Apologizing for her wasn’t really correct. If anything, it was more an apology for the hassle and inconvenience. “Okay, well the apology is for not really believing you the first time around.” That one also counted. Still, despite her best efforts to keep the mood light after that debacle, she couldn’t quite get past the disbelief and the shock of having ever defended a roommate like that. To have even fallen for an act like that, talk about gullible. “Yeah,” she breathed out in response. “I don’t want to believe it, but I..yeah I heard her. Kind of hard to deny. I just don’t understand why she was so angry at you.” His reassurance and smile did ease some of her nerves, and she gave him a smile in return, comforted by his soft touch. “Good, I’m glad. It’s not…none of it is true.” Did she know everything that was said between them? No, not exactly. But, she’d still assure it was inaccurate.

Still in her state of shock, but laurel listened to each word. His words swirled around her head as she tried making sense of it all. Demanding, marking her territory. It had also hit her in that moment, Juju’s feeling about her roommate had been right. It hadn’t really occurred to her that she’d taken her dad’s advice too literally. A balance was needed - between what her mom spewed often about not trusting anyone and the world sucks, versus her dad’s more optimistic outlook on life. “I hate that," she said, scrunching up her nose. "You don't deserve that mess," her words trailing off as she met his green eyes. Her train of thought was interrupted, as always mesmerized by him. The green eyes combo with his damp hair falling on his face was too distracting. "I'm...yeah I'm okay. My thoughts are all over the place still, but nothing crazy. You really think so?" Then, she thought back to her earlier realization. Clearly, her judge of character was a bit skewed at the moment. "Yeah, you're probably right. I hope that's not the case, but I'll be careful. Promise, as long as you'll be careful too. I can never say no to you walking me to class, as long as it doesn't keep you from your classes."

She hummed happily, leaning into his cheek kiss. How quickly she was falling, she could feel it. "Mhm, I think we should. Tempting to stay in bed, but I guess since I'm not hiding my whereabouts anymore, we could take the trip to the diner." Snow day, Chicago. His siblings. Was she wrong to read that as a good sign of their connection? The idea of meeting his family or going all the way to Chicago stunned her. Her heart was quick to react, heart rate accelerating at the thought. If her heartbeat could be translated, it'd be a resounding yes. Her mind just hadn't caught up to form the words. It took her a moment to catch up. "Wait, really? I haven't seen snow in a long while, I would love to. But, you're sure you want me to meet your siblings?"

Eli shook his head and sighed as he moved away from the door taking her with him. "Please don't apologize for her. You are the last person who should apologize for her. I know this is hard and believe me I didn't want you to have to find this out this way but really, a part of me is glad you saw how she really is. She plays up the innocent act. I don't think any amount of times telling you she said something would really make you believe. This was something she needed to show you." he shrugged and smiled. "Everything she says rolled off my back. I don't take her words to heart. If I did I wouldn't be here with you." His hand caressed her cheek sweeping the strand of wet hair away from her face.

"She uses you as a crutch. Even if you were at your dads, she still would have come over here and demanded to back off you. Regardless if you were here or not, she'd still want to mark her territory." As he looked into her eyes he had to ask, "are you okay?" Now that Jenny was on the other side of the door he was more focused on making sure Laurel was okay. He had dealt with Jenny for a while now that his words didn't really matter.

"I will say though that she won't stop here. What she'll do I have no idea but I want you to be careful. Maybe I can walk you to class?" The worry was more for her than him but truly he didn't have a great feeling with Jenny.

Nuzzling her face he kissed the side of her cheek and softly closed his eyes. "Did you still want to go get food? Or want to order in and stay in bed? Hey, if my siblings say yes, do you want to come to our snow day in Chicago?"

We all agree that next chapter comes out n MC must ask if the kid saw anyone opening the ark of covenant right? That they should be responsible adult and do something about it? Maybe look inside it just to make sure?

I heard a lot of theories about Minhyeok being like a fragment of God bc God wanted to always be near Solomon/Solomons descendants and stuff. Love the theory 100/100 kind of theory, love it.

But what they gonna do with the kid? Does the kid require devil energy? If not is there a substitute devils didn't know/didn't tell MC about? What if the kid is an angel in disguise? What if the kid doesn't understand devils language, or any beside Korean, so now MC needs to be translator for the kid? Sure devils can understand any language, but kid doesn't, so we should help him. I feel like they should go on shopping spree for kids clothing and stuff.

I just imagine a situation where they take the kid in until they figure out what to do and MC picks the kid up and just walks with him on their back. Kid is tired, if anyone in the party whines about it we should tell them off and to go pester Valefor for help. There's so many possibilities for cute dynamics and comedic situations!!!! Arghhh why the next chapter so far awayyyyyy.

Wait if the kid is Minhyeok how can we get human energy? Are we asking Minsyeok next? Find an alternative, that's for sure. What are the chances that when we see Solomon again, he just pops confetti at us with "Congrats on the kid!"? Pls it would be so funny. Grandpa is always happy seeing his grandkids no matter what generation.

The devils are fighting for MCs attention already, and then they see just some child getting all of it will probably feel like torture. But also consider! MC is a good(ish) parent to that random kid - means they'll be a good parent for the devils n their own kid. If we meet Asmo while this arc happening, H scene will be like 5 episodes, I'm sure of it.

MC humming a tune they heard from Mom Kim to the kid in the dead of night to lull him to sleep, bc nightmares with angels r horrible, n now they have to live with knowledge there's Foras humming the same tune when they're alone. I swear it feels like he's taunting us even tho he just thought it was cute. I just realized that Glasyabolas probably will tease the kid so much.

I'm sure Bimet might give the kid his phone, so he plays games while waiting for MC to be done with errands. Mini Minhyeok hiding behind Valefor every time he hears Glasyabolas or Orias coming closer awwwww. I think Barbatos probably knows how to make flower crowns and teaches him how to make it, too. Levi is conflicted, but he doesn't hang a child if he comes into his office without asking. Gamigin n kid playing tag before Gamigin trips over himself, getting laughed at, or worse, pitied by the child.

Omg the moment this thing is known all of hell is just "CHILD OF SOLOMON HAS A KID???" Oh, Lilith, the online forums about to come to life just to argue. MC gets phone call after phone call from devils they already met and a few more who just learned that. MC gets a headache, mini Minhyeok shows the drawing he was doing for the last 15 minutes while they were on a phone call and it's just him MC n maybe Solomon in the background with shitily spelt "grandpa" in korean. Cuteness aggression will kill me, I swear.

Imagine Orias attempting to draw shit like this to win a few affection points from MC n IT WORKS?? MC fawns over it and pets him on the head bc they think its cute no matter what he drew? Funnier if not and MC just stares at him like he's weird (he is). Still accept the drawing tho.

State of the Blog

Hey everyone! Thought I'd follow up with a short update regarding the state of Hetalian Historian right now:

News - Still being caught up on! For the past 2 weeks... there has been an absurd amount of new Hetalia stuff and a lot of them are significant. I'd imagine it's around 3-4 more posts I need to make, especially a continuation regarding my previous post. This is currently my top priority until I am all caught up.

Translation Masterlist - I had a couple of asks regarding the masterlist I've made, especially with the disappearance of part 2. This will be my next priority after I'm all caught up with the news, especially since it needs heavy revamping. I ended up deleting part 2 since at the time, Verusmayaii took down all their translations, so it ended up being a list of deadlinks. However, they have now resume translation! I'll have to recreate the new post and update part 1 as well with a couple of new links. Stay tuned!

Asks - There are still a couple of asks in my inboxes I have yet to answer, mainly regarding the deletion of part 2 of the masterlist. There is also one more ask I have been meaning to get to, in which if you're the person who sent in the ask about further context regarding the Buon San Valentino comic, I'll get to you! I've been asking some people around regarding the comic, and I'll be sure to follow up with an answer very soon. Apologies for the wait!

Future of Hetalian Historian - I've also mentioned within an ask that I planned to release a post regarding my recent inactivity and the future the blog, and that was meant to be released last week! My apologies once again for that. It seems to be I overestimated myself, my time, and my energy to make that post, so I'm changing the expectancy date TBD. Since I want to get everything up to date first, which is taking it's own time AND properly plan out the post through and clear enough regarding the changes in my life and what that means for the blog.

hey i hope it is cool if i add onto this post with some updated info! i have been collecting different (english) editions of the manga for 25 yrs and just wanted to chime in re: translation quality.

currently i have the first 90s/00s release by tokyopop/mixx (lower right, along with some individual comic issues not pictured), the second 2011 release (lower left) and the eternal edition (big bitches in the middle). of the 3, i feel like the translation quality is best in the eternal edition.

the first release, while extremely dear to my heart, suffers from a lot of the excessive americanization which was The Style At The Time. however, i would still put it a small step above the second edition in terms of flow/readability. i personally found the 2011 release to be extremely stilted, and either hyper-literal to the point of losing the plot or just outright wrong. (snowwolf did a great comparison between the 2011 translation and the eternal version here.)

the translation in the eternal edition hits right where it should, maintaining the integrity of the original while being much more readable than the 2011 release. as of right now (feb 2025) the eternal edition volumes run between $15-20 a pop, which is a lot if you're not a super fan. but i'm pretty sure the 2022 naoko takeuchi collection uses the same translation as eternal, and those hover around $12 ea, with the box sets being even less per volume.

but tbh if you're not sure you will like sailor moon, def look up a scanlation and give those a read first. i have not personally read any scanlations of it since like 2001, so i cannot attest to the quality, only the lack of price, lol.

(there's also a digital-only full color edition, currently unfinished and untranslated. the last release was in 2022, so no idea what the status of that is, but there might be some scanlations of it up somewhere!)

A short guide to the different editions of the Sailor Moon manga

As promised, now that I’ve reached the milestone of 200 readers, I’m posting a brief guide whose purpose is to help newcoming fans choose which edition of Naoko Takeuchi’s masterpiece is the best one to buy. Please keep in mind that this is not going to be a full-fledged review (especially since I happen to personally own a grand total of one of these editions and can’t therefore judge the others properly), but just an overview of what differentiates one edition from the others, which is ultimately the factor that is going to be the most determing in your future choice. Unless you choose to fuck the system and just download all of this material from the net.

So, without further ado, let’s start! Like 99,99% of manga, SM was published on a regular phonebook magazine before being compiled into collected volumes, so this initial incarnation of the manga is the one that must be considered first. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was serialized on Kodansha’s monthly title Nakayoshi between February 1992 and April 1997 for a grand total of sixty chapters (please don’t try to do the maths - I can already tell you that two single issues during this five-year period were skipped). On, the other hand, Codename Sailor V! was host by Nakayoshi’s companion magazine RunRun, which used to come out once every three months, between April 1991 and October 1996 on a much less regular basis; this series counts a total of sixteen chapters. We must also add that eight different short stories and one much longer extra chapter were also being contempourarely published between Nakayoshi, RunRun and the bimonthly issue Nakayoshi Deluxe, with a very irregular pace; finally, a tenth extra story was later published as a stand-alone well after the end of the manga. With all of this in mind, we’ve got a grand total of 85 back issues (and an artbook, but Parallel Sailor Moon is a wholly different story) to track down if we want to possess the original version of this amazing manga series. Good luck with that! Finding them these days is very rare, and finding them at a reasonable price is simply impossible (magazines are the cheapest way to read a manga while they’re still in circulation, but bless you if you want to find some older ones), so you must be a veeery dedicated collector to start the hunt. The good news is that the amazing people at Miss Dream have upped of all this goodness for download, and while it’s not the same as actually owning the issues, it’s still something - I mean, surely it’s enough to know how the manga originally looked like. Yes, because if there’s a good reason why you’d want to give this version a look, it’s because it features art that was never seen after - Takeuchi went through a lot of effort to polish her artwork upon the series’ volume release, which is why many panels and even entire pages from the Nakayoshi version will look vastly unfamiliar to you in you’re not used to seeing her rougher style! All in all, I think this is enough of a reason to, well, at least download the files and compare the pictures with what the manga would come to be later.

Shortly after it hit the shelves in phoneback form, the manga was compiled into a series of collected volumes which came out between 1993 and 1998. The original tankobon incarnation consists of 18 volumes for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and 3 volumes for Codename Sailor V!; the side stories were randomly thrown around inside the main books, though it should be noted that this edition lacks Parallel Sailor Moon, since it was first published in the Materials Collection artbook, which came out in 2002. These books are the same small size of every regular tankobon (or pocket-sized comic, for that matter) and each sports the standard 180 pages for volume, more or less; and, like all standard editions, they’re completely in black and white. Admittedly, you could say it wasn’t much of a loss, since all coloured illustrations that had appeared on Nakayoshi were also being compiled into a series of artbooks, but these did not include the coloured comic pages that were not pin-up art. This means that, for a long time, the original paperback serialization was the only way to get your hands on all the coloured parts of the manga - not to mention the fact that the Sailor Moon artbooks completely glossed over Sailor V, so that series was even less lucky than its more popular younger sister, and collectors were basically forced to buy RunRun in order to have all colour art ever made. What’s interesting about this edition, then? What makes it different from the others and therefore worth being bought (apart from lacking a single short story that is present in every subsequent edition, which isn’t arguably a great factor)? You could mention the cover art, for starters: every SM!volume featured four new colour illustrations that Nakayoshi-only readers would’ve missed - one on the front, one on the back and one for each side of the flier sides - while the SV!volumes only featured new stuff for the cover and just recycled art for the other parts; it should also be mentioned that every SM!volume came bundled with a double-sided poster in full colour, but they all featured already-seen art from the chapter pin-ups that were also present inside the books, though in b/w. But, truth to be said, you can still own all these pieces of art without possessing the original tankobon edition, since they are all featured in the artbooks - and in a much bigger and cleaner format, to boot! Though sadly this applies to Sailor Moon but not to Sailor V, as usual. No, the reason why you really want to check this edition out is inside the books: first of all, the first page usually features some tankobon-exclusive b/w art (which means that it was born in b/w and not converted from a coloured source to a b/w print) which, by virtue of being b/w, was totally absent from the artbooks. You’ll also be treated with Takeuchi’s liner notes wich were then suppressed from later editions (this tankobon-exclusive feature took the space that was devoted to sports and commercials in the Nakayoshi version)! And, aside from the illustrations, the greatest difference is actually the artwork in the manga pages themselves: as I’ve mentioned, almost every page was retouched to varying degrees when transitioning to phoneback publication to book release, and sometimes full pages were even added! In the end, what makes this edition unique is that it features an incredible quantity of panels that would be later redrawn (again!) for the next release, which is why I think it’s very important to at least give a glance to the original tankobon’s scans. Oh, I should also note that the division of the story into chapters was vastly rearranged for this version: comparing this arrangement to the way chapters were actually published singularly in Nakayoshi, Sailor Moon went from 60 to 49 chapters, while Sailor V went from 16 to 15. * But well, this is more of a formal difference, since none of the content from the magazine edition was eliminated - it was either altered or added, but never cancelled. As a final note, though the tankobon edition is out of print, it’s still relatively easy to find copies at a reasonable price, so it’s not as impossible a mission as hunting for the original magazine release is.

*= The issue of splitting Sailor V into chapters is a huge problem by itself, since the series actually started as a one-shot which we are now used to calling Chapter 3. The fact is, chapters 3-4-5 were the first to be published on RunRun as a sort of experiment and, once their popularity reached a certain degree, Takeuchi went back and gave birth to chapters 1-2 to explain the origins of the heroine in a sort of prequel fashion. But after that chapters 6 to 16 were all released in subsequent order, though skipping some issues of RunRun to make space for Sailor Moon side stories. Just know that all book editions of the manga arrange its chapters following the logical (but not chronological) order in order to give the story some actual sense. I think George Lucas is proud of Naoko Takeuchi.

Now we come to the most well-known edition (and the only one I actually own): the shinsoban release was published between 2003 and 2004 and consists of 12 volumes for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, 2 volumes for Codename Sailor V! and 2 bonus volumes for the so-called Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Short Stories, which were grouped separatedly from the main series and included Parallel Sailor Moon for the first time. Even though the size of the books is about the same as the previous edition, they’re all quite thicker - each of them sports about 240 pages, more or less. And the first six are in full colour! Continuing on with the technical side of things, the shinsoban edition restored the original division into chapters from Nakayoshi and RunRun, but kept the tankobon rearrangment of the Sailor V reading order; in the end, the shinsoban way has become the official division and order for the manga, and the basis for every subsequent rerelases and adaptations. But what sets this edition apart from the others? First of all, the new coloured illustrations: every SM!volume (including the extra ones) features three new pieces of art - one for the cover, one for the back and one for the summary page; regarding Sailor V, this is limited to a single new illustrations per volume (the cover one) coupled with some recycled art. As an added bonus, all SM!volumes (so including the two extra ones, but excluding the two SV! ones) came with a page of stickers mostly featuring even more new coloured pieces by Takeuchi. And, this time around, there are no artbooks to have collected these artworks, so buying the books is essentially the only way you’ve got to be able to stare endlessly at all this awesome art. Speaking of the art, yet again a huge number of panels was redrawn in Takeuchi’s new style, and particulars were added to the Warriors’ uniforms which were present in their original design but had been scrapped before the manga hit serialization. This was the last time this was done, which means that a) the shinsoban has become the definitive version of how the manga looks like and b) there’s a total of three versions of the manga which differ from one another regarding the artstyle, and these are the Nakayoshi, tankobon and shinsoban versions. And the last is the best looking one, according to my very qualified judgement. It should also be noted that, in this edition, the tankobon liner notes were suppressed (their place was reassigned to some recycled b/w chibi art), but short two-pages comics about the making of the manga were added; and while the first change was kept in later editions, the omake content is exclusive to the shinsoban. The conclusion is the following: since the shinsoban edition is still being reprinted on a regular basis, it’s very easy to buy it first-hand, and to a reasonable price to boot - by virtue of being a deluxe edition, they’re slightly less expensive than your regular tankobon issue, but the difference in price is minimal and, since there are less books to buy, it even comes off as cheaper in the end; not to count that, even considering a single volume, the quality of this version is still much superior.

Then there’s the kanzenban edition, which was published between 2013 and 2014 and consisted of 10 volumes for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and 2 volumes for Codename Sailor V!; as stated above, the division into chapters followed the shinsoban, but the side stories were once again reinserted in between the regular series instead of being distinctly separated. Now, unlike with previous releases, the kanzenban does not feature any sort of update on the artwork, which means that the shinsoban is still the definitive version of the manga. But of course there is something to differentiate this editions from all the others! First of all, there’s the new art: every SM!volume presents a brand-new coloured illustration that, once again, is not available anywhere else due to up-to-date artbooks not existing. Unfortunately, this implies that there is nothing new aside from these ten illustrations, since the back and side cover sport no art at all and the SV!volumes, poor Mina, use recycled art even for the covers. That being said, the main selling point of the kanzenban is the fact that it’s the only edition to feature all the colour pages of the manga: this is relevant even for artbook-owners since the kanzenban is virtually the only source to include the coloured pages from the manga that are not cover pin-ups and the coloured illustrations and manga pages for Sailor V, all of which are very much absent from the artbooks. This makes the kanzenban a sort of must-own for everyone who’s obsessed with Takeuchi’s art, and you can stay assured that I’m going to spend everything I’ve got on this edition as soon as an Italian translation is published. The kanzenban volumes do not come with any bonus material, but they make up for it with their incredible size which makes them the best medium to ogle at Takeuchi’s art properly without the need to use a magnifying glass (…I’m not the only one who does it, am I?) - for comparison’s sake, the books are only slightly smaller than Nakayoshi issues, but the paper and ink quality is on a wholly different level! Every SM!volume is very thick, counting about 300 pages each, while the SV!volumes are not different from their shinsoban counterparts in that regard - they’re just bigger and more coloured. Of course this comes with a negative side: this edition, being more deluxe than a deluxe version (keep in mind that the shinsoban was deluxe indeed), is very very expensive. With this I mean that each volume costs about 2,5 times the price of your standard all b/w tankobon that you can find at the newspaper seller. This is to say that, if you’re not a super hardcore fan like me, you can very well go for the shinsoban.

The good news for anyone who can’t afford any of these editions is that a bunkoban release has been officially announced to be due to be published between 2018 and 2019. Information about this version is still very scarce, though, so we don’t know how many volumes it will comprehend - hell, we don’t even know if this edition will include Sailor V at all! With this in mind, I can only tell you what I know about bunko in general, based on the ones I own: the great thing is that each volume is about 500 pages long and very cheap, but there’s a reason to this. Bunkoban books are in complete b/w and, perhaps more importantly, are positively minuscule, to the point that reading can be even made difficult by their small size. My personal advice is to buy bunko only if you absolutely have to. Oh, I should also mention the fact that this edition is not going to feature any new art, since the covers will recycle the same illustrations used for the first kanzenban volumes, as photos from the official site have revealed. Anyway, I promise to update this mini-guide with more info as soon as the bunkoban edition is actually released!

So, to put it short, my suggestion is: hunting down the Nakayoshi edition is a task for hardcore collectors only; at this day and age, the original tankobon version is outdated, but it still holds interest to a dedicated fan; the shinsoban edition is the default one to go for new readers and probably the best way to enoy the story; the kanzenban edition is only for very, very big fans; the bunkoban edition will irreparably destroy your eyesight. In the end, I think the most difficult choice is between shinsoban and kanzenban, and that is a decision you have to make thinking of what you value more between the story and the art. If you really can’t make your mind up, keep in mind that it’s not illegal to buy both! Still, never forget that the more buyer-friendly is the shinsoban. According to the fan and the official English translations, Elias never called Chise a child in the manga (here's a good post from blue-inspiration-blog about that too).

Was the line changed to compensate for this panel that didn't fit in the anime? Or did the creators actually want Elias to call Chise a child?

Books of 2025: ADRIFT IN CURRENTS CLEAN AND CLEAR by Seanan McGuire.

Ah, yes, my favorite January tradition: heartbreak in tiny series installment form :)

This one is about a turtle-obsessed disabled Russian girl who gets adopted by an American family and fitted for a prosthetic she doesn't ask for, want, or need, and then she splashes through her Door.

I love Russian language and culture things (shout out to accidentally double minoring in college), so I was excited for a Russian protag and a Russian-coded Door world! Excellent enrichment in my enclosure. Neat cultural expansion on the Wayward Children universe (multiverse? cosmos?? insert appropriately scaled setting word here).

I also liked the aquatic nature of Belyyreka--terrifying giant frogs and delightful giant turtles and delightful talking foxes on the riverbanks were all lovely, and the worldbuilding about different weights of water was neat! Very mind-bendy kind of setting, I dig it.

This installment felt very slim (146 pages in my copy), and Our World Heavy--the first 46 pages were in Colorado, and the last 100 were in Belyyreka, but it felt like we did More Frequent and Larger Time Skips in Belyyreka compared to Earth? Kind of speedrun mode, sans Quests, really (this one was a lot more oriented toward Finding/Building Your Family, which was signposted pretty clearly upon our arrival in Belyyreka). Mostly a quieter installment up until the, y'know, Typical Impending Tragedy of Return at the end. (Did I almost put it down at 1AM last night with 30 pages left so everyone could Be Happy? perHAPS,)

Overall: I had a good time! But, ow, my heart (once again and forever).

Repeating "characters are tools" you end up erasing so much about arashi's character and motivations and interactions with other characters if you avoid using her pronouns aka avoid showing she's transgender. It's on the same level of frustration with the translators i had when i saw they had Mika speaking standard English, there's a LOT that gets lost if you don't show those little things.

All and all: excellent manga, overall very good final act, too rushed final 2-3 chapters but weak and honestly mediocre epilogue, which makes the high of the ending kind of leave a bitter taste. I think Noda had a good steed and suddenly he had to finish and had to rush all. So the ending in the sense of the final arc was good but the ending proper (final couple chapters) + epilogue......... Not so much

It might be September by now, but the sun’s rays know no bounds.

Heat from the weather aside, the schoolhouse on the coattails of summer break is permeated with the fervor of the students.

Among all those in the athletic clubs who have undergone away games and training camps, there are many who have deepened both their tans and their virility. The sense of achievement characteristic of those who kept up with their exercise lives within their growth spurts.

Hirano’s roommate is, once again, one of them.

Kagiura, who’s gotten a bit taller, has gotten used to high school, completely devoid of the anxiety he’d seemed to have around the time he’d started school.

Since they’d met up over the summer, he’s become more and more relaxed, and Hirano can’t help but think of him as a beloved younger brother.

Wait, but younger brothers don’t do things like give you earrings, do they?

Hirano isn’t really in a position to judge, with no siblings of his own.

He’d found his original earrings while organizing his luggage after returning from Kagiura’s countryside home. They’d fallen into his school bag and hidden themselves beneath the stiff bottom plate.

What should I do about it? he’d wondered, but figured well, whatever, and didn’t bother switching out his new ones. He’ll keep them in the dorm just in case, but ultimately plans to keep using the ones Kagiura gave him.

As soon as the new term starts, preparations for the Cultural Festival are full speed ahead. Even the first years, who aren’t used to running events without the guidance of a faculty member, are gradually gaining opportunities to build character. The Executive Committee members have so many responsibilities that it has become difficult to carry out their studies without the cooperation of their classmates.

Kagiura also has the situation of being part of the ‘Sports Recommendation Squad’, and his grades are not up to snuff. It would be good if they don’t take a hit from his extracurricular responsibilities, but that will come down to his own efforts.

It’s not just the Executive Committee members who are swamped. The students in the culture clubs are also at their busiest, and with the autumn tournament right around the corner, there’s no way the athletics clubs can cut back on practices.

The sweltering nights have yet to abate; yet despite these conditions which could even be called cruel, most of the students are eagerly awaiting the Cultural Festival. You might even get away with saying all of them.

Because, after all, girls come to visit the cultural festival. 

And even without that element, a festival is still a festival. 

This is a time when the whole student body is restless, so the Disciplinary Committee will be on top of keeping everyone in line—or such is their public stance, but they won’t be too strict about moderating uniforms and hair styles.

In any case, a high proportion of the students will be in costumes on the day of the festival. 

There's also at least one class cross-dressing every year. 

This year, that’s right, it's the class that Hirano is unfortunately a part of. More specifically, it's been decided that Hirano will be one of the ones in drag. 

Oiwa-san—a famous spirit who makes an appearance in the Yotsuya Kaidan.¹

There are many variations of the famous ghost story, in which Oiwa, the deceased wife, holding a grudge over the betrayal of her husband, Iemon, slaughters every last person involved. Apparently, they will be basing the makeup off of Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan², which is popular among Hirano’s classmates.

He’d been shown reference images of the ghost, her face half disfigured and inflamed by poison, but the picture was nightmare fuel when viewed in the dark.

Supposedly it’s a style of Halloween makeup that’s been popular in recent years, but the trial makeup that had been applied to his arm after school in order to match the shade to his face had been truly grotesque.

This information is to be kept top secret until the last possible minute on the day of, in the interests of building hype.

While Hirano is putting away his homework, the door opens with a click.

His roommate is home.

It’s still bright outside, but the dining hall is just about to open for dinner.

“Hirano-san, I’m home!”

“Welcome home, Kagi-kun.”

These days, Kagiura usually gets a bit bashful in reply to Hirano’s greeting, seemingly tickled. So naive and innocent he must be, making such an expression with no fear of being misunderstood.

There were days they’d spent together, but summer vacation had been long.

There’s an air of a different kind of newness from the one there’d been in the period before they’d gotten used to sharing a dorm—Kagiura probably feels it too. At least, Hirano thinks so.

He feels closer to Kagiura compared to before. After all, he’s met his immediate and extended family, so of course they’d feel more intimate. It’s as if the part of himself that had been on guard while thinking about how to act as a senpai in his second year in the dorms has been absolved.

After Hirano had filled out his print-outs as if in competition with Kagiura, who’d spread out his homework in a frenzy, they’d headed to the dining hall a little later than usual.

It always takes him about 3 or 4 days to get back into the swing of dorm life.

Speaking of which, he thinks.

Before Kagiura moved into the dorms, Hirano had been quite nervous.

He’d talked to Hanzawa about it one time when the Disciplinary Committee had a meeting, and they’d brainstormed strategies to avoid scaring Kagiura off.

He’d also felt it would be a waste of his efforts if he was only friendly at the beginning of their time spent living together; thus, they’d come to the conclusion that it wouldn’t be too far out of Hirano’s depths to give him a nickname and use “-kun”.

Oh yeah, that’s right. At the beginning I called him Kagiura-kun.

He’s been calling his name every day, enough that he’d ended up shortening it, thinking it’s too long and clunky.

Kagiura has morning practice tomorrow, too, so there's no way he can let him oversleep.

Hirano got that, but there was something on his mind that just wouldn’t go away, so he asked before shutting off the lights. 

".....Hey, um. I know you're working hard, so I don't wanna rain on your parade, but are your studies going all right? I haven't heard how your proficiency test went yet."

As the words leave his mouth, he thinks, what am I, a private tutor? and laughs drily to himself.

For the results of the test held right after summer break, a list ranking every student in their grade and the standard score were passed out to each person, the same as for the periodic exams.

For first years, they can be used as nothing more than a reference, but due to the breadth of the material covered, in some cases they might be used to determine which schools to apply to when compared to results from previous cram schools.

“...I just barely passed.”

“What’s the damage?”

“The teacher said, ‘You didn’t do badly enough that I need to pull you aside, but keep working hard’...”

“I see.”

Which is bad in and of itself, really.

Kagiura hangs his head dejectedly, and Hirano’s tempted to comfort him all the more for having seen the extent of his efforts, but his lack of preparation is unmistakable.

“Kagi-kun, after the cultural festival is over, you gotta step it up. If you miss some of the notes, get someone to show you theirs before the next day. Don’t let them build up. If you end up with a backlog of notes to take, you’re not gonna be able to understand them.”

Hirano knows deep down he’s probably worrying too much, but he keeps the expression on his face stern. The beginning is the key to everything. Among his classmates in the ‘Sports Recommendation Squad’ who, like Kagiura, are bad students, there are many whose grades plummeted after going on to their second year.

Who knew he’d become this much of a worrywort after becoming someone’s senpai?

“Yeah…Hirano-san, will you teach me again?”

“Sure. But you better bring back good grades.”

“I will! …By the way, can I ask you something?”

He ducks his head as he asks the question, a gesture with all the charm one would expect from someone as cute as him.

“What’s up?”

“When you were a first year, did the senpai you roomed with teach you how to study, too?”

“Nah, no way.”

“Hm…did you not get along?”

“It’s not that we didn’t get along, we just weren’t really that close. I wasn’t nearly as friendly a kouhai as you are.”

This is usually the case for dorm students. Hanzawa, contemptuous of homosexual relations, has a reputation in certain circles for having a finely-tuned gaydar and showing up to cockblock any time he senses anyone getting a little too close.³

His distaste isn’t unwarranted; apparently it has to do with his family, so even Hirano feels bad for him.

“...Does that make me special, then?”

“Why are you so happy about that?”

At Hirano’s jests of what are you, a dog? Kagiura breaks into a grin.

“Yeah. You know, I’m glad I’m your roommate, Hirano-san.”

Hirano smiles wryly; Kagiura’s got him wrapped around his little finger without a hint of insincerity.

With Kagiura cozying up to him like this, he doesn’t stand a chance.
