Custom Toonami Block Week 157 Rundown
Spy X Family: Itâs the season finale and you know what that means: actual plot progression! Itâs time for Donovan to actually visit Eden and Loid gives a rundown of why he canât just crash into the place despite being Lupin the Third on steroids. Now see this whole time I thought the plan was to assassinate Donovan idk where I got that idea but thatâs what I assumed. But apparently itâs actually to just get in his good graces and ply him for info which seems completely unrealistic given the guy doesnât step outside except for alumni shit, like this is why real operations usually gun for people a couple ranks down on the chain of command for info gathering given Donovan has Lupin Mask detection devices surrounding him at all times. First Anya tries to follow Damian and confront Donovan herself but she eventually has to dip out but not before reassuring Damian to have courage and face her father because she fucks up all the time and her father still loves her so even if he fucks up occasionally he should have faith in his dad too. This gives Damian the motivation to not back down on meeting his dad and keeps Loidâs operation going. He pretends to run into Damian accidentally while looking for Anyaâs keychain she got last episode and luckily Donovan actually shows up to meet his son. So Loid gets to introduce himself and apologize for Anya decking Damian the first day of school (ironic that Anyaâs very first fuckup is the only thing that gives him literally anything to talk about here) Loid vents about his frustrations raising Anya and Donovanâs like âyeah bro kids suckâ and Loid plays it off like âyeah they do but I try to talk to them on their level and meet in the middleâ and boosts up Damian as a good kid to try and draw them closer to each other while making sure Donovan remembers his name and face. Itâs not much but itâs a foot in the door and outlines Loid and Donovanâs different perspectives on the prospects for the future, Donovan thinks only of how communication fails because you canât really trust anyone and Loid is constantly seeking to understand everyone as much as possible (usually for spy shit but still).
Inuyasha: Naraku and Sesshomaru keep fighting and Naraku repeats his tactic of âIf I let Sesshomaru beat me up enough then all my blood and guts will just eat him and shitâ from the last time they fought because Sesshomaru is OP and even the main villain canât beat him really. Problem being Narakuâs blood is made of Super Venom and will literally melt anyone that gets within ten feet of it which is bad news because thereâs three very squishy humans and one moderately squishy half demon whoâre about to get soaked in the stuff. Hosenki tells Inuyasha he needs to cut him down to get his power and break Narakuâs barrier and thereâs a cool parallel of Sesshomaru and Inuyasha both saying ânothing else mattersâ but Sesshomaruâs saying it about destroying Naraku despite the fact it may cause Kagome, Miroku and Sango to die but Inuyashaâs saying it about saving them even if it means losing his chance to gain Hosenkiâs power. Hosenkiâs moved by Inuyashaâs compassion and gives him a pass on the âcutting through unbreakable adamantâ thing and busts himself open so Inuyashaâs Wind Scar to wipe away Narakuâs miasma also carries the adamant shards and just fucking IMPALES Naraku and itâs SO SATISFYING because heâs been so fucking smug since Mt. Hakurei but like between Inuyasha making 60% of his body adamant crystals by impaling him and Sesshomaruâs followup turning his body into whatâs essentially a fine paste, itâs really nice to see. Kagome even gets to use Kikyoâs arrow to shoot the jewel shard and purify it so he canât take it with him while he runs away. Even Narkau says if he had fasttraveled like a second later heâd be really dead. Honestly as a kid I remember thinking it wouldâve been fine if it just ended there like even by Narakuâs standards that escape was weirdly marginal, like everyone important was there and got a good blow on him but we still have Hakudoshi and shit to deal with so of course weâre not done yet. Though I gotta say the Adamant Barrage is one of my favorite Inuyasha moves like itâs just so visually cool looking and it just completely no-sells the âno but stronger barrier thoâ arms race thatâs been going on for the past like fifty episodes. Though I also gotta say this is where they start leaning into the Tessaiga gaining new powers from defeating demons as something the Tessaiga inherently does and Iâve always assumed this was a retcon made at this point because the Wind Scar and Backlash Wave seemed inherent to the sword itself and the barrier crystal seemed to be a special case tied to the properties of the bat demonâs blood jewel itself but apparently this is the point where theyâre just like ânah it gets new abilities whenever it kills a strong guy but only when itâs plot relevant because we donât want it shooting lightning after he kills the Thunder Brothers or some shitâ and I think itâs like an editorial mandate that Shonen series have mechanics to keep throwing new powers into the mix because thatâs what happened with MHA and itâs just kinda strange despite me liking the Adamant Barrage and Meidou Zangetsuha (not the biggest fan of the Dragon Scale though).
Yu Yu Hakusho: This is a weird episode, just kinda gonna say that up front. So Yusukeâs been training with the demon monks for a year but Raizenâs on his deathbed and snaps and decides to try to eat Yusuke because apparently heâs demon enough for Spirit World to be mad about him being in the human world but human enough for Raizen to eat I guess. Still they fight a bit and heâs even with Yusuke despite literally being ten minutes from dying. Yusuke snaps him out of it and he gives his backstory about why he doesnât eat humans and itâs legit the most half-assed âa girl healed my wounds and didnât immediately want to kill me so I fucked herâ story like Togashiâs usually a lot better about these, itâs so paint by numbers and itâs legit a one night stand where she takes off her shirt and is like âbtw Iâm poison so donât eat meâ and Raizenâs so struck by her boldness and titties he literally says he âhad no choiceâ but to fuck her, like donât get me wrong Iâm a sucker for some impressive titties and a confident girl too but he gives Yusuke WAY too much detail about how he fucked his great great great great great great grandma and then decided to never eat humans again because they sex was just THAT good, like there was no grand romantic development to their relationship or playing at having a deep connection like he fucked her and then fucked off and then she died giving birth to his demon baby like holy shit thatâs such a paper thin excuse plot like I could get better motivations out of a filler story. Anyway now that Raizenâs unloaded his story about unloading into Yusukeâs grandma he tells Yusuke Yomiâs a prick and Mukuroâs probably the lesser of two evils and fucking dies on the spot. Ever the rebel, Yusuke decides that the first thing he wants to do is go visit the person his deadbeat dad told him was impossible to reason with and, meanwhile Kurama and Hiei are counseling their new masters about what a wild card Yusuke is and not to underestimate his dumbassery because it fucks everyone up in the end.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Itâs time for a good old-fashioned flashback arc! The first part of the episode is a big semi-unrelated setpiece about young Utahime and Mei Mei going through their own PT/Eternity Devil shenanigans and itâs pretty fun and does that weird anime rotoscoping thing which Iâm not sure if I love or hate but itâs all a setup for Gojo and Getoâs introductions which is pretty nice since last week we got a good bit of foreshadowing for their backstories with the movie. The interesting thing here is when theyâre talking to each other they both seem to have the exact opposite opinion of their current day selves with Geto being the one vouching for protecting the weak and Gojo going for strength above all else so from the outset we essentially put in high relief that this is going to be a story about Getoâs fall and Gojoâs rise to meet where their standards come to by the time of the movie/series. The main plot goes down and basically as I understand it the dude thatâs the leyline for all the barriers and shit has to get fed a specific human every few years so his immortality still registers him as human and doesnât go âwait this fuckerâs 2000 years old, better make him a buddhaâ because enlightened people are notoriously shit at actually having empathy for the existing world or doing anything to actively help people since the material world is fleeting and all that. So itâs kind of ironic that a bit of ritualistic sacrifice keeps him away from enlightenment but they liken it more to something like Orochimaru taking on a new host (or Gojoâs Digimon example but I donât find that quite as useful). But yeah the catch is the sacrifice is a young girl who Iâm sure wonât inevitably change the outlooks of two young men at the crossroads of life, though sheâs also being hunted by a group of evil sorcerers and another group that canât actually do shit but has lots of money to pay people to do shit and also one of the guys theyâre paying is Megumiâs dad who everyoneâs simping for I guess? I really like how effortlessly quirky and lighthearted a lot of the writing for this part is, like itâs goofy and unique but not in a sweaty way like a lot of the bigger stuff tries to be nowadays, really sells the previous generation being just as big of dorks as the current one.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: So this is a weird series and Iâm not entirely sure how Iâm gonna go about breaking this one down considering itâs a lot more âvibe-centricâ for lack of a better word. Thereâs a lot of jokes that are probably better if youâre reading it as a comic or willing to stop and go back to read subtitles but I donât have the energy for all that so Iâm bound to miss a few. But yeah I think the premise for this one is fairly well-known already, itâs a quirky lovestory that gets all the people too isolated to be hipsters but too extroverted to be Goths going with its charming characters and unique/blatant references. Itâs kind of funny that the romance between Scott and Ramona is the core because as far as I see it so far itâs a relationship where both people are the Manic Pixie Dream Girls which is kind of a fun dynamic, though it does fall into the normal romantic comedy traps of Scott trying to orchestrate a meeting and obsessing over a girl but it skirts away from being too stalkerish in the end. They kinda have like half a date and immediately almost fuck which makes me feel like a bitter loveless old person that hates romance because that seems unrealistic to me that theyâre just randomly gonna hop in bed that quick, Iâm from the âdonât kiss until the third dateâ era of romantic comedies so like not saying itâs a terrible way to do things and it is nice they showcase both of them backing down and putting up and taking down barriers of consent but like I said it makes me feel old and bitter because this seems to be escalating WAY too fast. Thatâs kinda how I feel about a lot of this like I feel like Iâm about a decade too old to romanticize being unemployed and mooching off a friend and being in a go-nowhere copyright-infringement named band but I am enjoying the vibe in general. But yeah now the actual plot comes in with the Gendo Ikari ripoff (because apparently every anime ever has to have one of those now) and the League of Evil Exes (Iâm just kind of amused that they self-identify as evil, like idk why thatâs so funny to me theyâre so serious about it) and I do like how it seems like because Ramona herself is relatively closed-off we learn more about her through the path of each person sheâs dated which is kind of a neat way to symbolize the path of truly connecting with someone which does kind of ease some of my worries about how quick they jumped into things. The first guy is just a random fleeting fling from middle school and I imagine thereâll be more progression and complicated relationships as we go (though damn Ramonaâs 23 and sheâs already dated seven people worth mentioning? Like thatâs not too outlandish but that still seems above the norm at least) Anyway the first boss apparently has magic and turned Scott into tokens so⊠guess weâre going full magic next time⊠Also between this and Yuji in JJK and a few others thereâs an odd number of anime that just have it like âoh yeah the protagonist was just kinda already good at fighting to begin withâ to get around them having to learn the basics of fighting.
Ranking of Kings: Iâm kinda checking out on these honestly at this point, like I know I complained last time about this whole season seemingly being filler but yeah itâs just not as interesting retreading the small time lapses in the original story like making a Naruto filler arc but on purpose for some reason. This time all this is supposed to happen during the time Bojjiâs heading back to his kingdom even though that was supposed to be a rush trip and they still barely made it back in time to save his mom, glad to know these detours almost cost Hilling her life because Bojji was fucking around with random bandits and spirit dogs. The first short is about Bojji and the Underworld Knights making camp in the canyon and ending up helping out a random family with a bandit problem while hiding from a giant t-rex like monster that just turns out to be the Underworld Captain sleepwalking and moaning. The second short is about them running into those spirit dog things they saw with the Big Lipped Alligator Moment guy from the start of Bojjiâs journey (also Kage talks about it like he was there, like technically he was in Bojjiâs bag but I canât be bothered to check if he wouldâve been in a position to see any of that shit but Iâll take his word for it) and yeah itâs the standard Avatar plot of âthe spirits are angry but you gotta talk to them instead of fightingâ itâs fine itâs just really short and doesnât go very far like a lot of these have been doing.
Vinland Saga: Season 2 starts off with the story of Einar, a young Englishman in the middle of a tragic backstory when JUST after he finishes rebuilding his village after it got pillaged, it gets pillaged AGAIN and his mom and sister die and then heâs shipped off as a slave. Itâs kinda funny because when he says heâs from England Iâm just guessing it was Vikings that did the pillaging given how the cultural climate of England was at the end of Season 1 it was basically free game for them, so itâs not Thorfinnâs old crew cause theyâre all dead but itâs something very like his old crew that creates Einarâs origin story. Einar tries to take to heart his momâs message about living well being the best revenge and always rebuilding after devastation but turns out living as a slave fucking sucks, who knew. Thankfully heâs at least sold off to people that while not exactly nice they are pragmatic and want the slaves treated well enough that theyâll look good enough to sell well to some rich assholes that probably wonât beat them too much which is probably better than being stuck in a foreign country with no food or money, like idk I assume Einar could at least figure out something to hunt but itâd probably be really rough and his escape attempt ends hilariously quickly when he runs out of food and tries to go pilfer some. Heâs eventually broken in to trying to be a good slave just to stay alive and honor his momâs ideology of trying to rebuild. He runs into Leif whoâs looking for Thorfinn because apparently Thorfinn somehow got mixed into the slave trade after season 1 because I guess heâs just trying to go down the checklist of everything Thors was trying to save him from becoming. But yeah the sheer love that Leif is showing to try and save Thorfinn even now really gets to Einar and he puts in the last bit of effort to be sold off to a seemingly good-natured man with a HUGE farm. Like you know, owning people is never great but this guy at least seems like heâs not gonna beat the shit out of his guys for no reason and Einar is slowly starting to convince himself that he can live without his freedom and accept his fate. Thatâs when we find out Thorfinn WAS sold as a slave to THIS SAME GUY, and heâs fucking JACKED now, like itâs a big reveal of how old Thorfinnâs gotten given Leif didnât look that much older and was still looking for Thorfinn as âshort and blondeâ but the Netflix pic for Vinland Saga is legit older Thorfinn so that was spoiled a bit.

Stranger things & Door symbolism (narrative analysis)
We see doors have a lot of symbolism and different meanings but to a certain extent itâs about respecting/not respecting boundaries &privacy, and being open or closed to others emotionally.
In s2 Max picks the door of the av club (trying to easedrop on the boys)-and it goes wrong (and causes dart to escape). Similarly, in s1 Karen picks Nancyâs bedroom door lock (and Nancy does not open up to her emotionally despite Karen saying âyou can talk to meâ). BUT in s3, we see Karen contemplating picking Nancyâs door again-and right after she decides not to try and pick the lock and respect Nancyâs boundaries (Nancy finally opens up the door and herself emotionally to Karen). We even see Jonathan in s1 pick Lonnieâs car door (which we know is not a healthy dynamic).
Nancy also tries telling Jonathan not to break into Lonnieâs car-similar to Jonathan trying to convince Nancy (in s3e3) not to break into mrs. Drsicolâs via opening the front door.
We also see because jonathan doesnât respect Lonnie (canât blame him). So,Jonathan walks in uninvited through Lonnieâs front door -to investigate-similar to what Nancy did to mrs. Driscoll in s3 . These prior examples are also similar to El breaking into Heatherâs house by using her telekenesis to unlock the front door (for her and Maxâs investigation) . Or doing the same thing to Becky in s2 (for her solo investigation ). Why we have a shot of just El, Nancy, and Jonathan peaking through the doorway.
El unlocking latches also mirrors how the demogorgan ALSO used telekenesis to unlock the front door latch of Willâs house .
In fact flayed Bruce attacking j*ncy in s3, mirrors Will first being attacked by the demogorgan in s1. Jonathan & Will both lock the doors- than Nancy & Will try calling for help- but the supernatural creature unlocks their latches and both Nancy & Will drop the phones because of this.
we also see through every season-given Elâs upbringing- El doesnât respect boundaries with doors -since she never received it with Brenner (who would come into room whenever he pleased/closed the door and threw her in solitary) .in s2-3 she uses her powers to pick/UNLOCK doors -to open them . And in s1 she used her powers to LOCK a door- and forcibly CLOSE the door to trap the boys in the room  (akin to the closed door in solitary).
This scene directly contrasts an earlier scene of Mike respecting El wanting the door open -by having El later NOT respect the boysâ desire for the door to be open . Mike asks if she wants the door closed and she says ânoâ so he lets it be open. When Lucas tries to open the closed door- she closes it and says ânoâ. (she had other in universe reasons for doing this- but this scene is later also paralleled to Hopper in s3 locking Mike in the car against his will, when he tried leaving. Similar to el closing the door on Lucas in s1 when he tried leaving.
In s1 (with Elâs ptsd and) with El not understand privacy- she wants her door open . But in s2 when wanting privacy she closes her bedroom door (as Hopper demands she open it, and she cries). in s3 she also closes her door (now wanting privacy) when kissing Mike/ being on the phone with Mike/ hanging with Max ( and Hopper again yells at her to open the closed door). Max even criticizes Hopper by saying  âdo you knock? JEEZEâAnd in s3 flayed Billy yells at El and co to âOPEN the g*ddamn doorâ. In s2/3 we also see Hopper yell for el/Murray to âOPEN the damn doorâ  (despite murray having a âkeep door CLOSEDâsign).
*flayed-Billy also smashes the glass on the door to try and unlock the door-similar to flayed Bruce at the hospital.
And In s2 we see Neil tell Billy to  âopen the doorâ . In fact the first word uttered after the door is opened, is by Billy -who says âwhatâs wrong?â. The same thing occurs when Hopper in s3 says to âopen the doorâ -the door opens and Mike says âwhatâs wrong?â (as another parallel) .
The Byers also in opposition to this, respect doors/boundaries of Willâs:Â
Will (similar to Murayâs sign) has a âno trespassingâ sign on his front door in s1 (also akin to the one at Hawkinsâs lab). And when Will rides by the Hawkins sign- what happens, heâs chased by the demogorgan. But Jonathan and joyce respect Willâs sign/boundaries- Jonathan knocking on Willâs DOOR in s2 before entering & Joyce ringing castle byerâs DOORbell (and getting verbal permission) before entering in s1.
However, Jonathan doesnât respect Lonnie :
so walks in uninvited through the door ,break into Lonnieâs car, and opens Lonnieâs trunk (door) without permission. later jonathan gets angry the cops/ Hopper searched his trunk (without permission) . Sort of matching his later hypocrisy of being ok to break into Lonnieâs car but not mrs. driscollâs house.
of course - this is because Lonnie doesnât respect jonathanâs boundaries. again- the demogorgan is called âthe deep fatherâ in d&d. And a light-bulb is shown in Lonnieâs shed when it attacks Will. So we see Lonnie behind an open door (of Jonathanâs room) and a single lightbulb. A single red light bulb is shown -when Jonathan doesnât respect others boundaries and develops photos. Later when the demogorgan is in Jonathanâs house- Jonathan hides in Willâs room and the âkeep trespassingâ sign FALLS OFF the door - when the demogorgan comes near. And again we had a shot of Lonnie next to the âno trespassing signâ too.
So how does this relate to romance? Or the supernatural?
For romance
Well what does Nancy do in s3 (unlike Karen in s3)? Well she not once, not twice but 3 times- opens jonathanâs door (despite the sign saying âplease,do not enterâ (when red light is on). which is similar to Willâs âno trespassing â /murrayâs âkeep door closedâ sign). This is despite jonathan telling her not to-over and over. We see the first time she enters and he tells her this- she says âsorryâ, but after she rolls her eyes (and than later she does it 2 more times-showing sheâs not actually sorry). It shows a lack of respect for her partner and his photography (light destroys his photos). This is similar to Jonathan busting into Lonnieâs. Or El -not respecting doors in every season (and spying on her bf who in s3 was not happy about this).
Which is one of the reasons j*ncy & m*leven were (verbally) paralleled specifically in s3 .Both pairings have no trust in boundaries/privacy- Jonathan taking those pics in s1 vi*lated Nancyâs boundaries/privacy, Nancy in s3 ruins jonathanâs photos while disrespecting his boundaries,El spies on Mike in s2-3 and says she makes her own rules-and doesnât care if it made Mike uncomfortable.
We even have in s3e3-nancy & El break into peopleâs houses via the front door (to show how similar they are).Â
This also correlates to my other post- where I talked about the theme of spying on love interests being done by many characters too (Jonathan to Nancy in s1,s2 lucas spying on Max, max on lucas in s3, steve and rando-girl who rejected him in s3. El in s2-3 to Mike. And on the nonromantic end -the mf /the us gov spying on our heroes, El in s1 being trained to be a spy, karen spying on Mike in s3 via phones, similar to how the government agents in s1 monitored phone calls, etc. The snowball even had l*max/ m*leven (who that season spied on eachother ) dance to a song about a st*lking ex- while the spying mf watched them as well).
Also as another romantic contrast to doors in s3:
Mike throws El in his closet (gay ref) and closes the door (to his real emotions ). As Karen says to Mike âtalk to meâ about Will (similar to Karen saying to Nancy âtalk to meâ in s1 ) .And she says to Mike âI never want you to HIDE anything from me.â (which he literally is doing).Â
Similar to Nancy ins1 whoâs door was closed (to symbolize being emotionally closed off from her mom -it signifies he wouldnât open up to Karen in s1 about Will (cause heâs too occupied CLOSING his CLOSET door for EL- and pretending to be straight).Â
Than in s3e1 during m*leven kiss it pans to a the rainbow drawing (which says Mike) & a drawing of Will the wise as the lyrics âjust a little more time will open closing doorsâplays. After this, at Willâs house in s3e1 ( while Will claims he wonât fall in love) you hear the lyrics in the back ironically play âLove that was new to you-you open up the door.â Like - go back to episode 1 -itâs true. After Joyce says âok;- the song gets much louder just for the lyric âyou open up the doorâ.XD Iâm not making this sh*t up (they purposely didnât subtitle the segment panned to Will but itâs clear as day) ! The other song Mike kisses El to in ep 1 is âcanât fight this feelingâ (which is about a guy afraid to tell his friend of many years that he loves them-but who is afraid to do so and ruin their platonic relationship- which doesnât fit m*leven who kissed in less than a week . the song lyric also has the phrase âif i have to ...come crashing through your door, baby I canât fight this feeling anymore.â XD Than after âtimeâ (3 months/last ep of s3) El kisses Mike- infront of WILLâS OPEN CLOSET door, in Willâs room, while El holds Willâs bear that comes between them. El (similar to Karenâs closet scene) even tries to get Mike to talk about his âfeelingsâ which he avoids doing with El (/ Karen). As mike doesnât open up to El emotionally he also doesnât reciprocate the kiss- or say i love you back-and the same song (âthe first i love youâ) which played when, in s3 ,Robin rejected steve cause sheâs gay- plays. And both stobin/mileven s3 confessions also heavily parallel . I mean coming out as gay used to be called âcoming out of the closetâ...
The supernatural: Doors & upsidedown-Â â A doorway between worldsâ
Murray ,in s3, (translating for Alexi) calls the gate a âdoorway between worldsâ. While Mr clarke also calls it a âdoorwayâ and discusses Hugh evereteâs âmany worldsâ theory. So later when NOT respecting Mr.clarkeâs boundaries and interrupting his date - Dustin says about the supernatural/deprivation tank âwhy are you keeping this curiosity door LOCKED?â We also see on the st soundtrack -the song playing while alexi is explaining the upsidedown - is called âthe door is openingâ. And @ghostgirlinsatinâ mentioned this detail after I orginally posted this-when alexi runs away âneutron dance â plays and the lyric is âIâll just stay behind this LOCKED door.â
We see mr clarke stab a pencil into a plate and Alexi stab a straw into a box to illustrate this doorway. Along with Lonnie hammering a nail into a wall in an attempt to close a open door (and saying someone should be held accountable for what happened to Will). it transitions from Lonnie repeatedly hitting the nail with a hammer to Mike stabbing a plate with a pencil -like mr clarke -and explaining how Will got to the upsidedown. Because ironically- Lonnie is the cause of what happened to Will (and should be held accountable). gif visuals-here.
If youâve read my âcrashcourse of evidence for Will creating the upsidedown/mfâ or the longer version called the âdid theoryâ you generally know where this is going.
Like Dustin said- the upsidedown is a âalternate dimensionâ a âdark echo of our world.â
Which I believe Will created based on suppressed memories. A few things appear to be triggers-bathtubs, clowns, and slamming doors. When Will first sees the upsidedown in s2- the arcade door slams open (making Will jump). And later when first seeing the mf (his front door opens by itself-similar to the demogorgan opening the door in s1). In s3 when Billy yells to open the door- Will senses the mf (and touches the back of the neck-which a season prior was associated with memories).
I think the door imagery (to some extent) represents Lonnie coming home and slamming/unlocking the front door. in s1 when Hopper knocks at Joyceâs door aggressively (she says âgo away lonnieâ). Demogorgan in d&d also means âdeep fatherâ & Nancy says the demogorgan is like a âlionâ (lonnieâs name means lion). And just all the other connections to the demogorgan and Lonnie I talked about in my âcrashcourse postâ (baseball, hunting, lights, etc). And the fact Billy and el (who are heavily paralleled to Will) also have Dads yelling to âopen the doorâ is suspicious too. I mean Neil calls his son William a âf*gâ, and makes him play baseball -just like Lonnie did to Will. And Neil also yells for William (Billy) to open his door, before hurting him. So I could see Lonnie doing that to Will in the past ...
We even have El see a red door- while in the void
Heck- in s2 , Dr owens said Willâs anniversary affect would make him remember tra*matic memories and OPEN his neurological flood GATES(Â and these openings to the upsidedown are also called GATES and DOORS)!

So, mc adopting at least one of each of the Child mobs, how would that go?
IT MAY BE 4AM BUT THAT'S NEVER STOPPED ME BEFORE LETS DO SOME MF HCS.
Sadly I was only able to work on two of the mob kiddos as I didn't want this to get too long but I still hope its okay~!
Also just a heads up a lot of this is a pure waffle of information based on my own interpretations of the mobs so here's hoping I did a good job with them lmao.
---------
It wouldnât have been the first time youâd ended up inadvertently adopting someone, nor will it be the last knowing your luck. Itâs not like you intentionally do anything to draw people to you, it just so happened that the things that you did and situations you got wrapped up in led to you getting to know all kinds of people in the process. And those people saw you in all kinds of ways - most saw you as friends, others saw someone else in you, more than a few made no attempts to hide their blatant flirting - and, rarely, a few would even see you as a role model,a mentor or parental figure to look up to.
You honestly have no idea why, after all, itâs not as though you go out of your way to make particularly responsible decisions (if anything, you get yourself in enough trouble that youâd imagine youâre anything but a role model) but a lot of the younger transients and students seem to flock towards your presence, looking for comfort, advice, or just someone who respects them. At first it was just the younger members of your guild that you technically took under your wing - as the Guildmaster you assumed it was only natural to look out for them, and youâd long gotten used to protecting Agyo and Kijimuna, wanting to make sure that the only thing they had to worry about was having the chance to be kids rather than getting dragged into the Guildâs app-based affairs. Itâs not like responsible parental figures are easy to come by in this world of app-battles and fighting, so thatâs perhaps why when you start taking a more protective, nurturing role with the younger ones that more of them begin popping up.
Surprisingly, the ghosts are some of the first mob children that you noticed began flocking towards you. Roaming spirits are unusual but certainly not rare, and it honestly breaks your heart a little to see so many young ghosts lingering around in the unexplored corners of the city, searching for one thing or another. Things feel...off, for a while before you can pin down the issue - you start feeling as though youâre being watched when youâre in the guildhouse by someone other than your teammates, and when your attempts to shake off the uneasy feeling doesnât work, you decide to bring it up to your fellow Guild members in case itâs someone trying to spy. You want to make sure itâs not someone who can bring danger to the guild, but you donât have much of a chance to set up a search of the building when the D-evils come tottering into your field of view, screeching up a storm and motioning towards an otherwise unassuming corner of the window.
Turns out you werenât the only one noticing the other presence, as Shiroâs D-evils seem to have picked up on it to - and when your attention snaps over to the window to see what theyâre pointing to you barely catch a glimpse of the flickering figure of a ghost child as they disappear from view. From that point on you start spotting the child more often - heâs shy or wary, always lingering someone just out of the corner of your eye but never getting any closer almost like heâs afraid. He seems to have taken an interest in you though, especially whenever the younger guild members come around to spend time at the guild, and it isnât long before you notice that heâs intently watching the way you watch over and care for the kids of the guild - he looks almost sad in these instances, but never dares to get any closer and disappears as soon as you turn to look at him. Over time it becomes almost normal to have a resident ghost at the guild (though Agyo still shudders at the mention of ghosts despite having seen the kid plenty of times since arriving). He seems to be more at ease after a while of watching you, and things finally come to a head one day when youâre playing videogames with Hanuman and the other kids, noticing that the little ghost has wandered far closer than heâd ever done in the past, watching the small screen setup on the floor with an avid interest that seems far happier than the forlorn looks heâd had before. Taking a chance you tilt your head to look over at the ghost child, motioning him to come over and join; he disappears for a moment, startled, but right as you start to worry you may have scared the kid off he rematerializes, inching hesitantly closer and closer till heâs hovering beside the rest of your group, eyes fixed to the characters on screen with a child-like wonder.
You arenât quite sure how this ended up with you adopting the ghost child yourself. Itâs just one day you were talking about how you were pretty much adopted by the teachers at school and how youâd like to pay it forward some day, and the next you were talking about âsonâ this, and âmight as well take the kid under your wingâ that - you were practically acting like an impromptu parent for like a fifth of the people you knew anyway, so what was actually adopting a child? Toji had just about choked to death when youâd made the unfortunate decision to announce that fact mid-drink, and Shiro spent more than his fair share of time probing you with the legal questions surrounding a student adopting a child, ghost transient or not. Ryota seems incredibly excited by the idea however, gushing about being an uncle and wondering if your new son can eat and if so what his favorite food is - plenty of questions for a later time.
Ghost is certainly the most clingy of the children you end up adopting, and itâs clear from the get go in the sense that the poor little one is essentially glued to your side from the moment you take the venture to actually adopting him. With few things remaining in the physical world to cling onto, the familial bond is something that the little one cherishes and he absolutely refuses to budge on letting it, and by proxy, you, go. For a while he actually fears youâre going to leave him and take back what you said about protecting him and being a good parent. He of course had parents once, and their lack of presence at his side now paints a tragic picture no matter what way you look at it, so the kids got more than a few attachment issues you need to work through. Ghost doesnât really talk too much, instead relying on gestures and interacting with things around him to talk to you and others - it takes a little bit to get used to if youâre unfamiliar with some of the gestures but itâs easy to pick up as time goes on.
Definitely one of the more well behaved children of the bunch, given that once youâve convinced him that youâre not abandoning him heâs dead set on making you proud. He gets antsy when youâre not around, spending most of his time at the guild when you're at classes, but he takes to following Agyo around instead during these times. Agyoâs more than a little startled at first, and is a bit awkward about the whole situation as he processes it, but before long Agyoâs not only getting along with your ghostly son, but heâs also teaching him the âlion dog dutiesâ that heâs been teaching you - youâll never quite forget walking in to Agyo giving the poor kid a detailed rundown on the upkeep of the guildhouse and all that it pertains.
It was supposed to only be the one child, you swear, but damn if you havenât got a bleeding heart and a knack for attracting trouble. Word travels around fast about your adoption, and as more people learn about your impromptu push to parenthood people start coming to you for help - namely, kids with nowhere else to go. Maybe itâs your bleeding heart or savior complex, but before long one kid becomes two, and then two becomes three, and soon enough youâve got four kids on your hands.
Thereâs no denying that things get a little bit rocky when you start taking in other children. Despite the other kids in the guild, Ghost has technically been the only child up to this point, and with your attention shifting from both him and the other children at once itâs a sudden change - one that you thankfully discussed with him first to make sure he was okay. Even with the okay though, Ghost is more than a little anxious when you bring the second child, a nether sprite, âhomeâ, especially because of how loud she is by comparison. Nether sprite is an absolute ball of energy and mischievous to boot, so she more than makes for an interesting parallel to the otherwise quiet Ghost youâve been taking care of the past few months.
Sheâs a handful, especially during the first few weeks that sheâs settling in - it takes her a while to really start seeing the place as home, and even longer for her to even consider you a parental figure (sheâs seen you as more of a babysitter till you proved you were willing to stick around and put the effort in to be a good parent). Once she does settle in however she takes to the place quickly, and, to your surprise, your two kids become thick as thieves. The Nether sprite catches on quickly to how Ghost communicates, and given his penchant to linger around those heâs close to and follow them around sheâs more than happy to drag him all over the shop from one activity to another - itâs a surprising development but one you actively encourage. Unfortunately as I mentioned sheâs still mischievous, though tones it down from anything too troublesome if itâll cause you too much grief.
However that hasnât stopped the amount of times youâve gotten calls from someone about the kind of trouble you two little ones have wound up getting themselves into - looks like they both picked up your knack for getting intentionally and unintentionally dragged into the weirdest events (sure, itâs fun when you do it, but having your kids doing it only serves to give you grey hairs from the stress.) And things only get crazier once the other kids end up coming along, for both better and worse - but thatâs a story for another time.

Some and Others, 1/?
Bucky wasnât looking for a relationship, he was looking for a good nightâs sleep, but when he found you he got more than he bargained for.
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count: 5,758
Content: swearing, soft smut (18+ only), Bucky being clueless, IW and EG just didnât happen? idk, everyoneâs alive and living in the compound #classic, also me fitting in a bunch of information that probably wasnât necessary for the first chapter but whatâs a story without a sturdy foundation?
After a mission, Bucky is some kind of way. Steve is too careful with him, but he doesnât exactly blame the captain. Plus as an uncommissioned officer, 70 years without promotion, who is he to disagree. Maybe he isnât ready for a life of avenging. Certainly isnât ready for the questions that will follow another sleepless night, so Bucky didnât stay in. He went out.
His memory wasnât what it used to be, but Bucky recognized your street the second heâd stepped onto it. Heâd parked his bike in the grassy alley on his right, gotten coffee at the Caribbean supermarket across the street when he finally left that afternoon. Technology wasnât his strong suit, despite his depth of interest in it. There was etiquette and a way to do things that were as nuanced as they were mysterious. Bucky often wondered if people just lived by their own set of rules, leaving everyone else in the dark and only interacting with the persistent few who engaged correctly. He didnât have the patience for that sort of thing. Shuri reminded him of that more than he cared for, but in terms of debts owed, he could smile through her jokes for a lifetime after the second chance sheâd given him.
Bucky Barnes was a ladies man⊠at some point in his life, but more accurately, his life had been colored with women stronger than him since the day he was born. His mother was the first to hold him, followed shortly after by the older sister who tried to sell him to the milkman. Luckily Mr. Spenser wasn't in the market for a throw away babe and Bucky got to grow up in a house dominated by women. His sister, his mother, his grandmother with the accent that was just gibberish outside of their living room, the two more sisters that were welcomed in after him, though heâd never dream of bartering them away for bubble gum. They were all loud, but kind and could always bring a smile to his face. Even still. Rebecca, the most distant in age, but the closest in spirit, was still living. His baby sister was all grown up to the point of growing back down, shrinking in on herself the way old women do. Bucky made regular trips to the Alzheimerâs care center, sitting with her and loving her as only a brother could. Though her recollection of recent history was gone, Rebecca Barnes could still pinpoint the exact moment that all her girlfriends fell in love with her brother, which made Bucky shake his head and laugh. Her CNAs were worried for her mind when Rebecca introduced them to her big brother, looking closer to a man in his 30s than a man from the 30s, but he assured them that she was correct. He hadnât changed a bit, she told him with two wrinkled hands on his cheeks. In appearance, not as much as he should have, but in all the other ways people usually mean, Bucky couldnât feel more disconnected from the man he was when Rebecca was all bright eyes and secret kisses under the corner store awning. Bucky had no problem leveling those boys with a stare back then, but now most of them wouldnât think twice before using their canes as a switch across his shins just for cocking an eyebrow in their direction. Talking to his mother wasnât possible anymore and his sister wasnât in a state to give out girl advice. Shuri was on another continent. Natasha⊠was Natasha and he would never ask for her help with something like this. Wanda was usually awake late at night when he was, but she was still so young.
Bucky looked up from the street, noting your second floor windows were dimly lit. Golden squares stood out against the bricks, blackened by the late hour, and through the gauzy curtains he spotted movement. Without his mother to advise against it or Shuri to give him something better to do, Bucky reached for his phone and scrolled through the recent calls. Youâd called yourself before he left, but thinking that he wouldnât see you again, Bucky hadnât actually saved the number. Something of a bad habit, he noted, scrolling through lines and lines of unrecognized and unsaved phone numbers, hoping heâd just know it when he saw it. He didnât.
Until one appeared on its own, presenting him a choice. Answer or reject. A simple question with unknown consequences. Rejecting the call seemed safer, so Bucky pressed the red circle and resumed his search.
âWerenât you a spy or something?â Your voice drew Buckyâs eyes up from his phone screen to the now open window above his head. You were leaning out a bit, the posture helping your voice to carry over the surprisingly still busy street.
âSomethinâ,â he grinned, pocketing the useless device. Both hands secured in his jacket, Bucky tipped back on his heels to get a better look at you. âGonna invite me up?â
You shrugged and planted your palms against the window sill to lift yourself up. Even from that angle, Bucky was transfixed by your cleavage. Subtle under the tank top you wore, but he remembered it fondly. As if you could hear his thoughts, your arms snapped closed over your chest, bringing the colorful wings of a kimono with them, shielding yourself with floral patterns and defensive body language that made him take a step backwards. âYou didnât callâŠâ you said and though accurate, your accusation made Bucky regret what he was about to do. After waking from the best nightâs sleep of his life, he said heâd call you. No amount of self love could bring that much refreshment into his life and the feeling of waking up after a deep and dreamless sleep was enticing enough. The sex was good for a one off sort of thing, Bucky would even say great, but the sleep that came after⊠he hadnât been able to replicate it yet. The lure of a good night's sleep and the softness of your body against all of his rough edges were too strong to stop him now. He was committed to this indiscretion, but before he could defend himself, youâd moved on, already smiling again. âAnd you just ignored my call.â
Buckyâs eyebrows furrowed and lifted in quick succession before he pulled the phone from his pocket again. Saved. And for good measure, he pulled it up to his ear again. You frowned, turning away from the window, presumably to look for your phone. The glass slid shut behind you and Bucky bounced on the balls of his feet while he waited for the metallic purr in his ear to be replaced by something even better.
âWhat are you doing?â You said over the line.
âHey, itâs Bucky-â he heard you stifle your own laughter with a choked âoh my godâ in the background. âRemember me?â You hummed and Bucky waited with his eyes on your window. When you didnât return, he kept talking. âI know itâs late, but I was just in the neighborhood-â another quiet giggle made him smile as he spoke. âYou up?â
âIs this Bucky Barnesâ first booty call?â You asked.
âI guess it isâŠâ he said, half his mouth curving up even though you couldnât see it. âHowâm I doinâ so far?â There was a pause and Bucky started moving toward your door on instinct. It was illogical to think something had happened in those few seconds, but after the day heâd had Bucky didnât feel confident ruling it out. âMaking me nervous out here, doll.â
âYouâre doing just fine,â you assured him and Bucky leaned back against the door in relief. âI was about to go to bed⊠but since you came all this way-â the end of your sentence was cut off by the loud buzzing in his ear as the lock on the door disengaged from above. Bucky stepped into the first hall, street lamp making the small row of Golden mailbox fronts glitter, and leisurely took the first few steps up. âBetter hurry,â you sighed and Bucky stopped, foot hovering over the next step. âDoorâs unlocked and Iâm already naked.â Bucky was in your apartment and snapping all three locks into their closed position before youâd had the chance to hang up from his impromptu phone call.
You fucked him slowly that night. The rush he felt taking your stairs two at a time dissipated once he was in your bedroom. It wasnât as frantic or fumbling as it had been the first time and Bucky was happy for the change. When heâd followed you home from the bar, it seemed that both of you had an understanding. One night only, so make it count. It was hard and fast, but so so good. Even the next morningâs repeat and the finale in your shower before he finally pulled away sated had been more like back to back sprints than whatever this gentle marathon was. As if you could feel the stress that Bucky needed to let go of, you moved carefully around him. Totally bare in the bluish glow of the bathroom plug in that lit the scene before him, you took your time undressing Bucky and placing his hands back at his sides whenever he tried to help move things along. When you dropped to your knees, leaving him open and vulnerable standing naked in the middle of your bedroom, he made a sort of wounded noise that made him want to bolt, but didnât seem to bother you. If anything it spurred you on, drawing more whispers from his rosebud lips until he couldnât take it anymore. For the first time in his life, Bucky begged for more attention. Not the teasing he did on street corners- come on, baby, youâre breaking my heart here- when a dame tried extra hard to resist his charm. This was real pleading as if he thought heâd die frozen in place without your heat to revive him.
Heâd made the right choice. Bucky decided while lying across your bed, one hand twisted up in your pillow case while the other was splayed across your bare thigh, that heâd done the right thing coming to you for this. He could have gone back to that bar or a different one and gone home with another girl just like he had with you, but then heâd be missing the view from under you. Having a new girl everytime Bucky found himself feeling restless sounded exhausting. Heâd also determined that his mother would be incredibly disappointed in him if he had rows and rows of unsaved phone numbers from girls that didnât know they were being used. Finally and maybe most importantly in that moment, Bucky didnât want to start over with someone brand new. He liked your crumpled linen sheets, liked the smell of ink from the printing studio beneath your apartment. While you rode him to mutual satisfaction, he liked the way your hips rolled sensually over his, liked the slick grind and the dull bite of your nails against his stomach. He liked that after your first, when he asked you to slow down again and extended his hands to you, you took each of them without hesitation. Supporting your weight on outstretched arms, Bucky got to enjoy your hands in his while you gasped out a second. If it had been your first time sleeping together, youâd probably be too prideful or embarrassed to admit that you were tired. He wouldnât have gotten to hear that whine when you asked if he was close and he replied -smugly- not at all. If it had been your first time together, heâd probably be too prideful or embarrassed to ask you how you wanted him. He wouldnât know how sweet it felt to have your back pressed up against his chest and he wouldnât have known to turn you onto your side so he could slip in from behind you. Bucky was so comfortable in your bed with your knee hitched up over his hip, body totally open to his roaming hands. He made the right choice coming back to you and as he finished with a grunt, both arms wrapped around you tight while your arm was bent over his head, gripping his hair with the perfect amount of tension, heâd already decided to make it again.
The next morning, Bucky was refreshed, feeling like a brand new man. That was the feeling heâd been chasing last night or rather very early that morning, but the tightening in his lower body followed by ultimate release was a fine way to get there. Just like last time, heâd woken up alone only to find you in the bathroom, washing sleep from your eyes and fixing your face. His enhanced hearing meant he could listen to the tap running and the echoing âpuhâ of you spitting into the sink without having to open his eyes. Comfortable and naked against your pillows letting the familiar sounds tell the story of your morning routine. He didnât mind waiting as long as you crawled back in beside him like last time. Bucky only peeked twice before he heard the zipper of your makeup bag close and the magnet on your medicine cabinet snap shut behind the mirror. You were back with him in a moment and he turned toward your scent, aloe fresh deodorant and sharp minty breath beckoned him closer and he hummed against your lips. If he cared to move, heâd swallow down the remainder of your mouthwash then swap cool kisses until his tongue tingled against yours, but he was so comfortable. Even more so once youâd laid across his chest, bumping your nose and chin against his until he opened his eyes. Bucky dropped his arms heavily across your back, keeping you planted against him, though you hadnât struggled or made any moves to leave him. He couldnât have that with someone new. If he swapped your number for someone elseâs, heâd have to flirt and wade through the post sex awkwardness again. Heâd have to go out more and hope his charm would work on another. Heâd have to perform for them the way he had for you the first two times. The third, in your shower, was messy and wet and fun despite the soap in his eyes, which you wiped away for him while his hands were occupied by holding you up. He wouldnât have that with someone new until he made it happen and frankly he didnât want to make it happen. Not yet. Not when you were still cute and still into him and still happy to hear from him even at 2 in the morning when he looked like a creep under your window. Why trade all that just to say he could have another then another? Sex was good. That morning stuff was good too. If it was the orgasm that made him feel alive again, then the warmth of your bed and your lips drifting lazily down his chest was what made life worth living. One gal was enough for him. You were enough.
Bucky hadnât even noticed that he was drifting off again until you spoke. He didnât hear you, but he sure it didnât matter and responded with some ta sentiment of his own. âThanks. For this.â
âThank you,â you corrected and he smirked at that, eyes still blissfully closed. âHey, uhâ BuckyâŠâ You sounded nervous and he had to force his eyes open at the sound of your voice shaking around his name. You must have noticed his sudden concern and placed a hand soothingly over his chest. âI justâŠâ you bit your lip and Bucky watched the wheels churn behind downturned eyes. It was sweet, the way you could flip from bold and sexy to this. An errant curl fell out of its place and he felt the desire to pull that twisty rebel between two fingers before moving it back to follow the part youâd intended all the up to his second knuckle. Your hair was the kind he wanted to touch over and over. Not because it was your hair per se, but rather because it didn't have that acrid home perm smell or a hundred little pins holding it in place like his sisters and the other girls he ran around with. They spent hours on their waves and rolls, but you flipped a fist full to one side, fluffing it with your fingers when you wanted his attention and damn if it didnât work everytime. Before he knew it, a vibranium finger against your temple, following the curve of your ear. Your stunned look made Bucky chuckle. He even patted your cheek in encouragement. After a beat, you were gathered again. Another breath and you spoke. âI just wanted to say, I donât really do this sort of thing.â His eyebrow shot up at that and you scrambled to correct yourself. âNot this,â you half laughed then gestured to his naked body and yours, hardly clothed. âThe bringing strangers home from bars thing. I definitely wasnât expecting to see you again- not that I didnât love it- I just didnât want you to think-â
âI think youâre amazing,â he said quickly to assure you he didnât think anything else. He wouldnât either. Couldnât even imagine anything else after making an ass of himself at your first meeting. Heâs felt so out of place and vulnerable and ridiculous trying to take you home the night youâd met, but you hadnât made him feel wrong or silly for it. For that alone he was grateful. For the sex that followed, even more so. Youâd met him with just enough teasing to keep him engaged, but not so much that he felt like he was an unwanted addition to your night and whenever his eyes drifted away like he wanted to run and forget the whole stupid idea, you gently guided him back, eyes and words making it clear that you wanted him too. It was a mutual feeling of desire, as simple as it was complicated. Bucky wanted to keep it simple though, if for no other reason than to keep seeing your awkward smile duck into his neck at the eagerness in his voice. He touched your face again and repeated himself. âI donât think anything⊠just that Iâm glad I met you⊠and Iâd like to keep seeing you.â
You smiled at him and whatever silliness he felt in his confession evaporated. It was the right thing to say. You sighed and leaned in again like you were going to kiss him, before stopping short and looking up at him through your lashes. âI donât think I can say no to you.â
âThen donât,â he said, but it felt like begging again as he hoisted you higher up on his chest to kiss you again. The conversation was over and if you werenât going to say no to him, then he wanted to start his morning with as many breathy yeses as he could get.
Random serendipitous encounters became less random and serendipitous with every passing week. Bucky was feeling lighter, yet somehow more whole. Boy, did he need that. A womanâs lovinâ will do that for you. He vaguely recalls one soldier or another making similar remarks while he was in Italy. Buckyâs blue eyes belonged to the nurses back then, as his own innocence slowly died with each body dropped by his own marksmanship. This new world, new century he now had to navigate was so different. His enemies werenât always flesh and blood, even the ones that did bleed bled out in black and blue not Nazi red. Aliens, other worldsmen, some very human psychos with eerily familiar ideologies about who was of value and who was not. Bucky fought next to his friend, spilling blood of all colors when necessary, bearing the stains that Captain America couldnât as a paragon of justice and honor. Then when the ringing in his ears got too loud, he sought you out. Over and over again. He never showed up unannounced and you always answered his call, even when you shouldnât. You truly didnât know how to say no to him and he truly didnât want you to.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, Bucky knew it wasnât love, but he didnât care. It felt good and it felt right and against his better judgment it helped him sleep at night, knowing you were only a half turn away, hugging your pillow, but content to wrap your arms around him instead as long as he asked. And he asked. When he wasnât in your bed, it helped him stay sane, knowing that someone in the world was waiting on him, caring from a distance, maybe praying for his return. In the Big War, his mother prayed for him. His sisters too. In these mini wars, fought stealthily around the globe, he had you.
Rebecca was still blessedly alive, but his baby sister only remembered him when she saw his face. He would bet that you remembered him even as he schlepped through the mountains of Siberia for the last time. Always Siberia. Evil men must be allergic to sunlight. Sam had jokingly asked him why he always went back and Bucky had jokingly thrown the Falconâs coffee away, leaving Samâs hand empty and his mouth full of indignant teeth sucking. That briefing was blessedly brief and Sam didnât need the rest of his coffee anyways. The flight via jet was longer, but not as horrible as it could have been. Steveâs sympathetic glances were unbearable. Itâs the last time, Buck. Yeah, OK. The mission was a success, if you could call it a mission. Sam spun magnificently through the mouth of a cave while Bucky fired back into it, detonating the whole mountainside and leaving this particular Cold War remnant under an avalanche of snow and well kept secrets, never to be reborn. Steve dealt with the press. He had the face for it. Reputation too. Sam soaked up the due praise that came along with it, the next Captain America with his wings and his wit to carry avenging into the 21st century. Bucky, however, peeled off his heavily armed get up and peeled out of the compound without any formal announcement.
When Bucky left for long periods, most assumed he was doing what Steve Rogers would do. Ride around in his bike, traipse through the old neighborhood noting how much it changed. Captain America was the old man, the icon. He had the luxury of wandering. Bucky hadnât gone anywhere without a mission in mind since the 40âs. He was a soldier, a weapon and while his mind could no longer be weaponized against him, Bucky was still the guy taking care of things that just wouldnât wash out of Captain Americaâs shiny cowl. So when he left the compound, no one asked questions. At least not directly to him, something he was thankful for on the hour or so ride to your place. The Bronx apartment was considerably closer than a nostalgic walk through Brooklyn and he got a lot more out of it. He had no mission in Brooklyn, but you were waiting for him and that was enough.
This particular mission was no different. Steve asked him to stay on site and he declined politely as he could without actually stopping to talk to his friend. Natasha called out his hurried steps and followed him halfway to the garage before giving up at his request. It was glaringly obvious to Bucky how they got along so well. Steve and Natasha were quite the pair. Tenacious friends, like the kind of friends that never give up and definitely wonât let you give up on yourself. He saw it in her fierce allegiance and protectiveness over Clint. Now that Steve was huge and well connected in the Avenging community, Bucky supposed that made him the Barton to Steveâs Romanoff. They were insufferable do gooders too. Sure, Natasha had her fair share of red in her ledger, but once she was with the good guys, she was the best of them. Neither one would hesitate to throw themselves on a grenade or over a cliff if it meant someone elseâs chance to live. They were do it or die trying people. Sam was⊠Sam was Sam. And when he spotted Bucky making a beeline to the exit, he just waved and shouted âhave a good ride.â The wink was uncalled for and made Bucky question how much Sam really knew. He was a deadly intuitive little shit and despite Buckyâs best attempts not to even think it⊠one of the best people heâd ever known. Not that he felt the need to tell Sam that. He probably already knew it. Blessedly, Bucky ran into no other superheroes on his way through the compound. The garage, more like a hangar, was empty. Only the most expensive toys in Tony Starkâs arsenal and a high tech key coded workshop that Bucky felt so out of place in he kept a small tool box of his own so he wouldnât have to wander through it. God forbid he go digging for a socket wrench and laser one of his fingers off. Anything was possible on Stark property.
Bucky zipped across the Hudson and sped toward the zoo, stopping at the deli on the corner and looking up two floors at the flat corner window. You werenât waiting for him like usual. Heâd pulled off the road once he got away from the compound and called you like he always did, giving you plenty of advance warning. It would be more gentlemanly to ask your permission before leaving home, but you hadnât turned him down yet and if you ever did, he figured heâd keep driving anyways just to be away from everyone else for a while. Most times, when Bucky rounded the corner, slipping his bike into the space between your building and the overgrown lot next door, you found your way to that window, waving him up and putting a little something extra in his steps. You werenât there, but you knew he was coming, so he made his way to the buildingâs entrance. A call, a buzz, a knock and Bucky was in your space again, taking a deep breath and inhaling the sweetness from your kitchen.
Your back was turned to him, having opened the door for him before rushing back to your place at the counter without a formal greeting, and Bucky watched curiously as you dropped little chocolate chip cookies onto a paper plate. You waved your fingers around after using your bare hands to pull them off the parchment paper and sucked your thumb between your lips to rid it of a rogue chocolate dripping. Bucky eyed the plate presented to him then looked up into your eyes.
âI googled you,â you said proudly. Bucky nodded and said okay, like he knew what that meant. It sounded sexual, but he hadnât seen you in a week and frankly, he was more interested in googling than cookies. âItâs your birthday, Bucky! Why didnât you say anything?â You looked delightfully scandalized and held out two cookies for him, which he accepted with a half smile. They were warm and started to fall apart between his fingers, so he shoved both into his mouth before making a gooey mess of himself. While his mouth was full, you cleaned up your tiny kitchen and dropped the plate onto the coffee table in the living area, talking about how embarrassing it was that you hadnât thought to look him up sooner, but how lucky you felt that youâd thought about it after he called. You wished youâd had time to make a cake, but wanted to be home when he arrived, so freezer cookies were the best you could do after work.
You werenât dating. Not really. That was why Bucky hadnât mentioned it. Steve and Natasha wanted to make a big stink out of it, but he wanted no part of that. He just wanted to see you and get some of that good sleep he only got in your apartment after wearing you out two or three times. Sitting on the couch next to you, he took another cookie from the plate. They were better than they looked and he planned to clear the whole dang thing before taking you to bed. Maybe heâd save a few for the refractory period. Youâd need sustenance too. So Bucky took his fourth cookie, which made you smile even wider and pledge to leave the rest for later.
The truth was, Bucky hadnât celebrated a birthday in decades. The last one he could remember being awake for was in the seventies. He waited outside the governor's mansion in Bermuda for hours, watching a dinner party eventually lull and disperse. The Winter Soldier had no clue of the cruel irony watching another manâs party on oneâs birthday, the assetâs only focus was quickly killing the governor and his companion once they stepped out of the house for a walk. Heâd spared the dog though, a massive and beautiful beast without a single aggressive bone in its body who loped away from the scene whining. You hated that story when Bucky confessed it. He hadnât felt the need to go into much detail regarding his time as the fist of Hydra. At first because he didnât care for you to know. It was a fling. Fun. What pieces he did remember from those days were anything but fun. After determining that he liked you, really liked you, Bucky kept his trap shut for fear of scaring you. You knew who he was in theory, but as long as he wasnât relaying his bloodiest days to you like he was now, maybe you wouldnât look at him like the monster he didnât want to be anymore. To his surprise, you hated that he sat in a tree watching people eat and drink and laugh the night away on his birthday, regardless of whether he knew it at the time. However, you zeroed in on his attempts to spare the dog, filling in the blanks that somewhere deep within the Asset, he had maintained some of his humanity. Some of his Buckyness.
âI donât know if that helps⊠or if it makes everything worseâŠâ you said, hesitating to go on, but he caught your meaning. Was it better to think that Hydra succeed in wiping him clean, using only his body and latent memories, discarding his mind all together? Or was it somehow hopeful, to think that in all their trying to eliminate Bucky Barnes in order to free their Asset, some piece of him had remained intact? Bucky wasnât sure he could stomach the idea that any part of him had been present during grizzly assassinations, nor could he ever fully shake the idea that he wasnât. Either way, these conversations werenât what he came to you for.
While you were still looking shy, wondering if you should have stopped him from telling his story, Bucky kissed you. It was sweet, not just from the chocolate on his breath. âThank you,â he said softly, thumbing a brown smudge at the corner of your mouth. âFor the cookies. For listening.â His eyes passed over each of yours in turn. âThanks for being here.â
âOf course,â you smiled. It wasnât as obvious as you made it sound, but he liked that you felt it was. âI could be around more, you know.â Bucky didnât know what you meant, but that became clear in a matter of moments. You sucked in your lips and started again. âI know we havenât talked about...uh, well, what this is, but youâve been coming over for a while now and I guessâŠâ
âYou guess?â Bucky prompted you to continue, when you trailed off.
âI didnât expect you to still be calling me, so I guess Iâm asking,â you said. âAsking what we are now?â
âOh.â Bucky hadnât meant to say it like that, but it came out like that and your eyes widened immediately. He scrambled, grabbing your hands quickly and holding them both in a firm pile against your thigh. âOh, meaning, I didnât think thatâs what we were doing here, so this is unexpected.â
âOh,â you respond and Bucky imagines you meant it exactly how it sounded. Disappointed and the single syllable precursor to his being disinvited from your apartment. And your bed. And your everything.
âBut, I like the idea,â he supplies quickly, but he can see your look is hesitantly hopeful. âOf more, I mean. Seeing where⊠ya know.â
âYeah,â you smile and Bucky breathed out his relief. âSo weâre togetherâŠ?â
âAs together as we can be,â he said, having no clue what he meant by it, but it seemed to be the right thing considering how you kissed him. You pulled your hands from his to wrap behind his neck and fit yourself into his lap. Buckyâs hands went to your thighs, spread wide over his hips, and he squeezed his way up the backs to your jean pockets, slipping his hands inside to squeeze again. âHere orâŠâ Bucky pulled away to catch his breath and nod in the direction of your bedroom.
âTake your girlfriend to bed, Bucky,â you laughed, kissing him again and he stood with you still in his arms, legs clinging to his lower back. Girlfriend. Okay, Bucky decided in a snap. He could work with that. Especially if it meant chocolate chip cookies and birthday sex. Which reminded him and you giggled as he turned back around, hoisting you higher up on his torso with the vibranium arm below your butt and stooped carefully to grab the plate of cookies with the other before taking you and your cookies to bed.
His first relationship in the 21st century had surprised him. Come out of nowhere and nothing. One moment he was standing at a bar, nursing a beer that wouldnât affect him at all while he listened to talk about your job before not so subtly asking about his, the next it was his birthday and he had a mouthful of chocolate chip cookies while you had a mouthful of him. Itâs funny how fast life changes. If only heâd known just how quickly his new relationship would fall apart.
A/N: Iâve been cooking up this series for a while now and I thought, why not post the first bit and see what happens. First time writing for this fandom, so weâre diving in head first with a feckinâ long series and some foolinâ around. I do welcome tags if youâre interested.

DREAM SMP Swap AU
Dream = Wilbur : Dream comes into the server to help these two kids who are trying to stir shit up -- why not, right? He's got a fondness for chaos but also very protective and caring over his friends. VERY FOND OF TUBBO. To the point of.. well, brotherhood. Wilbur = Dream : He had a vision, to create a place where people could emancipate -- he's not above being the bad guy to keep that ideal in place. He's charming and self-confident and isn't afraid to use blackmail or get all up in your business. Has dirt on everyone but Dream. Constantly threatens secrets but subtle, yanno? Again, very charming, very persuasive.
Tubbo = Tommy : Still very sweet, but Big Crime often comes out to play more often than not. Also a huge trouble magnet, tried to start a...Honey smuggling empire? For some fucking reason, despite its innocent sounding plan, is a threat to Wilbur's land but no one has any idea why. Tommy = Tubbo : Tommy has an innate fucking fixation on music discs. He's got Cat and Mellohi personally. He dreams of starting up a music cafe/music area...? He and Dream get along swimmingly, Dream actually gifts Tommy a few music discs too, but also pins Tommy with the name discount Dave Strider.
Fundy = Eret : Was convinced earlier on by Wilbur to continue his 'legacy' and ideals. Fundy further grows into a neutral party, doing things only when it benefits him. Is the traitor from the first war. Eret = Fundy : Gets far too involved with stuff and the only way out is if he wiggles through the restraints on him. Yes that's metaphorical.
JSchlatt = Technoblade : Assists through uses of contracts and business deals. Like, hello, Tubbo's Honey smuggling business? He and Dream make an agreement, he supplies Dream and Tubbo with shit, and Dream does favors for Schlatt. Technoblade = Jschlatt : Anarchy lmfao. Was actually brought on by Wilbur in secret. Acted as a benefactor for Dream before turning around and causing chaos in the land Dream Tubbo and Tommy built. Blood for the blood god, only the strongest gets to the top kind of government. There's always fucking pitfights. Oops.
Philza = Callahan : Largely uninvolved in the events, mostly just there to supervise Wilbur, Tommy and Techno. Duh. Callahan = Philza : Has personal history with Dream, tries to convince him not to do the thing that could hurt everyone else. Minimally succeeds.
Alyssa = Niki : Ready to defend her home and her family. Niki = Alyssa : Neutral, but ready to back Wilbur up if need be.
Sapnap = Bad : Arsonist, goes around and burns shit whenever he wants to. His base is a Nether inspired fortress. Also, he has to deal with a Nether problem in reference to the Red Vine problem from the original SMP. Hotlands? LMFAO Bad = Sapnap : Helps when asked. Started out on Wilbur's side, as a favor, but slowly shifts neutral due to the conflict between factions.
Karl = Skeppy : Gets held hostage? That's what preoccupies Sapnap's time. He suddenly disappeears or gets trapped in a cell. Skeppy = Karl : Runs around doing supply runs. Gets his friends into various stints to try and settle the conflict through friendly rivalry and competition. It doesn't always work.
George = Ranboo : Unlike original Ranboo, George is highly unsympathetic and needs concrete fucking facts before he acts, and that kind of backfires on him in the end. As a favor to Dream (how many favors is Dream involved in honestly) he runs messages back and forth from Tubbo to Tommy. Ranboo = George : Largely uninvolved in the conflict, like Niki, but unlike OG George, is not absent. He's just there to assist. One of the most innocent and purest people on the SMP, knows when to keep his head down. When his house burns down, he doesn't really believe its Tubbo who did it -- he knows the kid has been framed because he'd been WITH him at the time, but Wilbur pressures him to admit it.
Quackity = Punz : Wilbur's loyal paid henchman. Quackity will cause shit for the appropriate price, he's not exceptionally picky. That stunt he did as Mexican Dream was great and everyone in L'Manberg loved it. Punz = Quackity : One of the best fighters under Techno. Has more morals, but keeps them secretly. Very good at hiding his true intentions/feelings.
(sorry about the other characters not being on here, i dont know them enough to make swaps, or dont know who they'd make a good swap with. Swap who you wanna swap though! i'd like to hear your take on this matter! HEADCANONS ACCEPTED TOO AT THIS POINT EVERYTHING HERE IS FROM WHAT I REMEMBER AND MY HEADCANONS)
PLOT
-Wilbur starts the SMP with Niki, slowly invites others like Ranboo, Tommy, and Tubbo.
-Tubbo expresses a desire to Fuck Shit Up and Tommy says they can get Dream, he's an expert at getting away.
-Dream is extremely protective of them both. Tubbo more than Tommy but that's fine because Tommy is largely independent.
-Tubbo gets in the weirdest shit but Tommy can roll with the punches really quickly.
-Wilbur gets tired of their crap and burns down Tubbo's establishment. It's like the Disc Wars except it's the Great Honey War. Bee War? Basically he's tired of Tubbo hogging all the Honey related expenditures.
-Dream gets the idea to make a honey smuggling empire, as a joke, but Tubbo is Big Crime and he's going with it. Tommy just wants chaos, and he was getting bored tbh.
-Eventually the Honey thing turns into Resource management, so Tubbo Dream and Tommy have a hold on all major supplies
-Shit happens and Dream, Tubbo, Tommy, Eret, Sam, Fundy and Alyssa establish an independent nation. Dunno what to call it bc the server is called the L'manberg SMP so....
-The fight for indepencence still happens. Instead of 'Green boy' Wilbur is named 'E-boy'. Dream still says "WE HAVE NO MERCY FOR YOU" when Wil calls for a ceasefire negotiation, but Wilbur does threaten the nation saying  "If there is no white flag by tomorrow, then you can kiss your sorry little arses good bye. That's my final warning."
-Turns out Fundy's been secretly funneling information to Wilbur in exchange for the safety of his friends, and also because Wilbur's his dad....uhm. Also! He and Dream are circling each other and others are like "OH MY GOD YOU GUYS ARE DEAD RINGERS FOR QUEERPLATONIC MATES JUST MARRY ALREADY" bc I like FundyWasTaken but others might not and its okay, we'll label it as platonic, but can be read otherwise depending on your tastes. But for this, it's very close platonic.
-Wilbur goads Tommy into a fight, as brothers do, but Tubbo steps in and Wilbur fucking jumps at the chance.
-This is the start of Dream's descent into madness. No one fucking threatens or pulls one of his friends like that. Denied. It's still subtle though, so he's okay for now.
-Tubbo and Wilbur face off. When Tubbo pulls back bc he genuinely doesn't want to hurt anyone, Wilbur takes the chance and beats him.
-Tubbo, however, makes a deal. Let their nation stand on its own, and he'll give up the Resource Empire he started. Wilbur accepts, with the condition that they unify their alliance with a...marriage? So basically, political marriage between Wilbur's heir, Fundy, and Dream, the leader of the revolution.
-YEAH I WENT THERE THIS IS VALID
-They're strained at first, but Dream and Fundy slowly mend their relationship post-betrayal.
-Fast forward a few months later. The Nation doesn't really have a leader, as per the agreement, but it does have a representative. All decisions are made via majority votes, and that decision is voiced by the rep and sub-rep, Dream and Tubbo respectively. Tommy's just there to have a good time and causes chaos as per usual.
-Enter Technoblade. He's been called in by Wilbur to...ah. Dismantle a little...nation. Sounds right up his alley. But he asks Wilbur to wait and see what happens.
-Tommy and Dream get the idea to hold a tournament to celebrate their independence, an all out brawl for everyone to kick back and relieve stress. There. That's where Techno comes in.
-He gets Punz to join him after like, being paid (ofc) and they fucking dominate the tournament. Dream's about to congratulate them but Techno turns the fuck around and declares his right to rule the nation. If anyone wants to fight him for the title, they're welcome to try.
-Dream loses another life to Techno trying and failing to fight it. He and a few others lost their first life sometime elsewhere? I guess? Probably by being blown up by Wilbur, idk.
-Tubbo and Dream are chased out by people who reluctantly follow Techno's orders, and Tommy, torn between his friends and his brothers, stays behind. Oh jeezus.
-Since Techno is a fighting GOD, no one's able to usurp him to make things turn back to normal. But Dream is smart, and knows Wilbur's 100% behind this. Fundy kind of knew but didn't do shit about it, which is why Dream rejects Fundy's offer of sanctuary. He can't be sure his husband will stay on his side, after all. It's nothing personal.
-Dream and Tubbo hide away somewhere, probably not a ravine but?? A mountain or something? They manage to get Sam away enough to ask him to build a super cool Redstone contraption thing that opens for them. ooooo.
-I'm not good at names but for the sake of jokes I'm gonna call their land the 'Bee's Knees' bc at some point Tubbo finds a fuckton of Hives hanging from Trees. Bee Mountain if Dream's feeling especially salty.
-SPEAKING OF DREAM. his insanity is on course now, it's slowly eating away at him and in fear of hurting Tubbo he's slowly distancing himself away. Tubbo's like what's wrong but Dream can't answer -- he doesn't know what's wrong with himself either.
-Tubbo and Dream need to go back and confront Techno, but they can't wait for long else Techno's going to obliterate everyone and their extra lives. They call Schlatt in.
-Schlatt's a pure business man and draws up a contract. He'll aid them in terms of supplies, but most of the revolution is on them. They agree.
-Tommy is actually really fucking good at lying and skirting around what he reveals to Dream and tubbo as a spy that Techno would have believed him if he didnt' know his brother. and Wilbur's warnings, of course. That results in Techno just being fucking done with Tommy's bullshit and plans his execution in another tournament? I guess?
-It doesn't go like the festival. First of all, Schlatt can't fight for shit, so why would Techno call him up the stage? No, Schlatt fights dirty. techno doesn't set much rules so theres no rule against poisoning Tommy quick and easy before the fight. Tommy loses another life and is on his last. Tubbo is spitting mad, but Schlatt points out that nothing in the contract covered this, so he's free to do as necessary. Tubbo is stopped by Dream who, at this point, is just overtaken by the need to one-up Techno.
-Also, Wilbur's been slowly persuading Dream to just. Let go. Let the monster inside of him free, he 'deserves it'. By the end of it all, Dream does. He snaps and lets loose the monster crying for blood inside him.
-Callahan is left to convince his old friend not to do it. In a moment of clarity, Dream stares on in horror of what he'd done. In his rage he managed to deplete ALL of Techno's lives (not really but shhhh), cause massive bloodshed, and terrified everyone in the process. He asks Callahan to kill him. Callahan does.
-Yes we'll get to Ghost Dream eventually.
-Anyway, Schlatt still does the Wither plan, because, uh, Drunken Rage. He was so stressed out from the ensuing conflict that he's like "LETS JUST FINISH THE REST OF YOU. THERE WILL BE NO CONFLICT IF YOU ARENT THERE TO FIGHT."
-and then he uses the line from the Lego movie on Tubbo like "Oh, Tubbster. It's nothing personal. It's just Business(tm)".
-Schlatt still dies of stroke. He does come back as a ghost though, that's one main difference.
-After everything's said and done, and the dust has settled, everyone decides to disband the nation, and just live their lives. like, they're done, wilbur, they get your point, jfc, let them rest.
-but uhhhh someone frames tubbo for setting fire to ranboo's (the server sweetheart) house. wilbur immediately decides to exile tubbo in 'anger'. acutally, he wants tommy and tubbo separated.
-tommy's not standing for it though, he fucking fights his way until wilbur threatens him and tubbo's like YES FINE OKAY I'LL AGREE TO BEING EXILED STOP THREATENING YOUR BROTHER
-tubbo's exile arc is not as sad as tommy's, but rather very tense because wilbur keeps riling tubbo up and taunting him. he still keeps contact with tommy though because they arent going to be separated just like that. no way. tubbo just gets a little more mad and gets short tempered like a lot.
-ranboo's not even that mad about it, he knows tubbo would never burn his house, there was a conspiracy on board and even if there wasn't he's like "arent yall overreacting its just a house, didnt you all do this like before the first war even began, what even (also, ranboo was WITH tubbo at the time of his house allegedly being set on fire. Not that he'll admit to it, because he and tubbo made that agreement long before)
-eventually he finds out that wilbur just wanted to pin the blame on tubbo to make him leave, and ranboo's like "IM DONE WITH YOUR CRAP WILLBUR STOP HURTING THE PEOPLE I CARE ABOUT" and leaves
-with the nation gone, people started to solidify their groups. sapnap and karl deal with their own thing, quackity still runs errands for wilbur, george is the main person ferrying messages from tubbo to tommy back and forth, etc.
-there's a funeral for dream, ofc, fundy arranged it. all of dream's shit was hidden because fundy doesnt want wilbur to get it.
-niki's still there managing her bakeshop but doubles as an informant for wilbur because she's well liked within the server
-ghost dream is present and he's a chaotic troll who mostly hangs around tommy. he's really hyper active and is always on the move, you can never catch him sitting still for like, 5 minutes

âRealisticâ Tom/Thomas Relationship Timeline
The S3/S4 Tom/Thomas affair is a theory that has been making its way around lately, and it is centered around the contrast in the interactions between Thomas and Tom during the Season 3 Christmas Special and their interactions in the Season 4 Christmas Special.Â
This means that usually the start of the relationship is viewed as coinciding with the immediate aftermath of Matthewâs death, which occurs in the Christmas Special of Season 3 (September 1921). Due to the interactions between Tom and Thomas in the Christmas Special of Season 4, the relationship can almost certainly be considered over by that time (May-ish of 1923). But what happened in between, and how long were they actually together? Thereâs one view that the affair occurs in between Seasons 3 and 4, which means that at the very longest they lasted just under six months (generally I think this view cuts it even shorter than that)...but this leaves some unanswered questions and some peculiarities, so I took another look at the canon to determine when, in fact, Thomas and Tom broke up.
(Note: I definitely know that Julian Fellowes did not intend for them to be having an affair, but also Julian if Iâm right just DM me)
Letâs start with what we know about September 1921 and May 1923âthe definite before and after pointsâfor reference:
Christmas Special Season 3âSeptember, 1921
In this Christmas special, we see Tom left behind while the rest of the family goes to Duneagle, and we see Thomas still dealing with the Jimmy situation a year after its apparent resolution. On its face, this episode features Tom being challenged in his new role in the houseâand being encouraged to step up and face that roleâand Thomas finding a way to resolve things with Jimmy.
Except thereâs a whole lot of other stuff going on in the periphery of those stories: Tom knows that Jimmy is bothering Thomas and appears to want to intervene at the fair, but he is stopped by Edna, who at one point uses Thomasâs injuries as an excuse to visit Tom and assure him that Thomas is âfeeling much better.â Andâof courseâthereâs the fact that Tom and Thomas hug at the fair (and lest you think this was a RJC/Allen Leech moment not caught by editing, it was in multiple takes! Someoneâmultiple someones actuallyâincluded it on purpose). They are friendly, aware of each other, and to be honest it isnât impossible to argue that maybe the relationship predates Matthewâs death! Iâm going to argue otherwise, however, based on how Tom breaks down when Edna kisses himâI think Edna is the first time heâs even really thought of himself in romantic terms for a long time! But Thomas is right there in the wings, and he just finally made some progress on the emotional problem thatâs been plaguing him for over a year!
Itâs a big difference from what we see in the next Christmas special, big enough to start the theory of the affair in the first place...
Season 4 Christmas SpecialâSummer 1923
Once again, Tom is left alone at Downton while the rest of the family goes to London...and the difference in how Thomas responds is striking. Heâs furious at having to wait on Tom, for reasons both we and the characters cannot quite understand. The excuses donât add upâat this point, Tom has been living at Downton for three YEARS, and this has never been a problem before. Now all of a sudden Thomas is slamming trays and clenching his fists and provoking Tom into admitting that he sees himself as Above sitting next to him...what?
Then thereâs Sarah Bunting, a Miss Sarah Bunting...whose presence infuriates Thomas while also making him eager to use her as a way to embarrass Tom. And Tom knows it, immediately. Heâs embarrassed, heâs uncomfortable, but still heâs quick to pull rank with Thomas when challenged. Something has fundamentally altered the way they interact with and perceive each other while sharing the same space.
All of this speaks to a breakup, and a messy one at that...so with the knowledge we have, WHAT exactly happened between September of 1921 and May of 1923? Letâs look at what Season 4 has to say:
4.1/4.2âFebruary, 1922
âThatâs right: itâs Valentineâs Day.âÂ
This is an important piece of the puzzle, because ThomasâNanny West drama asideâis in a pretty good mood for the Valentineâs Day episode! He engages with Daisy and Jimmyâs Valentineâs card drama with good humor and even some genuine interest...something I do not believe heâd do if heâd only recently been broken up with, and by someone who lived in the house! The big one here, though, is the dialogue Thomas has with Nanny West in which she calls him âThomasâ and he says, âthatâs Mr. Barrow to you...â
Now, where did Nanny West hear him referred to as Thomas? The episode makes a point of the fact that nannies do not as a rule spend much time with the downstairs staffâand even if they did, not many of the downstairs crew call Thomas âThomasâ on a regular basis. Nor do the upstairs folks...with one notable exception. Tom, who has to be reminded by Thomas in 4.3 to address him as âBarrowâ (more on that later), routinely messes up names and titles.
To me, this suggests that Tom and Thomas are still talking, and itâs pretty clear from Thomasâs attentions to Sybbie in the episode that it would have been easy for Nanny West to overhear it in that context. Now, this doesnât necessarily mean that theyâre still seeing each romantically, but the âMr. Barrow TO YOUâ element implies that the correction was NOT made to whoever Nanny West heard using the name (we presume itâs Tom)...and the distinction is that Nanny West does not *get* to call him that! It definitely seems like whoever she grabbed the name from has been granted permission to do that, and she Has Not. And if itâs Tom...well.
So does that mean that Thomas and Tom were done by 4.3, when Thomas DOES correct Tom on his title? Not exactly...
4.3/4.4âThe House Party (pre July 1922)
(tw on this section for discussions involving sexual assault)
The party features Ednaâs schemes and assault on Tom in order to extract a promise of marriage from him. It also features a Tom who is incredibly vulnerable and entirely out of his element with the introduction of the Crawleyâs friends. This is somewhat of a contrast from the Tom of the first two episodes, who stands up to Robert several times to intervene on Maryâs behalf, and even ropes Carson into the mission. It feels, for a moment, that despite Matthewâs death Tom has taken up the challenge presented to him at the end of Season 3 and begun seeing himself as a valuable, contributing member of the household and family.
But here, Tom speaks of himself as a fool, as walking a tightrope, and of not being understood. He relies on alcohol to get through the event, which Edna takes advantage ofâand which gives us a Tom/Thomas interaction that speaks to, in my opinion, a continuing relationship (although perhaps an altering one):
Now, if I had to guess, I would say that Tom might be less *keen* than usual, given his overall demeanor and the new scrutiny placed on him by Edna coming back to the house (not to mention the house party itself). Itâs very possible thereâs been a lull between the two of them as of late. I do not believe, however, that there is evidence of a clear break between Tom and Thomas as of the house party.
For one, Tom doesnât just say the wrong thing when addressing Thomas in the drawing roomâhe says, âThomas, would you get me a drink for Godâs sake?â That is Not how he talks to him in the Christmas Special, where he is stilted and uncomfortable and concerned about how the words will be taken. He isnât worried about any of that, and while Thomas corrects him, he doesnât seem all that bothered by it. Tomâs look of irritation at the correction isnât overdone either.
âItâs Barrow now,â also has flexible meanings. Of course it literally is what Tom is supposed to call him now...but ânowâ seems like a weird word to use when itâs been what Thomas is meant to be called for several years. It could be a post-breakup smackdown, but weâve seen what those look like in the Christmas Special, and this doesnât feel like that! I believe, rather, that Thomas is making reference to the fact that it is incorrect at that moment, something Tom should know and has been discussed!!!
The house party has both of them overworked and tense (this is also the time where Thomas has to fill in for Jimmy because Jimmy hurt his hand...which is SO ridiculous if you think about it for more than two seconds), but Ednaâs transgression still draws Thomasâs attention
And thatâs important! Thomas had been friends with Edna until this point, largely for convenience it seemsâshe is a new ladyâs maid, and she can feed him information. Thomas even worked with her to mess with Anna, who had earlier made a comment to Edna about his intentions in befriending her. Thereâs a bond forming there, and while I donât believe Thomas would genuinely support the literal details of Ednaâs plot, I donât think itâs a foregone conclusion that he would be Opposed to Edna taking advantage of what she would frame as an indiscretion on Tomâs part. Not if he disliked Tom or was predisposed to believe Tom was at fault (ie: someone who expects to be âwaited on Hand and Foot while he decides what Might Please Him Nextâ).
But right away, Thomas is suspicious the morning after. We see Thomas spying on Edna as she corners Tom, and he specifically brings it up to her later to catch her out. Already his tone is soured where sheâs concerned. Heâs sensed sheâs up to something and he can probably guess the vague idea if not the particulars...and it turns him against her almost instinctively.
So whatâs that about? Could it just be jealousy? The thing is, we know what Thomas would do if he believed that Edna and Tom were simply having an affairâwe see what happens in the S4 Christmas Special with Sarah Bunting. This isnât like that at all.Â
Thomas immediately blames Edna for whatâs happened, calling her a manipulative little witch and declaring that heâs delighted her plans didnât work. Thereâs no question of Thomasâs loyalties, even though Edna assumes heâll want to âkeep in withâ her. Not for one second does he appear to consider this, and that seems to distinguish this incident from later ones.
4.5/4.6âWhat Are These Episodes (pre-July 1922)
There isnât a lot to remember about these episodes for Tom or Thomas, and so what people may not remember is that these are the episodes Tom starts floating the idea of leaving for Americaâa full season before he tries starting that conversation again, and over two years before he actually DOES temporarily move to Boston. Now, that kind of decision takes time, but itâs kind of...strange that he begins making it here in the spring of 1922 and will not seriously consider it again until well into 1924!
Whether this has anything at all to do with Thomas canât be determined, but I do enjoy hearing Tom say it will be impossible for him to marry anyone at Downton because an upper class woman wonât have him, and would an ânice Irish working class girlâ make everyone âcomfy?â...and Thomas is standing Right There! What does it mean...
Thomas is also getting more paranoid, heâs got Baxter in the house feeding him information...and heâs generally giving off a different vibe than he has all season.Â
Here is where I think the connection is starting to see some serious cracksâTom is realizing he doesnât belong and is making moves to change that. Meanwhile, Thomas is making moves to ensure Nothing Ever changes without him knowing about it ahead of time! Tension abounds, though we donât see any evidence of it being directed at each other just yet...
4.7/4.8âInteresting and Modern (July 1922)
Thomas goes to America and Tom meets Miss Bunting...weird how that just happened like that!
Thomas is excited to go to New York, and it seems...pretty clear he fucked while he was there. I think if youâre gay and you go to New York in the 1920s and you come back and all you can tell your coworkers is that it was âinteresting and modernâ you definitely were not doing anything you can actually talk about
Now, that doesnât necessarily mean that he and Tom are Done (they may not have ever been exclusive on paper), but the overall feeling from Tom is a dejected man in limbo...he canât even say heâs a Socialist anymore. Itâs not going well. So my inclination is to say that Tom hit pause (maybe not for the first time), and Thomas is dealing with it by getting some in New York (great!) and bullying his coworkers (bad!) So why do I think they werenât totally done at that time? Because these episodes happen in the summer of 1922...the Christmas Special for S4 takes place in May of 1923. Thatâs a long time to have passed! A long time for Tom to keep Miss Bunting at armâs length, a long time for Thomas to be fuming over something...I believe that in the Christmas Special what we are seeing is the last stand of two people who are grappling with finally cutting a fraying thread.
Another Look At The S4 Christmas Special
These scenes are truly some of the most incomprehensible things Downton Abbey ever presented to us with virtually no explanation.  So letâs take another look at whatâs happening here. Â
First of all, we have the scene with Tom and Thomas entering the house after sending Edith off and leaving Tom offically on his own--they donât appear openly hostile, though thereâs some tense looking when the other person isnât and looking back down again when they are energy...but nothing egregious.Â
Not until we see Thomas slam down a tray, that is. In fact, this whole thing seems to be coming from Thomasâs anger, while Tom appears eager to just smooth it over by not causing trouble and following the rules set forth by the household norms. This seems in line with Tomâs general dispositon--with both Edna and Miss Bunting he tries to ease out rather than break things off.Â
But Thomas interprets this as dismissive, and while he says to Ivy itâs about their positions in the house...as discussed above this really doesnât logically check out. I do think it irritates him that Tom is essentially avoiding Thomas because itâs what âpleases him,â but it runs deeper than âhe used to be the chauffeur.â Because that was always the case.Â
And then Tom brings Miss Bunting back without telling anyone, and he takes her upstairs. And this makes Thomas INSANE, and Tom knows IMMEDIATELY that it will! And Tom is eager to assure âMr. Barrowâ that nothing happened (actually, what heâs really eager to do is have Thomas not stand there while he eats, but Thomas is not budging).Â
Thomas is furious. Heâs said to Ivy that he is SICK of this man, heâs tired of dealing with him...and then he tries to get Tom to sit next to him the car?Â
Thomas stole a dog one time, and I still think this might be his wildest attempt at controlling a situation we see on the show. What is going on? If Tom HAD let him sit in the back, would Thomas have still gone to Lord Grantham about Miss Bunting? If Thomas hadnât been such a jerk about Miss Bunting, would Tom have LET him? What is poor Ivy even processing this as? Am I the only one hearing Taylor Swiftâs Better Than Revenge playing?Â
Thomas acts immediately on coming to London, dropping the line of âMr. Branson is stil a young man, and he canât be expected to stay single foreverâ...heâs Angry Angry!! If they were on a break before, I donât think it had fully set in for Thomas that it might be Permanent until now. And I think Tomâs newly avoidant personality we see in other scenarios gave him the wrong impression in this respect.
In Summary
I think that the relationship was relatively âonâ from the period of September 1921 through whenever the house party took place. The house party caused some huge issues, mostly for Tom (understandably)âhe may have unfairly blamed himself for what happened and drew wrongful parallels to whatâs happening with Thomas. I think that after that it was very âoff,â but I believe that neither Thomas nor Tom really committed to ending it either...and when we see them in 1923 they are in the peak stages of finally facing the end of things.
So what caused the final shift? Perhaps Thomas came back from New York with expectations, expectations Tom found himself intimidated by. Perhaps Thomasâs increasing paranoia and Tomâs growing agnosticism towards his own beliefs and identity are related and fed off of each other until they both just did not like the person they were seeing! Maybe itâs just that Downton Abbey is a really bad place for both of them, and even though they started off trying to protect each other from that, they got sucked in and turned on each other!
In any case, by Season 5 the romantic relationship appears over for good, though there is some evidence in later episodes that Tom and Thomas settled down a bit over time (Thomas defending Tom in S5 at Brancaster, and Tom saying he hates goodbyes in reference to Thomas).Â
We will just have to see what happens when they realize they both are dating someone new, and they work together too :)Â

Vice Dorm Leader Study Date HC
Hello Anon! Sorry for the wait! I wasnât quite sure what you wanted to see so I tried my best trying cover a lot of ideas OTL If this wasnât what you wanted, please do request again with what you wish to see!Â
Trey
·      Study dates with Trey are very rare
·      Heâs always busy due to his responsibilities as vice dorm leader while preparing to becoming a 4th year, so going on dates with you in general isnât going to happen a lot
·      When you do end up going on with him though, he would cherish them and try to make it last as long as possible, trying to catch up on all the missed times with you
·      Usually, the study dates happen by Cater (best wingman ever by the way), who ends up stealing Ace, Deuce, and Grim from you on the days youâre supposed to study with them
·      Whenever that happens, Trey gets a message with a âU owe me~ ;9â from Cater as said guy drags the âinterferenceâ away
·      Trey: Cater, you shouldnât be calling our underclassmen interference... Cater: Eh~ So, are you saying you donât feel annoyed that theyâre spending more time with you-know-who? Trey: âŠYou donât see me saying it up front now do you
·      He would do his best to help you study, teaching you whatever you needed to know  - tips, tricks, what topic that would be covered the most on the exam, etc
·      Would he try to make you flustered and blush though? Yeah. He thinks youâre adorable when you blush â endearing, cute, someone he wishes to cherish with all his heart
·      Itâs why he would make passes on you, leaning towards you and brushing shoulders when he sits next to you as he helps explain something you donât know or purposely having his hand graze yours as he points out something in the textbook or your notes
·      Expect to be spoiled with all types of sweets and desserts when with Trey
·      Cake? Cookies? Pudding? He would bring all sorts of things for you two to snack on when taking a break and studying, including tea. After all, youâre someone he happens to love so he has to somehow make it obvious one way or another
·      Trey has younger siblings. Itâs why he naturally wipes the crumbs off your face since itâs habit to do so. Yeah. Thatâs it. Totally not
·      What isnât natural is when, near the end of the study date, you would either hug or kiss him on the cheek, after finally understanding something or making progress, as thanks
·      Covering half of his face, he would turn his face away to hide his red face that could rival Riddleâs hair, trying to tell you he was fine with a small stutter and wavering smile when you ask if heâs okay
·      Now if only you would realize said study dates were actually dates and he likes youâŠ
     Ruggie
·      Like Trey, Ruggie is a busy man. Busy doing Leonaâs orders while chasing after all the money and food he could possibly get, so having study dates with him are also rare
·      In fact, the percent of having study dates with him are lower than Treyâs because of how much work heâll be forced to deal with
·      Itâs why, the only times he would be able to go on study dates with you are when you come visit Savanaclaw once every blue moon
·      Most often you would come over because of Jack, whether itâs to just hang out, give him a memo, whatnot
·      The thing is though, whenever you come over, you end up meeting Jack a bit later because something would always come up right when heâs about to meet you
·      And itâs totally not suspicious that it happens whenever Ruggie is coming back to the dorms. 100% true.
·      Donât worry about Jack by the way. It so happens that a certain dorm leader kidnapped said wolf because he happens to be a good wingman when heâs bored
·      Also, heâs running low on blackmail on Ruggie. Might as well get a refill when he can
·      When seeing you alone at the entrance either being bothered by the other dorm members or looking bored, Ruggie ends up taking you to the lounge and chat with you
·      The conversation always  school orientated with school work and teachers coming up
·      While youâre in the middle of complaining about Trein and Crewel again over their ridiculous assignments (like seriously, whatâs so important about hair-color changing potions again? And what about the history of the schoolâs chandelier, is this shade???), Ruggie teases you about not being able to do something âas easy as thatâ
·      He does his best to hide his soft side towards you when you sulk about it, seeing it as you pouting. Which is adorable and cute in his eyes and he loves  seeing it
·      Just as youâre about to get up and leave from getting annoyed, Ruggie quickly offers you his help on your assignments despite saying it in a teasing tone
·      Yes, he likes to troll with people a lot but he can be serious when he wants to, evidently seen when he helps you through the questions
·      His explanations arenât great, yet he doesnât give up trying to get you to understand and solve the questions
·      Will he tease you while explaining? Yes. Will he snicker at you and give his infamous infuriating cute smirk? Yes.
·      In the end, the assignment still gets done along with you feeling better with the concepts you werenât so sure of thanks to him
·      Itâs his turn to blush as you give him a surprise hug, ending up covering his face with both hands and sigh once you let go
·      As this happens, a certain lion continues to film the whole thing while covering the mouth of his âpreciousâ kouhai with a smirk on his face. Heâs not sorry when he shows it to Ruggie by the way.
  Jade
·      Having study dates with Jade happens more frequently than Ruggie and Treyâs solely because Jade would make sure he has one with you
·      By that, he means using the pretext of having to âtutorâ you per request by one of the staffs to get to go on one with you
·      He will proudly say itâs his favorite excuse to use against Azul and Floyd since they wouldnât be able to bother him nor interfere when heâs trying to spend some time with you
·      Yes, he enjoys hanging around them for entertainment but he has his own limits too. Plus, he wouldnât have to useâŠ.some other methods to get them off his back though he wouldnât hesitate to do so if they interfere (cough blackmail cough)
·      Studying with Jade is difficult no thanks to how much he enjoys teasing you
·      Heâll be kind, polite, and courteous but heâll do everything he can to get to see you blush
·      Brushing shoulders and hands âincidentallyâ is nothing compared to the times he explicitly makes a move on you like gently cupping your hand whenever he takes your pencil so he could write some helpful notes in your notebook or sitting really close to you in general
·      The worst part is how heâs actually good at teaching you with whatever youâre struggling with
·      Makes good analogies, explains things thorough enough for you to grasp the foundation, surprisingly writes neatly and draw good diagrams â he truly lives up to his position as one of Azulâs hands and vice dorm leader
·      That along with the fact he would be providing hospitability such as teas and snacks that you enjoy definitely makes him seem like a kind gentleman
·      He enjoys teasing you during the whole time, having fun with your reactions his favorite other than seeing you blush being you being annoyed
·      Just needs to shade here and there to get a good grasp and push your buttons only to get amused in the end from seeing you huff and pout or chuckle at any smart remarks you make towards him
·      However, when you give him one your softest, genuine smile or initiate any physical contact yourself, itâs going to be his turn to blush and perhaps even tsun a bit
·      Will go wide eyes at first with cheeks dust pink to turning lobster-red if you point it out while covering half his face and look away a bit
·      Hugging is a whole different story though where you would be very successfully into getting Jade to go âJade. exe has stopped workingâ after surprising him with one once you finally understand and get whatever you were confused with and do it out of happiness
·      Once the date ends, heâll show you out before going back into the dorm and find Azul and Floyd who he knew was spying during the whole thing
·      He finds all the photos they took of him blushing and either would burn them or delete the files if saved on phone or PC
·      He does secretly keep the ones that includes you looking happy or being close to him
   Jamil
·      Study dates with Jamil happens a good amount of time thanks to Kalim who makes sure it happens
·      By that, literally Kalim would get everyone in Scarabia to help out but thatâs another story for another time
·      Out of all the vice dorm leaders, heâs the one that takes the study date seriously
·      Wouldnât really strike up a conversation because he would be focused on trying to get as much done as possible no thanks to how heâs busy in general
·      That being said, most of the time would be more studying orientated
·      Jamil would be attentive and help you with anything you need help with, going over them and making sure you get at least the foundations solid
·      His explanation and tutoring skills are nearly par to Treyâs probably because of his many years of experience with Kalim, his sibling, and now, the other dorm members
·      So, the idea of teasing you wouldnât come up initially. Keyword: Initially
·      Just because heâs focused on studying doesnât mean he isnât aware of his surroundings and otherâs behaviors, especially yours
·      Heâs aware his attraction towards you is very much mutual since he practically caught you who-knows-how-many-times you looked at him, only to blush and stutter whenever he asks if thereâs a problem
·      Cue the teasing like the rest but unlike the other three above, his is more subtle
·      Heâll be testing the water-  see how far he can go with teasing you
·      He honestly enjoys how youâre trying to keep a straight face, all cool and collected when he sits next to you to the point only a pencil case would slip through the space between you two
·      Acting innocent and nonchalant, Jamil struggles to not smirk when he sees your ears turn red and the corner of your lips twitch
·      Totally would pull âface too close for comfortâ on you when he finds you getting distracted from whatever he explains something to you
·      It would only happen once and never again though during the next few study dates since heâll realize he nearly lost his self-control when he unconsciously and nearly closed the gap between the two of you
·      What do you mean you heard him click his tongue? He did no such thing. Itâs not like he was disappointed or anything because he wanted to-
·      When you hug him, heâs not going to be calm. Whatsoever
·      Pulls his head over his head and tells you not to come near him as he pulls his hoodieâs strings and try to cover his face completely
·      This is when Kalim comes out of his hiding place and tries to get Jamil to calm down while telling you that he was âjust passing byâ when you ask where he came from
·      It isnât until heâs back at his room does he start calming down only to drag his hands down his face from realizing he messed up on trying to look cool around you
·      Kalim: You like them that badly, huh~ Jamil: Shut up
 Rook
·      Study dates with Rook is bad for your heart. Not because he does weird things to you or anything. Itâs just thatâŠheâs rather direct. Very direct
·      Although he does an excellent job teaching you, he doesnât hide his attraction towards you at all
·      Calls you all sorts of endearment without any shame when you come over to Pomefiore to have the study date with him: mon cĆur, mon chĂ©ri, mamour, and more
·      Like with everyone else he takes interests in, he very much likes to look at you. Even though itâll distract you, heâs genuinely happy and in bliss getting to spend time with you
·      To him, getting to see the you studying with such calmness makes him think you look absolutely enchanting, loving to see you putting effort and trying your best
·      Despite being a hunter, he isnât aware how you tend to look at him when heâs focused though nor does he know that you like seeing his serious side
·      âŠand you probably shouldnât since the minute he realizes this he probably would take advantage of it and cause you more problems down the road
·      He spoils you a lot, mostly because he wishes to see you happy. Meaning, he would prepare all sorts of things to make sure youâre feeling comfy and happy when youâre with him
·      In all seriousness though, he does education justice when heâs the one tutoring/teaching you
·      Goes over everything thoroughly to the point where he would continue practicing and quizzing you until he knows you actually understand everything
·      Every time you get something right, he praises you a lot to the point you would probably feel bashful
·      When youâre feeling down or frustrated from the fact you canât understand something or from anything in general, Rook is the one whoâll realize it first which often leads to him being the one to make you feel better in a short amount of time through words of encouragement
·      In fact, heâs one of the two people who would be the best comforter of the vice dorm leaders
·      By that, heâs the one you would probably pour your heart to without worries and end up feeling better after every single study date
·      Hugging can go two ways with Rook
·      When he senses you about to hug him (happens 90% of the time btw), heâll hug you back with the same amount of excitement. He wouldnât let go after you realize what youâve done out of pure instinct and would instead hug you tighter while your face burns in his arms
·      When you catch him off guard, heâll freeze and blush, completely not expecting it. Probably would be his first time ever getting flustered too as he tries to quickly recover once you let go of him
      Lilia
·      Study dates with Lilia is more like a hang out than anything else
·      He literally will pull the âimmortal-beingâ card, where heâll look over your shoulder and see what youâre doing before going on a long story-time telling of how each theorem, principle, historical event, etc. was discovered when he was whatever age-old at the time
·      When dealing with assignments, he would complain about doing them, muttering along the lines of âback when I was in school, we didnât have to do theseâ, âkids arenât going to even use what they learned in real lifeâ, and so on
·      Donât expect him to even attempt to study. He would ask you why he would ever need to when he lived who-knows-how many years and being at all those events that took place
·      With all of that being said, you would think it would be impossible to get anything done, doing a great job distracting you especially when he just name drops a famous historical person and tells you the guy/galâs life from baby to adult all in one go
·      âThat kid used to be so cute, as expected they would end up being this greatâ, âWhatâs this nonsense? How did that brat even did that when they couldnât even answer 1+1 correctlyâ-
·      However, when you try to study and start struggling, he would always help you
·      Thereâs going to be teasing and he is very bold about it
·      When you stifle a laugh from his stories, he sulks first only to kabedon you in your chair
·      Leaning closer to you, heâll ask whether youâll take him seriousness now, gently holding your chin so you wouldnât be able to look away
·      He does end up letting you go with a smirk, giving you some space and time to get over what had happened in less than a minute, thinking that you looking like a deer caught in headlights with a bright blush made you look extremely adorable
·      Itâs not shocking that he teaches you well, especially when heâs the one that taught Sebek, Silver, and Malleus. How? Heâll never tell you how but the look their faces when you ask them makes you decide not to think about it further
·      Lilia also happens to be the other greatest comforter, probably even better than Rook
·      Itâs because he raised three children on his own, heâs able to pick up any stress or sense the struggle youâre having when you do your assignments or studying before you say anything about it
·      When it happens, he has you take a break on studying and lends you an ear, making sure you say everything thatâs in your chest since he knows youâll be needing it
·      By the time heâs done helping you and you hug him out of gratefulness, heâll be surprised and widen his eyes at first
·      He does quickly recover and hugs you back with a satisfied smile, rather seeing you happy and filled with joy than anything else
·      And itâs obvious thatâs the case since once you leave, Malleus, Silver, and Sebek would ask him if anything good happened

Umm hi I donât know if you still take ACOTAR requests anymore but if you do can I request an azriel x reader where heâs in love with her and is afraid of rejection but he doesnât know that she loves him too? đđ»đđ»
hi nonnie, iâll always accept an acotar request, hehe! did this in headcanon form, hope you donât mind <3 itâs quite long and a little rough around the edges, but i hope you like it! ps. tumblr mucked up the formatting, some dot points donât want to be indented. i hope it still makes sense xÂ
when your and azrielâs paths crossed, it was the mother at work again. after mor, azriel didnât think heâd ever have the strength for love again. the aching and the pining had taken their toll, and the appeal of the mating bond had faded. to feel it all again, to risk his heart like that again - he couldnât. and yet, the mother saw fit that he would.Â
+++
he first met you in the palace of hoof and leaf, and it didnât mean anything at the time; a strangerâs kindness, or if he indulged his cynicism, a hawkerâs ploy. you were a commoner, a milkmaid who came to sell your products in the markets. heâd been at the neighbouring stall, waiting for the clerk to put together the only tea brew in prythian that could placate his migraines.
âsir, mr. shadowsinger, sir,â you called, âcould i offer you a sample of my goatâs milk? maggie-may is very special, her milk can be just as good as a healerâs work, i swear it. try it, try it, sir.âÂ
azriel looked you over, glad that cassian wasnât here to make that particular moniker stick. one brow raised in dubiety, he nodded and held out his hand - might as well, he thought, tired and getting ever more desperate for his tea. this didnât show outwardly, of course; azrielâs face was as neutral as ever, his shadows coiling about his talons. your gaze was expectant as he tried the sample, and while it was a little too earthy for his taste, he nodded all the same. perhaps it had encouraged you too much, because then you asked: âcould i perhaps persuade you to buy a pint?â
azriel had no interest at all, yet he couldnât help but notice the detail: your fraying sleeves, the imperfect glass bottles, the beginnings of dark circles under your eyes. and yet you were smiling, you were sweet, being very generous for someone who had to presumably make a living selling fresh products. not for the first time, azriel made a purchase that only someone of the inner circle could afford, and one that didnât really benefit him. âiâll take several,â he said, looking at the handful of wooden caddies, mostly still filled with milk bottles. âiâll take it all.âÂ
the clerk then handed azriel his brew while you stood there, wide-eyed and speechless, working through a range of emotions. at first you thought he was mocking you, but when he turned around again, fiddling with his coin pouch, you realised he was serious. âbut, sirâ maggie-mayâs milk sure is delicious, but only in moderationâ i couldnât expect someone to buy it allââ
âas much as youâd let me, then,â he amended, being mindful not to impose or patronise. you bit your lip, trying to tally up the ultimate price, trying to gauge whether this man could even afford it. two gold, you said, trying your luck. azriel merely fingered his coins, placing the expected two and an additional three on the counter. he mustâve noticed your shock; you had frozen, after all, perhaps even stopped breathing. âsince maggie-may is so special,â he drawled, earning a disbelieving laugh from you.Â
that night, cerridwen, nuala, and elain were very confused at the sight of bottles and bottles of milk laying in wait on the kitchen counter in the house of wind. the note - clearly by azrielâs neat hand - read: use within five days.
+++
from then on, you always engaged azriel when you spotted him in the market. you could never forget his generous first purchase, and so while he waited for the tea master to finalise his special brew, you would entertain him with an endless supply of free samples of new products. over the years, azriel saw your business extend from milk to also include cheese and soap. he learned unnecessary things about your cattle, such as the supposed social dynamics and - mother forbid - adultery that mr. sweet pea the goat seemed prone to. over time, azriel grew comfortable enough to share some of his stories and observations, the things heâs seen in other courts. it took a while to realise you had become more than his mere acquaintance, and perhaps it was because you were outside his usual spheres of the inner circle and his spy network. to have someone outside was new, and a little jarring at times. the different experiences, the contrasting perspectives - it was refreshing, and reminded azriel how far heâd come since his miserable youth. when he was with you, the stakes werenât so high, the conditions not so dire. you were a spot of calm, a reminder that life could be something other than the courtâs defense.Â
+++
one time when he visited - his tea no longer a requisite for him to make an effort to come in - you were noticeably subdued. âmr. sweet pea passed away,â you revealed, eyes wet and voice thick. something about that seized his heart, his shadows growing restless. âhe was so special.â you actually said that about each of your cattle, something that azriel had started to find endearing, because he knew you really believed it.
social tact was not a strength of his - azriel knew he tended to be rigid and too formal - so he stumbled over some stilted condolences. it felt awkward and impersonal; azriel couldnât empathise with the death of a pet, but he wanted to make it hurt less. he still remembered what the late goat had looked like the last time you had brought him in - an old thing, with a long beard and a mix of brown and black fur. strong, impressive horns, one which had a sizeable chip missing.Â
so that night, he did what he could and sketched that image he had in his mind, of mr. sweet pea looking very wise and ponderous, if a little tired. azrielâs time as spymaster had bestowed him a keen eye and dexterous fingers, allowing him to make the necessary sketches to give his colleagues a clearer picture when necessary - of maps, of creatures, of profiles. they tended to be a little rough and raw, nothing particularly artistic. he thought the same of his current piece, and hesitated over whether it was good enough.
when he finally gave you the sketch the next day, you went very still. he started stumbling over some excuses, but you soon interrupted him with a shaky breath. âthis is so thoughtful, azriel. thank you so much.âÂ
+++
azriel grew bolder, and interactions started to occur outside the markets. heâd invite you for tea, indirectly revealing one of his interests. he was a hard man to read, his expressions subtle when not stoic, but you learned. outside of professional matters, he was rarely straightforward, and tended to express his emotions in delicate, layered ways. his care for you was in the way he listened, how his attention never wavered when you were speaking with him. it was how he kept you close when you two navigated busy streets, how he lifted a wing over your head for cover when it rained, how he was content to spend time with you at your stall - sometimes for hours - despite his preference for quietude.Â
+++
when work took him away, you two would exchange letters. azriel didnât realise how dangerous a thing it was, because you quickly became a very intimate and constant part of his life. the act of writing tricked him, making it easier to truly express his thoughts - there was no pressure of navigating the immediate reaction, no incentive to keep his words short. you managed to draw so much out of him. he was mindful of each letter of yours he received, keeping them safe and tied together with an old ribbon of yours heâd saved before you could throw it away. he would never admit it, but work abroad tended to be overwhelming: while secure in his networkâs quality of intelligence, being in anotherâs territory always meant having to deal with various variables and vulnerabilities, usually unknown. maybe your letters would have made it all a little more manageable if they didnât elicit such longing within him. your words made him smile, yes, but they also made his heart ache. he missed you.
+++
after a lengthy assignment in the dawn court, azriel was relieved to be back in velaris. his shadows swirled and whispered around his shoulders, eager to feel your presence too. he knew they fascinated you, how playful they could be sometimes. yet, azriel couldnât find you at your empty market stall. it was odd - you hadnât mentioned moving in your recent letters, and he couldnât find you in any of the other market squares either. soon his shadows grew restless, embodying the concern that was rising.
he employed his spy network to find your farm, hoping it wouldnât be too intrusive to just show up unannounced. you had mentioned some details in passing before - it was a modest place, with a small house and a meagre hill of grass to feed a handful of goats and sheep. the door was answered by two worried faces, who took one look at azriel and grew even more distressed. âour sonâ itâs not our son, is it? it canât beâ he justââ
âiâm here to see your daughter,â azriel interrupted, too preoccupied to remember polite niceties. they were confused, guarded, but let him through. the hallways were narrow, his wings often knocking against the wall sconces. he listened as they explained your condition - an illness had befallen you, leaving you bedridden for days. apparently a healer had told them itâll pass with rest and water, and with that reassurance, azriel forced himself to remember his place. right in front of your closed door, he willed his shadows away from his face, called upon his familiar impassiveness. turning around to face your parents, he amended, âmay i see your daughter?âÂ
your room was dark, the curtains drawn. his heart raced as he heard your laboured breaths, and something pulled at him when he saw the small desk in the corner, an unfinished letter atop it. âazriel?â you whispered, voice sounding so small. âis it really you?âÂ
he neared, taking a cautious seat on the side of the bed. you were shivering, but the thin sheet covering you stuck to your skin with sweat. âyes, itâs me, sweetheart,â he said, the endearment slipping out before he could stop it. his throat closed up immediately after, but your vague movements suggested you didnât even realise, and that you werenât all there. he could see the feverish blush high on your cheeks, even in the dim light.
âyouâre too big for this room,â you mused softly, making azriel smile despite his worry. indeed, he had to bend down to avoid hitting his head, and keep his wings tucked in uncomfortably tight. he took your hand in his, and even in your feverish haze, you could register the roughness of his scarred hands, but they always handled you gently. âwhy didnât you tell me in your letters?â he asked, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles. your discomfort was clear in your frown, in your downturned lips. noticing the basin on the bedside table, he took the damp rag on your forehead and dipped it into the cool water, wringing away the excess before gently placing it atop your head again.Â
âi⊠didnât want to trouble you with⊠with something trivial. a few more days and⊠and iâll be back to work.â a weak smile pulled at your mouth, and azriel gathered both of your hands in his again. he shook his head at your line of thinking.
âyour health isnât a trivial matter to me,â he said, leaning close and cupping your cheek. in hindsight, it was so obvious that he had been in love with you far longer than he thought. it was all so rueful, the fact that he had let it happen again. despite it all, he pressed a kiss to your hand, trying to ignore how it trembled. your smile strengthened then, tracing a finger over his brow and down the bridge of his nose. azriel took a deep breath to savour the touch, and soon you two were merely watching each other, azriel wondering what thoughts were running through your slightly added mind. your lids eventually started to droop, however, but still he stayed even when you fell asleep, taking care to change the cool rag when necessary. his shoulders slumped when his head fell into his hands, squeezing his eyes shut tight. with such a revelation, what was he to do from now on?Â

azriel didnât think he could be a good lover to you - even if he so very much wanted to be. his job took up so much of time, and it required him to be secretive. azriel wouldnât ever be able to share everything with you, for the sake of keeping you safe. even if he could, there was just something in his nature that kept him reserved and pushed others away. there were so many things heâd rather leave in the past, and so many more that he wished he hadnât been part of. there was that, but also his loathsome scarred hands - a reminder of those darker days. no matter how gentle, his touch would always scratch and scrape. once you took notice of how neglected they were, left to dry out and sometimes even scab, you took to work to concoct a nourishing lotion. âyou have to be gentle with yourself, azriel,â you had once told him, gently applying the salve to his hands. they were rough but warm against your skin. âyou do so much.â
+++
and so, everything he did with you was tinged with a hint of sorrow. he couldnât bring himself to confront you with the severity of his feelings, but he also couldnât quite remove you from his life - you had become a friend. you eventually noticed that he started to let his touches linger: when he hugged you, heâd curl arms and wings around you, enveloping you wholly; when you were near, his shadows would stretch toward you, as if revealing a hidden desire. when you reached for his hand, he would always grip it firmly, and when you came very close for some unimportant reason, his gaze would always linger on your face, flicking so often to your lips.Â
+++
one night you had invited him over to the farm, wanting to introduce him to the latest addition of your household: a baby goat, just over a week old. she was as white as snow, and kept nibbling at your hair as you held her in your arms. âwhat should we name her, azriel?â you had asked, too preoccupied to notice how tense he was, hands in his pockets. âi was thinking of marjorie, or maybe miss marjorie⊠hey, whatâs wrong?â his face was unusually expressive, his shadows roiling about his talons as if in distress. putting down the goat, her legs still clumsy and gangly, you stepped closer to azriel, reaching out. he shook his head, trying to school his face but you knew him by now. your shoulders slumped, recalling his strange behaviour over the years - he was present in most ways, but avoidant in others. âi wish youâd talk to me, azriel,â you murmured, taking his hand and hoping he wouldnât mind the dirt. âyou mean so much to me.â
it all bubbled up then in that small barn, the light dim and the smell of earth pungent. you let out a rueful laugh, rubbing your eye. âiâm in love with you,â you said, very quietly at first. immediately you felt so naive to be doing this. the fact was that azriel came from a different life, one that saw him as a leader of the court, who worked with powerful and beautiful people, fae who were richer and stronger and vastly more interesting. azrielâs mere presence in your life was extraordinary enough. and yet, you had found yourself falling in love despite the impracticability of it, found yourself admiring his kindness, his quiet generosity, his strength and resilience and dry humour. you shifted, looking right into his eyes. even if your love was unrequited, he deserved to be told - if only to let him know that he indeed was loved by one more.  âiâm in love with you. i donâtâ i donât expect you to say it in return, but i can no longer keep it to myself. i love you.âÂ
that threw azriel. he had fantasised of course, indulged in the scenario. but now, as you waited for his response, his thoughts stuttered. what? he wanted to say, unable to believe what he actually so very desperately wanted to believe. you grew nervous as the silence lengthened, azrielâs face as stoic as ever. you shook your head, covering your mouth in regret. âiâm sorry, iâ i shouldnât have said anythingââ
he gripped your shoulders tight, gaze intense and voice low. âi also love you.â
âwhy do you say it like itâs a bad thing?â the solemnity which had tinged your relationship for some time was subtle, but you had felt it, and it had bothered you.Â
azrielâs hands came up to cup your face, and he quickly shook his head. âitâs not,â he said, he urged. âitâs not, itâs not.â and then his lips met yours, chapped and rough, kissing you slowly, thoroughly, firmly. the conviction made your heart melt, and you gripped his wrists, feeling his racing pulse and caressing it, kissing him back, standing on your toes, letting him steal your breath. âi love you so much, sweetheart,â he sighed against your lips, nose brushing against yours. you went to reply but then azriel had claimed your mouth again, one hand snaking around to your back and the other to the nape of your neck. the light shifted behind your closed eyes as his wings came down to envelope the both of you, and your fingers reached to tangle in his hair, to trace the shells of his ears.
when you two parted again, his grin was lopsided and a little wry. âi just couldnât believe it,â he murmured, his eyes shining with emotion. why not? you wanted to ask, wondering what it was that had held him back for so long, but decided to delay it for another day. all you could do was hug him tighter, just glad for the sight of his smile and the feeling of his relief. glad for his happiness.

The mission was boring as she thought it was gonna be how normal soldiers couldnât handle this sheâll never know on the airship ride home she opens  the box Oscar gave to her a note on top says âhave a great day and stay safeâ she smiles at the note and sticks it in her ammo pocket it looks like a brownie is some kind and yang leans over and says âwhere did you get thatâ
âOscar made it for meâ she says taking it out of the container it smells like a peanut butter protein bar âooo come on share with me pleassssâ yang says putting her hands together âugh your lucky Iâm a good sisterâ she breaks off a small piece and hands it to yang and takes a bite of her own and itâs amazing it Taste like a peanut butter brownie but somehow better itâs somehow not dried out or crumbly yang seems to have a similar opinion âgod if you donât marry Oscar i will his food is too goodâyang says with a laugh she kicks yang in the leg âI know right I can barely eat the cafeteria food anymoreâ her and yang chat a bit about food until they finally land Oscar is standing on the landing pad waiting for her she bounce on her heels excitedly despite how tired she is when the door finally opens she rushes out to hug him âhow did it goâ he asks wrapping his arms around her shoulders âoh it was easy but soooo boring I donât know why they asked us to do itâ she says leaning into him he chuckles âwell Iâm glad it wasnât dangerous at least did you like itâ he asks sheepishly she puts her head on his âyeees brothers it was great what was itâ he unwraps his arms and looks at her âthereâs no name for it yet but itâs kinda like a protein brownie was it too grainy or anything what about the after tasteâ he asks âI didn't even realize it was supposed to be healthyâ she puts her hands on his shoulders âOscar Iâm gonna need more of thatâ he smiles âhappy to make some more tonightâ he says proudly yang walks past and ruffles his hair âmake sure to make enough for me too kiddoâ and walks off âhow about that nap ruby my teams still on mission so we should have some timeâ he says taking her hand âyes pleaseâÂ
They walk back to team alpns dorm room after ruby changes into something more casual Oscar was already wearing his normal clothing he sits on his bed and smiles âIâm gonna get to have two naps todayâ she sits down next to him and throws her arm around him "you and your team sure like your naps huh" he smiles as they lie back on his bed "honestly who doesn't like naps I never use to be a huge cuddler but itâs nice to have someone close to you, you knowâ they lie back Oscar resting his head on rubies shoulder âwell I do wish my team took naps together sometimes yang is a big cuddler too but Weiss doesnât like being warm and Blake canât sit still even so less than youâ he snorts as he takes her hand running his thumbs along her knuckles âwell Iâm sure the others wouldnât mind you joining our naps if have to ask but i'll warn you ren sits up in his sleep Jaune snores and i talk in my sleepâ she raises an eyebrow âyou didn't last timeâ she says âthat's cause we were smoking but if i take a nap or if im really tired you can actually talk and I'll talk backâ she grins âwell what do you talk aboutâ he rests his head on her chest âusually about my aunt or all yall but Nora has told me i say lots of stuff about you if i'm askedâ he says his cheeks getting just a tiny bit rosy she grins and plants a kiss on his nose âwell i hope i get the chance to ask but i'll probably fall asleep first im super tiredâ she rolls over and wraps herself around him oscar adjusting to lay on her arm pulling a blanket over them "well if you can get me to talk I'll answer any question just nothing to embarrassing please" he says âi would like to know what you have to say tho so maybe i'll try to hold out just a bit longerâ she says closing her eyes as oscar lets out his relaxed sigh about half of Oscars communication was nonverbal she liked to mentally catalog the things he does when he relaxes he lets out a long almost high pitched sigh it makes her happy to hear that and it helps her relax her thoughts starts to get fuzzy as sleep takes her she wakes up a few hours later laying on her back oscar laying on top of her them both having wrapped around each other she hears quiet murmurs coming from him to quiet to understand "Oscar are you still asleep" she whispers no response "Oscar are you comfy" he nods his head "of course I'm comfy I'm cuddling with ruby" she snickers he was definitely still asleep "who's the coolest person you know" she she's "ruby for sure she's so good at fighting and everyone trusts her I wish I was more like her" she runs her hand through his hair "how do you feel about ruby " she asked "I'm in love with her she makes me feel strong and weak at the same time when she's with me I feel like I'm safe and that we could do anything together i want to be with her forever" she's crying now "oh shit I didn't expect him to be that honest" she thinks as tears run down her face "I love you too Oscar"   she kisses the top of his head âyou know i never used to want like romantic stuff and all the fluffy garbage i just wanted to be a huntress and fight grim stuff like that but you make me want that stuff i wanna take you on dates and like hold your hand and stuff there are a bunch of things i wanna do likeâ she pauses resting her head on his âi forgot you were asleep for a second i'm starting to embarrass myself i do love you tho i dont know when your supposed to say that we've only been i guess dating for what 2 and a half weeks my dad always joked that huntsmen relationships move really fast nothing like holy shit we might die to move a relationship forward right but you make me feel like i don't know amazing and I love being with you you make all my worries disappear even if it's only for a little bit and i'm rambling and your not talking backâ oscar lifts his head âits cause im awake and i love it when you rambleâ she feels her face light on fire âw-what when did you wake upâ he hums happily âaround we might die i think it was nice that stuff you said you can ramble longer if you want what that new gun you saw in that magazineâ she smiles âit's a roller delayed blowback sniper rifle its a smaller caliber than crescent rose but it has a longer effective range because of the way the bore is shaped i prefer bolt actions to semi automatics for a long range rifle semi autos have there merits and stuff it's a lot lighter than crescent rose as well on account of it not also being a giant scythe you know i was thinking about carrying a pistol too crescent rose is great but shes heavy and she's also really hard to conceal even when shes folded speaking of i need to clean her gears a bunch of dust got in them today you said you wanted to learn weapon maintenance i could teach you today if you wantâ âsure i can learn there's a lot of things oz knows but it's like a big library without a librarian its all jumbled upâ she scratches the back of his neck âwell i do not understand the dewey decimal system but i'm happy to helpâ they both giggle at her joke ruby keeps rambling until the rest of team alpn returnÂ
Oscar is walking ruby back to her dorm they come to her door and they turn to face each other and oscar rubs his hands together âso ruby uh I got permission with ironwood to leave school grounds as long as someone's with me so I was wondering if youâd like to maybe go out like on a dateâ she smiles and puts her arms around his shoulders âsounds amazing sweetie Iâm free this weekend where do you want to goâ he blushes and says âwell I actually have something in mind but I wanna keep it a surprise if thatâs okâ she kisses him on the cheek âof course casual clothes or should i dress niceâ he shakes his head âi mean it's really up to you but were not going somewhere fancy just a place I think you'll like" she smiles and kisses his nose and he leans up a little so there lips are level "can i kiss you again" he asks just above a whisper her pressing her lips gently against his is her answer they hold the kiss for a few moments Oscars hands drifting to ruby's waist when they separate she says "i think we're getting pretty good at that" Oscar smiles avoiding her eyes "yeah um It's certainly enjoyable" they break the hug "I'll see you in the morning I'll make that stuff you like ok" he says "yes awesome you're the best Oscar good night" she says as she slips into her from her teammates giving her knowing smirksÂ

BNHA Chapter 310 Spoiler Thoughts:Â âThe First and Second Holdersâ
Some fan translations are out and itâs time to flex some thoughts out again!  I couldnât do them last night because I didnât have all the scan images with me and I didnât want to jump the gun with only text descriptions.  Anyway, this was mainly an exposition chapter that properly introduces us to the second and third OFA Holders, especially the 2nd and what his relationship to the 1st is.  This might not be as long as others âSpoiler Thoughtsâ Iâve written, but letâs see:
First off, we have a colored cover page by Horikoshi-sensei himself! Â Itâs a solo page featuring Vigilante Deku and he looks badass! Â Deku looks ready to kick ass and take names. Â And, his Mid-Gauntlet is colored red like a lot of us thought and it adds to the theory that Melissa Shield did create it like she did with Dekuâs Full-Gauntlet back in Two Heroes.
The chapter starts in a dark and rainy night. Â A large woman (sheâs like maybe 10ft tall; sheâs taller than All Might who I think is 7ft) with a mutant-type quirk whoâs getting attacked by some civilians because they think sheâs a villain. Â Deku jumps in to stop the attacks and the woman explains that she was just trying to go to one of the evacuation centers at a hero school. Â Deku is kind enough to give her her umbrella back and reassure her that things will be ok. Â
I gotta say that this whole situation is scarily close to real life right now.  I donât like getting too political, but we live in a scary world where discrimination is, unfortunately, alive and well...  If you are a POC, you can be attacked from anywhere with the only reason being that âyouâre a danger because of the skin you were born withâ. Itâs horrific, itâs disgusting, and itâs been around for a long time.  Even in the BNHA universe, there used to be cults solely dedicated to discriminating against mutant-type people (we learned this back in the My Villain Academia Arc).  So, like in the real world, this problem has risen again.  Thankfully, there are people like Deku and All Might who are more than willing to help someone in need regardless of who they are.  BNHA hits too close to home sometimes. Â
Anyway, going back to the BNHA story. Â Before All Might leaves to help the woman in his Batmobile, he hands Deku some Pork Katsu in a cute bento box wrapped in a bunny cloth! Â Deku is visibly happy and thanks All Might for the meal. Â This is so cute! Â Iâm so glad to see that All Might is making sure that Deku is being properly taken care of. Â Boy needs to eat if heâs going to save the world. Â Iâm also glad that Deku can still show signs of happiness despite, well, everything. Â I swear, if All Might doesnât legally adopt Deku as his son by the time this series is over, Iâm going to jump into this manga and force him to sign those documents myself.Â
The next panel shows Deku standing on what looks like Tokyoâs famous Sky Tree (or Sky Egg if weâre going off what Vigilantes showed us). Â Heâs back to talking to the OFA Holders like theyâre angels on his shoulders. Â Banjo talks about how itâs like the worldâs reverted back in time when things were worse and Deku responds that if he doesnât use all of OFAâs power, heâll never be able to defeat Shigaraki and AFO. Â I know weâre in the final act, so Dekuâs gotta get to 100% fast if he wants to win this war. Â Last we checked, he was at 45%, but he might be at a higher percentage now since heâs unlocked Enâs Smokescreen. Â Also, Dekuâs looking more and more like Batman each chapter and I gotta say that it really suits him.
Back to the Vestige Dream back when Deku was still in a coma after the war. Â The 1st Holder begs the 2nd and 3rd to corporate with him so that they can provide their power to Deku. Â The 1st calls the 2nd and 3rd âMy Heroesâ which causes some awkward silence lol. Â Neither one is responding, so Banjo breaks the silence by suggesting that Deku learn everyoneâs Quirks so that heâll get used to them once he starts using them. Â We learn why the 2nd and 3rd are the 1stâs heroes soon, but itâs actually a good idea for Deku to learn about all these different Quirks while heâs sleeping so that heâll get a good idea on how to execute them when he wakes up. Â Itâs kind of a way of training for Deku just without actually using the Quirks themselves. Â
The 3rd Holder (the one with the spiky ponytail and headband) starts to talk. Â He says that the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd came from the âHarshest era of historyâ. Â It was a time where AFO ruled all and peaked in power and control. Â He was going to take over the whole world if the first 3 Holders didnât step in to stop him. Â My guess is that after AFO was defeated for the first time, society started to calm down and become more or less the world we knew before the War Arc. Â So, things werenât as bad during the 4th Holderâs era and so forth. Â This would explain why Shinomori was able to hide in the forest for so long without being detected. Â
And now the big part of the chapter: the 2nd Holder.  Who does in fact look A LOT like Bakugo.  Big difference is that he has a massive scar across his face.  I am aware of the whole âtime travelâ theory that people have going on with Bakugo and this dude, but Iâm not on that train.  Instead, I think that the 2nd Holder is one of Bakugoâs ancestors.  Like, a really, really-great-grandfather.  Horikoshi doesnât just design his characters for no reason.  The fact that the 2nd user looks so much like Bakugo, has a costume similar to Bakugoâs, and that future panels in this chapter straight up parallel that iconic scene with young Bakugo and Deku in the river only add fuel to this fire.  Unless Horikoshi says otherwise, this is the theory Iâm sticking to: this âAncestorâ theory.
And we know of the 1st userâs real name now too, which is Yoichi!  If Horikoshi is keeping up with the ânumbers in namesâ theme, then Iâm positive that Yochi has the kanji for âOneâ somewhere in it.  And, if weâre going to believe AFO at all, then that means that the 1st userâs full name is Yoichi Shigaraki.  We donât know AFOâs full name yet.  But, again, AFO could be lying with his last name, so Iâm taking this one with a grain of salt.
Back to the 2nd Holder, he tells Yoichi that a lot of lives were sacrificed in order to stop AFO back then. Â He believes that there is only victory or defeat in battle; that thereâs no hope of saving their archenemy. Â He has doubt about putting his faith in Deku because of this. Â Given how the 3rd Holder still has his back turned too, Iâm lead to believe that he also thinks Deku is crazy for wanting to save Shigaraki. Â I donât exactly blame them. Â Really, none of us know if Deku will be successful in saving Shigaraki. Â He might have to kill him in the end. Â I think they should offer Deku help, but I donât blame them for being at least a little skeptical. Â
But, Yoichi reminds the 2nd and 3rd users that they saved Yoichi back when AFO locked him up to die. Â They found Yoichi with the intention to kill him it seems, but the 2nd Holder showed sympathy for Yoichi and lent him a helping hand despite Yoichi being AFOâs little brother. Â This is the parallel panel I was talking about. Â Yoichi is kneeling down on the floor and the 2nd user is standing up extending his hand to help Yoichi. Â I donât even need to look back in the manga to know what inspired this. Â Hell, I donât even need to tell you! Â We all know what Horikoshi was doing when he drew and wrote this.
Yoichi convinces him that he should believe in Deku as Yoichi does think Deku will save the day. Â If the 2nd user didnât extend his hand to help Yoichi, OFA wouldnât have begun. Â I think that the trust between these two is ultimately the reason why the 2nd user finally agreed to help Deku; the same with the 3rd user too. Â And, kind of a tangent, but I really like how Horikoshi draws Yoichi and the 2nd userâs hands as theyâre reaching for each other. Â Horikoshi has always been really good with drawing hands like theyâre facial expressions (something my ass could never do đ) and this one shows kindness and empathy. Â Itâs almost like what wouldâve happened if Bakugo accepted Dekuâs hand for help when they were young instead of letting his pride and ego get in the way. Â Oh, the parallels!Â
Finally, the 2nd user speaks in present day telling Deku that theyâre going full speed ahead now.  My guess is that Dekuâs going to have to improve on OFA and the rest of his Quirks quickly in order to find and beat the LoV.  We are in the Final Act after all.  The chapter ends at a good place if we want to switch to the UA kids, which is honestly what Iâm hoping for.  Again, I love Deku and his Vigilante adventures, but I miss the rest of the kids.  The new BNHA Exhibition in Japan apparently has a giant drawing of the main class, All Might, Aizawa, and Shinso in his new hero costume!  Which tells me that 1. Shinso probably took Dekuâs place in the class for the time being, and 2. Weâre definitely going to see the other kids again.  Iâm hoping soon.  But, I wouldnât be surprised if Horikoshi decided to continue focusing on Dekuâs Vigilanteism and have him practice with he 2nd and 3rd Holderâs Quirks now that theyâre working with him.  Weâll just have to see.
So, thatâs it!  Solid chapter overall.  Iâm glad we finally got to see the 3rd and 2nd Holderâs faces.  I think the âKirishima is the 3rd Holderâ theroy has been debunked at this point, but Iâm still on the â2nd Holder is Bakugoâs ancestorâ train.  The similarities and parallels are too strong for me to deny it.  Horikoshi-sensei, please confirm or deny soon đ.  We are getting break next week for Golden Week BTW! All of Shonen Jump is actually, so no One Piece or JJK either (Iâm not sure about Jump+, so we might still be getting some Spy X Family for example).  So, basically all our favorite mangakas are getting a well-deserved break as they should!  I hope they enjoy their vacation!  Waitingâs going to suck tho, Iâm ngl about that...  Oh well, Iâm willing to take the sacrifice if it means having healthy mangka.  Thankfully, we still have the anime and the new exhibition to tide us over until then.
Edit: OR NOT SINCE THE EXHIBITION IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED BECAUSE OF A CERTAIN PANDEMIC GOING NUTS IN JAPAN AFTER ONLY BEING OPEN FOR 2 DAYS đÂ
Edit: I went back to re-read the chapter and I completely missed the date for the next chapter (chapter 311) which is set to release on May 9th! So, weâre actually getting a 2 week break instead.  Damn...  Sucks for us, but itâs good for mangaka to get breaks when they can especially considering their absolutely insane schedule.

I was gonna put the Spy Kids quote here but then Iâd probably get an ask if they or Sharkboy & Lavagirl are pulp heroes.Â
Okay, jokes aside I canât put it into words just how much I appreciate the feedback and reception I get from you guys, never in a million years did I think I would ever get the notes I get or the amount of asks I receive. I canât believe Iâm nearing 200 followers as is, thatâs insane to me. I am eternally grateful that this place lets me finally put out my essays somewhere people will read them and that you guys actually humor my ramblings, and frankly I donât think Iâm ever going to find an outlet like this elsewhere. Please donât hesitate to send questions.
But Iâm gonna have to start rapid firing a couple of those 50 questions so they donât pile up more, and for these âIs X a Pulp Heroâ, Iâm gonna start off by pointing that I made a chart specifically to address this question, to try and at least give the cat I let out of the bag a structure to work with so it doesnât destroy the furniture (not that it ever stopped my cat). Although again, the chart is just a basic attempt to put this on working order, sometimes it really is just a particular vibe that a character or property gives off.Â
Anyhow, on a case by case basis:
Santa Claus: Not a pulp hero, waaay older than those, but has appeared in pulp stories (I mean, itâs Santa). There have been pulp stories that featured Santa, thereâs a murderous Santa Claus in the canadian pulp Guy Vercheres, the Jimmieboy short stories had him meet Santa, and The Shadowâs killed at least one criminal dressed like Santa as well as posed for a holiday picture with the real one in Edd Cartierâs final drawing before he passed away, which is as official as a crossover could possibly get.
Samurai Jack: Maybe. The most directly pulp thing Genndy Tartakosvkyâs done yet is Primal, that is just 100% cartoon pulp, the Conan/Lost World stuff bleeds through the screen. Samurai Jack is kinda near that ballpark but thatâs because Samurai Jack has a zillion influences and pop culture references, most of it seems taken straight from comics. Pulp stuff is in there but thatâs because pulps run in the blood of everything, and it doesnât make everything pulp. The whole premise of Samurai Jack is designed for the contrast between an old-fashioned samurai coming to face and adapting to whatever wacky future nonsense and pop culture archetypes Akuâs throwing at him that week because thatâs what they felt like doing for the episode. Thereâs gangsters and Lupin and Star Wars and historical fantasy and robot violence and...shit, it really is pulp, come to think of it. Still not gonna say a definitive Yes to Jack being a Pulp Hero but the vibe is definitely there and maybe thatâs all that really counts.
The Belmonts: Maybe. Thereâs definitely Simon, because Simon is Conan. Julius Belmont also gives off a strong old-school adventurer vibe. The others are a lot more distant but they are definitely a lot closer to that ballpark than most videogame heroes, characters like Richter and Alucard wouldnât look that out of place fighting monsters next to The Spider or Elric. Again, thereâs not many actual connections to pulp properties or periods, but the whole point of Castlevania is that you get to cartwheel through graveyards and whip your way through exploding skeletons and Frankensteins so you can give Dracula a wedgie. So Iâm gonna actually say a Yes to this one.Â
Scrooge McDuck: Yes. Heâs in the chart already, and really I probably could have placed him in the True Neutral section considering Scrooge was created in the 1900s-1950s time period and was pretty explicitly modeled after a pulp magazine kind of adventurer.Â
The Joestars: No. I donât consider Joseph a Pulp Hero in the first place, itâs really more Battle Tendency having an Indiana Jones globetrotting vibe than Joseph himself, I put the characters in the Radical Pulp Anarchy section as extreme examples to show how far you can conceivably stretch the term based on superficial connections. But I donât get neither much of a pulp vibe from any of the Jojo parts besides Part 2, and pulp material has never been within Arakiâs influences, and I obsessively catalogued all of them in my Jojo phase. You could maybe make an argument for Jonathan since heâs the old-school adventurer of the bunch, and maybe Jotaro since heâs both the wandering warrior type as well as Clint Eastwood in a school uniform, but at this point you gotta separate whatâs âgenreâ and whatâs âpulpâ, and they can intersect without being the same thing.Â
Fast and the Furious: No. Pretty hard no, actually. I donât think thereâs even much of an argument there other than I guess they both have a reputation for being trashy low-class entertainment, but that kinda goes for way too many things to ever be placed under an umbrella term. The terms âhigh classâ and âlow classâ donât even really see much usage anymore in media discussion, they died and itâs a good thing we killed them.
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Stratemeyer Syndicate was pretty specifically centered around hardback publications of juvenile adventure series, which means they could not be considered pulp characters in their time despite being from the 1930s, and in fact were pretty specifically defined as being the opposite of the pulp publishers of the period. Still, that distinction hardly matters much once people started talking about serial and radio and comic characters as pulp heroes, and currently a lot of what it takes for a character to be considered a pulp hero is just being from any kind of 1930s fiction. I wouldnât include them in any listings but, you do you.
Tarantinoâs Pulp Fiction: I mean, itâs kinda the big thing you get when you even look up the terms âpulpâ or âpulp fictionâ, by sheer osmosis itâs replaced the things those terms were created to define in pop culture popularity. Itâs been forever since I watched it and I donât particularly have any interest in watching any Tarantino movie, but I guess the fact that this is a movie with several different stories interconnected on crime drama and doomed love affairs and philosophical hogwash and bantering men of action is very much structured like a typical pulp magazine, which usually consisted on an anthology format that I suspect is what the movie may have been homaging. Either that, or itâs just named Pulp Fiction because itâs sleazy and gorey and shamelessly excessive and those are terms that are very much associated with the pulps, for better or worse.Â

An Enchanted Evening(Wintershock)
âI hear Pepper and Tony are throwing another Disney bash. You excited?â
Darcy looked up from her laptop as Clint stuck his head in her office to deliver the news. It never failed, if something interesting was happening, heâd be stopping by to discuss it. He was worse than her great aunts when it came to gossip, Darcy thought fondly.
âYeah, but Iâll have to find a date. I donât wanna be Giselle without a Robert, unless I can get Jane to go with me. She loves going as the evil queen.â
Clint looked confused.
âI thought you and Barnes were an item. I see you together all the time, looking all cozy.â
âAppearances can be deceiving, Clint,â Darcy sighed. âHe doesnât seem to want anything more than friendship right now. But he is pretty great at the whole friend thing.â
âIf he did want more, would you go out with him?â Clint pressed, watching her searchingly.
âTotally,â Darcy admitted, knowing better than to lie to him. âBut donât you dare interfere and ruin this for me. I donât want to push him away after how long it took me to get him to warm up to me.â
Bucky had been very skittish when heâd first arrived and Darcy tried the technique sheâd used when befriending neighborhood feral cats: kept her distance while offering friendly greetings and looking as non-threatening as possible, left plentiful treats around, and cracked ridiculous jokes in his hearing in hopes of earning a smile. It had taken several months, but Darcy succeeded in Operation Befriend Bucky.
âWho are you and Laura going to go as?â Darcy inquired, trying to change the subject.
Clint grinned. âOutlawQueen, of course,â he supplied.
âOooh. Going with the Once Upon A Time ship. Itâs perfect,â Darcy admired. âCanât wait to see it. Now if youâll excuse me, Iâve got a lot of work to do if Iâm going to be able to afford the dress Iâve got my eye on.â
âJust so long as you show up,â Clint relented. âSee ya, Doc.â
With a wink, Hawkeye made himself scarce and Darcy returned to her work, trying not to picture Bucky dressed as a Disney prince.
Bucky had just finished an intense workout and was trash talking Steve in a way only a best friend could get away with when his long suffering friend decided to turn the tables on him.
âSo I hear youâre the only one who hasnât RSVPâd for the big disney ball,â Steve commented. âThought you would be going with Darcy.â
âHow many times do I have to tell you weâre just friends?â Bucky sighed.
Steve gave him a look of utter disbelief and sighed.
âStill in denial. But you do know you can accompany her as a friend, right?â
âAnd have to hear you lot gossiping even more? No thanks,â Bucky muttered, even as he really wished he had the guts to ask Darcy. Despite what heâd told Steve, Bucky was very interested in the new astrophysicist in a definite more-than-friends way, but so far, he hadnât seen any signs that she shared this interest, so heâd stayed quiet rather than ruin one of the best friendships heâd made in his post-Hydra life.
Steve just smiled knowingly at him.
âIf you change your mind, Darcy is going as Giselle from Enchanted. Nat told me yesterday. Theyâre going shopping for dresses tomorrow.â
âNever heard of her,â Bucky muttered, splitting off from Steve to take the stairs to his floor. The next evening, a Blu-ray of Enchanted had appeared on his coffee table. Bucky turned up his nose, but Natashaâs commanding note had him sighing and watching the movie anyway.
Despite the typical Disney cheesiness, Bucky found himself enjoying himself and actually laughing a few times at the antics of the ridiculously over the top Prince Edward. Robert seemed a more realistic hero for once and he found himself sympathizing with the man. Bucky was pretty sure there wasnât going to be a happily ever after for himself, either.
After the movie ended, he sat and thought for a while, then called Natasha.
Darcy bought her dress, shoes, and jewelry, happily spending way more than she normally would thanks to her long hours and careful saving up for the day. The wine colored fit-and flare dress looked amazing on her and the skirt swirled in a very satisfying manner when she turned around.
âYouâre going to be turning heads tonight,â Natasha commented as they hauled their purchases home. âEspecially a certain someone.â
She wiggled her eyebrows and Darcy sighed.
âWhatever you say. I have no comment,â she said rather stiffly.
Natasha laughed.
âYou say that now,â she said.
In the end, Darcy went by herself to the ball, having chickened out about asking Bucky, which she was already kicking herself for. Oh, well. At least she looked fabulous in her dress that looked just like the one Amy Adams wore for the dance.
She perked up a bit when she got to the fancy ballroom Tony had rented and met the rest of the Avengers in full costume. Sure enough, Clint and Laura were Robin Hood and Regina and looked amazing. Tony and Pepper were Captain Hook and Emma Swan.
âArenât you a little grey to be Captain Hook?â Darcy teased him. âBut thatâs a nice costume.â
âHookâs a lot older than he looks,â Tony replied, waving his fake hook hand around.
Natasha and Steve were Ariel and Eric, which was an unexpected choice, but Nat looked great in her slinky, iridescent turquoise dress and Steve was a fabulous prince. Sharon and Sam were Rapunzel and Flynn Rider and Wanda was Princess Elsa, complete with a gorgeous icy blue dress and fabulous blonde wig. Thor strode around dressed like Hercules and Darcy hung out with him for a few minutes, exchanging small talk.
âAre you also unaccompanied, Darcy?â Thor asked.
âYeah,â she admitted. âBut Iâm hanging out with friends and feeling fabulous, so Iâll be alright,â she assured him.
She completely forgot what sheâd planned on saying next because Bucky Barnes arrived and was looking so gorgeous, she found she couldnât breathe.
Bucky, feeling stiff and awkward in his fancy costume, was keeping his eyes peeled for Darcy, even as he greeted Steve, Nat, and Sam, all of whom seemed very surprised, but pleased to see him.
âSheâs over by Thor,â Nat whispered helpfully and Bucky looked where she indicated and felt his heart skip several beats and his mouth go dry.
Darcy was looking incredibly gorgeous in a dress like the one from the movie, which was a simple design, but very flattering on her. Sheâd left her dark hair down and had simple silvery earrings that sparkled in the light from the massive overhead chandeliers.
In this moment, Bucky knew he was a goner. These were NOT platonic friendly reactions he was experiencing right now. Not at all. She locked eyes with him and her own widened, and she full on smiled at him, which propelled him towards her, now oblivious to everyone else in the room.
Darcy swallowed nervously as Bucky approached, looking stunning in an embroidered dark blue jacket clearly meant to replicate Robertâs costume from Enchanted. Heâd pulled his hair back into a small ponytail and it only added to the appeal.
âHi,â she said softly, giving him a smile.
âHi,â he answered back, looking at her in a way that made her feel downright giddy.
âWow. Darcy, you look beautiful,â he told her, sincerity oozing from his voice.
âWhy thank you,â she replied, trying to resist the urge to fan herself. âYouâre looking pretty fabulous yourself. Iâd say what a happy coincidence we picked the same movie, but I know our meddling friends better than that.â
Bucky grinned at her.
âYep. And I have to tell them they were right later.â
âRight about what?â Darcy asked, knowing what the answer was but wanting to hear him say it.
âThat Iâve got it bad for you, doll. I didnât think you felt the same way, so Iâve been trying to ignore it, but I donât think thatâs possible anymore.â
The way he was looking at her was giving Darcy tingles all over and she took a step close to him.
âWeâre a couple of fail boats then, because Iâve been feeling the same way, and was also convinced I was stuck in the friend zone,â Darcy admitted. âAll our friends could see it, but we sure were oblivious.â
âWe were. As a trained spy, I should be embarrassed, but Iâm just happy,â Bucky told her. âWanna dance?â
âGladly, handsome,â she told him. âI heard youâre very talented in that department.â
Bucky flushed a bit, but shrugged.
âPeople exaggerate, but I did enjoy it back in the day. Letâs hope Iâm not too rusty.â
If Bucky was rusty, Darcy certainly couldnât tell because she was enjoying herself too much. Sheâd never danced with a guy who could lead as well as he could and it was glorious. Looking into his blue eyes, she couldnât help but flush at the expression in them and wondered if she looked equally smitten.
Bucky was thinking about how perfectly they fit together and how her eyes were downright sparkling. That look she was giving him was downright dangerous and he never wanted this moment to end.
They ended up dancing through three more songs before Darcy pulled him away from the party.
âTired already?â He asked teasingly.
âBucky Barnes, youâd better kiss me right now, or so help me, ThorâŠ..â she threatened playfully, pointing her finger at him. She didnât have to say it twice. Bucky had been wanting to kiss her for a long time and just like with the dancing, proved to be very skilled.
âThat good enough for Ya?â He finally asked.
âItâs a great start,â she whispered as she caught her breath.
Across the room, their friends looked on in amusement and approval.
âNice work,â Steve told his girlfriend, who was looking very pleased with herself. âI thought youâd have to lock them in a closet or something.â
âDonât think that wasnât on the table if they kept being oblivious or Barnes refused to show up tonight,â Natasha admitted. âAnd I used to think YOU were the stubborn one.â
Steve laughed.
âYouâre my favorite Disney prince, Bucky Barnes,â Darcy told him as they swayed together to a slow song.
âJust donât expect me to sing or talk to chipmunks,â he muttered playfully. âGotta draw the line somewhere.â

ArchGil/Arturia and LancerCu/Arturia for the ask please ? đ
I already answered for GilArt but BUCKLE UP FOR SOME CUTURIA YALL time to overanalyze as usual
CĂș Chulainn (Lancer) x Arturia - Ship It
What made you ship it?
What planted the seed in my mind was a particular doujinshi I read eons ago. But the whole reason I ended up shipping this so bad can be found in their fight. And itâs mostly CĂș-centered too.Â
Now letâs remember a few things, by this time Kirei has taken Bazzettâs command spells and Lancerâs now forced to obey the damn priest. And even if he doesnât like it, he has to go with the manâs whims and stagnate as a mere spy.Â
I imagine he still clings to the reason he ever answered the summoning anyway: a valiant fight to the death. (which he never gets. damn Lancer luck)
In clashing with Saber, he thought he could fulfil it. And unlike his previous fight, this time she is the one ramping up the pressure.Â
Look at that smirk as he realizes her strength. That offer of a draw to preserve his chances to fight this worthy opponent for later. The disappointed face when she declines, because now heâs forced to use his NP (cuz he was commanded to do recon). If it succeeds, heâd have lost an opponent too early, and if it fails, which we see later, heâd be forced to retreat.Â
Then he goes out of his way to explain himself before saying: âYouâre more than welcome to follow. But if you do, be prepared to die.â
Tell me that isnât a provocation, I dare you. Iâm betting he would have loved it had she chased him down, because her pursuit would have given him an excuse to ignore Kireiâs command and have the fight of his life.Â
And that, friends, is how I fell into this hell-hole.Â
PUTTING THE REST UNDER A CUT âcause this is VERY long.Â
What are your favorite things about the ship?
UMMM THEYâRE SO CUTE?!?
THAT HEIGHT DIFFERENCE
THAT SUS LOOK
THIS SCREENSHOT WHICH WAS TOTALLY NOT TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT ON PURPOSE
look at THEMMMMMM
Also Lancer has fun with them this episode. It actually makes me feel a little sad, since he prolly never had dinner or any sort of happy times with his prick of a Master.
EHEM Okay, be serious. Iâm gonna try to break this up into parts.
The Dynamic
Carefree X Serious, ahhhhh classic.
Lancerâs a notorious flirt, he hits on everyone. And thanks to Shirouâs loving description of Arturia being beautiful enough that the clanging of her armor sounds like the gentle ringing of bells we know sheâs canonically beautiful, which also means sheâs an obvious target.Â
But sheâs not an easy target.
Not only is she serious and straightforward, but she also has difficulty detecting emotions. Which means all his flirtations would go over her head. Fine, heâd just move on to a different girl--
Except Arturia also comes with the ability to hand CĂș his own ass in a fight. And smile while doing it. A powerful woman as clever as she is quick (see first fight)Â
Now that is something CĂș canât ignore.Â
But what else?
Their Past
Both characters have tragedy-ridden backstories, and yet they reacted to them differently.Â
Arturia so heavily regretted the way her reign ended that she fought in two HGWs in an attempt to change it. The first to save her country. The second, to make sure someone worthier than her would pull the sword from the stone.Â
CĂș, despite dying so young after a life of hurting those that he cared about one after the other and being forced to break geis that was so important to him appears to not really regret anything. He just wanted a good fight out of the HGW.
She is serious and he is carefree, and being too much of either of those things proves damaging. Think about it. Lancerâs too busy taking things in his stride that he doesnât ever process. Saberâs got such a horrible obsession with blaming herself (until Shirou happened), that she was literally frozen by it.
Being with CĂș would help her loosen up, and by knowing Arturia, CĂș would learn to care just a tad bit more about thingâs heâd dismissed. Finally realize that things...werenât just okay.
Iâm not saying this will go smoothly, but thatâs what makes it so interesting. They can heal. And do it together.
THIS:
Pretty cute tsundere moment but wait, thatâs not all. He means it. CĂș did not have the best experiences with kings, his was a fool.Â
I like to think, that meeting someone like her...would change that. (by the way this is also one of the reasons I ship her and CĂș Alter which u must have noticed if you follow me)
Bottom line, I just think that they could be happy together, you know? I really do. They complement each other in a way thatâs just right.Â
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Criminally underrated. Needs more followers. More content. More everything. I love them.Â
Also works as a threesome with EMIYA
Or Diarmuid
Platonic or romantic this totally works yall
THANK YOU FOR THE ASK

As I'm about 99.9% positive you would agree, I will never understand why people say that Enjolras isn't a good friend or wouldn't be a good boyfriend. Like I get that the revolution and his work was important to him (I personally believe that he would balance his friends and work to the best of his ability), but you cannot tell me that he wouldn't drop everything, including his work, at a moment's notice if a friend needed him. This is something that I believe wholeheartedly, and someone would have to pry this head canon/belief/whatever you want to call it out of my cold dead fingers.
Yes, I of course agree with this 100%. I really don't understand why people would say that either, it is just not him! The thing about Enjolras is that he cares so much, enough to the point where it was what got him killed. Some may argue that he cares more for his cause than for people, and I would say that is because they are viewing the cause and people as two different concepts, when, in reality, they are actually one and the same! Because Enjolras' cause is the people and that includes all peopleâthe common man Feuilly, his (probably previously) wealthy friend Combeferre, and even the man who on several occasions has let him down, disappointed him, and given him all the reason not to trust him, Grantaire. If his cause is the people, how could he ever feel cold towards the people who matter most to him?
I think the idea a vast amount of people have that Enjolras doesn't love comes from the fact that canonically Enjolras does not experience romantic love, and frankly, this sort of thinking is rather dangerous, because it erases the fact that love comes in so many more forms than just romance. Enjolras is filled with an incredible amount of loveâlove for his friends, love for the people around him, and love for the future, and every one of those aspects links back to the love he feels for those who surround him. It is the love for the people he would encounter everyday while walking on the streets, it is the love for the people he would meet when he would go to buy his bread, it is the love for the friends who would look to him as their beloved friend and leaderâit is his love for these people that he launches an entire rebellionâ and subsequently dies for it, too. His ideals are defined by the motto of Franceâliberty, equality, and fraternityâbut these ideals are driven by his greatest ideal of all, the one he hold key above others: love, and he makes his value of the ideal abundantly evident in his speech following the execution of Le Cabuc when he says:
"This is a bad moment to mention the word 'love.' I mention it anyway, and I glorify it. Love, the future belongs to you... In the future there will be no killing, the earth will be radiant, the human race will love." (5.12.8.)
From this, it is quite clear that Enjolras does not just experience love, but feels one of the highest and most greatest forms of it, so the characterization that he knows not of the feeling of love is quite unfounded.
He absolutely does love his friends to death. The one time we see him ready to forsake his ideals is when rather than keep the valuable spy Javert, who holds information about the rebels at the barricades, he is willing to hold an exchange so that they may bring back Jehan Prouvaire.
"'Yes,' replied Enjolras. 'But not as much as by Jean Prouvaire's life.'" (5.14.5)
He also sees so much good in his friends, he believes in them wholeheartedly, and for Enjolras, his belief is his expression of love.
"He composed, in his own mind, with Combeferreâs philosophical and penetrating eloquence, Feuillyâs cosmopolitan enthusiasm, Courfeyracâs dash, Bahorelâs smile, Jean Prouvaireâs melancholy, Jolyâs science, Bossuetâs sarcasms, a sort of electric spark which took fire nearly everywhere at once." (5.1.6.)
I've always loved this passage because it allows us to glimpse into Enjolras' mind and see how he truly thinks of his friends, and the way he sees them is incredibly sweet. He sees these people as his brothers who are capable of amazing feats, who are just as passionate as he is, and will be the ones to help him fight for the future. The love he holds for them is incredible, and though we get to see inside of Enjolras' head so little, this passage here is quite enough to inform the reader of just how much Enjolras draws joy from his friends.
In terms of the canonicity of the brick, I have always seen Enjolras' final moment as him realizing and accepting Grantaire's love for him (I would also argue that this moment is also when Grantaire himself, having not known exactly what it was he felt for Enjolras, also realized what exactly he felt for him), but dying with him only as a friend, but the fact that he smiles, and that it is him who extends his hand towards Grantaire says a lot about how strong his platonic love for his friends is. And of course, once again it is not just for his friends; far too many people see Enjolras as a man willing to sacrifice whoever and whatever in order to accomplish his goals, but his words once he discovers that Paris has abandoned their barricade say otherwise. When the rebels stubbornly insist that they all remain, no doubt fantasizing of dying "heroic martyr deaths," rather than encourage them, he instead essentially chides them by reminding them that:
"Vain-glory is wasteful[,]" (5.1.14)
so to paint him as merciless holds no merit. I feel as if this image comes from the quote:
"Enjolras was a charming young man capable of being terrible." (4.4.1.)
While yes, it is very capable for Enjolras to turn ruthless, the key word in that sentence is capable. The word that preceeds it, the one that follows after the definite word was, is the word charming, and the fact that charming is put before terrible holds great significance. Enjolras' first instinct, what comes to him naturally, is to do good, to be good, to be charming. He can be terrible, yes, but he must put his mind into doing so, whereas being a good person comes to him without thinking. Many tend to ignore the first part of the sentence in favour of the second, and they twist it to mean that his first instinct is to do bad instead of good, which really does not define his character at all.
Perhaps the biggest contributor to the misinterpretation of Enjolras' character is the way people have read his dynamic with Grantaire, and the way the lines between canon and fanon Grantaire have been so thoroughly blurred that it has ended up distorting Enjolras' image while erasing major parts of Grantaire's character that makes him the character and to a greater extent, metaphorical representation he is. I will not lie; I write fanfiction, and the version of Grantaire that I write into my stories is most definitely his fanon image; in other words, he is a vastly improved version. But it is incredibly important to acknowledge the way the two concepts deviate from each other, or you'll end up with a situation in which the character you have in mind isn't really the original character itself. It's okay for people to have different perceptions! Everyone understand literature differently, and that's the beauty of the arts! I think it's totally cool that everyone believes in characters in different ways! But for me, it really bothers me the way the fandom tends to paint Grantaire as a saint while portraying Enjolras as a character who always seems to know less than Grantaire, always is on a lower platform than Grantaire, and is always harsh and unjust towards Grantaire, because it simply is not true. A lot about Grantaire is ignored in terms of the canonicity of the brick. For example, it is true that Grantaire is, in fact, ugly, and he's described that way for a specific element of the narrative that Victor Hugo is writing in (@lilys-hazel-eyes is writing a great analysis on morality represented by beauty, which is exactly the point hereâyou should definitely go check it out!) In the brick, Victor Hugo describes Grantaire's cynicsm to be the "dry-rot of intellect" (4.4.1.) Hugo's stance on nihilism and cynicism is made quite evident in the way he portrays Grantaire, a character meant to represent the physical manifestation of cynicism (some say that he's the physical embodiment of Paris itself and I think that's a really neat reading on that!)
"A rover, a gambler, a libertine, often drunk... Grantaire, with insidious doubt creeping through him, loved to watch faith soar in Enjolras... his soft, yielding, disclocated, sickly, shapeless ideas..." (4.4.1.)
From these descriptions, it is quite clear what sort of opinion Victor Hugo holds of cynics, which is why Grantaire's characterization is so deliberate. He is trying to make a commentary here about the harm those who do not hold passion or belief can do, to both themselves and society. It is why Grantaire's redeeming moment is the one in which he finally comes to accept the hope of the revolution and proves through action his belief in Enjolras.
In terms of what is presented in the brick, Grantaire does not exactly have much to really defend him. Often drunk, he expends his energy into drunk rambles rather than meaningful meeting contributions, (though admittedly, he does say some rather valid and eloquent things within his ramblesâthe quote "Take away 'Cotton is King,' what remains of America?" [4.4.4] comes to mind) he deliberately pokes and bothers people as seen when he calls Enjolras "heartless," (5.1.6) and when given a task, does not hold up his end of the deal and ger it done despite having asked for it in the first place. Enjolras' doubt in him is actually entirely understandable; after all, what has Grantaire really done to prove himself trustworthy and reliable? When Enjolras asks if "[he is] good for anything" (5.1.6) the question is, likely in his eyes, genuine rather than insulting. And even when he has every reason not to, Enjolras still puts his faith into Grantaire to get something of extreme importance done for him, which I do think says a lot about Enjolras' willingness to believe in the best in people.
Victor Hugo ends the chapter right before we can see Enjolras' reaction to Grantaire's failure, and while this part, I will say, is up for interpretation, personally I have always extrapolated that the most emotion this would draw from him is disappointmentâthough it is disappointment that he definitely thinks he should have seen coming, rather than imagining him as getting insanely mad at Grantaire.
Their next interaction is during the rebellion itself, during which Enjolras is put under quite a bit of stress and Grantaire's behaviour really is not helping matters, so him snapping is actually very believable, if a little harsh.
The Enjolras seen in fanon, derived from these interactions, always seems so harsh, so rash when he speaks to Grantaire and therefore is characterized as rash and reckless in general, and generally seems to not understand emotion very well, which is very unlike him. Rather than harsh, I would say that with the exception of course of the rebellion at the barricade and the lead up to that time, Enjolras actually seems to be quite calm.
"All held their peace, and Enjolras bowed his head." (4.4.5.)
Rather than instantly explode at Marius for his rather awful beliefs of Napoleon, instead, Enjolras keeps calm and silent, which demonstrates what an incredible depth of patience he has. And as for Enjolras not understanding emotion, when it comes to fanworks, I'm generally tolerant of people holding different perceptions for different characters, but of all perceptions, this one is one I cannot begin to comprehend, and this is one that I will say that to say he knows not of emotion is to have wrongly read his character.
"And a tear trickled slowly down Enjolras' marble cheek." (5.1.8.)
I simply cannot allow myself to believe that the man who cried at the prospect of having to shoot the artillerman, who calls him his "brother," who is no doubt thinking that had circumstances been different, the action he would be taking would not be necessaryâI do not believe this is a man who would not understand feelings and emotions.
The Grantaire in the book who has "the dry rot of intellect," (4.4.1) only ever makes unnecessary rants during meetings, and is very much untrustworthy, is a far outcry from the Grantaire who bases his cyncism on being what he would say is being "well informed," often makes valid points in meetings, and proves himself reliable. Similarly, the Enjolras that is thoughful, as he proves himself to be in his "Outlook from the Top of the Barricade" speech, still chooses to believe in the best in others despite being given every reason not to, and is actually quite patient, is very different from his rash and reckless, short tempered, seems-to-hate-Grantaire, fanon counterpart.
Of course, if you take characters who are shaped by their surroundings and circumstances in the nineteenth century and adapt them to fit the scene of the twenty-first century, it's obvious things are going to change! However, I think it's important to keep these key traits in mind when doing so, and more often than not, it is these key traits that end up getting mangled. When one sticks to these traits, it's easy to say Enjolras would be a wondeful friend/boyfriend (if you see him as having one.) Enjolras' whole deal is loving and caring immensely, and to put his absolute one hundred percent effort into everything he does, and that includes into his friendships and relationships.
Once again, I'm not bashing on the fandom here, I'm part of it. I'll repeat again, I too write with the fanon image of Grantaire in my head. Everyone takes away different things from literature, and that's fine! This is simply how I have interpreted it.
One more note on Enjolras.
Les Amis de l'ABC absolutely love Enjolras. The way Enjolras' character has been misinterpreted has ended up having an effect on the way the Amis are looked at as well. The Amis are all so passionate about the revolution, they attend meetings because they truly do believe in the change they can create in their world, so I'll never truly understand the characterization of the Amis as laughing at Enjolras' devotion to the cause, or finding his passion for it stupid or bothersome. Victor Hugo himself describes just how passionate of a group they are:
"All these young men who differed so greatly, and who, on the whole can only be discussed seriously, held the same religion: Progress... The most giddy of them became solemn when they pronounced that date: '89... the pure blood of principle ran in their veins. They attached themselves, without immediate shades, to incorruptible right and absolute duty." (4.4.1.)
Everyone here, with the exception of Grantaire, is here because they believe wholeheartedly in the revolution. This is not something Enjolras forced upon them, this is not something they groan when thinking about, it is something they all believe in so passionately. It is not something they make fun of him for.
"Affiliated and initiated, they sketched out the ideal underground." (4.4.1.)
They are all here by choice, by will, and by the values they hold close to their heart, and so to say Enjolras is someone who constantly whines about his cause and the others think he needs to lighten up is both an insult to him and the rest. Furthermore, the Amis really love Enjolras, and not just as their leader, but as a beloved friend, and as strongly as I believe Enjolras would drop all of his work to help any of the Amis when they are in need, I believe the Amis would do the same for him. The unity of Les Amis de l'ABC says a lot about the kind of charismatic leader Enjolras is, and his friends most definitely adore him.
So yeah, anon, I 100% agree, and rest assured, if they try and take this canon fact away, they'll have to pry it from both our sets of our cold dead fingers.

Firekeeperâs Daughter Book Review
Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that all of my in-depth reviews contain spoilers.Â
Firekeeperâs Daughter Book Review by Angeline BoulleyÂ
Well, this book review came quicker than I thought it would (which after weeks since my last published review for an actual novel that may sound absurd, but I promise it isnât).Â
Thereâs a lot of great things about this book and a lot of really important representation, but I also found it to be an incredible slog to trudge through.Â
Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley is the story of a girl by the name of Daunis Fontaine who finds herself stuck between two worlds: her Fontaine side, also known as her zhaaganaash or white side, and her Native side, or known as her Anishinaabe side, or even more specifically, Ojibwe side.Â
The debut novel from Boulley mainly describes Daunisâ struggle between these two worlds, the important people in them, and the war within herself to follow her heart, her gut, and her mind.Â
In the background of this identity struggle, or perhaps largely influenced by it, Daunis finds herself inexplicably tangled up in a secret federal investigation into a specific type of meth being produced in Michiganâs Upper Peninsula that affects people not only in her community, but other Native communities as well.Â
Suddenly finding herself becoming a spy, Daunis starts to learn and keep secrets, those in regards to the investigation as well as those regarding her feelings for fellow investigator-Jamie Johnson-an undercover narcotics cop posing as the cute new highschooler in town.Â
As Daunis deals with her own internal struggles, her community, her relationships, and her burgeoning romance, her past, future, and present all collide and come to a head in this new novel.Â
Now. Reading this summary, you might be thinking: this book sounds awesome! Love? Undercover cops? Drugs? Mystery? It has everything.Â
And youâd be right.Â
When I first read the jacket cover for this novel I knew it was a book I was inevitably going to read. Everything from the gorgeous cover art, to the intriguing summary, to the representation of Native Americans, I was completely drawn in.Â
Too bad I didnât like it very much.Â
I will start off by saying that I think this book is incredible in its realistic depiction of the Ojibwe experience and I know how important it is to increase representation of all kinds of people and backgrounds in literature, especially YA literature.Â
Boulley did an absolutely stunning job of relaying the nitty-gritty of the Ojibwe community-the elders, the geography, the food, the stigma, the finances, the politics, the reputation, the racism, the prejudice, the community, the love, the healing, and so much more.Â
I always am in awe when authors utilize the golden rule of write what you know. Per the back jacket of the novel, Boulley herself states that she is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and an active storyteller of the Ojibwe community.Â
This is beyond incredible. Having an accurate and active portrayal of people writing and drawing from their own experiences are powerful and significant. I could taste, feel, and see how clear and how real Boulley made the novel.Â
I questioned a lot of things during this read, but the Ojibwe community in Michiganâs Upper Peninsula was not one of them. From vocabulary to the extreme details depicting Sugar Island to the care and craft when talking about specific ceremonies like funerals, Boulley did an outstanding job of bringing in what she knows from her own experience and that of her community in order to breathe life into these pages.Â
This was by far the best part of the novel for me.Â
On the back jacket, Boulley also states that she was a former Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education. While I did not know this until a few minutes ago when I sat down to write this review, I am in no way surprised.Â
The book was extremely intelligent. I could viscerally tell that Boulley knows her stuff and does her research. Everything from biology and chemistry processes and vocabulary, to mushroom identification, to legal matters like having an underage informant, politics regarding becoming a member of the Ojibwe Tribe, and due process of the law regarding FBI cases was very clear cut, very detailed, and obviously very accurate.Â
I appreciated how much time and effort was put into this, even if I did find a lot of it bone dry and dull, I still could appreciate the time, effort, and knowledge to make sure that everything in the novel was precise and correct.Â
That being said, it also made the book come across almost like an informational pamphlet at times, or like I was reading non-fiction. I understand being accurate, and I applaud her for that, but I donât need or want five pages of in-book description of how one of these processes work. Just give me the bare-bones outline and I will go from there and look it up more if I so desire.Â
This brings me to my first critique of this book and a large reason it was so tedious to get through: it was mind-numbingly long.Â
Now. I just read a 2,000 page fanfiction not that long ago. That is long, you could argue, and you would be right. But, none of All of the Young Dudes was a bore to get through (sad, sure, but not boring), whereas whole sections of Firekeeperâs Daughter were too dragged out and too explicitly explained that I inevitably got bored and nodded off.Â
The pace was too slow and too bogged down with unimportant details, like Daunisâ daily visits to the elders or her overthinking every single thing, or her making lists of all the things she doesnât know (these are long lists).Â
She often spends whole pages grieving about her Uncle David as well as her best friend Lily, and while understandable and realistic in real life, it was not fun nor productive to read about over and over and over again.Â
Take for example, the very beginning of the book. It takes over 100 pages for Daunis to realize the new-boy-next-door isnât who he says he is and that heâs actually an undercover cop here to investigate a new strain of meth and asks for her help.Â
Over 100 pages of set up.Â
It was so goddamn boring.Â
It got better once she became involved with the investigation, but then so did the whining, the overthinking, and the reflecting. The first 100 pages could have been condensed to 20. No joke, I would have gotten the same exposition out of that I did.Â
In addition, despite things taking so long or not serving a purpose, I was often confused about what was happening, which is an overall unpleasant experience. Boulley simultaneously describes everything and yet nothing at the same time.
The reason for this discrepancy is because she often used native language to describe feelings, events, people, etc and while some of the words I learned over time, often the words left me confused or bewildered.Â
I appreciate the use of native language, but it also left me with big gaps while reading or made me struggle to put pieces together as they were happening.Â
The pace of the novel overall was incredibly bad. Things either took 12 years or two minutes. The actual plot to show up? 12 Years. Daunis and Jamie to fall in love classic YA style? Two minutes. Daunis to find Uncle Davidâs notebook? 12 years. The final confrontation of the bad guys? Two minutes.Â
With any event, it either felt sluggish or way too quick and mashing these two together in one novel was disorienting and frustrating, not to mention it made me not want to read.Â
Additionally, while I generally thought the plot was very interesting, who doesnât like undercover cop stories? I thought all of the characters were very forgettable or downright shells.Â
Daunis was...a textbook female character in my eyes. The way she spouted off knowledge like the periodic table to fall asleep or reciting the scientific method wasnât cool or new, it was irritating.
To me she wasnât real.Â
She was someoneâs idea of a female character who seemed cool, but wasnât. Nothing about Daunis made me think of her as a great character. If anything, she just seemed like an empty vessel I was reading the book through, like the book was happening to me instead (cough cough Mary Sue).Â
Some of you may be upset with this statement, and thatâs fine, but other than her love of science, her knowledge of geography, and her ties to the community, nothing about Daunis was a real person.Â
She hardly had friends, I donât recall learning anything she liked or disliked (other than Jamie, hockey, and running) , and she was entirely surmised of the people who had left her and the identity struggle she had been born with. I donât mean to undermine people who struggle with their identity, I know thatâs important, but there is more to people than just that.Â
None of the other characters are frankly worth mentioning.Â
You might ask, what about Jamie? The shadowy, scarred love interest?
*Shrugs*
Heâs fine. Genuinely thatâs all I can say about him. We donât even learn his real name as Jamie Johnson is a fake. All I know is that heâs got curly hair, a scar, and doesnât know who he is. Itâs hard to like a character when the character themselves have no idea of who they are.Â
The other characters either die or are in the background to progress the plot along.Â
To be fair, itâs a good plot. Itâs intriguing, itâs mysterious, and I learned more than I ever thought I would about meth and mushrooms, but it doesnât make up for the dead-end characters or the pacing issues.Â
I didnât hate it, but I also didnât like it. I guess I can say that I feel indifferent about this book, although the representation of Native Americans bumps it up slightly for me from being dead average.Â
The storytelling isnât spectacular, even if the idea is promising, but if you have been searching for representation like this in YA I can see how this book would be much more impactful and important and Iâm happy to have it as a part of the YA collective.Â
Recommendation: At the end of the day, this novel is a true smorgasbord. I love the representation, the draws from Boulleyâs real life, and the intelligence, but I didnât see any of the characters as real people, the pacing issues made it hard to gain and keep interest going, and the dialogue often came across to me as someone's warped version of what teenagerâs sound like.Â
Score: 6/10
