Hey to all doll makers and customizers (and fiber artists too lol) - our two old alpacas just got sheared for the summer, so I have a bunch of brown fiber and a bunch of white fiber. Unprocessed/raw, with a shorter staple length than most suri (2-4 inches, theyre suri x huacaya crosses so have the silky straight fiber but not as long). I'll let you have as much as you want for the cost of shipping! Just trying to save attic space.
Here are two wigs I've made with them to give you an idea of color.

Alpaca
Animal
Alpacas are raised for their soft and luxurious fleece (fiber). Each shearing produces roughly five to ten pounds of fleece per animal, per year. This fleece, often compared to cashmere, can be turned into a wide array of products from yarn and apparel to tapestries and blankets.
Tumblr media
Alpacas are naturally curious, docile and friendly and when handled correctly they can be very affectionate. They make excellent companions for other animals such as horses, sheep, goats, and even chickens mix well with them!
Llamas and alpacas have been used by humans for transportation and fleece production for a few thousand years. Both species are primarily found in Peru and Bolivia and are part of the camel family, Camelidae.
Alpaca
The alpaca is a species of South American camelid mammal. It is similar to, and often confused with, the llama. However, alpacas are often noticeably smaller than llamas. The two animals are closely related and can successfully crossbreed.
Breeds: Huacaya alpaca
Mass: 48 – 84 kg (Adult)
Gestation period: 11 – 12 months

Fleece de résistance: From the Australian Alpaca National Show! The best Alpacas and Fleece producers in the land came to Bendigo in Victoria for the Australian Alpaca Association National Show. About 300 Suri and Huacaya alpacas and 200 fleeces were on show at the event, along with art, craft and photography. The Association says Australia has one of the World’s Largest Alpaca Breeding Herds and is at the forefront of Fibre Quality. Alpaca Wisdom
The alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is often mistaken for llamas (Lama glama) and is the smallest member of the camel family. Despite their resemblance to llamas, alpacas have distinct characteristics such as smaller muzzles and ears. They are primarily bred for their luxurious, hypoallergenic fleece and can be found across the globe, excluding Antarctica. There are two main alpaca breeds, Huacaya and…

Lol, last reblog is me; I just sent it to the wrong blog.
Just read some articles about the differences between suri alpaca fleece, versus huacaya (the kind I've processed an spun before), and I'm now firmly convinced that's what this is. Thank you @mimsical-on-main!!

Can anyone help me identify this fiber?? I bought a couple pounds or so of it from the local craft supply thrift shop, but nobody there knew what it was more specifically than 'some kind of unwashed unprocessed fleece.'
It is incredibly soft, smooth, and silky. It has very little odor or oil/lanolin in it, and not that much dirt or plant matter either, so I'm processing and spinning it in the grease.
I'm amazed at how little the fleece is tangled or matted, given that the fibers are mind-bogglingly fine, and have a staple length of around 10 inches/25.4 cm. Like, holy shit these are crazy long fibers. By far the longest protein fibers I've ever spun. I'm seriously considering taking a break from spinning until I can make some kind of distaff to make this stuff more manageable.
It honestly feels like spinning flax, but like, if flax grew out of rabbits and felt like the finest softest bunny floof. Combing it is bizarre, because it goes from being locks densely clumped together, to being an open, airy cloud of fibers that seems almost to want to float away (as well as creating a lot of static and trying to cling to everything I'm wearing, but that could be more to do with it being 50 F/10 C in my room).

i bought some flax roving so i can start spinning linen yarn for weaving and practice spinning with flax bc the process is a bit different from wool (you have to wet the fibres a bit either with spit or water as you spin to smooth them down and make them easier to work with) and also practice supported spindle spinning with my russian spindle and god i really love working with longer more wiry fibres like flax and the outer coats on double coated sheep like the icelandic, shetland, and gotland breeds there's something so easy about working with them

"Sorry! I don’t want any adventures, thank you. Not Today. Good morning! But please come to tea – any time you like! Why not tomorrow? Good bye!" Bilbo Baggins J.R.R. Tolkien, An Unexpected Party, The Hobbit Hello and welcome! We are just starting to navigate our way through the morass of social media; please bear with us. This little fellow is Bilbo, a huacaya alpaca born on our ranch in 2019. Due to an illness when he was young (as in this photo), he is still rather small to this day. Maybe his name was prophetic? Get acquainted with some ‘fancy sheep’ at Alpacas of Oregon
Get acquainted with some ‘fancy sheep’ at Alpacas of Oregon
Whenever possible, I seek out encounters with animals, whether it’s trekking with llamas in northern New Mexico, riding a camel in Egypt or lumbering through the jungles of Thailand atop an elephant. I’m fascinated with animal behavior and look for opportunities to observe creatures of all kinds. I’ve been fortunate to have witnessed polar bears in the Arctic, penguins in Antarctica, pink river…
