#alpha Sephiroth

I've never been able to get over stories where the abused becomes the villain. True of any media that has this trope, really, but especially true of Sephiroth. He makes my heart hurt.

Created to be nothing but a weapon, abused and manipulated and experimented on from childhood. Sent to go fight Shinra's wars for them, desensitized to killing from a young age, but still managing to hold onto his kindness somehow. They made him into a legend larger than life for their propaganda, while simultaneously de-humanizing him in the worst ways, isolating Seph to the point where no one around him, not even his closest companions, even realized that he needed support. There's hints that no one around him really knew his background by the things they say - the only one who was aware of the extent of his mistreatment was his abuser. He was a high functioning individual - who would be arrogant enough to assume that The General could need help? Who would dare?

And I don't blame Angeal or Genesis or Zack for not realizing. Along with them simply not knowing there was an issue that needed addressing, Sephiroth probably kept it from them on purpose - whether by choice or necessity or outside influence or self preservation.

Sephiroth just wanted a normal life too. He didn't like having his picture taken, but endured because he had to, and because other people wanted it of him. He didn't really care to compete for the title of hero with Genesis, even though Genesis didn't seem to believe it. He took care of his troops, and we see in that one cut scene where he failed to save a soldier, that he still got upset over stuff like that. All those years of killing and losing his men to Shinra's missions and he hasn't truly become numb to it.

And then nearing the end, after first being told he's a monster by one of his former friends, and then later spending a week in that library not eating or drinking or sleeping, left alone to his devices because who would assume that the most competent general of their time can be in a vulnerable state, and shouldn't be left alone right now?

After learning the "truth" about his origins, and after a lifetime of systematic abuse, no longer believing he's even human anymore. And then the only person offering him a hand in his darkest moments is the one he shouldn't have taken. But at that point - could you blame him? Whether or not the post nibelheim Sephiroth is truly him or just a puppet for Jenova I'm uncertain about, but the end result is that from start to finish - Sephiroth never manages to break free from the whims of those who wanted to use him.

And because he gave into his worse demons - he won't receive a happy ending. He won't be saved. There's no comfort for him, no opportunity to rest and heal and grow. His childhood wish to live a normal life will never come to pass.

Watching Sephiroth's story unfold is like watching someone drown in front of you while surrounded by a crowd of people. And the one drowning doesn't even scream for help because he's been conditioned to believe that the suffocation is normal.

I will NEVER get over him. It doesn't excuse what he did after Nibelheim, I'm aware of that, but I can't help but remember that people only ever had praise for him while he was burning villages down in Wutai on Shinra's behalf.

It doesn't excuse his actions. But I will NEVER be able to forget all the ways the world failed him first.

First Class Trio Omegaverse Headcanons

Sephiroth

Hojo is a creepy MF, so the greasy beta has known Sephiroth’s secondary gender since he was in utero.

Sephiroth is an alpha, and an aggressive one at that.

Seph is aggressive on purpose because Hojo exploited his volatile nature during his ruts for SOLDIER, intentionally forcing him to channel the pent up energy in more reactive ways.

Sephiroth in heat is feral and has a tendency to go at it with anything that moves, regardless of secondary gender.

Hojo wasn’t above supplying poor omegas and betas, only testing them enough to ensure his prized experiment wouldn’t get an STD or anything that’d damage his work

Sephiroth has expressed several times that he isn’t interested in breeding or a more permanent mate.

Angeal

Angeal is mindful and polite. He’s an alpha, but Gillian raised him to be respectful.

Angeal grew up poor so when he was younger, he’d spend his ruts locked in his room, staying far from Genesis since he hadn’t presented yet. 

And if Genesis were another alpha, they could get into a fight, and if he were an Omega, he could hurt him without realizing.

Angeal is respectful and will spend his ruts privately, away from other SOLDIERs and infantry. 

He will decline missions on his ruts to avoid being unnecessarily aggressive and avoid not being in the right headspace while out on the field.

He also treats Zack like his pup and has a lot of influence on how the younger alpha controls himself on his ruts.

Angeal is very proud of his self control on his ruts, but he has a desire for Genesis on his ruts.

Genesis

Genesis expected to be an alpha like Angeal, which didn’t end up happening.

Genesis, as an omega, has taken heat suppressants and scent blockers from the moment it was legal to.

Being from Banora like Angeal, he has more traditional views of the ABO dynamics. Midgar is more contemporary, but Genesis has it engraved into his mind that to be a SOLDIER, he has to pretend to be an alpha or beta.

Genesis still gets his heats, and since he’s on medication, his hormones tend to be pretty messed up.

Genesis’s heat cycles are unpredictable and he hates them with a burning passion.

Genesis’s heat cycles generally comprise of him laying in seclusion with a fever and cramps.

Genesis is a baby. He whines about pain and hates being hot and clammy.

Genesis also isn’t shy to “relieve” himself with toys during his heat, though he’d really prefer a specific alpha.

Genesis craves apples on his heats, though specifically, he craves Banora White Apples��� Angeal’s scent.

Something I like about Sephiroth that I don't see many people talk about is that he is quite soft spoken?

Yes! Sephiroth is VERY soft-spoken. He barely ever raises his voice at all, even when he's angry or surprised. Part of me wonders if this is a conditioned trait since he spent much of his human life being submissive to Shinra. Or maybe it's just how he is. Either way, it's just more proof that the real Sephiroth under the surface is actually very subdued and not the aggressively confident alpha that lots of people claim him to be.

Less Common Genders in ABO (and Final Fantasy VII Examples)

If you’re here for this blog for the omegaverse and not the FFVII side, fear not, they’ll be separated with a series of three flower emojis (*insert here*). This covers my definition of three less common ABO genders, the Enigma, Sigma, and Delta. These I find are more “loose” and versatile, with few sources actually labeling them as the same. So these are my takes and how I define these three in my own omegaverse. The FFVII part is also rather brief.

Enigma

The Enigma is essentially an Alpha (or rarely, an Omega) who has lost their pheromones and scent. In short, they are a “Broken Alpha”. Generally, this is very rare, and most commonly occurs from prolonged suppressant usage. It could also happen from a significant scent gland injury. As such, being an Enigma is often reversible. 

Enigmas still have the instincts of their biological instincts prior to becoming an Enigma. They will still respond to scents, mates, and pheromones, they just lack any of their own. They can also still go through ruts or heats, they just may be more intense, shorter, and become irregular. This can also be a sign that someone has become an Enigma, as mates will likely notice a lack of scent, pheromones, or a change in cycles. Generally, an Enigma will get their scent and pheromones back if the condition is successfully reversed. The condition may also be semi-permanent and the individual may not get back full pheromones or scent they had previously (especially if they were placed on suppressants or blockers way too early).

Sigma

A sigma has alpha or omega biology, but they are completely immune and indifferent to pheromones. They do not have a scent of their own, much like a beta, but unlike a beta, they can’t discern scents at all. Where a beta has a limited ability to smell or can sense alpha/omega emotions if they’re strong enough, sigmas simply cannot. They are unable to secrete pheromones, scent others, or smell scents/pheromones.

They do not experience heats/ruts despite their biology, which often does come at the cost of their fertility. However, due to the lack of heats/ruts, sigmas often don’t have a breeding desire or really want pups of their own. They are socially more solitary and often prefer not to mate or have a harder time mating. Sigmas, despite being rare, do tend to pair together despite their lack of mating interest. Sigmas have a scent glands, they are just non-functional.

Delta

 Deltas are most similar to alphas, but are closer to a “sub-alpha”. They are more dominant and assertive than a beta or omega, but they lack the aggression that typically trademarks a true Alpha. Deltas experience ruts, and can be possessive. Deltas do have a scent and pheromones. They fall between an alpha and a beta on the hierarchy.

Sephiroth

Sephiroth is an alpha that was turned into an enigma by Shinra. His heavy suppressants, lab-formulated so that Hojo could control him, severely effected his development. He was far too young to be legally placed on blockers and suppressants, so his healthy alpha development was damaged and traumatizing as his few and far between ruts were painful and miserable. 

Vincent Valentine

Vincent was a sigma, which made him a very successful Turk as he wasn’t easily sidetracked. He became an enigma after Hojo shot him and he was revived due to Chaos essentially ravaging his system and wrecking his body. Unlike Sephiroth, Vincent is permanently an enigma.

On one hand, I need to calm the fuck down about Sephiroth and stop giving into Twitter to debate lore. I KNOW I’m better than this lmao.

On the other hand, I see people genuinely angry about “how Crisis Core ruined Sephiroth by killing part of his agency through Genesis,” and “how having friends made him less cool,” and “how all the Compilation is humanizing him too much and taking away his mystery,” and “how he went evil for no reason,” and “how he was always an asshole that saw himself as superior to others and only broke down because he found out he wasn’t all that.”

I see unironic worship of “canon” traits he has that apparently mark him as a perverted alpha daddy dom sex god instead of the actual raging, delusional murderer with a loathing for all life he becomes for a reeeeeeeally key and important reason.

I see remarks like “I hate how First Soldier is ruining my favorite character and taking away more of his agency,” when said “favorite character” is Sephiroth’s most surface-level traits as a villain with no further depth and he has to be cool and perfect 100% of the time or else he isn’t Sephiroth anymore and he’s suddenly “badly written.”

That’s not the same character.

Yes, I know.

Why am I mad that one of the most beautifully designed and canonically objectified and powerfully portrayed and sensually voiced and thirstily fawned over characters in video game history is being reduced to singular traits???

I don’t know.

How can I demand the luxury of rage when faced with such odds.

I've been rotating the omegaverse AGSZC pack idea I had recently where Genesis is the Head Omega and Sephiroth the Head Alpha but mated pairs are Genesis-Angeal and Sephiroth-Cloud. Specifically how Genesis and Cloud's relationship would have developed over time and I've decided Genesis' opinion about Cloud basically goes:

When Genesis is first introduced to Cloud and assumes Cloud is going to end up Zack's mate: What an adorable little omega Zack has found, so cute and naive, how fun.

When he realises that Cloud's actually going to end up Sephiroth's mate: That is a Threat to my position and I will get rid of him through whatever means if necessary.

After he actually gets to know Cloud: Unfortunately I like him and understand what Sephiroth sees in him. He can stick around.

Final Evening Thought:

Jenova being defeated because Alpha Sephiroth's instincts overrode her mindfuckery attempts when Omega Cloud had to repair his shitty Shinra issued boots at the Shinra manor and stubbed his little toe, letting out the tiniest, softest, little yelp of pain. Now Sephiroth is focused on his pack (where he belongs, where he's cherished) and his youngest packmate who's hurt (and who isn't afraid to go shoot an alien bitch for trying to use his pack, which he might just do anyways if Sephiroth doesn't stop him).

Sephiroth's eyes snap from thin slits to wide, concerned saucers as Mother's voice dims.

"Cloud?" he croaks, not realizing his throat has dried out. "Cloud, are you well?"

"Seph," gasps Cloud, hopping on one foot. "I'm fine, just (ouch) stubbed my toe in these stupid thin boots. More importantly, are you ok? Zack and I have been trying to get you to talk to us, but it's like you couldn't even hear."

"You did?" Sephiroth asks. "I don't... what... What happened? The last thing I remember is G-Genesi-"

Sephiroth sways where he's standing, and Zack seems to appear out of nowhere to steady him.

"Easy, bud," says Zack. "Easy, come sit down."

"No!" Sephiroth shouts suddenly. "She's here, she will tell me to kill you!"

Zack and Cloud share a sharp glance between each other as Sephiroth begins muttering.

"Mother is here, mother wants their blood, she is in the reactor and demands a sacrifice, she will embrace me at last, mother is here, mother..."

"Stub your toe, quick!" Zack demands, and Cloud complies, yelping just a little. Sephiroth's head snaps up.

"Cloud? What happened?" he says, searching for injuries. Cloud was about to reply when Zack cut in.

"Sephiroth, he keeps injuring his feet, we need to hurry and get away from the reactor to help him. We need to go far and fast; Cloud might be getting mako poisoning. If you let me wield Masamune, you can carry him, ok?"

Sephiroth nods, dazed, and Zack and Cloud exchange glances again. Sephiroth summons his sword, then picks up Cloud.

"Stay with me, Sephiroth, we gotta help Cloud together, ok?" said Zack. "Let's go."

They go. They go fast and they go far, and don't stop until Sephiroth's eyes stop thinning into slits and he stops accidentally bruising Cloud with his tight hold.

Nobody's sure what happened, but they all agree it's not going to happen again, and Sephiroth cries for the first time in ages as he tends to the bruises he caused and mourns the loss of Angeal, Genesis, his mother, and his sanity. Cloud and Zack stay right by his side through it all.

Then Cloud makes a call to his mother, who says "Oh HELL no, ain't no alien bitch taking MY boys!", marches up to the reactor, and firagas the shit out of it before joining them as a fugitive from Shinra.

Genesis stops degrading once Jenova is dead and finds them, apologizing on his hands and knees. His men are with him, restored to health as well, and witness his humiliation.

Then something strange happens; from Genesis' tears springs a little seedling, which grows and grows within seconds, knocking him back then bursting into bloom. From the pollen, a woman appears.

"You have failed, but your mates and your mate's mother have succeeded. I had planned to make you my champion, but there is no need and you are unworthy anyway. I will instead give gifts. To Claudia Strife and Cloud Strife, I give Daniel Strife. To Cloud Strife, Sephiroth, and Zack Fair, I give Angeal Hewley. To Sephiroth, I give Lucrecia Crescent," says the woman.

She disappears in a swirl of blossoms and a resounding CRACK comes from the tree, and suddenly three people appear in its place; a short, wiry man with kind eyes, a giant man with sideburns, and a woman with a yellow ribbon in her hair.
