society this time.

My Resident Evil muses are heavily affiliated with my friend's ( cautionsissued ), since we've done lots of plotting together for them. So her muses Chris, Claire, Carlos, Mia, Rose and Sherry are my mains. But if you write one of those characters too, don't worry, I still will rp with you, it just won't be set in my main/default verse but in a different one. I'm always open to plotting and starting new au's as stated above, that being said-- never let me having a main for a certain character discourage you from writing with me!

I tend to get a little carried away while writing replies sometimes, but never feel like you have to match the length of said replies! Quality over quantity always. :’)

Both about one another. A sort of light hearted song being far more sentimental toward the other for their fears and doubts. Taking it in baby steps and promising to be there for each other and how they care regardless of where those feelings take them.

“Boba Date” by Kimmy

Nepeta POV! Just a cute very in character date idea for Nepeta who most agree would be a filthy weeb — plus she canonically loves tea! This could work for any Nepeta ship. I like to imagine maybe Nepeta eventually makes a little cafe in the new world for artists and writers and people just trying to catch a nice vibe. Bringing Sollux here only to tell him it’s all on the house… what? I said this was self-indulgent!!!

“Hot” by Avril Lavigne

Nepeta POV! Just a song for all of her big romantic shippy f33lings!!! The opening line is “oof” and might give the false impression that this is a more yandere route. It’s best to put “I wanna lock you into a closet” on the same level as “I could just eat you up” or something. The rest is her just gushing about Sollux and how crazy about him she is, wanting to do anything and everything with him. I like to think at this point in the relationship it’s actually been over a year since they’ve hooked up, Sollux is in a much better place in his life and she’s gushing over watching him thrive and how they thrive together.

“Emergency” by Paramore

Once again Nepeta POV and depending on the circumstances this could fit other ships, however this is the first song I feel especially world for them. In my head this is a conflict involving his past loves Aradia and Feferi (particularly Aradia; since while I love him and Fef infinitely more I acknowledge that Aradia keeps him firmly pinned in his grief) and Sollux is still going through the motions. He should be healed and over it by now he thinks but Nepeta knows better. She’s more in tune with her feelings. She knows how Sollux must have suffered and of course she knows she’ll never take the place of Aradia or Feferi and she’s not trying to — she’s never going to replace anyone but nor is she going to be a bandage placed on top of two wounds that refuse to stay closed. She knows he’s trying to move on but recovering isn’t linear and despite how Sollux feels like anybody who tries to be with him is doomed Nepeta both doesn’t see things that way and even if it was a threat that she thinks he’s worth it. He’s carrying a lot of weight but she’s str0ng af and wants to help shoulder it with him. Oofie this one was long.

“Broken Sutures” by Ultrakylstron

Sollux POV. I deliberately went down a rabbit hole of looking at nerdcore music to see if I could find a Sollux vibe. And this one is a little contrived, especially if you don’t know about Honey & Clover (which is a cute, soft, passively sad shoujo anime that I can’t recommend because it does that creepy thing where a child character design gets passed off as an adult to make l0lic0n more “acceptable”) but essentially it’s unreliable guy likes a cute girl who likes someone else. And the lyrics go into applauding him for moving in but how that always falls through and it becomes an amalgamation of loving Nepeta but also never letting go on what he’s already lost. Also the idea of her getting him into anime more his vibe is… 💋 chef’s kiss.

followup fun facts about together, to that promised aquarium

this is gonna be just kinda a disorganized post of random things so uh. dont mind that.

the event title is actually a double reference ^^ its both a callback to 1dt with 1c promising to find time to do things as friends despite getting busier (even if theres no ichika this time), and also a reference to harusakis first kizuna!

colopale you still havent given us that aquarium they said theyd go to. theres a reason i had to do it myself. the fact that theres not an aquarium event in general is a crime tbh i know theres some romantic connotations with a pair going to an aquarium but theres very easy solutions to avoiding that? sending a group of 3+ characters together, having them run into other characters while there, inviting someone else along (even if they cant go, it helps make it feel more like a friend thing i think). i did a bit of the latter two, as you mightve noticed! in general though its just SUCH an obviously fun event theme i cant beleive we havent had one yet

while i am a known harusaki shipper, i kept the story pretty light on the stuff that could be read as explicitly shippy, since when im trying to make fake events, i like to think about how itd work in canon, which means keeping it low on explicit ship content. plenty of stuff that could be taken as ship food (as id like it to be!) but nothing that would alienate non shippers from enjoying the story too.

i actually didnt write shizukasas presence as intended for ship content at all though, but im definitely okay with people taking it that way lol they can be on a date too if you want them to be. my plan with them was simply theyre childhood friends too but dont get to spend time together that often anymore -> their schedules line up with a free day and tsukasa heard about the aquarium from saki, decides to invite shizuku to go there with him as a part of hanging out together -> surprise encounter with harusaki!

also both of them were scoring quite high on the form when i decided to lock in the lineup (tsukasa was absolutely sweeping the 2* category, and while shizuku wasnt winning anything, she was a pretty popular choice) and theyre very easy to work into a story together and also into a story that is focused on harusaki (╯▽╰ ) the benefits of siblings and unitmates

the event and gacha names actually both came to me one night while i was about to fall asleep. struck by inspiration so strong i had to grab my phone and write them down in my notes app. and they actually worked very well! also heres the transparents of the logos if you want them i guess

the card/skill/costume names also mostly came to me in similar ways, in the last couple nights before i finished everything. i think only saki, luka, and shizukus skills didnt come to me that way.

while the rui fish in tsukasa card might be obvious, theres actually more animals referencing other characters too! theres a group of three fish in sakis card that are the colors of the rest of leoni, the sneakiest of the bunch, and also not quite as sneaky but maybe not as obvious as the rui fish is the airi and minori sea slugs :)

i did think about giving tsukasa fish to be emu and nene too, but that many differently colored fish in a 2* seemed like too much, so i didnt do it... at least of the units involved, 2/3 of them are fully represented in some way!

and now most importantly probably, is that this is in fact my second pass at an aquarium event! the original one i started back in 2022 and......... i think you guys can figure out why i couldnt just reuse it when i decided to go for making an aquarium event again this time.

yep, youre seeing that right. 4/5 of the characters i chose are the same as what ended up being 1dt, all i got wrong was the vs. thats pretty crazy, honestly. im still not fully convinced colopale isnt just stealing my ideas after val3 happened too /j

it was also saki focus actually! i had written out a rough idea for the story back then too, and while theres some similarities to the current one, it obviously went through a lot of changes when revising the lineup and also with everything that has happened in the story over the past two years. it was definitely a bit more explicitly shippy than my new attempt, although i still tried to keep the shipping stuff toned back somewhat

i only ever made one card for that set though, just lukas 2*... but thats the original reason i made the old 2* backgrounds! its always those fake events throwing me into the graphic design trenches (fist shake) i had been trying to do a more canon-accurate style to......... mixed success. its not terrible, but i definitely could not have done the full set like this. theres a reason i did promised aquarium in my own style!

the original theme for the set was kind of like..... performers at an aquarium? along with living water sculptures of animals. it was a fun idea, but i think i was much better suited to doing the underwater scenes of promised aquarium and also we have plenty of performance themed trained sets already ^^

considering i also technically kept her from the original set (plus she was also winning the vs poll), i gave her a higher rarity card this time around for fun. and also because i knew none of shizuku tsukasa or luka would have super significant roles in the story, and i thought it would be fun to design a lim hairstyle for her!

one final random fun fact: the thing that kicked me into gear making promised aquarium was the fact that haruka wasnt on beautiful sound. i was just a little mad that they had an underwater set WITH A PENGUIN COSTUME and there was no haruka. sometimes petty beef brings out my craziest motivations and then i proceeded to spend the better part of a month planning and making it happen.

I'm from a country that started charging for single use plastic bags years ago, which means everyone switched to reusable plastic or fabric ones instead. I was amazed and baffled when I went grocery shopping in the USA and my extremely social justicey tumblr friends started ripping off handfuls of fresh bags to pack up their shop while I, a centrist who wouldn't even dare tell them my opinion on certain matters, was putting everything into a cloth bag I bought like 7 years ago.

as an outsider who grew up using cloth bags I found it kind of sad and gross how casual everyone was about it, tbh. everyone could just decide to stop using the single use plastic if they wanted to, but they don't because it's convenient and their surroundings enable it. would phasing out plastic bags at grocery stores solve carbon emissions? no! but it was nice in my country when the ban came in and all the discarded bags getting stuck in trees and rivers disappeared overnight. small changes.

and that's how I feel about people addicted to AI. it's sad how normalised it's become in fandom when its output is so bare bones and lowers the user's writing standards (both their ability to write and their standard for what they get back.) I'm not even gonna touch on the environmental part because you obviously aren't going to be convinced there. just wanted to show, through your own example of plastic bags, that people who don't use AI/don't use single use plastic bags are on the outside looking in here and thinking it's pathetic and insane because there are infinite alternatives that are just better for everyone. (and yes you've shown that you can still write a little today, so don't come at me with that excuse. I genuinely hope you keep the writing up since it upsets you so much.)

The thing with plastic bags is- most people REUSE them. That's why the "plastic bag full of plastic bags" meme exists-my husband and I personally use them for cleaning out the litterbox, using in smaller trash cans like our bathroom or our rooms, or collecting small amounts of trash. They're good for wrapping things in if you're moving, too.

We also have fabric bags we use sometimes-the greater Pittsburgh area has a plastic bag ban (tho we rarely shop there any more since we're out of the way from there now), we like to shop at Aldi sometimes which doesn't have them, and sometimes they're just better if we have more groceries-but we still get GREAT use out of or plastic grocery bags. Many many MANY more plastic bags get reused than ones that end up just flying around or in the ocean. I guess I can get the culture shock but I promise it's not just a wasteland of plastic bags out there (ok city I grew up in kinda was sometimes but that is not the case MOST places I've been)

The thing is I still have high standards for my own writing and rping and still put a lot of effort in-I try not to be picky about what I GET BACK bc that feels Rude, but I still have standards for myself. Hell I even try to put a lot into my replies for the bots.

I can write... A bunch of friends shit posting in a group chat and two paragraphs that ended up going nowhere. That isn't exactly self ship??? I'm using the AI for self ship specifically, bc I've been really clogged in terms of imagining things and writing full shippy things.

Individuals using plastic bags or talking with an AI isn't the problem. I don't know what country you're from but I'm sure it still has factories producing smog, waterways being polluted by oil, or SOMETHING worse than a Walmart bag that someone might pick up anyway. Thinky-thoughts incoming! Today’s topic: Musings on relationships and The Mandalorian, from someone who doesn't get it. AKA, What’s the deal with shipping Din and Bo-Katan?

Friendly chats about the following are welcome! But, please ignore if my ramblings are going to upset you.

I didn’t get the Din/Luke thing at first, but I have to admit there’s some potential there. And I can see why the Bo-Katan/Armorer thing has its fans. But I do not get the Din/Bo-Katan thing. At all. And because I feel like writing and my fic ideas are absolutely refusing to happen, I’m gonna pontificate about it.

Ok, so: Din and Luke, they’ve got stuff in common.

They both love a hotrod. Luke’s gonna swoon over the N-1 starfighter. Din’s gonna ask if he can try out the X-wing. They’re gonna bore the crap out of everyone but Peli, talking specs over the beer that Luke’s drinking and Din’s got untouched in front of him (because, helmet).

Yeah, Din’s a reluctant hero while Luke’s been a willing one—but by now, Luke’s seen a few things and I bet he’s starting to feel the weight. Bet you they have their moments of commiseration: Oh come on, not me, not again.

Once they’ve committed, though, they’re both reckless as hell. Luke might jump in faster while Din takes a minute, but once they get going neither one of them has much of a sense of self-preservation.

We’ve seen Din be a stone-cold killer, and people like to think of Luke as the gentle one. But Luke didn’t get his Tumblr reputation of “sunshine and tempered death” for nothing. Do not threaten something he cares about, or someone he loves.

Din’s more deadpan and Luke’s more likely to burst out laughing, but I think we’ve seen they each can appreciate the absurd. They’re going to get each other’s jokes.

Bo-Katan and the Armorer? We know less about each of them, I think, but still:

They’ve taken different paths, but their end goals are the same. The Armorer chose stealth and secrecy, keeping the people away from the world that would hurt them, while Bo-Katan chose guerrilla warfare. But they both gave over their lives to preserving what was left of Mandalore.

They’re both extremely skilled fighters, and they both fight with economy and grace. They’re well matched to train together, even if their skills are different.

They’re both intentional leaders. They’ll be able to share notes on the challenges of authority and how to overcome them.

But Din and Bo-Katan? What are people seeing, that makes them think these two should be together?

Bo-Katan obviously cares a lot about her people, but she’s irreverent and sarcastic about Mandalorian culture, too. Din takes it all extremely seriously, to the point of risking his life (more than once) for a point of protocol. They try to get together, they’re gonna drive each other nuts. Especially if they’re trying to raise a kid together.

Bo-Katan plans and strategizes, as she did with building the fleet. Impulse is not really her thing. When have we ever seen Din have a plan that he didn’t make up on the spur of the moment? Imagine them trying to organize a vacation together. Or dinner, even.

The getting-each-other’s-jokes thing. Do they have the same sense of humor? No idea. Does Bo-Katan even have one?

And then there’s the fact that Din promised to serve her. I know a lot of folks thought that was romantic, but I don’t see it. That was a pledge of deference and duty to a military and cultural leader. When Din speaks, he's generally got one of two settings: He's either utterly serious or offering up dry humor. Sure, he's capable of double meanings, but we've only seen him use that against people. It's not a trick for someone he respects. Plus, we never see Bo-Katan offer anything like a pledge to him in return.

Of course, there’s also the fact that my non-shippy heart wants to see more of Din and Grogu’s adventures together, and Din’s development as a parent and as a Mandalorian—and I don’t see any real need to hand him a canon romance. I mean, sure, he’s a bit of a blorbo for me and I want him to be happy. But from a storytelling perspective I just don’t think it’s missing.
