Okay, tumblr ate the first attempt at this post, hopefully it doesn’t devour this one as well! Here’s the deal, I can’t seem to figure out a good ending for this fic to save my life and I don’t want it to languish in the pile of unfinished wips. So I’m going to post what I have here on tumblr to at least get it out there somewhere. If anyone has suggestions for an ending I am all ears! HUGE shoutout to @venn364 for helping me figure this fic out to this point and for helping me Horde-ify hush a by baby!

Adora and Catra looked at one another and shrugged. “Yeah okay.”

Glimmer was relieved, don’t get her wrong, but that was…not exactly what she’d expected. “Just like that? That simple?”

It wasn’t like she’d expected them to just hop on board with her, even if she’d wanted this to all pan out.

Catra rolled her eyes, a bit too theatrically thanks, before answering, “Well, I mean, sucks to be doing Cadet chores again, but, whatever. Just a buncha kids.”

“I feel like I’m missing something,” Glimmer grumbled, rubbing a hand at her neck. “You’re not trying to act too cool, and you’re not freaking out enough.”

They shared another confused look before Adora spoke up. “I mean, why would I? We’ve done a bunch of rounds at the Infant Pods, more than our fair share in fact.” That last part she said with a pointed look at her oldest friend.

Catra stretched lazily, “I will not apologize.”

“Point is, we can do this. It’s pretty simple over all, especially with you there as a third!”

Glimmer laughed, “Wait. Hang on, seriously? I’ve never babysat before but you two have?”

“Really? Weird. But, uh, yeah. Everyone in the Horde has some child rearing experience, it’s literally part of your Cadet chores and rotation.”

The galaxy must be on it’s side right now. The Horde, the EVIL Horde, had enforced babysitting chores. “Why?”

Adora shrugged, “Well someone has to make sure they’re clean and fed, doing their homework-”

“Not destroying property or getting in dangerous situations before we could send them to the meat grinder-”

“Keeping them out from underfoot, and getting their energy out too.”

“Also the whole, sometimes babies just die when you don’t, like, hold them enough thing. ...What? Did you think Hordak was at the Pods rocking them to sleep?” Catra laughed.

It certainly was an image. Glimmer giggled as she pictured Hordak overwhelmed by a literal wave of babies. “No, I just never thought about it I guess. You’ll have to teach me.”

They both grinned and Glimmer felt her heart skip a beat. It was, look, don’t judge, it was a really, really good look on them, okay?

It only took a few minutes to arrive at the temporary nursery Perfuma had set up. While Plumeria was still being cleaned up, she’d wanted a safe place for the children to go, and only needed a few extra hands to help as she pulled her subjects to help redesign their homes. Not that she’d put it like that. Something about syncing their harmonies while reconnecting with their innermost roots? The point was that Glimmer had offered to help mostly to help and partially to avoid another extremely long and boring meeting, but one teleporting queen with no childcare experience was not ideal. Perfuma had been the one to suggest Catra and Adora, seeing as the reconstruction really relied more on Perfuma regrowing the homes in this particular space.

So, they were working with what they had. And apparently that meant Horde soldiers. Experienced Horde soldiers who knew what to do with kids. Weird!

When they arrived, it was chaos.

Catra couldn’t help the small grimace she wore, she’d never been fond of IPD. Kids are loud, they don’t have boundaries or respect for other’s boundaries either. She doesn’t know how many times some toddler or Junior Cadet had petted her or pulled her tail and ears with their mysteriously sticky little hands while covered in snot. But she could also say that the one good thing about it was, without fail, some baby was going to think you were the hottest shit ever. And it had done wonders for her low self esteem as a Cadet to know that she’d always collect a gaggle of kids who everyone claimed were impossible to handle doing exactly what she wanted.

It had actually been kind of hilarious out in the Crimson Waste to use some of the tactics she’d learned in the IP against grown gangsters and thugs.

Catra could also say that the very next best thing about it was watching Adora either slowly unravel into a total mess or watching Adora get all the other kids under her thumb. Not that Adora would think of it like that, the goody two shoes, but kids seemed to naturally either love the blonde or desire nothing more than to destroy her.

Especially at the time, Catra could relate.

She was actually kind of interested to do this now just to see Adora go at it again.

And also Glimmer apparently had no experience with kids and Catra would kill to watch that skiff wreck. No, ugh, she had promised to help hadn’t she? Alright, no watching that skiff wreck unless it happened before she could intervene.

She snickered a little as, just like she used to, Adora gave the attention claps that none of these particular kids would know. Embarrassingly, the old rhythm still made Catra’s back straighten a hair just thanks to the amount of times she’d heard it.

Adora’s voice rang loud and clear across the little fenced in area, “Atten-shun!”

The kids mostly stopped, but Catra had a feeling that was due to an adult shouting and not out of their training. Did rebellion kids have training? They had to get some kind of education for sure. Huh. Probably should look into that, like, now that it was post war and all.

“Hello, salutations, and greetings!” Adora started her old spiel as if she’d never stopped, putting on her ‘force captain’ voice which was almost a mockery more than anything else. Not that Adora realized that. “I am Adora, this is Catra, and this is Glimmer. Today we will be watching, caring, sharing, and not botching a wonderful day of enrichment with you. Starting now we will do our very best to educate, captivate, and celebrate without need to castigate! It is time to have fun and run, uh, under the sun! Can I get a hoo-ra?”

The part about their newly acquired sun was a nice touch, Catra mental gave Adora extra points for finally having learned to change it on the fly. Catra weakly lifted a fist to mutter ‘hoo-ra’ with a few confused kids. Oof. Rough, but not unexpected. These ankle biters hadn’t been trained to respond promptly and loudly to Horde commands.

Yet it still had about the same effect. The children were already split down the middle looking at Adora like she was a complete idiot or like she was the best thing ever. Soon more of them would think she was the best thing ever than not, kids loved Adora’s canned speech. It always got a few laughs. Kids were easily entertained by someone clearly putting on a show and rhyming.

Adora put on an over the top look of bewilderment, putting her fists on her hips in some sort of quasi-power pose before asking, “What kind of hoo-ra was that? I want you to shout from deep in your lungs, you won’t sound dumb when it’s all in good fun! Now can I get a HOO-RA?”

Catra gave a slightly more enthusiastic call, and was delighted when Glimmer gamely screamed her head off and then blushed as the kids stared at her, because they had still not shouted. Alright, this had already paid off! Nothing better that watching Glimmer blush like that.

Adora was smiling warmly at the queen, that was always a good look on her. “I SAID HOO-RA!”

This time they managed to get most of the brats on board. A whole army of kids no taller than her waist who were thrilled to scream, a few even did it more than once. It was kind of nostalgic.

“THAT’S what I call a call! I am floored by this horde-” Adora’s eyes widened in panic as she tried to pivot her pre-written speech for a second time. “-o-of wards! Floored! I am floored!”

Aaaand twice was one too many alterations. As much fun as it would be to watch Adora fall apart over it, Catra knew it was mean. And she was trying to, you know, to be less mean.

“Ca-Adora,” wow this was harder than she’d thought. She hadn’t almost called Adora a Cadet in years. “Will be working with any of you who’d like to play a singing and marching game. Line up in front of Adora if you want to join.”

Catra grabbed Glimmer’s hand to pull her forward, which really was only for the benefit of getting to hold Glimmer’s hand. “Anyone who does not want to play a game can join us, we will be taking care of the infants so it’ll be quieter.”

She was not surprised when most of the children flocked to play. There were always a few quiet ones or nervous ones who would hang back, and she was counting on it. Sure enough four kids shuffled their way instead of towards Adora, who was already sorting her little platoon into rank and file, teaching them a quick sound off to learn their names.

Catra motioned between her and Glimmer, “You know our names, what are yours?” The kids shifted awkwardly, looking at one another to start. Catra smirked. “If you don’t want to say I will give you a nickname. For instance, this is now Sparkles.”

Glimmer glared at her, but Catra didn’t stop or let her get a word in edgewise. She pointed at the first kid with glasses, “You can be Specs, short for specification.” A bold faced lie if she’d ever told one. “Stripes, I like your shirt!” Less of a lie. “Flower Power just like Princess Perfuma,” she nodded to the boy with a flower crown. The last kid was nervously shifting hoof to hoof, “And Two Step you got some fancy looking moves.”

“And what do you all think we should call Catra?” Glimmer asked, grinning evilly, as if the kids wouldn’t just suggest kitty or fluffy or whiskers. Maybe tails if someone was feeling creative.

“Kitty!”

Catra chuckled, it was like clockwork. “How about Big Cat? It’s cooler than Kitty!” They nodded gamely to the change. “Cool. Now, does anyone want to help me with the babies? We just need to hold them.”

That was how Catra found herself leaning back against a tree with an infant sleeping on her chest after she’d situated Glimmer and the quartet. All while snickering at some of the concerned looks being shot their way as Adora got the platoon marching and singing. If they weren’t gonna get their asses in gear to manage all the hyper kids, then they could suck it up. Besides, it wasn’t even that intense of a song.

“I think that learning is cool!” The kids echoed after Adora. “Which is why I will stay in school!”

It was schlocky and dorky, if she’d been over there she’d have died of embarrassment already.

Still, Catra couldn’t help but melt a little as Adora exaggerated a high march and then kids behind her did basically whatever they wanted as she marched them around the nursery. It was nice. Even if it made Adora look really dumb, it also made her look happy. Something Catra hadn’t seen a lot of from her in years. Oh no, she was getting mushy about this now?

Disgusting. She needed a distraction stat.

“Anyone have a good story?” Catra asked and after a beat of silence, promptly ignored the kids as they started almost talking over each other to tell something about their day or who knows what. Thankfully Glimmer seemed interested even if a little stiff and awkward. Catra was grateful that her fur hid a sudden blush as she watched Glimmer holding a baby and being enthusiastically engaged in the kids' stories.

Wow.

She gets away from the Horde for less than a year, and now she’s getting sappy over Sparkles.

Gross.

Adora, of course, had a plan. A good one with details and everything!

She was using her patented IPPA (thankfully, things had to be going pretty bad for her to resort to Infant Pod Plan B) and so far things had gone well. She’d taught her platoon to march, even got them to make up some rhymes to sing for it (even if she’d had to backtrack after one of the boys said ‘butts’ and everyone then started to just scream sentences with little sense ending with ‘butts’). After a bit of that she got them doing some basic exercise with her. Jumping jacks and running, she’d then start a game of charge and was already wincing in sympathy pains as some of the kids hurled themselves full speed at the enemy team only to fold in half around their linked arms. Still, the point was to give them free reign here to lose their minds and wear out their bodies a little in preparation for a well earned nap or quiet play time.

After making sure that Catra had eyes on her group, Adora left to hunt down water for everyone, and maybe spent a little time making heart eyes across the field.

Catra, despite what she thought, was pretty good with kids. Especially little infants. Between her fluff, heat, and purrs she was an instant baby soother. Adora would know, she was once the only big baby that Catra would soothe the same way. When they’d been younger, Catra used to lose her temper during IPD, but the older they got the more she’d pull it together. There had always been something heartwarming about watching Catra sit down with a kid who was upset and listen to them intently.

Then there was Glimmer. Gosh, she’d been so nervous going in, but seemed to be quickly becoming a favorite. Because Glimmer always listened to people, no matter their age, and her high energy responses appeared to be winning her fans. The more she integrated with the kids, the more she relaxed too. And there was something absolutely mind blowing about watching her bounce a little baby in her arms, while gasping in genuine delight at something a kid had scribbled into the dirt with a stick.

Adora didn’t even blush, didn’t feel a lick of shame as she quietly got affirmation that yes, girls.

“Ew,” one of the kids snickered after finishing their water, looking right at her before making a face.

She smiled, shrugging and offered her best, worldly advice. “Girls are great.”

“Ew.” They repeated before giggling and skipping away to their friends.

Whether they eventually agreed with her, liked boys instead, like everyone, or even no one, Adora felt very assured in her assessment of wow girls pretty, so she let it slide.

Later, standing at the barrel and handing out gourds of water or helping kids re-apply their protective balms (the sun was nice, but the sun could apparently burn you which was insane), she did another check. Taking note of any particularly worn out kids to send over to Catra’s group, and was very pleased that no one seemed to be really injured. Man, this was way easier than manhandling Recruits who were about to be Junior Cadets. Maybe she could do this more often? Without all the jockeying for power and praise it was actually fun.

After another thirty minutes whizzed by according to her internal clock, Adora decided it was time to start her platoon’s cool down for water and snacks. Maybe a nap after that. It was all smooth sailing!

Adora managed to make eye contact with Catra, flashing a quick few hand signs they’d made up when they were eight and almost lived in the pods between Adora’s clumsiness and Catra’s random bursts of high energy. Catra nodded, both hands occupied as she bottle fed one of the infants, and Adora almost died. First of cuteness, because Catra was looking so cute! But also from laughter because Glimmer’s tongue was sticking out between her teeth in concentration as she carefully fed another infant. And also because she looked super cute doing it!

What a sight! It took her another minute to realize she was just standing there staring at them with a horrifically soft smile on her face. And Catra was staring back with an equally mortifying soft look. And Glimmer was now looking between them with her own embarrassingly tender look.

So this is how I die, public affection.

For some reason this was the thing that set her off. Blushing as red as her jacket, Adora pivoted around to call the platoon to get some snacks and more water. Which, considering most of them were either still singing or making up marching songs, took a little bit to organize.

The snack and water break had been decently timed, they had just finished burping the last of the babies when Adora called all the kids over. Catra waited with Glimmer until everyone else had something to eat, before mingling as best she could. It was more second nature to keep her head on a swivel, making sure no kids were making a jailbreak and no one was beating someone else’s face in. Although that probably wasn’t a concern on the Rebellion side. Maybe she’d have to rescue a kid from suffocating under a bunch of hugs?

She shrugged and got a gourd of water, barely finishing it before Two Step tugged at her hand. They’d only gotten more energetic the longer they’d been helping, so she wasn’t even surprised when they asked, "Can I pet your fluff!?"

Catra sighed heavily. This is what she got for wearing a crop top around children. She turned to look at the Two Step and smiled as best she could while also dying inside. If she didn’t let it happen following her own rules, many kids would simply find a way to make it happen anyways. Better to get it out of the way and without sticky hands. Seriously what do kids even do that makes their hands that sticky? "Sure, but only if I can touch your antlers, they look fuzzy."

They almost stabbed her in the stomach with said nubbly antlers in their excitement, apparently oblivious for at least a moment about how fragile they were. Two Step was still wiggling around the way they had the whole afternoon as they rushed to explain, "They are! They’re new and growing in bigger and my dad says that someday they’ll be HUGE like his!"

She ran a few fingers carefully along the warm velvet and nodded, it was softer than she’d actually expected it to be, and it almost seemed like she could feel the blood pumping in them? Or maybe her brain was messing with her? Either way, weird. "Neat. Your turn kiddo."

Catra did her best to not groan in annoyance when the girl simply leaned forward to rub her face on the fluffiest part of her belly.

"You said pet."

"I am petting!"

"Petting is done with your hands, not your face."

"Says who?"

Well shit, had her there. “...alright, well played.”

She glared as the trademark a high pitched whistling sound of cooing alerted her to Glimmer and Adora looking at her with hearts in their eyes and sparkles around their faces. Not literally, but she could picture it. The traitors. She could see Glimmer mouthing the words so cute and groaned. She was not cute! Ugh!

“Okay, I think that’s enough.”

Two Step grumbled but let go. “Thanks!” And with that they skipped away to hang out with the other kids.

Oh yeah, definitely time to put the kids down for a nap if they could.

It had taken longer that Glimmer expected to calm down the kids. A small handful of them went tearing off around the field cackling like loons as Catra easily loped after them on all fours. Which of course resulted in more kids wanting to get chased for some reason, shrieking in delight each time Catra put on a hair more speed to tap their arms or legs. Eventually even they were exhausted and fell panting into the grass for Adora and her to watch while Catra continued herding. It was adorable and Glimmer was never, ever gonna let her live down her afternoon of being a sheep dog. If only Bow or Entrapta were here to take a picture!

Glimmer reluctantly left her post of watching and jeering at ‘Big Cat’ to help Adora get the youngest ones situated and sleeping rolls or blankets laid out. For the ones who refused to take a nap (whether because they weren’t tired or wanted to pretend they weren’t tired), Glimmer asked around to find a few decks of cards for them to use. She wrangled a promise from each group to be quiet so their friends could sleep, and by the time she’d finished that it was tempting to take her own nap.

Adora was efficiently sorting kids into sleeping spaces, and Glimmer smiled a bit at the way she let pairs and groups just pile up together. Having seen the impossible looking ways Adora and Catra could be found tangled up after a nap, she felt pretty confident that they knew what they were doing.

When Catra finally arrived with the last two kids, both of whom she carried under her arms as they giggled, Glimmer was grateful for the chance to relax a little with her friends. She nudged Adora’s side as they passed and whispered, “Maybe afterwards you can use She-Ra? You know, give them a climbing gym or swing them around.”

Adora blinked rapidly before breaking out in a huge grin and did a little over the top flexing before they made their way over to sit with Catra. And for a few minutes they sat in a peaceful silence, enjoying the sounds of the forest and leaning against one another.

“Pssst,” Stripes rolled over to look at them, making huge puppy dog eyes before asking, “Sing us a lullaby?”

Glimmer’s eyes sparkled as she turned to watch Adora and Catra apparently debate the issue, because hello! Getting to hear them sing lullabies! They rapidly signed back and forth, faces squashing and stretching as they added emphasis to the conversation before they turned and nodded.

“Okay,” Adora said softly, “but you can’t laugh, we only know Horde songs.”

“The Horde had songs?” A little boy asked, popping up from his blanket with a huge smile.

“Yeah we did. To be fair, they’re not uh,” Adora faltered and quickly looked at Catra, which to be fair Glimmer hadn’t considered that the songs they knew might be inappropriate. She quickly decided that she also didn’t really care.

“Adults probably wouldn’t like them here.” Catra supplied with a mischievous grin, apparently knowing that the kids would all be desperate to hear them now.

“Catra!” Adora hissed in what was probably supposed to be a whisper.

“I want to hear!” Glimmer added fuel to the fire and snickered at the look of betrayal on Adora’s face. “What? I do!”

She threw her arms in the air before huffing in her fake annoyed voice, “Fine, I’ll sing a song!”

There was a moment before Adora shakily started to sing both a very familiar tune set to very different lyrics.

Hush-a-bye baby, your crying will cease For we will raise you, in safety and peace If the walls crumble, there’s no need to bawl We’ll burn the villains, princess and all

Glimmer sputtered, accidentally ending it before it even started, not just because the lullaby included a line about burning rebellion citizens to death including princesses. But also because her mother used to sing this to her! “Wait, wait, wait, that’s- that’s not how that song goes!”

“Wha- yes it is!” Adora huffed, arms crossing as she blushed, “I said you couldn’t be mean!”

“First of all, you said I couldn’t laugh and I didn’t! Secondly,” Glimmer cleared her throat to sing her version. She’d always loved singing, even took lessons when she was younger before deciding she’d rather do it for fun. But what was the point of being able to sing flawlessly under pressure if not to flex on your crushes?

Rock-a-bye baby, thy cradle is green; Father's a nobleman, mother's a queen; And Buckley’s a washer, who wears a gold ring; And Tambour’s a drummer, who drums for the king.

Not that she got any further than Adora did before being interrupted as well.

“Ew, it’s all princessy!” Catra jeered playfully getting a few giggles from the kids.

“Uh, yeah, my mom sang it to me when I was a baby!”

“Gross. Ours is better!”

Adora laughed nervously, apparently unsure what to do as their play fight went down in front of a room full of impressionable children. Which, really, was her own fault for not expecting it.

Glimmer puffed up and leaned forward, tapping Catra on the nose just to be a brat before issuing the challenge she knew would get results. “Prove it!”

Ah, the good old stand by of “prove it”, as equally effective as a double dog dare!

So Catra, looking genuinely affronted, took a breath and sang in a wholly and unfairly good voice.

Hush-a-bye baby, your crying will cease For we will raise you, in safety and peace If the walls crumble, there’s no need to bawl We’ll burn the villains, princess and all

Baby is drowsing, valiant and brave With Hordak’s power, disorder we’ll stave Though cadet’s sleeping, her dreams we all share For order and harmony’s, our duty to bear

Hush-a-bye baby, do not you fear Never mind, baby, your squad is right here Strong little fingers, but eyes must shut tight Stay sound asleep now, until morning’s light

“People sang to you as babies about Hordak’s power and burning people?” Glimmer asked, both perplexed at the Horde-ified version and slightly disturbed. No wonder some of their soldiers bought the Evil Horde’s propaganda if this was what they were taught from the cradle!

“Glimmer, I love you, and I say this with as much respect as I can,” Catra said without an ounce of respect in her body or soul, “We grew up in the Fright Zone under the eyes of commanding officers of the Evil Horde. What did you think they sang to us about?”

Well shit, had her there.

Governor Swann throws a lavish engagement party for the newly betrothed James and Elizabeth, but the celebration is interrupted when James receives an unexpected correspondence from his estranged father.

Approximately two hours into the party, she loses him.

Truthfully, the engagement ball had been her father’s suggestion. Despite James and Elizabeth’s obvious disdain for such functions—James, ever the picture of graciousness and cordiality, expressed his feelings considerably meeker than his fiancée—the governor could not forego the opportunity to celebrate the impending union of his only daughter and the decorated Commodore he’d always loved as a son.

The couple obliged him gratefully, though both found themselves shocked at the grandeur with which the event was thrown. The guest list not only boasted the presence of Port Royal’s finest, but a smattering of Weatherby’s contacts in London who were exceedingly happy to make the arduous trip, if only to determine for themselves the veracity of the legends about the Royal Navy’s fabled “Scourge of Piracy”.

Much to her surprise, Elizabeth finds herself in thorough enjoyment of the evening. She’s never cared for the social obligations of her station, but the thin gold band that newly adorns her left hand brings with it feelings of security and warmth, much like the man to whom it tethers her. James has been a steady fixture in her life since her early adolescence, treating her with kindness and respect at an age when she was frequently dismissed and condescended to by those in lower positions than he. She fondly recalls the countless times he patiently entertained her insatiable curiosities about his exploits at sea, even occasionally gifting her trinkets from his military escapades abroad. As she grew older, her adolescent infatuation with him bore heavier water, which he returned in spades of ardent devotion during their courtship.

She feels a small smile pull at the corners of her lips as she remembers the night of his proposal. It was an uncharacteristically cool evening in Port Royal, and the newly-minted Commodore had escorted her away from the suffocating crowd and toward a parapet overlooking the serene, sparkling waters of the Caribbean. Their mutual contempt for social engagements was a hallmark of their relationship, and she chuckles to herself thinking of the myriad dinner parties and elaborate balls during which they’d traded snide comments in conspiratorial whispers.

She takes great pride in cracking his stoic facade, causing him to spurt startling barks of laughter at inopportune moments that draw irate glares from their guests and color the tips of his ears a deep, bashful red. She enjoys this side of him, in large part due to the fact that it seems solely reserved for her. Under no other circumstances does he waver or relinquish control, yet the night of their engagement he appeared positively flustered. She had fought an adoring smile as she watched him silently war with himself, no doubt chastising himself for the adverse effects of his nerves.

His words wove gentle knots in Elizabeth’s heart, promising his love, adoration, and unrelenting devotion to her. She had never known a man as steadfast as James Norrington, and to be the subject of his affections was a stroke of good fortune she often found herself in awe of. Her answer came swiftly, enthusiastically, and affirmatively, bucking his cherished standards of propriety and drawing him down for a long, tender kiss.

The swell of the orchestra returns her from her reverie, and she scans the room for her fiancée, hoping to entice him to join her for a quiet moment in the garden, yet James—whom she normally spies pressed against a wall in hopes of avoiding detection—is nowhere to be found. His unannounced absence sets her on edge, and she slips out of the ballroom in search of him.

As she turns into the hallway, she spots the door to the study is slightly ajar, casting a sliver of moonlight upon her feet. She enters quietly, careful not to immediately notify him of her presence. The room is dark save for the pattering of starlight dancing across the floorboards, and she feels an inexplicable chill run through her despite the balmy evening air.

She spots James seated at the desk, illuminated only by the flame of a small candle flickering next to him. He is ensconced in shadows, and though she cannot see his face, he appears decidedly defeated, his shoulders slumped and head bowed over what appears to be a small letter.

“James?” she calls. “Are you alright? You seem to have disappeared from the fray.” She remains in the doorway, hesitant to enter, as if approaching a wounded animal.

James lifts his head at his name, and the expression he bears churns her stomach.

His dark brows are knitted in concern, his mouth contorted in a severe frown. Elizabeth is stricken by how uncharacteristically small he looks in this moment, and her heart aches. She crosses the room to meet him, resting a hand gently on his shoulder.

As if suddenly aware of the effect his rare, unguarded display of emotion has on her, James straightens himself and attempts to adopt an expression of neutrality. It doesn’t work, however, and Elizabeth’s throat tightens. She wishes he didn’t feel the need to always be strong for her, especially at the expense of conveying his true feelings.

“I’m sorry to have left so abruptly,” he sighs, reaching up to his shoulder to place his hand over hers. “I should have come to find you.”

“No need to apologize, darling.” She pauses for a moment, searching for a way to lighten his mood. After a brief silence, she ventures, “I was hoping for a respite from these stifling guests myself, but it appears you’ve taken the preferred hideout.”

He smiles weakly up at her in a halfhearted acknowledgement of her attempt, but the expression does not meet his eyes. He glances down at the parchment in his hand, and Elizabeth notices that it is trembling slightly.

“I received a letter from my father.”

A wave of dread washes over Elizabeth, nausea nestling uncomfortably in her stomach. James never speaks much of his father, but she knows enough to be aware that he holds no affection for the Admiral, nor he James.

“Oh,” Elizabeth breathes, her anxiety casting a thick cloud in the humid air. What small bouts of communication James has with his family are usually conducted through his mother, who often disguises her own praises for her husband’s. James is never fooled, but extends her the courtesy of letting her believe otherwise. “He wrote you directly?”

“I was similarly surprised,” he sneers. “Apparently he deems our engagement a worthwhile enough occasion for his semi-annual acknowledgement of my existence. Aren’t we lucky?”

James’ words are acidic, but the thinly-masked hurt behind the words renders his voice nigh unrecognizable. Elizabeth squeezes his shoulder in response, then kneels at his side to meet his mournful gaze.

“May I see it?” she asks, so softly it’s nearly lost in the cacophony of music and laughter wafting from the adjacent ballroom.

James obliges wordlessly, casting his eyes downward like a child being scolded. She desperately wants to rest his head against her chest and press soothing kisses into his hair, but she refrains. Instead, she accepts the letter from him, dusting a soft kiss across his knuckles as she does so.

She knows from James’ occasional mentions that his father is a man of few words, yet she still finds herself taken aback by the brevity of the letter. The man’s penmanship is immaculate but impersonal, spanning the width of the page as if striving to crawl off of it.

I wish to extend your mother’s and my sincere congratulations on your engagement. May this be an accomplishment you brandish with pride.

Elizabeth scoffs at the formality with which the letter is written. Though she‘s always been aware that the relationship she shares with her father is rare, the cold detachment etched into the parchment sends a shiver down her spine. She gleans more information about her future father-in-law from what is withheld from the page than what is written, taking particular notice of the seemingly deliberate omission of any personal details.

She makes a silent note to herself to hug her father particularly tightly the next time she sees him.

After a long pause, she lets out a bitter laugh that pierces the air and startles James out of his stupor.

“Clearly you gained more from it than I did,” he responds flatly.

Elizabeth shakes her head. “Not at all. I’m simply marveling at the misfortune of the poor couriers whose efforts were wasted delivering such a worthless correspondence. I only hope they were compensated handsomely for their needless trouble.”

James arches an eyebrow in question, then releases a sharp bark of laughter that seems to deflate his rigid frame. Encouraged by his responding levity, Elizabeth smirks. “Do you think he believes he’ll receive a court martial if he fails to sign off with his full title?”

James unleashes a smile that illuminates his face, flecks of gold glinting in his impossibly green eyes. Elizabeth’s heart swells at the sight. “Perhaps my own failure to do so is why I have not yet been similarly promoted,” he replies, slapping his hand over his heart in feigned shock. “And to think the solution has been in front of me all this time!”

“Oh, please,” Elizabeth answers, waving her hand dismissively. “The honorable Admiral Norrington seems to perceive our impending union as a suitable alternative.”

James’ face falls at this, and he reaches down to clasp her hands in his own. Though she plays off the comment in jest, James knows she resents the frequent comparisons of her hand in marriage to a prize won. “Elizabeth,” he begins, his emerald gaze intent on her. “I assure you his foolish assessment of our relationship is not founded in anything he’s learnt on my behalf.”

A conciliatory smile graces her lips. She knows this. No matter how forward she’s been, how explicitly clear she’s made her feelings for him, James has never taken her—or her word—for granted. Even on the eve of their engagement, when their prior expressions of love rendered the occasion more a formality than an official inquiry, she had noticed an air of trepidation about him, as if he anticipated a rejection. She wondered if something in a past life had prepared him for it.

“Of course,” she replies, cupping his cheek in her hand. “I simply find myself tiring of those who liken our marriage to a professional laurel. I understand not all are able to marry for love, but reducing the value of women to what they can offer to their husbands…” Her gaze drops to her lap as she trails off, unable to finish without betraying the bitter lump in her throat. She hadn’t expected such emotion to overcome her in her efforts to comfort him.

James pulls her closer to him, pressing his forehead against hers. The simple, wordless act of understanding diffuses the tension in both of their bodies, and they sit in silence for a few moments, relishing the quiet intimacy of being entirely anchored to one another. He presses a soft kiss to her hair and tilts her chin to meet his eyes. After a beat, he smiles mischievously, as if he was just made privy to an excellent joke.

“I would say we’ve been most gracefully acquiescent to the governor’s lavish wishes for our engagement celebration. Perhaps we could leverage him to limit the capacity of our wedding to a more… amenable audience?”

Elizabeth releases a satisfied grin that splits her features, positioning her chin authoritatively. “I believe that can be arranged.”

do you have any lone star or 911 blog suggestions? i just ditched me 911 side blog and started tumblr life fresh with a whole new main blog, so i'm looking for new people to follow, also do you have any suggestions for just getting involved in the fandom altogether?

Hello! I do have some suggestions, but I will warn you, my list is pretty limited because it’s very hard to find good 911 Lone Star blogs because many are multifandom and harder to discover. Anyway, all the more reason to share what I have.

It’s exciting that you’ve broken from your side blog. I will be stuck here as a side blog forever, which can be limiting, so I’m glad you’ve made the switch.

I tried to focus on blogs that have recent and consistent 911 Lone Star content, at least during the season, and many of them happen to multifandom so keep that in mind. Many of them also love 911 OG! I’m sure I missed important people I follow because it’s hard to weed through my follow list, so I’m sorry if I do. I’ve also provided some reasons why I love these people, mostly to give these wonderful humans some much-deserved love. (in no particular order just thrown out however my jumble mind sees fit)

First of all, @mybaby-tk, I love your blog and am always glad to see your posts, so you’d definitely make my list of blog suggestions. Lots of good takes. Lots of 911 Lone Star content. I cannot wait for more of your stuff.

@buckleystrand is a must. Some of the prettiest gifs, cute fics that make my heart leap, and just an overall really cool person. I think we’re blessed to have someone so talented in this fandom.

@evaneddie is the #1 Marjeo fan (and I’m glad about that). They are a great contributor of gifs and also 911 OG content. I’m so glad to see them on my dash and to have someone providing good writing as well as gifs.

@bluestar22x a real fandom hero who always engages with posts. I love seeing this blog and their comments pop up because you always have interesting things to see. Such a great person and has a great tagging system for those who like that kind of thing (would be amazing if Tumblr liked to make tags fully functional haha).

@eveningspirit is also excellent. A wonderful writer (one of my faves) and I think we tend to like the same kind of stories, so TASTE! Seems really sweet and she just has 10/10 vibes. Is great at enunciating thoughts. A real fandom gem.

@bucktks Loves Ronen very much. Makes pretty gifs that I could spend hours looking at. Seems like a very cool human. Aesthetically pleasing blog.

@tylerkennedystrand is one of the first people I found who posted Lone Star content. Lots of multifandom content but still and excellent person in the Lone Star fandom.

todoroki shouto fic recs

seeing as i can’t find any list like this here on tumblr, here is a list of my favorite todoroki-centric fics that i stumbled across so far on ao3. this list will most probably be updated once i stumble across more gems, but these are the todoroki-centric fics that tugged at my heartstrings the most at the moment! take note that these aren’t arranged in any particular order. if you have other fic suggestions that aren’t here, feel free to add them!

(fyi, this wasn’t meant to be shippy at all, but naturally, there are a few tododeku fics here because it’s one of the fandom’s biggest ships, but at it’s heart, it’s really about todoroki, and that’s what matters!)

the stars are floating and we are flying / lunalou / 39.k words / completed

Aizawa starts walking towards the exit, obviously expecting Shouto to follow him, but Shouto's feet are frozen in place. His eyes flicker from the distorted reflection of himself in the ice to where All Might is giving him a long look, eyes kinder than anything Todoroki has ever been deserving of, and he feels sick.

“Todoroki-kun,” Midoriya says gently, squeezing his arm in what Shouto presumes is meant to be a reassuring gesture. “It’s going to be okay.”

He doesn’t think Midoriya is in any place to tell him what okay is, all things considered, but he chooses to keep quiet on the matter.

notes: best todoroki-centric fic i’ve ever read. obvious todoroki whump, but mostly deals about his dissociation and how it makes an impact on how he lives his day-to-day life. it’s also accurate to how dissociation truly is like, so it’s not cliche in the slightest. can be considered as tododeku pre-slash, but as the tags say, it’s mostly gen, and more than being tododeku, it’s really todoroki & class 1-a, because everyone loves and cares for him

Shoto tries to kill himself, Kirishima is observant, Midoriya is roped into the fray, Aizawa is protective of his kids, and Class 1-A does their best to shower Todoroki with love and fluff.

notes: it’s pretty graphic, not gonna lie. that aside, it’s well-written and has a really nice build up. the tags are also promising, so it’s definitely something worth reading and waiting for.

(or: The first night in the dorms, Todoroki wakes up and half his room is covered in ice.)

notes: a mildly short hurt/comfort todoroki fic. it’s a bit of a mix of people helping todoroki and todoroki helping himself. regardless, it’s a pleasant read

Summer break begins with a violent attack from his father and a substantial amount of fear, but that’s alright because Midoriya is here.

notes: the last time this was updated was back in november of 2018, but there’s only one chapter left before it supposedly ends, and even if it never does get completed, it’s really good, and you can probably mentally write your own ending for the story, since the story has created enough background for that. warnings for actual scenes of child abuse in action, instead of it being merely referential, as well as for the tododeku moments, because todoroki is clearly in love with midoriya here, but the main topic is still about todoroki’s home situation.

It's been judged safe to send the students of UA home to their families for the first three weeks of summer, much to the relief of everyone whose name isn't Todoroki Shouto. Luckily, Midoriya has a solution for him, and Midoriya Inko has a lot of love to give.

notes: this is the last edition to the “send endeavor to the shadow realm” series, and i don’t think you need to read the entire series to understand this story, but it makes references to the past works of the series, so if you want to really understand every one of those references, then go check out the entire thing. they’re all really good anyway, so i doubt you’d be disappointed. take note that this is a tododeku fic, with some heavy todoroki whump in the latter chapters because of the villain that appears. also, midoriya inko is the absolute best

notes: the obligatory todoroki-turns-into-a-baby fic! class 1-a shows all the love for him and we get more insight on how todoroki’s abusive childhood affects him as he’s under the quirk that de-aged him. tododeku is already an established couple in the start of the fic, but since todoroki is a baby here, it’s not really touched upon, and if tododeku isn’t your cup of tea, you can still read this with the mindset that they’re just best friends

Todoroki desperately wants to be a good boyfriend, but he's worried his past traumas have infected him somehow. Made him unfit to be loved. But he'll be damned if he isn't at least going to try.

notes: an amazing fic of how todoroki’s trauma and parents’ abusive relationship might affect his romantic relationships (in this case, it’s midoriya). it’s a sequel to another fic of the author’s that’s also quite todoroki-centric, but i enjoyed this one a lot more, so it’s why i’m putting it here on the list. the first story is also really nice though!

AU where Shouto snaps after his accident, leaving his dysfunctional family and shitty father to become a villain—and Class 1-A helps him find his path again

notes: this is a villain!todoroki fic that i’m super looking forward to! he’s basically going from villain to hero once all might insists on giving todoroki a chance by enrolling him in ua. honestly, this fic has so much potential, and i’m excited to see where it’ll go!

Hello naughty children, it’s time for Nissa’s Opinions

Coming in RIGHT under the wire for October book club, but still. I have read the reboggles I could find on T’s tag (bc tumblr search is what it is), and now it’s my turn.

General Questions:

1 - What did you like best / least?

I liked the worldbuilding a lot - I want to know more about the Reaches and the Travelers and why everything is made of wood in Kolonya?? Least... we will get to lol

2 - Would you read more by this author?

mmmmmmmmmmaybe. Like I want to know wtf happened, but I’m also still pretty mad about the ending. We shall see.

3 (a) - If this story followed a different character’s POV, who would you pick and why?

tbh the last thing this book needs is more POVs

3 (b) - Did you like how the three different sister’s POV was used to push the narrative forward? Did it make your reading experience more or less enjoyable?

idk, it was a little slow for my tastes. I did like that the girls all had different perspectives, but I wish they’d had more different personalities. Like Ren and Akeylah are the same person, just brought up with different abuse. And if Zofi has a personality beyond anger, she’s probably the same, too.

4 - What scene stuck with you the most?

I really liked the first time Ren and Zofi confronted Akeylah in the library - it was kinda “did we just become best friends?! YUP!” but also FINALLY gave them a team vibe and distinct specialties.

5 - What kind of lingering questions were you left with (besides the obvious cliffhanger WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO ME ELLEN)

literally what was the point of this being its own book if the single main conflict wasn’t actually resolved???

6 (a) - Could you relate to the characters & their story arcs?

Meh. I mean, a little bit? But overall I didn’t find them terribly relatable.

6 (b) - How do you feel about each character’s ending?

WHAT. ENDING.

7 - Were there times you disagreed with a character’s actions / would have done something different in their shoes?

YES MANY.

8 - Were you rooting for any character or pairing in particular?

I wanted to like Akeylah best bc she seems really sincere and genuine, BUT then suddenly all of her “I’m a secret genius” calculating stuff comes up and it’s a little tough to reconcile those things. I liked each of the girls okay, but I didn’t feel like there was a clear answer to who should rule (aside from Ren’s musing about all 3 of them, maybe).

9 - Do you picture any specific fancasts when reading the book?

The only one I have any clear idea what she looks like is Akeylah, but I can’t think of anyone who looks like that, you know? I think of Zofi as looking like an angry Ice Climber from Smash Bros. And like...idk maybe Letitia Wright for Ren? Maybe Lupita Nyong’o or Gugu Raw for Rozalind, unless she’s supposed to be the girls’ age, then somebody younger, I guess? Idk.

Story Specific Questions:

11 - Did you enjoy how each girl’s secret was teased out? Do you like when authors slow-roll this kind of information?

I do like a slow rollout (”who taught him ‘rollout’?!”), I think there’s a lot to be said for setting readers loose in medias res, BUT I also think it wasn’t handled amazingly here - idk maybe it’s just me, but I felt like it was sort of stage-whispering. Like “oh no I hope no one guesses my TERRIBLE SECRET!!! I would be in SO MUCH trouble!!” It just felt very obvious to me, although the secrets themselves weren’t obvious (the first time we learned about them).

12 - Do you think each character was fleshed out sufficiently, such that you had a sense of the different personality for each sister?

Not really? Kind of. An attempt was made with the girls, but basically no one else got any dimension whatsoever.

13 - Do you have guesses on who the blackmailer is?

Not really, bc this book broke every rule of how to write an engaging mystery. Like literally the only people who could POSSIBLY be it from the information we have are Rozalind, Vidal, and Andros, none of which really make sense given everything else, but like???? I guess Rozalind is my best guess bc she was acting kinda sus re: the acolyte etc. But I think that would be a bad choice unless a lot of other things change between now and that reveal.

14 - Was Yasmin a believable antagonist to you?

Like. I thought she was SCREAMINGLY obviously a red herring the entire book. She was brusque with the girls, and there was some weirdness in the first scene where the girls meet the king where I thought maybe she was possessing him, but that’s obviously just the weird mind link thing they did, and that’s it. Like being a bitch isn’t illegal.

15 - Do you think the daughters’ secrets were defensible actions?

Kinda? Like, definitely understandable, but like, is murder ever defensible? Ren had no reason to suspect her information would be used the way it was (whether or not Danton knew is something I’m not convinced on either way), Akeylah had no reason to believe she wasn’t cursing the man she fully expected to kill her (although MAYBE she should have paid closer attention during the cursing itself?? Like, the distance seems like it should have played a role in how hard it was to find “her father”), and Zofi perhaps overreacted, but used what seemed like appropriate force at the time in defense of another’s life (or rather she couldn’t/didn’t want to think of a way to simply restrain or incapacitate Nicolen, so stabby stabby). Was it stupid? Yes, for all of them. But they’re children (are they 18? I forget how old they’re supposed to be. Also, why are they the same age, if they are? was that just Andros’s Good Fuckin Year?)

16 - How do you feel about this unique system of magic?

WEIRD. I NEED MORE INFORMATION. WHY does the blood have to be drawn? Where does it go? What is the scarring situation with these people? What about the SHARDS OF GLASS permanently embedded in Zofi’s legs? Speaking of which, how the FUCK are Travelers out here hand-blowing glass in a mobile way??? That’s not a pick-up-and-carry craft! What’s the cooldown period for tithing? Why is it CALLED tithing? Who are you tithing TO? What negative effects are there for tithing for too long? Zofi mentions that they exist, but this is never explained. I feel like after all her reading, Akeylah should be able to answer these questions for me. BUT SHE DIDN’T.

17 - Was the theme of racism sufficiently handled?

Handled..??? If by that you mean vaguely suggested as existing and occasionally seems to have affected some characters’ lives, sure. Like, the closest we got was “Vidal’s not as racist as some other people yay!”

18 - Do you have any theories about the poem found in the library?

tbh I don’t even remember a poem in the library, just the notes about the weird echo situation.

19 - How did you feel about the cliffhanger ending?

BAD. VERY BAD. It was like the ending of Cars in that it retroactively ruined a lot of the book for me. NOTHING was accomplished in this ENTIRE book WHY

Not at all! The majority of fiction books don’t use chapter titles. They can be fun, especially in certain genres, but they’re in no way necessary.

Nonbinary character shenanigans

@thebravetinsoldier asked: Hi! I’m writing a steampunk story were the main character is being hunted because they’ve cheated death and become immortal by changing their “deceased” parts with robotics and magic. I really want this character to be nonbinary, but part of the explanation is that they’ve changed parts of themselves so much that they no longer remember if they were a boy or a girl. Is this a bad thing? Sorry for the bad formulation, English is not my first language.

First up, I want to clarify that there’s nothing inherently wrong with most concepts in which nonbinary people are robots or mythical creatures, but it does paint an uncomfortable picture simply because there are so few nonbinary character in existence who are actually human, creating a implication that nonbinary people are not-quite-human because humans are the ones who have binary genders.

You fix that particular issue with a small adjustment: Let there be fully human/non-magical nonbinary characters in the world, even if they’re just a side characters who only appears in one scene.

The main problem here though, is the idea that physical appearance determines identity. Rather than presenting the main character as not being able to identify whether they’re a binary gender, it’s far better to present it as them knowing they don’t (and have probably never) felt like a binary gender, and feeling happy with the way their body is androgynous, because they don’t feel the need to present as a specific gender*.

Let me illustrate it this way: A girl who losses her physical, female body (or is born in a male body) will be no less a girl, even if society tries to tell her that she could or should be a boy. With time, she’ll still decide she is in fact a girl, no matter what her body says. The same is true with nonbinary people. If a person composed of robotics and magic decides they’re nonbinary, then it’s because they’ve always been nonbinary; they might have just taken a while to figure it out, especially if they original had a body their society told them had to assign them a binary identity.

(*this is not a qualification of being nonbinary by the way, though it is a common feeling among many nonbinary people.)

These Treacherous Tides, the series

@kiarazuri asked: You’ve mentioned before that Pearl is set in a mermaid series called These Treacherous Tides (awesome title, btw) and I was wondering how many books you’ve got planned? Also whether or not any of the books will interact with each other or just be set in the same world?

The These Treacherous Tides series is going to be a more or less unconnected series of romance/family-oriented books about different species of merfolk (and humans), though I’m not opposed in any way to cameos, especially of side characters.

I don’t officially have a second book planned yet, but merpeople are one of my favorite things in existence, and the moment I finished Our Bloody Pearl I knew I wanted to write more books about them. I do have two concepts I want to play with in future books, so I’ll be fleshing them out further and picking a direction for them once I’m finished with We Are, We Are Monsters.

I would definitely suggest creating some kind of blog for writing, and in my experience the writeblr community here is very encouraging and one of the most interactive writing communities on the web. The one thing I will mention though, is that every follower you talk to (i.e. are acquaintances or friends with) are worth a hundred followers you don’t know. I owe all my success to having a ton of writeblr friends who have (and continue to) reblog my posts like they’re gold.

Writing children

@bloodybutterfly222 asked: Hey! I really love your tips, and I thought maybe you could help me with a problem I've been stumbling in. I have a story that partially revolves around parenting (bonding with a 2-year-old, more specifically) but I realized I don't know how to write children speech/dialogue. Since I've never had much contact with children myself, I'm even more at a lost about how to portray it significantly and yet accurately. Do you happen to have any tips on the matter?

I would love to help you, but I have little current experience in this area too. (Which I’m kicking myself over, because I did nanny through all of college, but I didn’t actually think about the way children speak while I was doing it and so when I write my own child characters they tend to be really stiff and generic.)

The one piece of advice I will impart is this: Children are a lot smarter and braver and more creative than they’re given credit for, and they really do say the darnedest things. Some of my most memorable experiences with kiddos:

An eight year old asked me where evil and sin came from if god didn’t create it and then had a theological conversation with me that most adults couldn’t match.

He and his younger bother decided the heroes of our story would win by buying the villain a million ketchup covered pancakes.

Same younger bother spent ten minutes jumping on his bed shouting chocolate chips at the top of his lungs because he didn’t want to sleep.

Also same young brother would tell everyone he was moving across the country for exactly seven years whenever he was angry.

Multiple instances of really polite 4-6 year old kids coming up to me while I worked retail at the Zoo, asking some variation of “Excuse me, miss, but would be okay if I could buy one of those cups, thank you” and then conducting the entire purchase on their own.

There’s no trick to writing this sort of character; you just write them. Show her being both strong and nurturing, independent and compassionate. Explore the way these traits interact and enhance each other. Does she love her own freedom and want to provide others who are oppressed the same independence she’s found? Does she see compassion as something the strong are required to give? Does she believe true heroes are the ones who fight for others? Look deeper into how she became who she is and why she fights for those she fights for, and then carry that throughout the story in every scene, every choice she makes.

Differentiating casts who feel similar

@katekarl asked: Alright, I could use some help with this WIP. I have a heavy cast of female characters, and I need a way to keep them from sounding too similar. Some of them ARE similar, and the differences in worldview/personality/dialogue might be a little too nuanced. What are some ways that I can try and keep them from looking like they were copy-pasted into their different roles?

Bullet points!

Unless your world is heavy on the sexism and holds to very constricting gender norms, it shouldn’t make any difference that they’re all women; they should have just as diverse a range of personalities, hobbies, strengths, etc as if they were a group of any mix of genders, so long as the class and cultural diversity doesn’t change.

If your characters are too similar to differentiate between them, then you probably don’t actually need all of them. Any two characters who consistently make very similar choices should almost always be combined. If two characters are in fact making very different choices despite being similar in personality and background, then it might be time to sit down and figure out where those choices are coming from and adjust one of the characters to make the origin of their choices obvious.

In my opinion, quirkier characters are always more fun than un-quirky characters, and there are a million different crazy and eccentric traits you can give your characters to make them stand out. (I have a post about developing side characters here which has a few more, similar concepts.)

Writing in your native language vs English

Hi, I can speak English on a B2/C1 level but it's not my native language. I want to write a novel but idk what language I should write in. I have a poetry blog in English and I used to write stories in English but I feel like something more serious requires wider vocabulary and better language skills in general. I have nowhere to post/publish it in my native language though, so it would probably end up forgotten if I were to write it in my native language:/ what do you think I should do?

I don’t have any advice other than this: You’ll get better at a language the longer to try to write more complicated things in it. If you want to write something more serious in English someday, the only way you’ll get there is by writing something serious is English now, even if you do a poor job of it at first.

I’m glad it could help! I’ve been struggling as a writer (and human) with depression and anxiety for year now, and I’m just happy to share what I’ve learned <3 I’ll admit that some days I don’t... well I almost said I don’t win this battle, but that’s not a mentally healthy way of looking at it. Some days I have to give myself time to recoop. Some days, taking proactive steps towards tomorrow is the best course of action, even if that doesn’t include writing. (And the taking to best course of action is always a successful day, even if you didn’t get to any of the things you wanted to.)

Anyhow, I’m proud of myself for coming this far and I’m proud of you all for growing alongside me!

Hello! Your Traitor Uraraka theory was an amazing read! I want to dive into the world of character/story/literary analysis too, but I dont know where or how to start... Any advice/tips you could share?

Thanks so much! I’m honestly flattered you would ask… I’m ahobby writer so a lot of what I know about analysis is what I learnedin grade school, on my own, or adapted from what I know about artcriticism & analysis….. Since you’re not sure on the start,I’ll just talk about all the core things I feel helped me getinterested in this.

Read If I had torecommend anything specificfor reading, I’d say lookinto classic literature – not because its “critically acclaimed,”but because a lot of the time classic literature has been analyzed byprofessionals in their fields, so it can be a nice way to see howother people handle character interpretation, storytelling, worldbuilding, and so on. I liked Shakespeare a lot, and you probablywouldn’t be surprised to hear that people analyze the shit out ofShakespeare. I probably picked up the most of my understanding ofcharacter analysis from indulging in Shakespeare alone.

Don’t like Shakespeare? I’d say look into stories that are just over 50 years old; Lord ofthe Rings, Catcher in the Rye, Pride & Prejudice, Lord of theFlies…. So long as you can find actual scholars analyzing it,you’re golden. Read things you enjoy; if you like anime and only care about that…maybe check out textbooks on classic anime.

Alongwith looking up how others analyze, start being critical with all themedia you consume. Movies are a great way to do this because it’sshort format and easyconcumption. You can stayfocused on critical thinking for a couple of hours while enjoyingsomething–I also think movie reviews are a good way to experiencecritical analysis. And don’t just watch good movies… watch badones too, and figure out why they’re bad.

WriteActuallywrite. Take all the interesting things you learned and apply it tosomething. Don’t just think about it; the tragedy about onlythinking is that nothing really solidifies like it does once youfinally put it out there. Talkto friends about it if you can drag them into aconversation;a lot of my analysis started out because I was talking with otherpeople. If you don’t have anyone to talk to about a series or don’twant to bother people with your miscellaneous thoughts, get a sidetumblr or a dreamwidth and just write things there to get themdown–ifyou’reshy, just don’t tag things.Tbh, sometimes I just write things out and then delete them when I’mfinished just so I can get the thought out of me. Writing is just apowerful tool tohelp organize thoughts into cohesive opinions.

Butdon’t just write thoughts only… build on them. Write your owncharacters and stories just for fun. Write fanfiction. WriteAlternate Universes. Really just explore your own taste in fictionand the kind of things you yourself want to see. If there’s onevery easy thing I could suggest… take your favourite characters orship and slap them into story that already exists. I wrote one of myOTPs a few years ago into HasChristian Andersen’s theLittle Mermaid,andit was interesting andfuntrying to suit different characters into the roles of the story.

Writingand reading as a combination are just good things for you; they helpbuild competency with literature and language, andby just indulging in the two of these while remaining critical canjust naturally better your ability to read deeper into things.

ResearchAlongwith the earlier mentioned analyses that you should look into, it’sworth it to look into like extra resources. Check out interviews withyour favourite authors; look at like Ted Talks about creativity andwriting; read into tropes and motifs; find creative people you likeand follow their work and look for trends; lookinto writing concepts and themes.Storiesare just made up of patterns and once you start finding the patterns,you can start exploiting them. A Hero’s Journey is one of the mostfundamental patterns we can follow in storytelling, and with someabstract thinking we can start to predict the events that will occurin a story. A lot of my theory is built up on observing patterns.

IfI could point you toward one single video, it’s Kirby Ferguson’sTED talk “Embrace the Remix.” It talks about the idea thatnothing is original and all things are just remixed versions of eachother. This is part of why tropes exist; you could go look attvtropes.org and hit random and start learning about these patternsright now. Granted, I don’t recommend using tropes as a foundationof an argument, but knowing tropes can help you connect the dotsbetween series.

IfI had to suggest any non-literary research that’s worth lookinginto….Check out psychology, art, and/or culture. Psychology is just morepatterns, I use Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs when I write andobserve survival horror. Art is another way to tell a story and isespecially useful when observing visual media. Culture can help youunderstand why people write the way they do, becausethere is a difference between Eastern and Western media andstorytelling trends.

“Personality sections”Alittle back story on me: pretty much all of thereading/writing/researching I do thesedaysis because I do a lot of text-based roleplay on Dreamwidth. I’vebeen doing this for about8 years.Overthe years, I’ve written out easilyover 30 “personality sections,” which are basically 500-2kcharacter summaries–for characters like Sakura from Naruto, Makotofrom Free, Jake English from Homestuck, and so many others–as apart of a way to “prove” that I understand the character I’mroleplaying whenjoining organized groups.I’ve also read literallyhundredsof these personality sections because I joined vetting teams forsaid organized groups, and have written many rejectionresponses to help people understand where they can improve.A lot of people I know hate writingthese personality sections… but I love them.

Youcould join RP and get a feel for it thesame wayI did, but that might not be your thing. But the process of writingthese “personality sections” wasbroken down to a science byroleplayers,and can be seen as a base form of character analysis. Wetalkedabout a character’s personality, what shaped them to be that way,and sometimes how that affected them in the future of their story.When I led a vetting team, these were the requirements I set:

Mustbe at least three paragraphs long for minor characters, fiveparagraphs long for main characters. Players should be able to conveya good understanding of their characters, but just describing apersonality isn’t enough. Make sure that when you explain aparticular attitude that you back yourself up with some canon proof,otherwise mods have to wonder where you are getting this informationregardless of our knowledge of canon. Be sure to explain clearly andconcisely, organizing your paragraphs so related subjects aretogether. Avoid explaining the personality in such a way that itreads like a history section - generally this is determined byunnecessary use of chronological order.

Andthese are the same guidelines I hold myself to when I work on my ownpersonality sections. Some people have broken down personalitysections in such a way that they are formatted “three positivetraits, three negative traits” withsome variance.Some like to talk about important relationships aswell.I always defend that personality should be backed up with actualcanon evidence. “Uraraka is kind,” I could say, but I should backit up with an instance where she showed kindness, such as when shesaved Midoriya from tripping when they first meet.

TheorizingIfI’m honest, I don’t much like theorizing. I like to read theoriesand I like to think about things, but I’m not actually partial totrying to predict the future of a series because I feel likeserialized stories are too choppy to be worth my time, and there’snot much sense trying to predict the future of a story that’sfinished. I’m more inclined toward theorizing about the past, orwhat’s already happened but wasn’t explained.

Mydisinterest in theorizing kind of shows….I’ve only written twotheories for Tumblr–Urarakais the Traitor (My Hero Academia), and Both Shiros are the Clone(Voltron). I think I ended up being right about the second one butI’m not sure where the interview isthatproves it, justthat it was SDCC stuff.Thereason I’ve written any theories at all is because I personally wasmotivated by frustration–I didn’t know why people weren’ttalking about these things. SoI made a post to try to get people to talk. BeforeI posted my theory, no one would have looked twice at Uraraka andthat drove me nuts.Now I’ve made a following strong enough that Uraraka seems to beone of the highest contenders in terms of just… gossip. Which,thanks guys. I’m floored.

So…. Myadvice would be to pick a subject you think should be talked aboutand go for it. Do the research. Canon-review. Takenotes. Search for patterns outside what you’re trying to analyze.Writeand rewrite and rewrite again, becauseanalyzing is basically high school but fun.

And…lastly…. Prepare to be wrong. You have a different sense ofstorytelling than anyone else. I have been bitten right in the assbecause I viewed and loved many-a character because I saw them theway I wanted to, and the author clearly did not share my views.And people might not like your theory; people might super hate iteven, and that’s not such a big deal. In the end it’s just fiction and we’re all just here to enjoy a story we love.

I…know that’s a lot, but Ihope it was at least helpful information! Ithink in the end the most important part is just to be critical andremain open-minded. Never stop learning. Choose your battles. Write about what you love.And don’t worry so much about being wrong.

I know we are legally responsible for him until he turns 18 which isn't too much longer BUT he is getting worse with everything, my husband has given up on him and just lets him come and go as he pleases and do what he wants (he claims he will kick him out on his bday but no one believes him b/c of many past threats not followed through and his kids know it so they continue to play him), I'm told to stay out of it because he isn't my son yet he is still on MY insurance and driving his mom's car while drinking and smoking pot and continuing not to follow the law with his restrictions either. staringtowardthestars: There were (and still are) many people who found it so improbable that she would have actually kidnapped me that they were convinced I had played some role. She helped to ensure that the judge who heard my case was likely to be sympathetic.

staringtowardthestars: Most random red four-year-olds don't kidnap graduate students for no reason, and if they were going to do something like that one would expect them to have taken me back to the red district, which was not where we were found. Also, I was relatively liberal on red issues, which made people think it more likely that I would associate with her in public.

The police investigators should have been able to use my computer history to determine whether I had coordinated with her, but the investigator who was supposed to be in charge of it broke it so badly that no information could be recovered.

If one of her friends had suggested it, even as a joke, she probably would have complied. All the evidence suggested that she wasn't especially intelligent, even given the typical red IQ.

Of course, I could be wrong about her reasons.

Misconceptions: PT. 4 - Coat of Arms

Hello, hello folks! I know it has been awhile since I have done a Misconceptions post, but lately I have been inspired with recent historical research and as always wanted to share some interesting, overlooked things with you all.

In addition, here are the links to the other Misconceptions with a brief mention of subject matter.

Now, without further delay let us act like the Knights we so desperately want to be, and charge into this interesting subject of the Coat of Arms!

1. Where does the term come from?

Well, I am glad you asked mystical person! There are many theories, especially on the region you are studying, but the one that I have seen the majority of the time and makes sense to -me- which doesn't necessarily make it right... Is the idea that originally before battles, Tribes, Armies, Factions, etc would decorate and paint their shields before battle. We can see this anywhere from Biblical times and regions, to Greece, to Celtic lands, Roman lands, and beyond. It was traditional for people to draw intimidating, religious, generally important, historical, or sometimes even silly things on their shields that they'd be exposing to the enemy on the battlefield.

Why? Well, various reasons. Religious symbols could be painted to offer the warrior strength, protection, or other ideas of miracles and blessings. While some would draw demons and such, all in the purpose to scare the enemy or seem intimidating.

Long story short, it wouldn't be long before shields were used as a means of identifying others on the battlefield and used to judge how the battle was going. For example: "Oh no, John was three lines behind the front line and I can see his shield in the front, that would imply we are being pushed back on that flank! Go rally on the guy with a big demon on his shield!"

Ah! Suddenly it might begin to click for you - that is right. Over time, we took these symbols from the shields and placed them on gabesons or tabards to cover the front of our armor, rather than the shield. With our symbols and colors on the front and back, it could easily identify friend from foe. More over, we also get the full term of the word.

A shield was considered a weapon, an arm. The tabard acts as a coat that goes over your armor, therefor you now have a coat of your arm's colors and symbols; a coat of arms.

(Please note, this is only one origin story - but perhaps, the most common and widely expressed by historians.)

2. Okay, great - I learned some fancy history. What now?

Ah, another excellent question! Thanks for asking! A fair question at that... what does one do with this knowledge? Well, there are a few things I can recommend for some fun times, greater immersion and added roleplay potential!

First, if you are a Knight or Soldier, even a Mercenary - it would not be unlikely for you to see the coat of arms all around you on a battlefield or even just within a city. Let us say that Tom and John are both unrelated Knights, each unknowing of the other. They are simply fighting in the same battle, on completely different flanks.

The battle begins and all is going well, except suddenly the horns are heard in the backfield and John's commander tells him to go to the opposite flank and help Sir Tom, who is wearing a red coat of arms with a sword on it. Alright, good so John does just that and brings his troops over to help Sir Tom who is easily identified by his coat.

Long story short, lets skip a year into the future to Stormwind. John sees a familiar coat of arms, and approaches - indeed, it is Sir Tom, the two talk about the battle, share a beer, and become great friends.

What is my point here? Tabards are like wearing an ID all over you for everyone to see! It is invitation for others to approach you and say "hey, I saw you at the Siege of Orgrimmar!" Now, will that happen a lot? I have no idea - but at the very least, you can use it yourself as a clear and easy opening to introduce yourself to another warrior type, rather than potentially awkwardly jumping in.

Second, you can a cool ass custom coat of arms! There are lots of websites and artist that can make fancy ass family crest (Essentially more elaborate coat of arms), and such. You can put it on a website such as Tumblr, use it as your banner, provide a link to it on your TRP3 profile - and then you'll be remembered as that cool guy with an awesome custom coat of arms.

3. You mentioned a Family Crest, what is the difference?

Ah, awesome question - thank you! I usually explain it as follows: a coat of arms is like wearing a name tag at work. People know your name, maybe your position, and likely know where you work. Great for at a glance information which is important in battles and such, not so great for details.

A family crest on the other hand is like your license, or social security card. It is more private, but if you give it to someone they can find out a lot more about you. The colors represent specific things, the shapes, the items, the way they are arranged, they tell the history of you and your family. It is much more personal, much more elaborate - at least that is my take on it.

Parvo in this contest refers to canine parvovirus, a horrendous disease of dogs which is very persistent in the environment but generally well prevented by vaccination. You can read more about it here.

Anonymous asked: Do dogs need to be bathed? I live in a rural area so a lot of people here only give a dog a bath when it's gotten in to something? Is bathing frequently vs infrequently vs never a big issue?

Unless you are targeting a particular skin condition and using a medicated or therapeutic shampoo, most dogs don’t require a bath more than once a week, however many will go months or years without a bath with no problem. Grooming should still be done, because long coats can matt very easily and cause pain, but it’s not strictly necessary that every dog receive a regular bath.

Another Anonymous asked: Why do dogs shake/tap their feet when you scratch them in the right spot

Generally it’s a reflex. However if you already have itchy skin (often infected) and you start rubbing, you make the itch worse and the dog is compelled to scratch.

Yet another anonymous asked: We have an almost two year old female great dane (just over 1 year and 8 months) who is on the small side. She only weighs about 125 pounds and stands about 3 feet at the shoulder. She is my moms pride and joy but she refuses to get her spayed until she is 3 years old. I've read varying info about spaying giant breeds too early or too late. What is the general age a smallish Dane should be fixed? We have never had a giant breed before. Question tax, came for the stories, stayed for the knowlage

While I won’t give specific advice about any animal I cannot examine, at 3 years of age there will be no protective benefit for mammary cancer, though it will still prevent pyometra. Generally for a large, short-lived breed I would spay around skeletal maturity. There is a discussion here, and many of the reblogs are worth reading too.

I would generally use a feline laxative, but raw egg, fish oil and ferretone are probably not doing any harm. There’s not a lot written about this in ferret textbooks, but it does not get as cold down here so perhaps our ferrets are less fluffy. I would avoid vaseline because I generally avoid oil based products for animals, and I would avoid pumpkin because I don’t want to add that much fiber to the short gut of a possessed sock puppet ferret.

Boxers are colloquially known in the veterinary community as ‘cancer factories’. They just get cancer very easily and very young. In particular they often get Mast Cell Tumors, which are sneaky bastards that can look like anything, and can easily be mistaken for a benign cyst or lipoma. The paranoia is sometimes too much to bear, so it’s not unreasonable to remove every vaguely suspicious lump of a boxer when they’re on the younger side and still have a good heart.

Generally I think they’re treated a bit too much like toys and not allowed to be dogs by certain owners, particularly the smaller ones that are easier to carry everywhere. Which is a shame because there’s a real, proper dog under all that frou frou if you avoid turning it into a nervous wreck.

I can only hazard a guess, but I suspect one or both dogs are probably a mix, and I would suspect the larger one. Lots of dogs that are small and fluffy enough just get sold as ‘maltese’ through pet stores because that’s popular.

It’s very rare for me to see a budgie in normal hours because there’s a clinic with a better bird set up nearby, and most people are unwilling to pay the after hours fee for a budgie. They are likely getting enough vitamins from the green leafy vegetables so I wouldn’t worry about the fruit, and as long as they are eating the pellets and not starving themselves I wouldn’t stress too much.

It would be off label use and potentially ineffective. I don’t know of any documented mouse rabies infection that occurred naturally, though I understand it can occur in laboratory conditions. To catch rabies a mammal basically needs to be bitten by an infected animal and survive the bite. The odds of a mouse receiving a deep enough puncture wound and surviving long enough to catch rabies is fairly low.

Depends why the dog is obsessively tail chasing, and I can’t comment specifically on an animal I cannot examine. They may fixate on the stump, they may not be chasing the tail, just running in circles, or there may be a painful neuroma in the tail causing the behavior. There may also be a brain abnormality responsible for the behavior, or a genuine obsessive disorder that would be better treated with medication.

I’m not sure which country you’re in, but Australian Ravens are the most common ‘crow’ here, and they are mostly carnivorous. Feeding dog food is probably not that bad a balance. Lots of people feed cheap beef mince which is too fatty and deficient in vitamins, causing nutrient deficiency in young birds. You can reduce this by using a low fat mince and mixing it with a insectivore bird rearing mix.

However, it’s generally inadvisable to feed wildlife as it makes them dependent on human support for survival and will change both their behavior and the local ecology. If you’re going to do it anyway I’d rather they be fed something that’s good for them, but question why you feel that wild animals need to be fed in the first place.

They’re reasonably common on the feet, between the toes, of prickly coated dogs like staffordshire bull terriers and shar peis. They can get infected and be uncomfortable, but sometimes don’t bother the dogs at all. It’s odd to have symmetrical patches in a place where the skin isn’t rubbed a lot. It might be dysplasia (which is pretty harmless) instead of ingrown hairs, but if they’re not malignant, not a symptom of metabolic disease and not bothering the dog then it’s of low concern.

The last think anyone wants is a kid getting bitten.

And finally another Anonymous asked: Do you enjoy running this blog? I was looking at some of your super old post and feel kind of bad that this was supposed to be an escape but kind of became your job.

I have spend a long time avoiding answering this question because I wasn’t totally sure of the answer. I enjoy some parts of this blog, the interesting questions and discussions it generates. I love it when something is drawn based on something I wrote, whether it’s a throwaway comment or a story or a fantasy biology creature.

But I don’t like being treated like a personal Google. I don’t mind clarifying an answer, or discussing a complex topic, but when a question could have very easily been answered b a single, quick Google search it just feel a little...disrespectful I guess. I spend a lot of time on this blog. I’m not keeping up with the questions I get already. I spend even more time in my jobs and I would really, really like to get back to more fiction writing in addition to all the other life stuff I’ve got going on, so it’s really difficult not to be snarky at some of these questions.

But I do like the community. I like what gets created. So I take the good along with the bad.

I adore my Patreon supporters, but this blog doesn’t pay anything like my real jobs. If it did then I could afford to work a few days less per month to write more.

Summary: It’s hard to be a single parent and find dates. And he especially did not think it would work out after his daughter forces herself on his date with this great guy he has found online. But maybe five year olds can be great matchmakers.

A/N to sleepyboylester: Hello. I just wanted to say I really hope you like it and that you have a great year ahead! ^_^

Tags/Warnings: Fluff, AU, Single parent, Just a teeny bit of angst. Word Count: 4.2k (I really did not think this would happen) (P.S. There are some sentences which are first person which are meant to be in italics but tumblr has formatting issues, so fair warning, but hopefully it’ll be right.)

“Bailey that’s it!” Phil screamed the ultimatum at his five year old.

Bailey stopped throwing her toys at her dad and started to cry.

Phil sighed. Of course, with all my great luck, Bailey had to choose today to throw a tantrum.

Today was a kind of special day for Phil because after about seven failed attempts at dating, since his marriage broke three years ago, he really wanted this one to work out. Not that I’m keeping a count. He had been chatting with this guy since a month after finding him on one of those dating apps that his friends set him up on forcefully. He did mention on his profile he was a single dad with a five year old, who had a particular talent for throwing things she did not like, or liked, but was in a tantrum phase, as far as she could. Phil sometimes seriously wondered if he could put her in a training program for long distance discus or javelin throwing at a young age.

Phil hadn’t been the luckiest guy when it came to love. He thought he loved his ex-wife a lot and ended up separating from her, three years after their marriage. He thought he loved his high-school sweetheart, but that relationship ended when the guy he loved cheated on him. He thought all of his previous dates and short-term relationships weren’t that bad. But none of them stuck around.

Yet there was something about tonight’s date that made Phil want to pray for it to really work out. He had a lot in common with this guy. From being bisexual, to having similar taste in movies and music and similar opinions. This guy was sarcastic and witty and made him laugh through all his messages. And he genuinely seemed interested in him and even asked him questions about his daughter. Just for that reason alone, Phil wished Bailey would be nice just for tonight and let him enjoy his date.

He picked Bailey up and tried to calm her down. But she wasn’t having any of it. She was annoyed that her Dad decided to cancel their play date night with her friends to the local pool, because he had to go on a ‘grown-up date’.

“Bailey, love, please listen to me. If Bailey can have dates with her friends, then sometimes doesn’t daddy deserve dates with his friends?” Phil asked her pleadingly.

But she shook her head, still wailing loudly.

“Look Bailey, Daddy is going on a date with his friend and your favourite babysitter, Caroline is coming over in half an hour. Daddy has to get ready and he wants you to behave and be the good girl you are. If Caroline tells me you’ve been a good girl, I’ll get you some ice cream and we can ask your friends to reschedule for tomorrow. Okay?” This time he said sternly, because Phil had learned the ways of parenthood, and sometimes you have to be stern.

Bailey’s cries turned into tiny sobs. But she didn’t let the collar of Phil’s shirt go when he tried to put her down.

“Bells, please?”

She let go and let her dad collect all her toys and tuck her in her room with her drawing books and colours.

Phil was finally able to get ready. Just as he was putting on his shoes, the doorbell rang. He quickly tied his laces and opened the door. His heart was beating at an abnormally fast rate. It was a new experience for him. He has been quite familiar with the social media and online communities, but dating apps were not really his thing. He didn’t really think they were anybody’s thing, except really horny teenagers. But it turned out, he did find a few matches, and one of them stuck out. And he was here on his doorstep.

It’s okay Phil, you’ll do fine.

Just as he opened the door, Bailey came out of her room as well.

“Hello!” Caroline said brightly. Phil’s heartbeat returned to normal. He let her in with a grateful smile. Not him.

“She’s very moody today. I cancelled her play date to go for mine, well not a play date but like a normal adult date,” Phil whispered to her.

Caroline nodded and said, “Don’t worry, I’ve got her. Go enjoy your adult date.”

The young twenty-something purple haired girl was an absolute blessing. She was really good with kids and Bailey seemed really comfortable with her, always asking for her to come around and play. But today Bailey didn’t even want to be with her friend.

Bailey glared at both the adults and stamped her feet. “I’m not moody, you’re bad daddy!”

Caroline and Phil shared a look and Caroline approached Bailey. Just as she was about to pick her up, the doorbell rang again.

Phil didn’t even have time to feel nervous. He was already tired with Bailey.

“Hello?” Dan said brightly.

The sight took away Phil’s breath for a moment. He’s better than the pictures! Dan stood in a black and red plaid shirt with stars around his collar, a small pixel bow tie (oh my god that’s so cute!), black skinny jeans, a black coat in his hands and a nervous but dimpled smile.

“Hi?” Phil replied back just as nervously. He felt a bit underdressed. He was wearing a black jumper with a triceratops on it, which Bailey had help him choose. But he reasoned with himself, that he was allowed to dress comfortably because he was a nearly thirty single dad.

“You look lovely,” Dan said, with a smile that got a little less nervous

“Thanks. I mean you too,” Phil said, surprised the beautiful man in front of him found him lovely.

“Come on Bailey, let’s go inside,” Caroline said to the five year old, picking her up in her arms.

“No! No! No!” She managed to get out of Caroline’s arms and run over to the door. “I hate you!” She said to Dan before crying and running off to her room, slamming her door on the way. Caroline ran after her.

“I’m sorry! I’m so so sorry. She’s been really moody today. She’s not usually like this,” Phil said to a shocked looking Dan.

“Umm it’s okay? Why is she- I mean if I may ask?” Dan asked.

Phil sighed and asked him to come in and be seated. He offered him some water, before starting, “I cancelled her play date with her friends to the pool, so I could go on mine.”

“Oh well, that’s understandable. I’d be pretty upset too if my dad cancelled a pool trip! I’m alright if you want to reschedule or something?” Dan said, offering an understanding smile.

“No, no. She’d be fine by tomorrow. She needs to understand that you can’t throw tantrums every time a thing doesn’t go your way.”

“But I feel bad,” Dan said.

“Don’t be. Dad’s allowed to live sometimes too. Shall we get going?” Phil asked getting up and grabbing his phone and wallet.

“Umm sure,” Dan said. But he could still not bring himself to move, as the wails from inside the room continued.

Phil sighed again.

“Can I talk to her?” Dan asked.

Phil shrugged and said, “Good luck.”

He knocked on Bailey’s door before opening it. He found the older woman trying to console the five year old, unsuccessfully.

“Hey Bailey, right? I’m Dan. I don’t think we got a chance to meet properly. Let’s shake hands, shall we?” Dan asked her sweetly.

Bailey further pushed her face into her pillow, but stopped crying, not wanting the stranger to see her cry.

“I’m sorry your dad had to cancel your play time because of me. Hey would you like to come with us instead? We’re going to this nice Italian place. I’m sure they’ll have your favourite pizza. What do you say?”

Phil’s eyes widened at his suggestion. He was standing by the door and watching the scene. He can’t be serious. This will be a disaster. But he also had to admit Dan was being super nice.

“I hate pizza!” Bailey screamed.

“You didn’t seem to last night,” Phil noted.

“Go away dad!”

“Okay, okay, what if we go to a Chinese place? Do you like noodles?” Dan asked her.

Bailey finally turned to look at Dan and nodded.

“Alright then. We’ll grab some Chinese then. Do you have a favourite restaurant?”

She nodded excitedly, wiping away the tears from her face and sat up. “There’s this place dad takes me. They always give me a dragon shaped lollipop in the end. And they’ve got these fire lanterns!”

Dan looked at Phil expectantly.

“It’s just The Fortune Tree, by the corner of the street.”

“It’s settled then. Why don’t you get ready Bailey?” Dan said stroking her hair.

The gesture melted Phil’s heart, just a little bit.

She got up and asked Caroline to do her hair. Dan, led by Phil walked back to the lounge.

“I’m sorry. I really am. I understand if you want to leave,” Phil said, not meeting Dan’s eyes.

“Phil relax. I know you have a child and I know it can be tough to be a single parent. So relax. We can go to this Chinese place, have a good time with Bailey and well if it goes bad, then it does,” Dan said with a shrug.

“You’ve invited the monster along. You really sure?”

“Yes Phil. I would not have asked if I wasn’t.”

“Fine then…”

It took Bailey another five minutes to get dressed, whilst Phil showed Dan around his house.

“Your house is so…homey, you know? All these little toys and cute pillows and photos of the two of you all over. I especially love those box sets I see there,” Dan said point out to a bookshelf, decorated with numerous box sets and a few board games.

“Maybe someday you can come over and we can have a marathon or something if you want?”

“I’d like that.” Dan had felt a little warmth spread through his cheeks.

Once Bailey was ready in a blue frock and mismatched socks, like her father, her blonde hair tied in a French braid, falling up to her waist, Phil thanked Caroline for coming all the way and helping out. He paid her the full amount, before bidding her goodbye. He put Bailey in her yellow coat printed with pugs all over and grabbed his own grey coat as well.

“Shall we?” Dan asked holding out his hand to Bailey.

She nodded but looked at her dad , who nodded, and only then did she hold the still stranger’s hand.

Phil held Bailey’s other hand as they walked to the restaurant. Dan kept asking Bailey questions about her school and her friends and Bailey answered them, at first with slight hesitation, but then she started talking like her usual self, and asking Dan questions right back.

“We’re here! Do you see it?” She asked Dan.

“Yes I do. It looks like a wonderful place!” Dan told her.

She smiled to herself and ran ahead. Phil and she were regulars at the place and hostesses recognised her and let her in, welcoming her by her name and finding her a seat. Phil and Dan slowly walked behind.

“Still not too late. I would not be surprised honestly,” Phil said to Dan.

“Silly Phil. Come on, let’s eat, I’m starving!” Dan said, shaking his head.

They ordered food for themselves and Phil ordered Bailey a meal from the kids menu. They drank some wine, which Bailey insisted she wanted to try as well. So Phil ordered some apple juice for her, which was the closest coloured drink he could think of.

“So Dan, how is it like working for BBC? It must be fun. I’ve seen their Twitter and I can pretty much pick out the ones you’ve tweeted.” Phil said, trying to find a safe topic to talk about. Work is a safe topic, right?

“Oh yeah. It’s good fun, pays good, and I get to spend all my time on social media and be my witty sarcastic unapologetic self. Being a social media handler for a company is the best job. I’m sorry your teaching job just doesn’t beat it,” Dan said.

“Oh believe me anything’s more interesting than teaching English to a bunch of middle schoolers. Oh I don’t ever want to be fourteen again.”

“But Dad has done more than teaching. He was in an ad once and even a movie! Tell him dad,” Bailey said sipping on her apple juice and offering her input into the adults conversation.

“Was he? Which movie Phil and what ad?”

“Dad give me your phone. I’ll show Dan,” Bailey said extending her hand.

“Oh I’m sure Dan does not want to see it Bells,” Phil said.

“Oh I’m more than interested Phil. Here take my phone Bailey,” Dan smirked and winked at him handing Bailey his phone.

I’m a goner.

Bailey showed him the embarrassing advert from like eight years ago, where he had really long hair. She showed him his ridiculous look from the movie he was in for like fifteen seconds and other few videos Phil had shot back in the day, with a bunch of his friends, all looking emo and horrendous, in his opinion. I should’ve never showed Bailey those. Why are they still on the internet even?

Dan laughed at them, but his right hand slowly made his way across the table to hold Phil’s and squeeze it tight. Phil smiled back and shook his, joining in and showing Dan more of his embarrassing pictures from his old MySpace days and telling him stories from his childhood, that he wasn’t sure we’re a first-date-shareable thing.

Well here go all my chances of a second date. But at least he looks happy and is enjoying himself.

He was surprised when Dan told them some embarrassing stories about himself too.

“I’m telling you, I am the most awkward person. I win that title,” Dan said, just as they finished their dessert.

“How can you beat my tea-people incident?” Phil asked.

“No but I-”

“Dad wins it. Did you forget the time, that girl you went on a date last time? You dropped food on that girl’s white dress. And then you came home with her and let her borrow your favourite shirt but then never showed up back again, your picked your call?” Bailey said.

Well if it wasn’t already such a gigantic failure, then it now is, the final nail in the coffin. Thank you daughter.

“Yes that was the most awkward moment of my life. Thank you Bailey for that,” Phil said with gritted teeth.

“No problem dad!” Bailey said happily, looking for the waitress to get her dragon shaped lollipop.

Dan laughed really loudly, attracting attention from a few surrounding tables. “I’m sorry. But this one is really funny Phil. She isn’t the best wingman, is she?” Dan asked flitting his eyes to Bailey.

“The worst,” Phil concurred.

“Aww. I think she’s great. I think this date would’ve been more awkward if not for her. She got it all out of the way really soon. Don’t worry I’ve had my fair share of bad dates too. Maybe I can tell you about them the next time we meet?” Dan asked, holding Phil’s hand again.

“You’d still like that?” Phil asked, surprised.

“Of course. I already told you that,” Dan winked at him and Phil felt his heart skip a beat.

Their server got them fortune cookies and Bailey, a lollipop at the end of their meal.

“What does yours say?” Phil asked Dan excitedly. This wasn’t like a usual fortune cookie.

“Err- Shame on you for thinking a cookie is psychic. Man way to give me an existential crisis! What does yours say?” Dan said running his hand through his hair, his fringe turning into a quiff just a bit. And Phil found that insanely hot.

“You will be hungry again in one hour. Well, it’s probably true,” Phil said with a little laugh. Dan laughed as well, finding Phil’s tongue-poking-out-from-the-corner-of-his-mouth-laugh really adorable, while Bailey happily ignored them for her sweet.

When the bill came, Dan tried to pay, but Phil was quick on his heels and ready with his card.

“You didn’t have to do that, you know?” Dan said.

“I know, but I’d feel better if I did, especially after this little monster came along and changed all our plans,” Phil said jokingly. He bent over to his side and planted a kiss on Bailey’s forehead.

She is a monster. But she my monster.

After paying their bill, they started walking back home, when Bailey started pleading for an ice cream.

“We just had that cake Bells. We can’t have ice cream now,” Phil reminded her.

“Please dad! You promised if I was a good girl you’d get me ice cream. I was on my best behaviour, wasn’t I Dan?” She asked pulling Dan’s hand.

Dan’s eyes widened and he looked at Phil, “Umm yeah.”

“That was if you had stayed home with Caroline, but you cried and created a fuss. Come on we’ll have some tomorrow,” Phil said to her.

“Please dad?” She asked with a pout.

And Dan melted. He picked the little girl up and looked at her blue eyes, which he realised were so much like Phil’s.

“Come on Phil. Even I feel like some ice cream,” He said.

Phil shook his head while Bailey gave Dan the biggest smile. Phil gave in and they walked to the nearest ice cream shop, which was twenty minutes away, with Bailey gladly holding Dan’s hand over her dad’s.

“One mint chocolate chip please,” she said to the server, who could not see her.

Phil picked her up and let her give her order.

“What would you like Dan?” Bailey asked him.

“Err I guess I’ll take one cookies and cream. What about you Phil?” Dan asked scanning his options.

“Umm can I have one caramel and nuts?” Phil masked the server who served them three ice cream cones with their flavours.

Dan insisted on paying this time and they sat on the tiny chairs in the shop, having ice cream. Phil could see other families around him and a young couple just outside the shop, sharing an ice cream. He remembered the last time he was here with someone else other than Bailey was four years ago, when things were still fine between him and his ex-wife. They had made Bailey taste ice cream for the first time then. He couldn’t help but want that again, not the ex-wife, but a significant other, with whom he could share his ice cream as well as they watched Bailey feed herself and all of her face and clothes.

“What’re you thinking?” Dan asked, seeing how wistfully Phil watched the people around them.

“What I’m going to have for my second dinner,” He replied.

Dan smiled. He knew it wasn’t true but said nothing.

By the time they finished their ice creams, Bailey was really sleepy. She caught onto Phil’s leg and refused to move forward on her own. Phil sighed and picked her up. She immediately fell asleep on her dad’s shoulder.

“Well it’s been a tiring day for her. Too much waterworks today,” Phil told Dan as they started walking back to Phil’s place. Dan wanted to drop Phil off.

“She is very smart,” Dan commented.

“And quite a handful. But it’s worth it. Seeing her grow up has been the most wonderful journey. Everything, right from her first time rolling over to the first time she came first in dictation competition in school, it all makes me so proud. I’m ranting. Sorry today became so much about her and not us.”

“It’s alright Phil. I did really have a great time. When I started this whole online dating thing, I didn’t really think I was gonna meet some great guy. I had a lot of horrible dates before. I mean a whole lot. And I was about to give up when I saw a young dad whose profile seemed so…genuine. It turned out we had a lot in common and I guess it true what they say, there is something very hot about a young dad.”

“I hope you don’t have a daddy kink because that would be really weird,” Phil said with a giggle.

Dan laughed. “No, no! No daddy links at all. She is surely asleep right? We should not scar her,” Dan said looking at Bailey.

“Don’t worry. She can sleep through a werewolf apocalypse.”

“Can I- I mean if you want I can carry her? You must be tired…” Dan asked nervously. He wondered if it was the appropriate thing to do.

Phil looked at Dan for a long second, before pausing and handing her over to Dan’s untrained hands. Dan held onto her tightly, worried he’d drop her.

“You can relax a bit. You won’t drop her, this comes from the clumsiest person who did not hold her for a whole week thinking he’d drop her.”

“Did you ever?”

“Nah. It’s different, you know? Like phone or glass or whatever else you ever drop is not precious, but she is. And just somehow I never did, knowing that I just couldn’t ever hurt her.”

Dan thought about it for a moment as they started walking. “What if she actually hates me and does not want me around? Would you not go out with me?” He asked Phil.

“Quite a heavy topic for a first date, eh?” Phil said lightly, trying not to breach the topic, but when Dan did not reply, he said, “I would not. There will never be a day I don’t choose her. She is my everything. Even when she is all moody. I really fought for her in court. All tears and soul, laid it all out in front of the court, the judge, just for her. Does that answer your question?”

Dan nodded and smiled, “It does. You’re a great dad Phil.”

Phil smiled back, wondering what prompted Dan to ask the question in the first place. He really hoped it was the answer Dan wanted because he really liked Dan. He looked back at him who now seemed to be struggling with the twenty kilogram weight his arms.

“Want me to take her back? It takes some time to get used to the weight.”

“Nah. I…I think I’d like to get used to the weight. I want to stay around, if you’d want to? And of course if she’d want me to?”

Phil stopped in his tracks and looked at Dan properly this time. He searched his brown eyes to see if he was lying or making fun of him, but all he saw was Dan’s same nervous but dimpled smile, the first time he had said hello, and suddenly he was reminded of a Taylor Swift song and how it didn’t seem all that shitty to him.

“Too fast?” Dan asked, ready to laugh it off, hand Bailey back to Phil and run to the other side of the world.

In answer Phil went on his toes and kissed Dan’s lips softly. Dan was taken by surprise for a mini-second, but kissed back happily and carefully, not wanting to disturb Bailey lying on his shoulder. A part of Dan’s brain wondered if this was what if felt like being a parent- constantly being worried about your child?

“Do you want to- umm come back home and watch one of those movies with me? I mean I understand if you want to go back home. You must be tired and you must have to wake up early for work and-”

Dan put a finger on Phil’s lips. “Have you learnt nothing about me in the past month? When have I ever slept before 3 in the morning and actually reached on time for work? I’d like to watch a movie. Only if I can choose it though!”

Phil smiled and kissed Dan once again.

“Sure.”

There were a lot of things Phil was worried about. About how the second date might be a disaster or the third or the twentieth or the ninety-ninth one, or how Bailey would suddenly decide she did not like Dan, or about what people would say. But for now Phil pushed those thoughts to the back of his head, as he walked holding Dan’s hand, who held onto his daughter, back home where they were going to have a movie night and the first of December’s snow fell slowly onto them and the ground, turning it all white and beautiful slowly.

It’s going to be a great Christmas and a good New Year.

And maybe five year olds can be great matchmakers, he thought, glancing at his daughter.
