i have a very peculiar cat whose quirks basically run my life and now i cant stop imaging the 141 with a base cat who acts the same.
scraggly little tripod that gaz of all people finds inside the hood of one of the humvees (do the brits still even use these?) and latches onto him right away. probably hisses at soap when she first sees him. slow blinks at ghost first (after gaz)
she yells at price every time she wants to eat and refuses to eat unless he's standing over her guarding her. she'll use soap as a moving cat tree and just bolt from across the room and launch herself at him. she'll wander around base looking for ghost, yell at him, and then lead him over to the soft couch in the rec room to cuddle on the couch. they have a designated blanket there so she can make her biscuits in peace on them. if she's not with the other three she's riding on gaz's shoulders purring non stop. she also loves sleeping with him the most because he moves around the least
#.kiko-talks#this is just me talking about my cat through the 141#not edited at all LMAO#allmond refuses to eat if i dont sit with her or stand over her#ghost was the first one that was allowed to rub her belly too#her lack of a fourth leg does not stop her#soap calls her an all terrain vehicle#her nickname is terreneitor#.tf141#.gaz#.ghost#.soap#.price

Okay the whole thing with Metatron is getting very sketchy more and more every time.
First with the "All the almonds" coffee. Which was only weird after he already said: 'Here, take an almond coffee. Don't you like almonds? All the almonds.
At by which it was a bit too repeated. Suspiciously. Then even the episode's description has that damn drink mentioned, like it's highlighted, important.
Not to mention every angel wears white/grey/creamy but always on the lighter spectrum. Even Crowley's "bee hive" costume. But Metatron wears black.
I could say he manipulates Aziraphale, but it's more likely he manipulates everyone, given his job and rank. He wanted Aziraphale to tell about the offer to Crowley, he said he can wait with deciding on this, but then he just waited outside like he was ready for shit to go down. I don't know, these are just speculations, but it is sketchy.

Another Lighthouse Related Find
Here's another situation where I was working on genealogy stuff and happened upon something lighthouse related.
My relatives are at the top of this page from the Portsmouth City Directory from 1933 but I immediately saw the USLS (United States Lighthouse Service).

One Negro Woman Charlotte 1854
A year ago I found the will of William Allmond on an index of wills in Isle of Wight County, Virginia on Ancestry. It's taken me a year to circle back to look for the will on FamilySearch and I found it!
It's so hard to read but I do see "one Negro woman Charlotte", "one Negro boy Sam", "one Negro girl Hester" and "one Negro girl Salina".
Seeing my 3rd great-grandmother Charlotte and her children listed on here among the kitchen utensils and feather beds is just ... wow.
In the section with Charlotte, I was looking for Anthony, my second great-granduncle who was about a year old when this will was drafted in 1854 but I don't see him. My 2nd great-grandfather Moses was not yet born when this will was drafted.
I recognize Sam and Hester because I see them on the 1870 Census but I don't recognize Salina. The other daughter that I see on the 1870 Census is Liney so that is most likely Salina.
Now I really wonder because there's also Malinda who I see on the 1880 Census. Charlotte and Hester are living with her and her husband. Her age is consistent with Salina.

I recently noticed the way you draw your OC Allmond’s eyes is different from the others, mainly in their pupils. Is there any specific reason behind it?
aaa yes and no
Allmond is more of a silly/'sona'/shitpost character that isn't intended to be taken seriously and mostly just exists for fun, and when I designed her I mostly had 'I want her to look like she has the mii channel music playing in her head at all times on an endless loop' in mind so she has white pupils to make her look weird
trying to give her regular pupils looks wrong to me now and doesn't fit that vibe as well
I do often joke with friends for fun that she's got supernatural ties to the 'formless god' in some way though just because the idea of it is kinda funny to me

WIPs in your google docs got you down? Craving the validation of sharing your unfinished fic without the guilt of not finishing it? Wishing you could read what happens next in your fic without having to actually write it yourself?
Say hello to the Abandoned TUA Fic Orphanage! Simply post your WIP to AO3 and add it to this collection. And if you're a fic author looking for inspiration? Why not take a gander and see if any of the fics strike your fancy and you want to finish or even just add to them.
This collection was created on a whim without a whole lot of thought about how it will actually work, but I guess we can figure that out as we go if people think it's useful? I just know that I like many other fic authors have some unfinished fics that are just collecting dust and I wish there were something useful that could be done with them.

(prev anon) oh ok I think I get what you're saying. I think I got stuck on a parallel train of thought haha. Getting into your tua tags, I do think you're right about sissy and ray. I liked their potential (like most s2 stuff the potential was there) but ultimately their ships/characters themselves had a clear expiration date of the end of the season which makes them feel a bit hollow overall. Also lots of telling us how great the relationships were but not a lot of screen time to show it
yup.
like, on top of them being clearly season-two-only love interests, which immediately kills investment (what’s the point, if they’re designed to be gone after ten episodes?), and aside from them being there to keep vanya and allison out of the way of the main plot for literally the whole season, they’re just... weakly written in terms of their characterization. mad fucking props to marin ireland and yusuf gatewood for giving their characters so much charisma and chemistry with vanya and allison, because the characters themselves are so lackluster. those actors are fucking stellar and the reason why these characters are so watchable despite the weakness of their writing.
sissy is... well i mean. you’ve probably seen my thoughts on sissy. she feels like an incredibly flat character who isn’t allowed to do anything but be a perfect mom and whimper about how she sure does wish vanya would be with her, and it feels like sissy-and-harlan is a more whole character than sissy is in her own right. they’re a hivemind designed to appeal to fans, scrub vanya’s flaws and damage away, force a passive insta-redemption onto her, drain her powers from her, and keep her away from the plot. and then, to steal her place as the emotional crux of 210.
sissy’s biggest ‘flaw,’ according to the show, is she’s Too Nice And Considerate. it’s that she sure is too kind and good for this world. so kind and good that she leaves a note to her shitty husband about how she’s leaving him with vanya and taking their kid, and here’s the road they’re driving down by the way, sure would be a shame if your state trooper brother were to come along and stop us, which is... very dumb, but i can’t begrudge her that bc it’s so dumb that it’s literally unbelievable, and is 100% just the writers needing to get vanya arrested so she can be tortured.
and her rel with vanya is... oh man. it’s got issues. but none of the issues actually get adequately explored.
first off, sissy gave vanya brain damage, and is keeping her in her home, providing her with food/shelter/transportation/clothing/money. i bring this up, because if sissy were, say, ‘simon,’ you bet your ass the fandom would be screaming about how it’s a power imbalance and how ‘simon’ is Actually Toxic.
i also bring this up because i fucking hate the amnesia plot, and in-universe, it’s literally sissy’s fault that vanya’s bonked on the head and conveniently loses her memories and personality. if vanya did not have amnesia, she would never have fallen for sissy. if vanya were not wildly out of character, she would never have fallen for sissy.
what do vanya and sissy have in common, other than being attracted to each other and being good caretakers to harlan. what do they talk about? what do they like to do with each other? do their goals align? there’s no answer. there’s genuinely no answer, because amnesia-vanya has no hobbies or opinions or goals, and sissy can’t have those because then she’d be too much of an individual.
sissy has competently balanced running her farm and raising harlan excellently for all these years until All Of A Sudden She Can’t, right when vanya shows up, and right when vanya finds her family and starts to spend less time with her. suddenly, sissy sure can’t do anything on her own without vanya. the show plays this as genuine and sweet but... come on. either you accept that sissy’s an idiot, or you acknowledge that she’s absolutely playing helpless to make vanya want to stay.
which is understandable in that she’s incredibly lonely and afraid of losing her, but also shitty, in that by doing so, she’s cutting vanya off from her family, and from returning to her life, because she wants vanya to herself.
oh, and vanya literally never told sissy, that in their plan to run away together, that they were going to the future. as far as sissy knows, they’re going to another town or state or some shit. isn’t that something you should tell your partner? especially if you’re so in love and totally trust each other?
and vanya never tells sissy about her family or her powers. she conveniently avoids telling this woman she supposedly loves with all her heart and trusts completely. because, deep down, she does not trust her. deep down, she knows sissy wouldn’t like who she really is.
their relationship is all vanya giving and all sissy taking: vanya initiates the relationship, defends her, comforts her, and takes care of her kid for her, and spurs her into the ‘let’s run away’ plot. and yet somehow, all the development is invested in sissy growing as a character and learning to accept her queerness and find the confidence to leave her husband, while vanya stays flat and doesn’t change in any meaningful way.
and when it comes time for sissy to support vanya, when vanya tells her who she truly is and asks her to please listen and believe her and support her, just like how vanya has supported her, sissy’s first response is to jump into a car with her kid and book it out of the state. of course the show states that it’s bEcAuSe iM sCaRed fOr YoU but... come on now. no it’s not. you know it’s not.
it’s that sissy loved amnesia-vanya, not real-vanya. it’s that she wanted to be taken care of, and the second that vanya needed sissy to reciprocate, she was not interested in giving it. it’s that vanya concealed who she actually was because she knew, deep down, that sissy would leave her if she knew the truth. and she did.
to repeat: sissy loved amnesia-vanya. she loved the emptied out blank slate version of vanya who only ever does things for her, not who vanya actually is. she has no interest in vanya’s damage, or in helping her handle it, or in being in a relationship that’s mutually supportive.
if the show had explored that... if the show had explored all those issues, we could’ve had something genuinely interesting.
you could explore how vanya tends to feed herself to relationships where she’s doing all the work, because she’s desperate to be loved.
you could explore how good, loving relationships can fall apart when they’re imbalanced in terms of who’s giving love and support to who.
you could explore how only loving the positive, light, sunny side of a person cannot possibly make a relationship last.
you could explore how desperate sissy is for any kind of connection that she’s willing to fall for an amnesiac who doesn’t even know who she is, who she doesn’t really have anything in common with, and to quietly keep her from leaving.
you could explore how desperate vanya is for any kind of connection that she’s willing to fall for someone she has little in common with, and withhold the truth from her because she’s afraid she’ll leave. (and... then is proven right for doing so, because when she opens up, her girlfriend does exactly what she’s afraid of, and leaves her)
you could explore how vanya’s abandonment complex is probably worsened after watching her girlfriend ditch her, specifically because she realizes who vanya actually is
you could make sissy a nuanced, complicated character whose actions and mistakes are meaningfully examined, and furthers the show’s plot, character development and themes.
but it doesn’t, because the show doesn’t acknowledge that sissy’s clingy and passive and not as invested in reciprocating affection as she is in receiving it. because if the show did that, then sissy would be a more three-dimensional-character, but she’d also be less likable, and as the ‘hey we heard you want vanya to have a girlfriend, so here she is! all hollow for you to fill with your own projections!’ character, we can’t have that.
and raymond.
oh man. he could’ve been so fucking interesting. he’s a strong leader with firm principles, a deep sense of optimism, and incredible love for his community. yet he’s also the kind of man who’s quick to turn on his wife, lets his wife prep his protest for him, takes credit for it when it goes well, and then throws her under the bus when it doesn’t.
i also think that the ~ray being cOnFuSeD at hargreeves shenanigans~ got old fast. he’s so patient that he’s a saint, and i’d have much preferred it if it ran out. after a point, it just becomes unbelievable that he’d be this accepting of all these random people with superpowers showing up at his house, attracting murderers, literally time traveling in. there’s gotta be a breaking point, and he doesn’t have one, not because he’s just that patient, but because the writers are too chickenshit to give him one.
and man oh man. his relationship with allison has fantastic chemistry, and you get the sense that (unlike vanya and sissy) they actually have things in common, and can do things and go places together. they have shared goals and interests, and they’re a solid team (i say solid, but not good, because... well. the Trust Issues. if they were just friends, i’d be fine with it. if they were just dating, i’d be fine with it. but they. are. married. and yet they’re still acting like That). i actually buy that this is a person allison would fall for, and that she would want to have a life with (... unlike vanya with sissy).
their relationship is framed as super positive and wholesome and mutual but... textually, it isn’t at all.
in their very first scene, it’s shown that allison’s feelings for luther are strong enough to cast a shadow over her marriage to raymond. even though she thinks luther’s dead and has been happily married for a year, she’s not over him. which is to say, she loves raymond less.
and throughout the season, it’s slowly revealed that allison married him more for comfort than for love. she liked him, and found him attractive, and enjoyed his company, but when push comes to shove and luther comes back into her life, after maybe a week, she’s ready to abandon her husband of one year for him, a man she hasn’t even kissed yet. which tells you exactly how much she cared about ray, in the end.
i mean. allison was Black, and a woman, and unable to speak, and without any id, any family, any home, any car, any job, any money... in 1961. her best option genuinely was ‘marry a man who can support me’ and she literally did it. and the show doesn’t explore that. i mean, how interesting would it have been for vanya to talk to allison about how upset she is that sissy’s with a husband she doesn’t love, and for allison to tell her that that’s just how shit is in this time, and you have to go with the options you’re given.
beyond that, allison and ray are married. they made a choice to be together for the rest of their lives... and yet they do not trust each other.
allison didn’t tell ray about her family, or about her other husband, or about claire, her fucking daughter who died. she didn’t tell him where she’s from, or about her superpower, or about when she’s reconnecting with her family. he does not know who allison is, and she, his wife, isn’t comfortable with telling him.
which begs the question: why was he okay with her not telling him? wouldn’t you want to know these things about the person you’re intending to spend the rest of your life with? and if he didn’t ask her at all... why?
ray’s first response to seeing allison’s power doing something frightening is to accuse her of having used it on him. his first thought is ‘oh, you manipulated me.’
ray’s first response to seeing his wife rumor that cop to save his life is to find that extremely suspicious, which is a perfectly rational response.
what isn’t rational is that the first thing that ray, Supposedly Good Husband, thinks to do isn’t to talk to her and get her side of the story: it’s to turn around and sprint away, leaving his wife who he sure does love so much alone in the middle of a protest that’s gone violent, where cops are literally beating people within an inch of their lives, where said cops are within grabbing distance of said wife who he supposedly sure does love so much.
he left her alone in a white neighborhood to find her own way home. this is the same white neighborhood where allison was chased by a mob of white men who wanted to hurt her at best.
(and if allison didn’t tell him about that experience... Why Not. he’s her husband, and he’s a fellow activist, who is planning a protest in that area. he would need to know, and she either told him and he left her there anyway, or she didn’t tell him at all, because she didn’t trust him that much. both options are bad news for this couple.)
not only did he spend an entire night away from home, but much of the next day too, and he doesn’t let her know he’s okay and not, you know, dead, or make sure she’s okay, or not, you know, dead. while allison spends a whole day on the phone with every hospital in the city, looking for him, on the verge of a breakdown, because she’s worried he’s hurt or dead... it’s revealed he just slept on a friend’s couch, and went around telling their friends and peers that she can’t be trusted. for someone who supposedly loves his wife deeply, he sure turned on her real fucking fast.
allison and ray have a lot of chemistry. they’re a solid team, and they have common interests. but their relationship has a lot of glaring issues: the withholding of crucial information, the lack of trust, ray’s tendency to cut and run when his wife does something he doesn’t know what to do with, and allison blatantly favoring someone else over him, and having been with him in the first place for comfort.
and i mean. ray, watching allison and luther together, knowing that they’re deeply in love, and that allison, his fucking wife who he adores, blatantly loves this other man more than him, and that after only learning that this man is alive, she immediately plants one foot out the door and takes only a few days to leave a year of marriage to ray for this man she hasn’t even kissed yet... that must hurt so much?
you could do... so. much. with that, dramatically speaking.
you could talk about the systemic lack of opportunity available to women in the 60s, especially Black women, and how that often led to being pushed into imbalanced unhappy relationships, because that’s the only way a woman can make a living, and how that ultimately makes everyone miserable.
you could talk about how Black women get sidelined and spoken over within civil rights movements, even by the men who care about them.
you could talk about how allison is so emotionally closed off because of the trauma she grew up suffering that she literally wouldn’t tell her husband a single thing about her.
you could talk about how allison copes with being all alone in strange places by latching onto a man she can outright manipulate (patrick) or at least maneuver around any true intimacy with (ray), shaping herself into a performance of the woman they want her to be, while pretending that all her pain and trauma don’t exist, and making them fall in love with her, while keeping herself emotionally disconnected enough to be able to just drop them the second something goes wrong or someone better comes along.
you could talk about how ray’s life is being upended and imploded because of allison and her family, and how exhausting that can get. how there’s a cost to this family’s chaos, and innocent people can get hurt because of it.
you could explore how terrible it can be, to discover this person you love doesn’t love you nearly as much, and is settling for you.
you could talk about how even sweet, loving relationships can be utterly destroyed if both parties don’t trust each other with who they are.
you could make ray a nuanced, complicated character whose mistakes are meaningfully examined, and furthers the show’s plot, character development, and themes.
but the show doesn’t. it’s all lost in the background, and it’s either not acknowledged at all (the massive gaping trust issues) or vaguely gestured towards (allison settling for him), rather than explored in any meaningful depth.
because ray is here primarily to 1) ensure that allison and luther can’t get together until episode ten, 2) be the good wholesome non-pseudo-incest option to ship allison with, (and 3) keep allison out of the way of the main plot for the entire season) and if ray does anything slightly problematic that is actually acknowledged, then people would dislike him.
and in s2, as is the case with everyone, being likable matters more than being an actually well-developed character.
it's as simple as 'change the character or change the story'
either we own the fact that raymond's passing himself off as a forward-thinking leader while keeping the sjcc's presence stagnant with outdated tactics (and lets his wife and the women do the actual work so he can swoop in and take credit for it, and then scapegoats his wife when it goes wrong), and that his relationship with allison is a transactional relationship with zero actual trust or intimacy that starts to splinter as soon as she gets her agency back, and that it ends so poorly that allison doesn't warn him he's in mortal danger when she leaves him because that's how much she can't stand him.
or we retool him into an actual forward-thinking leader who is a team with his wife (and the protest they participate in isn't a sit-in), who he doesn't immediately leap to suspect or put down whenever she does a thing he dislikes, who she actually trusts with important information (maybe not 'i'm from the future' but 'my family is dead/i was adopted/i have five brothers and one sister/i have an ex-husband and a child/my family is dead'.... something). and we keep the overall arc of 'wow allison and raymond are great and it sure is a shame that she has to go back to the future and he has to stay around to fight the good fight.' and allison like... tells raymond 'by the way now that the public thinks i'm a communist spy who killed the president, you should probably run for your life since you're already a target for the cops, and when they bust down our door looking for me, and they find a crime scene in our living room and you can't tell them where i am, you're fucked' ... instead of just leaving him to deal with that and zero heads-up.
either we own the fact that sissy had a one-week long affair with a woman she knows nothing about, who she gave brain damage, who she is extremely possessive over and plays helpless to guilt her into staying, and who she would literally rather flee the state from than get to know when she reveals her true self. and that their relationship is the product of two lonely people trying to escape a shitty situation rather than a sincere love connection, and that they're better apart.
or we retool her and her relationship into something slower paced and genuine, where they actually make a good, stable, positive couple and where sissy embraces who vanya is instead of running away screaming from it and they part amicably, off to live their truer, happier selves and being positively affected by their relationship giving them the courage to do that, even if it isn't with each other.
the issue is, the show doesn't do that. we're left with that mess instead.
