Hello,
I am Mohammad Al-Manasra, writing to you from amidst the ruins and destroyed homes, where I live in a tent that offers no protection from the scorching summer heat or the biting winter cold. I lost my parents and sisters in the war on Gaza, and now I am living with my wife and our three children in extremely difficult conditions. 😭😭😭
I appeal to you for assistance in protecting what remains of my family and providing for our basic needs. We need to share my story to achieve the goal of my campaign and to get my family out of this deadly situation.
Your help in spreading my story and your support would have a significant impact on us. 🙏♥️
This fundraiser was verified by 90-ghost and ibtisams
Hello Mohammad, thank you for reaching out. I wish you and your family all the luck in the world.
Please donate to help Mohammad, his wife and his three children get to safety! They are currently at only 1,588€ of their 40,000€ goal!
Their children, Abdulrahman (6), Sarah (4), and Lina (3) are all missing out on having a normal childhood. All three of them have serious insect bites all over their backs, which need regular medical attention.
Mohammad himself has chronic asthma and has had an allergic reaction, both of which need treatments that are either too expensive or outright unavailable in Gaza because of the war.
If you can't donate, please share the fundraiser. Every little effort helps!

great allergy post btw!!
I think its easy to say good allergies aren’t that bad because they’re avoidable and the symptoms aren’t really chronic in the same sense that typical disabilities are. But my god the social effects! Having to bring your own food everywhere and be mindful about traveling and plane rides constantly is really draining after a while, especially with very common allergens like gluten or meat or egg. Like it’s crazy to me that most people can just eat whatever (like random food trucks in particular because damn I wish) because I’ve never gotten to do that
also the comorbidities! asthma alone accounts for a long term impact of allergen exposure.
people do not care to understand the severity of anaphylaxis and I've even been in first aid trainings where all they did was pass the Epi-Pen trainer around. a certain popular public charter [R.E.D.A.C.T.E.D] doesn't even mandate allergy certification through the first aid/cpr provider they choose. (a majority of first aid/cpr courses I've taken are phenomenal with allergy training fwiw)
ANYWAYS here are the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and what to do if you or someone is experiencing them!
If you or someone you know is experiencing anaphylaxis, call emergency services immediately. Do not delay care. If you're unsure, call anyways. Symptoms can be rapid or within 2 hours of exposure.
Do not delay care after administering epinephrine (Epi-Pen, Adrenaclick, Auvi-Q, etc), it is only temporary, hospital care is necessary.
Do not assume that someone with an allergy has an epinephrine injector, especially in places where you have to pay for healthcare.
If someone goes unresponsive and is not breathing during an allergic reaction, start CPR (adult | child+infant) immediately.
Image description: an infographic from the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team titled "SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ANAPHYLAXIS"
Anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-LAK-sis) is a serious allergic reaction that comes on quickly and has the potential to become life-threatening. The most common anaphylactic reactions are to foods, venom, medications, and latex. Anaphylaxis signs and symptoms that may occur alone or in any combination after exposure to an allergen include:
MOUTH: itching, tingling, swelling of the lips/tongue/palate (roof of the mouth)
THROAT: hoarseness, tightening of throat, difficulty swallowing, hacking cough, stridor (a loud, high-pitched sound when breathing in)
LUNGS: shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, chest pain, tightness
GUT: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
CNS/BRAIN: anxiety, panic, sense of doom
EYES/NOSE: runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, watery red eyes, itchy eyes, swollen eyes SKIN: hives or other rash, redness/flushing, itching, swelling
CIRCULATION/HEART: chest pain, low blood pressure, weak pulse, shock, pale blue color, dizziness or fainting, lethargy (lack of energy)
Symptoms involving the throat, lungs, and circulation/heart are marked with asterisks, indicating immediate and potential life-threatening symptoms.
Consult with a board-certified allergist for an accurate diagnosis and management plan.
Although the majority of individuals experiencing anaphylaxis have skin symptoms, some of the most severe cases have no rash, hives, swelling
EPINEPHRINE is the first-line of treatment for anaphylaxis Antihistamines, inhalers, & other treatments should only be used as secondary treatment. Always carry two epinephrine auto-injectors at all times.
When you, or someone you know, begin to experience symptoms, CALL 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY!

“if you think transgenderism is real and people can just choose to be women then do you think that ollie london getting all those plastic surgeries to make himself look korean actually makes him asian??” my cousin is allergic to peanuts and whenever she’s exposed to peanuts she gets all red in the face and wheezy and her chest gets tight and she can’t breath. my brother can’t do too much exercise without needing to use an inhaler or else he gets all red in the face and wheezy and his chest gets tight and he can’t breath, so this must mean he’s allergic to exercise instead of having asthma, a completely different condition with different causes and treatments even though they can look similar in their presentation. this argument is so stupid different situations are different and people forget that similar doesn’t mean identical

I’m less pleased with my decision to have gotten this surgery.
Surgery wasn’t 100% successful
Sick from asthma because I was not given the lung treatment I needed immediately upon waking because of my heart condition they were already aware of that does not cause problems with my asthma meds
Found a tiny, straight slice on my stomach that wasn’t there before
Found a tiny, straight slice on my thumb in the hand not even being operated on
(I’m concerned someone gave me a med I’m allergic to but I can’t remember because post-awake anesthesia memory is a mess, and it is confusing in my body)

Happy birthday!
Also, going off your previous asthma posts, get well soon!
Thank you!
Also, I'm completely fine now, apparently my asthma is severely allergy triggered, so I'm getting a specialist appointment to try and do more treatment for it. As long as I avoid my allergy, I'm fine! But we haven't figured out what I'm allergic to yet

I went to an allergist this morning. Ken has been doing allergy shots for ~2 years. Unfortunately he seems to be in the small percentage of people who don't have noticeable improvement from them. His allergies are way more severe than mine, but for the years that he's been in treatment it's been rattling around in my brain that maybe I could treat my allergies.
Growing up, I didn't notice allergies until I left for college and then had major snot and itchy eyes when I visited home, where my parents had two cats. Maybe some seasonal stuff but not much - just the visits home. But my love for cats is stronger than my annoyance at constant nose-blowing and itchy eyes, so I knew I'd have cats anyway when I lived on my own.
Fast-forward to graduating college and getting an apartment - a month after moving in I adopted Theo. He was a perfect boy in every way and I am in no way over my grief at losing him so I want to minimize anything negative associated with the time I had with him. But it really wasn't bad! I'd notice major allergies if I snuggled him with my face, but like... I didn't make a habit of rubbing my face on him. Sometimes you just gotta rub your face on your cat's perfect belly, but in general my face wasn't THAT close to him and the allergies weren't a big deal. I'd take antihistamines when they flared up, but that wasn't particularly often.
Then I cat-sat for my friend who had FOUR cats in a townhouse similar in size to mine. (She had two cats, then met her now-husband who also had two cats, so when they moved in together all of a sudden they had four cats.) The allergies were INSANE. So I was like, okay, one cat in a townhouse is a manageable amount of dander/allergens for me, but four cats in a townhouse is not.
As it turns out, two cats in a townhouse is borderline! And they aren't even allowed in our bedroom most nights because they're kittens and do not know how to behave!
So, I made an appointment and the allergist was really nice. She definitely was judging me for being like "I am pretty sure I'm allergic to cats! Yes I will continue to have cats for my entire life, and no I will not strictly keep them out of the bedroom or off of the bed." But she was really nice about it, and I have an appointment for early April (! so far out!) for a skin test. I expect it'll show I'm allergic to cats and dust/dust mites. I'll probably elect to do shots.
I think the typical shots routine is 1-2 times a week for some number of months, then backing off to once a week and then once every few weeks. But they also have a "rush" option where you come in from 9am to 2pm on one day and do 6 shots 30 minutes apart, then stay for 2 more hours for observation, to cut about 2 months off the timeline.
ANYway the real highlight was getting Subway on the way to the office after the appointment and having a little extra car time for podcast listening. The anti-highlight was the breathing test (I have exercise-induced asthma and an inhaler, and cat dander can trigger asthma, so they wanted a baseline of my breathing abilities now).
#personal#allergies#like yes the reasonable thing would be to not have cats#but that is not a possibility for us!#and the fun of cats is snuggling them!#so i also will not abstain from that!#i didn't want to go to this doctor because her last name is the name of my ex#but she was the one who was available and she was GREAT

If you’re someone who struggles with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) or chronic hives, you know just how frustrating it can be to find a treatment that actually works. The constant itch and unpredictable flare-ups can disrupt your daily life, making it difficult to feel comfortable in your own skin. While antihistamines are often the first line of defense, they don’t always get the job done for everyone.

I’ve been meaning to get something like this done for a bit, and this post from @my-autism-adhd-blog gave me the nudge to type it out.
I’m keeping it here in my own post, though, to not clog their notes too much. 😅
I’m sure anyone with an invisible illness or neurodivergence has had to come up against the idea of “Well, back in my day, no one ever had [very real problem you are suffering from], we just bucked up and deal with life!”
Oh, really?
Do you [theoretical irritating naysayer] know when the term anaphylaxis was coined?
You know, “hypersensitivity (as to foreign proteins or drugs) resulting from sensitization following prior contact with the causative agent”?
The potentially fatal reaction where people can lose the ability to breathe? A very real, repeatedly proven reality for a large segment of the population?
It was created in 1905.
(I’d go into more about the individual who named it, but he also subscribed to a lot of the worst fields of thought in the early 20th century and therefore we shall move on.)
On the other hand, we have writings explicitly referencing horse allergies from the turn of BCE to CE (one of the sons of Roman Emperor Claudius), among others.
What we now recognize as Seasonal Allergies have been identified around the 16th century, under names like “rose catarrh” (as in, a believed reaction to roses, most likely a reaction to the pollen of other plants during their blooming season) and “summer asthma” (asthma being used as a general term for an ability to breathe).
What fascinates me is the end of the 18th century, where
Seasonal allergic rhinitis was now often observed and recognized. The term “hay fever” replaced “rose cold.” Physicians believed seasonal allergies were an aristocratic disease because it was most commonly diagnosed among the upper class. (emphasis mine, taken from document described below)
Huh, I wonder why upper class people would be the ones most diagnosed with seasonal allergies? I wonder what myriad of reasons could lead the financially secure to seek out personal aide for non-debilitating but extremely uncomfortable symptoms?
Not the least of which being a lifestyle which allows it to be merely non-debilitating.
Anyway….
At some point I want to fully read this summary of the book Ancestors of Allergy edited by F. Estelle R. Simons (as getting my hands on the text itself would be more effort than it’s worth for me personally). What I’ve skimmed thus far is fascinating.
Here’s a timeline from those 16th century misclassifications of seasonal allergies to the present understanding of allergic reactions (as the source from that one quote from above):
It’s humbling to see the development of understanding and acceptance towards a medical condition we take existing for granted nowadays.
On the other hand, the length of time it took to clarify these experiences when they have indisputable physical symptoms (if sometimes difficult to identify triggers) can be disheartening when we thing about where the scientific community currently is regarding mental health, neurodivergence, and invisible illnesses.
But my main take away in this review of the history of allergies:
It was never new. It had always been there, people had always suffered from it. The only things that changed were the public perception of the condition and the treatments afforded to people struggling under things other people dismiss.
@my-autism-adhd-blog ‘s post about dismissive attitudes towards neurodivergence, specifically Autism and ADHD, which reminded me I wanted to share this all with my pocket friends and anyone it breaks containment for.

me: theres so many strange lung remedies in these old books. what if i gave joey horrible asthma and hayfever and such and had doc weds take care of him
@in-death-we-fall: 😂
@ims0vain the liquid cocaine again!
this time for hayfever ('autumnal catarrh' - any kind of nasal congestion got called 'catarrh' back then)
[from The People's Home Library, 1915 - 'The People's Home Medical Book', p. 108
"HAY FEVER. (Autumnal Catarrh)"
"Hay fever is an affection of the upper air passages. It generally comes on about the middle of August and continues until a good frost.
"TREATMENT.—"
"Change of climate. Dry mountain air is the best. Sometimes a visit to the seaside is good. But we cannot all take this treatment so I will give some local treatments also. Cocaine applied to the nostrils is good but is rather dangerous for anyone but a doctor to use."
Dobell's solution looks to be mostly borax, a mild antiseptic also used as an eye wash, so that's probably safer. The second one is some more antiseptics and the last one is minty grease water, like a liquid Vick's Vapo-Rub.
"Spray the air passages with a 1 to 5,000 solution of adrenalin chloride".
The adrenalin [adrenaline] would actually contract tissues and help with inflammation and allergic activity in the nose, though.
#original post#mediverse#i was thinking of high school era#when does the cocaine enter the story im not sure yet
