Do you have any advice for people who want to start writing requests?

hmm this is quite an interesting question, so i hope my advice can help !

this is full of my personal advice / experiences on writing requests so fair warning that it might not reflect your experience.

then let's start trau's guide n advice for writing requests :

[ first, do you have the time ? ]

i think that the first step to starting requests is to think abt whether you have the time or not to write requests. i started out writing my requests when i had a period of lull in my classes, we weren't learning much content n we were just working on coursework. so i thought that i had some time to spare that i could use to write requests !

i think i underestimated how much time requests take to do (for me, at least. ik some ppl churn out requests p quick but i'm a slow writer) and it ended up bleeding into my exam time. next time i take requests i'll definitely be more mindful of the timing.

[ second, make some rules for yourself. ]

an important aspect of requests are the requests guidelines. make a guideline of what you will/won't write, chars you will accept/reject, anything else you'd like to add. personalize it to yourself and your boundaries. here's my request menu for reference. i would recommend looking around at bunch of other people's request rules for ideas + to figure out where your boundaries lie.

[ third, DON'T FORGET TO STICK TO YOUR RULES !! ]

i'm a person who was constantly feeling bad abt rejecting requests back then, i still do sometimes, but then you gotta remember:

you made those rules in order to suit your needs. the requester failed to meet those. so you have the right to delete said request.

don't be afraid to delete anything you can't / struggle to write. forcing yourself to write is gonna make it harder n harder to keep writing consistently. you're supposed to be enjoying your writing, so please write things that you are passionate abt writing !

and don't be afraid to delete anything that goes above character limit boundaries. in terms of this, say you have a limit of 3 per hc, and they send in 4, you could even just chose 3 n leave the fourth one; reminding them that you have a limit for 3 chars max.

be strict with people when needed, and remind them of your rules. you deserve to be respected ! they're the ones coming to ask you for requests that will take your time and hard work, so make sure that you're being treated with respect.

[ fourth, now you have ur request guidelines + time to write. now what ? ]

i think the best course of action would be to make a requests open post ! make sure to tag it properly as well, that's detrimental to making sure that people are able to see it.

as an example, this was what i tagged for my first requests open post. + i put in my request menu as a link to make sure people knew my guidelines.

[ fifth, you need to have patience. ]

starting requests was scary sjkdfsjfk like i didn't know if anyone would ever want a request from me, hell, i didn't really have anything on my blog except for two fics, so i was really nervous... you don't know when your first request is going to come, so have some patience ! also, get off tumblr n do something you enjoy instead of stewing in nerves jskdfjk

i would recommend maybe writing something as an example of what you can do, and posting it. here you can mention that your requests are open, link your request menu, and people feel more inclined to request that way.

i remember that for me, i had three requests after hours of waiting, so i decided to work on one of them and publish it + include that my requests were open. (this was the request) and after publishing that, i ended up getting more requests, since people read what i can do, liked it, and wanted requests of their own.

i guess that concludes my advice on how to start writing requests ?? i have a few more pieces of advice tho, so i'll include them below:

[ about: banners n aesthetics ]

aesthetics are important, though it won't make or break your writing. you don't have to have a super beautiful set up from the get-go, you can adapt and change it as time goes by. i've recently revamped my masterlist after a month or two of having this blog open, so it's fine if your set up is simple ! just find something that suits you.

and as for how to make banners, ik there's some blogs out there who use programs like photoshop, but i'm here to say that i personally create all my banners n headers, etc. on my phone. so i'm just saying, it's definitely possible for you to make them too ! (if you're curious i use the free version of picsart)

i'd recommend using official art for your banners: card art, chibi sprites, manga art, etc. or even your own art if you're feeling fancy ! just please don't use fanart unless you've gotten express permission from the creator.

[ about: tagging ]

tags are king on tumblr, so make sure you also tag your writings accordingly ! don't be afraid to use a lot of tags bc it "looks ugly" all those tags are gonna make it so people can see your writing, so don't be ashamed to use a lot of tags. (also don't use unrelated tags on a post, like tagging a char when they weren't mentioned)

[ about: time it takes to write requests ]

no one's expecting you to churn our requests as fast as you can. you should take your time to write, and release them at a pace you're comfortable with. don't feel bad for taking a long time on requests, you have your personal life to deal with on top of writing, so prioritize yourself !

i hope that this was satisfactory advice :D all i can say is if you're contemplating writing requests, go for it ! i never thought that i'd get this far, and all i can say is that i've had a blast writing requests + making new friends <33 it's definitely something that i don't regret doing despite my initial worry about everything.

Okay, your tags on The Empty Post have showed up in my notes and I have to ask. Tell me more. Tell me it all. All of the feelings and thoughts about that scene because what I’ve seen so far? Absolute perfection and I agree wholeheartedly.

Thank you! Okay I basically unloaded most of my thoughts in my tags here but let’s go through this one more time. I may add: this was already said a thousand times by better meta writers than me 3 years ago when season 13 was actually airing. And I will ramble a little about Purgatory, too. Now with that out of the way: 

The Empty. Canonically it is a being, a living immortal being that rules the place or an ‘anti-place’ where angels and demons go are sent to when they die to dream of their regrets forever (this sounds awful and like a punishment for dying despite being immortal, for getting themselves killed or something). Also: the Empty was there before Creation, the Nothingness before Darkness and before Light. 

Okay. But let’s see what other things the Empty represents: lack of anything. Complete nothingness that Cas got sucked into (by Lucifer but also by helping the Winchesters). Now we know that Cas‘I am afraid I might kill myself’tiel had his issues, right (I still can’t believe that we are praising 8x08 thee Hunteri Heroici for being a filler episode with Cas - which is awesome, don’t get me wrong - but we all keep forgetting what he actually did say to Dean there!!! Dean says: are you afraid the angels will kill you if you show up in Heaven? And Cas looks straight into his eyes and says: After all I’ve done, when I see Heaven, I am afraid I might kill myself).

Please remember that it’s not only Dean, Mr. ‘Purgatory was pure’. Cas, after all he did in season 6, after his death in s7, after coming back and being literally haunted by everything he’s done, must have felt that Purgatory was liberating, too. It was some kind of an Alternative Universe where he didn’t have to face the consequences of his actions. He was free of them. It was literally his escape AND additionally it was (well, according to good old christian lore, maybe not specifically spn lore) a place where you are supposed to atone for your sins so there must have been the feeling of atoning, of making things right without actually doing anything specific, where having to survive and not get eaten by the Leviathans was his main problem (= surviving was just enough, nothing was asked of him), which, compared to all he’s done, wasn’t that hard or difficult. He found himself running away from Leviathans which could mirror running away from consequences of his actions - but it was Purgatory, it was at the same time atoning for what he did. It was EASY.

Cas basically confirms that he officially stayed in Purgatory because he didn’t think he deserved to go back to Earth and that is true but what he doesn’t say is: ‘Purgatory was pure and easy and kill or be killed and no other worries than that, no thinking, no real responsibilities which actually was a nice escape from the real world after all I did and been through in the past 3 years’. He wanted out, he wanted an easy choice. Okay, maybe he wasn’t actively looking for an easy way out but when it presented itself - when they appeared in Purgatory - he took it like a gift. We’re talking about a character who spent all his life following orders, who finally broke free and found himself completely lost in the freedom of choices, directionless and maybe wanted an escape. He must have felt overwhelmed but all this freedom (which he basically confirms in 6x20 freedom is a length of rope and god wants you to hang yourself with it). I COMPLETELY understand that choice to escape. 

So in seasons 8-12 Cas has a lot of stuff going on in his head, he gets lobotomized for most of season 8, he is hurt and tortured and treated like shit for most of season 9 and 10 and he ultimately gives himself up to Lucifer in s11 and then he almost dies in 12x12 and he never really got to talk about all of this or work this things out with anyone because Sam or Dean are not really the most talkative guys and Dean in 10x09 basically tells Cas to ‘let it go and not think about it’ which is a shitty advice to someone who suffers from some mental issues if I am being honest (this is like. ur depressed? oh go for a run and smile and stop being sad!!! kind of advice if you ask me). So these issues only grow and grow and start eating him up and please remember that at the very same time Cas is falling in love. I said it previously but I think the moment he realizes what he really feels is 12x12 when he is dying. In that moment he is able to name this feeling but it’s of course covered by: ‘I love you. I love all of you’. 

Now in season 12 he finally gets a proper arc with Kelly (god bless her, honestly, she and Cas had one of the most healthy relationships ever portrayed on tv and it wasn’t even romantic, I could go off about this but it’s getting really long anyway). So he kind of is on his way to find a purpose again - Dean is saved (from hell, from Michael, from the Mark), so he focuses on Kelly and unborn Jack and maybe in his relationship with her he rediscovers love (not necessarily romantic but he sees how she loves Jack) and he does all he can to protect her from basically everyone including the Winchesters. And he promises he will take care of Jack and then. Then he is killed by Lucifer (shattered at the altar of Winchester because he gets involved in the Apocalypse World because of them while having built something for himself with Kelly and Jack BUT still not having properly processed all his previous trauma). 

Okay, so fast forward: Cas is woken up by Jack in the Empty. He is of course confused and stuff (we still don’t know what was he dreaming about all this time he spent there now that we know this is a place where angels and demons dream about their mistakes and regrets <- fanfiction gap #1). He wakes up, he is ‘greeted’ by the Empty and one of the first things he says is that he has to go back because Sam and Dean need him. 

This is his first, automatic thought - I (probably) don’t want to go back, but Sam and Dean need me so I have to, I don’t want to go back for myself because I never wanted to since Purgatory but I know I have to. He doesn’t even think about Jack in this moment. I... maybe it is a stretch but I sense a kind of fear in these words. It’s like he thinks: ‘if I had the chance to come back and chose not to come back from selfish reasons then if the Winchesters ever find out about this they will be angry at me’. But I might be reading too much into this, but on the other hand Jesus fucking Christ this is precisely what happened in Purgatory. He chose to stay although he had a chance to return and the effect was Dean being mad at him. Talk about trauma--

Then the Empty (who was in Cas’ mind) voices his biggest fears: 

'I know who you love, I know what you fear. There is nothing for you back there. Wouldn't you rather be a fond memory than a constant festering disappointment?'

There is a lot to unpack here because this is the Empty’s (who, as stated at the beginning can be read as a manifestation of not only death but also Cas’ depression and self-worth issues) reaction to Cas saying that Sam and Dean need him. She says: uh oh you’re wrong<3 I know who you love, what you fear, the is nothing there for you, sweetie. Essentially: they don’t need you. No one needs you or wants you there. They are better off without you. Wouldn’t you rather be a fond memory (of actually being useful as in: saving Dean from hell, helping to stop the Apocalypse, helping to fight the Leviathans) than a disappointment (failing powers, makes mistake after a mistake, chooses to protect the unborn Antichrist rather than killing him before he’s born - and not to make this whole thing worse but this is what Dean has the audacity to say to Cas in 15x03: why if something goes wrong it always seem to be you).

I will now allow myself for some privacy, because I am a person who dealt with these kind of thoughts in my head for years, these are straight up suicidal thoughts: no one needs you, no one wants you, you are a disappointment and if you die you will be fondly remembered, everyone is better off without you. And we know Cas was suicidal because he literally tells us in 8x08 and we have no proof that he somehow got rid of these thoughts, ever. If anything, they were always there, present, if not growing. Thoughts like that don’t just disappear. Please remember one more time what was happening to Cas in seasons 8-11. He wasn’t healing. He was getting worse, while all this time managing to keep his head above water for someone else, while the guilt was rising and rising. 

If the Empty represents all his issues: depression, suicidal thoughts, guilt, self-hate, lack of self-worth, and what she offers is: eternal sleep. Maybe not entirely peaceful sleep, but sleep nevertheless, no consequences, no facing your fears, no dealing with anything, an escape, sleep - 

And she prompts him to stop fighting, to go back to sleep because there is nothing to fight for (now the symbolism of him being waken up by JACK who was his new found purpose just before he got killed), but she makes a mistake to confront his thoughts and fears with him. She makes a mistake of taking a ‘physical’ form, putting on his face and voice his fears. And Cas is a warrior and he kind of hates himself, so his instinct was to fight. Of course it was easier not to think about all of these stuff at all, to push it back, to try to forget. But once he was forced to face all of these? He fought back. AND HE WON!!!!! 

WHAT A MESSAGE TO SEND RIGHT?!!! You might have all these issues and not want to face them because you feel you will crush under them but look: when you are forced to face them it turns out you are somehow way stronger than them!!! The moment you choose to fight you already won, you are already saved!!! Because ultimately these are your thoughts and this is your mind and you control it, no one else! The moment you decide, you choose, to take control: you win. You are saved because you chose to save yourself because you decided you are worth saving. And the Empty (and everything she represents) immediately gets angry and lets him go, ultimately annoyed because he dared to defy her and she just can’t win with someone who decides he wants to be free. WHAT. 👏🏻  A.  👏🏻 WONDERFUL. 👏🏻  MESSAGE.  👏🏻

So... Having said all that. There is only one thing left: I have NO IDEA. NO IDEA. HOW HE FOUND THE STRENGTH. TO STAND UP AND SAY THIS:

I'm already saved. You can prance and you can preen and you can scream and yell and remind me of my failings but somehow, I'm awake. And I will stay awake and I will keep you awake until we both go insane. I will fight you. Fight you and fight you for... ever. For eternity.

re ur tags to be fair on edelgard, ferdinand himself doesnt get main plot time to outline his views and he spends so much of his time in his supports with HER asking for a duel, while having no idea that SHE has no idea of his critiques. i feel like its more just flawed writing/wasted potential (rip ;-;) rather than. her evaluating his critiques and then basically just thinking hes not worth taking seriously.

yeah, i agree! in a way, anyways. i was trying to direct that criticism on the writers, mostly, bc especially when u do look at the other routes, u SEE how much they jipped him in comparison to the other challengers. admittedly, i don't personally like lorenz, so i did not do his supports when i played vw (as well as the fact that i've only played through vw once bc it messed me up real bad n i hated it <3 not ur fault claude i just wasn't prepared for dimitri's death being that graphically described) n that is why i'm going off a comparison to felix/dimitri moreso than lorenz n claude.

i just always found it interesting n also very. sad. how easily n readily dimitri accepted felix's criticisms n challenges, vs how edelgard n ferdinand aren't even really allowed to talk about theirs, n honestly though? okay this is. this is opening up a can of worms, actually, so bear with me.

ferdinand not being taken seriously really at ALL during cf was one of my biggest gripes with the route, actually. this extends to ss, too, but less so. especially considering that his idealogical challenge of edelgard's own views is really, really solid. a lot of people assume that the felix/dimitri clash is idealogically based moreso than anyone else, but. it isn't. dimitri dislikes faerghus' sacrificial knight culture (see: his entire support chain with ingrid) just as much as felix does. the tragedy behind those two is that they actually AGREE on a LOT of things, they just each cannot get past their own personal n emotional burdens (until their a support) to actually communicate properly about it. n again, anyone please feel free to add onto this post about claude n lorenz for a more. well rounded look on all this. but with ferdinand in regards to edelgard, he very directly opposes her ideals n her way of doing things.

where felix has a hard time having a proper conversation with dimitri about their similar views bc of past trauma n emotional walls, personal things, ferdinand puts his relationship as a challenger to edelgard above EVERYTHING; n believes that regardless of their status as friends, rivals, enemies, or anything else, he must fulfill that role regardless.

but, anyway. ferdinand is right, is what i'm trying to say, n he deserves to be taken seriously bc the things that he says are incredibly important. what really struck me about his a support with edelgard was that it was such an integral conversation/included such integral information, n yet it was relegated to a support that players could potentially miss/skip? edelgard having not even THOUGHT of commoner education n the ramifications of a meritocracy until ferdinand mentions it (which is doubly concerning when u remember a supports are locked until post timeskip, meaning she's been leading this charge without ANY detailed thought to support in the aftermath beyond vague mentions of it through "inspirational speeches" n shit) is like. something that definitely should have been addressed within the main story.

anyway, after uhh. going off on that, i think my original point was that yeah, ferdinand isn't taken seriously in the narrative. which he suffers for, unfortunately. especially considering he has a very strong case for his challenging of edelgard's ideals, n that was reduced to just. general competitiveness.

with that SAID, however. i also think i can go off of this point to elaborate on how that relates to edelgard n how specifically in her supports with ferdinand n linhardt, it really shines through how unprepared she seems? she started a war that would uproot fodlan, n she had no (concrete) plans for the political aftermath, even though she planned to assume absolute power?? did she just like, tell hubert to deal with that, or something? i do think that a lot of that could've been the writers reluctant to get too into politics, but.......still.

basically, ferdinand had the potential to really knock her off her feet in the sense of hitting her with hard truths about the things that she was neglecting to think about at all, n he didn't. n it's really unfortunate. bc it REALLY could've been so much more interesting. n it's a disservice to him to shoehorn him into this silly rival role even post timeskip, after he's matured past the young adult who put so much stock in that image.

re: my specific tags, too, i was trying to say something specific about edelgard n how i think she would've responded to ferdinand if they had been allowed to actually discuss, but my brain is off in genshin land rn n it's been a month or two since i was on the three houses train, so if anyone else sees this post n has these same thoughts/can word them better, please do.

n on a final note, i suppose i can understand how ferdinand was treated if u take cf as a villain route: from that pov, challenges don't mean anything, right? so why even include them. especially considering the uhh. other various things about cf that play into that. but regardless, i still think it's a disservice to ferdinand to discard him completely, even if u are trying to go full blown "propaganda route" lmao. especially bc it's in his nature to challenge edelgard no matter what. ESPECIALLY when he believes she's wrong.

I dunno if this was a legit question asking for a legit answer, but I do happen to have a legit answer so I might as well give it! If I wanted to go into detals with it it’d take me forever though, so allow me to separate it into two points to make it easier

I learnt how to be very fast in putting down my lines and trained myself into not overthinking every single dot I put down. This took about five or six years of drawing daily and a whole life of drawing occasionally before then, because to do so you need to reach a point where you’re drawing something you’ve drawn so many times that by now your hand sort of goes without you needing to think about it much, so it’s not a fast process, but boy is it worth it. Mostly learning how to not overthink it, overthinking it used to be 90% of my time spent on a drawing and dear god did it suck the joy out of everything I drew

I have two very distinctive ways of approaching a drawing, one where I actually put effort in it and the other where I just want to let the squiggles out of my pen, and warm ups are the second one - the lack of effort I’m putting in can have different forms and show in different ways, so a warm up could be a fully colored piece as it could be just a pencil doodle, depending on where and on what exactly I’m being lazy: it could be the type of tool I’m using that allows me to draw without having to line, it could be a very tiny canvas that lets me avoid a ton of details a big canvas would demand. I might be cutting the time I usually put in making sure my anatomy is correct, I might be using a shading technique that takes a tenth of the time my usual one would, I might be using a style that’s just easier and faster to draw, or drawing characters I’ve drawn a trillion times in extremely generic poses and clothes. There’s a lot of things that I can do to make things faster for me! It’s skills you gain as you draw a lot - you learn how to draw things the hard way, and then you realize that along the way you learnt how to do them the easy way too

Ahhh god thank you so much!! And... hmm let’s see if I can word this properly and have it make sense - always keeping in mind that this is just my opinion, of course!

If all you want to do is to draw, then all you need to do is to pick up your pencil and draw - it’s really that easy as far as I’m concerned. You don’t need to know anatomy in depth to just draw, everyone has seen a person, everyone knows how a person looks. That is, if all you want to do is to draw for the sake of drawing. If you want to draw an anatomically correct looking human being, though, you do need to know how anatomy works - and the deeper you’ll go into studying it the more correct your people will look. It’s kind how everyone can draw a bicycle, but if you want to draw a realistic bicycle you’re gonna need to look up references for it, you know? It’s all on the level at which you’re interested in drawing, the more technically skilled you want to be the more you’ll have to study

As for my personal experience with this, I hate studying with a passion. Studying puts a damper on my enjoyement of everything, and drawing isn’t excluded from this - you put a book in front of me expecting me to study it and suddenly I never want to pick up a pencil again. This means that I never sat down and studied anatomy in depth and all in one go just to learn how to draw a human being, but it doesn’t mean that I didn’t, slowly and now and again and in bits and pieces, study parts of the body to get a better understanding of it. I know better about the skeleton than I do about muscles, and I still have enough to learn about everything that anyone who’s studied anatomy properly would find a trillion mistakes in everything I draw, but my way of going about drawing has always been and always will be putting my enjoyement of it first and foremost, so I’m not interested in putting myself through a tour-de-force to learn everything there is to know about anatomy just to make my doodles look appealing to someone with a medical degree haha I’m just doing me, and when the mood is right I look up how to properly draw something, but until then I just do it as best as I can with my limited knowledge, being fully aware that what I’m producing is far from accurate but being willing to make that compromise for my own comfort

So that’s my opinion on it lol it all boils down to how important it is for you to know how to properly draw the human body - of course it’s gonna look more professional and better if you’ve studied it, but everyone has their own priorities, you know?

So pretty much my way of learning this specific skill was being obsessed with elves when I was fifteen and wanting to draw them all the time  and also for whatever reason being convinced that they were not supposed to wear shoes so I just drew a lot of feet with references and tutorials and stuff till I could draw my elves properly. Which isn’t necessarily what you need to do to learn how to draw feet, but, I mean, it worked for me lol

sokka is navigator, one look at the stars and he knows where they are instantly, he charts a course in record time, captains have in fact fought over him but he is nothing but loyal to his captain!!!

aang spends at least half his time in the sails, as lookout and keeping knots secure(? idk shit abt sailing haha) he’s also the fastest one they got, no matter if he’s running, swimming or paddling a small boat

suki is the best fighter they have bc of course she is (also theres no misogyny in this bc i said so) grown men shit themselves when they see her / also shes boatswain (the boatswain was in charge of a ship's anchors, cordage, colors, deck crew and the ship's boats, and would also be in charge of the rigging while the ship was in dock)

toph! makes! bombs! also if u give her a gun that u found thats been underwater for three months and u give her like 2 hours, not only is it completely functional afterwards but it somehow works better than before?

katara is quartermaster and shes def like 30% of how yue keeps her crew in line

haru is ship cook (i know this has zero connection to canon but have you considered boi soft and warm like bread)

teo is the ships carpenter (highest ranking if they got more than one)

jet is a fighter obvs, also him and sokka do NOT get along but yue has this real icy stare that makes them both shut up immediately

smellerbee is dating toph and yue is not opposed to their relationship but does make sure theyre not around eachother too much when explosives are also near bc those 2 def get up to some wild shit

longshot is obvs the best shot they have and is the other lookout

appa is a parrot and he spends all of his time being adorable

iroh is still his uncle in this, but zuko doesnt know that, so he thinks he’s just this weird hermit guy that finds him and takes him in

also they’re def supporting everyone who opposes ozai as asafely as they can on whatever weird remote island theyre at

once zuko joins the crew of the avatar, sokka laughs like straight five minutes abt zuko thinking he could navigate his stolen boat after not even learning how to properly read a map, not to mention everything else that goes into navigating and zuko is like "fuck u" and sokka is like "lets show u how to read a map so this doesnt happen again" still with tears of laughter in his eyes, and maybe later when hes been on the crew for longer and maybe saved sokkas life in a fight, sokka teaches him abt the stars too and cue zuko pining after the way too beautiful guy trying to explain constellations but zuko just keeps getting lost in his eyes and being hyper aware of how close sokkas arm is when he points out specific stars

the reason zuko joins them in the first place is bc the avatar is the only crew that could protect him against azula and ozai and they’re the only ones willing/able to go up against the fire nation

also katara is the first to see zuko after he parted with the fn and she like immediately has a sword to his throat and boi just fucking faints

maybe jee is also a captain in this bc i really like it when the wani shows up in fanfics and maybe they’re not on good terms with ozai but they’re flying under the radar bc its just a small ship and they do bring in their percentage so maybe zuko joins his crew before he goes to find the gaang?

the dai lee is the chinese navy out to get them all

miyuki is one of their highest ranking officers and gives the pirates a run for their money, but weirdly never goes to chase the Avatar

hakoda is also a captain but he’s working under ozai to take the operation down from the inside (also yes of course his husband bato is also there with him ^^)

kue is absolutely some weird hermit guy

I'm interested in writing fic but it seems like everyone who writes on here, who I look up to, has some sort of formal writing training in the past and/or its part of their career. I'm worried that I'll make rookie mistakes that I see everyone here tear apart and no one will read any fic I manage to write. Any advice to overcome this insecurity? Or advice about resources for writing so I can learn about how to write properly? Thanks so much, I love ur writing so much

okay first off....anyone can write. and the “rookie mistakes” that people tear apart are choices that some people deliberately make. there will always be masterposts about some pet peeve that someone thinks is a legitimate writing tip and it’s...not. lolllll you won’t see me reblogging a lot of them just because i feel like SO MUCH of writing has to do with personal style. (unless it has to do with the use of orbs because that is my personal pet peeve like PLEASE DON’T USE THE WORD ORBS FOR EYES. i will still keep reading if i see it, but i just...it pulls me out entirely for a minute before i can bring myself to keep going lol) hell, a lot of my personal style in my fics was torn apart by my english professors in college and don’t even get me started on how much my history professors hated my writing (it was a LOT). so like...don’t care about that. throw all those misconceptions away. just cause someone doesn’t like the overuse of adjectives or adverbs or whatever doesn’t mean you can’t use them.

now to the real meat of this. as i said, anyone can write. i encourage everyone to write. there have been so many studies about how writing and journaling and all of that helps your memory and your brain and all sorts of incredible things, but it also has been proven to help with mental health. i’m a huge advocate of it. even if nothing gets published, writing is amazing. 

assuming you do want it to get published though, here are a few tips i have.

1. build a community around you. find friends who are supportive and can be amazing cheerleaders and maybe help you brainstorm when you’re stuck, etc. i would never have finished my first fic much less continued writing if i hadn’t had such amazing people around me. cheerleaders, brainstorming peeps, and friends make all the difference.

2. you know who else makes a difference? betas and brit pickers. you know why? not only can they help you sift through your fic and figure out where you need to streamline, where you need to flesh it out more, and your grammatical errors, but they can also help preread and boost confidence. “hey, you need to fix these things, but this is amazing!” can be so uplifting and helpful, and betas and brit pickers can help you with that. they can also help boost that confidence that your fic is ready to go out into the world. i have several friends who are too scared to have anyone read or help edit their fics before they post them, but i get too scared when i DON’T have them. my first several fics i had at least three or four betas and then a brit pick on top of all of them because i figured the more eyes i had on the fics, the better quality they would be. i relied on that until i felt stronger and found a few betas who best suited my style (and were as nit picky as i want them to be hah). they do hard and heavy work and are amazing. i thoroughly support you getting them. 

because you know what else they do? they help you avoid those “rookie mistakes” that you really do want to avoid. like orbs. (jk. kinda.)

3. keep trying. @briannamarguerite once told me writing is a muscle (and she probably regrets telling me this since i constantly tell other people this too hahaha) but it really is. you’re only going to strengthen that muscle by continuing to use it. the more you use it the more powerful it becomes. you learn so much and you grow and become better and stronger and more confident. the first several are SCARY. hell, even years later i still get scared to post my fics sometimes when it’s something new. but as time goes on, you really do grow in confidence and it feels amazing to see the growth in yourself as well.

4. we always need more fics, so don’t let the fear of mistakes hold you back. every voice gifts us something brand new and previously undiscovered, even if it feels like it’s just another university coffee shop fic or whatever you’re writing at the moment. i promise, it’s not the same as any other fic out there, and you’ll give your own special take on it, and we need it. we want it. we crave it.

5. have fun. we’re all disasters doing the best we can out here in this fucked up world and finding joy as we are able. if writing brings you joy, if you feel like creating a story from start to finish and sharing it with people gets you excited and makes you happy and productive, then DO IT. fuck the haters. you’re brave and strong and doing incredible things.

so there ya go. that’s my advice. haha 

oh! i just reread the ask to make sure i didn’t miss anything, as for writing resources, honestly i’m not sure where to point you. i know some people who are incredibly serious about their writing and they read all sorts of books about it and follow blogs and stuff, but literally all i do is write stories i would like to read. i’ve been an avid reader since i was in first or second grade and never really stopped, so i kinda ignore any formal training people offer and do my own thing. that said, i’m assuming if you’re asking you actually want references and not just me telling you to free ball it hahaha SO i’m gonna tag some people i feel like will have knowledge and advice of such things, but if i haven’t tagged you, please feel free to still reblog and add your thoughts on the end as well as links to places for this sweet person to check out!

i won’t be repeating myself from before unless it’s to clear up somethin so here we go class

there’s no simple way to this. this relies on so many things such as post quality, interaction, active posting, and personality. if u got a shit personality, u’ll only be in this town for a month or so before getting kicked out in some way. 

make friends. yes, it’s easier said than done, but u gotta. reply to people’s posts, send asks, ask for collabs, make jokes, etc. etc. it helps to hang out w people who have similar aesthetics or interests as you! ur just gonna publicly clown yourself if u just hang out w people who have 0 commonalities w u... 

also posts? POST. preferably only sims-related stuff. many people, including me, avoid blogs that are mixture of irrelevant fandoms or are super personal. make a sideblog or a twitter to put that stuff in. yeah, its fine to post some personal updates here and there but... have mercy

this ties in with your posts getting attention. everyone starts off rough and getting lucky with a single like or even a reblog. it may take some people longer to get through, but you’ll make it if you try hard enough. don’t get easily disheartened!

this is just a reality check everyone needs entering this community, just about ANY community. at some point, you’ll most likely get some form of anon hate in your inbox or on simsecret. don’t take it seriously. laugh it off. make some jokes about it. clown them. key point is that there is a difference between a criticism and just plain rudeness.

within the past year, tumblr has done goofed up bad and has an automated system that flags posts that they believe is “sensitive content”. 99% of the time it isn’t so you gotta appeal it. sometimes, if you’re lucky, it’ll show an appeal button for you on the posts. if not, you can follow this method to appeal. if that doesn’t work, well, might as well just repost it.

most of the things that trigger the system are warmer tones (thinking its skin). i haven’t really noticed what else triggers it but i don’t even think tumblr staff knows that.

there’s been an uprising of patreon creators, esp in the ts4 community, and many use this as a way to earn some money for their work. may it be early releases (most popular), exclusive cc (which you shouldn’t do. it’s shitty), wips, benefits, etc. etc. it’s basically a fancier version of a donation box.

a lot of patreon creators do exclusive cc which is quite frustrating, esp for people who 1. do not have extra cash to spend on two files of cc 2. are literal children and can’t pay. 

support who you want and know who you are supporting. don’t waste your money.

i’m answering this as someone who creates for ts4. download sims4studio and blender (3d program - covers just about everything for ts4). you won’t really need anything else (besides, of course, photo editing programs) until you go on the deep end of 3d meshing. watch youtube videos. read tutorials (and resource tags). go wild with what you wanna do. figure out which area you wanna go ham in. poses, recolors, retextures, new meshes, building, decorating, etc. 

if you’ve been following me for the past couple of months, you know the general jist of this. legally, according to ea’s TOS, anyone is allowed to do whatever with someone’s UGC (cc) even without notifying them. this is when it gets a little crazy.

simblr has the reputation of having rigorous TOUs where you cannot edit at all (or you can with special permission). understandable, it’s just a respect of each others’ rules. people then go to the next step to copyright their cc, which isn’t truly legally correct. i’m no lawyer, but once you put your shit into the .package format (dedicated format for sims content [EA ownership]) then it’s a free for all.

here on tumblr, people can submit DMCAs and take down your posts and give you strikes to your account (three [uncontested] strikes and you’re out within an 18-month period). for example, marigold (sims4marigold) sent me 2 DMCAs over 3 of my posts that recolored/retextured their cc. with my cc respectfully going along their TOU (reminder: this is all just a respect thing), I submitted a counter claim through support (follow the steps it shows > if it doesn’t show, choose the “other” option) and explained how the DMCA was false. 

you will then go through a ridiculous process that will take months. you will need to submit personal information to properly submit a counter, so be wary of that. after that is processed and you agree to all the terms, you will go through a 10-business day process of waiting to see if the DMCA sender rebuts it. typically, such as in my case, they did not so my content was restored after the wait. 

if you were truly falsely DMCA’d, this will be a tedious process and annoying, but it’s worth it. contest to all of them and remove those strikes so your account is not terminated permanently.

and that bout does it! those were the tips i could think of that would benefit newbies in the community and hopefully helped anyone else who was a little confused by certain things. if you have any further questions, please go right ahead and ask!

one. we want this to be a happy, active environment, so if you intend to join us, you will be required to be an active member. this means roleplaying with other people - gifsets, mood boards and music posts will not count. you can answer asks from other characters, but you must also complete para-based threads or else it will not count! if you go five days without activity, you will be given a twenty four hour warning. no active posts? your character will be reopened. three repeated activity check appearances will also result in your character being reopened.

two. players may request a (semi or full) hiatus after they have been an active member of the roleplay for three weeks. we appreciate life happens and we’re here to help! please note that hiatuses will last a maximum of one week, with extensions for extenuating circumstances. you will not be able to take another hiatus for three weeks. you can request a hiatus here. failure to return after your hiatus will result in your character being reopened.

three. we have a discord for plotting purposes and fun discussion! while joining this is not mandatory, it is preferred as we do talk frequently there! but out of character drama is the worst thing in the world. if you’re having issues with another member, please speak to an admin. we want this to be a fun, active environment and will not tolerate any form of hate speech, bullying or anything like it. evidence of such activity will result in immediate reopening of all characters, blogs unfollowed and possible block if required. anon hate will not be posted and will be blocked; if you have a problem, speak to us as yourself.

four. we have a list of triggers that require tagging (please follow the format on the trigger list for ease of everyone using the same tags!). you must tag these; failure to do so will result in a warning. repeated offences will result in a loss of characters and an unfollow.

five. you may create a multi-muse account if you take multiple characters; however, all accounts must be group exclusive and you should not rp with anyone outside the group on these accounts. speaking of characters, while we are oc friendly, their backstory must be sound/fit in with the roleplay and it is up to admin discretion as to whether we will accept them. please see the oc app here.

six. please try to remain true to your characters. this means please do not use your own knowledge; just because you know something doesn’t mean your character does. for example, carlos doesn’t know how to cast a glamour spell because he’s never seen it happen and in storybrooke, there aren’t exactly magic how-to guides.

seven. please try to roleplay with the whole group. bubble rping is when you only interact with specific muses - it sucks, okay. sure, you might post a little more regularly with one or two people, especially as plots get meaty, but you should still try to interact with everyone.

eight. do not godmod. what is godmodding? it’s where you control someone else’s character without their permission. speak with other players to find out their boundaries and when you need to check with them, and please report it to us if someone has not done this!

nine. players may take up to three characters when joining the roleplay. once they have been active for two weeks, players may take up a fourth, and after another two weeks, they may take a fifth. the current maximum number of characters per player is five, with special consideration of a sixth for particularly active members. additional character requests may be denied if the player is not active enough of their current accounts.

ten. we don’t expect everyone to respond to every single starter; however, before posting your own starter, please check the tag drcamsstarter and respond to at least two (fewer if two not available) starters with less than five notes. this way, no one has a starter left behind! you may then post your own starters.

eleven. anon reserves are accepted for a maximum of twenty four hours. accounts must be sent in within twenty four hours of acceptance or the character will be reopened (unless there are extenuating circumstances; come talk to us! we’re not monsters!). we also accept future character requests, both by members and from anons.

twelve. major plots (pregnancy, death, triggering topics, etc.) must be run by admins before being put into play. likewise, admins will run major events by players so we can get your input.

thirteen. if you’re here simply to ship, please find another rp. this is not the one for you. while we love ships and will be happy to see love blossom, we also expect your characters to interact and develop other kinds of plots. people here simply for shipping purposes will be booted. for what it’s worth - you’ve made two characters and remarkably, they’re the perfect couple. we accept self-ships, as long as self-paras are posted to convey what’s going on in the relationship. and finally in the relationship category, if you and your rp partner decide that a romantic relationship is true love (remember this is partly an ouat rp, so true love is powerful magic!) then please speak with the admin team so we can confirm this and make a note for potential future plots.

fourteen. mondays are mundays (get to know the players on their blog) and saturdays (or sate-ur-curiosity-days. otherwise known as anon question time and sentence starters) will be common practice. this is NOT mandatory - we appreciate that this isn’t comfortable for everyone. 

fifteen. we ask that all players be mindful of their fellow players ages - as such, any nsfw content (sexual acts) must go to private message and not be on the dash. other graphic content (violence etc.) must be properly tagged as per the trigger list. sexual activity between characters should not occur under the age of eighteen.

A good concept which I’m always up for, but to be honest with you I’m more of a fan of the other way around :O like, Kiri is so good and bright and friend with everyone, jealousy might as well be something Bakugou’s used to by this point - but Bakugou, people tend to avoid him or think of him as rude and annoying, Kirishima wouldn’t be used to jealousy at all you know? So I like it that way around more haha

I wouldn’t call it an artblock, it’s more like… like your mind is one step ahead of your skills, I’d say. If treated right, you can turn that feeling into improving your art! What is it that you don’t like? Can you break it down to smaller things? Is it the line work or the coloring style, or even just the way you draw eyes or hands or noses? If you can focus on the smaller parts of what you don’t like in your style you can then look up a way to do the same thing that you do like, and practice that till you’re satisfied with it! One small thing might not mean much by itself, but putting all these small things together is how you make improvement happen :D
