Serena Williams Shares the Signs of Financial Abuse in New Ad
Allstate Foundation’s new spot is called ‘Signs’ and it was released under the charity’s Purple Purse program. The Purple purse program is a program that seeks to end financial abuse. The spot was created by Leo Burnett. In the spot, we see the tennis champion navigating a maze-like setting riddled with some of the most common signs of financial abuse. In the spot, Serena Williams lists out common signs of financial abuse. The film ends with a plea to the public to recognize the signs of abuse and begin a national conversation that might help the people who are trapped in abusive relationships. https://youtu.be/RTiTQ5Q6ryM
Facts about Financial Abuse
According to The Allstate Foundations and a 2018 national survey carried out by the charity, the following are true about financial abuse: It is often invisible. Some of the signs include extreme restrictions on spending, blocked access to bank accounts, ruined credit and much more. Nearly 50% of Americans are unaware that financial abuse is a form of domestic violence Nearly one-third find the topic of domestic violence taboo, up 10% since 2014.
Serena Williams Speaks on the Campaign
Serena Williams talked about how she has been a longtime champion of standing up for what you believe in. She talked about how proud she is to use her voice for anyone who can't use theirs. She shared that she hopes the spot helps put a spotlight on the hidden signs of financial abuse. Williams also hopes it sparks meaningful conversations with loved ones and creates an understanding that we need to be advocates and allies for those around us. This is not the first time she is working with the charity. In 2018 she was the face of their ‘Invisible Weapon’ campaign. The campaign focused on the controlling tactics frequently used by domestic abusers and the reasons why victims might choose to stay in or return to abusive relationships.
Allstate Foundations Speaks on the Campaign
Ellen Lisak, Allstate Foundation senior program officer spoke about the campaign. She talked about how not all abuse is visible. Lisak stated that unlike the marks and bruises of physical violence, the signs of financial abuse can be difficult to see, even for victims experiencing it. She stated that said with the help of Serena and their advocates across the country, they hope to raise awareness and remove the stigma and begin a much-needed dialogue. Read the full article

Domestic violence is a universal, dangerous, and life-threatening crime that affects all of us, with some groups impacted much more than others. As we face unprecedented times during COVID-19 pandemic with “Stay-at-home” orders, survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse have additional issues to deal with apart from being abused. For most of these survivors, the trauma of the abuse and the additional issues they face with the COVID-19, can make their life more distressing and challenging. We need your help to continue the fight! Nuevo Sendero will support survivors with your generous contribution with grants of $500 to each family to strengthen and empowering us to make rapid responses to a serious crisis. Survivors who are at risk while living with the abuser or because they are struggling to make ends meet. These survivors will be able to use these emergency funds to pay for the daily essentials, which include – groceries, rent, medicine, utilities, etc. In addition, Nuevo Sendero will support these survivors with financial coaching and peer support. Nuevo Sendero will also assist survivors with securing safe, affordable transitional housing a crucial step to a survivor’s long-term security. This fight against domestic violence cannot be fought by one individual, agency or company alone. Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it will take combined community efforts to stop domestic violence. Nuevo Sendero, Inc. is a non-profit organization 501(c) 3, established in Orlando, Florida and has been at the forefront of providing support and services to victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse since 2007. This year, we will be celebrating 13 years of communicating our mission to restore and encourage victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse to become self-sufficient and to proceed towards a healthier future.
