• Paperinika in Martina’s first few stories was great satire, but the character has since been stuck like that. (We’ll ignore Martina’s subsequent attempt to move away from this by making her fight the evil queen from Snow White and beheading robot clones of herself) Most writers kept her ridiculously ‘feminist’ attitude and personality, or changed her hating men into hating PK specifically. And they generally kept a lot of her negative character traits. So the character became a bit hateful. (Now that i think of it i haven’t read enough Brazilian stories so this is like from what i’ve gathered from Italian and Danish stuff) I’m personally not that much a fan of a hero who’s most defining quality is that she’s a narcissistic prick.

Paperinik moved away from a lot of his own negative character traits (he was a bit of a villain at first after all). But Paperinika did not. Probably a lot of writers still deemed all of those things as ‘funny’ because haha woman mad. On the other hand, Paperinika also fell out of use in Italy, so maybe they didn’t think it was that funny. But they never thought to like, y know change her character.

UNTIL ULTRAHEROES HELL YEAH. So like yeah Ultraheroes wasn’t good or something (though i gotta say i’m personally quite fond of it) but they did reinvent Paperinika’s character. Decided that she’s actually likable now! Moved away from all the sexism and gave her a fun personality that fit modern day Daisy and created one of the most fun love triangles between Daisy, Donald, PK and PKA. Too bad that it didn’t really stick outside of Ultraheroes. So it remains one of, if not the best version of the character for me. The end of the chapter where they go against Spectrus and Zafira is just a fav of mine.

• Rosa’s Duckburg is really un-Barksian. It might all add up in continuity and references, but tonally it’s a whole different universe.

The entire thing is too serious. I might even say it all makes too much sense. Barks never cared much about making sense. Scrooge had a different bin every other story.

Guido Martina was always the king of not making sense. He probably contradicted his own stories more than anyone else. Both hik and Barks never cared about continuity. It’s about the story. Duckburg could change into whatever they wanted, as long as it served the story they wished to tell.

Martina’s Duckburg is pretty different from Barks’. It’s a more cynical, one could say almost parodic version of it, where everything and everyone is terrible. But with that it goes way further in those satirical elements of Barks. Something Rosa rarely did, who told more straightforward consumer friendly epic Hollywood stories.

Like uhh we could take a look at Scrooge. Rosa Scrooge is ultimately a good man. He doesn’t even actually care about money, but about the way he got it! It’s about earning the money and the adventures! And secretly he’s a good person who does give money away.

Martina Scrooge is a bad man. Oh oh oh so bad. Scrooge is used to critique and make fun of the rich that Martina saw around him. He has a comically long list of debts that other people owe him. He got rich by lots of illegal manners, and can get others to do whatever he wants, simply because he has money.

Barks Scrooge is in the middle, but I’d say it leans more to Martina. Scrooge is just a person. Does bad things and good things. He’s full of human contradictions and complexities. But more often than not, even when he’s more neutral, Scrooge is used to make fun off. The stories he tells about how he got rich are ridiculous. They are meant to be laughed at. It’s this difference in tone which is prevalent in most of their writing.

Rosa simply doesn’t use the characters that way. That’s it kinda. Hope this explains my imo a bit lol

This got posted in a group that I’m in and I’m wondering if you can help out! I’m stumped enough that I’m wondering if this is even a Taylor lyric lol

So.... I think it's not a Taylor lyric. I have no idea what else to think it is unfortunately, but here's how I came to that conclusion:

I first searched my lyric document for " g" to give me just words mid-phrase that start with G (as the least common starting letter in the acronym) and then scrolled through every word starting with G in the document, looking for one that was preceded by a word starting with M and followed by a words starting with W. There were a very small number, and only one that got close with another relevant letter: "And yeah I might go with it" from Girl At Home. But it's not spot on. [Similarly "...mad woman, you made her like that" was one I thought of from staring at the acronym for a while but only gets part of it.]

I was also checking each one for the reversed pattern, in which case "Giving me your weekends" from Cardigan gets the middle four but not the rest.

Then, I checked the document I have for Taylor's unreleased songs. These are just the ones I've been able to find on the internet, and the lyrics are unofficial, so who really knows, but I didn't find the right pattern there either.

And then, I went back and looked for any lines that started with G, just in case the line breaks in my documents messed up my initial searches. Still nothing.

I won't say I'm 100% sure it's not a lyric, because I'm human and I make mistakes, but let's say I'm 99% sure.

If anyone ever does figure out what it's about, please come back and let me know, I'm very invested now!

A random thought: I feel like most people in the fandom now are so new (they joined in with the movie release!) and unaware of the uh atrocities of back in the day. And y'all are lucky, but those of us who know. Know. (yes, I was unbearable but that's ok because I was having fun, and despite what I just said: have fun in your fandoms even if you're "unbearable", just keep it welcome to all and enjoy the enthusiasm you have for it:))

An unpopular opinion: Oh boy. Maybe stop making quick judgments about people based on what they write/who they ship? There is a line, but I've genuinely never seen it crossed by anyone at least openly sooo just let people have fun? And don't say anything about something? Unless it's actually harmful but even then, keep it to a dm or something and have an open discussion. Just let people vibe, please? Especially younger fans. Just, I’ve seen a weird amount of negativity towards them. They’re kids having fun, we all used to be like that so please, be kind and patient. They’ll learn if they make a mistake. Ok? Ok cool:) (maybe not unpopular but still I wanted to say it)

Characters I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): um. Where to begin? Honestly I think every woman in Turn at one point or another, except perhaps Peggy in my opinion. Oh but especially Anna. Also Simcoe. With Hamilton, probably again everyone at some point, but the way Angelica was written just feels so overwhelmingly fictional it bugs me. (But at least Hamilton had some genuine relationships between women, not great but still)

Favorite friendship(s): Ben and Caleb, Washington and Lafayette (what?? yes, you fools. lol). It may sound a tad ~cringey~ but I generally like Hamilton's vibe with the boys, maybe it's just the gender envy, but it's kinda cute and fun.

Character I most identify with: well jeez, I won't lie but Washington. In both versions, except god knows I could never be that chill. Also a dash of Laurens.

Character I wish I could be: wow what a loaded question ummm. I don't want to be like him, but I want to be like in his position so Hamilton lol. Playing an active role but I know personally I am not cut out for a battlefield, so a desk suits me well.

A random thought: y’all it’s been so long since I’ve touched MCU I should catch up/refresh shouldn’t I?

An unpopular opinion: I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but I’m going to say it anyway. Personally, I really don’t like the movie Civil War, I think it’s what sorta made me disinterested in mcu. It’s been years since I’ve watched it so maybe I would have a completely different opinion if I saw it today, but at the time it just felt so...wrong? And childish? I literally don’t even remember why they were fighting or how that movie even ended (I feel like it just wasn’t satisfying??) but I think also, as a kid or teen watching that, it reminded me sooo much of the dumb drama that, you know, kids get into. I mean, getting your friends on someone’s side like that?? Like, I know they were mad but- but there are other ways of dealing with emotions??? And involving everyone's friends too? So yeah, it just felt off to me at the time, and looking back now, from what I remember, it just frustrated me. Especially as a kid who deals with dumb drama like that all the time, kids would want to see a better example especially from adult superheroes or at least not be reminded of the bs they have to go through sometimes. But, rant over, that’s all just my opinion:)

3. Washette (ship-bless you<3 get ready for rambles oh no)

When I started shipping them: So I first had the thought in 7th grade while my history teacher was talking about them and my little brain went: haha that’s pretty gay. (teacher keeps talking about them) wait a fucking minute, that is pretty gay! But it wasn’t until I got sucked into Hamilton that I really started actively shipping them by reading fics and what not, but something about them became an instant favorite. And later (little personal story time) I pretty much completely stopped reading fic and being active in fandom for years and actually, when I got my first panic attack that - no joke - lasted for 5 hours, for some reason my brain (as it’s decaying lol) said I want to go and reread all my favorite washette fics and also do what I was I always too scared to do. Write!! So that night I binged the fics and found myself falling in love again, feeling all the old passion I had for them again, and the next night (still very shaken) I wrote an outline of a good ol washette confession + kiss that was extremely thoughtful and good, and honestly, I have not actually used that outline yet! Maybe I’m saving it. But yeah, this is a long answer, but I have a weird amount of attachment to them and this ship, I wish I knew why too. <3 

My thoughts: so many. Too many. First of all, I love that I have so many versions of them in my mind, right? When I started writing, I had never watched Turn but then I did and then it was like: hell yeah, another washette set. At this point, my brain has created it’s own unique version of them but it’s like, they’re so versatile! That’s one neat thing about this fandom as a whole, we get more than one character and personality and that’s just fun right?! More specifically on washette I mean, they’re just so sweet. Historically, their relationship is unique and cute, and you’d have to be a fool to think that to Washington Lafayette was just another friend. Even strictly platonically, it was something special and it’s so obvious I just love them. Ok. Enough thoughts for now <3

What makes me happy about them: the loooove, the comfort they found in each other, the fact that like every person at the time documenting them knew and understood they were special to each other like, they were just that in love. 

What makes me sad about them: oh so much that I try to ignore lol. There is the one year when Lafayette went to France and all his letters to Wash are like: “I have not received one letter from you, but it’s ok, I love you and I know you love me too :)” WHO WAS NOT DELIVERING THESE LETTERS, I HAVE NAMES, NOW I WANT ANSWERS. Anyway, also just most things that happened when Laf went back to France. And then when he visited America in 1824 and visited Washington’s grave. Yeah. ow. (also, you know what, I have done too much research on this event. lmk if you would like a post)

Things done in fanfic that annoy me: Generally, I’m not annoyed by much in fanfic at least with them and what I’ve seen. I’m still nostalgic for the old school nonbinary Laf fics, so it ain’t those. Literally maybe it’s because I’m starved for content but I can’t really think of anything, I love it all.

Things I look for in fanfic: back to the whole starved for content thing, I am a library of washette fics but I think if I was to pick a certain thing that I would love it’s just um fluff? And honesty, if that makes sense. Love confessions are very good as well. Canon era, please :) pining but not too much that it hurts me lol

My wishlist: literally all my wips. If I could whisk them into existence I could die happy and knowing I have put a variety of washette content in the world. Something else though, more fics :’) I love writing but sometimes I want to curl up with a cozy, new washette fic like a cup of hot chocolate and be surprised and learn something new and just..yeah:)

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: what. Ok but actually, Martha and Adrienne because they are both honestly perfect for them and I love them too (I’m going to be biased, especially Adrienne)

My happily ever after for them: Can Lafayette just move the family to America? But also, it’s sad, but like I know Laf would be sad in America while France suffers. So...maybe a world where things in France go better and Lafayette gets to visit Washington more often and bring the family!! (Washington visit France too??)

4. Anna Strong (character)

How I feel about this character: I like her! She’s fun and…strong (oops lol) and she’s made some mistakes sure, but I feel like she did her best to learn from them and move on

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Honestly, I know they didn’t have a lot of interaction in the show but Anna/Mary has potential. And Anna/Edmund

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: her and Ben and Caleb

My unpopular opinion about this character: I really can’t think of anything unpopular

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: in general, her having more screen time with less men you know? I mean like one-on-one kind of scenes. Also I would’ve liked to see at least her and Selah talk. Like, really talk. They never really did that, right? I just have so many questions about them

Our Next Adventure Part 2 (The Master X Reader)

WC: 1531

Warnings: None really, it’s pretty sweet though there is a teensy description of violence but nothing major.

Summary: After years of posing as MI6 agents, the time has come for Y/N and the Master to finally face the Doctor, though Y/N reflects on their time undercover

A/N: I got a major inspiration wave and cranked this out lol. Hope y’all enjoy!

Spending several years on Earth disguised as boring, basic humans was not something Y/N and the Master would normally do voluntarily, however they knew the end result would be more than worth it.

The pair had spent the past few years pretending to be agents O and N from MI6. The Master asked his wife why she chose N to replace, and her response was that together the initials spell ‘no’ and she couldn’t think of a better pairing than that for them. 

After a few years they decided to move out to the Australian outback, using the Tardis as their ‘house’, and although it was boring they did find ways to kill time together, some more creative than others.

As soon as they received the call that the Doctor would be coming to visit them, in desperate need of assistance regarding an unknown alien race threatening intelligence officer, they both nearly jumped up and down with glee. All their hard work had finally paid off.

Y/N sat in the living room, clutching a cup of tea as she thought back to their time at MI6, realising it wasn’t totally bad.

“O, N. You guys coming out for drinks tonight?” Y/N looked up from her desk, seeing agent Z standing rather close to her. She would’ve rejected in a heartbeat, however she decided she wanted to be a little mischievous. A little mischief never hurt anyone, right?

“I would love to, though I can’t be sure about O. He’s never been a social creature, isn’t that right, O?” Y/N said, raising her eyebrows as she looked over at her husband.

He clenched his jaw, knowing exactly what Y/N was doing. He hated social gatherings with the other agents, and if drinks were to be anything like last year’s Christmas party then he certainly wanted no part. However, he wasn’t letting his wife get away with anything that easily.

“Drinks sound like a lot of fun. All this work has been scrambling my brain, so some relaxation would be wonderful.” He said, giving Y/N a pointed look before turning his gaze to Z.

“Wicked. I’ll meet you lot at the pub after work, let’s say 5?” Z said, and the pair nodded, watching him leave before turning to each other.

“You are the absolute worst, you know that right? I can’t stand working in the same building as these pathetic creatures, let alone being forced to make small talk with them for hours while drinking terrible alcohol. I hate you so much.” The Master ranted, glaring at Y/N who simply smiled widely back.

“Love you too Koschei, though you should probably work on your geeky, charming demeanour. It’s supposed to be O’s trademark characteristic, right love?” Y/N said, and the Master narrowed his eyes, scoffing before looking back down at his computer, signalling that the conversation was over.

“You’ll be the death of me, Y/N. I swear.” He muttered to himself, flipping through the pages of yet another boring document as he cursed the menial nature of this job. Y/N was the only thing that made it interesting.

Y/N chuckled at the memory, remembering how her husband sat through drinks absolutely fuming, aching to leave at every possible moment. She glanced over at him now, fiddling with the computers while muttering to himself under his breath.

“You know talking to yourself is the first sign of madness, darling.” Y/N piped up, and even though his back was to her she could tell he was rolling his eyes.

 “You and I both know we are well past the first stage.” He retorted, and Y/N nodded, laughing to herself as she walked over towards him.

 “Oh I am well aware of that. I saw the look in your eyes when we watched Gallifrey burn, and it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” Y/N said, wrapping her arms around his waist as she waited for his reply.

“As flattered as I am, you’re forgetting that I’ve seen you choke a man so hard his eyes nearly popped out, and then laugh as he scuttled away broken. Now that, my dear, is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. You amaze me, honestly. I count my lucky stars every day that we were classmates in the Academy.” He said, turning around so that he could face Y/N, an adoring look in his eyes as he watched her react to his words.

 “You really know how to flatter a girl, Koschei. I just might swoon, so let’s hope you can catch me in time.” Y/N said, and although her words were playful, the Master knew that there was a strong sincerity to them.

There was a comfortable silence that quickly settled over them, and just as Y/N was about to lean in and kiss her husband, they were interrupted by the all-too-familiar sound of a Tardis landing.

“She’s here.” The Master muttered, reluctantly pulling away from his wife and straightening his vest. Y/N took in a deep breath, fiddling with the ring on her left hand. The sight of the ring brought back memories of their time on Earth, and she smiled widely as she recalled those memories.

“So, what’s the relationship like between you and O, because half of the office thinks you hate each other, and half think you’re madly in love.” Y/N jumped slightly at the sound of agent G’s voice. Y/N and G had become surprisingly close, but then again Y/N was always fonder of humans than her husband was.

“We’re actually married, have been for a while now.” Y/N said, and G’s eyes widened, a surprised laugh escaping her mouth.

 “No way! How come I don’t see a ring on that finger, N?” G said, and Y/N chuckled awkwardly, shoving her hands in her pockets.

“O’s always been a bit unorthodox, and I didn’t mind that he didn’t have a ring. It was a pretty spur of the moment thing anyway. We were really young and all we knew was that we wanted to get married and run off together, so we did.” Y/N said, smiling subconsciously as she remembered the wedding.

“So you two eloped, got it. It actually sounds kind of cute, but do you want some woman to woman advice?” G said, and Y/N nodded, wondering what she had to say.

“You should make him buy you a proper ring for you next anniversary. Surely you want a nice big rock you can show off, huh?” G said, and Y/N chuckled, nodding her head.

“What would I do without you, G?”

“You need to buy me a wedding ring.” Y/N said on their way back to the Tardis (which was currently disguised as a small house in London) and the Master stopped in his tracks.

“I’m sorry, what? Did you just say you want a wedding ring?” He said and Y/N nodded, looking him dead in the eye.

“Yeah, a wedding ring. I know Gallifreyans don’t have rings, but I was talking to G and I told her we were married and she asked why I didn’t have a ring and she said I should make you buy me one for our next anniversary. I obviously couldn’t tell her that we don’t celebrate anniversaries, but I have decided that I want a ring.” Y/N said, standing taller as she waited eagerly for a response.

“How do you propose I pay for this ring, because the ones I’ve seen are rather expensive.” He said, and Y/N raised an eyebrow, looking at him curiously.

“You’ve been looking at rings?” Y/N said, coming to a complete halt once she realised what her husband had said.

“It was meant to be a surprise, because I know how much you love stupid human things and I’m not normally a present-giver so I thought it would be nice to treat my wife to something special.” He said, and Y/N was shocked because for once she saw her husband looking somewhat sheepish.

 “You’re such a softie underneath that hard façade, darling, and I love you so much for it. Also you don’t have to get the ring for me now, do it whenever you feel ready.” Y/N said, kissing her husband briefly before pulling away.

 “Actually, I think we should go see what jewellers are open. Lord knows if I got you the wrong ring, I’d be hearing about it for the next hundred years or so, so it’s best to have you with me. Any opposition to that, love?” He said, and Y/n’s face broke out in a brilliant smile.

 “None whatsoever.”

 The sound of her husband pacing brought Y/N out of her memories and back into the real world. She made sure the collar of her shirt was fixed before letting out a sigh.

“I’d ask if you were ready for this but that’s a stupid question. You’re always ready.” Y/N said, earning a smile and a kiss on the cheek from the man standing opposite her.

“And so commences the beginning of the end. Shall we, my dear?” The Master said, holding his arm out for his wife to take. Y/N took it with a smile, ready to face the Doctor.

Jessica Jones Review

This was a request, but I will keep it relatively short because I live posted most of my issues, and it didn’t get better lol.  So basically, my issues with JJ are twofold: Jessica Jones, as a character, is not interesting. Neither is Tricia, or Jeryn, they’re just...white lol. Most, if not all their problems are self created, and everyone else has to manage the fall out.  Second, as usual, antiblack trash. JJ proves to me, yet again, having white women in the writing room does not help antiblackness and misogynoir, like, at all. In a lot of cases, it just kind of, amplifies it.  Jessica had a hard life, so she drinks, I guess. She runs a detective agency, and for no reason at all, she keeps encountering people who want to love her, but she’s too damaged by being strong and living with her best friend, Tricia, and her mother- to just, be with them. Lolll. Okay. Who fucking cares? No one, that’s who. Not even the show, because we spend an inordinate amount of time with every BUT Jessica this season.   Ok let’s start with Jerry.  

She had me cutting the fuck UP this season, because I can’t imagine being diagnosed with ALS, knowing I’m like, actually dying, then bulldozing into an old flame’s life and blowing up hers AND mine, just to...I don’t even know what the POINT was. Neither did the writers. Ol’ girl tells Jerry that her and her husband are in an open marriage. Jerry takes her on dates to the orchestra and shit. They be fucking. SO WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?? She does A LOT, just to get her away from her husband, when she could have literally taken the information Malcolm found, and just...gave it to her. LOL. Also, guy gets exposed for embezzling, and then just...live video’s him killing himself? OH MY GOD, melodramatic and contrived!!!  What is anyone’s motivations here? When we’re introduced to Jerry in s1, she just seems like a fuck girl who likes smashing hot women and lives life hard and fast (theoretically), manipulating the women in her life, but also her clients etc. Cool. She’s kind of a bitch. I’m on board with that. But then this season, she suddenly becomes obsessed with this Brown woman we’ve NEVER seen before (unless I’m wrong, cuz I hopped tf out of s1 at some point but she def wasn’t in s2), smashes into her life, destroys it, then legit stands around like..wait so you’re just gonna...leave me here? LOL SIS WTF. It’s just...I resent how this show uses Black and Brown people as sites for white female dysfunction, and their lives and everything about them, becomes a fridge for these white female protagonists’ story arcs. I can’t say this enough because it’s annoying and it ONLY happens to the nonwhite characters.  For ex. so the brown guy down the hall from Jessica is gone, now, since I guess he’s not needed to make illegal documents (oh and wasn’t he also undocumented? LOL OK JJ), but his son can still keep coming to see her. Not weird at all. Whatever.  That white guy she starts boning in s3 gets a whole ass character arc. But the brown guy down the hall was just that for like...most of s2. Any “arc” he had was directly tied to JJ’s own story and arc.  Anyway, Jeryn’s motivations were basic and murky all season. She says her life is her work, and yet she set that all on fire for some old flame booty. Lmfao. She takes on the case of a serial murderer against powered people (and I really, REALLY resent the way “powered” people are constantly used as a placeholder for racism here, because like...that’s stupid), because Jessica and Tricia upset her lmfao. Jeryn was just..doing stuff. It was so redundant, but I guess the same could be said of her last season as well. Malcolm.  He starts off like this: 

LOOK AT HOW BLACK THAT ROOM IS.  He’s working for Jeryn, making money, got himself a good girlfriend he loves, some new, Black friends, living his Black ass, sober life, doing well now that these trainwreck white women are leaving him alone.  There’s no reason at all he should still be living here.  But Jessica, FOR NO REASON AT ALL, once again, bulldozes into his life and Malcolm ends the show with, being sexually assaulted by the sex working sister of the guy Jessica is boffing, beaten up by her pimp, quits his job, cheats on his girlfriend, for NO reason at all, with the same woman who assaulted him. He even ADMITS he sabotaged their relationship at the end of the season when she comes by to get her things, but before he can explain why he sabotaged a good thing, Ms. Lady, his assaulter, comes strutting out in no pants. Ok. Again, there’s no reason why she’s in Malcolm’s life at all. They made it seem like she was going to be relevant to the plot, but the Big Evil of this season kidnaps and tortures her brother, not her. She’s utterly useless except to ruin Malcolm’s life for no reason other than I guess there’s a ban on happy Black relationships on tv.  Tricia fucks her Black trainer, because I guess, using Black men as sexual draino for their self inflicted problems is a theme on this show. At least this time they lit Luke Cage properly so he wasn’t just eyes and teeth. :/  Luke Cage makes a guest appearance in an ugly ass olive suit to be Jessica’s moral compass on how to deal with Trish. Mmmkay. 

Malcolm has nothing left I guess so he might as well also moonlight as Tricia’s moral compass, because I guess that’s all non white people are good for on this show.  And it was a waste of time, because Tricia, on a pretty serious bender to completely ruin her life for absolutely no reason at all other than she’s high on her own superiority complex, STILL turns around and murders the guy who tortured and killed her mother.  Now personally, I’m not particularly bothered that she went and got revenge. I think shows like theses equivocate these weird slippery slopes with “if I obtain revenge, I become the person who harmed me”, which is just...such a western perspective. And it’s stupid. But in this case, Tricia literally became the “Bad Guy”, just going off the rails attacking people and using a disproportionate amount of force with the help of the Human Divining Rod Jessica was boffing. Very convenient his power is seeing the evil in other people and being physically hurt by it (but not his own evil when he blackmails other people?? LOL). It was clear he existed for Jessica and Tricia’s story arcs to pivot off of, and yet he’s still handled with more interest and humanity. The show works really hard for you to feel sorry and/or conflicted about Tricia, but I don’t, because her problems aren’t real problems and she’s kind of crazy, and can’t manage to deal with her issues without ruining other people’s lives. I lived for the moments when Malcolm said: “You should just keep us on retainer, because I know you, you hurt as many people as you help.” and for that time Jessica SLAPPED the teeth out her mouth and got the phone she asked for after Tricia went on another self righteous unhinged diatribe about how great she is now because she can jump over stuff. She’s a cat now, so she’s unbeatable. Except when Jessica beats that ass  l m a o.   Anyway. Yeah, as we already knew, this show sucks. The whole Big Bad of the season was a disgruntled white man who was smarter than them and mad at women. LOL. Ok.  None of these characters are interesting or likeable. No growth. Abuse of non white people. Boring storylines, meandering plots. It’s just an overall trainwreck and I’m pretty sure this is the last season of JJ and I’m glad because we didn’t deserve to be hurt with any seasons of this. I was lowkey hoping they wouldn’t do Malcolm the way they did, but I’m not surprised. Overall -5/10

Ooh, yes, I have a lot to do today before I can do any celebrating, so naturally let’s procrastinate with the end-of-year fandom meme! THIS GOT REALLY LONG I’M SORRY.

1. Your main fandom of the year: The Good Fight, which is a madness while it’s on, always a dull aching hum in the back of my mind while it’s off, and still makes me feel instantly sick to my stomach every time I see a bit of news about it. Fun! But yeah I guess this is the only thing I participated in fandom for anyway; I wrote a little fic, I made some gifs, I tried to offer comfort to my fellow sufferers. (The show is great and most of you won’t feel sick about it, lol)

2. Your favorite film this year: Another year of not being much of a movie person--and to think 5 years ago it was everything! But favorite film in cinemas was Lady Bird; at home, I’m glad my recent Lesley problem has given me a chance to watch some great Mike Leigh films--I loved High Hopes, Another Year, and All or Nothing. 

3. Your favorite book this year: A slightly better year for books; after years of shamefully managing, like, five, I read 26 this year and, more importantly, really got back into the habit in the last few months so I think 2018 will be even better. I read many mysteries, which is always a go-to genre when I’m in a reading funk. But the very best book I read, far and away, was Cassandra at the Wedding by Dorothy Baker. Shout outs to Still She Wished for Company by Margaret Irwin, Alias Grace and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood (hmm wonder why I read those), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark (how had I never read it before???) and Excellent Women by Barbara Pym. Of the mysteries, there is a reason why And Then There Were None is revered; holy shit. The rest were just comfort food. 4. Your favorite album or song this year: Yeah if I’m embarrassed about my engagement with film and literature this year, let’s not even talk about music. I don’t think I listened to a single new (or new-to-me) thing this year. The only music I listened to at all was a playlist of old favorites I can sing along to on longer drives. And this a year with new St Vincent! Shameful. I did listen to a fuckton of podcasts. All my music time has gone to podcasts.

5. Your favorite TV show this year: Honestly, The Good Fight. And if you want a ridiculous list of honorable mentions, here are all of the currently-airing shows I adored this year in approximate descending order of my love for them: The Good Place, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Harlots, Grace and Frankie, Catastrophe, Feud, Big Little Lies, American Vandal, One Mississippi, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Search Party, Insecure, Alias Grace, The Handmaid’s Tale, Transparent, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Orphan Black, Broad City, GLOW, Better Things, Stranger Things, I Love Dick, Veep, The Bold Type, Younger, One Day at a Time, Schitt’s Creek, Jane the Virgin, The Americans, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Speechless, Colony, The Worst Witch. Among older shows, I discovered To the Manor Born and watched it like seven times in a brief but heady love affair this summer, and The Good Life, too. I rewatched Ugly Betty and As Time Goes By. Oh, and while I guess it doesn’t count for 2017 shows, I honestly adored Mum. And had a weird week where I snarfed down a whole season of Strictly Come Dancing. OK that’s probably enough about television. Clearly, television is what keeps me from engaging with any other form of media. :|

6. Your favorite Tumblr this year: I LOVE ALL MY MUTUALS EQUALLY AND ARDENTLY, even if I’m pretty bad at keeping up conversations with you all xo

7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year: Can I use this space to talk about my year in situations? Obviously in these last weeks I’ve been losing my fucking mind over Lesley Manville, who is a sleeper situation, but clearly a Code Red Level One now. I also had some delightful times with Penelope Keith and Raquel Cassidy, who occupy that delicious but not all-consuming space in my mind that Lesley once did. I almost had a thing with Ashley Jensen, but I guess Penelope stole me away before that got off the ground. And Christine Baranski is clearly my forever girl. I didn’t think my fickle ass could ever love anyone so deeply for so long, but here we are. 

8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year: Ummm...? I can’t really think of any, although I will say it was frustrating when all I wanted was a good mystery book series to lose myself in and I had to toss aside many half-read or after the first book. (If I’d finished all the books I started this year, I would have finished my reading challenge and then some.) But of those the biggest frustration was, despite enjoying the Agatha Raisin tv series because Ashley Jensen, and enjoying the Agatha Raisin audiobooks on a different level because Penelope Keith, how honestly terrible I found the Agatha Raisin books. So instead I read summaries of them all because I was weirdly invested in that ship for a hot minute, lol. Not worth it. Please come back, tv show.

9. Your TV boyfriend of the year: NONE but ugh I still have embarrassing Gary Cole feelings, and also Peter Mullan’s character on Mum is allowed to date my girlfriend, yeah. 

10. Your TV girlfriend of the year: So many??? AUDREY FFORBES-HAMILTON is all goals, Diane Lockhart forever and always, yeah I want to softly cuddle and bathe in the luminous glow of Cathy on Mum, Hecate Hardbroom, both Grace and Frankie, and I had a dream about awkwardly trying to date Tig Notaro, so.

11. Your biggest squee moment of the year: DIANE TURNED OFF THE CAR AND WENT BACK WITH HIM!!! God damn it, I am still so fucking embarrassing about this ship. Also, so many Audrey/Richard moments. I keep thinking I cannot fall in love with another het ship, but if you make mah girl all googly-eyed, I’m probably gonna be there for it. 

12.  Your most missed old fandom: Nothing buuuut if it counts I did really feel sorry about the Major Crimes fandom after they fucking fucked Mary/Sharon over, and kind of gleefully monitored the carnage from a safe remove. Honestly so terrible, glad I got out of that mess years ago.

13. Your fandom you haven’t tried yet, but want to? Hmmmm I don’t know? I feel like if there were anything major I would be on it already. I know what I like and I do not delay gratification. But if anything, I think I should probably watch Janet King very soon? Also I’m hovering on the point of diving into The Crown; I did try the first episode for Harriet reasons, but could nooooot get into it. But a number of friends/culture bloggers I admire love it. So I may give it another go. If only in anticipation of Olivia Colman!queen yas!

14. Your biggest anticipation of the New Year: P H A N T O M T H R E A D and seeing Lesley on stage doing Long Day’s Journey :3 and the return most especially of The Good Fight and Grace and Frankie. I also do very seriously intend to diversify my fandom interests in 2018: read more, watch more films, listen to more new music. If I have one concrete resolution, it’s that I will see every movie directed by a woman that comes through town--I mean, of course, through the good indie theater, anyway. I’m setting a reading challenge at an ambitious-by-recent-standards 50 books and intend to meet it. And I want to get better at focusing? If I’m watching a show or a movie, I should really watch the show or movie, not play on my phone half the time. Maybe get better at documenting my experiences and reactions. And continue enjoying this Lesley thing until she wears me out.

I love talking about my spells!

Hey City Goers! So, Dracula told me all about all this magic talk and I thought I’d jump in on the train too! So I got ahold of the little document DSEM wrote (which is hilarious btw) and now I get to tell all of you about what I can do! It’s like free advertising! Normally Dracula is sooo adamant about not letting me advertise on the blog... But now I get a chance to chat about what I’ve got! So listen up, everybody, Night Feather’s magic is going to blow you away u3u~

So for starters, here’s the little blurb DSEM wrote about me.

                                                  Mod Night Feather “Night Feather is assumed to be a woman somewhere in her late twenties to early thirties. She has stated some sort of connection to political figures, though exactly what kind is ambiguous. She has stated multiple times to be a witch and is thought to be a particularly well studied one. As such, she should be considered a threat. She strongly sides with supernaturals, as most of the other Conspiracy City Bloggers do. She is assumed to have been born and raised in Sunseong City.”

I mean, yeah no duh. I’m a witch, check. Thirties, check. Connected to politics, check. Supernatural supporter, check... They forgot to mention beautiful and powerful though! Man that’s rude. Oh well! I guess they wouldn’t know from my lil’ profile pics with the eyes all blurred out.

Alright soooo... spells and magic time! Let me just crack my knuckles and get to typing~!

“Ward Crafting: Night Feather has stated multiple times that she is incredibly adept at the creation of various wards. Benvolio has also stated to have wards given to him by Night Feathers, as has Dr@cula. As such, it is assumed that Night Feather can make a wide variety of very powerful wards.”

I don’t feel a need to elaborate on this too much, but yes! I’m very good at making wards and I can make them in trinket form or as tattoos (Though my tattoo designs are all simple or flowers :3). Most of my wards are very strong but they take some touching up here and there.

“Potion Crafting: While this is mostly suspicion, Night Feather has stated to make ‘tonics’ multiple times on the Conspiracy City blog. Because of this, it is assumed that she has some knowledge of potion making.”

My tonics are actually just alcohol. I mean, I can make potions, but I call them potions. The tonics I talk about on the blog are literally mixing alcohol.... Wow DSEM.  Wow. lol. Aaanyway, my potions are way better than my alcohol, so they’re pretty worthwhile! I’ve figured out how to make a lot of different kinds that can make... well, most things happen! It’s neat and it only takes a little magic touch (And sometimes Dracula’s blood... Or Benvolios... Or Keysmash’s...).

“Plant Manipulation: Night Feather has stated on multiple occasions that she can easily grow and create plant life from a somewhat proper environment. She has been stated to keep a large number of carnivorous plants around and these plants are also thought to be far larger than the average plants of their species.”

That’s right! I love my plants. I garden sometimes when I’m home and then I also grown things for Benni because he sorts could use a salad sometimes, I think (don’t try to make Dracula eat one, though. He throws a fit!) I have a bunch of Pitcher Plants and Venus Fly traps that I work with most of the time, though. My biggest one is big enough to eat people (don’t worry, she doesn’t). Her name is “Barbara”! I feed her steaks ~ <3

“Telekinesis: There have been multiple posts on the Conspiracy City blog detailing Night Feather’s ability to lift objects with her mind. This is said to be many rather heavy objects, though the level of control over this ability seems to be wildly overstated by Night Feather herself.”

Ow are you calling me a braggart? Well, whatever. Tbh, I’m pretty good with my telekinesis. I mean, I can’t lift really heavy stuff. I don’t go around lifting cars or anything because that would be super weird, but I can lift a person, you know? Most people, at least. I don’t usually use this for much, though. I just lift things that are far away so I don’t have to stand up when working and stuff...

“Shadow Manipulation: The level of detail on this is somewhat ambiguous, but Night Feather has stated to be able to move and control shadows to a small extent.”

It’s ambiguous because I hardly ever use it! Shadows are too edgy for me... Anyway, I do have Shadow Manip. I can like... drag them around and hide in them. It’s soooo lame though. I usually just use it on Benni to make him feel cool when he’s trying to be stealthy. I mean, I can like... cloak myself but I don’t really see a reason to?

“Sunlight Generation: Night Feather has stated only once on the Conspiracy City blog that she can “make ‘herself’ shine like the sun”. This is assumed to be some form of sunlight generation.”

Uhh... I think that was in reference to my stage presence? But uh, yeah. I can sorta make some sun out of my hands? But it’s actually a ward I got from Keysmash... sooooo..... yeah.

“Metal Manipulation: Moving metal in a liquid form and then re-solidifying it has been mentioned by Night Feather multiple times. While this is frequently used as a tool for making weaponry, she states to also be able to use it in combat more easily than one might expect.”

Oh! Oh my gosh I looove this spell! So it’s just like they wrote it but it’s cool because i can solidify just enough of it that it’s still liquid enough to move! So it’s really neat. I can used it to stab people! Once, I used to to pin Benvolio to a wall until he got really mad at me. Just to test the spell, of course!

“Pyrokinesis: Night Feather claims to be able to manipulate flames to some extent. This is thought to require a source.”

Oooo! Good Job DSEM! You got this one right! It does require a source, a lighter, in specific! I can make the flame much larger but if I want to have one I have to light it up on might lighter first! It’s not too big of a pain though, and once I light the fire on my lighter I can basically send a huuuge fire ball at anyone! So... yeah. It’s pretty cool.

“Summon Companion: The companions Night Feather claims to be able to summon are the other three members of the Conspiracy City blog.”

I mean, yeah. It’s kind of important for me? I’m not physically the strongest so sometimes I need a bit of back up. Plus, I have work and the rest of the boys (and Keysmash) just uh... don’t? So they can do more than me due to time restraints and all. I have to set up a little summoning circle first though... it’s kinda lame.

“Greater Illusions: Night Feather claims to be able to create greater illusions, much like a fae would. She states, however, that the fae on the blog is far better with illusions than she is.”

This took sooo long to learn you guys. I had to study for like years to get to be able to do greater illusions at all! I can do them okay now, but Keysmash makes me look like a chump! I mostly use them on people who need to not see something, though. I’m great at omitting things, but not as great at like... making things appear.

Sooo... DSEM missed a lot? And I’m sad? So here’s what else I can do just for all of you!

Magic Sensing:  What it sounds like. I learned how to feel magic energy! I’m pretty good at it, but I still can’t like... tell what kind of fae Keysmash is? Lame?

Sense Obscuration: That’s what I call it at least! I can make people blind, deaf, mute, numb... IT’s useful most of the time! I can also just blur vision or make smells feel weird though. It’s never permanent (unless I want it to be~)

Emotion Inducement: Oh oh! So basically, what I do is I look at a person and I mumble some words and I can make them feel either happy, angry, or sad! I can’t do other emotions which sucks, but I’m getting better! Right now, I like to use it to make Benvolio laugh sometimes because he’s such a stick in the mud... And I use it to make Dracula laugh too! Because he’s too little to get so mad (sorry drac I know you’re older than me TT).

Summon Hyena Pack: I have twelve of them! They all have names and most of them are girls. They love me and I love them. They’re easier to summon than any of the boys and Keysmash too, so if I need help in a pinch I like to bring them in.

Shapeshifting: I use this to get around when I’m feeling lazy! Sometimes, you just want to be a cat, you know? Or a panther. Or a dog. Or a peacock...

Hypnotic Voice: It just puts people in a trance where they wanna do what I say. I like it because it makes things easier in fights. I just have to manage to say the spell words first, oops~

Madness Inducement: I can make people hallucinate and start like... going pretty mad. I used it on a witch once and she became a warlock. I feel a little bad about it.

Necromancy: I can res dead people and make zombies like in video games! Dracula thinks this is a cool skill so I usually reserve it for using around him!

Teleportation: Just for convenience. I can teleport to a bunch of little sigils I have drawn around the city. Don’t look for them. You wont’ find them.

asks for fanfic writers.

Well, I did number 4 over here, and number 31 over here, but!

44. do you write linear or do you write future scenes if you feel like it?

I prefer to write linearly, but it often doesn’t get to work out that way. I also outline things a lot, but not always linearly either, and I do a lot of early draft scenes before I even know where it’s going to fit into things because I have an idea and want to get it down right away quick.

Like, one example of this happening lately was a direct result of me trying to come up with a superhero team name that hasn’t been used already and getting so frustrated that I just went, ���Okay, screw it, I’m not looking at this anymore tonight or I’ll just give up and name them The Fighting Mongooses — which isn’t even my joke to use, it’s an old Futurama joke.”

The scene idea that grew out of that is basically my three main mutant weirdos — Seb, Lucy, and Josie — trying to figure out a team name. It is pretty much entirely Lucy’s idea because all three of them are sorta vaguely related to the FBI’s department of mutant affairs, but Seb and Lucy are recently awakened mutants who are sort of on a trial run and not planning to stay with the FBI in an official capacity,

and Josie is stuck filling a few different roles for S.T.R.O.M.A (primarily that of media liaison and de facto team therapist) as a result of how they got recruited in the first place (which involved them accidentally getting on the wrong side of what they were allowed to do with the, “I’m a mutant but I really just want to live my life and not be a bother to anyone, superheroic shit sounds really stressful, let’s not” license, and getting caught, and being handed an offer that basically went, “Hey, come be on our team on a consultancy basis and we’ll make the censures all go away”)

—but none of them really likes working with S.T.R.O.M.A, for several reasons, and Lucy, bless her heart, thinks they should have a team and work together to be heroes.

This is a Thing that some super-powered people do, and teams are registered and licensed like mutants are in general — which isn’t actually sinister so much as tedious, like?

It’s a fair point that, when we’re talking about people who can breathe fire and shoot fricking laser beams out of their eyes and whatnot, then that is not really the same thing as the government trying to make people register on the basis of their race/ethnicity, religion, sexuality, etc. Like, yes, a lot of the rhetoric that can be pulled out in justification of this can be Bad, but we are talking about people who can exhale toxic gases, mind-control people, shoot freaking eye lasers, walk through walls, etc.

That’s all stuff that has legitimate, immediate potential to harm people, and a potential way to compromise — trying to keep everyone safer without infringing unfairly on the rights and civil liberties of mutants — is to treat it like getting a driver’s license. Like, acknowledge that most people didn’t ask for mutant superpowers and it’s not something that they can help (but it’s also a little more complicated than, “you have the mutant X gene so it’s mutant superpowers fun-time, whee”), don’t blame them (especially in the cases where really young kids have freak accidents with powers that no one suspected they had, and especially because there’s a tendency for that to happen in situations with kids who are being bullied or abused)

—but also acknowledge that these powers do have the potential to do a lot of harm, both to the people who have them and to others, and try to do whatever possible to make sure that resources are provided for mutants so that they can learn to control their powers and have the licensing laws in place to make sure that they get said resources. (This is obviously VERY ideal and it doesn’t usually work out so neatly because we’re talking about the U.S. government trying to do things, and there are so many factors — money,  institutionalized isms, public opinion, grassroots campaigns on all sides, fuckery in Congress or the different state and local legislatures, list goes on — that make this go other than as planned on paper. But in an ideal world, this is how it would play out.)

So, in this world, getting a mutant license can be done at the DMV or the local Secretary of State’s office (if you live in some place like Michigan where we’re a bunch of hipster fucks who refuse to just have a DMV), and there are some tests to go through, to prove that you’re not going to lose control of your powers in potentially lethal ways and make sure you know certain legal rules (e.g., “hey, we get it that you did not ask to have mind control powers, but using them to make someone have sex with you? That’s rape. Don’t do that, rape is wrong and you’ll go to prison”).

There are more tests to go through if you want to get the superhero license, but it’s still more comparable to getting a license to drive a motorcycle or a school bus than any of the other metaphors for registration that we’ve seen in different X-Men stories.

Some teams are even Big Deals and have corporate sponsorship and everything. Their members are basically celebrities (at least, the ones who are Big Deals on the level of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Iron Man, Ozymandias, or the old school Minutemen from Watchmen), and whether or not any of them are actually good at being superheroes anymore is a matter of some debate.

But in fairness, the smaller deal heroes affiliated with these teams are usually still doing the work, even if tools like Doctor Delphi pretty much have a few token acts of heroism, show up to NYC Pride every year, shoot commercials, and compulsively document their lives on Instagram, without doing any work that makes a meaningful difference at all.

Also, superhero comics and their related adaptations are still A Thing.

Like, I see where Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons were coming from by replacing the superhero comics with pirate comics — but I could also see people keeping superhero comics around even with irl mutant superheroes. You’d probably also see ex-heroes making memoir-style graphic novels, and not-that-thinly veiled versions of irl heroes showing up in the Batman or Hulk comics.

S.T.R.O.M.A has an entire sub-team whose primary job is going over comics, movies, YA lit, and all the rest to make sure that no one’s using, “lol fiction” to spill information that has a security clearance attached. They have a picture of Stan Lee on a dartboard because the sheer number of times they’ve had to investigate him is ridiculous. Their counterparts at MI6 have three filing cabinets just for JKR.

But Lucy is a really pumped up about this team idea, so she’s trying to get Seb (who is less than entirely jazzed about this concept but refuses to just let Lucy go do the thing on her own) and Josie (who has mixed feelings about the whole thing but is curious enough to come along for the ride) to help her come up with team names. Mostly, this involves the two of them shooting her ideas down as such:

Lucy: *suggests a name*

Seb: Marvel already has one of those.

Josie: Also, there are two real-life teams registered with that name and I think four different individual vigilantes.

Lucy: *suggests a different name*

Seb: DC got there first.

Josie: There aren’t any real world teams with that name, but it has been one of the most popular names independent vigilante names for five years running.

Lucy: *suggests, “The Crusaders”*

Seb: Ehhh, do we really want to invoke the Crusades? I mean, okay, the word sounds cool, but the Crusades were military campaigns of unlawful conquest and Islamophobic genocide. Ffs, did Sister Mary Ignatius stop teaching that in her history classes after I got forced out of St. Andrew’s or what?

Lucy: You actually paid attention in Sister Mary Ignatius’s history classes? Like, enough to remember them?

Seb: You didn’t?

Lucy: I had better things to do than give that old bat more than the bare minimum, Bastian. Like, y’know, extracurricular community college science classes because the science curriculum at St. Andrew’s was bullshit—

Josie: Let’s stay on topic. So, there’s already a fictional group that’s called the Crusaders, plus two real world teams, six indie vigilantes who call themselves. ‘the Crusader,’ and it’s also regularly found in weird compound names. I wish that I could bleach all memories of Captain Dick-Cheese Crusader from my mind, but alas, it doesn’t work that way.

And so on and so forth. Until they finally hit the point of Lucy going, “FINE. If you don’t like any of MY ideas, one of YOU suggest some already. jfc, you’re older than I am, why do I have to tell you both to be more proactive”

So, Seb suggests, “The Apostates” because it is the first word that comes to his mind aaaand…

Josie: While I am pleased to heard Seb suggest something first, there’s already a team registered by that name. They’re a bunch of alumni or former affiliates of Lehrer and Woodham who had various kinds of falling outs with the good Doctors, or had Yael and Elizabeth kick them off one of The Wardens or one of their other teams for some reason. Most of them are actually lovely people, but the one who calls himself Bocca Lupo is the woooooorst.

Seb: …Personal experience?

Josie: His civvies name is Danny Walker. He used to be a fashion photographer before he discovered his powers. He was my freshman year roommate at Pratt. We dated for a while in senior year—

Lucy: And he dumped you so now you’re bitter and being a pain in the ass about Seb’s suggestion because you’re still mad at him?

Josie: Oh, no. I dumped him. He wouldn’t stop acting like eating disorders are a joke after I told him that I have one to try and make him stop being like that to one of our classmates.

And then there was a bunch of backstory-expounding from Josie that tbh, isn’t going to end up in the full draft of this scene, ever, since it really needs to be spaced out more and woven into things a bit more naturally — but the endgame for the moment is still that any team names related to, “apostate” or, “apostasy” are vetoed in full because wow holy shit, Josie’s ex is a douchebag and that he’s one of the major players in the Brooklyn-based Apostates is really Not A Cool Thing

And I have no idea where this is going to fit into the story or when but

It’s a scene that I like and drafted out in my borderline-illegible longhand so I wouldn’t forget the idea
