amaya went home and her aunt starting freaking out

idk if I want the aunt to say it directly to her or like to a friend on the phone that amaya hears, but her aunt says something along the lines of "scar" and "uncivilized" and "ugly" (I imagine what amaya heard was a distortion of what her aunt actually says but I degress)

since then, amaya makes sure to be as safe as she can and not get scars.

she eventually gets one on her leg, but she can cover it with pants

so she changes the "Don't get hurt" philosophy to "only get hurt where you can hide that scar"

so she is the most careful of the three

but she has multiple scars around her body

King Runaan of the Moonshadow Elves

This post will have several sections. They’ll be as follows.

Runaan is a king, and Rayla is his heir (this post)

Runaan had to confess his love first, because he is the king

Ethari’s entire skill set is now dedicated to keeping the king of the Moonshadow elves alive

1. Runaan is the king of the Moonshadow elves

Angst Rating: 1/10

This theory came to me with one specific image in mind, while talking theories with @kotikala​ yesterday. But it got anchored by two other things. Rayla’s grumpy face behind Runaan’s back in S1E2 when he called her the fastest and strongest of all of us, and the fact that Runaan has a 3D model with a post-battle torn vest, and another with no shirt. These three things. Plus a year and a half’s worth of theories--many of which I had lying around with no bigger picture in mind until last night--and rewatches. I feel simultaneously giddy and stupid as hell.

That one image was Runaan’s shoulder markings.

They are in fact like Aaravos’s crown shape, with a round moon instead of a second diamond,

but not because Runaan’s markings reference Aaravos. Because Runaan is royalty just like Aaravos.

This double diamond shape appears in Katolis, too, on the armor of the king’s army and even Callum’s scarf.

It’s also right there on top of Khessa’s crown, looking very similar to Runaan’s markings, with a round disc replacing one of the diamonds. In this case, it represents the sun instead of the moon.

Runaan doesn’t wear a crown anytime we see him. He might not have a crown at all, since he’s a warrior king who has “seen his share of hardship and war.” But he paints that symbol on his arms and wears his rank as king for everyone to see. He might never have had an older symbol on his arms at all, since he was born to this.

His face markings are the shadow of an assassin hood. He never needs to wear his because he’s internalized his duty so well. And he has probably had these markings since he was tiny, because there was never any question about his future.

Kings generally come with castles. This is Runaan’s castle. 

A thousand-year-old tree near the edge of the village. It was probably either planted or reshaped when the Moonshadows had to move eastward out of Katolis following the Merciful Compromise, and it’s been the royal dwelling ever since. Ah, tradition. This wasn’t Ethari’s home because it had space for a forge in it. It’s Runaan’s home, and his home is literally his castle. (How many levels does it have in there, and does anyone else live with them? I have such questions)

Moonshadow elves are forest elves at heart. Runaan lives in a tree, while his people live in ordinary houses. 

The tree house is the best and brightest home any of them could imagine. So Runaan’s tunic bears the symbol of a tree trunk on it. He is the stable trunk of his people, and they branch from him and the anchoring stability he provides. His tree tunic is his royal robes of office, marked with the symbol of his (literal and metaphoric) house.

The Moon Druid link has been pretty well theorized in general, if not in specific, before now, but here’s a summary: the Moon Druids of old used to live in Katolis’s forest, around the Moon Nexus. When the border was drawn 1000 years ago after the Merciful Compromise was suggested by the daughter of the Moonshadow ruler, the elves had to leave. They destroyed the Nexus, left a guardian, and settled/resettled in the Moonshadow Forest, reestablishing their rule in the east and taking up the dark and sacred duty of protecting Xadia from dangerous humans by assassinating them, so their merciful agreement to spare all the humans never brought disaster. 

When Runaan took his team back west, he performed the binding ceremony in an ancient grove with six trees and a moon-rune-shaped water border. It was his own people’s ancient grove.

The Moon Druids stood like this.

And so does Runaan.

His accent and Lujanne’s are the only two British voices among all the Scottish Moonshadows. One of them guards the Moon Nexus, where the Moon Druids used to live. The other is currently ruling from the Silvergrove.

The Silvergrove is the only place labeled in the Moonshadow forest. On a map, if you’re only going to have one city, you label the capital. I didn’t understand the relationship between the Silvergrove, the assassins, and the human kingdoms before. I thought it was a border village. But it’s deep in the forest, at its heart.

Runaan didn’t come to the Silvergrove to train to be an assassin. He was born there. The Silvergrove and the assassins were always the intimately connected. The Moon Druids became assassins to uphold their sacred duty. Wherever they live, that’s where the assassins train.

Runaan was once drawn younger in this outfit. It’s blurry but the white text reads “younger Runaan?”

It got morphed into someone else. But look at this dynamic. This is clearly a Moonshadow leader and his close ally—his son. His son the assassin.

The Moonshadow staff used to look like this a thousand years ago.

Then it got stabby.

Now it looks like this.

My heart for Xadia, indeed. That line might very well be reserved only for the ruler and his heir to swear.

Runaan’s bio says he “cares deeply for his people.” That means all of the Moonshadow elves. And he’s called, in full, Runaan of the Moonshadow Elves. That’s a title.

Rayla gave her name to Sol Regem in that format, too. Rayla of the Moonshadow Elves. Because Rayla is Runaan’s legal heir. He’s a gay elf and won’t be having his own kids. So he chose his best friends’ child to follow him in succession. He’s been training his own replacement since she could walk.

Rayla is the Moonshadow Princess and she has her own title.

I think part of the reason I didn’t see Runaan for the king he was, or even the prince I used to think he was, had to do with my assumptions that any Moonshadow ruler would preside over a community similar in setup to Khessa and Harrow. Big, obvious, powerful. Meant to be seen. But that’s not the Moonshadow way. Even though Runaan’s tree castle is literally all of those things. I just wasn’t speaking Moonshadow fluently enough yet.

Runaan’s rule, and the Moonshadows in general, really give me a Viking-era England feel. England was comprised of several small kingdoms before the time of Alfred the Great. They never covered too much territory, and they weren’t very centrally organized. You might get a handful of heavily walled towns, and if there was trouble, all the citizens outside the walls would scamper in for safety. (Imagine the Silvergrove’s moondome functioning like the dome over Wakanda’s capital city when Thanos’s minions attacked in Infinity War. Nice, huh?)

Runaan has that local-king feel. His position is a martial one. He leads from the front. He’s very focused on upholding his duty, not looking cool in furs and crowns or whatever. He either gave his own oath to the Dragon King and Queen, or he was already bound to a pre-existing oath, Oath of Féanor-style, and that promise rules his life. His life, but not his heart. So he lives in his quiet little village with his cute craftsman husband and all his people and his blood promise, and he trains with focused dedication to uphold his people’s honor with maximum efficiency and safety for his own assassins.

Things that hit differently now

Amaya hates Moonshadows the most because their king kills

Kings probably aren’t good cooks

Why no one spoke against Runaan when he said a teenager was coming on his mission

Of course they used the pool outside the tree house for the lotus ritual. That’s the royal pool outside the royal palace.

Of course Runaan had to ghost his friends. They were assassins, and he was their leader and king. He had to lead the ghosting.

when i started shipping it: okay so i went deep into my archives and i found my first mixen gifset, here, from october 26, 2016. it is then followed by this gifset from october 28, 2016, a complete stroke of genius i’d forgotten about. and HERE is the first post i made about them while watching legends, also from october 28th, 2016. i’m assuming that the clip of her trying to kill him was released as a preview which is why the gifset predates the text post. so then in november 2016 is good it’s not really ramped up yet and then we get the chicago way and that, in a lot of ways, changed my life? for the better? unclear. am i being sarcastic? also unclear. there’s just so much about it that did me in. first the “i’m clyde that’s bonnie” because s3 of dusk had JUST ended and that was a RAW fucking nerve. just the exact shit i was looking for. the scene where mick puts his finger to his lips while looking at amaya’s mouth and you just know he’s internally like i am... going to hell. i am GOING to hell. amaya kissing him on the CHEEK? [mick’s certainty of going to hell intensifies] and the real piece de resistance was len descending from the ceiling shrieking in gay rage like. that’s what really solidified mick’s relationship with amaya to me: he was willing to defend her to literally, literally his husband. he says amaya is his ONLY friend because leonard is GONE, implying that amaya is len’s EQUAL in mick’s eyes. mick is a complex character and he’s actually very sensitive but when we had him in season 1, he came as a packaged set with len. and he grew and formed new relationships and listen we all know i can and will ship mick with anyone dominic purcell this is a threat but amaya is, in canon, not just implied by dominic’s choices for the character, the time where mick is declaring his affection for someone out loud. and i also want to reflect on like. leonard, be he real or be he a figment of mick’s mind, despite being WILDLY jealous of amaya, had one goal in that episode: to keep mick alive. like mick was so reckless in season two and with amaya he seems to finally almost want to... pull back? he tells leonard “i’ll be dead like you” which says he isn’t objecting to the idea of being dead, but that amaya is giving him something that makes life exciting, and he’d rather have that than fall into his old self-preservation instincts. you can MARK that mick starts trying to die less after the chicago way until len comes back in the world war i episode.  like i guess i started shipping mixen when they became the epitome of “god said love your enemy so i obeyed her and i loved myself” are you HAPPY? is this what you WANTED?

what makes me happy about them: as much as i’ve focused on amaya’s positive impact on mick i want to emphasize that this is a two way street because mick is someone who taught amaya to embrace herself and what makes her happy. amaya has so much pressure riding on her shoulders and mick is never deterred by it. amaya has always been brilliant beautiful incredible etc but when we first meet her in s2 she is so tightly wound and she is so in the mold of what she thinks she needs to be and what she thinks the legacy of the anansi totem requires of her and when she’s around mick she realizes she can be... amaya. just amaya. like did she say to mick “what would a criminal do” because she was being horny on main? yes. but she also did it because she was genuinely open to learning how he saw the world. like it’s truly incredible that amaya meets mick and in the span of 30 minutes is like actually, mick is the most interesting and enticing person i have ever met and  [mick’s certainty of going to hell intensifies] but actually there are just little things they do even when they don’t like each other that show a certain level of respect- mick tells amaya he’s not an idiot and amaya tells him not to call her “girlie” so amaya actually spends the rest of their relationship uplifting mick’s ideas and his accomplishments and mick POINTEDLY never gives amaya a nickname. the nickname one is especially funny bc i geniunely think she just didn’t like “girlie” and may have been fine with a different nickname but like. the fact that mick remembers to NOT give her a nickname EVER when everyone else gets one? the way he paid attention to amaya and respected what she was saying? the way they could be open with each other? like okay they weren’t canon-canon but a part of me is glad bc. this ship was originally marc’s idea and what is legends s2 if not phil and marc fighting for control of the story like the one ring? if marc had been allowed to make them romantic i fear he would’ve done his normal bullshit that he does with his couples where basically mick never changes in a positive way and keeps chipping away at parts of amaya until she feels like she is at “his level” and then he essentially takes over the rest of the parts of her life he hadn’t already taken control of and just, disgusting. like let me be clear on mick rory’s worst day he is still a better person than oliver queen on his best day i don’t care if he’s roasting people alive he is STILL a better person. but with that relationship choice being taken out of marc’s hands, we instead get a relationship where amaya offers mick the starting blocks to build himself UP, and he takes them and is able to keep building himself even without fully relying on her. when he tells her in season 3 “we’ve all done things we’re not proud of” and she just brightens so immediately, and the same thing happens in the pirate episode - and he is able to do these things for her because he let her help him, but did not make her his only lifeline. the person mick is in s3 onward is a person he feels better about being because amaya has always seen good in him and like. not to be dramatic but i am literally, literally crumbling into ash as we speak

what makes me sad about them: FROM SEASON 4 ONWARD SHE ISN’T THERE ANYMORE AND MICK IS JUST LEFT WITH ALL THE FUCKING EMOTIONS SHE MADE HIM FEEL AND THE WAYS SHE HELPED HIM AND ALL HE CAN DO IS TRY TO KEEP HER ALIVE, IN HIS MIND AT LEAST, BY HELPING PEOPLE (CHARLIE AND MONA) THE WAY AMAYA HELPED HIM.

things done in fanfic that annoys me: i have no issue with mixen being in fic with OTHER ships but to my fucking detriment it always seems to be a secondary pairing in captain canary fics and like 1. hate crime 2. mick is a bisexual he can have a husband and a wife he can have them at the same time he can have them at separate times but if you’re writing capcan i’m assuming you have a heterosexual agenda and i want that kept away from ships i like at ALL times

things I look for in fanfic: a genuine understanding of mick’s character. he can be kind of tricky to strike a balance with but you can just tell when he’s being written too aggressively or when he’s being written just as too much of a bastard or a former criminal and like, i also look for amaya not being helpless and emotional bc quite frankly mick is way more expressive emotionally than amaya and it is so vital that this is understood. also if it’s sad i like to read it and then cry myself to sleep

Let's have some boxer au thoughts mick wouldve had to have been with len when he was going through the championships what was it like did len help mick open the gym or did mick do it after len passed is he still in the apartment they lived together in or did he move how does amaya find out he's a widower LAY IT ON ME

ok so i think len would fufill a kind of manager/accountant/trainer role, partly because he just is kind of a control freak, but also partly to cover up why they seem to spend all their time together

like mick’s “team” have all been thoroughly vetted by len so they all know but it’s still locked down TIGHT because a gay scandal would be bad enough for a macho guy like mick, but their criminal pasts coming to light would absolutely ruin them. 

after len dies, mick doesn’t so much fall apart as just stop. you would get the impression he was ready to just sit down on his chair and simply wait for death to take him so he could join len. it wasn’t until lisa bullied him into a sparring session and kicked his ass that he snapped out of it, at least a little. 

he sells the apartment, and lets lisa keep all of len’s stuff. he uses the money from the sale plus most of his savings to open the gym- mick lives above it in just the shittiest most depressing little bachelor pad you’ve ever seen. you would barely think a person lives there, much less that this person had ever been married. the only thing mick let himself keep was the letter they wrote to each other while one or the other was in juvie and had no other way of communicating. 

as for amaya finding out- i HAVE thought about this before. when amaya is researching this curmudgeonly old man who owns the gym, she’s shocked enough to learn that he was once a champion prizefighter, but. ok. amaya’s smart, right? and she’s not only smart, she’s tenacious. so she keeps noticing this guy in the background of a lot of pictures and clips from fights. 

in one (probably not The Championship but a fairly important fight) she notices mick and len getting REAL close and she’s like hmmmm. interesting. 

and as she gets to know mick she keeps noticing little slips, where like he’ll start to say “me and- I mean, I-” and she’s like HMMMM until it gets to the point where mick feels this quasi-flirtation with amaya has gone on LONG enough so he pulls out the ace in the hole of why amaya shouldn’t love him and he’s like well i have a dead- and she’s like husband you have a dead husband i figured this out like a week ago you were NOT subtle

the dragon prince and representation; a (fairly personal) ramble

there are a lot of things in the dragon prince that have stood out as very important to me and i’m going to talk some of them here

this post isn’t going to be groundbreaking or mind-blowing. i’m just going to be talking about things i’ve been wanting to talk about for a while. it’s going to be mildly disorganized probably (sorry lol) so, if you’re interested, feel free to read

[disclaimer] this post and what i say are from my perspective: you don’t have to agree with me on everything. in fact, if you don’t, i’d love to discuss about it. i don’t think i make very bold claims, but i am putting a disclaimer here just in case

diversity for the sake of diversity (averted) 

lets lay down a line: diversity in a show does not make the show good if there is only diversity for the sake of diversity. remember it. 

there is a deaf character, a non-binary character, 4 confirmed gay characters, people of color, someone who is blind, and more. what do i like about these characters in particular? they are actually useful and contribute to the show as a whole. 

it’s easy to throw in some POC or gay characters in a show just to have them, but real representation is present when the characters who are supposed to add diversity also add to the show as a whole. 

lets talk about some of these characters. the most obvious that probably comes to everyone’s mind first is amaya- callum and ezran’s aunt. i have not encountered a single person who dislikes amaya. she’s an absolute badass as she has the right to be. 

she is deaf, she communicates in asl, she has a translator because not everyone understands asl, she’s absolutely lovable, and she’s a good character. if amaya wasn’t as good as a character as she is, she would be less important and the diversity she offers to the show would be diluted (in my opinion). 

amaya helps move the plot forward. she’s relevant. she’s the reason why viren wasn’t crowned as king earlier. she destroys the breach which led to her being stuck on the xadia side which then leads to the push against the stigma between elves and humans that have lasted for years. and as i’ve said before she’s outright one of the best characters there’s no denying it. 

((also these two beautiful women are girlfriends (try to change my mind i dare you), and as a lesbian i could not be more pleased))

captain villads is blind. he only shows up for two episodes (technically three if you include callum’s dream), but he helps the team get across the ocean (big lake??) which was faster than traveling on foot and he offers some wisdom to rayla and kind of helps callum indirectly

kazi doesn’t have much screen time at all but they are confirmed nonbinary and they are the temporary translator for amaya 

(look at them i love them and i want to protect them)

at the end of the day, i just really like that this show represents people in some shape or form. the characters who are meant to provide diversity are likable and are enjoyable to watch. they contribute something, they aren’t there just to be there. 

however, i am not saying that the representation in this show is perfect (especially with lgbtq), but i believe it is a step towards great representation. if, in the future, runaan is reunited with ethari, and if they confirm a relationship with amaya and janai (and don’t kill one or both of them off), they will avert the “bury your gays” trope which is something that would be very refreshing to see. i’m wishing that this ends up being the case. 

there are other small things in the show such as interracial relationships, people of dark skin that actually have brown eyes, and more. if i took the time to talk about all of it i would be here forever. 

on personality and reflection

i want to talk about one scene that’s very significant to me: s2e9 “breathe”

sarai: “breathe. breathe. callum, you need to breathe. you just need to breathe, sweetie.” 

callum: “i feel so overwhelmed with everything. i...i have so many thoughts, things racing through my head.” 

the first time i saw this scene i thought ‘panic attack’. which 1) me too, callum and 2) it’s very well done. in the first image, callum is sinking. the water is his thoughts, his thoughts that are encasing him, drowning him (much like what it feels to have anxiety, over-excessive worry, an over-active mind/hyperactive thoughts).

this scene is very powerful; i’m a big fan of television accurately representing mental health so i might be a bit bias towards it. these 30 seconds alone bring me to tears because i feel like a big part of who i am is explained. i see myself in this scene. and they pulled it off in 2 sentences. as someone who has bad anxiety and depression this scene just speaks to me, it’s hard to explain. 

the advice that sarai gives is interesting and honestly sounds like cliche kids show advice but it’s something i always tend to keep in mind: “sometimes things can get so complicated that our minds can't quite sort them out alone. but when you slow down and let yourself breathe, your spirit and your body can catch up with your mind, and help out.”

there are also people like ezran: people who feel they don’t quite fit in with societal norms (which i 10/10 relate to honestly like):

ezran: “i’ve always been different. it’s hard for me to make friends with other kids. i just feel like i don’t fit in.”

and then best girl rayla swoops in and says “fitting in is boring” and i’m like ‘thank you’! besides, rayla doesn’t quite fit in, either. 

speaking of rayla, she is an interesting character.

i will seriously never get over rayla’s arc. rayla, after meeting callum, learns that its okay to be emotional. she doesn’t always have to be strong and invincible and perfect. i know a lot of people who are very much like rayla (emotionally) and i’ve seen people on this site that say they are emotionally like rayla as well

on top of being closed off, she grew up to view herself harshly. she blames herself for everything. she thinks she deserves to be ghosted, to be rejected. it brings up an issue that too many people deal with: self-deprecation. 

rayla: “they’re right to reject me. i’m not good enough and never will be.”

tldr; i appreciate that this show makes me (and others) feel represented in some way and brings issues that people deal with on a daily basis to light

Okay now i have to ask who is the person you kept reblogging who is always a signing and could be possibly gay i need to know explian it to me write a whole page i will read it all but i need to know now

this is general amaya from the netflix cartoon the dragon prince! 

some things drew me to her character immediately when she was introduced in season 1 

1) hot strong lady in armor. like honestly what more could you want 

2) she’s canonically deaf, and uses ASL (american sign language) to communicate! 

i was really excited about this because i know some ASL (i took three classes in college - two from a Deaf teacher) so i was able to keep up with some of her speech and i was really pumped to see representation like that in a kids show!! when there is another character around to translate, they voice what amaya is saying (this is generally done by commander gren - her personal interpreter and best friend). however, sometimes amaya’s speech is left to stand on its own. we don’t always get a translation of what she says, and that’s a decision i can respect, especially coming from children’s media. she’s also one of the highest ranking members of the army in the show, and they never treat her deafness like it’s an issue! her soldiers clearly respect her and she’s shown to have good relationships with a lot of the characters on the show. overall (as a disability advocate and not as a deaf person myself) i think her deafness is handled really respectfully and you can see the care they put into research and consulting about it

i also just LOVE her fighting style. she’s great with a sword, but amaya is very much a brawler type. where a sword won’t do, she’s just as likely to throw a punch, or, as we see a lot later on, just full on bash people with her huge shield. there’s a moment in her introductory episode where she full on just smashes a piece of furniture with her shield by ramming through it and i was like ... oh *heart eyes* 

she’s also very caring, devoted, and funny! she is very blunt (something that i think speaks to how much care they put into researching Deaf people and culture) and she absolutely loves her nephews (the two boys in the main trio of the show) and would do anything to protect them. she also has the Good Angsty Backstory of having lost her sister before the show starts, which is explored more later. she also, in her own very blunt way, likes to make jokes and just generally be a stubborn dick for the laughs, which is ... so endearing. she literally tells someone to shove their sword up their own ass and when they ask if she thinks she’s clever she’s like “lol yea” 

(spoilers for season 3!!) 

another thing that i did not think was going to happen, but that absolutely sent me over the moon with joy, is that 

*pats amaya* THIS BAD BOY CAN FIT SO MUCH GAY IN IT 

she actually gets an enemies to lovers arc in season 3!! WITH A WOMAN!!! 

i will be honest, amaya never gets a TON of screentime in the series (she’s definitely a secondary character), but in season 3 she got a whole arc with solo scenes!! like actual time dedicated to her!!! AND WHAT AN ARC IT WAS! for me, it was easily one of the most compelling arcs in the show (in a really good season, too!) and let me tell you, i fell for this ship HARD. they really don’t hold back on the emotional punches in this arc. OR THE GAY. THEY ALSO DON’T HOLD BACK ON THE GAY. (they have multiple other characters in queer relationships in the show too!!)

this is all to say that i LOVE amaya and that’s why i post so much about her lol. she’s strong, funny, caring, blunt, a fair leader, and an honorable warrior. and i for one CAN’T WAIT to see where they’re going to take her in future seasons!!

you know how bisexuals are attracted to the opposite sex as well as to the same sex, right? it's like being heterosexual and homosexual at the same time, right? so we can just divide sexualities into only hetero/homo and then bisexuals can relate to both of them, right? cause they're both of them at the same time!

or even better, when we want straight characters getting into same-sex relationships we just say they're bi, so now it's legal. thank god bisexuality exists

like, i can remember so few good bi characters just from the top of my head. i'd say it's clementine (the walking dead game), max caulfield (life is strange) and sean diaz (life is strange 2). yeah, playable characters in video games, where players are left with the choice of how to act on their bisexuality. [and zervan from dragon age, i think he's bi too, not playable, but from a video game as well]. and dex parios (stumptown), i haven't read the comics, but in the show she's great

i wanna say korra and asami (from the legend of korra), but i'm not sure since i've read once that they were supposed to be canon since the beginning but consider homophobia those days and all it didn't happen. how cool would it be if they were supposed to be two lesbians, but it was illegal so the creators were decided "okay, let's throw them in some het-relationships for now and then we'll just say they're bi". so i'll put them in the bi list but with a pencil for now

i would say rosa diaz (brooklyn nine-nine), and she really was my bi-icon for a bit. but then they decided it'd be fun to make her have two relationships at once without these people knowing about each other... which is fine in general, but nice acting on the stereotype about bisexuals (not to mention it felt totally out of her character, since she hadn't done that much dating earlier and now two at the same time?) (and i have the feeling that since she came out she's been into women exclusively, which is, again, fine on its own, but when there's this whole "making straight characters bi so they can be gay"-tendency in the media it's annoying)

and i was really happy watching runaways and seeing nico being bi and deanoru being canon (i've shipped them like from the scene in the bathroom). and then i've found out there are comics and i've read it, and in the comics nico isn't into karolina and straight. i'm still in love with deanoru in the show and happy nico is bi there, but do you see what i mean?

or, you know, casey and izzie from atypical. i'm a super big fun of them, yeah, but still, we had like a perfect het-couple (i mean, they were so cute, and great, and supportive and not toxic and all, piece of gold casey and evan) and then boom, casey is bi and in the same-sex relationship, with another bi girl with the similar situation (except for nate being a piece of shit, so not much complains on this side)

and i also want to say mazikeen from lucifer, but see, the similar case as all previous (still ship her with eve, obviously, doesn't mean it's not annoying)

i'll give all credits tho to jack harkness and river song (doctor who), they're amazing

oh, and almost forgot, laila (the bisexual). thank god this show existed, it's so great. like, she and dex parious are just... thank god

not to say we don't really have that many canonical bi-men (i know some exist, but i don't watch shows just because there are might be bisexuals in them, so i don't have anything to say about those men, but i make a guess it's not that good either)

so overall until i get some good canonical bisexuals i'll be making them myself and living in the world of my fantasies where you can be bisexual just because you're and not for some plot reason

and yes, i do this with canonically gay-males too. like william clayton (arrow) and tk strand (9-1-1: the lone star). with both of them there was a moment when i thought "what a nice bisexual we have here" and like 5-10 minutes later they said "i'm gay" and i thought "nice, don't care" cause you know for the whole 5-10 minutes they were bisexuals to me, i've attached, it's not like my thinking is going to change their canonical orientation, right? it's not like me strongly thinking about them as bi's going to do anything other than keep me sane [and i don't know if tj (andi mack) was confirmed as gay or will be at some point, i'm still going to see him as bi too]

So since Amaya’s apartment is based on my university one (where I was living when I first started writing), I’d probably be waking up to my alarm only mildly confused because didn’t I graduate already? Why am I back here? I even used to take 8am classes sometimes so it’d still be dark at 6am when I wake up so do I realize it’s actually 8pm?? No, no I do not.

Then I’d probably be too half asleep to question it and start getting ready for class. Until I either a) go to the fridge and find blood b) open the closet and see the dl school uniform...whichever you find funnier. At which point I’d be running to the bathroom mirror to find I have fangs and proceed to have an extreme freak out.

Because omg this is literally the most terrible world imaginable to get inexplicably transported into but wait Yui exists? I’m in the same world as my wife??? Not to mention since I’m Amaya that means it’s my version and not the terrible timeline. So??? Maybe???

At which point the only way to check for sure is to go to school so that happens and sure enough all the characters are there. This is fine. Also OMG YUI!!!!

Then after trying to think of what the hell I’m supposed to do, the event where Yui and Amaya first meet in chapter 1 is happening and I’m like fffffffffffffff. Because I know what Amaya does is what I want to do, but can real life me actually do it?? I have fangs so I guess I’m still a vampire, but do I really have Amaya’s combat ability too?? I don’t in real life!!

In the end, I manage to pull it off and chapter 1 goes off the same without a hitch. (with 500x more mental gay screaming as I try to say my lines without messing up because talking to your crush is Hard TM)

Cue going home and gay screaming. To which I decide the best thing to do is try and follow the plot because I know for sure that none of the terrible things happen if I do. Not to mention I get to actually for real date Yui! This will work and everything will be fine! Probably!

This goes fine through chapter 2 (and I am having the time of my life) and then chapter 3 where I’m supposed to explain things to Yui.

And I just.....can’t lie to her. So I end up just spilling the whole I’m from another world and this is a game/anime/whatever I watched this one time and really hated. Also that ‘Amaya’ is just the name of a self-insert character I made up (but I’ll just keep using the name because I actually like it).

I have no idea if Yui would believe me at first, but I’m thinking listing off a bunch of details from when she first arrived at the mansion that there’s no way I could know unless I was there would be pretty convincing.

At which point I would probably have to tell her both what happens in the regular game, and what happens in my rewritten version of it (that we are presumably in).

I’m going to have to explain that this happened because I fell in love with her, aren’t I? Oh my god this is going to be the most embarrassing thing ever.

So I guess we can just use my (albeit spotty) knowledge of dl to just avoid everything? I know all the Yui-relevant major plot points which I can tell her right away so....? Is there any reason for us to even go back??

Well Krul wouldn’t know I’d been isekai-ed so I would still have to follow her orders (hell no am I explaining this to her, I’d be dead....although if she finds out I’m hiding that I know where Ashera is I’d also be dead....yeah that’s a problem)

We’d also still have to take down Karlheinz and stop the Seraph apocalypse somehow (because no way me or Yui is letting that happen if we know it’s coming) so.....

anyways zarlie earth & sky au

the  basic set up - the earth clan (shifters, who can shift between human and animal forms) and the sky clan (fallen, winged creatures who might also lowkey be vampires? i’m still rereading the novel) have been at war for like. as far as anyone can remember. the conflict has basically been going so long that no one remembers why they’re fighting, but it involves the assassination of some royal (which side depends on who’s telling the story)

actual plot under the read more ayyy cuz it’s gonna get kinda long whoops

so enter charlie. part of the earth clan royal family, wolf shifter

them n their twin sister amaya are both technically in line to become the head of the earth clan but charlie basically says ‘fuck this shit i don’t wanna be queen’ and leaves with mona (also wolf shifter, different noble family)

the two of them are just trying to get to some human village when oh shit they’re in fallen territory

they run into nora (half fallen who can pretty much pass as human) and behrad (fallen prince who can absolutely not pass as human)

behrad, disney prince of the sky clan apparently is like ‘hey guys uh what’s up’

nora: what are you DOING they’re shifters

charlie here just like ‘we denounce the earth clan’ as mona in the bg is like ‘yea i guess i’m going along with this??’

also mona is charlie’s willing but unwilling partner in crime in this whole endeavor thinking this is a finding ourselves thing and then charlie says that and she’s like. oh okay so it’s not a finding ourselves thing

so behrad ends up taking them back to the castle and trying to sneak them in which. surprise surprise. fucking fails

sara, general and also just voice of common sense, is not fooled by his attempt to sneak them in. she doesn’t get paid enough for this

there’s a whole lot of chaos in which nora STRONGLY protests that she had nothing to do with this and literally was just trying to do her job (aka picking up sweets from a human village in town which is a very important job for a lady in waiting)

in all of this chaos zari, tired and recently appointed empress, shows up like HEY WHAT THE FUCK

charlie has five seconds of gay panic b4 announcing they’re no longer with the earth clan 

zari does not trust this bc there’s two shifters of nobility and literally ROYALTY saying that they’ve just. fucked off from the earth clan. 

by some combination of persuasion and puppy dog eyes behrad convinces her it’s a good idea and sara sees an oppurtunity so she’s like ‘yea let’s keep them’

see sara has a plan. a very good plan which involves a marriage alliance if she can read this right. 

chaos, as it always does, ensues. and that’s the fic.

hi!! 💛apologies for leaving this in my inbox for so long, this last week has been a ROLLERCOASTER but i promise you, i did see this and get very excited abt it and send it to rachel and we were both freaked out a bit abt getting prompts for the fic

so we have many, many ideas about pre-fic avalance in this au. like Many. many to the point that we don’t have the time to write an actual mini fic about it because the fic would be the furtherest thing from mini. also, bc it would be rlly weird to have to try and go back and write them before all of this, like we go back and read ‘don’t you like you’ and everything feels so strange bc we wrote it before we had this big detailed plan for everything that was gonna happen between them and it just feels crazy that they were in this place where they weren’t even friends let alone in love 

but what i am gonna do. is give you a fuckload of bullet headcanons instead. so i hope that suffices bc buckle up, there’s gonna be a few 🌈🌈

so ava and sara don’t go to the same elementary school. they’re both star city natives though so they kind of know of each other. sara did dance when she was little and was in layla’s dance class and ava was sometimes there when barbara came to pick her up etc etc. 

(ava’s school was a little nicer, was the fancier star city school that barbara teaches at. damien insisted nora went there bc of it’s good reputation and gary’s mom wanted the best possible start for her son, hence how the three of them ended up there and became friends) 

so by the time middle school comes around and they actually become a part of each other’s spheres, they know the other vaguely by name and the like 

in middle school, ava and sara meet and they don’t quite get along but they don’t rlly know each other so it’s not an issue - sara’s this reckless trouble maker that ava wants nothing to do with bc she wants to just do well and be liked and successful and normal while sara’s off getting into fights and sneaking out of school and never doing anything by the rules, so not interacting pretty much suits them both just fine

until in 8th grade, after spencer leaves to join the army and ava’s still trying to piece herself back together and he left around the time that she decides she was going to quit basketball after this season and she was scared she might be gay and starts vehemently ignoring any and all possibilities of that fact - that’s when sara lance comes out as bi

and sara doesn’t know why ava suddenly makes a point to argue with her more than usual, or call her out in her bullshit, or just be a general pain in the ass but she is, and what sara doesn’t realise is that ava’s angry that sara came out bc it put ava in a position where we had to actually confront herself abt her sexuality

sara has a quiet suspicion of why ava’s acting like this, and it would sort of make sense that ava would be gay (or bi, but sara thinks gay) but also she doesn’t wanna assume so she leaves it and just pushes ava’s buttons just as hard 

but it’s not all bad, bc the day nyssa and sara start dating, everyone at school is talking about it and ava knows her friends will be too and she’s terrified bc she doesn’t want to know if they think it’s weird, but kuasa just goes “whoa, no way” and lily whistles and says “damn, they’re probably the hottest couple at school” and gary doesn’t say anything but he’s got this look of curiosity and relief on his face and nora is looking at him carefully before she just glances over at sara and says “good for them” and ava doesn’t know if she wants to laugh or cry with relief

(and it’s still 2 and half years before she even tells nora - the first person she comes out to - but it’s a start at least) 

ava and sara get better for a bit in 8th grade, but then high school happens and suddenly they’re in the same homeroom and heaps of classes together and being partnered / grouped up for projects all the time and they both just get on each other’s nerves to no end

both of them are vying to be rip’s favourite in class and it makes ava furious and sara so smug because ava wanted to be the teachers pet bc she worked hard and did a load of extra curriculars and was always polite and on time and we’ll behaved, whereas rip just liked sara because she was entertaining and good at soccer and a little too cocky for her own good

and around this time, sara is slowly becoming friends with amaya and ray and jax and nate, is being less reckless and dangerous and unbearable as she was in middle school, starting to mellow a bit

but anyway; they’re at each other’s throats all of freshman year but their rivalry ends up being kind of fun bc arguing in class when it’s actually about school isn’t as frustrating for all the teachers and sara notices that ava actually makes her think, makes her feel smart, bc she can actually kind of keep up with the smartest girl in their entire grade, and ava meanwhile realises that sara is actually pretty smart, she’s actually kind of a genius and if she actually tried, she could probably give ava a run for her money and that both infuriates and pleasantly surprises ava 

but then early sophomore year, nyssa leaves. sara’s not at school for a few days and by the time she comes back, everyone Knows because it’s high school and nothing can stay secret for long, and everyone’s trying not to gossip bc sara’s slowly become quite popular around school but they can’t help it, they all wanna know what’s going on

and ava detests sara but she’s always admired her for coming out, for being so proud abt it and dating nyssa when there was like a grand total of 3 other lgbt people at school all of whom fit every single stereotype that ava wanted nothing to do with (and she’ll never admit it, but she had always felt kind of safe and comforted knowing nyssa and sara were dating bc it made her feel like she would be ok one day), so she can’t even imagine how sara feels especially if the rumours about why nyssa left are true 

sara’s heartbroken and angry and confused and she keeps pushing ava with jabs and mocking retorts and remarks that are lot harsher and more biting than usual but ava just smothers the urge to respond and rolls her eyes pointedly and ignores her bc she knows sara’s just lashing out

and at one point in gym, sara just drops her back and turns to face ava and demands “what the fuck is your problem sharpe?” and ava crosses her arms and goes “pretty sure you’re the once with the problem here, lance.” to that, sara glares and spits out “i’m not the one walking around with this fucking holier than thou attitude as if you’re better than me. can you at least argue back instead of rolling over like a doormat?” and ava literally wants to throw a dodgeball at her but she just holds her ground, doesn’t say anything, keeps sara’s gaze before biting her lip and looking away for the briefest of seconds. sara makes this smug huff of triumph, as though ava’s abt to fight back but ava just looks back at sara with an expression that’s too gentle, and says “i’m sorry about nyssa, sara.” and goes to join her dodgeball team

(amaya comes over to ask sara what it was about and sara can’t bring herself to answer, just shakes her head because she doesn’t quite know what just happened) 

things get better quickly, like. sara would never say it at the time but zari is this refreshing burst of fresh air who didn’t know nyssa the way all her other friends did and it’s so nice to have her around, even tho she’s still quite new. and then wally comes to star city and everything is fun and exciting w the legends and things aren’t perfect, definitely not bc oliver and laurel break up and sara and laurel have been fighting just usually like sisters do and dinahs been calling, on saras ass abt her slipping grades at school and sara just wants to piss them both off so she hooks up w oliver (and they’ve known each other for so long that they both feel guilty abt it and they try to make it a Thing bc they don’t want to admit that they both just used each other for different reasons)

it it’s sometime after that, after she and oliver collapsed under the very weak foundation their relationship was already built on, after laurel starts dating tommy, after amaya promises sara she’s not a bad person for what happened with oliver, it’s sometime then that ava makes that challenging retort abt sara even trying to get a better grade than her in french

and all sara can think of is laurel, the way laurel hadn’t been mad when she hooked up with oliver, the way laurel had just snuck into her room late at night and slipped under the covers and hugged sara close as sara broke down abt why their mom just didnt care abt all the good things sara was doing, the way laurel had softly murmured “you’re brilliant sara. you are, you’re so smart and so capable and if mom can’t see that, then she doesn’t deserve to.”

so sara does try. and she gets an a+. and the beam on laurel’s face when she sees it on sara’s desk, the pride on quentin’s when sara tells him - sara never looks back (and she also starts to look a bit more at ava, because maybe she’s not all horrible) 

gary comes out at the very end of sophomore year, sara goes over to give him a hug and she sees the expression on ava’s face - proud and protective and kind but also sort of hurt and definitely, definitely jealous, and sara suddenly remembers the way ava had acted towards her after sara had first come out and she remembers her vague, kind of unfounded assumption that maybe ava was gay, realises that ava’s never had a boyfriend, never said yes to any of the numerous attractive guys who have asked her out 

but also, sara’s known ava for like, 4 years by now and she knows what kind of family ava has and she feels this sudden ache in her chest bc ava must be in the most difficult position - sara doesn’t even know if ava is aware of it, so she doesn’t wanna say anything or offer support (also bc ava still grinds her gears to no end)

but she just keeps an eye out, checks ava’s facebook / instagram every once in a while to see if she’s posted anything abt it or added smth like a pride flag to her bio

and then on a sunday evening in october junior year, ava comes out on facebook. sara doesn’t see it first, in fact, she’s lying on the living room couch trying to not fall asleep reading her social studies text book when from the armchair, laurel lets out a quiet “huh” and both quentin and sara say “what?” at the same time and laurel goes “ava sharpe’s in your grade, right sara?” and sara nods and quentin’s like “is that the girl you did that chem assignment with earlier in the year?” and sara wrinkles her nose and goes “unfortunately. she’s a pain in my ass.” and laurel just hums and says “well, she just came out.”

sara almost falls off the couch, scrambling into a sitting position and snatching laurel’s phone and ignoring laurel’s protesting “hey!”

she reads the post through several times before she goes to comment and realises she’s on laurel’s phone, grabbing her own but then she hesitates, wanting to write something genuine but it feels too vulnerable so instead goes “ffs sharpe, on top of everything else, i now have to compete with you for hot girls too?”, but she opens messenger and goes “hey, just wanted to say congrats on coming out. i know it’s nowhere near easy to tell your family so like, hope that went okay. and i’m here if you wanna talk abt it at all.”

and the day after, as they’re clearing up microscopes and stuff in bio, ava quietly thanks her for her message and sara shrugs, goes “i get it.” and ava pauses before quietly admitting “you know i always admired you for being out. especially when we were so young back in middle school. i’d only just started thinking about it then and … i was a mess. seeing you being out and happy and just - the same person you’d always been … that helped more than you know.”

and it’s probably the most meaningful conversation they’ve ever had (or at least had in a Long time)

and 4 days later, ava shows up on sara’s doorstep after a fight with her mom at dinner and this entire fic began. 

also, for your own reading pleasure, some other random moments we thought of; 

sara only ever called ava ‘sharpe’ or ‘sharpie’ or any other variation of her name until they were both 15/16

ava used to roll her eyes every time sara got a a bad grade because she could be so much better if she tried, but she doesnt

sara nearly started a fight the first time she and ava had to work together on a project, and once they started it and it became clear they worked well together she was the Most Annoyed™️

back in middle school ava always scoffed and made some patronising comment every time she watched someone break up a fight sara had gotten into (except for the one time in the first few weeks of class when she had to stop sara throwing her second, or maybe third punch at a homophobic jerk in their class who’d cornered her on the way back from school - that time she shoved him away and watched him go before turning and cautiously asking if sara was okay, and sara glared at her and told her she’d had everything under control before storming off in the opposite direction)

Chapter 87: Boy Toy

Oh boy, this one was a trip for me.  I’ll start out by saying the main problems I have with this chapter are primarily with the start because that is so...ugh. We start off with Daisy caring about Paulo, and Abbey being a jealous little fuckboy. But that’s not what we’re here for is it? No.  We’re here because of this 

Oh boy.  Yeah that is definitely gay behavior that would totally bring someone’s sexuality into question.  I mean just look at this.  Who the fuck does that?  I mean someone’s up in your face, and acting all tough and stuff.  So in order to show how much it doesn’t care and just to piss them off you kiss them?  Jesus christ that would make anyone question their sexuality!

I mean god, just look at those fucking gays! My god.

Okay, but in all honesty this really is stupid, and when I heard and saw this shit it left such a sour taste in my mouth because it’s so ignorant to imply this is gay given the context of both of these characters and the situation.  Because this to me doesn’t make me believe that Paulo is starting to act gay or in a way that would make him question his sexuality.  It’s actually the opposite, because to me this is an act of defiance, it shows Paulo’s comfortable enough in his sexuality that he’d kiss a guy to piss him off and not even think twice about whether or not it’s gay.  

Then we move on to the immediate next page where there’s another thing to bring up because 

First of all, Mike where the fuck have you been?  Look at this scene composition: 

Who the fuck was talking to you Mike?! No seriously, who was talking to you?  This is the same scene, same place.  I know it’s the next page, but seriously was there a time skip in-between pages? Was there cut dialogue? Why is he saying that?  No one seemed to be talking to him before.  This is weird composition, and it’s messing with my head a little.  But that’s just probably a rewritten bit of dialogue from trying to write and rewrite this scene to make it more presentable and less clunky.

Unfortunately it didn’t work, because these bits of dialogue seem clunky as hell.  First of all what is Mike even talking about with “I’m not against guys, uh...” I guess he means “against guys kissing” so it’s clear he’s insinuating Paulo has The Gay(tm).  But this just seems like such an awkward thing to say, maybe “Hey, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with you...y’know...” or something like that.  Why is he being broad about it “I’m not against guys...” and not “I’m not against you...” what do other guys have to do with it?  It seems like even he doesn’t know what he’s trying to say.  And I don’t get the point of “It doesn’t seem like something you’d normally do”  like, I guess yeah but if Mike’s earnestly trying to be supportive here, wouldn’t he say something like “I mean if that’s what you wanna do, that’s what you wanna do...” or “Hey I’m not judging or anything, I mean you do you man.” Why would he say it like that?  As if this would be something out of.. character...

OH HA HA HA VERY FUCKING FUNNY YOU SON OF A BITCH 

Oh yeah, and Paulo’s reaction is just ridiculous.  Guy goes from zero to one hundred, and jumps to the conclusion that he’s being called gay even though Mike’s language has been pretty vague and not really even saying “gay”.  I guess maybe that’s what Taeshi was trying to accomplish here, but it just comes off as weird.  And according to the author’s notes Paulo’s reaction was actually supposed to be even MORE overblown than this.

But moving on from this awkward exchange, we go to the next page where Paulo is now in a tissy, and 

HOLY SHIT ffffff god I just got visual whiplash!  Is that even a thing?!  Like the whole big head style is whatever, but jesus christ Rachel, what are you? 3 feet tall?  Reminder: Rachel is at least a year older than Paulo, and is also a chubby puppy.  What the heck is this?  Remember kids: If you base character size based on how short they are comparatively to the people around them and not based on how tall they are from the ground, you can find yourself falling into the trapping of making your characters dwarves.  And if you have a style that gives them big anime eyes, and petite bodies, you might accidentally turn them into lolis.  And if you’re not okay with that, then you must quickly reevaluate your stylistic choices.

But anyway, I know this is long but don’t worry kids I’m not gonna roast every single page.  Just every page that I got problems with.  And there’s nothing as bad with the next few pages.  Matt invites Paulo to a party, and Paulo being an angsty confused little shit is rude to him at first.  But luckily the best character in this entire comic is here to set him straight 

Have I mentioned how much I love Rachel?  Cause I do.  A lot.  And this is a big part of my reason why.  She’s not one to put up with other people’s bullshit, even those that she loves. 

She’s not gonna let that shit stew for months or shit, nah she’s gonna call you out the moment she sees it, and she’s gonna set you straight.  She’s not gonna put up with anyone’s shit, and I fucking love her for that.  You fucking go girl!

anyway I guess this isn’t so bad, I mean my only real problem with this chapter is how Paulo’s  sexuality is being handled here.  I feel like it could definitely have been handled better and more naturally, especially if it wasn’t spurred on by him fucking with Abbey, maybe if it was another character like...

Oh yeah!  David!  Hey, that’s a good point! David would’ve been perfect for a chapter like this.  I mean, if I had to write Paulo questioning his sexuality his relationship with David would be an obvious go to.  I mean they’re practically inseparable, and it’d be easy to use that to be how Paulo would start to question his sexuality!  And while I hate to put myself in Taeshi’s shoes, because I would never want to be her; if I were writing a chapter where Paulo starts to realize he’s bi or starts to question his sexuality, I’d start with his relationship with David.  I mean it’s pretty much all but confirmed that David is gay if not bi himself, and from an outsider’s point of view one would easily presume that they were gay together.  So what if Paulo’s talking to Matt or something, like when he’s getting invited to Matt’s Aunt’s house.  And Matt says Paulo can bring David as well. And Paulo would laugh about it and be like “Hey, I don’t have to bring David everywhere it’s not like we’re a couple or anything. I got Rachel!”  And Matt would be like “ha, could’ve fooled me~”  or something like that.  Just off-handedly joking about it, but it plants the idea in Paulo’s head that maybe his relationship with David is kinda gay, and that’s what makes him start to overthink things.  And he could start acting out against David, like trying to push him away which causes him to get upset and figure out what’s wrong eventually getting him to open up about it.  Man David would be perfect for this chapter!  Maybe he can help show Paulo how being gay isn’t bad, or show him that his behavior is nothing to be worried or upset over!  Maybe by showing an actual platonic friendship with someone who is gay, Paulo can realize the nuance of being gay an-

Oh that’s all that we get out of David for this chapter huh?  Okay, that’s cool....

Well after this nothing really happens in this chapter.  Paulo sees Daisy again, and gets flustered/scared? And decides to go watch a movie because...he told Daisy he’d do that.  It’s pretty contrived. 

In fact the whole movie part of this chapter is contrived, and doesn’t serve any real purpose besides giving us 6 pages of Paulo just overthinking things, and being confused.  There’s not much to comment on, besides this scene composition 

First of all, indeed WHAT DO YOU MEAN NC-17?! Movies don’t get released into theaters with an NC-17 that shit’s straight to DVD.  That’s the unrated cut, with titties and shit.  What the heck kind of theater is showing that?  What cinema is this?

wait...DID YOU POP A BONER?  I-is that what’s going on here?  What’s going on here?  This feels really contrived, like it needed to be expanded upon more to make it organic. Anyway speaking of contrivances

Hello Mike, I see now why all this is happening.  You see, I have a theory about this chapter and its purpose with having Paulo be bi.  Actually, I have a few theories on its purpose, but one of them is that, this...all of this...is wind in the sails.  Because, it may be too early to say this but I’m like 99% that this whole Paulo questioning his sexuality thing, isn’t going to lead anywhere.  And before you fucking @ me about Jordan, let me ask you...did that really need to happen?  Did it really change his character?  Does this change Paulo’s views on his relationships, or potential relationships?  Do you think this is going to affect his personality or actions in a non-hamfisted way? Cause call me cynical but I don’t.  I don’t think it will.  What I think this is for, and especially why Mike is going to be the one explaining to Paulo why it’s okay to be gay is because...

Taeshi wants to blow wind in the sails of people who ship Paulo with Mike...

And somewhere, somehow, in some dark secluded corner of the earth...A man named Raxki Yamato just had the biggest, sloppiest, most intense orgasm of his entire life...only a select few of you will probably get that joke.

Anyway, Mike takes Paulo to his house to tutor and...

W-was Paulo checking out Haley?  That’s...admittedly weird. 

Anyway, the story rears it’s face in again and imma keep it real with you chiefs...

I actually like this page.  This part with Mike talking to Paulo about Sandy is really nicely done.  It brings up a dynamic I actually didn’t quite realize between Paulo and Mike in that they both have had relationships where their girlfriend is often too busy to make time for them.  And I really like this.  I like their dialogue, it feels very in character, especially Paulo’s snarky quip in the above picture.  I just love it. 

aaaaaaaaaaaand we’re back on that gay shit again! But don’t worry, because I actually like this part.  

This back and forth between Mike and Paulo, is exactly what I was talking about with the beginning of this chapter.  This whole exchange works, having them going back and forth between uncomfortable conversation to light hearted banter is precisely how this whole thing should’ve been handled.  And I really like how it’s handled here.  

But anyway we finally end the chapter with a follow up scene with Rachel and 

For real look at her.  If I showed you this picture out of context, what would you guess her age?  12? 10? 8? Like for real, this shit is ridiculous. 

But anyway, Paulo apologizes to Rachel for being stupid and taking it out on Matt, coming to the understanding that he doesn’t understand and that’s okay.  And Rachel reistablishes herself as the saving grace of this comic once again and all is well.  

Overall I give this chapter a 3/10.  After all the shit I’ve heard about this chapter, I kinda expected it to be completely bad, but Taeshi didn’t shit the bed completely and there was some actually good moments in this chapter.  But I still give it a 3 because 70% of this chapter was still bad.  The beginning of this was insultingly convoluted, the middle bit was dumb and kind of pointless, and if it weren’t for the end bit where the characters actually felt like their characters I’d rate this even worse.  But all in all, not all bad at least it’s not too insulting.  The worst part of it is just that it feels pointless if not redundant.  Because another theory I’ve heard spread about this chapter is that it was done to explain away Paulo’s homophobic behavior in past volumes, which to me is what really ruins this for me.  Because, it is such a trope to have the homophobic character be homophobic because he’s secretly gay/bi.  It’s fucking stupid, especially since you could’ve easily had a natural way of showing Paulo break away from his homophobic tendencies through Matt!  In fact, that’s what I presumed was happening.  

Paulo would just naturally not want to piss off Matt cause Matt’s a pretty cool guy, and friends with Rachel, so he’d try to not say homophobic shit, or maybe Matt would call him out on that stuff and Paulo would realize the pain his words cause and would learn the error of his ways, and naturally try to stop saying those things.  But alas, this is how it goes, and in the end it gets a 3/10 it’s not like December bad, but it sets a precedence for this character that I know isn’t going to matter.  And I guess TL;DR the best I could say about this chapter is:

@just-gimme-half-a-cup and I made this together and thought we might. Its also pretty long so I put it under the keep reading

Okay first things first the boys hijack the ship

Mick would defiantly drink some cold ones with the boys

Most likely Race

Specs and Ray would be making sure no one jumps out a window while also trying to keep a very drunk Dutchy from touching anything

Mick is gonna kill him later

Dutchy definitely stole all of the beer from Mick and Specs is trying to keep him from dying

                  - Which is another reason for Mick to kill him

Since he is drunk off his ass he is switching between English, German, and Dutch which is getting very annoying to everyone

Sarah and Sara are watching the chaos unfold and the boys being idiotic

Nate and Amaya would be pushes together by Romeo and Mush

Blink would be in the clothing Synthesizer room

He would come out of the room decked out in the most glittery suit the human eye has ever seen 

Eventually when he goes home he will make more money on the street when he is wearing it

Jack would be dragging Crutchie and David around the entire ship like a excited puppy

Martin is on Jack-sitting duty because everyone else is already watching one group of kids

Meanwhile Jax is trying to keep Les and Smalls out of the engine

Wally comes in and distracts them with his speed

Mush is stuck between awe and horror

Spot is either smashed or on his way to it because he is stuck on a ship with Jack Kelly and the Human Puppy Pack™

Sara finds Dutchy and Spot then throws them into the brig until they’re sober

Specs is just happy that Dutchy is somewhere safe until he account that Spot’s personality is amplified when he is drunk and that is a recipe for disaster

The two eventually get into a fist fight in the room because Dutchy snuck in the last beer and they both wanted it

                   - Specs has to pull them apart and leaves Spot in the room while we                       walks around the ship with Dutchy

When Jax and Martin fuse all the boys stare in shock and awe

Inevitably Jack passes out

                     - All the boys ignore Jack like nothing happened

Then Gideon comes up and they all scream and jump back

Dutchy screams the loudest and hides behind Specs

Dutchy thinks that he is seeing this cause once again he is drunk off his ass

                   - That’s when Specs goes into protective mode

Mick eventually finds out Dutchy stole all his beer

Dutchy goes home with a black eye and a bruised rib

The team soon kicks most of them out but keeps Crutchie, Blink, and Mush

They let the boys keep their memories cause they know no one is gonna believe them

Blink and Mush catch Sara seducing a girl on one of their missions

They would pull her aside really nervously

                  - Sara would have to explain it all to them

                                 - She is surprised how big their eyes get when she is done                                       explaining to them

Mush would look at her and say, “It’s… It’s okay?”

                  - Sara would just nod and then walk away leaving them in shock

Blink would then look at Mush and sat “No one’s gonna kill us…”

10 minutes later they are found my a drunk Mick making out their room

At this point Spec’s shirt is off and Blink’s is half way off

Once Mick leaves and shuts they door they just stare at each other frozen them burst into a fit of laughter

For one of their missions they have to stop in New York during a Pride Parade and Sara brings them along with her

Sara is wearing a bisexual flag as a cape the entire time

Blink and Mush don’t know what it is until they see two guys kissing and who girls kissing then someone with a flat chest wearing a dress

It hits them that this is a celebration of people like them

                 - They finally get to scream it on the top of their lungs

When they get back Sara tried to explain LGBTQ+ to them and it kinda goes over their heads

She tries explaining that there is more than just being straight or gay

It strikes a chord with Mush but Blink is floundering
