Today I went for a walk and wanted a break from doing digital art so I did some AA sketches (I do love digital art but it's often stressful for me while sketching traditionally is relaxing so that's how it's an effective break for me XD). I mostly sketched Franziska because I find her to be the most fun AA character to draw (which I wasn't expecting getting into this franchise but I'm not disappointed, she's definitely one of my top 10 fave characters!) and felt like drawing her in a ton of cute outfits X3

Now for some context behind some of of my sketches >:-3

1/2 (left): both are just outfits but one is a copy of this outfit while the other I made up! but the pose for second pic is based off a model pose I found on google ages ago because I learnt the creator of Jojo references model poses for his manga and I love how cool Jojo poses are so I of course had to save a ton of model poses XD

3 (left): Felt like trying to draw Franziska being disgusted and while I think I failed the facial expression I ended up enjoying drawing this still. In my head canons Franziska isn't homophobic (Than again I don't even hc Manfred as homophobic), but would shit on Miles for liking men because I also hc her as lesbian and asexual, so the idea of being into men makes no sense to her. She would also caller herself "gayer" as if it's a competition because it is to her.

4 (left): Just tried to draw an older Fran, I like people giving her a pixie cut so I of course had to do that too. Not super happy with result as I think she looks a bit older than late 20's (which is what I was going for) but it's fine :>

1 (right): Just Miles in this pose (sorry it's a pinterest link) cuz why not XD he got sunglasses on because in my mind it adds to the silly concept

2 (right): Tried drawing Miles and Fran being smug, I dislike how I drew Miles but I really like Fran here.

3 (right): based off a meme (Idk the original ver but it's always the same setup as this drawing), probably my least fave of the sketches but it was still fun to draw, I like to imagine in the background a child Trucy is just swallowing a super tall American style burger XD

4 (right): My fave sketch out of all of them! the dress is based off the last picture in this post but I did change it's colour and design a fair bit :P

hey y'all. no one asked for it but here's a review of dip and pip's outfits from their new video from a costume design student's perspective.

*disclaimer: this is all for fun and totally my opinion, everyone has a different style, i’m just working with what they’ve worn before and what they seem to like wearing*

Category 1: Y2Gay

🤔 i don’t know how to feel about this one… it’s not horrendous but dare i say he didn’t go far enough. i’m an ARMY so i can see j-hope wearing this but perhaps the reason why is would work is because he’d add like a white bucket hat, some sunglasses, and some colorful jewelry to fully commit to the maximalist style. also phil doesn’t really suit the baggy style imo. correct me if im wrong.

honestly, i love the sweater. i saw it in the photocards and loved it. this is how dan should wear color tbh. my only critiques would be: a. what are the straps for??? and b. i wonder how it’d look with a dark colored tank top underneath it instead of a black one 🤷🤷

umm…keep the jacket on. i’m sorry, the shirt is too much 😅😅 also i’m so confused by the pants. that’s it. maybe instead of that shirt have just like a nice white shirt. or maybe phil’s out of date gaming console shirt. the eagles are just a lot to look at. also ditch the crocs. again, sorry. a good black chonky sneaker would fit the look better.

i agree with phil that the blue shoes don’t really fit. but i have a solution. wear some white sneakers and the blue mesh top from the q&a video or just a matpat-style blue jacket. other than that, this outfit works. especially with the blonde hair.

phil, please please please get that jacket fitted. it looks ever so slightly too big on him. hot take: the pants aren’t terrible. it’s just terrible with the jacket. the lines are not going in the same direction and it’s really distracting. i think they’d both have the effect he wanted just on their own. not together.

🫢 umm…ok so, how did he not know the shorts were see through?? perhaps it did show on the website but if it was from the same place as the vest and the vest was mesh then you’d assume the shorts were too?? idk anyways. its giving backup dancer construction worker if that makes sense. i’d say go all the way add some fingerless gloves and some design to the shirt and/or vest. go full jojo siwa with it. i do also love the color coordination.

eh…that’s it. it’s not awful it’s not great. maybe it he coordinated the blue with the top. it just looks like a dude headed to the gym. i like the shoes. they do look like the cover of a 90s boy band album. nothing amazing. if the star was blue and silver i’d like it more

Ok so I've decided to do some digging to try to figure out who the other Mystery Link is. I couldn't find a full version of the LU banner but I did find screenshots from this ask that Jojo answered all the way back in 2018. Idk if she cropped the picture after that, but the banner is still the same picture, just cropped.

I decided to start with the first unconfirmed(?) Link, First, since we already know that's who it is. Idk if anyone's done this before but here is my breakdown:

Mystery Link 1 (First) pretty closely matches with the depiction of him from the Manga. The hair matches, you can see the scarf, his pauldron, his belt, his double-crossing straps. It all matches pretty perfectly, so obviously this is First. We already know that this is First.

The question is who is this guy:

He's very confusing.

So we know he has short hair, wears a strap across his chest, has this weird item on his belt, and wears a split tunic. His boots also come up to about his knees. He looks pretty tall, too. His collar is what I would describe as Legend-esque. It's very similar to Legend's collar. He shirt almost reminds me of Wild? IDK why

I'm going to immediately cross out Spirit and Age as candidates since Jojo has already confirmed they're part of Wind and Wild respectively. I also want to cross off Shadow here too. Mr. Mystery is too tall to be Shadow. I'm also quasi-crossing out Cadence of Hyrule Link since I don't think that game was released when jojo was plotting Linked Universe, but I'm not 100% sure about that so it's open I'm just not considering it for this.

So my thoughts immediately go to four other characters. My immediate thought was CDI Link. I also remembered that cartoon Link exists. And upon closer inspection, I'm not unconvinced Mr. Mystery isn't Time.

So let's go through all 3:

CDI Link

Okay he doesn't really match... at all. At the same time, I want to take this moment to take another look at Legend's design since that deviates quite a lot from his canon designs in the series (so does Four's design) so I'm not going to completely dismiss CDI Link's potential. The item on the hip especially seems to match the compasses from Zelda's adventure. But CDI Link himself...

No. His hair is long. His boots kind of match, but he isn't wearing any outward straps and those compasses are also from a game where the protagonist is Zelda not him. Mostly his hair and simplistic design is the main thing throwing me off. Especially the hair.

Likelihood: ehhh we'll go 6/10.

Cartoon Link

I'm going to be honest I forgot he existed.

Anyways he does have the low-cut neck and the short hair and the thing on his belt. But, like every Link, he has the Default Link Outfit which doesn't really say much since (like we see with Legend and Four especially) jojo will change designs to make the Links more distinct. Someone could theoretically argue she wouldn't change Cartoon much since his hair is already brown instead of blonde...

Honestly for being a Link not included in LU, I'd say he matches pretty close to Mr. Mystery. Closer than CDI anyways.

Likelihood: 7/10. Depends on how different Jojo would be willing to make his design for the comic (he could also be combined with CDI Link too, which would up it to 8/10)

But I noticed something else. Mr. Mystery's outfit and face look a little familiar...

Young Time perhaps?

They have the strap, the belt, the low-cut shirt, the short hair. Mr. Mystery's face literally lines up to Time's chin. I feel like that's significant since jojo made all the Links' face and eye shapes distinct.

The only thing I can't think of is why we would have an alternate version of Time. Maybe we'll see Downfall Time? Maybe Time is Sir Raven after all?

Idk, the more I looked at Mr. Mystery the more I realized he looked a lot like Time.

Likelihood: 4/10. It would be cool, but idk why Jojo would make 2 Times join the party.

how do you replicate winx club poses with the mythix designs?

Trial and error

The og Winx Club poses are so very JoJo and I love them for that Everyone's in a weirdo pose that are not easy to try and do irl XD

And a lot of my "method" is just observation and making tweaks and changes as I go. Basically ignoring all laws of physics and anatomy. If it looks like her bones are broken, you're in the green!

Then I tried my best to allow the fabrics to fall nicely with the poses. Bloom, Stella and Aisha's poses are more complicated namely around the legs. Since the dresses are so short, it can look very awkward with complicated leg poses but I think I managed to pull it off without looking like risky business

I also had to curate poses that wouldn't obscure the outfits too much. I think Flora's was pushing that the farthest, as we can't see the collar of her dress. But the HARDEST was Roxy my goooodddd. That pose is just difficult to me idk why, might be the arms that threw me lol

So out of nothing but vague inspiration, I drew my personal headcanon designs for various Links. This is inspired by Linked Universe, but these are not the same characters and while I deeply admire Jojo's work, this is not the same thing. It's not even an au, just how I headcanon them-

So far it's only sksw and botw Link, but I might post more. Maybe?

My personal design for Skyward Sword Link:

For the most obvious changes, I made him chubby and also dark skinned because my dude lives on an island in the sky. Above a cloud barrier. So he'd be getting a lot of unfiltered sunlight, and pale skin would likely result in cancer, so he's got dark skin. He's chubby because Skyloft is probably extremely cold and it'd be a biological advantage to have a thick layer of fat as insulation to protect from the cold. Plus, I like the idea of him getting some well deserved rest after thd stress of his adventure and gaining some fat.

In terms of personality, I imagine him as both an absolute sweetheart and a complete gremlin when he has energy. He's helpful and a kind soul, but it doesn't take away from the fact that he partakes in (mostly) harmless mischief. But, a lot of the time he's exhausted.

Constantly overexerting himself on his journey has permanently damaged his stamina levels. It's also given him joint pain, a fear of lightening, and nerve damage in his right arm and upper back. On bad days, he can barely get out of bed without nearly passing out and he can't move from the pain in his joints. But regardless, he is helpful when he can be, and is stubborn about sitting still and resting unless it's really bad.

For relationships, I'm definitely thinking he's in a relationship with his Zelda. But also, Groose? Idk, these are just random thoughts lmao

My design for botw/totk Link:

I made his scarring a lot worse and got rid of his arm because I think it'd make a lot more sense. I was talking about this with my sibling and they pointed out that they wished Link would keep Rauru's arm, so I'm gonna say that's what happened, but it was strong enough to carry Zelda out of the pond in totk's ending, but deteriorated over a period of time and eventually disappeared. He also lost half his face from guardians when the Calamity struck, and while the shrine of resurrection healed the flesh, it could not replace what was lost. For all of botw, he had one functional eye and ear, but post botw Zelda and Purah made a glass eye to fill the socket and something or other he can see out of it, though it's poor. He's still deaf on that side though. Also, for the most part his ribs are protected only by thick scar tissue and a bit of muscle, so he's haf a fair share of broken ribs and occasional breathing difficulties. He has very little sensation on his scarring, which has lead him to sustain a lot of injuries but be blissfully unaware until he's like "why am I dizzy...? Oh, I'm bleeding-"

On the braid going over his tunic, he has four beads to represent the four champions in their colours. I see him as a sentimental person and kind of a hoarder. Like, he gets all of the Champions' weapons and keeps them in his Hateno house, he stores an ungodly amount of food and materials in his slate, and he collects outfits.

He gives off the vibes of someone who doesn't really understand the concept of gender and love because through his journey, people only really wanted him to save Hyrule and he was useful to them. Even when his friends explained everything, he just can't be bothered, so he's aroace and his gender is *shrugs*. He's chill with being seen as a guy, even if he doesn't feel like anything in particular. Also, he's extremely good friends with all of the sages, Zelda, Purah, and Robbie. He's happy with his life, even if it hasn't been kind to him.

His hair is extremely long and he likes dressing up in his free time because it's his way of self expression and having control over his life. He can't control or change the fact that he has scars, or that he's the hero of Hyrule, or that he'll never be able to experience life like his friends. But he can control if he wants to cut his hair short or keep it long, how he styles it, and the way he dresses. Idk, just for funsies

Okay, as promised here’s my jjba oc who was Jotaro’s roommate in college (until Jotaro moved out)

The full body drawing has the first concept I had of his hair before I settled on the second style, I didn’t feel like changing it. The outfit will probably stay the same though!

I thought that it would be funny to make an OC that was the stereotypical “American” character, Y’know, the one who’s the living embodiment of an American flag, mainly because JoJo’s has actually been really good at not making the kind of character! The most I can think of is Valentine, who has the American flag plastered on his back, but even then he’s like. The president. And he’s not that good of an example of the joke either. Maybe Hol Horse? Just bc he’s a cowboy and his stand is GUN. Tbh, this guy isn’t that good of an example either, but it’s the thought that counts

It’s that concept that made me pick the name “American Idiot” for his name as well! Also because I’ve been listening to it fairly often lately, but mainly because of the trope. I thought a fun way to subvert/add onto the trope was to make him Native American! So I ended up borrowing some ideas from Sand/Soundman from SBR, which does end up working nicely because with the influence of the song “American Idiot” I wanted him to be actually pretty critical of the US government, and Soundman’s whole reason for joining the SBR is to buy back his ancestor’s land from the white men who took it from them. This is why he’s “Autistically talking about politics” lol

In fact, I feel like Jotaro learns about 99% of US politics FROM this guy lol. Even a bit about Italian politics as well, because like stated in the drawings, for funsies, he’s also Italian! Specifically, his mother’s maiden name was “Zeppeli” it could even add onto his character because like Caesar loved to say, to Italians family was most important! How is he related to the Zeppelis? Well Caesar had a bunch of siblings and so one of his brothers had a daughter and that daughter had him! Why did I do this? Because I think it’s funny and that more Joestars should have Zeppeli friends

To add on to the RAH AMERICA! Idea, not only is he wearing an American flag, but also a Hiawatha belt flag and an Italian flag! I’ll probably do some research into the tribes that make up the haudensaunee to update his design a bit, but idk, that’s a problem for future me. Plus, I haven’t designed his stand yet, but to go with his theme, it’d probably just end up being this guy:

Final thing for now! I realized that Jolyne and him have fairly similar hairstyles (two toned hair with braids) so I thought it’d be fun if it was him who first put her hair up like that!

Celia's design- Visual references

thought it might be fun to run though the bits and pieces i picked up from other characters<3

big curl- at first definitely ripped from Kakyoin. later shifted to be more like Juris as a more stylized ringlet curl as oppose to a stretched-out-by-weight curl like Kakyoins. because it was way easier to draw and shade with a simple flow of hair in a spiral

middle curl- Wakaba. i dont have the braincells to go into the link but. there's something there.

golden hair- originally just a more gold-y blond i really leaned into it with some stylistic colour choices then when returning to proper colour i kept it. partly inspired by a lot of the amazing art of Giorno with his hair coloured golden

Trenchcoat [original design] - this is like a convergent choice based on both my old outfits and also Jotaro looking cool as fuck in his. the Jotaro influence was definitely subconscious as i remember getting annoyed that they ending up looking somewhat similar with the long coat trousers and black and gold- its a large part of why i ditched the trench and the predominately black clothes too. a long black trench was my most iconic dress choice for my late teens alongside a miniskirt [which is why i shove her in one- though i put her in denim like the original material of the outfit that heavily inspired her main design]

Curly hair- imma be honest i just wanted a character with short hair and messy curls. like me<3

body type- i was disappointed that Jolyne wasn't as ridiculously buff as earlier jojos. that's kinda it. also i wanted to push myself to draw different body types and go for a physically strong and seems like it female* character

Eyes- mainly the small white pupil. it started with Mura, and Georgie got it to. its just a quick and cool way to make someone noticeably different & even unsettling. Celia often wears sunglasses to cover them when shes trying not to be intimidating

in a similar vein, her hair grew longer over time as i drew it, as i had fun making it almost sentient, defying gravity to cling to her. the longer at the back kinda helps it look more masculine? in a weird way? idk

hair colour pt2: there's a constant battle between red and gold in her, and the dark red shadows in her hair grew to show just how bloodstained she is to her core. also with her only having two skin colours in her pallet with red used for deeper shadows and white and sometimes yellow used for highlight sit makes her seem even more unnatural. for this reason as well as the constant inspiration from Alanna, if Celia didnt have her golden hair i would see her hair as more ginger than blond, more orange than yellow

the arrows- based on the original design of human algebra, where the stand used the fusion 360/blender move tool on an object [god im such a nerd], but the design got to messy, so it was simplified to arrows [this is where the design for her belt- a circle with arrows moving out, as well as the heels of her special boots comes from. which end up looking like a rotated male gender symbol. so foreshadowing for her genderfuckery]

me rating my fave’s fashion choices (chronological order)

1. Babydara

its simple, its safe, u know i love traditional wear. did not expect the bow but am not against it. 7/10.

2. My little baby, off to destroy people

looks traditional yet modern at the same time, its a good look. points for the signature Uchiha High Collar™. also is that a water bottle? nice, stay hydrated for flawless skin, hair, + nails. 9/10.

3. Bro, We Are Teens

kinda like that one sasuke shippuden outfit but with better colors. i like the short sleeves that show off his limp noodle arms, and the bow (throwback to fetus days?) - but idk how i feel about the strange split hemline. would look better if it was just… idk not parting like that??? 7/10. 4. Extreme V-neck

the bow resurfaces! very close to the previous outfit but points for the normal hemline and wrist bandages. 8/10.

5. Every iteration of this outfit

this is p much the same as My little baby, off to destroy people but im sad that he ditched the wide belt. (which either was, or looked like an obi. rly maintained the traditional-but-modern vibe.) plus it would accentuate his waistline better smh. 8/10, but only because he added the gloves. i love gloves. otherwise, 7/10.

6. Whatever the fuck this is

where to even begin. my biggest question is where tf are the straps? ropes? anything? holding that chest piece up??? the color is boring too, u have been so good with monochrome color blocking so far but the armour rly needs to Not be grey (esp since we Know u can do better w the red). on the bright side, the signature mantle is saving this whole look because double tassets sans the middle panel is a Risky move since it kinda weirdly frames the crotch area? case in point, doesnt it just look, idk too empty? at first i was like, maybe a hemline would fix it, but on second thought, that seems a bit weird too - i cant think of anything besides a mantle breaking up the space effectively so congratulations on making it work i guess. 6/10.

bonus: headband doesnt suit his character but it does look adorable on. have a better pic from the manga.

7. The Iconic Look

ok everyone knos how this one looks so i just picked a CUTE display pic. triple  tassets and shoulder pieces r a good addition. out with the grey, in with the blood red, thank u!!! a bold break from the usual emo color palette. objectively a solid look, 9/10. (personally tho, 7/10 cuz once my sister said founder trio kinda look like lobsters and i haven’t been able to Unsee. its fair tho, i guess the armor does look… vaguely,. crustacean-y ㅠㅠ also i miss the wide sleeves and uchiha collar. uchiha collar is gr8 bc it both conceals,,, and reveals,, like head on, the high neckline covers, but from an upwards angle,, its like looking into a bowl or smth… collarbones on display, aaaaaaaa)

8a. Can i consider this an outfit?

ok i have slight emetophobia so this scene was mcfreakin whack and we cant even rly see half his body but im assuming this is p much the outfit in 8b minus the gloves… we do get the scars tho which look kinda cool and is it just me or does it look like his hair is in a pony?? 10/10, cuz no hashiboob.

8b. No More Limp Noodle Arms, aka How-did-Amaterasu-Not-Get-on-His-Hair-or-Pants

I actually have a pirate/sailor post here! Though if you're doing a whole high seas themed part, I'll offer some extra ideas for creating multiple characters rather than just one!

-I think Part 7 would be the best part to reference for designs in terms of canon content. Cowboys and pirates just got similar vibes y'know, and whether your part is historical or modern, I think studying those designs will help you come up with a good way to mesh the JoJo aesthetic with the aesthetics and worldbuilding of your part.

-I forgot to mention this in the OG pirate post but netting! like fish nets, or just ropes in general.

-No joke: watch Our Flag Means Death if you haven't already, or if you don't have the time or have HBO Max, look for photos of the costumes in that show! The costuming in the show is just wacky enough that I think you could use it as a base and jojofy it pretty easily. Some examples:

So here's my Kuro Shinigamis x Miraculous Ladybug Au

I actually have a lot to say about this but imma just keep it short and snappy

The shinigami corp is now a superhero corp, training and dispatching miravulous holders instead of reapers. Depending on how good you did in training you'll get a stronger miraculous. Undertaker, the once in a generation prodigy, got the black cat but eventually grew bored of the monotonous work and deserted, taking the Miraculous with him. Only with Grell, next generation prodigy, they finally got another on his level and she earned the Ladybug. Dispatched to find and catch the stray cat her loyalty to the institute is challenged by Undertaker not only understanding her struggled but also being hot.

Kept Grell's silhouette for her outfit bc she's too iconic not to. Also her hair is shorter to see any of the design. Butler Grell is here bc i took the wispy hair from that design to stand in for bug like antenna. Yes she still has shark teeth i will rather die than take those away from her. Her mask is kinda in the shaoe of her glasses with two spots overstepping the shape to stand in for her cool skull beaded chain to hold said glasses. She has black eyes now, i swear i can explain . Instead of the chain she has at her hips that's where she parks her jojo weapon now

Translating my two fav reapers into ladybug and cat noir was so much easier than i thought bc it basically writes itself! Picture Undertaker swinging his baton real fast and with green action lines it looks like a scythe now, and the jojo in the show mostly spins for attacks anyways so that makes instant chainsaw vibe. And the summary up top you already read but can't you just imagine in their first confrontation like in black butler in book of the atlantic where Grell was confused about not cutting throigh Undertaker's weapon and he not so subtly tells her there's one thing a death scythe can't cut through? It can literally be the same conversation with the Miraculous Weapons!

Shinigamis in BB all have green eyes bc they're shinigamis but now they're superheroes so their eyes change colour to suit their miraculous if they're good enough. I also want the miraculous symbol to show up in their eye when they use their super power that's why both have an extra eye sketvhed next to them

Anime and manga artsyles I like and why

Brought to you by my smooth brain and the low quality images I stole off google yes I know this is bad but I wanna talk about this sO-

1 Jojo: of course I’m talking about jojos bizzare adventure how could I not. Aaight so first off, in the manga I really vibe with Arakis way of drawing really pretty dudes despite his characters being absolute units for the first 3 parts. I don’t like Dio as a person but dang he pretty. Josuke is my favorite jojo design wise just because he so soft looking or something. ThaT oNe drAwinG oF hiM wiTh gLoVes??? YOOOOO! Maybe it’s the eyelashes maybe it’s the poses idk but nice

I also really admire the outfits he makes and how he makes everyone look so weird but it works. Like where are these guys buying these dumb clothes. 3 people in Passione have chest windows or whatever and it looks niCe. Part 6 Jotaro and Johny have these weird pants that turn into shoes? There's just a lot of weird fashion that turns out looking cool to me .

Lastly I really like his sketchy doodle style. It looks really simple but idk something about it looks nice about how sketchy it is. Cool.

2 Demon Slayer: bruh I actually finished the manga like a week ago and this artist is so rad in how he draws eyes. You can tell who the character is just by them and a lot of them are really unique.

He’s also cool at designing characters. He makes the demons look cool whether they look human or mutated. My favorites would be Akaza, Doma, and the mother spider demon. All the pillars have unique designs and I love theM. I admire his artsyle and how simplistic and complicated it can be.

3 Hanako Kun: AAighT sO I do like the artsyle of this but the main thing I admire is how they color the manga. Its so warm and I really like it

I also like how ONE’s style can look so simple but still get the point across. It’s not as polished as other manga but I enjoy the look of it and it can make comedic moments funnier heehee

talkin bout fire force

shit boys it’s been too long time for another unprompted juvenile rant about manga, click keep reading if you’re insane and keep scrolling if you aren’t 

So Fire Force anime starts in just about a week and I decided to just read it all instead of waiting for any anime. It took a while to read all of it and now I just kind of have a lot to say about the manga, the anime, and the author. So here we go. 

I actually have a lot of good things to talk about, but I’ll get the bad shit out of the way first:

THE WRITING

idk his name it doesn’t really matter since he’s made like 2 things he’s just the soul eater guy; his art style has always been charming and the action scenes keep improving but his actual narrative writing is real bad. I’ll talk about the characters themselves since I actually think FF’s characters are a ridiculous improvement from soul eater, and the setting/aesthetic are on point as well but the plot is just as bad if not worse than whatever soul eater was.

The story is riddled with what should obviously be throwaway characters that keep being brought back and doing something evil and unexpected because it’s a shounen manga and if you aren’t being betrayed then the plot isn’t moving forward, or someone introduced as an obviously villainous character just kind of agrees to be friends in a couple chapters. This is used as a constant cycle of introducing both a set of “evil” and “good” characters, then one of the old “good” sets of characters does something evil and the newest “evil” guys turn out to be good. It’s not interesting or shocking to have a character you can’t even remember come back and act like they’re important, especially if it’s repeated over and over.

FF pretends to have some kind of politic overtones where religions and businesses and such act as their own entities and betray each other and prey on the civilians, but you see absolutely none of the impact anybody’s actions have on the world despite ridiculous things constantly happening and world shaking truths being brought to light over and over, nothing happens. Villains will also  have ridiculous unbeatable abilities but then just be ignored, such as making zombie apocalypses or controlling minds and such. This is also likely a concession of being a shounen manga, where you can’t expect readers to read every single chapter, and usually on a week to week basis, so every chapter needs to have its own big shit happening, even if there’s no plans to follow through on anything. 

The worst part about the writing is how much stuff that the reader didn’t know about and has no idea what it is is passed of as some shocking twist when it’s introduced. This mostly happens with powers and with new factions. There’s a ridiculous amount of times where a new group steps in as the bad guy like mentioned earlier. But for the powers, there’s so many things layered on top of an actually acceptable power system that just seem to cause a DBZ type of escalation of power without the fight scenes actually becoming that much crazier at all. On top of the simple 2nd/3rd generation fire fighter powers, the main character is meant to utilize the adolla burst, the adolla link, the preacher’s divine protection, the okay hand emoji that makes you go fast, the breath of life, and superfire fighting. None of that means anything to anyone and are just used as “MC needs to be better at something but only temporarily” over and over. It’s similar to Maka and Soul’s deals with the devil in soul eater except much more common and with absolutely no downsides.

Also not the fault of the writer himself but there is not ANY good translation of this manga out there holy shit. There’s so many incredibly obvious puns and connections and choices of words to be made that are just entirely ignored, the typesetting is always awful, and no name for moves, characters, or even the title are ever agreed upon. It took until the official release titled “Fire Force” before people stopped trying to call the manga “Burning Firefighter Squad of Fire”.

THE ANIME

Just a bit more bad to say before I go into all the shit about this manga i actually like. The anime looks awful. A lot of anime does right now, very little of note has been coming out or seems to be coming in the future, which is usually the case but its not getting better and that sucks! 

But specifically the fire force anime, following up after soul eater, has absolutely none of the visual charm translated from the manga to anime, the voice casting is absolutely abysmal, and there’s nothing to give me hope in it, not enough to even give it an episode most likely. People might try to defend David productions because woah man I love jojo!!! but they’re pretty fucking bad at animating anything. The choice of color is gross and the visual effects are bland, which is a bad place to start for a show that will contain tons of fire and other bombastic effects. Big shame.

OKAY ONTO THAT GOOD SHIT

CHARACTER DESIGN

The visual designs in soul eater were cool if a bit janky, and the actual concepts for characters were far from astounding, usually being able to fully describe characters in single words and not having much development outside of combat abilities. But Fire Force has some of the most tight characters I’ve seen in a while, they’re all simple and focused with strong thematic elements.

Ya’ll know me, hopefully. I really appreciate simple designs and simple characters. Complicated does not equal deep, and simple does not equal shallow. The characters in fire force will usually embody a concept, or a concept and its exact opposite, and be never waver from their design. I’ll talk about em for specific characters when I get to em but even lots of minor characters are very well focused and I appreciate it.

SHINRA

The main character, and while his grocery list of special abilities and “chosen one” kinda shit is annoying, he starts of as a very strong introspective of the weight of your actions vs the impression you give of in the eyes of society. The easiest way to describe it is through the very obvious identity struggle he goes through of wanting to be known as a “Hero” but instead being “The Devil”. All Shinra ever does is selflessly save peoples lives and put himself at extreme risk, he tells everyone and their grandma that they can call on him when they need a hero, and yet his visuals consist of a dark haired punk who constantly smiles a sharp toothy smile, his ability that he uses to fly in and do kamen rider kicks with spews fire from his feet in the shape of pointy wings, and this fire puts a heavy shadow over his face, giving him a monsterous siloutte. It’s not at all subtle that he just looks as evil and menacing as possible, and so his reputation is constantly negative no matter how kind he is. It’s not explored all that deeply but it is still a strong contrast.

ARTHUR

What a fucking idiot. What an absolute buffoon. This stupid fuck functions as a very simple gag character by being nearly too dumb to function and living in a made up reality as a fantasy knight, but is also able to exist as one of the strongest characters in combat. His ridiculous power is handled in a much more engaging way than Shinra’s. As instead of layering multiple chosen one abilities on him, he becomes weaker or stronger depending on his suspension of disbelief. The more in character as a powerful knight he becomes, the stronger he is. It’s a clean way to make a funny delusional characters struggle actually mean something to the people around them, instead of being left to his own devices or constantly told to fuck off. And while I said the plot isn’t very good, the smaller character beats can be very powerful. For example, It was already pretty easy to just accept Arthur as he was, but his family situation is explored late into the manga, and it’s shown that he began to live in fantasy to escape from his families arguments and poor living conditions. His parents take advantage of his disconnect and abandon their home with him in it, leaving all their responsibilities to him with a note saying he’s now the king and has inherited their castle. This pushes him to an even more absurd degree of fantasy in order to just live out his life knowing he was unloved and unwanted. It very understated how you can make a character that’s mostly used for jokes still be very easy to connect to and empathize. 

TAMAKI 

This one is likely to be the hottest take made from me here today, but this is the most interesting character in this series for a variety of reasons. 

Visuals out of the way, the fire fighter outfits everyone wears already look cool as shit and big puffy coats just get me goin, this girl absolutely rocks it on top of having twintails and a cute face. That’s not objective in anyway this is just a character designed to bait specifically me and its fucking working, okay? The writing is the actually interesting part.

So something that’s usually not even worth talking about is fan service. Show of a girls titties cus its what dudes in their teens want to see, its free (You)s for shounen manga, and soul eater was full of it. It was pretty bad in soul eater and could come at jarring and unneeded times for characters that didn’t seem to exist for any sexual reasons. It was a very poor way to include fan service. 

Fire Force also begins in a similar spot, the 3 main girls that are around in the beginning chapters are occasionally seen changing or in a bath or covered in water or whatever, with one particularly bad spread of them with the classic no nipple no vagina bodies all standing together in a shower. Its awkward and stiff and even as a fan of anime tiddie it just wasn’t worth having. 

But then that wildman just does it. He creates one single character to put literally every single ounce of horny energy in to. A character who exists to fall over and get her tits pushed into someones face, but pushed to a cartoonish extreme. It sounds silly to try to pass off fanservice as funny, but it is. It’s so ridiculously intended and impossible and always varied that its actually fun to see her do something stupid and for something to happen. Sometimes its just her ass landing on a dudes face (god i wish that were me) or her body being exposed and drawn in pretty high detail. Sometimes instead they get an entire dude stuck in her shirt after just tripping in a way that is not not being sexual to the reader at all since you see absolutely no skin. She’s simply destined to be put into lewd situations in universe, not in regards to the manga itself. For an example, here she is just standing completely still, and suddenly becoming naked, drawn in a distant, goofy way: 

It’s stupid. It’s definitely still fan service, but it’s just ridiculous. And that’s way more interesting than having every girl in your series randomly get naked at some point. Despite being insane it still works on boys, as Tamaki is the most popular girl in the series by far, ranked as the second most popular character consistently. 

Tamaki also leads to the single best chapter of the manga where a horribly designed throw-away assassin who was beaten by her returns for revenge, but just ends up as a short, self contained, well paced comedic story of love. 

And guess what, she’s still interesting outside of being funny and having fan service. Her cartoonish luck is essentially treated as her actual power, and her fire cat abilities aren’t explored too deeply during most of the series, but this is done for a greater purpose of essentially spitting in the face of high stakes. Tamaki easily witnesses the most deaths in the series, and most of them are cruel and unusual. She witnesses children being killed by a man who inspired her, she sees people she just met be beheaded in some gruesome shots that aren’t anywhere else in the series, and she gets involved in all sorts of life threatening situations. She still just falls over and gets naked. She’ll have fairly serious fights where she tries her hardest or the people around her are completely serious, and without bringing any direct attention to it she still ends up showing skin. There’s a point where every single character is at risk of dying at once to a trap set by the enemy, and Tamaki quietly laments over how she’ll be the only one to survive. She is completely aware of her ridiculous luck and her complete immunity to stakes, which is honestly just great.

Even beyond that, Tamaki is slowly being built up as more and more of an actual character, she has a short backstory section where her own hard work and effort is basically ignored by everyone around her, as if her success in life is only a result of her good luck, which is a feeling that hits very close to home to me (fuck you if you’ve ever discredited someones hard work because they’re “””””talented””””). And in the most recent couple of chapters, shes made an active effort to train alongside Shinra and Arthur, who both value the improvements they can make to themselves through hard work. No other characters in the cast make conscious efforts to improve from their status in the way Tamaki does. She moves up from a joke character to now trying to stand along side the main character as a useful and though out character. It’s a genuinely wonderful character to have been developed and the best thing I’ve gotten from this author.

VISUALS AND COMPOSITION

Okay enough about the characters, the last little thing I wanna touch on is just some of the absolutely bonkers kinds of compositions in this manga. One of the villains has an ability that is explained incredibly poorly. Pretty sure it’s just a time slowing ability that has nothing to do with fire but whatever. The pages where he uses the ability have this absolutely sick warped look to them that plays with the panels in a way that couldn’t be depicted in any other medium. Just look at this shit.

Every panel has a different background and yet still describes a single cut in time. It might not really mean anything, but that’s fucking sick dude.

Another pretty interesting one is this one kid named Nataku, who has an ability forced onto him by a maniac with a motif of stars for eyes, who dies immediately after. This event is shown to have absolutely traumatized him not because its directly said, but because this dead character appears constantly in panels with this kid, sometimes taking up the entire background to yell at him, or being an almost impossible to see spec lingering behind him. Nataku is also drawn in this strange sketchy style where he seems to be melting, and sometimes melds into shapes that resemble this dead character, such Nataku’s mouth becoming the fucking eyeball of the dead guy, star pupil and everything. It’s just such a specific and horrific way to depict that kind of identity trauma and it really stuck out to me.

I’LL SHUT UP NOW

And ye that’s about it. It was a lot of rambling and there are still lots of little things i like about the manga, good designs and cool fights and stuff but i just wanted to talk about the things that were really noteworthy to me. 

It’s been a long time since I’ve spent 4 hours just typing about stuff but if you actually read any of this, on this dead website of all places, you’re cool. Hope you found something interesting too.

My Actual Critical Thoughts on the DIU Movie, Unclouded By Gayautism Moments

Ok so I fucking loved it, and here's why. Spoilers for movie exclusive scenes.

First of all, I LOVED the look of the characters. I think the costume design was superb, ESPECIALLY Josuke. The modifications really made it feel like actual clothes someone would wear, but it managed to keep the Anime Bullshit vibes intact. The live media also added a lot to their outfits imo because of the way their clothes moved with them. It's a little thing, but animation rarely captures the way a bigass jacket flaps around. The casting was great imo. Josuke and Okuyasu actually looked like high schoolers (not sure if the actors were actually teens or what), and they looked... So Baby 🥺. Okuyasu especially... I loved him. My boy 🥺🥺🥺. And IDK if this is an unpopular opinion but I loved Jotaro!!! He looked like a dad and I appreciated it. I also liked the way they did his hat hair, like it was so funny. LOVED how his hat was tilted all weird like how it's always drawn. Loved the cartoony hair in general, actually.

Speaking of the Look, I loved the sets too!!! In the manga and anime the backgrounds were always kind of barren, and I get that Araki can't draw cluttered spaces every pannel, but it really did add a lot to the Higashikata and Nijimura households. Having all that background clutter really made the Higashikatas feel like a family to me. And, oh my god, the pictures Josuke drew as a kid 🥺🥺🥺. (While we were watching, my friend was like "he drew those like 2 weeks ago" and I lost it.) And UGH don't even get me STARTED on the catholic imagery in the Nijimura household. WHAT WAS THAT??? They made Okuyasu believe in God and I have no idea why but it fucking rules!!! Literally every shot of their house was like looking at a really fucked up Renaissance painting and it made me go crazy!!! MASSIVE fan of that.

Now the effects... I mean, for the most part they were pretty good. The Stands looked a little shaky at some points, but the cool shots and framing of their powers more than made up for it imo. Like the part where Josuke punches through those people at the store, and, like, they don't actually show CD at first was really cool. Speaking of not showing things, BAD CO'S INTRODUCTION WAS SO AWESOME. I LOVED it so much more in this. They did SUCH a good job really showing how gross and unpleasant the wounds caused by BC would be irl. It actually made me cringe a little, which is impressive, considering I rarely get grossed out by gore. AND!!! The fact that they used practical effects for Okuyasu's dad made me so happy!!! It looked pretty good and I expected it to be shitty cgi, so it was a real treat. CD and The Hand also looked pretty slick. I loved their textures... Which sounds weird, but it's true. CD had the whole faceted armor thing going on AND his flesh looked striated, which makes his otherwise kinda silly design SUPER cool (No offense, Mr. Diamond 😔). The Hand looked like a robot, which was so cool. He looked weathered, like his paint was chipping or something, which really added to his intimidating vibe. Overall, in terms of the anime adaptations I've seen, they did pretty damn good with the effects, and I think they really captured the feel of Stands as a whole.

But... The editing, unfortunately, took me out of it a few times. They had some REALLY great shots (CD's first instance of healing, Yukako's intro, really anything at the Nijimura household) but a lot of shots felt disconnected. Like motions got cut off, or you could tell it was a different take. It was kinda weird. I liked the OST when I noticed it, but nothing really stood out. The color grading was SUPER fucked in the first half of the movie, too. It looked very yellow, and I didn't like it, especially coming from a series as colorful as JoJo. There were also a few moments of overacting, but none of it was unbearable. Technically, it could use some work.

BUT. The plot was great. It was just a rehash of the Angelo and Nijimura arcs, but they pulled it off very well. They did a good job balancing the cuts with the additions. They replaced a lot of the inane JoJo bullshit with character development for the Higashikatas, which was galaxy brained fr. I actually Felt it when Josuke's grandpa died this time around. Josuke's relationship with his family in this version makes him a much more compelling protag. Not that he was bad before, he's my favorite JoJo so far, but he seems more driven now. His grandpa's death wasn't just forgotten about. And as for streamlining the story, spoilers but I was legitimately shocked when Sheer Heart Attack showed up at the end. I YELLED. I think that was a really good way to bridge to further in the story for a possible sequel, and it made Keicho's death more, for lack of a better word, Fuckt.

Speaking of, all the characters had really great spins this time. Josuke was like, a mama's boy who was trying and failing to be aloof, Koichi was more silly, Yukako seemed way more Unhinged, Okuyasu was like... an evil minion For Real (which I LOVED... He was very over the top Menacing at first), and Keicho was way more sympathetic. A lot of that last one was because of changed wording during his backstory section. His narrative was much clearer, and I actually sympathized with him this time around. His death also seemed more selfless because of the way SHA attacked them. Instead of just kinda knocking Okuyasu away, he ran across the room to push him out of the way. It makes the idea that he really did love Okuyasu deep down more believable. The little details really did add to the story, and it more than makes up for the stuff they cut out, which wasn't much in the first place.

All in all, it wasn't Technically a masterpiece, but I loved it and definitely recommend it if you're a fan of gay delinquents. Very fun, very epic, 8/10.

the scene where he goes to come out to his dad is so incredibly heartbreaking, especially when it cuts to him in rehab.

taron deserves an oscar just for throwing that chair alone.

“what have you got to do the get a fucking drink around here, eh?” and then he takes a swig from a bottle in the car with john

when he calls his mom to come out. that shit hurts.

“i just hope you realize you’re choosing a life of being alone forever...you’ll never be loved properly.” he opens his mouth. it’s so awful guys. and then he fucking gets punched by john what an absolute dick.

“real love’s hard to come by. so you find a way to cope without it.”

the scene that comes right after that when he’s getting ready for his show and snorts cocaine and takes a swig of a drink really shows how far off the deep end he had gone. it’s heartbreaking, really.

again, I could write an entire essay on this but the fact that he is literally hitting rock bottom with his childhood self down there is so impactful and powerful and one of the greatest artistic choices they made in this film. also the cinematography is gorgeous.

and oh, by the way, taron actually performed this underwater. no cgi or special effects. where is his oscar.

john is a dick to him on the stretcher but bernie looks so genuinely concerned for his friend and I love that.

it is absolutely gut wrenching when they pump his stomach.

THE CINEMATOGRAPHY AND ANGLES AND SILHOUETTES WHEN IT GETS TO THE BIG CHORUS PART IS SO SO SO INCREDIBLY GOOD AND AMAZING AND I WILL NEVER, EVER GET OVER IT.

the nurses getting him ready for what was probably his biggest/most iconic performance to date is something so incredible, and such a great choice cinematically, story wise, and really emotion wise too. he was at his absolute rock bottom and did one of if not the most iconic performance a little over 24hrs later, and I think this little part really helps to illustrate that.

taron actually hit that baseball and I’m so proud of him for it.

the liftoff is so great. and then it cuts to him in a plane with smoke on his head which just. ugh.

hot take: elton’s addiction wouldn’t have gotten so bad if he had just gone to bernie’s fucking ranch with him

they literally had separate rooms this was not a normal marriage. the breakfast scene is so sad though.

goodbye yellow brick road is such a beautiful song and scene and why didn’t we get Jamie to sing more I mean come on he does so incredibly well in this scene.

also I didn’t really realize that they flipped a few verses around for the movie. and elton yelling and screaming at bernie as he leaves is so powerful.

this is also when he has a heart attack?? chest infection?? I don’t really know but he falls down the stairs and Mr. Dick Manager John makes him continue to perform.

and there he is in the first scene’s costume. singing the rest of yellow brick road.

and there he goes. off to rehab. a full circle moment. good for him for finally taking control of his life and addictions.

“yeah but I started acting like a c*nt in 1975. I just forgot to stop.”

“maybe I should’ve tried to be more ordinary.” his grandmother walks in. “he was never ordinary.” my. heart. can. not. take. this.

this next scene where he talks to everyone in his mind is incredibly powerful and I will shout it from the rooftops until the end of time.

“my problem is that I believed you loved me. and you’re incapable of it.” the SHADE

“actually I think I’m okay with strange.”

BERNIE COMES IN MY LOVE

“bernie...I never told you how much I need you.” shit fam here comes the waterworks

“you just need to remember who you are. and be okay with it.”

and then his childhood self comes in. “I haven’t been reggie Dwight for years.” “when are you going to hug me.” he engulfs his young self in a hug. this is one of the best moments of the film and I am now full on crying.

I can’t get over how wholesome bernie’s visit is with Elton. the sweetest thing ever.

“you’re not scared you’re not good without it, you’re scared to feel again...this is the part you gotta do on your own. these...need music”

“thank you bernie.” “you’re my brother.” <3

and then he finally sits down to write again. and it’s pure magic.

I’m still standing is a a feat of what he’s been through the entire movie. finally, he’s sober, he’s accepting of himself/his sexuality, and is getting to a better place. plus, it mirrors the original music video, and is everything I’ve ever needed and more. *the* perfect scene and song to end upon.

he’s so happy at the end. and then the epilogue starts and says he’s been sober for 28 years and counting, set up an aids charity, still writes with bernie, met his husband David 25 years ago and is finally loved properly (rip my heart out of my chest, why don’t you), has two sons and is retiring from touring. and and the I’m gonna love me again plays with him and taron and it’s just such a perfect song to end, and I can’t.

so. those are my thought while watching rocketman for the 4th time in total, 2nd time this week. sorry that’s it’s so long. I just love this film so much. anyways, it’s almost 2am and I’m an emotional wreck. I’m gonna go cry and go to bed now. thanks for making it this far. :) <3
