you're, in my opinion, partially right about the performative activism stuff

my fascination with her started with my trying to learn more about the music industry so i was reading a book by an entertainment lawyer that's supposedly the best in the biz

turns out it was her lawyer and so i dove into learning more abt the industry through what she does and doesn't do

currently my most fun example to share with people is how she "dated" calvin harris because she wanted to work her way into the edm side of the industry to change up her genre and she needed those producers (in quotes because most public relationships tend to be contractual from what ive learned so far and a few years prior he'd publicly stated he'd never be even interested in dating her because she's so far from his type)

but most of the producers don't like bullshit so the contract they had started grating calvin and he decided to be chaotic to figure out a way out of it

they were supposed to release music together, she'd written the lyrics to this is what you came for under a pseudonym and it was kept secret, he did the production and had rihanna as a vocalist. he started being chaotic so when they ended she told everyone she was the writer even though he had said they were too different to work together. anyway, the bs that ensued made it so she'd get blacklisted from the edm producers, because ppl talk of course, and like i said, most of them don't like bs. in fact, once her owning her masters narrative came along after they were bought, i found out like 90% of the big edm producers i follow on ig are following the guy who bought her masters and not her. that's how blacklisted she is.

nevertheless she still switched genres with folklore and evermore and a new producer, one that's not associated with the edm industry. meanwhile, dua lipa managed to do what taylor failed at, and she started off the same way - "dating" an edm producer, in her case, martin garrix. i think it was around the same time too, if i remember correctly.

anyway the latest business stuff is how swift's merch is pretty terrible, but it's not her team that's in charge of it like it was when she was signed with her old label. now it's under republic records, and their merch team and the fact that the merch is bad goes to show what she thinks of that label too imo, which is not a high opinion. instead of speaking out publicly, she tends to let other things do the speaking for her. other recent stuff includes the private scuffle with olivia rodrigo but that's too long to get into and this ask is already long enough.

The way we played hot seat was either part of a larger drinking game when a certain card was pulled from a deck, or just on it's own. You sit in a circle, everyone has a drink, usually a beer or cider. In the card pull version, the one who pulls the card gets asked a question by every person playing and if they refuse to answer they drink from their drink. In the standalone, you do that but everyone gets a turn being asked until people get bored and leave. Fun way to find out shit about people. Usually the unwritten rule is that you can't lie. I imagine everyone sitting on shitty chouches and chairs in a semi circle around a table full of cups and bottles playing it

Pierre: good fashion and music taste, shirt is gone halfway through the night, also fuckboy but wholesome, actually studies, plays a sport for sure probably soccer in some way either club or Division he's too good for rec, will hold your hair back so you can throw up, will tell you your outfit sucks, good at math, also part of the squad that games, econ major, workout buddies with reader anday have taken a math class together

Max: is part of the hockey team he will go pro, also actually studies, got into gaming because of Charles, has the nicest car, is serious until he gets a couple drinks in him, he and Daniel are close and roomed together at some point, owns like 30 sets of the same outfit a white tee and jeans, knows reader through Dan and they get dragged by him to some of the same stuff

Lando: is a pledge or new member his big is Carlos, undeclared major, just happy to be here, gaming squad, used to play lacrosse or something equally obscure, king of knowing where the good snacks are, weirdly good at beer pong, growing into a fuckboy wholesomeness level tbd, probably sweet with reader as she helped him through a blackout or something, met her because she's basically house mom for some of the new boys (the kind of mom who will teach you to do laundry or iron ONCE)

Carlos: hockey flow but does not play hockey, actually studies and is smarter than what people give him credit for, came from a private high school and uni really opened his horizons, also good study buddy, gets along with most people, goes to office hours the most out of the actually studies gang, fun at parties, owns the frat dogs, he and reader met at Office hours (they were the only students) and found they had mutual friends too

Lewis: is/was president of frat, great grades greater bod, did full evolution from fuckboy to good man, has the back tests and the moral support, up for late noght talks about life, definitely was a D1 athlete, best fashion game, implemented no hazing policy, fits into notable alum or PhD category

Let’s Clear Up Some Misunderstandings about ZackRay, SHALL WE?

Yes, I think we shall......due to all this idiotic discourse going on here.

*Note: I cannot speak for ALL ZackRays but I do believe from my interaction with many of them, they have similar feels. What I’m posting here however? This is coming from my own personal feelings.

1. “Shipping ZackRay means you support pedophilia.”

A: F*CKING NOPE....first of all, let’s get into what “shipping ZackRay” means, for me, okay....

Yes, I ship ZackRay. I referred to it as a Platonic Until Legal Love”. Which seemed to give people the misconception that “it’s waiting for a child to turn 18 so they can consent to sex”.

THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT.

Perhaps that was a very poor choice of words. Ugh. So let me explain in more detail:

I feel that Zack’s feelings for Rachael will remain platonic until she grows older and then it is possible for romantic feelings to be slowly realized over time.

Because let’s get one thing straight; I don’t think we can deny:

Issac Foster is not able to recognize what love actually is, even by the end of the series. Nobody has taught him this. He’s not emotionally mature enough to understand it. Yes, I think he feels it towards Ray subconsciously. He feels something. He knows he cares for her in a “I would be glad if you did not die/ I don’t think I can live without you” kind of way. But he hasn’t thought of it outside of that. Therefore, if he is not aware of a romantic attachment, he can’t really act on it, which cancels out (God forbid) any type of sexual feelings he would have towards her. Which cancels out “waiting until she’s legal”. Which I agree, is messed up. Ick. Btw I hate Usagi Drop’s ending. A lot.

So if you’re under the impression that I’m expecting Zack and Ray to suddenly start making out right after the last scene, uh NOPE, I’m not. What I ship...(what a lot of people ship) are those possibilities far....FAR....into the future where Zack eventually understands that Ray is the only person he wants to be with....for the rest of his life. Period. And what exactly is wrong with two consenting adults agreeing to be with each other? That’s right.

It’s not wrong just because he knew her when she was a young teenager. He was not looking at her in that way. She was simply important to him as a person. And if she were to try to kiss him or something while she was young, his response would likely be “WTF ARE U DOIN”. An appropriate one, yes. XD

I was ALSO referring to my own feelings when talking about PULL. In other words, I don’t really approve of sexual ZackRay content unless she is portrayed as an adult. Mmkay....moving on.

Don’t call people out on social media posts. Don’t reblog their posts and publicly ridicule them. Don’t reblog their art and insult it. Don’t mention their names, don’t bully them, don’t TRY TO GET OTHERS TO BULLY THEM. This is sick. This is just wrong. I have recently found out that kids under 18 do in fact ship ZackRay. Which means when you attack, stalk, and harass them on tumblr, YOU COULD BE EMOTIONALLY HURTING A CHILD. Ironic for all the antis going “PROTECT TEH CHILDREEEEENZ!” Yes, protect them from your toxic attitude, how about?

5. “ZackRay shippers create content that is harmful because pedos can use it to groom children.”

And the antis seem to be under the delusion that they are SUCH special snowflakes because they were groomed this way; no guess what, ZackRays are also humans (despite what you may think) and have fallen victim to the same shit. Also, news flash, anything can be used as a grooming tool. YES, ANYTHING. And there are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more harmful ships out there (THAT ARE CANON) than ZackRay. I’ve been an anime fan for a long ass time. You think I don’t know about all the lolicon kiddie porn? You think I don’t know about Boku No Pico? THAT’S the shit you should be worried about kids and pedos finding. Not that I think fiction is really going to increase child rape crimes. If someone is intent on harming a child, they will. Reading or seeing fanart online isn’t going to influence that. They have a psychological disorder, unnatural addiction, and a lack of morals. These issues are rooted far deeper than just seeing stuff online. Getting rid of that stuff will change literally nothing. The only way a pedophile can change is to get professional help. And schmucks ranting online about how fans shipping is bad is NOT professional help. It’s certainly a professional waste of time.

STOP.

Are you a psychiatrist? Are you an expert in dealing with rape victims? Have you examined this individual you are criticizing?

Then f*ck off. Every person is different. Every story is different. This is a stranger on the internet; who the f*ck are YOU to tell them “that coping method is unhealthy”? You don’t know their life story. You don’t know what works for them. Do you think everyone with anxiety copes with it the exact same way? Depression? Eating disorders? I happen to have an anxiety disorder, myself. Recently a friend of mine informed me that she was also diagnosed with one. I told her my symptoms and I told her what I did when I got an attack.

Guess what?

What she experiences and what I experience are as different as f*cking night and day. I was trying to be a helpful friend but it turns out I was not able to help her at all. I thought I could because I thought I was experienced. But I’m not. It was a real eye-opener.

So don’t generalize people that way. You know nothing about what they went through. Get off your f*cking high horse.

Conclusion: These six misconceptions were the most problematic ones I can think of. Now some Q and A:

Do you draw NSFW ZackRay?

No.

Will you reblog it?

No.

Do you write NSFW fanfics?

No. I’m really not into sexual stuff at all and would be terrible at writing it.

Do you support people who do?

People have the right to draw and write whatever tf they want. Censorship is bad. Just don’t harm anyone IRL. Please.

Where do you draw the line at romantic ZackRay content YOU draw, write, or reblog?

Cuddling, chaste kissing, hand-holding; absolutely nothing worse than what you’d see in a Disney movie. Romance-wise. I got nothing against Zack swearing like a sailor the way he always does. xD

Do you ship ZackRay because of their ages?

No, I ship them because of who they are as individuals and how they act when they are together.....you know, like a normal person.

The right to be forgotten, and the right to remember

Hi, all.

Sorry, a bit of a wall of text ahead. I flaired it as Venting instead of Discussion just for that :sweat smile:.

Please feel free to discuss. It's a rant in flavor, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Somewhat recently, I had an... incident. Long story short, there's a lot of stuff I forgot or barely remember. And a good bit of my digital archive is lost.

I'd been trying to find some fanfiction and fictionpress (somewhat unrelated) titles by looking for dialog lines or character names.

This field of public, unpublished amateur fiction has always been about two types and a spectrum in-between: a few "well known" works (to an extent, and usually only within relevant fandoms), and a sea of lesser known works with hardly any readers. They're also usually incomplete.

The closer the work is to the second type, the less likely that it had been talked about online. Basically, the only searchable record of its existence is the text itself.

Recently, there had been an exodus of sorts (? I can't find info; but it's hinted about a lot) from some popular platforms. Especially fanfiction.net and fictionpress.com. That means thousands of works have basically disappeared after having been public for a while, but with no other indirect records of them (discussions or mentions) elsewhere.

This didn't sit well with me for reasons I couldn't quite articulate. It feels wrong not to have at least a shard of the work remain. Maybe even just a stub?

And looking into it, the idea about how authors and readers interact and where works published publicly but still "owned" by the author stand legally has apparently not been tackled with much rigor yet. It's mostly an implicitly acknowledged set of "unwritten rules" in the wider community.

There's overwhelming sentiment of an author's absolute right to control of their works, and some sentiment to the readers' "right" (it hasn't been widely accepted yet, and is very much not treated as a right anywhere I looked) to retain access to works that had already been public at some point.

This is made muddy mostly by the legality of fanfiction. While for fictionpress-like platforms it's simply that the rules haven't been clearly written and communicated yet. It seems reasonable that an author of an original work can take it down. The simplest reason and legal motivation being they might want to start publishing it commercially.

But this is dancing around the point. That's all fine and dandy. But on the internet I believe we should still have something to say that such a work existed at some point. And I think it's a reasonable goal. Reasonable enough that authors may collectively agree on it if it were presented and executed honestly.

Something like: When deleting a published work, the header (name, description, and genres) and something like the first 10% of the work remain online for archival. With an upper limit of 5k words or something like that.

If you disagree with the sentiment of keeping traces of intellectual or artistic attempts on the internet for archival... Of this being an unwritten 'purpose' of the web, or at least something worthy of making into a purpose, this rant will seem rather silly to you.

Understand though that I don't mean to step on anyone's toes regarding IP rights or whatever. But if in their absolute forms these laws disallow any method of retaining memories of such IP on the web, then maybe we should try changing them just enough to allow this.

How to ROCK Being Laid Off (with free checklist!)

Most people will tell you that being laid off can be one of the most traumatic things to happen in our lives.  Our means of providing for ourselves, our family, our way of life is pulled out from under us in one fell swoop.  

We're usually left feeling powerless, angry, and like we're not worthy of ever getting a job again.  It's awful.

But what if it didn't have to be?  

What if, instead, we freaking ROCKED being laid off?  Like, fully mastered this thing and harnessed it for GOOD instead of EVIL?  (And, by evil I mean depressing, soul-sucking, existential dread)

If you've either been laid off recently or think your position is on the chopping block, read on.  This post, my friends, is for you. 

There are two areas to wrap our arms around: Your headspace and then your life logistics.  We'll handle your headspace first so you'll have the mental bandwidth to handle the life logistics stuff after.

YOUR HEADSPACE

If you're here because you've been laid off, I want to say one thing: THIS IS AMAZING!!  Seriously!  Congrat-u-freaking-lations!  You've been thrust into the new chapter of your career (and possibly life) and you are going to be making the most of it.  I know it.

It may be scary right now, but it is also filled with ALL the opportunities for something new and BETTER.  

So, repeat after me: Your life is so much bigger than your job.  It's just a small piece of the pie.  Honestly.

Getting into the right headspace is critical to rocking being laid off, and this is just the first step.  If you're feeling down in the dumps and just NOT into this laid-off-thing, what can you actually do to get through it?  Here's a brief list:

MEDITATION: Cultivate your headspace by calming it.  Meditating is an incredibly powerful tool to do so (if you've never done it before, here's a great book that will get you started). Start out small and build from there.  Pro-tip: the chatter in your head doesn't ever truly go away, so don't get discouraged!  Stick with it and create a little freedom in your mind.

BE OF SERVICE: The other thing you can do is help others, Be of service in some way.  We're absolutely surrounded by hundreds of overlapping communities: our town, our city, our friends, our family, our religious/spiritual community, our street, others who have been laid off, etc., etc.  What can you do to be in service to them?  What help do they need?  Be impeccable with your people and your word, and you'll realize soon there is a massive universe out there just begging for you and heaping praise and appreciation into your lap.  Go find it.

ACCEPT & FORGIVE: If you find yourself in a position where it feels more like a firing than a lay-off, it's easy to be angry and hurt.  Give yourself a specific amount of time (a few days to a week) to sit with those feelings without judgement.  Binge on Netflix, eat tubs of ice cream, rant, rave, and cry.  But once you hit that deadline, that's it: you're committed to moving forward.  Think about at least one person who you genuinely liked at your last job, and mentally wish them all the success in the world.  And, if you're able to, open that wish up for the entire company, knowing that this person's boat will rise with everyone else's.  And, finally, mentally forgive the company itself: you're committing to moving on and being bigger than any one position, and they did you a favor.  Now you can be.

NEXT STEPS: Once you're feeling up to it, take a moment and think to yourself: do you REALLY want your old job back?  I mean, sure, the money was nice (I hope), but do you really want to be doing what you were doing?  If you could be finally doing the thing you were dreaming about for years, could this be the opportunity you've needed to jump into it?  If a little voice is saying, "yes!", then do it!  Get your research pants on and find out everything you need to about it.  Talk to folks who do what you want to do and don't worry about being too forward or having awkward introductions: people WANT to help, even if they don't know you.  Will it require you to go back to school or get a certification?  Will you need a part-time job while you transition?  Figure it out and make a plan!

LIFE LOGISTICS

Now that we've gotten the headspace stuff out of the way, let's talk about the nuts and bolts of what you need to do after being laid off.  To be honest, there is a bit of headspace stuff here, too (gosh, this stuff can be intense!), but I promise you'll get through it.

KEEP IT TOGETHER: If you've just been laid off or you feel it's imminent, commit to managing your emotions.  Don't let them see you sweat, and promise yourself you will be calm, handle the situation with grace, and keep it together.  Being explosive or over-emotional may be difficult to avoid (although certainly understandable), but it will not do you any favors and may actually make the situation much worse.  You want to come out of this looking like a pro who is in charge of their own life (because, guess what: you really are).  It will give you a much more solid base for any necessary conversations you may need to have with your now-former employer.

MANAGE THE OPTICS: During or just after "The Conversation," get clear on how the company will refer to your leaving.  Will they be referring to it as a lay-off and not a firing?  Can a third option be created where you co-create an exit strategy that works for both of you?  I've worked with several colleagues where they were able to finish out an additional week to train others who would be picking up the slack, and in exchange it would be framed that they were leaving under their own volition and not a lay-off at all.  Others were able to continue to work for the company on a freelance basis, as-needed.  If there is trust, understanding, and a good relationship in place, there are a lot of options that could be discussed.  (You can see why keeping it together would serve you well in this sort of conversation).

LOOSE ENDS & PAPERWORK: Have vacation, sick-leave, stock options, expense reimbursements, sales commission, life insurance, etc.?  Will there be a severance package and unemployment benefits available?  Be 100% clear on how you will be paid out for all of these as soon as possible.  Same goes for your health insurance and COBRA.  Find out what you are eligible for and what you're not, and remember that everything is negotiable.  Most severance packages include signing paperwork limiting what you can and cannot do in the future (think: non-competes, legal action against your employer, and working with past clients), so don't sign anything until these and any other details are ironed out.  If you feel like having a lawyer look it over would be beneficial, don't think twice: do it.  

WHAT DO YOU NEED?  Some employers will pay for a career coach in exchange for being available for any questions that they may have as they transition your former position.  Find out if this is available or if they can make it available.  Working with an outside coach to get on a good footing is critical to creating momentum for your next career move.

BUDGETS, BUDGETS: After the initial conversations, you'll want to immediately apply to receive unemployment benefits.  At the same time, sit down and do a budget for yourself.   There are great websites such as mint.com that are free, and which will show you how you spend your money and where you can save.  Figure out how much money your bills require, how much you'll have left over, and where you can cut expenses.  If you have credit card debt or loans, call your bank and explain your situation: they may be able to lower your rates or allow you to sign up for an assistance program for the duration of your unemployment (same goes for your utilities).  It's also a great time for that garage sale or finally selling those collectables on e-bay.  Speaking of making a bit of cash on the side, if you're able to get a side hustle, it may make all the difference to lessening the financial pressure until you land your next dream job (not to mention getting you out of the house, which certainly can't hurt).

CONNECT!  Seriously, "networking" is an awful word. I totally get it.  Having said that, let's re-frame it as "connecting", which is really all it is.  You're human, they're human, and you're shaking hands and seeing where you can create a win-win for each other.  Join professional organizations, go to events, get on social media and let friends, family, and past co-workers know what you're up to and what gets you excited these days.  See who is connected to who via Facebook or LinkedIn and see if you can organize a coffee or informational meeting to shake hands with who you're dying to meet.  The point is, be creative and use every opportunity to connect with people and let them know your story.  Speaking of story, have an "elevator pitch" at the ready (this is a 2-3 sentence description of what you do that will cause someone to say, "that's interesting: tell me more!".  Here's a great post that goes into more depth on this!
