This is an interesting question, cause it’s not asking about dislikes... hm I’d say I don’t get shipping Geralt/Triss, like..... she’s clearly not what he wants at all and literally uses him while he has amnesia like bro, that’s a hard wtf from me. I also don’t really get Geralt/Dettlaff but like, eh

20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?

Hoooo boy this is a hard one... I’m going to say Geralt/Regis, seconded closely by Geralt/Eskel. Geralt and Regis have a really sweet friendship and mutual trust between them already, which is a great foundation for a pure and loving relationship imo. I also thing a similar trust and friendship exists between Geralt and Eskel, so same concept, but there’s just something about Geralt/Regis that feels very sweet and pure to me.

22. Popular character you hate?

I did have to think for a moment and then it dawned on me: Triss. She’s not a good character imo (I blame the author and the games for writing her like that but she still sucks) like, the whole taking advantage of Geralt while he has amnesia thing and the kinda constantly throwing herself at him thing just gives me a really nasty gut feeling

a) Letho of Gulet

I adore him :0 He was my first witcher love, he’s enormous (his biceps????) and scary and quiet but also crafty and super intelligent and 10/10 would want to be swept off my feet by him

b) Sigismund Dijkstra

I have grown to adore this man relatively recently, partly because I started reading the books and found out that he’s almost 7ft tall and lorge and that was it for my little old heart XD he could step on me and I’d probably thank him anyway he’s also enormous and scary and also super crafty and intelligent (haha no there’s no pattern here) and I just generally think he’s vastly under appreciated

c) Gaunter O’Dimm

This is also a fairly new appreciation but I clearly like strong, crafty, intelligent characters, and while Gaunter isn’t particularly beefy he’s magic so that’s close enough. He’s awesome and a little creepy and just generally has a fun spooky vibe, definitely lots of fun potential for more content exploration imo

My thirst aside, all of the above characters are really interesting and nuanced individuals who I think deserve more love and attention <3

Story: Harbourside Station (aka my Witcher Firehouse AU, bitches on fire)

AN: It was so hard to pick a scene, but I went with the first scene of the first chapter so there is little to no spoilers. Also I did say I don't want drama. But here I go. Gotta start with a bang. ,

Chills ran down Eskel’s back when he heard class break, turned his head and watched how the entire row of windows under the roof of a warehouse in the harbour district broke, one by one in quick succession.

"Danger. Everyone clear the building. Now." He let go of the radio, knowing full well that the two men where were currently inside would not make it out in time. It went fast, the fire drew in air from outside and then all the unburned gasses ignited in a backdraft. Think, dark smoke rose.

Backdrafts were fast and could get up to 850 °C — temperatures, not even the best bunker gear can protect you from — the only relative safe spot is on the floor because the heat always rises to the top.

Eskel turned to Renfri and Geralt who were standing by as assigned emergency team. “Get inside, take the bag with you. Follow their line, be careful... if it gets too hot, withdraw.”

Eskel clung to his radio, eyed the burning building, hoping to hear anything from Letho or Findt. He hoped they were alright, but the chances both of them were unhurt were slim. He heard the noises of the fire, the humming of the trucks and pumps. But silence on the radio.

"Mayday, mayday, mayday." It was Findt's voice on the direct-mode channel. He was breathing heavily but his voice was calm. A short moment of silence followed.

"This is Noviegrad 1 23/3-RD. We are on the ground floor, about ten meters south of the entrance and five meters east of the outer wall. My comrade is down, he doesn't respond. I cannot get to him. I'm trapped with my right leg beneath a heavy-duty shelf and all of its contents. My mask broke, I'm drawing in some smoke when I inhale. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday."

In the background the pre-alarm of a PASS-devices, probably Letho's, was audible.

“Heard you loud and clear. What is your pressure?” Eskel gestured Aiden and Coen and Lambert to come over.

"Take stabilising material and a high-pressure air cushion from the AFT," he said to the three. "And a spine board. Be careful and follow the hose line."

“I'm at 150 bar and dropping fast,” Findt said via the radio.

Eskel grabbed his radio again. "Stay calm, do not try to free your leg. Seal your mask with your hand if possible. Use the tactical breathing technique. Help is already on the way."

"Understood.” Letho’s PASS was audible in the background. Findt had moved to silence his so he was easier to be understood.

“Just hang in there, and stay calm. Over.”

Silence on the radio. Eskel could not help but feel tense. He signalled both the ambulances 4 and 2 to get ready.

ok i FULLY confess I haven’t played W1 yet, i decided to do W2 first because uhhh idk. I thought maybe W2 might be mechanically easier to get into than W1?? This might have been completely unfounded, lmao, anything more complex than slash and dodge is ridiculously unintuitive to work out and atm i’m just like. stopped right before the kayran fight because it’s going to require me to implement more complex tactics than “hack at it until it goes away” and I Do Not Want To.

honestly it’s a major tone shift from W3 as well and it’s. hm. it’s something, is what it is. in THEORY i don’t mind it being more grimdark and politicky? in practice it’s kind of exhausting to play through, it all feels...grimy. i was hoping i could get to the turning point pretty quickly and that getting to spend time with the Scoia’tael would help clear the air for me, but idk! how far did you actually get into either route before giving up?

also, YEAH, I don’t feel sorry at all for Foltest (or even particularly Demavend, but like fuck Foltest in particular!) imo, Letho’s done enough for geralt re: yennefer and the wild hunt that I certainly wouldn’t kill him over Foltest. the TTRPG canon that the Viper keep was destroyed and the vipers banned from even entering Nilfgaardian cities makes Letho vastly more sympathetic as well, like, ethics of restarting a witcher school aside, dude went from being in prison to promised he and his brothers could have a home again and all he had to do was kill a bunch of objectively pretty shitty guys. i ain’t mad about it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

NORTHERN WARS + SCOIA’TAEL VERDICT

I wanted to talk a little bit about the verdict on the VRIHEDD BRIGADE and Iorveth’s escape from the event. Since I finally got around to finishing all the books last year before I came back to the ‘States, I feel I am comfortable enough now to elaborate more on Iorveth’s background and his experience as a former Vrihedd brigade officer to the events that led down his path of becoming a rebel leader/terrorist to humans.

I actually got snippets from the chapters to share too with those who are curious to know about the elven losses at the end of the war ( since I will be excerpting bits on other elves / characters who played a part).

First I wanna talk excitedly about Iorveth getting a name drop in the books!!!!

He’s mentioned in Baptism of Fire when an elf of his commando writes on his cell in Drakenborg (Dragon City). That was SO COOL! The circumstance of the mention? Absolutely sad. Drakenborg is the name of an infamously brutal nonhuman interment/death camp in Redania brought up repeatedly throughout the books as the war rages on. Previously I wrote about Iorveth’s eye and how it came to be gouged out after the events of the Thanedd Coup. Well, this was the time between 1267-1268 where Iorveth had been seized during the coup and taken to Drakenborg with his commando. Of course, Iorveth did not make it all the way to the death camp when the guards tore out his eye. He later escaped with the help of a mysterious DRAGON which attacked the party on the road, letting Iorveth and his men escape free--of course, not all kept up and were recaptured and taken back towards their fate at the Drakenborg noose. Shit’s fucked :c It only get sadder from here on out.

June of 1268, the second Northern War ends and concludes with the Peace of Cintra. Below are some key excerpts concerning scoia’tael who served Nilfgaardian Empire during the war, upon being promised Dol Blathanna. Dol Blathanna is a historically elven valley that the elven sorceress Francesca Findabair was promised to rule as an Elven kingdom in recompense for aen seidhe guerilla units under the “Vrihedd brigade” (later called Squirrels by men of the North) storming the Northern Kingdoms so the northern realm could not uphold a strong defense from the Empire’s legions when Nilfgaard invaded.

However, unknowingly to these brave elves who went to fight the war, it was decided by Francesca and Emperor Emhyr that the only way the Northern Kingdoms would allow Dol Blathanna to exist and to compensate for large losses of civilians and artillery, was for them to denounce Vrihedd/scoia’tael as WAR CRIMINALS. Thus we have all the mentions of scoia’tael through out the games becoming these wild bands of elves who recruit other nonhumans and starts massacring even further through the Northern kingdoms in retaliation and because they are starving, fleeing from being hung or murdered. They take revenge on humans for fooling them again, and become disenchanted with the Kingdom of Elves ( Dol Blathanna) and its ruler, believing them to be tools to the humans and soon to lose their strip of land again. I know Iorveth believes this strongly when Geralt meets him, and is extremely bitter when spoken to about Francesca Findabair.

It mentions only 32 Scoia’tael officers were to go on trial but we know for a fact by Geralt’s POV and Iorveth’s word that at least 53 actually were meant to die. Iorveth never showed up to Cintra, he heard instead the decree when the news trickled down the ranks and outside of Cintra. That was the CATALYST to him recruiting more scoia’tael and eventually even helping Letho to assassinate the human kings of the North who had taken part in this murder of elves who, from Iorveth’s point of view, had been following orders to protect their freedom. You can see the sentiment of that in the other elves above. I really put emphasis on that last two dialogues too, where the elven leaders become grim and silent upon realizing the other side of the scale if they hadn’t handed themselves over instead of thousands of YOUNG and innocent elves who had helped them. They had already faced a great massacre in their time ( Shaerrawed Massacre ), they wanted to prevent that even if they still were getting the shit end of the stick.

Idk, I find this whole chapter extremely interesting in the context of Iorveth’s past as a leader of the Vrihedd brigade, as someone who fought in the Northern Wars with humans and against, and it really makes sense why he’s embittered and hateful of humans and why his work in Vergen and later friendship with Geralt at the end of Witcher 2 is a HUGE step forward for him! Something definitely to explore on this blog.

Anyway, that’s all I got for now. But bc I love Isengrim and also find this whole part of the book fucking TRAGIC, I’ll post below the last little screenshots I saved of the aftermath, AKA: the brutality some elves faced when marched to Drakenborg. Will I ever stop cryin about these elves? Nope,,,

15. Is there a certain person in this world that they cannot stand? The very mention of this person’s name makes them tremble with anger or fear.

All the people that she did hate are mostly gone it wasn’t till later that she learned to hate another person again even with all the contempt she got from others. Her father was one of those that though he might have given her life she could not stand the man and even now his anger still bleeds in the hearts of those in their hometown. However, after his death, she didn’t have much to fear of him. A dead man can’t hurt anyone after all. She can’t go back there without being run out but she simply stays away.

If there’s one person she’ll never forgive it’s Sile of The Lodge and Kingslayer/Lethos. Due to Sile and her dealing, Maria will spend the rest of her life pushing other sorceresses’ away and even puts her previous ‘teacher’ Triss at arm’s length. She’ll deal with them but if it comes down to words about either of them her anger rages like the strongest fire on a dry field in summer. It takes a lot to calm her down which is bewildering given how soft and forgiving the women is. One would never think she could hate another person with such passion but due to them Temaria suffered and they destroyed a legacy that didn’t need to be tampered with. 

33. If your character wanted to be alone, where would they go?

Maria never really has a lot of options, being a knight she’s too hold herself together and give face no matter what. It’s hard though when you’re a high ranked knight but you’re only seen as the ‘witch’ you can’t help to be. She’ll try to escape to the churches and tucked away gardens if at all possible. Someplace quiet and beautiful where she can just reflect. 

41. Does your character’s family affect your character in any way?

It’s an understatement on how much Seigfried has influenced Maria’s life most of which is for the good being that he’s the only one that looks out for her. Maria also doesn’t have anyone that looks out for her that’s full of good intentions. Even though The Order looks down on Nonhumans they at least look at Maria as there first to ‘repent’ and for the most part, it’s successful. She’s mostly reformed due to them and would fallow her brother into the greatest of battles just to keep him proud of her. The only time she’s ever really thought about her own future/ made her own choice is when she leaves after the events of Loc Muinne due to being with child. 

45. Is your character the kind to hide their true emotions or do they wear their heart on their sleeve?

Hide. Being part of The Order she can’t voice a lot of her opinions do to them being ‘blasfamy ’ and not in agreement with the church’s teachings. She’ll do her best to protect those that need it and voice against something that seems completely unbeneficial and pointless but she usually goes ignored. Braking away from The Order has helped her however for she’s free to help anybody as she wishes …not that that hasn’t stopped her when people aren’t looking.
