My thoughts so far on HS2 LI routes

Andy/Loy: uhhh yeah..... These 2 are by far the worst obviously. Absolutely terrible to kill them off and then let Vicky just forget about them? No. It's why it took me so long to try the other routes in HS2, I couldn't get over how Alisa killed off Andy in my first playthrough.

Dino: I think most of his route makes sense. His character is the most consistent with HS1, although he appears weaker at times. But this can be forgiven because of the whole situation. At the start he's obviously super conflicted, he tries to take care of Vicky and his relationship has a nice build-up. The family time, while awkward obviously with Fencio, makes sense. The suicide scene makes sense with how he reacts to Vicky stabbing herself. The wedding is obviously something he's been working towards in his head for ages and it fits their relationship.

Lucifer: honestly..... I hate to say this but HS2 made me hate Luci? To me he was second-best in HS1, so to now suddenly hate him is a big step. He lays it on too thick in the beginning with Plague, but he does come around eventually. The family time is weird but still not completely bizarre. The time in hell was super weird. This is where his character as I understood it was completely assassinated. The suicide scene is fine. The wedding came out of nowhere to be honest, and it felt super forced how lovey-dovey he was suddenly being.

Malbonte: I think the beginning was very rough. But at some point he suddenly goes from 0 to 60, and it's left me with whiplash. Vicky makes ZERO SENSE in his route. Like why has she never figured out that after wanting to kill one god, he'll obviously also want to kill the other?? After 10 years sleeping together and waking up together? Like wtffff. The family time can go die in a fire, it was that terrible and weird. I hate Rebecca on Malbonte's route even more than I already do! The suicide scene makes ZERO sense, again.... Why the fuck is Malbonte suddenly powerless? It was like the suicide scene had to happen so everyone was forced into it whether they fit or not. How did he think it was going to work out to have all of them die and.... Not defeat Shephamalum? I mean who would be left to do it? So bizarre. I don't even want to acknowledge the build-up to the wedding, like wtf?? Suddenly Malbonte is some lovey-dovey doting husband and partner? Whattttt? I just don't even think they're the same character anymore! The wedding however made up for it, that was pretty good.

Astaroth: was he one of the added LIs? Holy retcon.... Still it was an enjoyable route and with proper fleshed out scenes it could have been amazing. Wasted on this book tbh. The family time was pretty sweet with Christopher there but Rebecca is insufferable... The suicide scene was nice and angsty. The wedding was lovely, and I loved that the wedding speech was given by Christopher and we didn't have to listen to that witch again.

Hunger: actually such a wholesome route... If Malbonte hadn't improved so drastically, I would be tempted to choose him as my favourite. The family time was absolutely horrendous like wtf, but at least it made some sense... The suicide scene made some sense too, since Hunger was apparently not aware of what was going to happen. The wedding was weird AF but loved Hunger's reaction to everything.

War: sorry I despise his cardboard character and his sprite is super ugly to me so.... Won't be playing his route. 😬

Like, I don't like it, so don't think I'm trying to come at you or anything, I'm just curious about if you read it and didn't like it, or if you just didn't want to read it at all or what. Well, you asked.

There are literally multiple layers to why I despise the "post canon" content. I dislike the edgelord horsefuckery of the Epilogues. I dislike the widespread character assassination. I dislike the bottom of the bargain bin take that Dirk would become the villain and find it kind of hack-y. I dislike the treatment of Jade, Jane, Jake, Kanaya, and Rose. I dislike the way the team behind the Epilogues responded to criticism, especially after crafting a purposefully incendiary work. I dislike the entire "they aren't canon" "defense" for its misunderstanding of what canon actually means and find it a paltry wet paper shield.

(I frankly dislike them jacking Detective Pony's conceit without having read DP and learned anything from it.)

I also dislike the presumption on Hussie's part that they literally have any place in the fandom space. In my opinion, Hussie makes the incredibly common mistake of assuming fandom is an act of worship, that it is a space the creator has any right to engage in. I feel like the Epilogues are kind of founded on that principle and that is what led to this bullshit idea that fans needed to be taught a *lesson*. I actually find that much more insulting than their actual content.

I dislike how the Epilogues affected my friends. It was extremely painful.

I also dislike how HS2 continued to have its cake and eat it. Or, rather, our cake. I dislike the sketchiness around the Patreon and what it was actually funding, especially when compounded with the sketchiness around Hiveswap. I dislike what the community became, and I place some of that blame with the creative team for the absolute fucking bullshit they pulled in antagonizing the fandom and acting bafflingly unprofessional, and always curling up behind "gosh we're just a small team of QUEER CREATORS, what is wrong with you?"

And given everything that has come to light about the people around HS and Hussie themself and their complete failing to both insulate their team and arguably to shove them in front of a painted target, I feel personally justified in going yeah actually fuck the Epilogues and all the "post canon" (nope) content.

The absolute kindest thing I can say about it all is that the people who worked on the "post canon" shit deserve to never get involved with HS again and hopefully move on to better lives. I hope they find whatever they need to heal.

Also the Ultimate Self was always a stupid fucking eleventh hour saving throw trying to fix the fact Hussie fucked over Jade's character so severely.

WIP: Rebel

What are some cliches, tropes, and/or plots that commonly appear in stories written by your world’s inhabitants? What were they inspired by? Why are they popular?

Oh my god this one is so over specific.

Since Rebel takes place after a war that almost ended the human civilization books are a bit hard to come by. If somebody wrote something it would most likely be circulated only around their neighborhood and among friends, there wont be any mass production.

However people do post their works online and it is a pain to find them because there aren't websites like ao3.

Also people don't have much time to indulge themselves in creativity because they are too busy rebuilding.

Apart from that unnecessary info, most books are about the Red War. Some veterans tell their side of the story and some just study it and the world before it.

Honestly this is all I have for this particular ask.

What aesthetics are considered “advanced” or “futuristic” in your world - canvas wings, shiny chrome, smooth plastic? How has this changed over time?

Metal, glass, iridescence, neon lights and of course anything Red War themed.

The last one is a pretty sick and twisted idea started by the rich. They started to see the Red War as a step forward for technology and discoveries.

During the war things like laser tech weapons were built and used for the first time. Dark matter bombs which reduced islands to ashes were created. The HS2 genes was discovered.

So the rich saw the war as an inventor, a muse for science. It has been like 5 years since the war ended in the novel and they have turned the war into an aesthetic.

A bomb remains hung on the wall. Bent and bloodied laser tech weapons as centre pieces. War uniforms stitched together to form gowns.

It is only for the rich people thought, the ones who were affected by the war despise this aesthetic.

dumb very late night thought. its weird how post canon was defended on the idea of having interesting ideas, and yet nobody actually says what those ideas are.

i mean i can answer that. there was a point in which i did, in fact, (gasp noise) like postcanon. the interesting ideas were the narrative meaning to continue on and the idea of a dual paths set forth with two epilogues (and PERSONALLY what i interpreted as hints at a third True epilogue - pumpkin - a gourd that is sweet and has "meat" in it to be the closer to the finale of homestuck.)

i think the idea of ultimate selves was a cool one, and ult dirk wasn't.... bad per say at First. at first it was a "oh no dirk you fucked up big time. why would you do that" and then as hs2 happened it slowly became just. a bastardization of dirk that was too mean spirited to read. i also liked the idea of maybe a universe being eaten by the blackhole like in candy was fun :-O

(which isn't to say i didn't have parts i hated. i despised the jake jane roxy and jade writing. but it was purely text so it was just. easier to skip lol)

i dont particularly like the epilogues, but i found the epilogues by themselves a lot easier to contend with than when hs2 was being written. hs2 lost any goodwill i had toward the epilogues and made me go full scorched earth. i despise them now

terezi is such an interesting character like hussie is so fucking talented with characterization that i even love CALIBORN for his writing and it hurts to choose a fave troll bc aradias arc is so painful but satisfying and hopeful and im fuckin gay for vriska and karkat is just iconic and dont even get me started on how hard kanaya slayed. but if i had to pick a fave out of the trolls it would be terezi. the deep sadness and emptiness and longing and the homoerotic teenage friendship and the tragedy against the chaos and goofiness and shenanigans and fucking around/finding out. shes so interesting to me sometimes it seems like shes just doing random shit but she understands reality so deeply while also being a very unwell teenage girl. shes so strange but so comprehending of the mechanisms behind sburb and some of her actions seem to be very in line with how it to a point of a fault . she kills vriska because she thinks she has to and not because she wants to and in the end she tears it apart to bring her back in a new alpha timeline even if she never sees it fulfilled herself.

and YEAH SEE i need to make a lyricstuck to francis forever so bad like ofc theres that line lmaooo but also. its so very much how vriska filled that missing part of terezi. the ignoring the longing and pretending to move on and just suddenly hit with that grief and yearning like “i miss you more than anything” even after so many years her wallpaper is STILL her and vriska she will never stop missing her they are meant to be in a way deeper than quadrants or narrative destiny yet they are simultaneously inherently doomed to a tragic end.

gamzee and terezi are so fucked up and i find that interesting to read bc like. her falling back onto an awful relationship like that after killing vriska makes sense but ofc makes things even worse during that time. and i love the bit in the vriskagram montage when vriska helps her beat him up lmaoooo .

H's new art for "Pleasing" is very '70s and very much like it's either drawn by a child or was drawn for children. With HS1, they thought his career would take off into the stratosphere among the groovy adults and neckbeards, but when that did not happen at all, they redirected him back to his boyband roots for HS2 and got great results with female teenagers. Now it seems that he's resigned to market to the kiddies who are just learning how to use makeup. I think he (and Louis as well) will never be able to move beyond that core group. And I think they both hate this - Harry most of all. I think it embarrasses him that he hasn't been able to break the sophisticated adult market//

He very much has a big teenage fan base like ANY main stream artist but he also has a lot of older fans and casual listeners. Core fans are what keep artists going otherwise they flop. The only people to avoid this are singers who cater to older people with their songs like Adel or Beyoncé (as she aged by the way, wasn’t that way to begin with). One of the sole reasons Harry is doing acting and now festivals like Coachella is to get more out reach amongst the public. I also still see him debuting a new single before Coachella (so in March) or dropping it during the festival for the first time as it will be massive promo for the new album and not gonna lie, hate or despise him his team is smart for that. Also why bring Louis into this, that mans career is on very different levels of his career compared to Harry. Ask a random person who Harry styles is and they can either say who he is out right as a solo artist or at least know he was in One direction, Louis on the other hand is know by ex one direction fans and larries. Did you not see all the “Louis fans” sing sweet creature to Louis in his bus, that man’s entire career relies upon a conspiracy theory.

((I know this is primarily a Rose Lalonde RP blog, but I’d just like to appreciate Jade Harley as a character for a moment here. In the entirety of HS canon, Jade has stood out as a singularly tragic figure. Forced to keep quiet so as not to spoil the future events she witnesses in gnostic dreams, isolated on an island after her dog was psychically controlled to murder her guardian, and growing up alone for virtually her entire childhood, Jade has always valued her freedom above most things. Her character was arbitrarily chosen to be the pack mule upon which everything else could drive forward. Let’s lay out these examples:

1. Massive internalized self-loathing. Compartmentalized to the point where she literally beat her sprite self senseless for showing sadness. Jade HATES dealing with her own negative feelings -- she plasters over them with progress and new connections and hobbies that make her feel adequate. Being isolated will do that to you. It makes you feel like maybe you just aren’t good enough for others. That maybe you’re alone because you deserve it. Jade tacit refuses to believe this, and weaponizes her personal freedoms to overcome it. I imagine living alone on a tropical island will do that. Don’t like something? Simply change it. Who will tell you otherwise? So when Jade is confronted with an issue (even if that issue is her own loneliness), she analyzes the situation, gathers resources, and takes steps to solve it. But feelings don’t really have a solution, hence the violent outbursts when things don’t go her way. Negative feelings are stupid and pointless to Jade. They’re only useful for fueling progress, which is why we see her not taking any of John’s tantrums while they wait for the 3-year journey to end. And also why we see her here threatening to kill herself if she isn’t allowed her freedom in the epilogues.

2. Despite being arguably the most powerful player in either her own or the Beta troll sessions, she is still somehow uniquely unable to manipulate her element in such a way that solves her largest issue: loneliness. This is supposedly the curse of being a Space player, but HS2 Callie raises a good point: what about Kanaya? Kanaya has held meaningful, healthy relationships despite being a Space player. Her arc foils Jade’s in most ways. Kanaya embraces negative feelings as a natural conclusion to negative situations, resulting in a balanced emotional pallet. And while she might arguably lack the raw ferocity Jade packs, Kanaya is undoubtedly happier than Jade come endgame. But I suppose that may have more to do with the HS endgame writing being pretty lacklustre than it does to reflect the emotional framework that went into their characters. Regardless, it’s certain Jade was dealt a bad hand dressed up in godlike powers, which we the audience have collectively agreed makes Jade a well-written character enough to not spur massive overhauls of her arc before the end of the comic.

3. The biggest reason Jade fits so well into wlw pairings is because... well, her options for men in HS are incredibly bad. Dave is possibly one of the worst partners for Jade, strictly personality-wise. As mentioned before, Jade HATES dwelling on emotions, whereas Dave needs at minimum a few days just to sit on something he’s feeling in order to adequately process it. Where Jade immediately overcomes problems, Dave likes to analyze and figure out creative possibilities. If Jade needs a resource, she simply takes or creates what she needs. She has the sheer determination and personal strength to do so. Dave, on the other hand, does not -- so he creates inventive ways to never run out of those resources. But that’s pointless to Jade. Why bother having limitless grist by manipulating the stock market or creating negative grist to sell? That’s wasted time and wasted effort. Karkat is just as bad for similar reasons. Where Dave and Karkat love to grapple with their internal monologues (as a coping mechanism, truthfully), Jade despises it. I won’t go into why the other troll men are bad for her (except, perhaps, everyone’s favourite Sollux), but you get my point. And don’t misunderstand me: there are women Jade would not work with, absolutely. But all of the Homestuck men are arguably complete nonsense as longterm partners for Jade.

4. Buuuuuuuuut this is also what makes Jade a spectacular wlw fits-all. Where the HS men are indecisive and asthenic, the women are aggressive and impulsive. This fits well with Jade, who is used to consolidating raw and chaotic events into useful resources. Where the HS men react to tragedy with tears and consolation, HS women react to tragedy with immense violence and sheer vindication. Where the HS men tacitly accept small suggestions that they may be tragic figures within their own stories, HS women belligerently reject such notions. Jade, Rose, Terezi, Vriska -- these women typify the savoir faire that answers the Advance or Abscond question with the edge of a blade. But Jade most of all exemplifies this idea that if there’s an obstacle that gets in the way of a thing you want, you tear a hole through so large that space itself warps around you. And this is pretty sexy of her, not to be Horny On Main. Many HS men have problems that can’t be solved with gratuitous violence... but many HS women do.

In conclusion: I forgot where I was going with this. Jade Harley is an awesome character. Her rage resonates with me at a frequency only dogs can hear. And it brings me catharsis to know there’s spotlit HS media that finally lets Jade just Wreck House and shout back at the yoke the original HS canon placed on her. Good for her, good for her.))

Hmm. Homestuck or a fandom of your choice bc I know there’s one your hoping for

The first character I first fell in love with:  Truthfully probably June or Jade. I would die for Jade Harley. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Karkat or Equius. The shouty asshole suddenly and violently gaining a character arc that was sympathetic. Also I love the sweaty strong lad.

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I mean comedy option Vriska because of who I’m dating, but honestly, Calliope. Everyone adores them but, like, I’ve always found them grating at best. The character I love that everyone else hates: Equius I will die on this sweaty hill. The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Does Tavros count? I liked him early on til he went creepy Nice Guy to Jade. Otherwise probably Dirk, completely independent of HS2. The character I would totally smooch: Vriska for uh...previously mentioned reasons. Also Roxy. The character I’d want to be like: Honestly probably Jade. She’s smart as heck. The character I’d slap: Eridan. A pairing that I love: Roxygen, Spider8reath (LOOK I’M A SIMPLE GIRL) A pairing that I despise: RoxyCal. VrisRezi. The second one the comic goes to great lengths to prove it’s toxic and unhealthy for both of them without some serious personal growth. The first one I felt like it worked better platonically because it felt like good Aro representation that I guess fanartists didn’t like because aro people don’t get to have representation.

Oh, these are fun. I’m totally down for being one of many in your survey so, here goes:

A. When you first heard the full album back in May, what were your favorite and least favorite tracks? 

My favs before I saw them performed were From the Dining Table and Sweet Creature (I think, but that time is a BLUR). Least fav has always been Carolina.

B. Now what are they? 

Kiwi and From the Dining Table are my favs. Kiwi became a fav after seeing Harry perform it at the Troubadour.

C. What are your favorite and least favorite that Harry has performed in concert? 

Love love love Kiwi. I also love the way Ever Since New York opens the show. ESNY is much more upbeat live and on the album it feels much more melancholy. Both are good, just depends on my mood. I despise Carolina live. Never loved it, don’t like it live.

D. What do you think the second album will have in common with the first? 

I have no idea. It depends on when we get it. If it’s basically the other tracks that they recorded at the same time, I’d imagine it’ll sound similar. My DREAM is that he records with CHASM for the second one. But we’ll see.

E. And what do you think the biggest sonic difference will be? 

This is not my area of expertise. So I actually have no idea.

I really despise when people use "It's being bad on purpose" to justify the writing problems in HS2. Because even if it's intentional, it doesn't excuse all of our time being wasted on soap opera level drama while waiting for the story to suddenly become good.

Media Harries are just a particular brand of nasty imo, insecure and desperately thirsty for cred but actually very shallow. The sort who can't actually understand most of the cool stuff they claim to love. Ordinary people can enjoy shallowness because we all need a bit of glittery nothingness sometimes but Media Harries are the opposite : shallow vapidness drawn to something that really very ordinary, like wasps to an empty soda can.

Like any ppl who can't escape their attraction to unsatisfying things they're buzzy but unpredictable and always looking for something to sting for no reason. But I can't know for sure if Harry is like them or just goes along with them because cutting them off would take real spine and fame and LA has done to Harry what that spaceship did to the humans in Wall-E. Whatever he does or says they will interpret their own way tho and add sting to OT3, who they despise.

He's far too spineless, and craves fame and success too badly, to do whats necessary to cut those wasps off (that would require BallZ, and wouldnt please any part of a 1D fandom so obsessed with numbers and 'winning'), so he'll just ride that shallow wave as long as he can. I think no matter what he mumbles in some interview his press and pr will stay lookin like its written by some nouveau riche Jane Austen character, thats desperately trying to be something its not. Its gonna stay gross.

My personal line in the sand would be decent lyrics and music, that he quits acting the twat and trying to be some out- of-the box, Mattel made, Ken The Rawkstar! and hires some decent co writers and goes back to making fun 1D style pop rock (with lyrics which show some respect for the millions of diverse females who got him where he is), plus as many faintly schmaltzy, cheesy ott love songs as his little heart desires. And less of the nasty passive aggressive and self pitying undertone was peppered with. (He should find a new therapist).

He does not have the talent (or maybe the personal depth) to channel complex human emotions in a skilful way. Definitely not musically. But he's a great entertainer. If he puts out some family friendly warmth and goodness, does some homework so he can say a few intelligent, sensitive things in interviews (NOT to be done among the LA 'intelligentsia' lol) he might be able to drown out the buzzing of all the wasps around him.

I'm expecting his roll out to annoy me. I won't be less annoyed if some OT3 mentions have all the harries using it as proof of his sainthood. Zs beautiful album has been legit sabotaged so I'm goona be salty about the red carpet that will inevitably be rolled out for HS2, but I don't think all of that is at Hs *request* y'know? Like are there things he could do to even the playing field? Sure, but they take guts Idt he has.

Ultimately what matters to me is what these men put out to their millions of scarily impressionable followers. If he can put some of that compassion and kindness he preaches into actual bops, if he can (co)write with that humility he always lays claim to in interviews, then thats okay with me.

As regards 1D, my requirements for Harry are the same as for all of them : either keep 100% schtum if you've nothing nice to say (no @less sniping) OR spill that tea and lets have the drama and ppl can openly fight their own corners and take the consequences.

He does need to do way more of his own direct communication though. Nothing empowers the wasps like him leaving the soda can empty. Just a few call outs against nastiness (not just weak ass 'unfollows') would go a long way. He needs to do enough direct positive communication through music and sm that the wasps get drowned. He needs double his 1D communication, not half.

But thats what Harry needs for Harry. Ppl thinking him mentioning 1D would level rhe playing field are mistaken. If he goes on a chatshow tour where he lets them ask what they like about the band and give full detailed answers - he will solidify his lead. The others' replies will get cast as mere footnotes in the tabs, as either the rightful praise or bitter sniping of the also rans. That narrative was set up and ready to go with the hiatus. H not speaking on 1D at all didnt hurt OT3 imo.
