Coining Post!! 🔗👥 Multiself / Multiselves !!
Tumblr media
Definition ::
Multiself is an umbrella term for any singlet/singlet adjacent being that experiences multiple identities/selves. The term also applies to individual sysmates that share the experience, provided the sysmate/s in question identify as multiself independently from the rest of the collective.
Mulitself beings may or may not "switch" between selves, though multiself is explicitly separate from the plurality spectrum and does not describe multiple consciousnesses/distinct people. However it's important to note that SOME parasian/plurallet experiences may fall under the multiself umbrella
• You can identify as both transplural/transmedian and multiself at the same time, in the same way that you can identify as a both a boy and a girl at the same time. Trans identity is very complex, and often paradoxical in nature
• Generally switches are amnesia free and voluntary, but this is definitely more of a guideline than a hard and fast rule. (I myself have light amnesia, and experience "switches" more as kinshifts rather than a conscious choice.)
• Multiself is inherently tied to transid, in the sense that selves have their own distinct sets of transids. Though notably, the amount in which the selves differentiate depends on the individual. On one end of the spectrum, one's selves may be extremely different in name, appearance, age, race, gender etc. On the other end of the spectrum, one's selves may be entirely identical except for each selves trans/trispersonality ids
Language ::
(Note: this is general language for the umbrella term, and may not be applicable to more specific labels that fall underneath it)
Shift (verb): The experience of changing selves
"I'm shifting into Mallory"
Form (verb): The experience of forming new selves
"I formed Riley yesterday"
Mindset (noun): The term used to describe which self you currently identify as
"I'm in Monty and Jamie's mindset right now"
Primary self (noun): The self you most commonly identify as
"I'm in Darce's mindset most often, they're my primary self"
Selves are not separate consciousnesses, though we/us language is also acceptable if you feel more comfortable using it. If you wish to refer to all your selves at once, but want to avoid being mistaken for a system, you could simply say "my selves", or "my cluster"
Flag colours ::
Those that choose to have multiselves: dark pink
Those that do not choose to have multiselves: light pink
Those that experience their selves as being "alter egos" for the main self: grey
Those that are at their core consciousness, experiencing selves that are all equally them: white
Those that have fluid selves, in any sense: lilac
Those that have static selves: light blue
Distinction from plurality: dark blue
Why was this coined?
This label was a reaction to segreID. At first glance the two terms seem very similar, but there are some key differences such as my far laxer approach to including those that identify with some form of plurality. This label is not meant to act as a recoin, nor is it meant to "out-inclusive" the segreID coiner, vampi-rq.
I wanted to create a less specific term that would include me, and anyone else that shared the majority of my experiences
While there is conflict between me and vampi-rq, I still have a lot of appreciation and respect their term and how it was intended to be used. The multiself label is personal to me, and it was born out of respect for the segreID definition rather than in spite of it. SegreID exists to describe a much more specific experience, and it's one that simply doesn't apply to me, which I'm fine with
All thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs
While by definition segreID does happen to fall under the multiself umbrella, that does not mean that 100% of the things described here apply to it. Vampi-rq has been explicit about what is and is not segreID. I encourage you to do your research and pick the appropriate label for what you're experiencing. The multiself label is intentionally very vague and nonspecific

Antitrust is a labor issue
Tumblr media
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me SATURDAY (Apr 27) in MARIN COUNTY, then Winnipeg (May 2), Calgary (May 3), Vancouver (May 4), and beyond!
Tumblr media
This is huge: yesterday, the FTC finalized a rule banning noncompete agreements for every American worker. That means that the person working the register at a Wendy's can switch to the fry-trap at McD's for an extra $0.25/hour, without their boss suing them:
https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/04/ftc-announces-rule-banning-noncompetes
The median worker laboring under a noncompete is a fast-food worker making close to minimum wage. You know who doesn't have to worry about noncompetes? High tech workers in Silicon Valley, because California already banned noncompetes, as did Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington.
The fact that the country's largest economies, encompassing the most "knowledge-intensive" industries, could operate without shitty bosses being able to shackle their best workers to their stupid workplaces for years after those workers told them to shove it shows you what a goddamned lie noncompetes are based on. The idea that companies can't raise capital or thrive if their know-how can walk out the door, secreted away in the skulls of their ungrateful workers, is bullshit:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/02/its-the-economy-stupid/#neofeudal
Remember when OpenAI's board briefly fired founder Sam Altman and Microsoft offered to hire him and 700 of his techies? If "noncompetes block investments" was true, you'd think they'd have a hard time raising money, but no, they're still pulling in billions in investor capital (primarily from Microsoft itself!). This is likewise true of Anthropic, the company's major rival, which was founded by (wait for it), two former OpenAI employees.
Indeed, Silicon Valley couldn't have come into existence without California's ban on noncompetes – the first silicon company, Shockley Semiconductors, was founded by a malignant, delusional eugenicist who also couldn't manage a lemonade stand. His eight most senior employees (the "Traitorous Eight") quit his shitty company to found Fairchild Semiconductor, a rather successful chip shop – but not nearly so successful as the company that two of Fairchild's top employees founded after they quit: Intel:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/24/the-traitorous-eight-and-the-battle-of-germanium-valley/
Likewise a lie: the tale that noncompetes raise wages. This theory – beloved of people whose skulls are so filled with Efficient Market Hypothesis Brain-Worms that they've got worms dangling out of their nostrils and eye-sockets – holds that the right to sign a noncompete is an asset that workers can trade to their employers in exchange for better pay. This is absolutely true, provided you ignore reality.
Remember: the median noncompete-bound worker is a fast food employee making near minimum wage. The major application of noncompetes is preventing that worker from getting a raise from a rival fast-food franchisee. Those workers are losing wages due to noncompetes. Meanwhile, the highest paid workers in the country are all clustered in a a couple of cities in northern California, pulling down sky-high salaries in a state where noncompetes have been illegal since the gold rush.
If a capitalist wants to retain their workers, they can compete. Offer your workers get better treatment and better wages. That's how capitalism's alchemy is supposed to work: competition transmogrifies the base metal of a capitalist's greed into the noble gold of public benefit by making success contingent on offering better products to your customers than your rivals – and better jobs to your workers than those rivals are willing to pay. However, capitalists hate capitalism:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/18/in-extremis-veritas/#the-winnah
Capitalists hate capitalism so much that they're suing the FTC, in MAGA's beloved Fifth Circuit, before a Trump-appointed judge. The case was brought by Trump's financial advisors, Ryan LLC, who are using it to drum up business from corporations that hate Biden's new taxes on the wealthy and stepped up IRS enforcement on rich tax-cheats.
Will they win? It's hard to say. Despite what you may have heard, the case against the FTC order is very weak, as Matt Stoller explains here:
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/ftc-enrages-corporate-america-by
The FTC's statutory authority to block noncompetes comes from Section 5 of the FTC Act, which bans "unfair methods of competition" (hard to imagine a less fair method than indenturing your workers). Section 6(g) of the Act lets the FTC make rules to enforce Section 5's ban on unfairness. Both are good law – 6(g) has been used many times (26 times in the five years from 1968-73 alone!).
The DC Circuit court upheld the FTC's right to "promulgate rules defining the meaning of the statutory standards of the illegality the Commission is empowered to prevent" in 1973, and in 1974, Congress changed the FTC Act, but left this rulemaking power intact.
The lawyer suing the FTC – Anton Scalia's larvum, a pismire named Eugene Scalia – has some wild theories as to why none of this matters. He says that because the law hasn't been enforced since the ancient days of the (checks notes) 1970s, it no longer applies. He says that the mountain of precedent supporting the FTC's authority "hasn't aged well." He says that other antitrust statutes don't work the same as the FTC Act. Finally, he says that this rule is a big economic move and that it should be up to Congress to make it.
Stoller makes short work of these arguments. The thing that tells you whether a law is good is its text and precedent, "not whether a lawyer thinks a precedent is old and bad." Likewise, the fact that other antitrust laws is irrelevant "because, well, they are other antitrust laws, not this antitrust law." And as to whether this is Congress's job because it's economically significant, "so what?" Congress gave the FTC this power.
Now, none of this matters if the Supreme Court strikes down the rule, and what's more, if they do, they might also neuter the FTC's rulemaking power in the bargain. But again: so what? How is it better for the FTC to do nothing, and preserve a power that it never uses, than it is for the Commission to free the 35-40 million American workers whose bosses get to use the US court system to force them to do a job they hate?
The FTC's rule doesn't just ban noncompetes – it also bans TRAPs ("training repayment agreement provisions"), which require employees to pay their bosses thousands of dollars if they quit, get laid off, or are fired:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/04/its-a-trap/#a-little-on-the-nose
The FTC's job is to protect Americans from businesses that cheat. This is them, doing their job. If the Supreme Court strikes this down, it further delegitimizes the court, and spells out exactly who the GOP works for.
This is part of the long history of antitrust and labor. From its earliest days, antitrust law was "aimed at dollars, not men" – in other words, antitrust law was always designed to smash corporate power in order to protect workers. But over and over again, the courts refused to believe that Congress truly wanted American workers to get legal protection from the wealthy predators who had fastened their mouth-parts on those workers' throats. So over and over – and over and over – Congress passed new antitrust laws that clarified the purpose of antitrust, using words so small that even federal judges could understand them:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/14/aiming-at-dollars/#not-men
After decades of comatose inaction, Biden's FTC has restored its role as a protector of labor, explicitly tackling competition through a worker protection lens. This week, the Commission blocked the merger of Capri Holdings and Tapestry Inc, a pair of giant conglomerates that have, between them, bought up nearly every "affordable luxury" brand (Versace, Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Coach, Stuart Weitzman, etc).
You may not care about "affordable luxury" handbags, but you should care about the basis on which the FTC blocked this merger. As David Dayen explains for The American Prospect: 33,000 workers employed by these two companies would lose the wage-competition that drives them to pay skilled sales-clerks more to cross the mall floor and switch stores:
https://prospect.org/economy/2024-04-24-challenge-fashion-merger-new-antitrust-philosophy/
In other words, the FTC is blocking a $8.5b merger that would turn an oligopoly into a monopoly explicitly to protect workers from the power of bosses to suppress their wages. What's more, the vote was unanimous, include the Commission's freshly appointed (and frankly, pretty terrible) Republican commissioners:
https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/04/ftc-moves-block-tapestrys-acquisition-capri
A lot of people are (understandably) worried that if Biden doesn't survive the coming election that the raft of excellent rules enacted by his agencies will die along with his presidency. Here we have evidence that the Biden administration's anti-corporate agenda has become institutionalized, acquiring a bipartisan durability.
And while there hasn't been a lot of press about that anti-corporate agenda, it's pretty goddamned huge. Back in 2021, Tim Wu (then working in the White wrote an executive order on competition that identified 72 actions the agencies could take to blunt the power of corporations to harm everyday Americans:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/party-its-1979-og-antitrust-back-baby
Biden's agency heads took that plan and ran with it, demonstrating the revolutionary power of technical administrative competence and proving that being good at your job is praxis:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/18/administrative-competence/#i-know-stuff
In just the past week, there's been a storm of astoundingly good new rules finalized by the agencies:
A minimum staffing ratio for nursing homes;
The founding of the American Climate Corps;
A guarantee of overtime benefits;
A ban on financial advisors cheating retirement savers;
Medical privacy rules that protect out-of-state abortions;
A ban on junk fees in mortgage servicing;
Conservation for 13m Arctic acres in Alaska;
Classifying "forever chemicals" as hazardous substances;
A requirement for federal agencies to buy sustainable products;
Closing the gun-show loophole.
That's just a partial list, and it's only Thursday.
Why the rush? As Gerard Edic writes for The American Prospect, finalizing these rules now protects them from the Congressional Review Act, a gimmick created by Newt Gingrich in 1996 that lets the next Senate wipe out administrative rules created in the months before a federal election:
https://prospect.org/politics/2024-04-23-biden-administration-regulations-congressional-review-act/
In other words, this is more dazzling administrative competence from the technically brilliant agencies that have labored quietly and effectively since 2020. Even laggards like Pete Buttigieg have gotten in on the act, despite a very poor showing in the early years of the Biden administration:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/11/dinah-wont-you-blow/#ecp
Despite those unpromising beginnings, the DOT has gotten onboard the trains it regulates, and passed a great rule that forces airlines to refund your money if they charge you for services they don't deliver:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/04/24/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-rules-to-deliver-automatic-refunds-and-protect-consumers-from-surprise-junk-fees-in-air-travel/
The rule also bans junk fees and forces airlines to compensate you for late flights, finally giving American travelers the same rights their European cousins have enjoyed for two decades.
It's the latest in a string of muscular actions taken by the DOT, a period that coincides with the transfer of Jen Howard from her role as chief of staff to FTC chair Lina Khan to a new gig as the DOT's chief of competition enforcement:
https://prospect.org/infrastructure/transportation/2024-04-25-transportation-departments-new-path/
Under Howard's stewardship, the DOT blocked the merger of Spirit and Jetblue, and presided over the lowest flight cancellation rate in more than decade:
https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/2023-numbers-more-flights-fewer-cancellations-more-consumer-protections
All that, along with a suite of protections for fliers, mark a huge turning point in the US aviation industry's long and worsening abusive relationship with the American public. There's more in the offing, too including a ban on charging families extra for adjacent seats, rules to make flying with wheelchairs easier, and a ban on airlines selling passenger's private information to data brokers.
There's plenty going on in the world – and in the Biden administration – that you have every right to be furious and/or depressed about. But these expert agencies, staffed by experts, have brought on a tsunami of rules that will make every working American better off in a myriad of ways. Those material improvements in our lives will, in turn, free us up to fight the bigger, existential fights for a livable planet, free from genocide.
It may not be a good time to be alive, but it's a much better time than it was just last week.
And it's only Thursday.

ME1 Systems
This list was made to not only catalogue where missions were, but to also make note of all the collectibles that you can scan for.
*this list was based off of Legendary Edition, but it should still be applicable for the OG trilogy(?)
The formatting is as follows:
>System Cluster -System name Planets Missions
*if there are multiple asteroid belts in a system, Asteroid belt 1 refers to the belt closest to the star.
*Cardinal directions are used to describe where the collectible is in belts, and so north is the top of the screen, east is right, etc.
A ME3 list will be coming soon! And if people are interested I can document all the discovery blurbs you get from scanning non-minerals: insignias, writings, etc. (hell, I might do it anyways but its nice to know I'm not shouting into the void)
If you find any discrepancies or have any questions let me know!

Well come and well met—it's been a little while since the last update! 🌼I've tried to include all the communities I have missed over the past few weeks but, if you notice any I haven't included, please reach out to me via the Discord or Google Form and let me know.
Unfortunately, work has been kicking my ass. My biggest complaint is that I haven't been able to keep the document!
However, as of 09/07, the following communities have been added to Sea's Community Compendium for XIV Creatives.
EVENT / COMMUNITY SPACES
FFXIV Photographers (Tumblr) — A space for virtual photography in FFXIV (gposes, screenshots, photostories), run by @why-raven!
The Bel Canto ( @wine-xiv ) — Once a beloved opera house, The Bel Canto winery finds herself a perfect blend of beloved past with exciting present. Events typically run Typically, events run the 2nd & 4th Sunday of every month.
The Rusty Mug ( @rustymug-ffxiv ) — A dive bar located in the Brume of Ishgard. All are welcome and drinks are cheap. The Rusty Mug has a neighbourhood bar feel. While it is nothing fancy, it does have seats!
Le Renard Argenté ( renardargente-ffxiv ) — A place for gentlemen who prefer the finer things in life, as well as the company of other men. Le Renard Argenté is an Ishgardian upscale cocktail lounge and a host club catering to those who enjoy masculine company. You will not find courtesans or bookings here but you will find an elegant atmosphere and engaging company. Hosts events every first and third Monday 9pm-1am US-EST.
The Cracked Cluster — Tavern and Restaurant in Revenant's Toll, Mor Dhona.
The Horizon — A community for miqo'te RPers and associates with a focus on traditional societies and roleplay.
Have you thought about joining our Tumblr Community? You can find it here! Members are currently sharing their FFXIV Write work; you should join us and post yours!
Tumblr media
Want to submit? You can either fill out the google form here or send me an ask with the relevant information!
Is my space suitable for the Compendium? Most of the time, yes! Below the read more is some more information/stipulations, though this is all publicly available in the document.
Below are the following things I do not accept on the Compendium:
Personal/Single-Character LFC ads. (Though these get posted to the SEAFLOOR Tumblr Community when I find them!)
Content intended for or can be used for bullying, harassment and OOC gossip. E.g. ‘Secrets’ blogs, receipts, callout posts, etc. This does not include IC tabloid blogs or other ventures used to generate roleplay.
Communities that do not have an RP/writing element (large-scale exempt).
Anything I find personally distasteful or goes against the spirit of this project.
Common-sense rule applies.
I want to put my community on the Compendium but we have an application process. Is this okay?
Yes! Just note somewhere in your application that's a requirement. The only thing that is mandatory for the Compendium is that you must be open to new members or have a public-facing/accessible facet. There's no point advertising a community if no one can join it in some way!
I want to put my Community on the compendium but I only have x number of members —
Also totally okay! People don't start with large communities. Activity is a must but, whether your server has two or two thousand members, if you're looking for new people to join, I'd love to help you find people.
I want to put my community/resource on the Compendium but I worry its too niche?
Okay, and? If your Eorzean Fishing Alliance has four members but you roleplay every second weekend, I still want to know about it. The same goes for resources; if it's relevant to the game, it'll be useful to someone.
How active does a community need to be?
If you find a community has not been active in about two/three months, send me a message and I'll take a look at it. Communities have ebbs and flows, especially event spaces that may take hiatuses depending on member interest/life events. I'm not strict in my implementation provided a space isn't dead. If a link or anything is broken, contact me asap!
I have [insert a question not stated here]?

For those with any psychiatric disability/disabilities,
The preference does not have to strong
*partners is not specifically referring to only romantic partners, just any type of relationships you classify as such.
*2 for example having a personality disorder and preferring to be with people who also have some kind of personality disorder regardless of it it is the same as theirs, or preferring to be with people in the same cluster of personality disorder.

Note
(Excuse me if it sounds targeted because, uhh, it's very much not targeted at a specific individual. However. It is very much targeted at a specific kind of people)
NPD (plus like several other stigmatised disorders) culture is being sick and tired every time people are like 'OhhHhH nOOoOoOoOO the soft NPD-ers are complaining about being demonised nuuuu why can't you act distant and cold like us, the better cluster B haver' blablabla stuff like that. Like wow, it's as if people react and respond differently despite having the same disorder as you. I am not saying "fuck you" if you're cold and distant (because I'm also like this), I'm saying "fuck you" if you bitch about people presenting differently. You complain about people being stereotypes but also complain when they're not acting like stereotypes, pick a motherfucking struggle, my behated liege.
This is also very much applicable to other disorders. Like. 😐 Shut your mouth before I shut it myself.

Here's a post with tips for writing your own image descriptions.
If you have Flatland OCs you regularly post art of, and would like to help me at least tag them properly, here are the tags I use for this blog, saved to a notepad for easy copying and pasting as needed.
If you want to help, you can go through these and create a specific tag cluster for your different OCs for me to copy and paste.
Just pick out whatever here is relevant to your OCs, and put it in a paragraph, separated by commas. It should include their name, anything you think people would want to search for (like Queer characters), and if applicable, the title of any stories they appear in.
I have been considering adding tags for the shapes of each characters, so you can add that in as well. (Ie: Rectangle, Cube, Straight Line, Kite, ect)
Then you can send me the results in an ask, and I'll be able to save those to a document, so all I have to do when I reblog your OCs is copy it in and all the right tags will show up.
You can have each character's tags separated by a paragraph.
IE:
Billie: [paragraph of tags separated by commas]
Bomb: [paragraph]
Joe: [paragraph]
I'm not sure what the character limit is for asks these days, but feel free to send as many at a time as you can fit in an ask.
Including the names of the characters in your art whenever you post them will also help.

🔥 astronomy
so take this all with a grain of salt because I'm not a cosmologist, but:
mathematics used to model the unvierse at a large scale (including the Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker metric) assume that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic--that matter is evenly distributed, and the universe looks the same in all directions. though it is a simplification, this is a relatively productive assumption. it accords with the big bang and the ΛCDM model (cosmological constant + cold dark matter), and at large scales it is definitely approximately true--above 100 Mpc or so the universe really is a pretty even blend of empty space, matter, and energy.
there are also what are called inhomogeneous cosmologies, which propose that variations in the density of matter and energy have significant effects, and we need to account for those effects for observations of distant objects to be accurately interpreted. time should run faster in voids than in the middle of very dense galactic clusters, for instance, with a difference of up to 40% between the two. it has been argued that these effects could account for the supernovae observations on which the original idea of an accelerating expanding universe was based.
i don't know enough physics to say if this is likely, but given that there seem to be few good candidates for dark energy, and the relative parsimony of the idea (it doesn't require new forces or particles, just more careful application of existing principles), it seems pretty compelling!

hello and how are you, fellow Wanderer?
Happy Pride Month! We came and wanted to send an ask for the Pride Themed Oc Ask Game!
Fourteen | Eighteen | Twenty-One
Hope this month is filled with fun and joy for you! :D
☕ Natsume Rune, @365runesoftheamalgamations
OMG Hi I think I recognize you, did you change up your blog? I wasn't active for a hot minute so I don't know, but I think I have met you before. Let me know <3
Pride OC Asks~
14. Do you have ocs on the aro or ace spectrum?
I absolutely do! and they're all over the spectrum too. Most of my characters end up aro or ace coded because I'm AroAce myself, but I'm gonna focus on the several I have that I intentionally wrote as aro, ace, or both!
Princess Snow is the main character in my Snow White retelling, she's AroAce and in a QPR with her best friend Lan
Lan is Snow's best friend, they're also Arospec and Acespec, and they're also Nonbinary/Genderqueer
Princess Sapphire is one of the two main characters in my Sleeping Beauty retelling, she's Demisexual. She also has ADHD and is in love with her bodyguard (his name is Raven and he's bisexual and autistic)
Triveya is the magic expert in my dark fairytale retellings series, she's AroAce and Genderqueer. She's also AuDHD, and going through a burntout gifted kid arc right now.
Nickelle is the heroes team leader in my teenage superhero wip, she's AroAce, and she's also Japanese American. She has ice powers and gets a villain arc followed by a redemption arc
Kylee is the youngest teammate in my teenage superhero wip, and she's PanAce! She's also non-speaking autistic and has superspeed and invisibility powers
Chase is the team Tech Genius and inventor in my teenage superhero wip, and he's PanAro! He's also Jewish Romani, and struggles with a lot of mental health issues and his cluster B disorders (he has OCD, Bipolar Disorder, and a psychosis Disorder). He also struggles with anxiety, depression, and insomnia. (he's my favorite of this wip)
Corie is one of the main characters in my space cowboy wip, she's AroAce. She's also a cyborg bounty hunter and thinks she doesn't need people but she'll learn
18. Do you prefer to give your ocs specific labels, or keep it unspecified? Why? If applicable, do you change their labels depending on circumstance?
Not really, unless it feels applicable, or the setting would have specific labels (my fantasy wip for instance, I mostly leave things pretty vague)
21. Free ramble card wee
The reason I wrote Kylee as PanAce and Chase as PanAro is because while we are starting to get a bit more aspect representation in media recently- which is great- there's more asexual characters than anything else, and if there are aro characters (which there are almost none), aromantisicm gets conflated or immediately lumped with asexuality.
While it is true that a person can be both aro and ace at the same time- there are a lot of alloace or alloaro people, and there's almost no representation for those people in media, or the internet in general. Aromantic is rarely even said outside of a couple of social media posts.
So I created two character that were kind of opposites on the aro and ace spectrums. One that's alloace and one that's alloaro- and they have a pretty close sibling like relationship as well (though neither will ever admit it).
We need more characters that are just aro! Aro people need more care and representation (and if they want it, love).

Are Red State Universities Starting to Feel the Pressure? An Anecdotal Account
As a member of academia, I periodically get inquiries from other law schools asking if I'm interested in lateralling. This is quite flattering, though I know full well that such messages aren't only being sent to me and that there is a long road from "email of interest" to actually getting a job offer. Recently, though, I've noticed that the schools making such inquiries of me are disproportionately located in deep red, southern states. It could be a statistical artifact, of course -- I don't get so many solicitations so as to negate the possibility of random clustering. But it does make me wonder if the decaying political climate in those states means that these schools are experiencing more pressure in terms of faculty outflow, which they're trying to replace via laterals.*  Both the specific anti-academia initiatives (crusades against "controversial topics"; attacks on tenure), and the broader threat to political and civil rights (abortion bans, threats to democracy) that are characteristic of these states make working there -- and to be clear, I hold the universities in question in the highest esteem -- a far less attractive proposition. And from the other side of the fence, serving on our school's appointments committee this year it did seem to me like we were getting an uptick in "red state refugee" lateral applications -- though again, that's just an impression, and I have no data to back it up. For another bit of anecdotal evidence, see Sapna Kumar's recent interview explaining why she elected to leave Houston Law for the University of Minnesota. I'm curious, though, if others are noticing this pattern as well. Other junior law professors -- are you getting disproportionate interest from "red state" schools? Any other sense that these schools are indeed facing faculty outflow pressure? For what it's worth, I'm very happy in Portland and at Lewis & Clark, and have no interest in decamping anywhere. My wife and I have bought a house, we've settled down, I like my students and my colleagues, I've got the course package I want -- life is good and I see no need to mess with a happy status quo.** But my wife and I have also decided that, even beyond any generic inertial resistance, we're in particular not interested in moving to schools in places where our basic rights don't feel secure. We're at the phase of life where we're thinking of starting a family, and doing that in a place where pregnancy turns my wife into a vessel for the state would be horribly unfair to her. And for my part, I teach constitutional law -- a course that, rumor has it, sometimes veers into "controversial topics". I don't want to go to jail because some yahoo right-wing prosecutor decides I'm teaching Roe and Dobbs wrong. * It might say something about my professional self-esteem that I assume the only reason these schools would be interested in the likes of me is that they're in the midst of a political crisis. ** All that said, I want to be very clear that if Harvard Law School wanted to entice me to move to Cambridge by tripling my salary, they can feel free to mess away. via The Debate Link https://ift.tt/gJTALNB

Celebrating Small Wins: Reflections on the First Five Years of my Career
Time flies indeed. As of last Sunday, it's been exactly five years since my "first day in the real world." I know I still have a long way to go, and so much to learn, but I want to appreciate the progress I've made in the past five years.
I've had several part-time jobs back in college but it was on August 20, 2018 when I first reported to work full-time. I was a Media Writer (aka Broadcast Monitor) at Asia's leading media intelligence company, Isentia. Whenever I reached the office, I texted my parents "Happy place na" to let them know I got safe.
I stayed for two years before I got laid off, which triggered feelings that led to this article. (And an open letter to my colleagues/friends on my personal blog)
Looking back, I will always be grateful for my time as a Media Writer. It wasn't easy, I spent countless hours beyond my shift because I wanted to give my best in each of the 41283 summaries I've done for two years.
For five months, I commuted from Los Banos, Laguna to Ortigas everyday, and vice versa, before we were finally able to rent a 5 sqm room in Manila. That was the only room we could afford back then.
There were struggles and days when I wanted to give up. But I've also grown a lot, gained meaningful friendships, strengthened my faith in the Lord, and developed my work ethic.
It was worth it.
I remember often feeling so drained and tired on my way home, but I still looked forward to the next day so I could do my job again. I love learning new things everyday, and this job gave me that opportunity.
If there was one word that would describe my work ethic, that would be Passion. I always put passion and love in every task that I did.
More than a year later, I'm astonished that Isentia has recognized that passion. My teammate and friend Morris Manalaysay nominated me for the Isentia Awards Q1 recognition (without me knowing) and on Nov 21 2019, I was Manila's Isentia Awards Q1 winner alongside colleagues from different countries. That was my first career milestone.
I was so happy Momi got to see this day before she went to heaven. She was so proud, and I'm grateful I got to tell her it's all because of her and Dad that I get to survive each day and reach these milestones. All that I am and all that I ever will be, I owe it to them.
Isentia has been very supportive during my Mom's fight with cancer and raised funds for her, too. When Momi died in 2020, they also supported me in my grieving. I took a break and they only asked me to go back when I was ready.
When I was laid off, my separation anxiety was so strong, especially since I've been close with my batchmates and team friends as if we were high school classmates. (I'm glad we're friends until today even when we're in different companies already.)
Good journeys come to an end, too, for new and better chapters to unfold.
Chapter II
Getting laid off was bittersweet. I said goodbye to a job that I loved but it also led to better opportunities. I've been a Content Writer at Sevron Safety Solutions, worked on various projects for over a year. I got to do things I never tried before and wrote almost everything from blogs, social media posts, courses for The Knights of Safety™️, email campaigns, assessment tests for applicants, pillar pages, cluster pages, technical documents, and more. But my favorite task of all was writing the life stories of my colleagues, which was compiled into an internal book. As a storyteller, creative nonfiction is my favorite form of writing.
I'm also grateful we always aimed to change the world and save lives in each task. This meant a lot to me because I value meaningful work. Dale Allen was possibly the most passionate CEO/founder I've ever worked for. We had a therapist and life coach, too, Markos Yiannis, who had been so helpful in addressing our concerns, whether it's personal or work-related.
But one day, I was included in the layoffs again.
Chapter III
And that was when the plot twist happened. I returned to Isentia! This time, I was reporting to Isentia Singapore. Thanks to Ms Lady Ochel Espinosa, Regional Insights Director for Emerging Markets in Southeast Asia for encouraging me to apply for the role of Senior Insights Analyst in 2021. It was my dream job since 2018. I applied for the role of Insights Analyst in 2020, but I didn't get in. When I got laid off that year, Ms Ochel invited me to apply again, but I was already hired at Sevron. It was my "the one that got away". I'm grateful I got to pursue it in 2022. My favorite task was being part of our PH Elections white paper which was featured by media outlets. My favorite SG client was AIC.
However, I later on realized that as much as this was a truly great opportunity with so much learning and growth, what I really wanted to do was content writing instead of media analysis. I'll always be grateful I reached my dream of being a Senior Insights Analyst, but I realized it wasn't for me.
So after a year, for the first time, I resigned.
I love the company. I love the team. But I had to go. And find my passion.
But no matter where my career takes me, Isentia will always have a special place in my heart.
Chapter IV:
I applied to several Writer job openings. There was this one opening for Content Writer, but during the interview, they said the role was actually article moderation. Then I went through three challenging interviews and thankfully, I passed as an Article Moderator at iOPEX Technologies. Three months later, I became a Senior Article Moderator. And in my sixth month, I was recognized as the Top Overall Performer and agent with Top Attendance.
As much as it's fulfilling to be recognized for having good performance, I'm just as grateful for maintaining a good attendance. I have five rides to the office every day, encounter some floods along the way when it's raining, commute as early as 12AM, 3AM, 4AM, or 10PM depending on our shift, and so far, I've never been late yet since I started in February 🥹 I'm not saying I'll never be late, although that's the goal, but I just feel grateful and lucky that I was never late yet. Grateful, because everyday is a struggle, but I'm surviving it through God's grace. Lucky, because I know there are things outside our control that make tardiness inevitable and valid sometimes, but so far those things haven't affected me yet. So thank you po, Lord.
I believe in celebrating small wins just as we treasure huge milestones, and each time we report to work, each time we punch out after a long tiring day, each hour that we meet our quota, those are daily wins worth celebrating.
I'm glad to be back in the world of news, just like in my first job. From monitoring to moderating :)
There may be struggles and challenges, but I appreciate the job and the team. Very blessed to work with proactive teammates who happen to be good friends as well. (By the way, we are hiring! Let me know if you want to apply haha I doubt if anyone will read this lengthy story time but just in case, I'm putting this out here).
I was looking for Content Writing, but I found something else. And I enjoy it.
I realized, my adviser was right. it's okay to be open to new opportunities other than my passions. I shouldn't limit myself to writing.
What they say is true: you'll never know until you try. (I'm still writing everyday now, though, but in my journal or my verbose Instagram stories which are literally stories because of their long captions 🤣)
I'm grateful for each job I've had and currently have. My Dad and I were also able to transfer to a much better, bigger apartment unit (about 21 sqm?) since October 18, 2020. Thanks to the severance pay from Isentia 😅 Indeed, "All things work together for the good of those who love God." (Romans 8:28)
There are plenty of dreams that are yet to be fulfilled, but for now, I want to cherish the fact that I'm already living what I only once dreamt of.
I may not have been (or not yet?) a startup founder and CEO, or UNHRC/UNCHR diplomat, or New York Times bestselling author, or Miss Universe (😅) just like my younger self dreamt of, but I'm still thankful for the progress I've made. It's not much, but to my younger self, this is already a miracle. Sometimes imposter syndrome hits me, but I fight it by appreciating my hard work.
I look back at my first job, the struggle of commuting from LB to Ortigas each day, the struggle of squeezing ourselves in a 5 sqm room, the struggle of making ends meet, and I just feel so blessed to be where I am now. We haven't reached financial freedom yet but little by little, we're on our way.
To my future self, I don't know where you'll be, but I hope I've made you proud as well.
At the end of the day, all wins, big and small, are because of God's grace. His faithfulness carries me through every single day. As always, without Him, I can do nothing.
To everyone who's been part of this journey, thank you for the memories and lessons you've shared with me. And thank you for the moments we have yet to share.
To Momi, how I wish you're still here to celebrate our small and big wins but I know you're watching over us everyday. I'll do my best to keep making you proud up there. 🥹
To Apa, Dad, I'm so glad you're here with me. All that I accomplish each day is a result of how much you believe in me. I have many dreams in life but my greatest dream is to see you live up to 104 years old.
Thank you Lord Jesus for sustaining me in the first five years of my career. I surrender to You the bigger picture and the little details that make up each day.
Here's to the journey that lies ahead and to the growth that awaits ❤️
(PS. If you've read this far, message me an emoji. I just want to conduct an experiment char haha I'm just curious who was patient enough to read all this but I doubt if anyone will read this all 🤣. It's okay though. I had fun releasing this out of my chest 🥹)

Humour
Walt and I are recovering Whedonists with a thing for complex situations where the laughs sort of build over time, and I still like the occasional bit of outré comedy. My father, however, leans heavily on the Wes Anderson side of things, and considers slow-burning absurdity to be an absolute gasser. He's subjected me to Viking, a little Indie bit about a C-team of would-be astronauts stuck simulating social problems lived by the A-team on Mars, and I'm just left thinking that there's times where pushing into implausibility that harshly can make an entire premise tip over from amusement to sheer boredom. Not every TIFF finalist is entirely worth my time, let's say.
Long story short, we follow David, a Phys. Ed teacher in Montreal who, after several tests, is revealed to be a psychological match for one of the mission leads currently spending Sols on Mars. He reacts the same way, has the same overall temperament - only the language barrier differentiates them. He joins a team of implausibly local other matches for the rest of the A-team and is shipped out to New Mexico or Texas - it's never made clear where their outpost is, even if it is clearly in the Southwestern US - and has to adopt his Martian vis-à-vis' name, mannerisms, personality and responsibilities in order to find and fix potential problems between crewmembers - complete with fake EVAs.
The initial vector for bleak humour starts with the fact that the C-team only corresponds to the A-team psychologically, so you're left with female applicants taking male names and being told to assume male mannerisms for the duration of their mission - complete with groping attempts if one of the A-team members is known to have sexual assault charges in the rinks. The opposite also applies to male members of the simulation team, with one of them being forced to go by "Liz" for the movie's duration - and to eventually tape a bag of beans to his chest in order to fake his corresponding A-team member's Martian pregnancy.
Of course, this leads to obvious tensions and to various friction-causing situations, such as the "male" mission member being simulated by a female one needing to sleep while playing a recording of the actual A-team lead's thunderous snores.
You're supposed to chuckle at the inherent absurdity, but I really couldn't shake how implausible it would be for guys and gals from my own backyard to be schlepped out to within hitchhiking distance of Austin, Texas to pretend like their tuna can of an adapted cluster of RVs is actually a stand-in for a distant and forlorn Martian hab module. If NASA has enough budget to hypothetically send people to Mars in the not too distant future, it probably has budget enough to either find planet-based analogues for behavioral testing or to just chuck everything at an AI model - as I'm sure they're wont to do - and call it a day.
Dad spent three days poking Walt and I for our opinion, only for the both of us to share a resounding shrug. I guess I'm not one for self-effacing absurdist bits of Sci-Fi nonsense that goes so far as to elude to the Sim teams having mostly detailed replicas of the A-team's tools, only for our ragtag group of Québécois candidates to end up with a trash can with taped-on cardboard legs standing in for a MAV module...
