exactlyyyy omg. thank you for dropping in my askbox anon, i needed to get a few things off my chest. keep in mind that i'm a show watcher only that managed to get the comics spoiled within an inch of her life bc um. that's my special skill. also, i'm not here to hate on markeve, i know it's a very popular ship and they have cute moments. sleep-deprieved rambling below the cut, don't like don't read.

but. markeve ties in with one of the many issues i have had with season three as a whole. the format (eight episodes... please give us twenty two episodes back, i beg) makes it so that they have to rush to adapt comic storylines, and they've been doing a good job, yes, but god damn does it feel rushed. the action scenes may be impactful, but the character beats and emotional moments fail to reach me personally.

and in comes the major problem i have with markeve: it, too feels rushed. like. yeah okay there were a few moments in earlier seasons were you could tell that they mayyybe were into each other, but that's it. and all of the sudden, in eight episodes, i'm supposed to believe that they're each other's soulmates after little to no time for the watchers to get used to their dynamic as a couple. (because we have had time to watch them interact as friends and they were very sweet together. highkey would have wanted them to remain friends)

by comparison, mark x amber had much more time to grow. we saw them get together, date, fall in love, try to salvage their relationship against all odds (because cecil sure as hell isn't going to give mark a breather), hang out with friends, before ultimately breaking up. and all that happened over the course of 16 episodes, wich is short, but we as viewers have had time to get attached. add in the fact that there was one year between each season iirc and boom. time to get used to their dynamic.

and from a character perspective? amber knew what she wanted. she had her goals in mind and wasn't afraid to call mark out on his bullshit. she stood up for herself, and had so much chemistry with mark it hurt. like damn, i tend to binge watch shows and only remember a few lines, but the "handsome mark grayson" line stayed with me for a reason. amber feels like her own character even when she's dating mark whereas eve as a character is much more interesting than eve as mark's girlfriend. to me, her character traits (ie wanting to figure out how to help ppl outside of superheroism/teen team/the gda) get sidelined and she ends up acting as a therapist for mark.

so yeah, mark x amber is the superior ship to me. it feels organic in a way markeve fails to be, mark and amber both stay true to their character and boy. the conflict around their relationship? "our worlds are too different for us to bloom in our relationship and i love you enough to let you go even if it kills me to not share your life?" peak drama.

There is this. version. of Buffy Summers that I see in fics. Mainly tbf ones not about her, usually mlm stuff bc that's what I'd be reading but I feel like pops up a lot in general where she's like. This judgmental bitch who looks down on everyone and could do with being brought down a peg or two. With a big vibe being that the Scoobies are all a bit sick of her attitude but no one's willing to call her out until the writer has somebody turn to her like Buffy shame on you, how could you fail to consider that Spike is sorry now and he's so hurt by your rejection of his five minute redemption, Buffy why do you always have to be so stubborn, Buffy why do you always see things in black and white. And just. Who IS this girl. Its like people base Buffy’s entire personality on the I Am The Law speech out of context, that she is undeniably fighting for good but just wants to kill everyone who steps out of line and has no capacity for forgiveness, her friends can't and shouldn't go to her with their problems bc she'll immediately judge them, and she always needs a rational word from Giles or Willow or somebody to reel her in and see someone else's perspective. It makes me unwell. Negatively.

Not saying people can't swear off a character who did something they can't stomach but more the idea that stuff like Angel eating Holtz's family or Anya's history of horrific punishments against guys she admits did Not all deserve it or yeah, even that a not-insignificant percentage of the cast have committed sexual assault should mean the characters should be written off. Obviously this comes up most in Spike vs Angel wars as a way to say which one is the worst when their body counts really truly do not matter on the character front. If Angel has killed like a thousand more people than Spike does that really mean fucking anything if Spike has still killed thousands of people. This is a 'verse where The Forces of Evil are very much like. A thing. Demons who kill people for no reason that we need to fight once a week exist. But hey what if one of them like Angel or Anya or Spike suddenly had to stop killing and get a job and try to maintain a friend group. That's what this shit is all ABOUT. Its FUN. my Witch Door fanfiction (long form, wip, looking for alpha/beta readers)

Time to shout from the rooftops again! I finally found a fitting name for the whole series, so now I know how to tag my wip stuff. If you like The Witch Door, and especially if you maybe feel like doing some alpha/beta reading (mostly I need a sounding board), please read on!

Let me bring you (and myself) up to speed: this opus magnum originally started out as a quick oneshot, a little scene that happened following the side comic "Afterparty". Just a tiny little continuation, another meeting in a dream. 2.5k, one-and-done. (This bit is up on AO3, see below.)

And then it grew some fluff. And then it grew some background story. And then all of a sudden there was plot. All the characters from the comic got roped in (except the bird people cause I avoided the main canon plotline). And finally it sprouted original characters as a supporting cast. And uh, I'm still not entirely done…

So, what have we got so far?

This has turned into a five part series which I have decided to name Vem Kan Segla. I'd say about 70% of it are written, and fun to read in my own humble opinion.

(Please note: whenever I say "relationship" that totally includes friend- and other ships!)

Part 1: Exactly as you are 10 chapters, all of them written and theoretically postable (chapter 1 being said "oneshot"). Mostly fluff and developing relationship stuff with a little bit of spicyness, tiny smidgen of – hurt? angst? I'm actually not sure. But mostly Jousia and Jesse figuring out what they are to each other, with only one chapter from another person's point of view (Tzofiya my beloved!).

Part 2: The choices we make Picks up just after the end of part 1. Starts out angsty and gets progressively worse. The first ten chapters all end with cliffhangers, and after a brief respite there's a chapter or three of hurt no comfort before we get a happy ending. (It does leave a lot of plot lines unresolved though.) Nilsa and Katariina play a major part in this as well. This is mostly written except for some bits that need filling out, maybe 2k of missing words all in all.

Part 3: Family found Picks up right after the end of part 2. More plot! Some drama! More relationship developments! Honest talking about difficult things! The spicyness gets weird! There are even more characters! And the ending is done, and it's the happiest ending I could possibly have written. There's one character literally rolling on the floor bed laughing.

This part is where things start to get so complex that I really would love to be able to bounce ideas around with somebody, help me get all these flighty ducks in a row.

Part 4: (no title yet) This will be full of beautiful domestic happiness, more relationships developing, slice of life stuff. Even a little bit of romance, if you will. And then three people die and it gets very sad. The remaining loose threads get wrapped up, and there's a peaceful ending.

This is the wobbliest bit… it might even turn into two parts, I really can't say yet. I'd love a sounding board person or three.

Part 5: Epilogue This will be only one chapter, but a long one. Haven't written a single word down but it's perfectly finished in my head. Picks up six months after the end of part 4, has a happy fairly ending (considering that nobody gets resurrected).

Pretty much exclusively Halo. I wrote a story for the Illuminae Files a little while ago because I read that trilogy this spring and it changed the chemical balance of my brain and hasn't let me go since. I also write some for the Artemis Fowl fandom because by golly somebody is going to keep the Holly Short/Trouble Kelp tag alive!

Promise - The only in-universe John/Cortana ship that I've ever written.

Serenity - A Halo/Firefly crossover in which Blue Team are made into space cowboys and I love it.

Halo: Homecoming (formerly titled Welcome Home) - My most bestest creation. The first actual story I ever wrote to completion.

Twenty-ish Days - A series of Halo one-shots as a summer follow up to my other story, Twelve Days (which was a series of one-shots counting down the twelve days of Christmas)

Take Care of Each Other - Another entry on the list of "Why This Dude Should Not Be Allowed To Name Things." Anyhow, it's - you guessed it - a series of one-shots. This time they are all focused on the Fred-104/Kelly-087 ship because I have shipped those two since I first found the Halo novels in middle school and I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I let that tag slip quietly into that good night.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Comments are an uncomfortably large portion of my self-esteem, particularly as a writer of dimestore trash fics. I definitely respond to comments, because I'm desperate to keep people commenting.

What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I angle heavily toward the bright-and-happy side of things. Personally think that there's too much angst in the world without me adding to it.

Having said that, the last chapter of Twenty-ish Days dealt with some angst and some character death that I won't spoil here on the off-chance that someone may read this and feel inspired to go find out for themselves. Other than that... maybe Mister Zhordee? It's a Halo-fied retelling of the song Mr Shorty by Marty Robbins, which has a decent touch of angst to it I suppose.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Again, I lean toward the happy endings naturally so this is kind of a tough one. In general though, I'd say my dumb college AU series The University of Northern South Carolina because every one of those has been happy.

Do you get hate on fics?

Not really. On some of the stuff I still bother to cross-post to FFN I have gotten some weird comments from people who didn't understand the universe I was building in my Halo/Firefly crossover, but other than that anyone who's bothered to leave a comment has been very pleasant.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Nope. I like to keep that level of intimacy just between my wife and me.

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Serenity, the Halo/Firefly crossover I've been slowly chipping away at for some time now. I'm also (spoilers?) kicking around an idea of a DnD crossover just for the fun of it all.

Fred/Kelly probably. Or Han/Leia. Or Fred/Daphne. Man, I don't know. I just love love I guess.

What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

One time, for no reason at all, I looked up Harry Potter fanfiction. I have avoided it forever because I actually like the established relationships in the universe and detest anything that implies a romantic connection between Hermione and Draco, so it's a pretty clear no-fly zone for me. However, during this one occurrence I somehow stumbled upon a ship of Katie Bell and Oliver Wood, read all of the stories with that tag, and then wrote ~70% of a one-shot of my own for the pair. Will most likely never finish it, because I really don't have much reason to do so.

What are your writing strengths?

I've been told (by kpmh2001, one of my all-time favorite authors and people) that I have somehow harnessed a talent in writing cute fluffy stories. Personally I like to think that I'm good at writing action sequences, but I have no outside information to corroborate that.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Keeping a coherent plot, and keeping my focus for more than a single chapter at a time. I'm absolute garbage at it.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I speak fluent Portuguese (lived in Brazil for two years in my late teens/early 20s) so I'm confident with that. I can also understand Spanish, but every time I try to speak or write it still comes out in Portuguese so I end up relying pretty heavily on Google to fix my errors there.

First fandom you wrote for?

I think I have at least a dozen notebooks with Clone Wars fanfiction strewn throughout my parents' house. I'm a Star Wars man at heart, even though I don't ever write anything in that universe.

Favorite fic you've ever written?

Already said it, but Halo: Homecoming takes this spot again. It probably doesn't hold up as well as I like to think it does, but being my first ever success at writing an actual story with plot and motivation and a concrete ending has cemented it in my personal hall of fame.

Hey there people of today and robots of tomorrow! It's me, Clark, back at least with another #throwbackthursday, just in time for the highly-anticipated Across the Spider-Verse! With Miles set to swing across the big screen again, I figured how would be a good time to show off this piece I made in 2020 featuring my characters from 3K. 3K is set in the year 3000 (hence the super subtle name) where robots are as common as people. So much so that a group of them band together in order to defend the planet from internal and external threats. One of its founding members is AH, a robot who went blind after seeing years of war now fighting for peace. Yet in another dimension she is one of a handful of robots who is infused with the powers of a spider, AH herself dawning the mantle of SpidAH-Girl. She fights crime in New York City alongside her friend ERN-E (Classic Spidey) and EMIL-E (Spider-Gwen).

In case this pic doesn't make it super obvious, I am a huge fan of Mayday Parker's Spider-Girl, her series acting as a gateway for my eventual love of comic books. Having fallen in love with the Raimi trilogy around the same time I discovered Google, I stumbled across the cover for The Amazing Spider Girl #1 and my life was never the same after. May zigged in everyway her father zagged. While she wasn't as physically strong as Peter was, I'd argue she was mentally and morally stronger than her old man ever was. Where Pete thinks that someone dies every time he fails, May sees it as somebody lives every time she succeeds. Along with that she has faster reflexes, a keener spider sense, can magnetize surfaces with her adhesion abilities, and even inherited her mother Mary Jane's sense of style. This is most evident by the fact that she looks way better in Ben Reily's spider suit than Ben himself ever did. On top of that she's a big brother, which is also cool.

However, this pic didn't keep me up until 1 or 2 AM. What can I say, when I get an idea in my head, nothing stops me until I see it completed. Especially when the end result turned out so great. I liked how AH looks in both her super suit and casual clothes, not to mention her lil' logo was a nice personal touch. If I were to change anything now it'd be to swap out EMIL-E's Spider-Gwen outfit for MJ's Spinneret from Renew Your Vows. EMIL-E and ERN-E are supposed to be a couple and by now I've jumped aboard the Miles x Gwen ship. It's the one time I will ever ship a Spider-Man with Gwen outside of Spectacular Spider-Man. Otherwise the reason I drew EMIL-E like this was because of a Halloween pinup my friends SIM-N and I did for Halloween back in 2016.

Looking back now, I wish we had named these pin ups something other than Playbot. Chock it up to be being a dumb teenager. Speaking of dumb, hey tumblr, screw you and your limit on image size! This is an art sharing website, I should be able to upload files regardless of size! Especially when I wanna share these old Halloween pin-ups later this year!

1. Are you team Rational or Supernatural?

I'm straight down the middle. I love the idea of isolation and horrible situations tipping everyone to their most feral state, but I love the idea of wilderness magic also. Both make me happy.

2. Who is your favorite teen timeline character? Favorite adult timeline character?

Jackie from the teen timeline and Shauna as an adult. I think her evolution and deterioration is so interesting, especially with so many scenes featuring her in the kitchen of her home surrounded by little rabbits... the poetry of it all is magnificent.

3. What is your favorite needledrop?

It doesn't count but Florence and the Machine (loml) covering Just a Girl for the trailer put this show on my radar and that song pretty much lives on every playlist I have. There's a bunch of really great music from the show, but nothing makes an impression on me the way that FATM does.

4. What is your favorite ship?

JackieNat. But I also like fics where Shauna figures out her life and gets Jackie properly without the emotional damage. It feels like a reward after watching trauma.

5. What is your favorite episode?

I have no clue.

6. Who do you want the Antler Queen to be?

Nat!!! I think the idea of someone who doesn't conform to the standard vibe becoming the leader is so interesting, especially with the wilderness edge to it. I want to see messy, angry Nat crash out at least twice.

7. What is your favorite scene in the entire series?

The conversations between Nat and Ben are huge to me + the beginning line up scene where Jackie reads her team with love.

8. A theory or prediction you have about Season 3?

I'm gonna be hurt?? I think the girls are going to split into groups and attack each other. I'd love if the show used the girls as girls more. So far they've been a large group hanging around in the background to Tai and Van, Lottie's tiny section of believers, Nat and Travis... I'd love some background characters getting a chance to show more on screen, have background dynamics, and let the main cast have a reason to talk more.

Let Nat have female relationships in season three 👏 that's not even a theory or prediction, but a demand.

9. Which character do you relate to the most, and why?

Messy, obviously, but a split between Nat/Jackie/Shauna.

I grew up like Nat in a lot of ways. Small towns are a punishment.

Jackie has a habit of wanting so much and being perceived as lacking so much by the people closest to her. That stuff hit hard.

I've been the girl writing in her diary while sitting in her car. I've been the girl with the weird sapphic situationship that still haunts me even though it has been years. I've been the girl wanting to consume pieces of somebody just to replicate them to the best of my ability in the past. I've been the girl wearing a bunch of flannel.

10. What is the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of Yellowjackets?

I watched episode one and wasn't a huge fan of it, but ten edits of Jackie/Shauna showed up on my TikTok which intrigued me. I then saw one edit of Jackie/Nat that was somehow enough to write the first two chapters of LACY AND THE GRUDGE. I was watching the show for the first time when I was writing that fic, and I was only in the middle of the flashback scenes when I finished season two. That fic was so much fun to write but also I'm really confused how I aggressively started that whole thing with 1% worth of data in my head. I obviously love the show after sitting down properly with it, and I've written roughly a billion fics for it, but I don't know. Feels a little silly.

I actually like Travis. It was 1996. My bar for guys is low now, that was a whole different century back then. He's just one of those dudes with a shitty upbringing/dad, which isn't great, but every single character was designed to evolve to some extent out in the wilderness. Travis wasn't incapable of caring. He also so obviously wanted a conversation with somebody who wasn't a Yellowjacket or Ben and made the funniest faces whenever someone talked to him. Here’s mine!

1. I am mostly Team Rational because I love the way this show depicts trauma but I also love seeing the supernatural side of things through the survivors’ eyes if that makes sense.

2. Natalie in the teen timeline because I love her compassion and softness underneath the front she puts on. Lottie in the adult timeline because I love her internal battle with herself and how afraid she is of her own mind. Misty is a close second in the adult timeline!

3. “Cornflake Girl” playing while Nat sees the mossy tree for the first time, Callie seeing the Adam Martin driver’s license in the barbecue, and Shauna eating Jackie’s ear. It just goes so perfectly with everything that’s going on (especially the elevated piano while Nat and Travis are scaling the mountain and the lyrics while Shauna takes the bite!)

4. LottieNat is my favorite ship I can’t help it Nat and Lottie are my favorite characters so having them together is a dream (TaiVan, JackieShauna, and TravNat are up there, too).

5. 1x09 “Doomcoming” is just amazing and captures everything I love about Yellowjackets. I love when they let the girls go batshit crazy, hoping we get more Doomcoming vibes in S3.

6. I want the Antler Queen to be Natalie because that would show a true descent for her in the Wilderness from being the most morally grounded one to the leader of the group at their most unhinged and primal. But honestly I think that Shauna might be the AQ after all…

7. I think the Jackie-eating scene is the best in the entire show. The “Climbing Up the Walls” song choice, the bacchanal feast flashes as a way of coping with the horror of what they’re doing, seeing them go fully feral for the first time, it’s such a well crafted scene.

8. I know this probably won’t happen but I’m just going to throw it out there that Cabin Daughter is alive and she will be revealed to have been Javi’s “friend”!

9. I relate to Shauna the most because I also admittedly have a bit of an obsessive/intense personality and I, too, internalize my emotions to a very unhealthy degree sometimes. I also grew up being in love with my childhood best friend who is very, very much like Jackie (and now we have been dating for 7 years!)

10. Mine is a mix of going to a Yellowjackets panel and sitting like 5 feet from the showrunners, doing everything in my power to score early screening tickets to Heretic and Companion, and pretending I was sick so I could go home early from work the day that the S3 trailer came out.

11. The male characters on this show get too much hate🫢 I like Travis, Jeff, Kevyn, and Walter (even though his introduction and storyline are rushed and forced). I don’t like them more than the female characters, but I like them nevertheless and appreciate their contributions to the plot.

To give some context about this, I was referring to a fun coincidence on some Shindan Maker results I got, in which I got 'Jean Horst' and 'Quincy Baker'; something reminiscent when married couples change their surnames. So I wanted to write something related to that.

...Like the original thread says, I felt a bit torn talking about marriage with this ship; as I hadn't talked enough about their story or dynamic to get to that point. This is also why I also felt torn on sharing/reposting this on Tumblr too. But you know what? I'll do it anyway. They mean the world to me, and if this is the only way I can talk about them, then so be it ;^; And then again after this thread I still haven't written much about them, so...

I'd still like to talk about these results + JeanQuin overall, so here's a confession. ...If we interpret these two surname swaps as their "post-marriage name changes", then... I actually have no idea which these two would settle for. Both options have STRONG arguments.

I'll just say that due to many reasons, both would have no problem giving up their original surnames.

For example, Baker might be more "popular" and all, but Jean admires the Horst surname; due to all the love and care Quincy, his family, and their ancestors have put onto it. Which does hit hard, considering he comes from an entirely different (And broken) familiar situation.

Having experienced so many bitter memories while carrying the surname Baker, Jean wouldn't mind giving it up and instead join a family with such a rich history and loving people. Ironically at the other side of the spectrum, Quincy shares these reasons to change into a Baker.

The Bakers are not the only family he has heard of having a rather sad past (Hell, even the Horst are imperfect), but at least those other families found a way to move on, and write a new chapter for their futures (The Marlin, for example).

So, maybe its time for them to do it too. And Quin would love to join in.

Of course, he does not expect nor want to fix their issues by himself; that's for Jean to handle first of all, if he decides to. But in case he ever needs a hand, a different point of view, or just even somebody to lend in a hug or comfort during the worst days... Quin wants to be there for him.

Though this choice did stun Jean at first, being used to Quincy always talking about his legacy and how much he wanted to carry it on. So he made sure many times to know if this was what he truly wanted. But no matter how many times he asked, his answer was always yes.

I forgot to add, but I also like the third option towards this little dilemma; which is to add both surnames post-marriage. Not a bad idea, and it does still fit the ideals of both characters without having to dump their original surname away. But I'm still indesicive yet...

Though, it does sound cursed, specially for their future kids (?

Tbh I don't remember my very first OC because that was when I was in my teenage years, but the first newer one that I actually drew is Honey! I drew her when I was getting back into art after I said fuck it because my high school art teacher was a pompous dickhead creep that yelled at me in front of everyone for starting to paint on accident instead of doing another step. I was supposed to have her be my Among Us OC with her last name being Pot and how she's frenemies with Pink Crewmate (and she knows who she is 💀). I should redraw her sometime!

My Mortal Kombat OC Dji'Vanah! Long story short, she's an Outworld assassin that out-classes Kitana, Jade, and Skarlet combined. She goes on a quest for vengance after the Brotherhood of Sin pilaged her home and killed her loved ones. She meets Hanzo and teams up with him on multiple missions before they fall in love! Dji'Vanah's important to me because even though Mortal Kombat and its characters and settings are already established, I really expanded my mind in worldbuilding. What are other regions of Outworld? Do they exist? Who are the citizens? What powers do they have? Did they get taken over by Shao Kahn? What of other factions? What about their cultures? There's so many questions that won't get answered unless you make them. And she's so well-designed that every single artist made her BEAUTIFUL and her hair is versitile! Not gonna lie, I'd wanna meet my Resident Evil OC Christie Belle Silverheart. Girl's a bad bitch but she's really just a softie that just wants to be protected. My Resident Evil OC Christie Belle Silverheart. At first, she was an un-named OC that was just a mere museum tour guide getting a bite to eat after work. She ends up meeting Carlos Oliveira after he saved her life. She's scared shitless but sticks with him and survives using his advice of survival tactics before they end up separating. The OC was on a train to leave before Carlos and Jill meet until shit popped off due to Nemesis fucking around. The OC then comes across a little girl (like how Sherry and Claire meet) and protects her from her parents that got infected from saving their child. The OC takes the girl with her and they survive by hot wiring a nice car and dipping about twenty minutes before the nuke is launched. The OC pretty much adopts the girl and they go back to living at her parents for the time being after having to travel almost across the country to get there. Then like two years later, after Carlos pinky-promised he wouldn't leave the OC in a cold, cruel, Carlos-less world, he coincidentally meets the OC and the kid after trying to lay low from what happened in Raccoon City. Then they really can delve in their feelings for each other. And all that got scrapped for what I got with Christie 💀

Let's Talk About NatsuMikan: Natsume (pt. 5)

I'm back on my bullshit. I decided I'd post these, once a day, four days a week. Then I'll go on breaks for the weekend to let interested readers catch up while also further writing more entries. At the time I'm posting this, for example, I'm in the process of analyzing Chapter 39. That way, it's easier for everyone to enjoy this essay. Which I hope people do.

Anyway, this can finally truly be called a ship essay, because one of our key players has FINALLY developed feelings! Going forward, Natsume's behavior will heavily feature his growing affections for Mikan. We'll be analyzing Natsume's self-preserving hesitation as well as his immediate instinct to give up any chance he has from the get-go.

Chapter Seventeen

Natsume next shows up to walk into Class B during a commotion of Mikan’s retelling of the Reo incident. The kids all gather around him now too to ask questions and press about his condition. One kid even asks if he should teach Mikan a lesson for bragging about his rescue. Mikan smiles at him, under the assumption that their shared trauma has brought them closer and maybe even made them friends, but Natsume’s response is to simply turn away and ignore her.

He’s still Natsume after all. This is the first girl he’s ever liked, and she used to be somebody he despised, so the change in feelings is probably very strange to him. He’s confused and possibly embarrassed. He doesn’t know what to say or how to act.

Can't have her getting any ideas that he's completely changed his mind about her or anything.

Most of the people that Natsume likes at the school (although that is just Ruka and Youichi… so… you know) know that he likes them. He spends time with them, is gentle with them, does things for them, and can openly say kind things to and about them. Mikan is different. He used to be her number one enemy, so all of a sudden switching gears and becoming her friend would be quite odd.

Over time, Natsume will find ways to be gentle and sweet to Mikan, but for now his crush is brand new and he doesn’t know how to act quite yet. He’d rather avoid her entirely, or pretend like nothing happened, than openly approach his new feelings.

Furthermore his behavior is always and under all circumstances inseparable from his status as Persona’s favorite and as the Black Cat. He may have some loved ones, but he keeps the number low and tries to avoid getting close to people for a reason. Naturally, nobody could ever really understand his experiences so there will always be a divide between him and the rest of his peers, but even more than that is that considering people precious turns them into targets.

Natsume has probably learned the hard way that displaying closeness and affection for his friends can have dangerous effects, so he might now think of showing that kind of affection as selfish or even cruel. Why subject somebody to something like that, merely because he has feelings for them? It’s not fair.

In either case, it’s really not that Natsume is naturally mean and cold. He just doesn’t trust his situation enough to properly act. It’s safer in every way to just pretend like nothing changed. It’s too much to deal with otherwise. But sooner rather than later, the hard thing will be staying away. Eventually, maintaining coldness with her will be almost impossible.

Chapter Eighteen

This chapter further touches on Natsume’s new-found crush and its consequences.

Class B is used to being in an environment where Natsume hates Mikan and is bothered by everything she does. He gives in to her slightly, in small ways, and it shocks his classmates. Now, it’s understandable that, even if he hadn’t developed a crush on her, he might still be softer to a girl who risked her life to save him, but it’s still odd.

Mikan recalls asking Natsume for help training her alice. She needs an offensive alice to nullify, so Iinchou or Hotaru’s would be ineffectual in training. Natsume is really the best person to ask, and, to everyone’s surprise, he actually agrees to help.

Natsume doesn't need any convincing to help her, but what did she think practicing with a fire alice would entail?

And yes it does seem like he’s only doing it to torture her, because his alice is capable of genuine bodily harm and his admirers snicker with amusement at his antics, but I can’t help but assume there’s more to it.

He doesn’t really hesitate to help. He doesn’t need convincing at all. In some ways I think he did genuinely want to help. Her alice helped save his life, after all. Why not repay the favor by using his alice to help her train? To him, there's a lot of value in her alice, so training it is beneficial in his perspective as well.

And later still, Mikan spots Natsume sitting amongst the principal students. He stands out, as an elementary student next to upperclassmen. This moment is a good introduction to the arc. His crush on Mikan only grows stronger as the festival goes on, but there’s something looming over him too--he’s different from the rest of them. He stands out so much during the festival. He’s a dangerous ability type who’s not allowed to participate while also being a principal who has to sit on the stage for the opening ceremony. That's horribly ironic, but also shows just how singled out and under the spotlight he is. It’s a huge part of why he acts the way he does, so cold and mean and distant despite his growing affections. It’s all he can do.

He may see potential for a future, but he’d be foolish to think he should be able to acquire it, because his current circumstances have not changed at all.

The chapter ends with Natsume being asked by Koko if he wants to try out the special ability class event. He’s looking towards the special ability area, and we can tell the next chapter will be fun.

Chapter Nineteen

And how!

Natsume is here to see Ruka, his best friend, but he’s also here to catch a glimpse of the girl he has a crush on.

Sumire is also there, and it’s interesting to see that Natsume hasn’t changed in his attitude around her either, even though she also helped save him. She tries to embrace him and he dodges her.

This catches some people’s attention and they start to whisper about his presence.

In the anime, this moment is a bit more potent, hearing the murmurs and seeing a darkness over the gossiping kids, but the manga still establishes that the people waiting in line are by-and-large unhappy to see him. They whisper amongst themselves, rudely asking why he’d bother to come here, but that gloom only lasts for a moment (one singular panel and then Natsume’s responding bitterness) before Mikan appears jumping over the wall, calling his name and even smiling.

It’s almost like she was waiting for him to show up, running off from her post the second she heard Natsume was there. The dark looming screentones are replaced with flowery ones, and it’s hard not to think of this as his perspective: all is gloomy and then there is Mikan. All of a sudden, after hating her for so long, he thinks of her as bright sunshine, and he must have showed up just to see her and feel nice for a change.

Of course, he ruins the mood. It feels almost as if he does it solely because he knows it will upset her. She was so excited to see him, and he manages to completely turn her mood from eager to angry, just the opposite of how she was able to unwittingly turn his mood from gloomy to... as close to content as he can get.

He’s okay now. He doesn’t want her getting any ideas.

Now, in my opinion, his method of bothering her could be anything and the plot would remain the same. What matters is that he wants to piss her off, and this just so happens to be the way he does it, partially because it’s intended to be funny. Mikan has to get angry at him for this chapter to progress the way it does, but his actions could have been replaced by any other irritating action and it could’ve gone the same way.

Tsubasa then appears, drawn to the sound of a loud commotion. He sees Natsume and vaguely wonders why he’s there. Everyone knows Natsume, at all grade levels, because he’s famous. For Tsubasa, whose only real knowledge of Mikan’s relationship with the kid is that he causes trouble in Class B, it would be strange to see him at the RPG.

Natsume, meanwhile, has no idea who Tsubasa is. Seeing Mikan crawl all over her senpai, seeing him easily comfort her, is something that bugs Natsume. He glares at Tsubasa, somebody whose name he doesn’t even know, and then starts leaving with Ruka.

At first, Tsubasa is confused to be treated like this, until he hugs Mikan tighter and sees both Natsume and Ruka turn in jealousy. Tsubasa gets it immediately. Thus begins a strange and tumultuous frenemy relationship between Tsubasa and Natsume, where they both begrudgingly understand each other while also irritating each other beyond belief.

Natsume is not interested in playing the game, insulting it and wondering how anyone could get hooked on it. Ultimately, it’s not even Mikan who convinces him to give it a shot; it’s Tsubasa taunting him, “then you should be able to win, no problem, right?”

Tsubasa will come to regret saying this, because the answer is yes.

The RPG is designed to be tough. Nobody has won the whole game yet. Beating one or two students is one thing, but being able to outsmart or outmaneuver the entire special ability class is a difficult feat.

Natsume agrees to play, and gets a robot cockroach as a weapon.

Tsubasa is hugging Mikan as Natsume is about to enter, and that pisses him off even more. He decides that Tsubasa will be his slave, his motive being get your hands off her. This is silly considering that just a short time ago, Natsume hated Mikan. His feelings really did a 180.

The challenges pick up in difficulty as he goes on. The first one is effortless. He doesn’t even move from where he’s standing. The mirror-alice girl just freaks out about the cockroach and sends him on his way after two seconds.

The next one is trickier, and Natsume will need to put in more effort than just standing and waiting for the cockroach to do its job. But not that much effort. He sits next to Megane, lights a fire, and waits. It’s a scorching flame, and although Megane tries to tough it out, he gives in with two seconds to spare. Natsume, a smartass, quips sarcastically that he’s sorry--he really can’t tell how hot it is. (This is not actually important or anything, it’s just interesting that Natsume is not affected by his own flames and can’t feel the heat of them. I might end up referring to this a couple times.)

With the exception of the first and last challenges, Natsume uses his alice to beat the maze; either by heating Megane up so his soul goes back into his body, or by writing with fire instead of chalk. The next challenge is the one Natsume has been waiting for and he’ll use his alice here too.

Tsubasa is shocked to find Natsume has progressed so quickly, but he proceeds with the challenge: Natsume has to touch him in thirty seconds, but it’ll be tricky ‘cause he’s held in place by his shadows. He toys with Natsume’s shadows a bit, which really pisses Natsume off. Tsubasa even apologizes nervously, even though he’s the one in control. Or he is, until Natsume uses his alice again and gets rid of the shadows.

Natsume’s anger towards Tsubasa all stems from jealousy. It’s not just that Tsubasa was hugging and comforting Mikan, it’s that he can. Natsume needs to distance himself from Mikan in order to keep her safe, and he’s aware of that right from the start, but there’s more to it. He’s busy establishing himself as an enemy to Mikan, doing things to bother her to make her angry with him, but nobody rushes to their bully for comfort, and Natsume knows this. It’s not just that Tsubasa was hugging Mikan; it’s that he feels like he will never get the chance.

And so the next and final challenge is where he gets to be selfish.

Mikan is aggravated to see him, obviously not thrilled that he was able to make it in such a short time. Her task is that he has to get her off the carpet in thirty seconds. He can’t hurt her or force her off the carpet, and because of their alice training together, he can’t use his alice on her either. (They’d apparently practiced so much that she was able to sharpen her skills significantly. Before, her alice was a wildcard and she struggled with using it, but now she’s able to use it with relative ease. That’s a lot of training in a short time, and I’m sure Natsume wasn’t upset at all the time they had to spend together as a result.)

Natsume must feel relief regarding Mikan's nullification alice. She's nullified his alice in pretty big ways already, one time to save his life. The girl he's crushing on is capable of turning off the thing that decreases his lifespan. She really is a breath of fresh air, in more ways than one, and his appreciation for her alice, even if he doesn't voice it, will only grow. This is important, but I'll talk way more about this in the other POV.

He tries the cockroach, but she’s a country girl and unaffected.

Natsume is genuinely stumped by her challenge, admitting to himself that it’s a tough one. He then comes up with a risky idea, no doubt influenced by her rescue of him when they were kidnapped by Reo. He plays sick. This act only works if Mikan falls for it and is concerned enough to jump off the carpet, but he’s a good actor on account of all the sick experience he has and she does fall for it in no time. Her being concerned was a given.

She jumps off, meaning he’s won the game, but that’s not enough of a victory for him. He acts sick until she’s closer, so he can grab her and put his arm around her. Yes, he calls her an idiot, but this is the closest he can get to a hug… for now. It doesn’t matter that she’s annoyed and dismayed that he won. All he cares about is that he got to touch her.

She jumped down. He won already, but it's not enough! (Also sorry about two pictures. If it ruins the format, oh well.)

Natsume was jealous that Tsubasa got to do something he thinks he'll never be able to, and so he got a taste of what he wanted some other, convoluted way. He gets angry that Tsubasa is so touchy, but that's only because he wishes he could be touchy too. Natsume will get bolder and bolder with his physical affection, because he will want more and more to show it. When he starts being honest about this affection, she will be more eager to return it.

Natsume is the first winner, and Tsubasa admits it was never expected for somebody to be able to pass all the challenges. Part of the appeal is that it’s an unbeatable game, but Natsume’s feelings of jealousy and spite were enough to get him over the finish line. Though perhaps knowing it's beatable but only one person could is also appealing. It's possible to pass, but very rare for somebody to be able to, so they can draw in crowds by capitalizing on kids who want to the next person to beat the game.

He gets to choose a lamp, but he has no idea which one is whose. He cheats by asking Koko to tell him which one is the right one, but he ends up picking Mikan’s, because Koko assumed that’s the one he wanted. After all--Natsume was thinking about her. Natsume is lucky that Mikan was too anguished at being a slave to care about Natsume thinking about her, but it’s interesting to know that even when he’s supposed to be angry at Tsubasa, he was only thinking of Mikan.

Chapter Twenty

This chapter’s premise is pretty simple and light: Natsume can’t think of any use for Mikan other than to follow him and Ruka around the festival and carry their stuff. They navigate the technical ability class area and even encounter Hotaru, though only for a short time because she’s quite busy.

Most importantly, their time in the technical area makes Mikan insecure. Everyone in the tech class seems to know what they want to do with their lives, with their alices being perfect for research or creation. I’ll go into more detail with this during Mikan’s essay, but it’s important to note that Mikan asks the people around her if they’re prepared for their future only to see that they all are. Hotaru, Sumire, and even Ruka all have dreams for the future, even if Ruka won’t share his. Natsume has decided to leave the conversation and we don’t hear what his dream is, which makes sense because he doesn’t have one. Natsume doesn’t think he’ll live long enough to graduate, so why even bother wasting his own time and getting his hopes up for something unattainable?

It’s then revealed that Ruka is also a triple, and Mikan can’t tell, but the mood has been soured for Ruka. His triple-star status is a touchy subject that he’s unhappy with. His star rank is representative of Natsume’s suffering and he doesn’t like talking about it. He only says that he didn’t mention it because he didn’t get it on his own talent or effort before Natsume forces Mikan to walk in another direction, claiming to be hungry.

This is literally just a scan of the TokyoPop version, which is better than the other version I see floating around.

He can tell Ruka is uncomfortable and is ready to step in so that his friend can feel better.

As a result, they end up at the cafe where Anna is working (after all, Mikan has been perfecting her puppy-dog eyes routine and I think both Ruka and Natsume are affected, even if the latter would never admit it).

Natsume takes the first bite of Anna’s hell pie, just to see a rot demon (or whatever that thing is) taunt him about the trouble his stomach will be in soon. He really doesn’t have a choice but to throw the tea over the pie. Ruka is grateful, but Mikan is outraged at how rude Natsume is acting, and even angrier when Natsume explains that the pie was horrible. She demands he apologize but Natsume simply walks away, content to be the bad guy because he saved his friends from getting food poisoning while also sparing Anna’s feelings and reputation at her cafe.

"Your stomach will writhe" is such a potent threat. I feel sick just looking at that demon/scoundrel/rot thing.

This scene has more substance than in the anime. In the episode, Natsume sees the rotten scoundrel (or WHATEVER IT IS) before he can take a bite. He tosses the tea for all their sakes and ultimately nobody is hurt. But here, in the manga, Natsume has already taken a bite. We see the missing part of the pie, the residue on the fork. Natsume is already screwed. He's going to have food poisoning from Anna's pie, and he still puts her feelings before his own. He'd rather say that the pie is terrible according to his own tastes than to let everyone around know that she made such a health-risking mistake. He drenches the pie so that Mikan and Ruka don't get food poisoning, even if it's too late for him. Natsume leaves, knowing he will look like an asshole, AND with stomach problems on top of that, but at least he's the only one who will be seriously hurt.

This is a pretty insignificant example of a trait that we have seen before with Natsume but haven't really fully explored. It's going to play a major role for the rest of the manga, because Natsume has something of a martyr complex, where he is quick to sacrifice himself because he sees little to no value in his own happiness. This is a small example, and I'm not saying it's not kind of him, but there are consequences with his line of thinking. He's fine with looking like an asshole to protect people, or giving up things he wants so someone else can have it, or blowing himself up so two girls can escape safely. Whenever there's a chance to sacrifice himself, Natsume will take it every single time.

This may seem noble or romantic or admirable but it's not healthy at all. The way he was raised (no shade to Papa Hyuuga and Kaoru but also.... tentatively side-eyeing them for putting so much responsibility on him) and the way he is now tortured by the school has put him in a position where his self esteem is horribly low. This complex of his results in suicidal tendencies, even after he falls in love with Mikan (and even exacerbated by that love). For Natsume, love is sacrifice. He simply cannot love without feeling like he has to give something up. Ideally, he would grow out of this and maybe start seriously choosing himself sometimes. It's not evil to want yourself to be happy and to choose your own well-being, even if it occasionally makes others sad or upset.

In the context of the actual story though, we have yet another glimpse of a complex that will cause a LOT of trouble down the road for Natsume and Mikan.

Conclusion

Natsume has new feelings for Mikan and is having trouble navigating them. They will cause even more trouble in the next essay. We also touched more on Natsume's self-sacrificing tendencies and how devastating they will turn out to be. These tendencies will be consistent and persistent throughout the manga in regards to NatsuMikan's relationship, and cause more problems. These problems will pop up a bit in the next part, so stay tuned!

Also, small note: I call him Ruka and not Luca because I got used to it after watching the anime and through scans and fanfics. I heard his name pronounced that way and at first thought it was a Japanese name so I simply copied the pronunciation. When I found out it was supposed to be Luca, I'd already been using Ruka for a while. I don't really want to switch to using Luca most of the time because I know people in real life named Luca/Luka and I talk enough about GA on the daily where it might feel strange to me. I use Luca sometimes when I'm talking to others who prefer it, but Ruka is what I'm used to. I hope this isn't frustrating, but understand that I pronounce Killua's name (from HxH) like "Ki-ru-a" as well and in my head "Gakuen Alice" is pronounced "Gakuen Arisu" because I pronounce things based on what I hear when watching the anime ;-; These are things I have no real desire to change because they sound right to me. I'm sorry. (Nobody has said anything or complained, and this is not a vague or anything like that! I just wanted to say that I know it's supposed to be Luca and it's not my intention to be disrespectful when I pronounce/spell it Ruka. I am fucking crazy, but I am free.)

I'll start with the older one, their name is LunarStorm (but has been known to go by Lunar, and whatever nicknames are given.) Although, while their frame type is quite similar to Solus' they take way more after Megatronus in personality. (Stubborn, which is something they get from both creators tbh. Next is Asmodai, often referred to as ‘Moo’ by Lunar. He takes after Megatronus in looks, sharp. Kind of a resting face that makes him look angry 24/7. But he's actually really sweet and kind, he can be stubborn, and have a temper. But it's something you see very rarely.

Both are their creators pride and joy though, I'd love to hear your opinions/feedback on them. And maybe even how Solus and Megatronus are with them. Totally up to you though! I just need more content of the primes lol

I personally see both Solus and Megatronus being good parents. Solus can be a workaholic so I see her getting a bit frazzled at times and Megatronus being like ‘Hey, let me take over for a bit’, and him just carrying the two around. I saw a post a while back where the headcanon was that sparklings were basically like magnets and could just hang onto their creators that way? Anyway, I have never gotten that out of my head since and I love the idea of Megatronus just carrying his kids around.

No doubt they both hope for them to take after themselves in certain ways. I personally headcanon both Solus and Megatronus as being able to withstand high temperatures. Megatronus for obvious reason (Mr set himself on fire), and Solus working in a forge with hot molten metals. So perhaps the two inherent that kind of physical attribute?

They would also likely be interested in if the two kiddos develop any sort of powers. And if two Primes have kids, do those kids then have a better chance of also being Primes? They have no clue. But with all the responsibilities they’ve had in their lives, I don’t think they hope for their kids to be Primes like them.

Megatronus absolutely would want to teach them how to fight, and Solus would 100% be excited to make them their own personal weapons. Let’s be real, she probably started planning their weapons from the day she knew they were coming. And she likely had weapons picked out prior to names.

Alastor/Ozzie

((They like singing neon black-lit jazzy diss tracks about other people's naive cutesy idealistic musical numbers, so as far as I'm concerned they're made for each other. Alastor is the most powerful sinner to ever arrive in Hell and he uses his power to wander aimlessly looking for live entertainment. Ozzie is the ruler of one of the rings of Hell and he spends his time running a night club. Are you seeing the parallels. Two people who hold the world in the palm of their hands and all they wanna do is watch it sing and dance. And we know Ozzie's attracted to funny little mean guys, he's dating one already. (Speaking of which, side note: Ozzie/Alastor/Fizz.)

Sexually speaking—y'all know I like doing weird experiments with Alastor's asexuality—I think there's a lot of fun potential to pairing up an asexual character with the literal embodiment of lust itself. Now, I'd be really picky about HOW that's handled. I'm bored by sitcom-level "character A has 0% libido and character B has 1000% libido and they're mad at each other! *cue the laugh track*" interactions, and I'm also bored by cutesy idealistic "he was used to nothing but lust... until he found someone who loved him WITHOUT lust... making their love different... more pure..." type plots, so like, that side of the dynamic would have to be written by somebody I trust. But in this hypothetical scenario here I'm the one who'd be writing them, and I trust my own tastes completely, so no problems there.

Overall Alastor/Ozzie isn't quite OTP level but it's well within my top 5 Alastor ships.

As far as this particular blog is concerned: this is a pairing I think could have a LOT of potential, given where my Alastor here currently is—namely, the fact that he's horny all the time, HATES it, and wants desperately to change this. Asmodeus is in the best position to help a succubus rise in social ranks, but is also the least likely to be sympathetic to a succubus who desires to no longer feel lust. He could be a powerful ally but also extremely motivated to sabotage Alastor's ambitions. On top of that, any platonic/romantic attraction he'd feel for Ozzie would be twisted up in lust and therefore dangerous: if it turned sexual (and it would turn sexual), if there's anyone who would turn Alastor's already barely-manageable libido into a full-blown 24/7 completely unmanageable addiction, it would be the king of lust. There is a significant and worrisome chance that hooking up with Ozzie could break Alastor's brain, leave him finally unable to think about anything except sex, destroy the remains of his personality, and ruin his life. ... But like. He insults his customers with jazzy musical numbers and that's very attractive. This is the kind of ship that could be very good for Alastor or EXTREMELY destructive, and both possibilities have me rubbing my hands together.

At some point I'm planning to write a fic about this AU succubus Alastor and I've been toying with the idea of Alastor/Ozzie being a main ship in it.))

Honestly my feelings towards rpf are kinda complicated like I think it's creepy to write fanfic about real people like they're fictional characters bc they're not fictional and treating them as if they are, by writing fic about them, is just. Weird ? But well if you keep it to yourself/the fans then it's fine ig. Hey I've even read some myself (last year, in the wake of the November 5th Events ™️ I read spn rpf lmao. Though I was really really stressed at the time and I'd have read anything to distract myself). And we all wondered about celebrities' lives at some point so I don't think it's unhealthy unless you involve them or start thinking that your vision of them is the truth.

1. What is your favorite fic you have under your belt?

This was like the hardest question you absolute jerk. You’re not supposed to pick favorites of your children! I’ve put the most thought and effort into Halfway though, so I’ll pick that. 

2. What is your favorite snippet of dialogue?

I really really love writing Stan and Kyle talking so my favorite dialogue is probably the beginning of Hear Me Out. I wouldn’t say dialogue is really my strong suit but I just love writing these two interacting. 

3. What inspired [insert fic]?

Something in the Woods actually kind of came out of nowhere, haha. I’m not even sure where it came from but I wrote that first sentence: ‘There was something in the woods that knew Stan’s name.’ and the rest sort of blossomed from there into weird creepiness, of its own accord. You know those stories that just kind of explode out of nothing in one go? That kinda thing.

5. What’s your favorite headcanon you use in fics?

This is hard because I change headcanons around a lot so they can change from one fic to another, which is probably not a good thing, but I digress. I guess I’ll go with that I like to give Kyle some sort of mental disorder, most often anxiety but that varies. Tweek is always anxiety 101 so I like to give some other characters some anxiety or mental illness too for balance. (Before anyone screams, I have an anxiety disorder and mood disorder so if that affects what you think are my qualifications for doing so here ya go.)

6. What’s the detail you wait on bated breath for readers to notice?

This is gonna sound dumb, but I gave Stan the nervous habit of clicking his phone on and off when he’s nervous in By Virtue of Passion, and when people picked up on that it made me really happy. Probably because it’s such a mundane quirk that I gave him and the fact that it was picked up shows people are really paying attention. Bated breath is a bit of an overreaction though, haha.

9. What’s the fic you like the least?

I’m not horribly happy with a lot of the little one-shots and things I’ve put together here and there, but without counting those, probably Strike Through Him? My opinion and characterization of Crenny has changed SO MUCH since then that I hardly even associate it with my views anymore, but I also don’t like deleting fics so the garbage stays. 

11. What’s a fanfic idea you haven’t done yet?

I’m participating in a project going by the Crenny Big Bang (@crennybigbang2017 if you wanna check it out, though it’s only just starting up!) and without revealing too many details, think South Park (specifically Kenny) meets Danny Phantom. Yes there will be ghosts, and probably ghost fighting, and Crenny shenanigans, and it’s gonna be a real fun time. Keep a look out if you’re interested! Also worth noting even though it’s already started up is The Immigration Issue, because it’s actually so fun to write with somebody else (love u <3) and I love the concept, it’s so cool! We put a bunch of effort into plotting it out which has been really fun and it’s only gonna go up from here. 

13. Do you have a favorite character to write for?

I adore both Craig and Stan. Craig because he works well as a pretty neutral protag, and Stan because I almost always write him with Kyle, and Kyle is the sort of character I definitely like to write most from someone else’s POV. The boy’s got issues. He’s a little crazy, and writing Stan as somewhat of a straight-man character gives me a chance to highlight that. 

14. What’s your favorite shipping fic you’ve written? Favorite gen fic?

Favorite shipping fic might honestly be Hear Me Out. I had such a blast writing it and I looooove writing Style. I think I’ve only written a handful of gen fics, but I actually really like Love In Rainstorms, because I love Carol McCormick and Kenny and it was so fun to bring life to a character often forgotten.
