Edwin, Monty, and Charles (Hell AU)

“You have to be quiet,” Edwin instructs, quick and quiet as can be, but in a voice that trembles just as his hand does, shaking in a way that Charles has never known Edwin to do. “We cannot risk it coming to get either of us again.”

“Either of us?” Charles asks, keeping his voice to a whisper, because Edwin might be scared but fear doesn’t make you wrong- it makes you a better fucking survivor. It’s how Charles lasted in his father’s home for so long over the years, learning exactly how to keep his head down. It didn’t save him from beatings- nothing could make his father happy- but it kept them to as much of a minimum as possible.

For some reason, Edwin nods down at the bird in his lap, a brief, sharp motion, before looking up at Charles with big, bright eyes. “Charles, what the absolute hell are you doing down here?” 

Charles can’t help a fond smile, despite all the grime and blood and distant, demonic screams. Only Edwin Payne could manage to make a whisper so sharp. “I came to rescue you, mate. Someone’s gotta do it.”

But Edwin, to Charles’ shock, rolls his eyes. “God save me from heroes,” he hisses.
