Hello! I was wondering if you had any Gentlebeard fanfic you would recommend on ao3? Ideally a nice slow-burn with a few chapters but honestly anything you like would be great - just on the search for more fics to digest. Thank you!

I'd recommend everything by @xoxoemynn and @darcylindbergh if you're looking for some very soft and in character, kinda awkward but also canon compliant, ed and stede ❤️ they've both got a ton of shorter works too. My favourite ofmd fics are:

five fic friday!

I have returned from the official Sad Week with new recommendations!

In Favor with Their Stars (M, 15K WIP) by @mxmollusca - I'm OBSESSED with this space AU. Basically: what if 2001 were a love story???? Ed is woken from cryostatis in order to fix the damaged spaceship he's traveling to Europa in. Stede (aka Synthetic Transport Entity/Deep Europa) is the ship's AI. A story about the nature of personhood and what it means to love. The writing is [clenches fist] gorgeous, and the characters are written with such tenderness and nuance.

If You Don't Love Me Now (T, 9K) by @chocolatepot - A solid entry in the post-S1 genre; I like the POV switching in this one a lot. Also I would protect this Ed with my life, and the way that Stede articulates his feelings is fantastic. (I just read this one this morning!)

Happily Ever After (M, 27K) by @codswalloping - post-reunion, Stede gets amnesia after a concussion, probably, and thinks it's right after Alma was born. Shenanigans ensue, mostly of the variety of everyone being a dumbass. (I am particularly amused by Izzy's role in this: he is a canon-appropriate asshole. It ends up being good for the plot, somehow.) The whole thing is sweet and funny. [edit: added tumblr username after seeing a reblog!]

here i go again (T, 23K) - I had kind of been avoiding this one? The whole Mamma Mia AU thing seemed like a weird concept; curiously, I've never seen the movie, but I know the jist of it. But finally I read it, and I'm glad. It's charming and thoughtful, and I like Ed's POV a lot.

Self-Indulgence (E, 10K) by @ofmd-alsaurus - I guess I'm just throwing in one smutty thing a week now? This is an author who mostly writes deeply weird (and funny!) PWP, so it was interesting to see an actual reunion fic, but in the same tone and voice. It's yearning and insightful at the same time as being very funny and awkwardly horny.

Update from a previous recommendation: Disruptors finished this week on a lovely happy ending.

YES. That's it, that's the essence of what's so beautiful and kind about OFMD and its fandom, the universe of things it can contain. I love hearing what it is about this show that makes someone feel seen, because the feeling seems universal, but the reason it feels that way is so varied and personal.

For me it's love as being fundamentally a perfect fucking friendship.

Sometimes friendship is used as a term that diminishes or contradicts romance--"they were just friends"--queer love in particular, of course, is so often dismissed as "just friendship."

But isn't it crazy, to frame friendship and love in opposition, when friendship is what it's all about? I fucking LOVE Stede and Ed's friendship. Those are the things that makes me say I know that story:

how it feels to meet someone and feel like you've been waiting for them all along

how it feels to crave them all day and night and realize your sexuality is this maniac, right here

the way even painful or boring work becomes fun and worthwhile, so long as you get to be with them

I could go on for ages - I want to sing it from the rooftops, sometimes.

And that's why my favorite line of the whole show is "Want to do something weird?" because YES, yes yes yes, that's it, that's true love! A friend who smiles and says yes to doing weird shit with you!

So many gorgeous works of fan fic and art capture that sentiment beautifully, but I particularly recommend the works of afterism (@onlylostphysics) and alsaurus (@ofmd-alsaurus) who are both writing earth-shatteringly sexy, funny, getting-weird-with-your-best-friend erotica of EXQUISITE caliber - because what's more gorgeous than the sex you can have with your best friend who always wants to do something weird with you??

alsaurus' s2 fic

Kitty and the Captain this is the only one that I wrote and posted before s2 was complete: between episodes 5 and 6, in fact! so we've got all the sweet horny insanity of Ed in a cat collar and Stede practicing his captain voice from episode 5, plus the idea of Stede not knowing what a handy is from episode 4, and zero idea of the angst to come lmaoooo. it's cute, it's sweet, it's hot, it's on brand.

Ed and Stede's Very Successful Second Time a true comedy, and a visceral reaction to the season 2 finale (and to people's reactions to the finale). I admit that it's a bit of a prank, a bit of me blowing raspberries at all the Izzy wank in fandom... this is reflected in the hits to kudos ratio lmao. I know exactly where people hit that back button. but plenty of others kept reading, and maybe had some feelings they didn't expect to have. plus it's what I wanted to write, and I do truly write these for myself (as much as I love pleasing you all).

Truly Docked yeah... as soon as I heard that "well and truly docked" comment in episode 7 I knew I would have to write this lol. the docking itself is a pretty small part of it because as always, the Ed and Stede in my head just kept talking and it became a whole other thing. I also love this because it's a slightly different take on the post-s2 "innkeepers era"... iykyk 😂

Or: With DADT gone, John starts kissing guys. Rodney is (very mysteriously!) not having a great time.

➞ the idea of Rodney being so out of touch with his own emotions that he thinks he’s homophobic rather than into John is just…chefs kiss.
