Voice actors are NOT the same as actors.

It takes a specific kind of skill-set and training to be able to warp and meld the voice. It takes a certain kind of talent and dedication to hone that talent into the ability to meld the voice and invoke emotion with one's voice alone. Actors are used to using their voice secondarily to their body language and their facial expressions. It's all mirrored back on camera. They do have nuance. But it's a different kind of nuance and a different kind of training to produce that nuance.

Voice actors might get their likeness transposed on their character's design, and maybe their mannerisms might seep into the character's animation. But when it's all said and done: their presence is in their voice. They are bringing a character to life, showing that emotion in their voice, trying to keep a specific accent, drawl, pitch, tone in that voice and keep it consistent for their recording sessions.

The voice actor is like a classically trained musician who can play first chair in a competitive, world-renown orchestra. The actor (who fills the voice actor's role) is like a moot who played violin in beginner and intermediate high school orchestra and thinks they can get into Juilliard with that 2-4 years of experience.

This doesn't mean that the HS orchestra moot can't play. They can even be really good at it. Maybe they won competitions and sat first chair. But they are not in the same league as the person who's been training their whole lives and lives and breathes to hone their craft using the instrument and all of the training they've ever acquired to perfect it. They are not meant for the same roles. They are not in the same caliber. You do not hire the HS equivalent when you want to play complex music in a competitive orchestra.

Actors are not the same as voice actors.

And furthermore, actors - especially big name actors - taking the roles of animated characters for big budget films or TV pilots makes no sense anyways when - at least in the case of TV pilots - there's not a point to hiring a big budget actors anyways. That money could be used elsewhere (like paying your animators), and the talent that is brought onto the screen for X character could then be hired on to voice said character no recasting required.

I wouldn't say voice acting as a profession is in danger exactly, but it's certainly being disrespected and overlooked for celebrity clout, and this has ALWAYS been an issue. Shoot, even Robin Williams knew that much - which is why he tried so hard not to be used as a marketing chess piece for Aladdin and got royally pissed off when it happened anyways. People shouldn't go to any movie (but especially not animated films) because "oh famous actor is in it". People should go because it's a good movie and the voice acting is good.

People who honest to god think that voice actors are replaceable because "oh well anyone can voice act" or "I like xyz celebrity so naturally it'll be good" ... Honestly I just wish you'd reassess your priorities because you're missing the point and are part of the problem.

Voice Actors ≠ Actors.

something i feel like rpf fandoms can lose sight of is that fic doesn’t have to mirror real canon or even your own headcanons; fic doesn’t have to depict something that the people your characters are based on would realistically do; writing something in fic doesn’t mean it’s how you think it would happen if those humans were in x scenario, and it doesn’t even have to match your irl feelings about those irl people; fic can just be fiction and fun and silly and imaginative, playing in a sandbox with some beloved source material. your characters can be characters who, while based on your faves, are not shackled to the laws of reality. your author’s voice and writerly sensibilities don’t have to match your opinions and preferences as a fan. you can just explore and create! you don’t have to ‘get it right.’ you’re creating ‘it,’ not trying to divine some truth out of the knowns and unknowns. and honestly, if a writer can write something that would be canonically totally implausible and it still comes across as believable within their fic universe, then that’s the sign of a great writer!

Necessary Context: After the dragon attack on Treviso barely being fended off, when Viago and Teia meet up again they just stare at each other vaguely mutually shellshocked for a few minutes and then have some really intense sex about it for the first time in a while. This is right after that.  

She kissed the tears from his cheeks, stroked his hair as he blindly turned his face towards her, as if searching for her in the dark. When he opened his eyes and looked at her, her heart broke all anew, all over again. You would think it would run out of new ways of doing that, eventually. It hadn’t yet. 

“Oh, mi amor,” she sighed on a soft broken laugh, cradling him closer to her with an artless helpless sort of greed, “what have you and I done to each other?” 

“Nothing I would ever let anyone take away from me,” he said, voice cracked open but steadier than she’d ever heard it.

“I’ve missed you so much,” she said. 

“You see me every day, now,” he said, with that characteristic unerring instinct for pedantry. She wanted to laugh almost as much as she wanted to cry. The world was ending and Caterina was gone and everything was coming apart at the seams faster than she could stitch reality or the city itself back together towards wholeness, but Viago de Riva remained perfectly, inalienably himself. 

“I do,” she said quietly, stroking his dark wavy hair away from his forehead. “It makes it worse.”

His bare hand found hers. Their fingers interlaced, tight. 

 “Yes,” he said. “I know the feeling.”

companion shri’iia au and you meet her in the blighted village where a couple of goblins are cowering around her, at first she’s wary at the group’s arrival but when the bluetooth worm connection happens and player character is like oh you’re tadpoled like us she’s like yes true… and when you ask her about how did she get here she will say the goblins took her here, mentions something about an absolute etc. you ask her who she is she’s like im shri’iia, an adventurer 🙂. if you ask her if she’s good at fighting she’s like yes im a paladin after all 🙂 and you can recruit her bc she agrees that getting rid of the tadpole is the priority and the odds are better if u stick together. alternatively if you point out that it’s strange to see a drow in the surface she’s gonna be like the same way it is strange we have worms in our heads no?

but if you walk around one of the damaged houses there’s gonna be an opened discarded book that regales the tales of this paladin adventurer and she basically mimicked what was written when she was introducing herself. if you point it out to her later she’ll be like oh that’s a fun coincidence ☺️ and leave it at that

I don't expect it to be ~graphic~ because of the channel, but this is #confirmation of what I always knew. Those two are freaky deaky. Tan is obsessed with Fang and Fang is hopelessly charmed by everything he does. And they're like 21 year old dudes. And Fang appears to live a nice ass place without his parents there? Oh yeah, those two have been getting down this whole time and I refused to ever believe otherwise. The evidence all spoke for itself.

I eagerly await tomorrow's episode so I may pop the biggest bottle. <3 <3 <3

Had the most awful ruined day because my flatmates who had been telling me that I'm not doing something (doing my portion of the weekly cleaning) that I very much DID do each week, decided today to fully reveal their awfulness and keep pestering me over it once more, telling me that I don't clean and asking me to tell them what exactly I cleaned like they're the owner of this flat and not just someone I'm sharing a living space with, and all the while I was being polite about it and not attacking them over all the things I could be bitching about if I were them, like how THEY don't clean after themselves and how they're loud at 4am and keep inviting friends several times a week. What I got in return was that they apparently thought I wasn't home so after I stopped texting them the same thing over and over they all met up and loudly made fun of me and congratulated each other over the "sick burns" they threw at me and implied that they think I'm stupid and somehow don't understand what I'm being told. All the while I was sitting in my room wanting to blow the entire place up because I needed to leave for a meeting I had later and couldn't leave that godforsaken flat.
