carrying on from my last post: here’s some advice for people who don’t want to/ can’t go vegetarian or vegan, but want to help reduce animal suffering. 

disclaimers: i am fully aware that not all of these will be options for everybody reading this. i live in the UK, so not all of this will be applicable to other countries. i’m not saying you have to do any of these things; i’m just trying to give information to those who want it.

meat-free cooking:

- look up ‘vegetarian recipes for meat lovers’. going from steak and potatoes to lentil salad feels weird for many people, and that’s completely fine. there are lots of meals that feel more accessible to people not used to eating meat-free diets.

- mock meats like quorn or linda mccartney are delicious, but expensive. if you’re able to buy them and sub them once or twice a week, that’s great. if you aren’t, lots of supermarkets offer own-brand versions. tesco’s vegan mince is much better than quorn’s and you can buy three bags for £4. i can usually get 4-6 servings out of a bag (and i don’t eat small portions lmao)

- there’s a reason lentils, rice and beans come up a lot in these discussions: they are cheap as hell, especially if you’re able to bulk-buy. frozen and canned vegetables are also genuinely completely fine. ignore the lifestyle sites that say you need to buy organic asparagus. 

- there are lots of great sites that offer cheap recipes, which are often meat-free because, well, meat is expensive. Cooking On A Bootstrap (formerly ‘A Girl Called Jack’) is amazing, and Eat Cheap and Healthy often has good recipes (if you ignore the comments section where everyone squabbles about what is and isn’t healthy)

- look. don’t try and cook tofu until you’ve tried it somewhere else and know what it’s meant to taste like. tofu is a notorious pain-in-the-ass to cook correctly. if you buy it and try and eat it as-is, you’re going to hate it and have a bad time. try getting it at chinese restaurants or similar first- they know how to make it delicious.

what to eat, what not to eat

- try recipes from other cultures. asian cuisines in particular have a huge number of vegetarian dishes, especially indian. vegetarian food does not need to be bland and flavourless!

- if you’re in the UK, mcdonalds fries are vegetarian, and they offer a bean burger/ bean wrap. burger king also offers bean burgers; KFC has no veggie options (other than sides). Nandos has some really good veggie options, as does GBK. look up your local fast food and figure out which places offer veggie options that you could give a go once in a while.

- if possible, cut down on beef specifically. beef production requires a huge amount of water and uses more land than all other domesticated animals and crops combined. My partner and I cut beef out a few years ago, and we don’t miss it.

labels and symbols:

- look up what various symbols and logos mean. if you’re in the UK, this guide is really good. understand what labels mean past just ‘free range’, and keep an eye out for intentionally misleading labelling: ‘cage free’ does not mean free-range.

- similarly, please don’t forget about fish. overfishing is a huge problem, along with bycatch and environmental effects. look for the MSC symbol when buying fish, and download their ‘Good Fish Guide’. it lets you quickly see which species are okay to eat, which are okay on occasion, and which you should try and avoid

- again, if you have enough money and space to be able to bulk buy, contact local high welfare farms and see what they have available. often you can pay a lot of money upfront for half a pig which can then make a lot of meals

lifestyle stuff:

- look into Meat Free Monday or flexitarianism. these are concepts that involve just... eating less meat. not eating no meat, but eating less.

- on a low FODMAP diet? here are some recipes that won’t hurt your stomach

- look into ‘moral offsetting’. it’s a pretty simple concept: when you do something ‘morally dubious’ (their wording, not mine), you ‘offset’ it in some way. the standard is donating to charity. i have a recurring monthly donation set up to Compassion In World Farming for this reason.

- following on from that, if you’d like to donate to an animal charity, look into effective altruism and use a charity evaluator to make sure your donation is going somewhere that will use it well

- don’t forget about leather and suede! look into alternatives to these if you can.

- follow and support lab-grown meat! this is a really exciting innovation that’s going to change a lot of things for the better. 

- look for people to follow and promote. Jacy Reese is a very cool guy- check out his TED Talk and twitter pages too.

- educate yourself, and educate others. read posts like this, and read the sources, and think about whether you agree with me or disagree with me or have a different suggestion. read about the meat and dairy industries, read about alternatives, read about problems with both. don’t just accept what you’ve always believed: learn more, teach more, and be willing to change and grow.

woman travels to bali for fun for 6 months. pandemic said you sure you wanna come back? *covid bitch* so the indonesian gov. allowed foreigner to extend their stay despite higher and higher cases of covid rising right? okay all good right... except american women decides to LITERALLY SELL A BOOK ON HOW TO GET THAT GOOD LIFE IN BALI.

is getting that good life controversial? whyy ? well im glad you asked! in her book/ebook, she gives ppl tips and tricks on how to bypass government visas and restrictions, quoting that its the most queer-friendly place ever for cheap and all that.

ppl BIG TIME MAD (shuu they should be ok) because the dripping privilege. but like the hilarious thing is... people are getting big mad in like 2 different ways:

 Indonesians are bigmad because being queer in any case is still punishable, encourages gentrification of an already heavy-tourism arae (Bali yall is hEAVY on tourism which is ok until it pushes out locals) and she wasn’t paying taxes in Bali and only in the US (bruhhh how you live in a different countryyyy howww -- also the US and Indonesia have a tax treaty to avoid double taxing).

The rest of the group (ie not indonesian) are mad because they thing its a race thing and this American woman is only targeted because she’s Black. Citing that everyone else is doing it but when she does it, it blows up to bigger proportions

Hell yeah they got every fucking right. Indonesia just made it off the thirdworld country list <10 years ago. There area still places that barely have running water. Which.. you know... US people you understand right? Remember Michigan? So when an American citizen overstays their visa and writes a damn book about it, promoting all BS, you gon feel some type of way.

That BS about the LGBT stuff? It’s so close to being fake news. Indonesia as a country is ranges from anti-gay to homophobic (this is very important because there are literally laws that punish queerness with death and then there are societal situations where its known but often ignored or shunned away-- can’t believe those are the only two options). Bali? Nah son her saying Bali is LGBT friendly is like saying only Brooklyn is LGBT friendly. It doesn’t make sense and frankly, its pretty fucking insulting to those who aren’t able to come out (!!! death !! yall remember!!) or are but are completely shunned from their friends and family.

As an Indo-American who has gone back to her country, I can tell you for a fact that this is an unfortunate truth. Your passport carries your privilege. Yesterday night my cousin called the cops on my godfather because he was threatening to kill us, and now he’s left us. Hey Steph!!! It’s good to be introduced to you! Though of course I wish it was under easier circumstances; ones not as painful and complicated as what you’re going through... you truly shouldn’t have to suffer like this.  I can only imagine what this is all like for you, and though I’m not a professional by any means, I have experienced this sort of feeling of not being able to forgive a family member for certain things, and of feeling alone, alienated, and scared for similar reasons.  I also know what it’s like to have mixed-feelings about fathers or father-figures.  I lost my own father a few years ago to a massive heart attack related to his life-long alcoholism.  He was decidedly absent for most of my life, which bred a type of loneliness that I’m also seeing in your message here.

I can definitely share my perspectives with you on all this, and I’d really just like to offer you any support I can here! You have the full right to receive support from others -- from friends, family members, professionals, and anyone else who isn’t so unfairly biased against you (due to the things your godfather has been saying to them).  You are not doing something wrong, Steph, and you definitely don’t deserve this hatred.

You also don’t have to forgive your godfather; that’s not wrong of you.  You especially shouldn’t pre-emptively forgive him if you’re not ready to -- even if you never truly forgive him, that’s completely fine! Despite some popular belief, forgiving others for deeply hurting you is not the only way to heal from what they did to you.  It can certainly be helpful for some individuals, but it’s not for everyone -- and no one should ever be pressured or made to feel like they have to forgive, when in reality, they don’t.  No one is owed forgiveness.

Having all this occur when you, your mother, and your cousin are struggling to find a stable home -- in addition to processing all the death and loss you’ve been surrounded by recently -- would only add to the terror that you’re feeling, I’d suspect... all these fears, and all this hurt makes total sense, and it’s perfectly healthy (though extremely painful, I realize) to acknowledge the emotions and thoughts that are washing over you.  

So basically, it’s crucial to reach out to others and request support if you can! On that note, thank you for talking to me.  I can imagine this isn’t at all easy to share with others, and though it may sound cliche, it was genuinely courageous of you to send these messages! It’s a sign of immense strength to seek help and feedback, in any and all ways.  A lot of people don’t do that, no matter how bad things get.  They suffer alone, and that suffering gets worse and worse as a result. 

Because you’re no longer able to pay for therapy, it’s especially important that you still talk to anyone you trust (who also doesn’t charge a fee).  That could be with friends at school, friends online who you trust, people on specific, reputable forums (who are going through similar things), and even with crisis centres who can help you cope in the moment, and can hopefully offer further practical and psychological resources.

It’s very strange, and awful, to me that your godfather is accusing you and your cousin of being abusive, when he was threatening to kill you, your cousin, and your mother... threats of harm like this, whether they are carried out or not, are abusive.  I’m hoping that some of the family members he’s been spreading all that nastiness to end up questioning him; talking to you, your mom, and your cousin, and getting the full account of events (and not just your godfather’s one-sided version of them).

Steph, it is not -- nor will it ever be -- your fault that your godfather made the decisions he did, and that certain family members have decided to just take his word without talking to you, your cousin, and your mother first.  You didn’t do anything to deserve the threat of death, you don’t ever deserve to be without a stable home, and you don’t deserve to not have access to therapy! You never, ever deserve to be harmed this way by someone who you love, and who you placed such full trust in.

Around a month ago already my passenger side car window got shattered. It's still intact, just completely spidered out.
