so dean selling his soul in "all hell breaks loose" probably already makes you insane, but it should shred you like cheese and here's why:

it's established in season 1 that sam wants out--after they find azazel and kill him, sam's done. he tells dean this outright in 1x16 "shadow".

dean's not happy about it, obviously, but dean never argues with him outright. he asks sam to stay, and sam says no, and dean stops trying to argue. we get kicked-puppy dean, but dean's accepted this for the most part.

even in season two when things start to go sideways, sam doesn't really change this plan. sam's focus tilts more on being "saved," and it's implied that he'll be free when azazel dies--there's that endpoint again, when sam can be normal, "when it's over." when it's over, sam is done with hunting.

most importantly, sam doesn't tell dean that the endpoint has changed, doesn't even hint at it. going into AHBL, dean believes that sam has come with an endpoint, and that it's here if they kill yellow eyes.

after the deal's been struck and yellow eyes is dead, dean doesn't plan on telling sam anything. not only does he not plan on telling sam how they got him back, he's not planning on telling him how long the contract is, sam wheedles it out of him because dean's not very good at lying to him.

that means, that when dean sells his soul in AHBLP2, dean is selling his eternal, mortal soul for a year with sam that he is not expecting to see.

sam is going to spend dean's year in california, with friends that sam's long-since fallen out of contact with, (some of which think he and his brother have been on a crime spree bc of 1x6 "skin") safe and as far away from dean as his legs can carry him--or, sam's just fucking off away from the life to god knows where, and dean's letting sam go because sam asked him to. not letting him die, never letting him die, but letting him go.

dean in the season two finale is telling sam, "i love you, so i am making my death anonymous. i love you so much that i will die alone."

the intense, silent devotion of making a sacrifice anonymous, of surrendering the right you have to your own death, of accepting an eternity of literal torture so sam can exist--that's it, just exist--away from dean but alive somewhere.

Fuck! That was my reaction to Sam hollering "Lily!". Even Demon controlling ava literally flinches. Jesus Christ, his voice is so thick and heavy!!! They didn't use Jared's voice to full potential..

Ah! I love how Sam is all simmering in anger when Azazel tells him about the plans for special children and why he had to kill Jess. But the moment Azazel mentions that it was about Sam and not Mary, you can see the sadness and guilt take over. Aww baby

Love how Sam figured it out that it was ava.

What a waste we never saw Sam use his powers to full potential

Sam Winchester fought a man with super strength, with a broken shoulder!! Say Sam is not strong one more time, I dare you!

Kinda shitty isn't it? That Sam's purity is what gets him killed all the time.. As a show of good faith, he drops the knife (one Jake Probably didn't even know about because it's actually Ava with him in the scene when he finds the knife) and in the end Jake uses the same knife to stab Sam.

This is still the most difficult death scene for me to watch. Yes, I can see Dean being dragged to Hell by Hellhound like easy peasy lemon squeezy. But something about Sam's death in this episode is so gut wrenching. I don't know what it is.. could be a combination of all: Jake's betrayal. The fact that the death is severely gruesome compared to what's seen on the surface. While it looks like death by stabbing, it's more than that because Jake's power is super strength, he uses it to not only to stab him but also to cut through his spine. And of course, Jared's acting is what turns my blood cold.. 😭😭

Jared's acting in this scene is scary good. Like the stab is so powerful, he can barely scream. The way he sinks to the wet ground, swaying, barely acknowledging Dean's presence. Then he falls onto his brother, still out of it, trying hard but failing to keep his head on the neck and eyes on his brother. Then he is gone. Hands hanging by his sides, head on Dean's shoulder.. goshh!

I think Sera Gamble understood Jared's potential quite early on. So she started writing Sam with more complexity. The very first episode she wrote was S01E03 Dead in the Water but it's actually from Faith that she started writing these deeper layers for Sam exploring his ideas, beliefs, faith and then she pulled out the big guns and open fired at Sam.. can I say I love her for that?!!

it had to be dean who finally killed azazel not john not sam because dean is the family's core mary's ghost may haunt the narrative may have been what propelled this family quest but by virtue of her being dead she can't be home or hearth when john disappears on a hunt and sam's too young to feed himself in this month's crappy motel. when the moment comes john can help because he's the one who made mary's boy into his perfect soldier but john can't do the deed himself can't pull the trigger mary cocked the day her eldest son watched her kiss the demon wearing the father who made her a hunter no not john who wasn't born with killing monsters in his blood john who wasn't bred for it like mary campbell and dean winchester and it can't be sam either. sam can witness but sam has to be immobile relegated to mere voyeur as the demon who polluted his blood dies on the other end of his brother's gun because he's john's son and mary's son and dean's son and this is about him this is about parents righting a wrong against their child this is about a child killing the thing that wore his father before murdering him this is a wife killing what snapped her husband's neck this is a husband killing the demon who burned his wife this is a brother killing the monster whose schemes stabbed his brother in the back. life dragged them broken and bleeding to an eleventh hour where dean is father-son-and-holy spirit(mary) in a way sam is not of course it was dean it could only have ever been dean

Place bets now on how Thorin & Company hear of their burglar's survival and latest insanity (highest bids placed on the remaining Blue Mountain travelers passing along word vs a smarmy message from Thranduil), how quickly they shake off their shrouds of mourning and royal pseudo-widowhood, and where exactly on the path between Erebor and Mount Doom they manage to catch up to and dog pile an unwitting Hobbit.
