1. All 160 dogs at Florida shelter found homes ahead of Hurricane Milton
â[The shelter] offered crates, food and anything else the dogs would need in exchange for the animals to spend just five days with the foster parents if the human didn't want to keep them for longer. [âŚA]fter about a day of receiving around 100 messages every 30 minutes, Bada said, all 160 were gone from the shelter and in safe and warm homes.â
2. Restoring Ecosystems and Rejuvenating Native Hawaiian Traditions in Maui
â[Volunteers] are restoring water flow to the refuge, removing invasive species, and restoring a loko iĘťa kalo using Ęťike kĹŤpuna, ancestral knowledge. [âŚ] This human-made ecosystem will provide food for community members and habitat for wildlife while protecting coral reefs offshore.â
3. Solar-powered desalination system requires no extra batteries
âIn contrast to other solar-driven desalination designs, the MIT system requires no extra batteries for energy storage, nor a supplemental power supply, such as from the grid. [âŚ] The system harnessed on average over 94 percent of the electrical energy generated from the systemâs solar panels to produce up to 5,000 liters of water per day[âŚ.]â
4. Threatened pink sea fan coral breeds in UK aquarium for first time
âThe spawning is part of University of Exeter Ph.D. student Kaila Wheatley Kornblum's research into the reproduction, larval dispersal and population connectivity of Eunicella verrucosa. [âŚ] Pink sea fans are believed to have been successfully bred by only one other institution, Lisbon Oceanarium, in 2023.â
5. Tiny 'backpacks' are being strapped to baby turtles[âŚ.]
ââWe analysed the data and found that hatchlings show amazingly consistent head-up orientation â despite being in the complete dark, surrounded by sand [⌠and] they move as if they were swimming rather than digging[âŚ. This new observation method is] answering questions about best conservation practices,â says Dor.â
6. New California Law Protects Wildlife Connectivity
âA new state law in California will instruct counties and municipalities to conserve wildlife corridors when planning new development. [âŚ] This could entail everything from creating wildlife crossings at roads or highways, employing wildlife-safe fencing, or not developing on certain land.â
7. âI think, boy, Iâm a part of all thisâ: how local heroes reforested Rioâs green heart
âBy 2019, [the program] had transformed the cityâs landscape, having trained 15,000 local workers like Leleco, who have planted 10m seedlings across [âŚ] roughly 10 times the area of New Yorkâs Central Park. Reforested sites include mangroves and vegetation-covered sandbars called restinga, as well as wooded mountainsides around favelas.â
8. Alabama Town Plans to Drop Criminal Charges Over Unpaid Garbage Bills
ââSuspending garbage pickup, imposing harsh late penalties and prosecuting people who through no fault of their own are unable to pay their garbage and sewage bills does not make payment suddenly forthcoming,â West said. [⌠The city] has agreed to drop pending criminal charges against its residents over unpaid garbage bills.â
9. New Hampshireâs low-income community solar program finally moves forward
âThe state energy department is reviewing seven proposals for community solar arrays that will allocate a portion of their bill credits to low-income households. [âŚ] New Hampshireâs strategy of working with utilities to automatically enroll households that have already been identified streamlines the process.â
10. The Future Looks Bright for Electric School Buses
âEPA has awarded about $3 billion in grants from the infrastructure law, which paid to replace about 8,700 buses. Of those, about 95 percent are electric. [⌠Electric buses are] cheaper to operate and require less maintenance than diesel buses and will soon be at cost parity when looking at the lifetime cost of ownership[âŚ.]â

Yay - I get to share my love for tidbit Hazbin lore while sharing knowledge that makes me look like a millennial boomer XD Ahem... Alastor, our favorite overlord, for all intents and purposes, is a fucking elemental. His abilities are absolutely terrifying from a scientific standpoint. Okay, so remember how during the "Stayed Gone" number, Vox starts glitching out and "loses his signal" - then the Pride ring subsequently has a blackout? That is entirely Alastor's (or whatever-the-fuck-is-benefactoring-him's) doing. A powerful enough radio signal can do that. No horseshoe magnet required. IRL real shiz. Despite being digital enough to render a bluescreen while compromised, Vox might still have older hardware from his former days as a rabbit-eared, extra-thick thick cathode-ray tube.
And Alastor is our radio demon. Keep this in mind. IRL, once upon a time during the 1940s - before digital television - there was no "Channel 1". That's because in the US, a very long time ago, both radio and TV shared the band that we call "Channel One":
"Until 1948, Land Mobile Radio and television broadcasters shared the same frequencies, which caused interference. This shared allocation was eventually found to be unworkable, so the FCC reallocated the Channel 1 frequencies for public safety and land mobile use and assigned TV channels 2â13 exclusively to broadcasters. Aside from the shared frequency issue, this part of the VHF band was (and to some extent still is) prone to higher levels of radio-frequency interference (RFI) than even Channel 2 (System M)." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_1_(North_American_TV))
Then for a short stint, Channel One was exclusively reserved for radio:
Channel 1 was allocated at 44â50 MHz between 1937 and 1940. Visual and aural carrier frequencies within the channel fluctuated with changes in overall TV broadcast standards prior to the establishment of permanent standards by the National Television Systems Committee. In 1940, the FCC reassigned 42â50 MHz to the FM broadcast band. Television's channel 1 frequency range was moved to 50â56 MHz. Experimental television stations in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles were affected. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_1_(North_American_TV))
Every local TV channel and radio station has a frequency range on the electromagnetic spectrum. For those who still listen to radio on non-internet-reliant radios devices, those funny little numbers next to a station's name are a ballpark number for the frequency the station broadcasts in the Hertz unit. A Hertz (Hz) is one wave per second. A KiloHertz (KHz) is 1,000 waves per second. A GigaHertz (GHz) is 1 billion waves per second. Modern AM radio stations are 535-1605 kHz Modern FM radio stations are 88-108 MHz  TV VHF Channels 2 thru 13 are 54-216 MHz TV UHF Channels 14 thru 36 are 470-608 MHz And no, that's not a discrepancy between VHF and FM radio: the frequencies designated for FM radio are nestled right in there with TV ones - between Channels 6 and 7.
(chart from http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Audio/radio.html) Even today, radio and TV are slightly shuffled in there in regards to designated frequencies. This implies that depending on Alastor's band of preference, if Vox still has some of his older hardware, Vox could, in his sleep, theoretically be able to hear Alastor's broadcasts of screaming victims without a physical radio nearby. IRL in fact, in older televisions where a knob is used to change channels, much of the static you'd hear in-between channels is actually background radiation from deep space - along with any radio interference from man-made sources nearby. No wonder Vox is obsessed with Alastor. Alastor can torment him in an in-between realm-channel daily, like Freddy Kruger.
Yet, if radio signals were only a Vox problem, why did nearly every light and electronic device go out in the Pride except the emergency lights at the Heaven embassy?
It might depend on how we define the word "radio". Is it radio, as in "those radio stations we can listen to without the internet"? Maybe radio, as in "any frequency utilized in modern communications, including TV and Radio"? Or is it radio, as in "almost any signal on the electromagnetic spectrum with a frequency lower than friggin' heat?" People, below is an IRL over-simplified chart of the electromagnetic spectrum and its usages by human.
When radio is defined as a specific part of the electromagnetic spectrum, it is basically any frequency below infrared. *** Cellphone service and WiFi use radio signals within this range. Most cellular services are between 600 MHz and 39 GHz WiFi routers are about 2.4-5 GHz (6 GHz in newer models)Â That's where the "G" in "4G" and "5G" come from - the "G" stands for "Gigahertz" Radio, local television, cellphone service, WiFi, and basically any point in the internet that isn't linked by a landline - these are all safely within the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that the scientists would call "radio". If Hell's technology is supposed to mirror the real world, then most electronic devices need radio frequencies in order to communicate. The VVV's empire is truly fucked, should Alastor so choose. The only plot hole in this explanation I see is why all the lights went out. These devices don't run on radio - they communicate using it. My best-educated guess is that the on/off switch for Hell's power grid is on an open network and at least part of it wireless. Or maybe Alastor's radio attack works like a general EMP and he can just break stuff by "brute force". (I am not an expert on these sorts of things like telecommunication... or network security... or physics.... I politely ask that someone in the comments, please enlighten me U.U ) ------------------------------------- Also, notice that Alastor's Tower, Cannibal Town and the Heaven Embassy were the only regions with lights on during the blackout.
is that...?
Cannibal Town?
If this is, in fact, Cannibal Town, then my only guess is that the Cannibals are so hipster, many of them only light their homes and businesses with candlelight and leviathan whale oil. Neither candlelight nor oil-burning rely on wifi. Only some of their region's light was lost in the blackout. They might use some electricity (as many during the Victorian era did, which Cannibal Town seems to be inspired by), but they don't fully rely upon electricity. This suggests that Alastors friendship with Rosie might be less of an organic friendship and more like a strategically slick alliance. Rosie's territory is one part of Pride that Alastor can't completely shut down (other than the Embassy). But, who knows?
Alastor's derision of modern tech now seems to have more merit than just being "hipster", or avoiding leaving a digital footprint that Vox can manipulate, (the latter of which I once head-canoned before this epiphany). Alastor can literally just shut most of Hell's tech down. This might also suggest why Alastor is homies with Zestial - another known old-timey prick.
Alastor makes alliances with demons he can't easily overpower with his abilities. This might seem self-contradictory to Alastor's seeming over-confidence in teasing Lucifer - until you realize he did this only after he learned angels could be killed during the Overlords' meeting. (And yes, I know what I wrote about Alastor a couple of tumbl notes back with the "popsicle" evaluation. I do not consider flip-flopping a moral issue if done so by epiphany. That note stays, because it's funny XD ) ----------------------- Another theory! Ok, so this theory isn't entirely my own-own, I'm just building off of it based on what I've just said (mostly Roo stuff). So IRL, scientists decided to take an image of the observable universe in the microwave range. Microwave energy is in the upper ends of radio, but just below infrared in frequency. What they found was cosmic background radiation - a lot of energy that isn't coming from the stars themselves.
(Image source: https://www.space.com/33892-cosmic-microwave-background.html) Some scientists theorize this is because this particular energy is left over from the formation of the universe. So about Roo:
In the first non-pilot episode, The Story of Hell, as read by Charlie, states that the angels of pure light "worshipped good and shielded all from evil." During this line, imagery of two faces are shown before the angels: one face of light and another face of twisted red and black.
Subsequent lines and imagery in the episode suggest that this "evil" existed before Lucifer fell or Eve allowed this evil to enter the world - even before the Earth was created. Some Tumblrs who have been in this fandom longer than I have may know of Roo, a character that appears in some of VivziePop's older works within the Hazbin/Hellaverse. Some of Roo's monikers include "The Root of All Evil" and the "Tree of Knowledge". I'm wondering if in the Hellaverse, the cosmic background radiation of the universe is a manifestation of Roo when she isn't bound to a tree. Could Alastor's radio powers come Roo, the background "dark" energy of the universe's birth? Did Alastor bite the apple the second third time for mankind? XD
------------------------------------------------- While researching for this paper, I learned that microwave ovens and 2G cell phones operate within the same frequencies at around 2 GHz. Apparently, the only reason cell phones don't cook our brains is because the wattage is too low. (I dunno what wattage means. I'm not a scientist.) But now, Alastors singing lines in S1E8 had me thinking: "The constraints of my deal surely have a back door Once I figure out how to unclip my wings, guess who will be pulling all the strings" Knowing what Alastor is capable of with radio, this has me wondering if Alastor's radio powers are coming from one source, all while be is being chained by another entity entirely. Someone might have gone out of their way to get Alastor into a contract - if only to keep him from literally baking the universe for his viewing pleasure... on a rotating glass plate.
Being able to cook a soul in microwaves would require that they be at least partially made of water, however. Buuuut... I guess if there are working ACs in Hell, I really shouldn't read too much into it XD -------------
Do you think the mad scientists from Helluva Boss, Lyle Lipton and Loopty Goopty, ever chat over coffee about the abilities of the overlords based on casual observation?
One day, Alastor's name comes up... ...and after four minutes of discussing facts over coffee, they're both just like "Nope"?
XD {END} *** Note: Googling "Electromagnetic Spectrum charts" will yield different results. Some charts will have different designations frequencies lower than radio, like Extremely Low Frequencies (ELF). I do not know whether this difference is a reflection of a newer categorization, or if most charts online are made for laymen such as myself. Most charts I saw years ago only designated "radio" as "everything below microwave". I want to assume that the "only radio below microwave" categorization went into the writer's designing of Alastor's character simply because such charts are more common (while also making for a more interesting power scaling).
______________ Disclaimer: I am composed of chauffeur knowledge. I know nearly nothing about communication science little about radiation stuff. I took an astronomy elective in college once, so I sorta knew where to look when it came to frequency stuff. I have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about. I know that I confused frequency and wavelength somewhere. Please, #sciencesideoftumblr feel free to correct me. ----------------- TLDR: Most tech IRL uses radio waves to communicate. That Includes TVs, WiFi and cell phones. Alastor can make the Pride Ring go kaploowee if he looks at it funny. I don't know what he's cooking.

1,000,000 stranded Southwest passengers deserved better from Pete Buttigieg
The catastrophic failure of Southwest Air over Christmas 2022 was the worst single-airline aviation failure in American history, stranding over 1,000,000 passengers. But while it was exceptional, it was also foreseeable: 2022 saw Southwest and the other carriers rack up record numbers of cancellations, leaving crews and fliers stranded.
Itâs not like the carriers canât afford to improve things. After pulling in $54 billion in covid relief, the airlines are swimming in cash, showering executives with record bonuses and paying titanic dividends to shareholders. Southwest has announced a $428m dividend.
This isnât a new problem. Trumpâs Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao was a paragon of inaction and neglect, refusing even to meet with consumer advocacy groups. This is bad, because under US law, state attorneys general are not allowed to punish misbehaving airlinesâââthat power vests solely and entirely with the Secretary of Transport.
Itâs been two years since Biden appointed Pete Buttigieg to be the human raceâs most powerful aviation regulator. Buttigieg started his tenure on a promising note, meeting with the same consumer groups that Chao had snubbed, but after that hopeful beginning, things ground to a halt.
As Corporate Crime Reporter details, William McGee of the American Economic Liberties Project was impressed by the Secretary: âHe was intelligent, articulate, he had good questions for us, he was taking notes, he seemed concerned.â But 18 months later, McGee describes Buttigiegâs leadership as âlax.â
https://www.corporatecrimereporter.com/news/200/pete-buttigieg-and-the-southwest-airlines-meltdown/
Buttigieg likes to tout a single enforcement action as his signature achievement: fining six airlines and ordering them to issue refunds to US passengers. But only one of those airlines was a US carrier: Frontier, which only accounts for 2% of all US flights. The US monopoly carriers have gone unscathed.
The US carriers are in sore need of regulatory discipline. In 2020 alone, United racked up 10,000 consumer complaints, twice as many as any other carrier. Under Buttigieg, the DOT investigated these airlines and closed every one of these complaints without taking any against them.
This is part of a wider pattern. In Buttigiegâs 18 month tenure, not a single airline has been ordered to pay any fines as a result of cancellations. In the absence of oversight and accountability, the airlines have made a habit out of scheduling flights they know they donât have the crew to fly (they used public covid funds to buy out senior crew contracts, retiring much of their workforce).
This gives the airlines the flexibility to offer many flights they know they canât service, and to allocate crew to whichever runs will generate the most profit, stranding US passengers and holding onto their money for months or years before paying refundsâââif they ever do.
Consumer groups werenât alone in sounding the alarm over the deteriorating conditions in the airline sector. In 2022, dozens of state attorneys generalâââDemocrats and Republicansâââsent open letters to Buttigieg begging him to use his broad powers as Secretary of Transport to hold the airlines accountable.
What are those powers? Well, the big one is USC40 Section 41712(a), the âunfair and deceptiveâ authority modeled on Section 5 of the FTC Act. This authority allows the Secretary to act without further Congressional action, to order airlines to end practices that are âunfair and deceptive,â and to extract massive fines from companies that donât comply.
As McGee told CCR, âthe scheduling and canceling of flights is both unfair and deceptive.â In order to force the airlines to end this practice, Buttigieg would have to initiate an investigation into the practice. The American Economic Liberties Project called on Buttigieg to open an investigation months ago. There has not been such an investigation.
Even on refunds, Buttigiegâs much-touted signature achievement, the Secretary has left Americans in the cold. US law requires airlines to give cash refunds to passengers on cancelled flights. But to this day, passengers are sent unfair and deceptive messages by airlines offering them credit for cancellations, and fliers must fight their way through a bureaucratic quagmire to get cash refunds.
McGee and other advocates met with Buttigieg twelve times sking him to address this. When he finally took action, he ignored the domestic airlinesâââwhich racked up 5,700% more complaints in his first year on the job than in the previous yearâââexcept for tiny, largely irrelevant Frontier. If you are an American whose journey on an American airline was cancelled, thereâs a 98% chance that Buttigieg let them off without a single dollar in fines.
McGee isnât an armchair quarterback. He is an industry veteran, an FAA-licensed aircraft dispatcher: âI canceled flights. I rescheduled flights. I diverted flights. I delayed flights. I did that every day.â
Apologists for Buttigieg claim that heâs doing all he can: âPete isnât in charge of airline IT!â But while USC 40 doesnât mention computer systems or staffing levels directly, it doesnât have to: the âunfair and deceptiveâ standard is deliberately broad, to give regulators the powers they need to protect the American people.
In understanding whether the million fliers that Southwest stranded on the way to their Christmas vacations could have expected more from their DOT, itâs worth looking at how other regulators have used similar authority to protect the American people.
Exhibit A here has to be FTC Chair Lina Khan, whose powers under FTCA5 are nearly identical to Buttigiegâs power under 41712(a) (the DOT language was copied nearly verbatim from the FTCA). Two years ago, Khan began an in-depth investigation into the use of nonompete agreements in the US labor market.
https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/events/2020/01/non-competes-workplace-examining-antitrust-consumer-protection-issues
This investigation created an extensive evidentiary record on the ways that workers are harmed by these agreements, and collected empirical observations about whether industries really needed noncompetes to thrive (for example, noncompetes are banned in California, home to the most profitable, most knowledge-intensive businesses in the world, undermining claims that these businesses need noncompetes to survive).
Then, right as Southwest was stranding a million Americans, Khan unveiled a rulemaking to ban noncompetes for every American worker, using her Section 5 powers. Khanâs rule is retroactive, undoing every existing noncompete as well as banning them into the future.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/10/the-courage-to-govern/#whos-in-charge
This is what a fully operational battle-station looks like! Khan and Buttigieg are among the most powerful people who have ever lived, with more and farther-reaching regulatory authority, more power to alter the lives of millions of people, than almost anyone who every drew breath.
And yet, when Secretary Buttigieg jawbones about the airlines, itâs all pleading, not threats. As McGee says, âIf you have a Secretary of Transportation who does not punish the airlines when they act terribly, then we should not be surprised when they continue to behave terribly.â
State AGs from both parties are desperate for Buttigieg to back legislation that would return their right to punish airlines. So far, he has not voiced his support for this regulation. When the Secretary of Transport wonât act, and when he wonât support the right of other officials to act, the American traveler is truly stranded.

The industrialization of the South was not anticipated by the dependency theory of the 1960s and â70s. It held that the capitalist center must block any advanced industrial development in the so-called periphery, so that it remains a supplier of raw materials, tropical agricultural products, and labor-intensive simple industrial production, which is to be exchanged for the advanced industrial products of the center. Few analysts had foreseen the industrialization of the South as driven by trade with and investment by metropolitan capitalism.
However, the Southâs industrialization came to provide a (temporary) solution to capitalismâs economic and political malaise in the 1970s, manifested on one side by a declining rate of profit, the oil crisis, and pressure from the labor movement in the North for ever-higher wages and, on the other, by the national liberation struggles of the South. Yet the Southâs industrialization was not a concession to its demands; quite the contrary. Rather than a step towards a more equal world, it has resulted in a deepening of imperialist relations on a global scale.
...
Neoliberalism has brought about a new global division of labor in which the global South has become âthe workshop of the world.â Global capitalism increasingly polarizes the world into Southern âproduction economiesâ and Northern âconsumption economies.â The main driver behind this process is unquestionably the low wage level in the South. As such, the structure of todayâs global economy has been profoundly shaped by the allocation of labor to industrial sectors according to differential rates of exploitation internationally.
The enticement for big business to outsource production or to invest in Greenfield projects in the South is considerable. The difference in wage levels is not just a factor of one to two, but often one to ten or fifteen. Indeed, in 2010, of the worldâs three-billion-strong workforce, approximately 942 million were classified by the International Labor Organization (ILO) as âworking poorâ (almost one-in-three workers worldwide live on under $2 a day)

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer apologized for a social media video in which she wore a Harris-Walz campaign hat and fed Doritos to a kneeling podcast host in what some critics said made a mockery of a sacred Christian rite.
The Democrat was seen in the clip taking a Doritos chip out of a bag and placing it into the mouth of a kneeling liberal podcaster Liz Plank, before the video panned to the governor wearing a camouflage Harris-Walz hat. While Whitmer said the video was intended to spotlight the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act that allocated nearly $53 billion towards efforts to bring semiconductor supply chains back to the U.S., religious leaders saw it as a spoof of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
MICHIGAN GOV FEEDS KNEELING FEMALE PODCAST HOST DORITOS WHILE WEARING A HARRIS-WALZ HAT
"It is not just distasteful or âstrange;â it is an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious persons and their practices," Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) President and CEO Paul A. Long said in a statement representing the views of Catholic leaders in the state.
The video was made as part of a viral TikTok trend where one person feeds another person, who is acting sexually, with the song "Dilemma" by Nelly and Kelly Rowland playing in the background before the first person stares uncomfortably into the camera.
MICHIGAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONDEMN WHITMER'S DORITOS VIDEO STUNT AS OFFENSIVE
Former Trump advisor Tim Murtaugh, for example, posted, "Letâs be clear whatâs happening in this video. Gov. Whitmer of Michigan is pretending to give communion to an leftist podcaster on her knees, using a Dorito as the Eucharist while wearing a Harris-Walz hat. Do they want ZERO Catholic votes for Harris?"
Following the backlash, Whitmer apologized for the video and emphasized that the video was not meant to mock people of faith.
"Over 25 years in public service, I would never do something to denigrate someone's faith," the governor said in a statement to Fox 2. "Iâve used my platform to stand up for peopleâs right to hold and practice their personal religious beliefs."
"My team has spoken to the Michigan Catholic Conference," she continued. "What was supposed to be a video about the importance of the CHIPS Act to Michigan jobs, has been construed as something it was never intended to be, and I apologize for that." ________________________

Lust by Nature {Part 5}
Masterlist, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
Read on ao3
Pairing: Captain John Price x fem!Reader
MDNI: 18+!
Warnings for this chapter: None
Word Count: ~6.5k
Summary: In Mexico with Los Vaqueros!
A/N: I swear I didn't take a break, I just wrote this a billion times and am struggling to make my writing better without a beta writer. I hope ye enjoy!
The constant drone of the plane's engines became white noise after the first hour. It blended into the sound of your breathing by the 10th. Given four days after the medical ward stint, exhaustion still coats your nerves with a steady hum, rivaling the planeâs engines.
Thankful for your government stipend coming back into play, a private plane across the pond was allocated to the team. Besides this, it meant you got to lie down and sleep during the flight to Mexico.
âSae whit th' heck ur we daein' ower 'ere again?â
Groaning at the man whose lap your head rests on, you slap his knee weakly.
âSoap, be quiet.â
âSorry, bonnie.â
His warm hand that's been petting you throughout the flight cards through your hair. A soft laugh bleeds through his breath. Heâs been careful not to touch your horns after giving him a warning bite to his thigh earlier.
The sergeant had been an angel the past few days, as had Gaz and Ghost. After Deidrick was reported and shipped out in handcuffs, the boys stuck to you like glue in the easy moments. Annoyingly hovering because they had no issue with your protests.
Price and Gaz sit adjacent to you with laptops clicking away. Ghost, sitting opposite of you, spread out like a pampered cat. Something you feel that man deserves to enjoy.
âThaâs the fifth time you're asking, Soap.â Gaz groans out. Making a noise that you can assume is him stretching out, the lower timber of Price echoes him a moment later.
âAlejandroâs men are having a tiff about selection to bring in a hybrid operator.â Price begins. âAnd theyâve got an issue with a renegade group. So, theyâre having us help with their bug problem and show off Saint.â
âShow off that sheâs a little shit most of the time?â Ghosts' deadpan humor never ceases to amaze you. All you manage is a small flip of your middle finger in response, making him laugh again.
âThe fact beingâŚâ Price begins, voice coming closer to where you lie. âShe is an enhancement to our team. Show âem how we work and help âem outta bit.â
You catch the small frown on his lips as your eyes blink open. The ocean in his eyes seems colder, foggy. A shallow wave of concern emits, forcing you to become conscious of how youâre curled into a ball, searching for warmth in the comfort of Soapâs legs. Goosebumps have been in a constant roll on and off during the flight, the chill on your body never ceasing to crest over you.
âHow you feelin?â
âCold, and like I need a B-12 shot with a Red Bull.â Looking much better than days prior, the dark circles under your eyes were still present. Youâd all chalked it up to being subjected to a serious wound, then fighting against restraints whilst wounded, followed immediately by an 18-hour flight.
At least Mexico was going to be warm.
The feeling of a cheap blanket covering you brings some sense of ease as Price gently tucks it around you.
You miss the look Soap gives him when your eyes close.
âWeâll be there soon and can get you an IV if you want.â Is all the Captain offers before he goes back to his seat.
Truthfully it wasnât even something that would help at this point. Youâve been starved of anything intimate for days you donât care to count. As dry as the salt flats, your body groans with each crack of your powers. Stiff, split, and rough on each edge that tries to hold itself together.
In this state, your body let a small remnant of human mechanics take over to get you in good health. Eating food felt good, and drinking electrolytes and vitamins made you perk up. Your demon accepted emotions offered in your presence; love and care.
And usually, you would preen in the presence of these, savoring every moment you could. Yet right now, you hated the taste of it on your tongue.
Every ounce of care you received felt embarrassing. Coddled like something so fragile that canât be protected. It angered you, the sense of superiority you radiated washed out and dragged under sea foam while trying to grasp at the surface. As if the moment you were left with the humans and away from the lab, every force of nature wanted to knock you off the water you walked on.
For now, you were surviving.
Price hadnât said much after the interrupted kiss on the couch, having to scramble while Laswell mandated him on everything to be done.
The kiss was just that. A kiss.
Something passionate in the moment, but you knew it didnât hold even a flicker of a flame. There wasnât time in the dark hours of the night to huddle around the wet wicker that he is. Heâs in charge, and his life is sacrificed to do so.
Sure, it would have been easy enough to come in and check on you while practically being babysat by the others. You listened for his familiar gait to approach your room in the late hours of the night.
But it never came.
With Laswell on base, the lack of interaction between her and Price made you feel like a toy soldier. Forgotten and avoided. Like he was embarrassed after it all. It made the attention from the others feel artificial, pitiful of his absence that was painfully obvious in the way you silently pleaded for him.
You had a bit more pep in your step by the time the plane landed.
Stepping into the Chihuahuan desert greets you with an eye-blinding brightness. The warmth is unrivaled as you open up like a sunflower. Looking around the expansive base, did you become coherent to where you are. Oh. This is familiar. Very familiar.
The mountain range peaks in the background of the small town in contrast to the flat land the base is planted onto. The airstrip has an impressive size, yet your plane is the only one showing activity. Like a barricaded wall, your teammates form a barrier around you while walking forward.
Bienvenido de nuevo, my friends.â The first speaks out. Is that-?
âGood to see you all, again.â The second voice followed immediately after.
No fucking way. Had Price not been blocking your view with his large and toned back, youâd have recognized the voices sooner. You wait, rather forced to, while the men stand in a guarding wall before you.
âÂżDĂłnde estĂĄ tu demonio?â The men shift to disperse and greet each other with handshakes and half-hugs.
âSheâs âere. And donât call her-â Ghost starts, looking over his shoulder to you while Price stays blocking your view.
âÂżY a quiĂŠn llamas demonio?â
Ringing out from behind Price, peaking your head out to make your appearance.
Meeting the gazes of Alejandro and Rodolfo.
âThey call me Saint, now.â Walking forward with an almost shy smile, you take in their reactions; Alejandro looks as dumbfounded as the day he first met you while Rudy almost cycles through the emotions of grief before blatant excitement settles on his face.
âSanta madre de-â Rudy punches Alejandroâs arm as if to make sure they're not in one of your trances. âYou? Itâs you?â
Dropping your bags, you meet him in the middle with a small hop into his arms. Peaking an eye open, you watch Alejandro walk with an almost angry swagger to wrap his arms around your back.
âIs this where you went? After how long- ÂżEstĂĄs bromeando?â He almost shouts against your hair, each of them leaning down to leave a kiss where your horns wonât poke them.
âAre they takinâ the piss?â Gaz whisper-yells behind you, followed by Soap. âDoes she speak Spanish?â
The small reunion disperses after a moment. Turning to face your teammates by the sides of the Mexican operators, a dazzling smile on your lips. Something they hadnât seen before.
âCare to enlighten us how you know each other?â Price's arms crossed, body rocking on his heels. Chin tilted down in almost a parental look while flicking his eyes between the three of you. Your smile falls while taking in his sharpness.
âShe came on a test assignment with us, in the forest. Even let us interview her.â Alejandro claps your back, looking down with an affectionate smile. âWas supposed to be for us, but they felt our men were not ready to handle a mujer malvada like her.â
âSo when she left, we thought that would be the last of her weâd ever see.â Rudy finishes, moving a hand to pet your hair. âMira cĂłmo has crecido, princesa.â The low murmur draws a soft smile as he looks you over, almost too intimate with so many eyes watching.
Price shouldnât feel threatened as threatened as he does.
Getting a move on, youâre led into the base's hallways. Nostalgia rushes over your lungs, almost suffocating from having the tangible feeling. Back when you were less experienced in a trepidatious custody battle.
An empty barracks hallway designated to 141 has three rooms lined up. Soap and Ghost already make their way into one, while Gaz moves to the one next to them. Price watches as you enter yours, staying in the doorway while Rudy enters the room with you.
âAre you not going to sleep with her?â Alejandroâs voice startles the seasoned vet. Watching as Price tries to move away to hide the tips of his ears turning red.
âNo- No. Itâs not like that.â He shakes it off, saying it for the thousandth time. Setting his bag down opposite where Gaz lays. âSheâs her own person. Iâm not using her for my entertainment.â Thereâs so much more he could say to defend himself. Dispel any feelings or even waste a breath trying to justify himself. But he leaves it at that.
He can feel Alejandro watching, hearing the cogs in his brain turning at the lack of an answer. Gaz brushes aside them to join Soap and Ghost.
âSheâs different.â Alejandro starts, checking to see your door closed before he moves closer to Price. âShe needs you to survive, CapitĂĄn. Nothing wrong or in the way of it- Yet youâre not getting your team to its full potential.â
This whole trip should have been a video call. Priceâs clothes drop on the bed with heavy thuds, no soft movements but refrains from snapping at his host. Tension glimmers in the silence. Sounds of their breaths cut at your voice through the wall, almost smothered by the boys on the opposite side.
âWeâve been here less than an hour. How are you already giving me pointers on my team?â Itâs not meant to be as harsh as it sounds. Alejandro can read between the lines from his position.
âSheâs quiet. Sheâs not happy yet, not to what she should be.â His murmur breaks down the grating air between them. âYou need to be careful with how slow your bond is going-â Thereâs that fucking word again. It pisses him off. It pisses him off more so that Alejandro knows your schematics exceptionally well to dish out advice. âBefore something happens to her.â
âAnâ whatâs going to happen?â
The sound of your door opening as you and Rudy enter the hallway pulls Alejandroâs attention for a moment. Arms crossed while leaning against the wall in a relaxed form, his eyes almost appear softer with a quiet plead behind them.
âJust donât let it get to that point, cabrĂłn.â
Whatever means Price and the Colonel had drafted up was to show Los Vaqueros how your integration uplifts the team's mission while coinciding with integrating you into society. It sounds like a reentry program, save for the fact that you werenât a criminal. The obvious added perk that youâve been shaped into a soldier.
Plus you were fucking hot, so the perfect candidate to be a psyop if needed to sway the Mexican forces.
Tensions were underlaid with the menâs belief that having more than human power in an ordinary fight would soon lead to their dismissal. That, and that there was an underlying bias towards hybrids and creatures even stepping into war.
Having met Alejandro and Rudy previously set you at a higher level than respect. They know your capabilities and knew how to promote you.
You can hear the gym filled with deep voices that speak fast and low. Some women linger in their respective groups, but there was less of them compared to the base in England. The sound of the voices diminishes as you and the team step into the room.
Confidence exuded from Price, Gaz, Ghost, and Soap as they entered; Finally being able to parade you around in front of strangers made that feeling of being their pet return. Chin held high, your horns pointed towards the sky with a shine that catches the lights. Tail flickering behind you teased the soldiers with glances. The shape of your wings almost seemed like a shadow on your back, so black that it almost absorbed the light if not for the reflection of the soft scaled texture.
They move and flex in time with your breaths, brushing against Ghost as his hand keeps on your lower back to guide you through the door. Some whispers still stand out for those taking in your appearance, some speaking âDemonioâ if they remember you.
When your red eyes look up and over the crowd, silence takes over.
âBuenos dĂas, gracias por estar presente.â Alejandro breaks the static with an introduction and reasoning for the meeting- mandatory for the entirety of their base to move in on better resources, opportunities, and allocation of funding. âWe welcome our friends back, to bring information on their newest addition.â
His speech moves through the facility definitions on the program; Highlighting the newest strategies for combined arms, and operations other than war, while showcasing how 141 has been integrating you within previously followed operations. A piece of them that solidifies their objective's success.
In the middle of the gym is a kill house. Made of plywood and spray-painted markings to denote entry and exit points, furnished to simulate a residential environment that tests differentiating friendly from hostile. Above is a projector screen, playing feed of the inside walls. Itâs not the largest kill house youâve been in, but tighter situations like this cause more stress and demand quicker reaction times.
In events such as this, where it's kill or be killed, those with a quicker reaction time will always come out on top. When Price steps up to speak, he presents you like a new piece of artillery.
âSaint can empathetically rule out emotions. Being able to sense them without even seeing the person, she can discern the intentions of the individual.â He shifts his weight, looking over the kill house before turning over to you. âThe test will showcase her reaction time, and ability to compensate hostile forces while being mindful of civilians- if any, around her.â
Speaking on the heavy stress of why you were chosen for them, Price continues on while you're led to a small armory table by Rudy. His voice similar to telling a story with a moral at the end; Gloating on your interrogation skills and how you could make the information come out in less than a few minutes.
âHer breed is beautiful. Known for her looks, that's one of her greatest advantages. But-â You can hear him move about, getting comfortable in the crowd. âShe is much more, than just a piece of art.â
Rudyâs hands check your gear, handing you an ISO and two 30-round mags while he leads you to the doorway.
âShow them what youâre made of, princesa. Eres mortal.â His lips meet your ear, giving a soft kiss that makes your smile grow pointed at the edges, giving a dangerous lick to your teeth. Rudy had learned how to rile you up since the first meeting, even in ways that Alejandro couldnât.
You let your letting your lips kiss his cheek while smiling. A silent thank you for something sweet to make you feel just a bit more sinister. His hands give your waist a rough squeeze, your body absorbing his arousal as if sucking down water in an oasis.
Priceâs voice booms a bit louder as the countdown begins overhead and signals Rudy to step back.
Ten. Nine. Eight.
âThe challenge she faces today-â
Seven. Six. Five.
âwill be the lack of human opponents.â
Four. Three. Two.
âBut instead, virtual targets.â
One.
The buzzer rings out and your boot is already kicking in the door before it can finish. Sharpening your senses, to scan the maze-like layout of the house. The sound of your heartbeat pounding in your ears fades in your mind.
As the first apparition appears, your hand moves with lightning speed to draw your weapon. The projected figure seemingly peaks by a bookcase with a weapon trained on you.
âHostile.â Speaking in a growl from the back of your throat, a single burst rings out, hitting the target square in the chest before it fades away. Moving from the living room to the kitchen, four apparitions pop up from unexpected angles, forcing you to adapt and react in real-time. Going in time with how quickly the projections have them raise their weapons, you shoot bursts into their chest before looking at the figure displayed in a crouched position.
The barrel of your gun guides your eyes to focus, noting it's displaying a child crouched on the floor. âCivilian.â By the time you reach the fifth and final room, youâre met with a hostage situation playing on the bedroom wall.
âNo te muevas o dispararĂŠ!â
Stilling, your gun stays trained on the man who holds the woman to his chest with a pistol raised to her head. The actor cries, cheesy enough it almost ruins the atmosphere. Before the animation can play out any further, a burst of fire embeds itself into the wall and they both disappear.
Finding your way back out, you dispose of the gear and fix your hair. Making your way back to the sides of your COâs, the hidden signs of their approval don't dispel how it radiates around them.
But the sting of something sharp catches your heart. Surfing your gaze over your teammates, you catch Priceâs eyes.
A sharp, hard-set stare holds you captive. Anger. You can tell from the sharp feeling in the back of your throat and almost as displeasure as pepper spray makes you recoil.
Did you fuck up?
The screen above draws your attention away. A fleeting excuse to turn away from him.
Your analytical statistics are side by side with the footage, showing near-perfect numbers; Two minutes in and out. Your figure, or lack thereof, looks as if a black haze in the kill house. Static borders the edges of you, leaving your eyes almost pitch black in the light amplification of the video.
âThink you look more of a ghost than Ghost does, lass.â Soapâs hushed laugh comforts you.
Trying to brush off whatever is stuck so far up your Captainâs ass, you stay between Ghost and Soap, hiding from Priceâs aura that sours your confidence.
âVaqueros,â Alejandroâs voice cuts the silence after the video ends. âIt is time for your challenge.â He moves to the middle of his impromptu stage space where a sparring mat lies with a clear circle in the middle.
âWar is changing, and now we have to. Pick a brother to fight and test her. Make it count. ÂżComprendido?â
The resulting answer is louder than you expected for a bunch of men who looked like they may faint at the sight of you.
The man sizes you up. Short wavy hair that looks black. About 6â in height, medium build. Brown eyes. Heâs by far no Gaz or Ghost, a lighter hue that doesnât hold a depth like theirs. Less inviting.
The first lunge is led with his chest, feet following with the weight in his toes. Heavy in his strikes, you give the man credit and think youâd have been at least hit if he wasnât a bit fearful. You can taste it.
Not using an increase of speed, you dance your dodges with him. He presses on, each time more intense as he gets used to your presence, your appearance, and nature. Not like youâd bite his hand off, damn. Having enough, you catch his wrist, using the shock of your touch to the advantage before turning and tossing him over your body and to the ground.
A collective sound of âAyeâ and low whistles ring in the room, taunting and scrutinizing the operator looking up at you.
âOtra vez.â Masculinity in this culture is a serious thing, you learned a great deal from Alejandro and Rudy. Thereâs no smile, no laugh, or taunt, to your demeanor. His glare is vicious, but it means good progress for an actual spar.
Resetting, he wastes no time to tackle you.
You let him, wanting him to have his moment and feel a semblance of training. Your body rolls with his, absorbing his momentum while adjusting your limbs to grapple against his hold. Vaguely, he reminds you of a boar. Head-driven while using his size as intimidation, the testosterone that leaks from him is almost enough to make you cough.
Itâs when you release a hiss of air from taking the knee to the ribs that you decide the showâs over. Elbowing the arm that holds himself up, locking your legs around his hips, you push him onto his back, growling. âEnough.â Your voice has that ethereal chime, sending shivers down the spines of those looking on with an intent to devour.
Focusing on his eyes, the connection forms a bridge. Golden glowing embers that only you can imagine leading your intentions to coat him with a soft push of influence. He stills beneath you. His grip on your thigh which was previously attempting to push you off becomes soft. Almost petting your muscle before he nods.
âSĂ, seĂąorita.â
The men watching start to holler, making enough racket that you have to push your control just a bit harder. Hand trailing over his face before taking his wrists and printing them above your head.
âVery good. Wake up.â As easy as it was to enter his mind, and form around him in a soft embrace, you pull back your influence. The trance leaves him in a breath, becoming aware of the crowd before looking up to find you smiling down on him.
The erection pressing against your ass is immediate. Giving his wrists a small squeeze, you stand from his lap a second later to let your actions speak.
It takes about another ten minutes for the meeting to adjourn. Some of the men had spoken up and even asked questions, and a lesser tension could be felt, compared to the beginning. Theyâd have much more work to do if it was ever to become a safe environment for whatever creature was chosen, but you had hope for Los Vaqueros.
Alejandro and Price agreed on having downtime before meeting for the second reason of the task forceâs visit. With an hour to do nothing, Price decided to walk around on a self-guided tour, wanting to separate himself from the others.
He isnât one to let curiosity get the best of him, but that became a lie when you joined. Tension in his knuckles begs to be cracked by the force of at least hitting something, pent-up frustration storming.
It was the moment between you and Rudy. Heâd seen it.
What seemed like a private moment between you two hadnât been fully concealed at the entrance point of the kill house. While everyone else had watched the feed of internal cameras, heâd been watching you.
Seeing you instantly melt into Rudyâs affection sparked something far too inappropriate for a man his age. Immature for a Captain. The nagging thoughts of hands coating something that belonged to him, made him want to lay his hands on you in any way. Spar marked as training, or grabbing you by the waist and against his chest.
Maybe youâd ask for a transfer. Fuck, maybe youâd be in bed with Rudy and Alejandro at the end of the night.
He doesnât understand how you could chase him like a puppy, just to sniff a new bone and run in the opposite direction. Fleeting and impatient where your attention should be on him. Youâre on his contract. Not theirs. That canât possibly be broken and torn up. Youâre his and his alone.
âIâm a fucking mess.â He admonished. To whom, he wasn't sure.
The hallways of the base were more intimate and narrow than the ones back home, making an eerie quietness come over him. Minimal sounds echoing, letting Priceâs footsteps reverberate quietly on the concrete ground. It's when walking past a small corridor of offices, that the silence breaks.
â-your face, princesa. Youâre tired and cold. No nos mientas.â Alejandroâs voice breaks over the hum of electricity in the halls. Straining to hear the vibrato of the conversation, Price follows the sound coming from an office a few yards away
âTell, him. If he doesnât know, how is he supposed to fix you?â Rudyâs voice consumes the space in a whisper, absorbing sound as he speaks gently. Price leans against an adjacent wall, the blinds on the doorâs window blocking any view of him.
He can see you sitting on the desk with the two men he has loathed far too harshly since the start of the morning, crowding you. You lean into them, the movement of their hands petting you isnât missed by Price.
The unspoken relationship between the three of you is so blatantly contrasted against you and the 141, that he wants to throw himself out of a window. The ignorant belief you wouldnât stray from his heel grating in his mind.
Jealousy makes his lungs stutter at the wave of pressure from the sight. It makes him want to have a team bond that makes holding and sharing you in soft moments. Itâs what heâs beginning to crave as he watches it happen with them.
Maybe if you werenât a self-righteous prick it would be different. He tells himself, seething as he watches on.
âIâll be fine. Just a few more days like this and Iâll be back to normal.â You almost sound defeated with the insistent directing and questioning.
âYou know⌠We could always just-â
Before you can finish the sentence, Rudyâs hand gives a smack to your arm in the form of a reprimand. âNo, cariĂąo.â
Alejandro follows the reprimand, capturing your chin in his hand. âWe respect the Captain. Weâre not going to interfere with what you have together.â
Alright, Price is fractionally less mad at them, his paranoid mind bristling still.
âYeah, right.â An irritated scoff leaves you, shaking your head from his hold. âDoesnât want me. Made it known.â
When you hop off the desk to gather yourself, you miss the look between the Colonel and Sergeant Major.
âPrice is a good man, princesa.â Alejandro starts, and the words stir you enough to let the disbelief on your face show.
âWhy are you-â You cut yourself off, moving to turn on Alejandro. âLook at me. Any man would have fucked me on the first day. You know what's going to happen, if-â
It almost sounds as if youâre going to cry. Has it really been this big of an issue?
âShh, youâre okay. Estas perfectamente bien.â Through the blinds, Price watches as they bring you back into their embraces. âWe believe in you two, just let him come to his senses.â Rudy murmurs against your hair.
âIf he doesnât⌠Please call us, mi amor.â Alejandro finishes.
You donât make it more than five minutes before being grabbed and shoved into an empty conference room.
âWhat the fuck-â A hand covers your mouth as the door locks behind you, flicking on a yellowing overhead light.
âWhat the fuck was that?â Startling at the intensity of his voice, your eyes dart to the ice-blue ones glaring at you, filled with rage.
âThe hell are you talking about?â Your muffled reply makes his hand move from over your mouth and down to your jaw, his body crowding you against the wall.
âDon't you play stupid, girl.â Priceâs voice drops lower than youâve ever heard. Even thicker than when he finishes a cigar. The prickling feeling rolls off of him again, making your throat tighten. Thereâs another feeling to him. A crash of emotion that makes you want to lower your head and dispel any argument between each other. To please him.
Your silence makes him continue. âThat little thing you had with Rodolfo earlier today. That little meeting you just had with them. What the fuck is going on?â
It's suffocating how fast your brain spins to make sense of it all. Trying to remember while the weight of his emotions makes a cyclone crash into you. Itâs not fair that his eyes are boring into you, scanning for a lie.
Oh, Christ. That moment with Rudy. It almost feels shameful to know that he had seen it, and watched the intimacy between someone you trust. But the anger at Price for now approaching you like this, like he cared, outweighs everything.
âThat wasnât anything. It wasnât even a thing.â Hissing back, gaze unmoving from his while puffing yourself up in defense. âIt was a small pick me up.â
Price's expression turns dark. For a moment, all you can hear is the light humming above you.
âI saw it. Plain as day, Saint. The whole team did.â You feel the pressure on your body getting firmer. âDo you know how fucking embarrassing that is? Seeing you act like a little slut for all to see?â
If it wasnât for the anger boiling in your veins, youâd be turned on by how degrading he is.
So, you play his game.
âOh I see.â A silent grin haunts your lips. âYou jealous, Price?â Tilting your head up before he reaffirms his hold on your jaw. âDidnât like how he touched me?â
You can see how close he is to doing something, being on the edge of a tipping point you donât know of. The anger floods into you, making your own emotions match. The previous submission evaporates into a storm of fury, potent enough that your tail twitches aggressively against the wall.
âYouâre really askinâ for it, ainât cha?â He fumes. Breath fanning across your lips, the heat makes you lick your own. The buckle of his belt presses against your stomach, and you wonder if itâll leave a mark with how much he pushes onto you. âSay that again, I dare you."
The heated air between you charges something greater than your dream ever did on him, heavier than any touch youâve felt by his hands. So, you do what he asks.
âAre you jealous, Captain?â
Before you take your next breath, his thumb moves to invade your mouth; Pressing against the backside of your lower teeth, he opens your mouth for you while leaning to speak against your ear.
âYou think I don't know what kind of games youâre playing, right? Thaâ I donât see how youâre acting right now?â The brush of his beard itches your right cheek. And god damn this forsaken man, your panties are already soaked from the feeling.
Your jaw is still trapped in his hold, not allowing you a noise besides the garbled mess of a protest.
âYouâre trying to piss me off right now so I punish you, and give you the satisfaction you want eh?â
Youâd argue that it didnât start that way, but now heâs certainly correct. âKeep acting like a child and youâre gonna be treated like one. Demon brat.â
Had it not been for the use of that insult, you could have forgotten that you were mad in the first place. Saliva pools in your mouth, and you can see his eyes dart down at the stand that drops onto your shirt.
You remind him of your fangs with a curl of your upper lips.
Seemingly reigning himself in, he releases his hold but lets his thumb remain on your bottom lip as you swallow.
âYou want me to behave?â Inhaling shakily, as if high on a stim, your head tilts back to match his glare. âYou gonna keep me on a leash? Make sure Iâm by your side so my tail only wags for you?â
Price raises his eyebrow at that and somehow you feel like youâve just let him win.
"You'd love that, wouldn't you?" His expression transforms into something more dangerous; A small smile curls on the corner of his mouth. "To be my little demon dog, staying by my feet, always ready to obey. Is that what you're after, Saint?"
Your hands move from the wall to instead find the meat of his hips, digging into his jeans with the tips of your nails. Pressing against him to stand on your tip-toes, the pressure of your hips together makes you bite down a groan, feeling a flicker of his arousal inlet to you.
âIâm not your little bitch.â
âYouâre not?â He drawls, looking at you in fake surprise. The hand previously on your shoulder moves to your ass while he presses into you harsher.
"âCause right now, youâre barking an awful lot with thaâ pretty little mouth of yours." He sneers, his hips grinding against yours forcing a gasp from you.
"And I think that pretty mouth of yours could make some different kinds of noises. Hm?"
At that, your head thuds against the wall. Fisting your hands onto his jeans, you donât offer a response.
âTsk. Gone quiet now?â His low laugh saturates your heart, the heat flowing to your core. To your surprise, he encourages your behavior. Lifting you with a hand under your ass with the other on your back, he turns to lay you on the conference table.
His erection grants you friction across your damp panties, good enough to almost sedate you in a drunken haze. When you prominently roll your hips against his straining cock, he groans loud enough to make him turn and bite his shirt.
âMaybe if you used me, I wouldnât have to go bending over for anyone else.â
âYouâre my operator. Your loyalty lies solely with me.â Snarling in a sharp contrast, a choleric look peers into you. âIs that understood?"
The drag of his beard across your cheek comes back, scratching your skin to bring you back from the feeling of his hardened cock rocking against your clit through your clothes. When you can only grunt in response, the hold on your jaw is the only warning before he kisses you.
Tongue diving in to meet your own, he dominates his way in while holding your jaw. Breaths borderline panting, the searing anger turning into a lustful spark, and fuck he tastes so good on your tongue. It almost dulls the meaning behind his words, of his claim and possession that comes to the surface. The feeling of submission comes to you again; Understanding that it's not you empathetically picking up on it, but rather the way your body wants to submit to his domineering energy.
His hand fists into your hair, holding you down as he licks into your mouth. You find your ground in the moment, kissing him back like a cannibal and expecting to see red smeared across each other's lips if he were to pull back.
âShow me youâre mine and Iâll give you what you want.â You can feel him start to leave you, his hold lessening to leave you on the table.
âDonât you fucking dare.â A broken growl rumbles your chest, eyebrows furrowing as your jaw sets. Reaching out a hand to latch onto his belt, frustration glowing in your eyes.
He scoffs. Actually scoffs as he looks down with a twisted smile.
âCareful sweetheart. Donât go ordering me around.â He easily shakes off your hand and greedily lets his eyes take in your body underneath him. It's uncomfortably tense as he grips your hip, moving to get off and away without a second thought.
The feeling of your pants tugging makes him stop.
âYouâve gotta be fucking kidding.â
Looking down, you both find you're stuck together; The button of your pants having looped into his belt buckle. It doesn't make any fucking sense whatsoever, but rather keeping his hips tilted against yours with the pull.
âCould be fucking. But not kidding.â You griped, not offering any assistance. Wanting to keep him there for longer, your hips buck up.
âStop. Moving.â He hisses, adding emphasis as he smacks the top of your thigh. âI'm trying not to bloody rip it.â
âJust take it off.â
The whine comes unabashedly from you, childishly biting your lip as you laugh at him. His fingerwork is clumsy, unable to unhook the button from himself. Huffing, you swat his hands away to take over. âLet me-"
Your fingers fumble between the button seemingly wrapped around his belt buckle, weaving around the metal in a way unknown to either of you. Youâd settle for divine intervention.
âHowâs it so fucking tight-â His hand holds yours while he tries to pull free again, only to feel youâre still stuck.
âYe sly. Old. Dog.â
The speed at which Priceâs head whips back over his shoulder is almost concerning for a man his age. Had you not also immediately looked to see Soap standing at the door, staring with the proudest shit-eating grin, youâd have noticed the vein pumping in Priceâs neck.
âSoap, âave you gone daft? Get. Out.â
You canât even respond as your jaw drops from the surprise. The man wolfishly snapping his eyes to find yours, and holding it with a tick in his jaw. Fuck, even he's aroused with the imagination of finding you and the Captain fucking. Without validating any part of the story, Soap darts away with the door clicking shut, Price aggressively pulls hard enough that youâre freed- clothing unscathed.
âThatâs gonna be spread like wildfire now.â He busies himself with being sure his pants are on correctly and probably hiding any remnants of his hard-on. You let the silence hang while fixing yourself up, wanting to walk out of the room as if you weren't close to being fucked. Trailing your eyes over Price, he doesn't bother looking at you, but the subtle flush on the tips of his ears is there. An expert in hiding his emotions and blending in for whatever the social context calls for.
âDonât act like thatâs not what you want to happen.â Hopping off the table and heading to the door, he crowds you from behind. His warmth makes your hand pause on the door, feeling the draft of his breath skim your shoulder. The hair on the back of your neck stands up, sending an anxious chill down your spine. More and more it feels like you've lost your advantage with him.
âI donât want an endless fling to become your permanence. To sustain you.â His hand wraps around your front, securing a place on your neck.
âI want to drown in you.â

By Benjamin Mateus
The ninth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States is finally receding, with estimated daily new infections based on wastewater data now standing at 669,000 per day, down from the August peaks of over 1.3 million. However, experts predict that the tenth wave will begin in late fall and continue through the winter holidays, as has taken place every year of the pandemic so far.
With one in 70 individuals currently infectious, the risk of coming into contact with someone in a classroom, work, or dining at a local facility with 25 to 50 people is considerable. And despite the relative lull in cases, there is more COVID-19 transmission now than during 56.1 percent of the pandemic. In other words, the âforever COVIDâ policy essentially means that COVID is now everywhere all the time.
Under these conditions, forced upon society by the capitalist ruling class, repeat infections act like a battering ram, taking a growing toll on the foundation of everyoneâs overall wellbeing. There is a growing body of evidence that each hit weakens the organ systems, aging them biologically beyond the personâs stated age until sufficient injury begins to manifest in physically measurable symptoms.
At present, more than one billion cumulative COVID infections have occurred in the US, at a rate of around one per year per person, with somewhere between 3-4 infections on average among the entire population. Estimates place the number of Long COVID cases at over 410 million globally in just the first four years of the pandemic, while excess deaths are nearing 30 million.
Clearly, the pandemic is ongoing and remains a significant health risk for the global population. The criminality of the âforever COVIDâ policy is highlighted by the fact that virtually no funding is allocated to the development of next-generation mucosal vaccines, improved treatments during the acute phase of infection, or any treatments for Long COVID patients. While trillions are squandered on war and bank bailouts for the rich, nothing is provided for critical life-saving research.
Last week, results from the first clinical trial of a mucosal vaccine were released, showing remarkable levels of efficacy after a second dose.
The important study published by Chinese investigators demonstrated that an intranasally administered anti-COVID vaccine can induce robust mucosal immunity against the coronavirus in human subjects (128 healthcare workers). The study found that the vaccine provided substantial immune protection against COVID while demonstrating safety and tolerance.
Esteemed clinical researcher Dr. Eric Topol wrote on Twitter/X, â[two] doses of a COVID nasal vaccine spray led to more than a 50-fold increase in spike specific secretory IgA antibodies against 10 strains of SARS-CoV-2, indicative of potent mucosal immunity.â Furthermore, Topol added, âAt least 86.2 percent of participants who completed two nasal vaccines doses maintained uninfected status, likely without even asymptomatic infection, for at least three months.â
Emergency room physician and indoor air quality proponent, Dr. Kashif Pirzada, replied, âThis could potentially give a real ending to the pandemic. No more waves of illness, no more rushing for tests and antivirals if youâre elderly or vulnerable. Hope this comes out soon!â
However, large Phase 3 clinical trials are costly, requiring multiple participants to obtain statistically relevant information on clinical endpoints, not to speak of the research and development investment to identify a therapeutic that can be tested. Thus, under capitalism, there is virtually no investment in these large-scale trials and nothing is being done beyond offering boosters of the current vaccine, despite their greatly reduced efficacy in preventing transmission.
The mucosal vaccine study was conducted just as Chinese officials acquiesced to the demands of the imperialist powers to abandon their life-saving Zero-COVID public health program, resulting in the infection of virtually the entire population and the deaths of 1-2 million people. What could such a vaccine have meant to these millions that perished needlessly and the millions more globally since then?
This raises the broader question of why the international community, facing a devastating pandemic, could not bring its accumulated scientific bodies to address the need to develop a preventative treatment against COVID?
As a trigger event in world history, the COVID-19 pandemic has only accelerated and exposed the deep-seated contradictions in global capitalism, which demands the accumulation of profits at any costs. The ruling class has nothing but contempt for workers, refusing to invest in any social programs that can improve the lives of masses of people. Short sightedness, corruption, mistrust, and suspicion epitomize their actions, which are rapidly progressing to a world conflagration carrying the danger of nuclear war.
Simply put, the ruling class cares not one iota about mucosal vaccines, just as they harbor resentment against any public health policy that infringes on their ability to conduct business.
Refusing to invest in these life-saving technologies, the capitalist ruling class has condemned humanity to face a lifetime of reinfections with COVID-19. What are the implications of this criminal policy?
Multiple previous studies have highlighted the dangers posed by reinfections with SARS-CoV-2. A recent study uploaded as a pre-print publication on Research Square (under review with the journal Nature Portfolio) by the Patient-Led Collaborative has once again found similar results when attempting to characterize the association between reinfections and the chronic debilitating condition known as Long COVID.
Among 3,382 participants (22 percent never had COVID, 42 percent with one prior infection and 35 percent with two or more infections), the risk of Long COVID was 2.14 times more likely among those with two COVID infections and 3.75 times more likely among those who had three or more COVID Infections compared to just one. Limitations in physical functioning measured in their study included ability to dress, bathe, perform moderate activities like vacuuming and functioning socially. Reinfections led to poorer overall health and worse immune health, including more severe outcomes and longer recovery from other infections.
As the authors wrote:
"Relative to those who did not report infections or experienced COVID-19 once, reinfections were associated with increased likelihood of severe fatigue, post-exertional malaise, decreased physical function, poorer immune health, symptom exacerbation before menstruation, and multiple other Long COVID symptoms. While vaccinations and boosters prior to infection are associated with lower likelihood of Long COVID, reinfections diminish their protective effect. The probability of reporting Long COVID remission is generally low (11.5 percent to 6.5 percent."
Another interesting finding of the study, which underscores the complete abandonment of public health efforts regarding COVID, is that a tiny number of those infected were prescribed antivirals during their acute COVID infections. Those with reinfections were also less likely to test, as the âforever COVIDâ policy has inured people from taking any protective measures to prevent infections.
The current alphabet soup of COVID strains is sees KP.3.1.1 dominate across the US and Europe, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all strains. However, a new variant known as XEC that was first detected in Germany in June has spread to more than 27 countries and accounts for six percent of all recently sequenced SARS-CoV-2 viruses in the US. Virologists expect this strain, derived from JN.1 through a complex recombination event and which has nearly twice the growth advantage, to overtake KP.3.1.1 and be the dominant variant during the winter season.
In a COVID update by TACT [Together Against COVID Transmission], the authors explain the dangers posed by these evolutionary developments of the SARS-CoV-2 viruses, writing:
"These variants can evade much of the immune responses from both vaccines and recent infections. Since they can evade antibodies to earlier variants, then that raises the risk of organ damage, vascular and neurological dysfunction, brain damage, and persistent infections which often leads to Long COVID. The unmitigated spread is raising concerns about their impact in the coming months."
Hospitalization rates for those 65 years and older and children were one of the highest during the summer from COVID and remain on par with the prior yearâs summer/fall wave. The number of people that died from COVID In the week ending August 31, 2024, has climbed to 1,239, four times higher than the lows seen in June. At the present rate, it is expected that at least 60,000 people will officially lose their lives from acute COVID this year, not including deaths incorrectly attributed to another cause or due to the impact on the populationâs health from accumulated infections.
These are not incidental and speculative issues. In a provocative report released by the Swiss Re Group, titled âThe future of excess mortality after COVID-19,â one of the worldâs leading providers of reinsurance and insurance, who specialize in financing the risk of death, they said, â[If] the ongoing impact of the disease is not curtailed, excess mortality rates in the general population may remain up to three percent higher then pre-pandemic levels in the US and 2.5 percent in the UK by 2033.â
They advised their investors:
"Based on current medical trends and expected advancements, we conclude that COVID-19 is still driving excess mortality both directly and indirectly. In the long term, lifestyle factors that contribute to poor metabolic health and lead to obesity and diabetes may become another compounding factor in population excess mortality. Insurers may wish to continue to monitor excess mortality and its underlying drivers in the general population closely, as well as the differences between general and insured populations."

I think the point these people make is that thinking that Harris is better than Trump is an illusion. They're two sides of the same coin, funding cop cities, funding racist anti immigration programs, funding Israel's genocide in Gaza, spreading dangerous islamophobic antisemitic misogynistic etc rhetoric. Trump is just doing it in a vulgar style. Harris has been vice president for a while now and her administration has not undone much of the work of Trump, when it hasnt prolonged or amplified it. So I think lots of people are feeling defeated, disillusioned, and like they are being manipulated when the 'at least she's not Trump' argument is brought forth. If she's not Trump, but signs off on the same policies and budgets, and represses protests the same way, there is no difference on the ground. Also I think more people are becoming radicalized and hope for a global change - third party candidates, the people's revolution, whatever. It's a rejection of the establishment altogether rather than rejecting just one - I understand the frustration but I can't fault people who refuse to participate in a system that they feel is working against them regardless of the outcome.
I take issue with a lot of the framing of this response.
First of all, it's not Harris' administration; it's Biden's. I'm not going to argue she has no agency as a political actor, but the way the system works is that he is the central driver of action and policy. Arguing that she, personally, should have accomplished more is frankly silly, both when 1) they HAVE accomplished quite a lot and 2) where they have struggled to accomplish goals, it is often because of deadlocks in the legislative branch, where Republicans hold a majority in the House and Democrats only the slightest majority in the Senate (and considering one of their number is Joe Manchin, it kind of doesn't count).
To the point that they HAVE accomplished a lot:
Established the Office for Gun Violence Prevention and signed anti-gun violence legislation into law
Passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which has significant climate change and drug price provisions
Approved literal billions in debt relief for people with student debt, with still more to come
Signed an executive order to regulate AI usage and to scrutinize use of AI for potential discriminatory effects
Passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, allocating over $400 billion for infrastructure works
Pushed protections for consumers re: airline travel and its exorbitant fees and delays, via DoT and Pete Buttigieg
Achieved a 3.5% unemployment rate, which is the lowest in 50 years
Harris also has, explicitly, called for a ceasefire in Gaza and in fact had her intended statements about the humanitarian crisis there "watered down" by officials, ostensibly so that she didn't seem to be breaking away from Biden's approach to Israel and the genocide. I am not going to argue that the Biden-Harris administration is perfect, does no wrong, or does not have significant responsibility for dangerous, violent policies and political actions. That's the nature of Western government and it would be deeply offensive to suggest otherwise. But to suggest that they're just Trump but more polite is inaccurate and honestly shows a significant degree of political ignorance. Also very odd to suggest that a Black woman is like, equally as racist as Trump?
Moreover, the head-in-the-sand, I-would-prefer-not-to, "the revolution will come soon so no worries :D" approach is simply not helpful in the day-to-day. So, I, for one, absolutely can fault people who choose not to participate in the actions that will have significant effects on the day-to-day governance of the country in which they live. If the idea is to sit around and complain until all the oligarchs get beheaded, nothing will get done. This is the exact attitude taken during the 2016 election, which actually got Trump elected and resulted in the policies that killed large numbers of people during COVID, exacerbated racist and islamophobic violence, and nearly led to a white supremacist Christian nationalist coup that overthrew the government. If you're fine with that, good for you. I, personally, am not.

The Biden-â Harris Administration Advances Equity and Opportunity for Black Americans
Growing Economic Opportunity for Black Families and Communities Through the Presidentâs legislative victories, including the American Rescue Plan (ARP), the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)âas well as the Presidentâs historic executive orders on racial equityâthe Biden-Harris Administration is ensuring that federal investments through the Presidentâs landmark Investing in America agenda are equitably flowing to communities to address longstanding economic inequities that impact peopleâs economic security, health, and safety. And this vision is already delivering results. The Biden-Harris Administration has:
Powered a historic economic recovery that created 2.6 million jobs for Black workersâand achieved both the lowest Black unemployment rate on record and the lowest gap between Black and White unemployment on record.
Helped Black working families build wealth. Black wealth is up by 60% relative to pre-pandemicâthe largest increase on record.
Cut in half the number of Black children living in poverty in 2021 through ARPâs Child Tax Credit expansion. This expansion provided breathing room to the families of over 9 million Black children.
Began reversing decades of infrastructure disinvestment, including with $4 billion to reconnect communities that were previously cut off from economic opportunities by building needed transportation infrastructure in underserved communities, including Black communities.
Connected an estimated 5.5 million Black households to affordable high-speed internet through the Affordable Connectivity Program, closing the digital divide for millions of Black families.
Helping Black-Owned Businesses Grow and Thrive Since the President entered office, a record 16 million new business applications have been filed, and the share of Black households owning a business has more than doubled. Building on this momentum, the Biden-Harris Administration has:
Achieved the fastest creation rate of Black-owned businesses in more than 30 yearsâand more than doubled the share of Black business owners from 2019 to 2022.
Improved the Small Business Administrationâs (SBA) flagship loan guarantee programs to expand the availability of capital to underserved communities. Since 2020, the number and dollar value of SBA-backed loans to Black-owned businesses have more than doubled.
Launched a whole-of-government effort to expand access to federal contracts for small businesses, awarding a record $69.9 billion to small disadvantaged businesses in 2022.
Through Treasuryâs State Small Business Credit Initiative, invested $10 billion to expand access to capital and invest in early-stage businesses in all 50 statesâincluding $2.5 billion in funding and incentive allocations dedicated to support the provision of capital to underserved businesses with $1 billion of these funds to be awarded to the jurisdictions that are most successful in reaching underserved businesses.
Helped more than 37,000 farmers and ranchers who were in financial distress, including Black farmers and ranchers, stay on their farms and keep farming, thanks to resources provided through IRA. The IRA allocated $3.1 billion for the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide relief for distressed borrowers with at-risk agricultural operations with outstanding direct or guaranteed Farm Service Agency loans. USDA has provided over $2 billion and counting in timely assistance.
Supported small and disadvantaged businesses through CHIPS Act funding by requiring funding applicants to develop a workforce plan to create equitable pathways for economically disadvantaged individuals in their region, as well as a plan to support procurement from small, minority-owned, veteran-owned, and women-owned businesses.
Created the $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund that will invest in clean energy projects in low-income and disadvantaged communities.
Increasing Access to Housing and Rooting Out Discrimination in the Housing Market for Black Communities To increase access to housing and root out discrimination in the housing market, including for Black families and communities, the Biden-Harris Administration has:
Set up the first-ever national infrastructure to stop evictions, scaling up the ARP-funded Emergency Rental Assistance program in over 400 communities across the country, helping 8 million renters and their families stay in their homes. Over 40% of all renters helped are Blackâand this support prevented millions of evictions, with the largest effects seen in majority-Black neighborhoods.
Published a proposed âAffirmatively Furthering Fair Housingâ rule through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which will help overcome patterns of segregation and hold states, localities, and public housing agencies that receive federal funds accountable for ensuring that underserved communities have equitable access to affordable housing opportunities.
Created the Interagency Task Force on Property Appraisal and Valuation Equity, or PAVE, a first-of-its-kind interagency effort to root out bias in the home appraisal process, which is taking sweeping action to advance equity and remove racial and ethnic bias in home valuations, including cracking down on algorithmic bias and empowering consumers to take action against misvaluation.
Taken additional steps through HUD to support wealth-generation activities for prospective and current homeowners by expanding access to credit by incorporating a borrowerâs positive rental payment history into the mortgage underwriting process. HUD estimates this policy change will enable an additional 5,000 borrowers per year to qualify for an FHA-insured loan.
Ensuring Equitable Educational Opportunity for Black Students To expand educational opportunity for the Black community in early childhood and beyond, the Biden-Harris Administration has:
Approved more than $136 billion in student loan debt cancellation for 3.7 million Americans through various actions and launched a new student loan repayment planâthe Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) planâto help many students and families cut in half their total lifetime payments per dollar borrowed.
Championed the largest increase to Pell Grants in the last decadeâa combined increase of $900 to the maximum award over the past two years, affecting the over 60% of Black undergraduates who rely on Pell grants.
Fixed the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, so all qualified borrowers get the debt relief to which they are entitled. More than 790,000 public servants have received more than $56 billion in loan forgiveness since October 2021. Prior to these fixes, only 7,000 people had ever received forgiveness through PSLF.
Delivered a historic investment of over $7 billion to support HBCUs.
Reestablished the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans.
Through ARP, secured $130 billionâthe largest investment in public education in historyâto help students get back to school, recover academically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and address student mental health.
Secured a 30% increase in child care assistance funding last year. Black families comprise 38% of families benefiting from federal child care assistance. Additionally, the President secured an additional $1 billion for Head Start, a program where more than 28% of children and pregnant women who benefit identify as Black.
Improving Health Outcomes for Black Families and Communities To improve health outcomes for the Black community, the Biden-Harris Administration has:
Increased Black enrollment in health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act by 49%âor by around 400,000âfrom 2020 to 2022, helping more Black families gain health insurance than ever before.
Through IRA, locked in lower monthly premiums for health insurance, capped the cost of insulin at $35 per covered insulin product for Medicare beneficiaries, and helped further close the gap in access to medication by improving prescription drug coverage and lowering drug costs in Medicare.Â
Through ARP, expanded postpartum coverage from 60 days to 12 months in 43 states and Washington, D.C., covering 700,000 more women in the year after childbirth. Medicaid covers approximately 65% of births for Black mothers, and this investment is a critical step to address maternal health disparities.
Financed projects that will replace hundreds of thousands of lead pipes, helping protect against lead poisoning that disproportionately affects Black communities.
Provided 264 grants with $1 billion in Bipartisan Safer Communities Act funds to more than 40 states to increase the supply of school-based mental health professionals in communities with high rates of poverty.
Launched An Unprecedented Whole-Of-Government Equity Agenda to Ensure the Promise of America for All Communities, including Black Communities President Biden believes that advancing equity, civil rights, racial justice, and equal opportunity is the responsibility of the whole of our government, which will require sustained leadership and partnership with all communities. To make the promise of America real for every American, including for the Black Community, the President has:
Signed two Executive Orders directing the Federal Government to advance an ambitious whole-of-government equity agenda that matches the scale of the challenges we face as a country and the opportunities we have to build a more perfect union.
Nominated the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court and more Black women to federal circuit courts than every President combined.
Countered hateful attempts to rewrite history including: the signing of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act; establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday; and designating the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument in Mississippi and Illinois. The Department of the Interior has invested more than $295 million in infrastructure funding and historic preservation grants to protect and restore places significant to Black history.
Created the Justice40 Initiative, which is delivering 40% of the overall benefits of certain Federal investments in clean energy, affordable and sustainable housing, clean water, and other programs to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution as part of the most ambitious climate, conservation, and environmental justice agenda in history.
Protecting the Sacred Right to Vote for Black Families and Communities Since their first days in office, President Biden and Vice President Harris have prioritized strengthening our democracy and protecting the sacred right to vote in free, fair, and secure elections. To do so, the President has:
Signed an Executive Order to leverage the resources of the Federal Government to provide nonpartisan information about the election process and increase access to voter registration. Agencies across the Federal Government are taking action to respond to the Presidentâs call for an all-of-government effort to enhance the ability of all eligible Americans to participate in our democracy.
Repeatedly and forcefully called on Congress to pass essential legislation, including the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, including calling for an exception to the filibuster to pass voting rights legislation.
Increased funding for the Department of Justiceâs Civil Rights Division, which has more than doubled the number of voting rights enforcement attorneys. The Justice Department also created the Election Threats Task Force to assess allegations and reports of threats against election workers, and investigate and prosecute these matters where appropriate.
Signed into law the bipartisan Electoral Reform Count Act, which establishes clear guidelines for our system of certifying and counting electoral votes for President and Vice President, to preserve the will of the people and to protect against the type of attempts to overturn our elections that led to the January 6 insurrection.
Addressing the Crisis of Gun Violence in Black Communities Gun violence has become the leading cause of death for all youth and Black men in America, as well as the second leading cause of death for Black women. To address this national crisis, the President has:
Launched the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, and taken more executive action on gun violence than any President in history, including investments in violence reduction strategies that address the root causes of gun violence and address emerging threats like ghost guns. In 2022, the Administrationâs investments in evidence-based, lifesaving programs combined with aggressive action to stop the flow of illegal guns and hold shooters accountable yielded a 12.4% reduction in homicides across the United States.
Signed into the law the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun violence reduction legislation enacted in nearly 30 years, including investments in violence reduction strategies and historic policy changes to enhance background checks for individuals under age 21, narrow the dating partner loophole in the gun background check system, and provide law enforcement with tools to crack down on gun trafficking.
Secured the first-ever dedicated federal funding stream for community violence intervention programs, which have been shown to reduce violence by as much as 60%. These programs are effective because they leverage trusted messengers who work directly with individuals most likely to commit gun violence, intervene in conflicts, and connect people to social, health and wellness, and economic services to reduce the likelihood of violence as an answer to conflict.
Enhancing Public Trust and Strengthening Public Safety for Black Communities Our criminal justice system must protect the public and ensure fair and impartial justice for all. These are mutually reinforcing goals. To enhance equal justice and public safety for all communities, including the Black community, the President has:
Signed a historic Executive Order to put federal policing on the path to becoming the gold standard of effectiveness and accountability by requiring federal law enforcement agencies to ban chokeholds; restrict no-knock warrants; mandate the use of body-worn cameras; implement stronger use-of-force policies; provide de-escalation training; submit use-of-force data; submit officer misconduct records into a new national accountability database; and restrict the sale or transfer of military equipment to local law enforcement agencies, among other things.Â
Taken steps to right the wrongs stemming from our Nationâs failed approach to marijuana by directing the Departments of Health and Human Services and Justice to expeditiously review how marijuana is scheduled under federal law and in October 2022 issued categorical pardons of prior federal and D.C. offenses of simple possession of marijuana and in December 2023 pardoned additional offenses of simple possession and use of marijuana under federal and D.C. law. While white, Black, and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, Black and brown people have been arrested, prosecuted, and convicted at disproportionately higher rates.
Announced over 100 concrete policy actions as part of a White House evidence-informed, multi-year Alternatives, Rehabilitation, and Reentry Strategic Plan to safely reduce unnecessary criminal justice system interactions so police officers can focus on fighting crime; supporting rehabilitation during incarceration; and facilitating successful reentry.

4. rivulet
gives off the vibes as a more stress free slugcat. which means the immune system isn't dampened (stress supresses the immune system because body resources are allocated away from it and to the brain, heart, legs, etc.)

On Iran:
Israelâs attack on Iran.
Small drones were somehow launched from within Iran targeting an airbase in Isfahan. Iran shot them down, reporting no damage caused
Itâs a limited response to Iranâs retaliation which launched drones & missiles at Israel after Israel attacked Iranâs consulate, killing 16. Israel is yet to confirm the attack but it told US last minute of the operation
The attackâs limited nature is Israel balancing US pressure to de-escalate while trying to show regional military dominance, consistent w/ reports that US & Israel agreed on a Rafah invasion in exchange for no Iran escalation. An anonymous Israeli official said it was to signal Israelâs ability to strike inside Iran
Iran is downplaying the incident, likely so they wonât have to respond. An official called it âreckless fireworksâ
Unclear if Israel will attack again; Iran said they donât plan to retaliate. Seems thereâs no Iranian or Israeli desire to escalate, especially w/ mass global calls for de-escalation

$100 dollars. An endangered species only got $100 fucking dollars out of the $1.2 billion dollars allocated towards saving endangered species. Why such a low amount? Why aren't people raising money and storming the streets in anger at such an insulting amount?
Because it's a snail. The Virginia fringed mountain snail, Polygyriscus virginianus, to be exact. And it's considered lucky for getting something
Invertebrates are so low on everyone's list that even an article detailing the absurd inequality in spending goes on to focus on plants only gaining 2% after briefly mentioning insects getting so much less, allocating only 0.5% of the budget. Many inverts like a species of stoneflies (lednian stonefly, Lednia tumana) didn't get any funding at all.
67% of the money goes towards TWO species. Pandas? No way (Those aren't American species anyways guys!!)
If you guessed Salmon and steelhead trout, you win a big seafood dinner! (Or would steak be better?)
I'm not saying that they don't deserve the money. But if that much of the budget needs to go towards two species, that means the budget is way too small. The Biden administration last year put forth millions of dollars to aid the long declining EPA and give it more staff in order to update decades old environmental reviews, as well as allocate more money to species that have been neglected, such as endangered species in Hawaii and desert fish in the southwestern U.S. Which is great, but it's not nearly enough.
Article:
#wrenfea.exe#fun fact reading this article made me late for work this morning#since i got so distracted I forgot I was supposed to be getting ready#like..they literally mentioned insects getting 0.5% and then have 3 paragraphs talking about endangered plants who got 4x that#i was hoping theyd at least have one paragraph talking about insects#invertebrates#endangered species#bugs#bugblr#insects

Every child has a superpower. Yet, those with disabilities often do not have full access to quality education and other services that would enable them to use their superpower to positively and fully contribute to society. A recent workshop on inclusion in early childhood, held as part of the Center for Universal Educationâs symposium on education systems transformation for and through inclusive education, asked whether focusing on the early years of a childâs life might offer a window of opportunity to catch, remedy, and maybe even reverse a childâs development trajectory so all countries can reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It brought together early childhood development (ECD) and inclusion experts and those who wanted to learn more about the topic. Two key messages emerged from participants: every child matters, and early means early. Participants also suggested that the global community needs to develop a global disability-focused ECD strategy and that governments should allocate at least 3% of education budgets for children with disabilities.
Children with disabilities are not a monolith and vary greatly in the challenges they experience and their abilities to fully and positively contribute to society. Some have physical, mental, social, or sensory impairments while others have a combination of multiple challenges. Globally, it is estimated that 15% of the world population, about 1 billion people, live with some type of disability. UNICEF estimates that about 1 in every 10 children has at least one disability, with children from South Asia, East Asia, and West and Central Africa having higher incidences. Moreover, globally, almost 53 million children under the age of 5 have developmental disabilities, and many others live with hidden disabilities that may go unnoticed and, therefore, unrecorded.
The global Convention on the Rights of the Child and the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) articulate the rights and equal treatment of children with disabilities. The CRPD provides a comprehensive international legal framework for the education rights of children with disabilities that has been ratified by 181 countries. These legal frameworks and the SDGs are resolute in leaving no one behind. Despite these legal frameworks, agreements, and aspirations, there are numerous challenges and insufficient investment for disabled children to enjoy full rights to education, health, and well-being. In most countries, children with disabilities face stigma and discrimination from their own governments, communities, and families. Their complex needs are often not included in policy and investment discussions. Investment in this cohort of children is usually not high on the policy or financing agenda, yet we know that increased investment and support for children with disabilities can accelerate countriesâ paths to achieving the SDGs, particularly SDG 4.2. From 2007 to 2016, disability funding declined by 11.4% worldwide, and only 2% of the estimated $79.1 million invested in early childhood development was spent on young children with disabilities. Tim Shriver, Special Olympicsâ Board Chair, maintains that if governments could commit even 3% of their overall education budgets to the inclusion of children with disabilities in existing classrooms, it could impact their abilities to thrive and contribute to our societies.Â
2 key messages
Every child matters
All of society benefits when all children are uplifted. For the early childhood sector, that means developing inclusive classrooms that use a twin-track approach and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Instruction. Using this method, rather than having separate classrooms for children, disability-focused support is provided in classrooms that focus on equity for all, but also provide specific support for those with disabilities. Research indicates that this approach benefits all children; children with disabilities have better developmental outcomes (for example, language, social and academic skills, better behaviors), and typically developing children have increased empathy, tolerance, skills in sign language, and more. Establishing inclusive classrooms also requires investment in upskilling classroom teachers so they can support children of all abilities while working with special education teachers. These interventions cost money, yet exclusion has greater negative costs to society in reduced national GDP and higher spending for remedial programs, to name a few. It is estimated that the annual economic cost to society when a disabled child is not able to attend school or get a job can be highâmore than 1% of GDP in some cases.
Early means early
The first five years of life are crucial periods of brain growth and development where about 90% of new neural connections (about 1 million neural connections per second) are made. After around 30 months of life, the brainâs ability to change in response to experiences requires greater effort than before this period. Since the brain is very malleable during this phase, evidence suggests that early screening, referrals, and intervention can halt, improve, and completely change the course of a childâs developmental trajectory. As children are mostly with parents and caregivers during the earliest months of life, investing in their ability to support their children can be important. Often support for parents and caregivers to aid their children is unavailable in communities or unaffordable. Research comparing urban and rural childrenâs access to early childhood education found that those with access to support before age 5 (mostly in urban areas) had higher academic achievement. For children with autism, research indicates that early intervention can greatly ameliorate symptoms, putting children closer to the development trajectory of those without autism. Â
The way forward
Supporting children with disabilities is complex as their needs span multiple government and sectoral departments, there are finite resources in all government budgets, and underlying societal discrimination, even subtle, remains strong throughout the world. Yet, workshop participants suggested that supporting every child and doing so early provides the best chance for countries to meet the SDGs. Two suggested actions for supporting every child early that emerged from the workshop and recent literature include:
Establish a global, disability-focused ECD strategy: Global goals and road maps such as the SDGs, Nurturing Care Framework (NCF), and others include young children with disabilities yet provide inadequate strategy and concrete actions for how to ensure full rights and support for young children with disabilities. Thus, a strategy resulting from action by multiple sectors that complements the NCF is one agenda for progress.
Allocate at least 3% of education budgets for children with disabilities: Increasing investment will allow more to be done to support children with disabilities. These could focus on:
Supporting inclusive preschool classrooms that implement a twin-track approach and universal design for learning
Upskilling teachers that lead inclusive classrooms
Parental support so they have increased knowledge and skills to support their children
Strengthening early screening and referral systems
Research focused on young children with disabilities
Workshop participants were ready to join hands and tackle this complex challenge and suggested that commitment from stakeholders, including governments, donors, and families will be critical to light a path towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and ensuring a thriving society.Â

Chloe Simon and Gideon Taaffe at MMFA:
In the wake of Hurricane Heleneâs devastation, right-wing media are following Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in baselessly accusing the Federal Emergency Management Agency of taking funds intended for the victims of Helene and instead giving it to migrants. Conservative figures have also alleged that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are âprioritizing the needs of noncitizensâ and now âthey have nothing left for Hurricane Helene victims.â In reality, FEMA provides money to migrants through the Shelter and Services Program, which is not linked to the agencyâs disaster-related âfunding streamsâ but is instead paid for via the Department of Homeland Security.
FEMAâs budget includes billions of dollars for disaster relief and maintains separate funding for migrants with its Shelter and Services Program
At a campaign rally on October 3, Trump alleged that the Biden-Harris administration âstole the FEMA money just like they stole it from a bank so they could give it to their illegal immigrants who they want to have vote for them.â He also accused Harris of spending âall of her FEMA moneyâbillions of dollarsâon housing for illegal migrants.â [The Daily Beast, 10/3/24]
A Homeland Security spokesperson debunked the accusation that FEMA spent its money on migrants, saying, âThese claims are completely false.â They continued, âThe Shelter and Services Program (SSP) is a completely separate, appropriated grant program that was authorized and funded by Congress and is not associated in any way with FEMA's disaster-related authorities or funding streams.â On April 12, DHS released $640 million for the SSP to âhelp offset the costs of providing food, shelter and other supportive services after receiving an influx of migrants.â [Newsweek, 10/3/24; National Association of Counties, 4/18/24]
The Daily Beast noted, âThe funds allocated to handle asylum seekers also constitute approximately 2 percent of FEMAâs annual budget, which is typically measured in the billions.â The agencyâs website also fact-checked this ârumor,â saying: âFEMA has enough money right now for immediate response and recovery needs. If you were affected by Helene, do not hesitate to apply for disaster assistance as there is a variety of help available for different needs.â [The Daily Beast, 10/3/24; FEMA.gov, 10/3/24]
The Republican-led House, which currently controls FEMAâs budget and spending, has recently voted to cut funding from the agency. A week before the hurricane, Politicoâs E&E News noted that âas the House and Senateâs top four leaders met last weekend to negotiate a deal to keep the government funded, they were forced to acquiesce to the demands of Congressâ most conservative fiscal hawks, whose votes were thought to be pivotal for passage. They quietly stripped the CR of almost all supplemental funding, including for FEMA, according to multiple House appropriators.â [The Daily Beast, 10/3/24; E&E News, 9/26/24]
In 2019, Trump used some of FEMAâs budget to respond to migrants at the border. Trump's administration redirected $271 million in disaster relief funding for migrant detention centers and to process asylum claims. [Rolling Stone, 10/3/24]
Right-wing media outlets and commentators are spreading the braindead lie that FEMA is spending their resources on migrants and ânoncitizensâ rather than those affected by Hurricane Helene.

Seeing how confident McLaren is about their car and their drivers makes me nervous. I saw that Toto extended his contract at Merc through 2026 and it just feels like same sh*t, different toilet. I think Toto should just be satisfied as the owner of the team and step aside and let another TP come in and change the culture at Merc. I think that could potentially attract new engineers that could help with the development of the car.
Lewis is struggling with his qualifying times and George is overconfident. At this point, it's starting to feel like Merc is just not that girl. Why are they starting all over again with their car? I'm fairly new to f1, but I thought it takes years to develop a championship-winning car, yet they're developing a brand new one over the winter? That doesn't feel right to me.
Also, I didn't understand TeamLH bragging about Lewis retaining Monster as his sponsor, when Monster jumped ship from Merc to McLaren. Isn't losing sponsorships a bad thing, since the team is losing money that it would likely use to develop the car that would help Lewis win his 8th WDC? A loss for the team is a loss for Lewis..unless I'm wrong.
I truly hope Merc proves me wrong, but something's gotta give. I just don't have confidence in them.
Do you think that Merc needs a major overhaul or do you think they're going to make progress continuing on the path that they're on?
Okay i was gonna answer this in the morning but i canât sleep so here we go, sorry if itâs a bit unhinged.
Hereâs the thing. In my book, the second rule of F1 is never ever listen to a team principal. (The first rule being, of course, you always, always have to do better than your teammate.) So Iâll believe McLarenâs confidence is warranted when Iâll see it. Hell, Iâll believe they really are confident and itâs not basic 101 PR when Iâll see it. And mind you, Toto seems pretty confident too. (The only thing Iâm happy about here is that he also said theyâve been working on their pitstops but due to Rule 2, Iâll also only believe it when Iâll see it.)
Theyâre starting over with their car because, as you noticed, the past two cars were Not Working. So no real choice here but to get back to square 1 rather than spend a third year trying to make a car that doesnât work, work. Building a championship-winning car is less a matter of time (I mean especially nowadays with the costcap and windtunnel allocation etc. itâs getting irrelevant), and more a matter of getting it right. RedBull got it right and they won. The problem is : the others need to develop to catch up to them because they didnât get it as right as RB, and that takes time and resources and is very complicated. And if you have a bad starting point, itâs that much more difficult. Basically there were too many things that needed changing with this car concept anyway. So theyâre starting over. But it's also not like they don't have data and experiments from the past two years. They know more about these regs and cars than in 2021. Are they gonna win the â24 championship with the W15? No. But they werenât gonna win by keeping the last, dysfunctional car concept either anyway. At least now they have a chance to develop in the right direction.
I did not read anything about the Monster sponsorship because i really, really donât care. I didnât even know that was a thing. I donât think Monster leaving Mercedes is gonna make a dent in their budget. First of all, thereâs a costcap now, so they canât throw money at a bad car to make it good anyway. Second of all, they have a lot of other sponsors. Third, theyâre the second most expensive team in the paddock. And fourth, their parent company is worth 85 billions of dollars. Lewisâ 8th has pretty much nothing to do with Monster or any sponsorship.
To answer your main question : no, I donât think Merc needs a major overhaul. Given that youâre fairly new to F1 I concede it might not look like it in the current context but changing TPs is actually Not All That. And it generally doesnât really solve anything. If anything Iâm against major overhauls. Imho a stable ground is the best ground to build up on. Toto is... Toto. But heâs not the reason why the car is bad. Itâs a whole team. 2â000+ employees. You canât pinpoint any of the problems they have on one singular person. I mean Ferrari has had 5 different TPs in the last 10 years and that has solved exactly zero of their problems, and they still havenât won a championship since 2007.
They are making progress. All of them are. Itâs just, itâs F1. Weâre talking about such tiny tiny differences in performance now, millimeters off of a piece of carbon fiber, milliseconds off of a time sheet. The time the pecking order could be turned upside down from one race to the next has been gone for decades. Itâs all about the long game when the differences are so subtle. Even more now that they, again, canât just throw money and wind tunnels at issues. Itâs frustrating when itâs not your driver/team on top but success is mostly cyclical in this sport. Right now itâs RedBull. Next who knows. Merc is just not that girl, at the moment. It is what it is.
ETA : btw I think firing Toto would really throw Lewis off so. Another reason not to imo.
