The Force Awakens Breakdown

So I know no one gives a shit about my opinions on movies and my last post about the sequel trilogy [ST] But honestly I want to continue talking about these crap movies. So now that we got that through, lets start.

1) Jar Jar Abrams start this movie by basically ripping off the concept of the OT [Original Trilogy] The First Order [The empire] has taken over with a dark side user [Kylo Ren in this one, and Darth Vader in the OT] with a more powerful dark side user in the background pulling all the strings [Snoke and Creamy Sheeve respectfully] With an opposing side that happening to be small in numbers, [The Rebels and The Resistance(What they're resisting, no fucking clue, but it sounds nice)]

2) Rey Palpatine (I refuse to use the other name) is the protagonist of this story, and just so happens to live in a desert planet, you know like Luke. And happens to be the most laziest character Jar Jar and Kathleen Kennedy ever created. She's kind, and friendly and her only flaw is that she doesn't have any family. She's a scavenger, yet has so much proficient in the force, you would think she's been training for decades. She has great skill in flying ships and fixing them, that you would think, it would at least be a throwaway line. But nope, she has no reasoning for knowing how to fly or fix ships and the only reasoning we really have is that, Jar Jar wanted it, so he put it in. And throughout this movie and following ones, she picks up skills like their pokemon cards because fuck hard work. Now Rey pisses me off, not just because of her lazy character, but because during all the movies, nothing ever fucking happens to her, she doesn't get hurt to an extreme degree like Finn, She doesn't go through a huge revelation, all that happens is that Rey loses Han (someone she barely knows) then she magically beat Kylo,( who if you don't remember has years even decades over Rey in training) and then decides to find Luke. And that leads to the third problem...

3) The movie is too full. for being a movie that is 2 hours and 16 minutes, yes I fucking looked it up, this movie seems to drag on and not develop any of their concepts. Because while I fucking agree that Rian Johnson left fucking nothing for Jar Jar to work with, at least his story had some character development, and yes it dumb and breaks the world but I'll take what I can get. All the main characters in this movie all ends up the same as they start off with. Rey is a happy and kind character with no past, turns to Rey is a happy and kind character with no past and force abilities. Kylo Ren is tangled up Christmas lights drenched in yogurt and acid, and turns into a tangled up Christmas lights drenched in yogurt and acid, who ends up Killing his father. But if you remember is haunted by that death by TLJ [The Last Jedi] Poe Dameron is a self assured Spit-fired Pilot and ends up a Spit-fired self assured Pilot who's Not dead. Even the characters who do get develop, Finn and, oh my god, it's only Finn, get's completely rewritten in TLJ and gets the story arc redone just terribly. We can't even talk about Han, Leia or even Maz, because Han doesn't change and then dies, Leia doesn't get enough screen time to show anything about this character, and Maz is supposed to Yoda in a yellow and female clothing, and they do shit with that too because it leads to this..

4) Maz Kanata and holy fuck, she's literally the reason Han is dead. Maz yells very loudly to the entire cantina that Han Solo is here, which leads for the First Order to be notified. She somehow has Luke's lightsaber [It doesn't get explained, not even in the later movies] and somehow Rey is drawn to it, and leads to Maz giving advice, but you know the shitty type because it ends with Rey running away in the forest for her to get caught by Kylo. She tells Finn that he shouldn't leave, and that it turns makes him severely injured. And if you don't remember she does the same to Han, and he ends up dead. And her cantina gets fucking destroyed after being their for centuries, yet she couldn't give a fuck. and it shows the true issue, Jar Jar and Kathleen Kennedy in extent doesn't give a fuck about characters and just wants to to get from point A to point B with a lot of flashing lights.

5) Han Solo: Character Assassination. A character who developed into a man who was ready to risk it all for the rebellion. A character we loved in the OT is now broken down into his New Hope person all over again. Who apparently has scammed everyone in the galaxy? Um, Jar Jar, I know it might seem strange to you, but a smuggler needs people who trust him to get jobs and therefore receive income. But I guess I shouldn't expect much from the same man that think a Smuggler would want to be easily known or recognized. Also Leia and him are either broken up or divorced and that makes me feel really happy to know a couple that I loved are no longer together and one of this dead. Because Han Solo is just there for fan service and to shoot his gun, because that's what he's here for to go pew pew. Oh and to die, that what all the OT fans wanted, One of the main three characters killed by their own child.

6) Subtle doesn't exist in this movie, everything is given the delicacy of a hammer. We find out that Kylo or Ben, (I really don't fucking give a shit) is the son of Han solo, by Snoke just saying, the droid is in the possession of your father Han Solo, like no shit I assumed that when you mentioned the Millennium Falcon. Who would you think I thought Kylo was the son of, Chewbacca? Finn's story arc is the only one that makes you think, and brings a new aspect to the movies, and to the Stormtroopers. I just fucking wish we could do the same for the others Stormtroopers, because the other are killed with no regards that most of them, as Finn states were sold into this at a young age. Good job Resistance for killing all these people who was forced into this with no regards. How does a series that came like a decade before you (Star Wars: The Clones War Series) manage to develop the concepts that stormtroopers or clones are not mindless drones better than you. (The Rookie episode in the first season helps flesh out all the clones and they only have 25 minutes per episode, get you're shit together Lucas Films) And these are only the examples I could think of, off the top of my head.

7) Rey is a great example of Sexism, but instead it goes the other way around then usual. All the male characters are laughed at and or ridiculed, but all the females are perfect and don't need to change. One of the last scene is a great example of this, Kylo Ren, the one with years of training and two powerful masters who trained him, gets beat by Rey, someone who has no skill with a lightsaber and didn't even know she could use the force until Jar Jar decided to pull it out his ass. Even Finn who has at least close quarters fighting skills under his belt couldn't beat Kylo, and has to be saved by Rey. Now I will admit to being a feminist but Kathleen version completely differs from mine. Because while I believe both men and women are both capable of reaching the same level of skill, Kathleen think women should be able to do incredible things without working for it. And it clear by her stupid "The Force is female" Like shut the fuck up, the force was never given a gender, why the fuck are you doing it now? I also found out that most of the Crew in Lucas Film, happens to be female. and it's clear who's doing that. Again I am a feminist but I hate when people just have diversity for the sake of diversity instead of the person's capabilities. It's very vindictive of the Feminist movement, The Black Lives Movement and LGBT+ agenda as well, as we're trying to make people see them as just like everyone else which they fucking are (I will not stand for any form of bigotry and if you don't like something simply because of someone's race, gender or sexuality, you are shit human being) , they just so happen to not be a straight white man. And that they have the same struggles as everyone else. Also we already had strong female characters in the series without the big emphasis on the fact that they have a vagina. As from the basis, Star Wars was never about gender and because of this we got fully developed character we could relate to.

Now Dishonorable Mentions

A) This movie is fucking 2 hours and 16 minutes long, yet it feel so unfinished

B) Jar Jar Abrams deep seated love for mystery boxes and how it get more screen time then the actual Character it involves (Rey)

C) The movie could've been great, they're was definitely potential but it was dwarfed by mystery boxes and Visuals

D) Rey is not a Mary Sue in this Movie, she becomes one by the end of TLJ but she's not yet. So I guess it one positive.

E) Jar Jar inability for world Building, and doesn't even fucking tries to explain how the First Order even began to rise.

F) Poe Fucking Dameron, and the amount of time that is dedicated to him. I love him but come on, just make it someone like Han, as it could bring up the relationship between him and his son, which could then bring more emphasis when we reveal their relationship. But no lets bring up a character who we all assume is dead until about the end. And then does absolutely fucking nothing.

G) And Lastly when we see Han die, we don't get a scene of any of the characters we give a fuck about and who knows Han mourn his death, instead we just have two characters who had about 15 minutes of screen time with Han, and Chewbacca. And it doesn't get better because Rian Johnson decides in the second movie that we don't need a scene of Luke mourning over the man who fought side by side with him and is his Sister's husband. No Instead we get a scene of him drinking tit milk.

So that's it, well for now, I'll make another post for this if I have any more issues. But that it for now. I would also like to make it damn clear now, as I'll probably continue this, that me tearing apart a movie is based soley on the technical aspects of it. And that if you enjoyed this movie, you are entitled to it, but you cannot defend this movie's writing , because as I hoped I made clear, the writing is very much shit.

A freeCodeCampChallenge

Gaining Speed

This marks my second freeCodeCamp challenge. As I mentioned in my after action report from the first FCC challenge (tribute page), it took some time to finally gain traction and fully complete that project. That was a problem with (one) unnecessary complexity of design and (two) a lack of planning (before I began to code.) It was my assumption that if I laced the project with many working parts, I would learn much, much faster; also, that by getting right to the code, I could pick up the syntax, semantics and general knack for writing (code) in less time. And wow, I was very incorrect in thinking so.

As a response to my previous poor start (with my tribute page,) this time I was better able to address some lessons which had only occurred to me when halfway through the last project. So this time, I really dialed in the importance of streamlining my initial paperwork designs, learning how to more proficiently use Figma and some of its tools, how to better approach icon design with Photoshop and vastly improve my entire workflow. This provided (not only) an easier build, but also a more efficient angle by which I was empowered to catch more lessons along the way.

In the next few paragraphs, I will detail just which specific advantages I picked up in terms of HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript capability. In addition, I will move through some of the tactics I employed to help me finish this challenge with much more confidence than the last.

Planning Stages

When I set out to hand-write the marked goals (set down by FCC’s challenge,) I do find it tedious. The thing is, I am copying (in my own words) precisely what the challenge is demanding of me. Let me elaborate…

With every line, I am telling myself that I really do not need to do this. I mean, I can pretty easily peer over at the other browser window (when necessary) and see exactly what my marching orders are. Though albeit true, there are a couple of key differences in (one) reading from FCC and (two) writing/reading my own notes.

As I write out every expected step of my project, I can build an image immediately for how I would like my creation to take shape. This falls in line with the visual aspects and design, the color scheme, the functionality of each element and the code itself. It is a powerful method to which I will pay better respect going forward. (I already have plenty of ideas on how to implement more potent procedures — like larger drafting paper, (which will allow for a greater landscape on my pages, maybe using a tablet for notation and perhaps a few voice recordings along the way)). Now, I may be getting ahead of myself! Back to the plans..

And so writing out the objectives is terrific for lots of reasons, but moving to the drawn design itself — this may be the most crucial bit yet. Here’s the deal. When I physically drew the (expected) survey form, I may have well completed the whole project. So what does that mean?

I took so much liberty in imagining what the design should resemble. More specifically, I let my mind wander and allowed thoughts to spill out onto the legal pad before me. This (in combination with my understanding of how everything needed be expressed in code) let me structure my rough draft with such a degree that the next step made the actual coding like an exercise in copy and paste. I’ll expound…

I was drawing parts which were effectively elements of HTML. This was followed by some (more precise) markings of pseudo-code (which amounted to about all of the HTML I required to code for the whole challenge.) So, when I say the planning has proved to be useful, this would be an undestatement. This attention to planning has made it possible for me to avoid the ‘nuts and bolts’ in my code editor. Now, this advancement is massive, because the saved time and effort was a testement to why I was then able to better learn more intricate detail when coding. And now let’s get to those lessons and the code at large.

Within Earshot of Paper and Pencil

My goal is not to elaborate on the use of specific technologies, but more-so the process itself. however, I will briefly touch on Figma and Photoshop…

Using Figma helped me focus on each element and understand how they more literally fit together in the puzzle. I was able to name every piece such that it would show me what my HTML element should be in code and how each need be named. Also, I took those separate entities and grouped them such that I could postion everything exactly as I wished. My next goal with Figma will be to utilize the ‘component’ feature and truly unroll some strong functionality of the software.

Regarding Photoshop, I made a logo for my survey and spun it into a favicon with relative ease. In an attempt to create animations and advertisements for my affiliate site, I have better come to understand Photoshop’s effectiveness. Thereby, building my icon was fairly straightforward. I simply pieced it together with a couple of layers and exported the PNG. I still want to be able to employ SVGs for this application; but until now, I haven’t perfected the craft. I will leave that for the coming FCC challenge. Onward!

Coding the Beast

The first topic to address here is quite obvious for me… SUITE TESTING.

When I began coding this project, I wrote my HTML boilerplate and immediately tied in the FCC testing script so I could begin verifying my code at every turn. I’ll elaborate…

I ran into a few issues with debugging throughout my last project; those were problems which resulted in code errors piling up on me simultaneously. And, while an error (for which you don’t know the remedy) is frustrating…several of those errors (all at once) becomes infuriating. Luckily, I ran into a great solution. Unit testing.

By instantiating the FCC test suite before I began coding the bulk of my project, I was then gifted the opportunity of verifying each of the sixteen goal posts.

In more detail, nearly no problems snuck up on me while coding the breadth of this project because I was adamant on addressing them in real time (as they appeared). What a true life-saver...

Input Text (element, attribute)

I found it repetitive and annoying at first, when the 10th goal of this challenge asked me to give both the input and label elements their own respective and corresponding ids. This was because I (very simply) did not understand the request. Along with that, I definitely didn’t understand why it was being asked (to begin with.)

That said, I now realize that the goal was to identify the label for the text field, in addition to the field itself. In understanding this distinction, I have now been able to find value in this very feature.

By giving ids to both my labels and input texts, I was then able to style each distinctly and find them with more ease (while peering though my HTML.) Now here’s real solid tip which I will not soon forget.

Don’t Pick More Than One Option!

So, I was writing the code for my radio buttons and what happened next is certainly a rookie mistake. When I navigated to my browser (in order to test the options,) I found that EVERY one of my buttons was clickable. And this, for obvious reasons, is not ideal.

This solution was super easy. All I needed to do was unify (or make each value the same for) the input-radio buttons. After I placed cloned values for each radio button, only one option could then be chosen. Success!

Nitpick the Name and Ids

This is something which should possibly be glossed over. But, when working with various input fields, I was asked to employ many names and ids for each.

While I’m not entirely certain (even now) whether there is a standard for which comes first, I have come to realize that name attributes should possibly supercede id attributes.

Using Visual Studio Code, it seems to like placing names before ids. And in a real life estimation, using name over id seems to be old-fashioned, but admirable.

More seriously, I understand in code, name will be less subjective (while more actionable) and ids will more far more particular and prone to alteration.

Dropdown

I was in a position to use dropdown boxes twice in this project. The problem I came across was that my options continued to begin with the default option as selectable. While I learned the solution quickly and with ease, I believe it should be recorded as vital.

When inserting a placeholder option in a dropdown box, in order to keep it from being a clickable entity, you have to style it as such.

I called the id of the option in my CSS sheet and set its display as none. That easy.

Pseudo Class and Element Selectors

Very little of my experience with this challenge dealt with pseudo class or pseudo element selectors. But, I will cover (in short) what I did learn (with these topics in mind.)

Using a pseudo element selector is the best (or maybe only) way to call an attribute from an HTML element and style with CSS.

This is how I was able to change the appearance of my placeholder text in each input-text.

I know pseudo class selectors are the way to alter elements (in a certain state) like ‘hover’ or ‘before’, but I haven’t used them enough to expand this monologue. That said, I’ll press on…

Attribute Selectors

In confluence with my previous words, I may have provided a misnomer to exactly what was being modified with pseudo-elements. But, I digress (and hopefully you see what I mean).

Using attribute selectors is quite different from other selectors, because you will be placing true brackets in as your selector which house your attribute, followed by an equal sign and a set of quotations (housing your value.)

Looks like this [attribute=“value”]. And that’s that!

Media Queries

While I employed media queries for this project, I have yet to fully grasp exactly how to use them (in reference to appropriation and context.) Therefore, I will not go into detail; but, only mention that I used them to alter my CTA button across pixel-widths. Also, I realized that setting a new media query works better when starting with the immediate values from your last screen size.

A Bit of JavaScript

The big task I pushed for in this project was this: change the client-side font family for a text area as the user types. And by big, I mean, it took me about as long as the rest of the whole challenge to learn this functionality with JavaScript. That said, I now understand much better how JS semantics are employed. And, that’s pretty priceless…

For this goal, I inserted a script with an event listener. First, I started with DOMContentLoaded, which allows for firing without the images or styling need be loaded.

The next bit lets my document be called by its (element) id.

Then, it states that my id will be triggered by any input (via an eventListener) and will force my later instantiated function.

The function declared will let the charCode number equal a string which will be console.log(ed) out as my target.value (of Nunito, sans-serif) with proper style.fontFamily.

Conclusion

Attempting to wrap this project up in a nice bow is difficult, as I have onboarded a great deal of information (from one simple survey page.) After completing this task, I am left with a split-brain. While I have learned so much from something, seemingly straightforward, now I am thrilled to make it to the next project and take on those new expectations.

I suppose my takeaway is that I should fine-tune my HTML and CSS understanding and seriously crack open all that is JavaScript. All which, can wait until tomorrow. Cheers!

Masterpost: Naruhina headcanons

As Naruhina is my ultimate OTP out of all ships, I’ve collected plenty of personal headcanons of this dummy-dum-dum couple for years. And finally I’ve decided to make a list out of these HCs and take a look how does this list actually look like.

This list includes both non-smut and smutty HCs of this pairing.

Naruhina headcanons, a period after the Fourth Shinobi world war and before the Last

- After the Fourth Shinobi world war they started getting close to each other and to spend time together, just the two of them

- They, for example, went to farm markets, visited Neji’s, Kushina’s and Minato’s graves, went grocery shopping, Ramen Ichiraku and coffee shops together, visited festivals, looked after Mirai together etc. etc. They always found time to spend time together.

- Also, because of their shared interest in flowers, plants and nature overall, they often went for walks in forests, parks, gardens, you name it

- They always had a lot to talk about, but occasional silence never made them feel awkward – anything but that! It was very comfortable, actually.

- Hinata did visit Naruto’s apartment couple of times, but they were never alone there – there was always some kind of gathering between Rookie 9 going on

- When they hanged out with Rookie 9, the others organized things so Hinata and Naruto were always able to sit side by side

- Naruto teased her by poking her arms and sides - he found it amusing

- Hinata, on the other hand, teased Naruto by pouring drink ultra-slowly into his glass ‘til it frustrated Naruto

- They shared birthday presents with each other

- Naruto’s feelings for Hinata gradually grew to be romantic in this period, but because he actually didn’t understand the concept of romantic love, he wasn’t able to name these developing feelings even though he hadn’t felt the same with anybody else before. The thing is that no one had ever properly taught him what romantic love actually was like nor did he educate himself in that, either. Therefore, he ended up thinking that Hinata was just a very special person to him.

- On the other words, he thought he knew what romantic love was like, so when Naruto started to have those new, seriously romantic feelings for Hinata, he didn’t really know what they were

- Naruto found Hinata sexually attractive and found himself fantasizing about her often

- First time when Naruto complimented her looks, it was as trivial thing as her hands

- Hinata, too, sort of accidentally complimented Naruto’s looks couple of times, but Naruto didn’t think there was any bigger meaning behind those compliments – he thought she said it out of being kind and friendly person over all

- Hinata once came to a thought of Naruto maybe having some sort of feelings towards her, too, but she very quickly denied it to be the case. She found hers and Naruto’s relationship being very much alike with Naruto’s and Sakura’s, and Hinata knew that those two were nothing else but best friends to each other. Therefore, Hinata came to a conclusion that she was nothing else but a good friend to Naruto.

- Naruto found himself wanting and waiting to see Hinata anywhere he went, especially after missions

Naruhina headcanons after the Last

- When they started dating, it was emotionally overwhelming for Naruto to see Hinata being like home in his apartment. It was such an odd, speechless and beautiful sight. After all, Naruto was alone for years, so seeing Hinata doing normal stuff in his home was very meaningful and powerful thing for him.

- Naruto was the one coming up with the idea of getting married. It happened in the morning after a sleepover, when Hinata caught Naruto watching her sleeping next to him in his bed.

“I think we should get married”

“I think so, too”

- Sure, the proposal happened very shortly after them being officially a couple, but he knew whole-heartedly that Hinata was the one for him, so he found the idea of waiting unnecessary, even idiotic.

- They didn’t mind giving Hinata’s father the power to plan the wedding ceremony. What was the most important thing for Naruto and Hinata was that their loved ones were there - and that they would finally have each other.

- Boruto was a ”planned mistake” (”if it happens, it happens, baby is welcomed”) and Himawari was planned. Getting pregnant with Hima took a lot more time and money than with Boruto.

- Hinata never huffs at Naruto, but when she gave birth to Boruto, she said ”you’re breathing too loud” to Naruto. Naruto still teases her about it.

- When Hinata gave birth to both Boru and Hima, Naruto felt the same feelings as when she fought with Pain - it was hard for Naruto to see Hinata in pain while he couldn’t do anything to ease what she was going through - he felt helpless

- Both times when he got his kids in his arms for the first time, he was absolutely terrified it was all just a dream

- Hinata named Boruto, Naruto named Himawari

- Like every couple, they argue, too. When they argue, they don’t shout or raise their voices to each other, but if they do, the other one will always point that out. But, on the other hand, silent treatment is rather common, especially on Hinata’s part. Unfortunately.

- Naruto is better in strategic and logical games. Hinata, on the other hand, in games which need good memory and general knowledge.

- Naruto can be a little jealous, not often tough, but he’s not possessive over Hinata. He calms down quickly after a sincere talk with Hinata of why he has nothing to worry about.

- Hinata is a talented singer and Naruto loves listening her singing and humming

- They sleep in different beds, because Hima, earlier Boruto, too, sleeps in the same bed with Hinata. This is okay with them, because kids’ wellbeing is their nro 1 priority.

- They’re both interested in or at least follow politics. He often talks about politics with Hinata, because it helps him getting a little wider perspective to things, which is also helpful for his job as the Hokage

- Naruto is good at buying presents

- He’s also a good keeping speeches, telling stories and at languages

- Hinata desided to stay at home with kids, because she wanted to give their children a childhood she and Naruto never had

- Himawari has been very patient, well-behaving and understanding towards her dad, his work and absence - this actually worries both Hinata and Naruto, because they’re afraid that Hima hides her true feelings

- They’re actively in touch when Naruto’s working

- Even though Hinata is mostly a stay-at-home mom, she is still very much needed at Hyuga compound as a spokes person and representative, because she is better at working in conflicted situations than her sister because of her calmness and rationality - she’s been suggested to go in politics, even

- Hinata understood what Naruto’s inauguration as the Hokage would mean to them – him not being able to be with his family, that is. She prepared herself for it for years and came to fully accept the inevitable situation (after all, she knew who she was marrying). But what was still hard for her to bear was how it affected on their children and Naruto.

Naruhina smutty headcanons

- Naruto felt so nervous during their first make-out-session, that it was Hinata who took the lead

- Hinata was raised to wait till marriage, but she couldn’t keep that – once when they were making out, the mood took them, and they went all the way

- Their first time was very passionate. They felt like it was something they’ve been doing for ages - it felt that right and natural for both of them.

- After their first time Hinata was in shock, because she never thought she could actually do that. She didn’t feel guilty, tho. She felt blissful and happy it happened.

- Seeing, feeling and hearing her reacting to his touch so passionately meant a lot to Naruto, and it was something that both turned him on and made him speechless; and still does, actually

- Hinata is very self-confident in bed, which puts Naruto over his knees

- They prefer being equals in bed, but you could still say Naruto tends to be in a submissive role more often than Hinata, while Hinata is the leading one

- ... that being said, Naruto enjoys seeing Hinata pegging and Hinata loves being sub

- Because Hinata can deep throat, face fuck is part of their rougher sex life

Rex & Cody (Reunion)

Summary: The empire has fallen and Cody is ready for what awaits him when the new government arrives at Kamino to put all the stormtroopers and officers on trial. He reconciled with his fate, but a big surprise awaits him. Aka Cody and Rex finally reunited

The empire has fallen. The Emperor was killed by Darth Vader, the rebels destroyed the new Death Star... The new government will be here soon to put everyone on the base under trial.

The officers, who were dumber and desperate, called on recruits not to surrender at the mercy of the enemies and fight to the last in a fit of patriotism. The simple fact that this is no longer makes sense did not bother them. Unless they really hoped save what the empire. The smarter officers were in a hurry to get out of the planet as quickly as possible. Cody watched all of them with undisguised irritation. Did everyone truly believe that the new government would forget about them and their merits to the empire so easily?

The republic, the empire, now the new government, consisting of former rebels... Only the wrapper has changed.

He already saw how one system collapsed and another grew in its place. He himself took an active part in this, exterminating the Jedi one by one, not to mention the hundreds of people displeased with the empire. Rex once tried to warn him of the possible danger of the chips, but Cody didn't want to think about it. He believed in the Republic, and therefore he had no reason to doubt the official reason of Fives and Tup's death. He was a blind fool.

Utapau have changed everything. He well remembered the moment when he gave the order to shoot at General Kenobi. Then everything seemed natural and correct. They were born to become good soldiers. And good soldiers follow orders. This words was into his mind for many years, not allowing him to think about anything else, and actually turning him into an obedient droid.

The Great Army of the Republic quietly molted into the Stormtroopers. There was no paint on their armor and there were no more names anymore. They became numbers again. They all turned out to be only obedient toys in the hands of the emperor, cannon fodder, which can be easily replaced and no one will notice the difference. Controlled by the chip, they themselves did not think about who they were once, and what awaited them in the future.

Year after year, Cody fought the enemies of the empire, losing his loyal men, his brothers. No longer burdened with caring for his brothers, Cody used excellent effective strategies that cost the lives of many of his friends.

Awareness of what had happened came to him much later, years later, when the chip finally ceased to operate. Indifference and detachment were replaced by loneliness and endless nightmares. But there was no one else to support him in the minutes when pain and despair overwhelmed him. He wanted to howl and cry with powerlessness and anger.

Rex died on Mangalore with Asoka Tano, and Cody did not want to think how he felt when the brothers turned their blasters against him. If Rex removed the damned chip... If that was so ... Cody did not want to think about it. It was to painful to think about.

Gregor and Wolffe disappeared somewhere in the Outer Rim and never got in touch with him, no matter how much Cody tried to contact them. Cody could understand them, but that didn't make it any less painful.

The empire spared no one, not even those who helped it to rise and gain power. Those few of his brothers who survived have scattered around the Outer Ring, no longer needed by the system they helped in the past. Some of them were more fortunate, and now they served Darth Vader, forming the new 501st legion.

According to the emperor, Cody was bestowed with the greatest mercy - to train a new generation of stormtroopers. Cody has thought that madness or death would been much more merciful. He despised a new generation of stormtroopers.

They were not clones. They were not breed for war and were not trained since they were born. They had childhood. They had families and life outside the base, they joined the army with certain goals, and they could leave it if they wanted to, they even had salary and pensions. They won't be thrown like garbage into the streets of Coruscant like clones.

In the distant past, when he came to the mess, he saw one familiar face of his brothers. Brothers were everywhere! They were always friendly, and he could share everything with them. Nowhere else did he feel the unity that was between him and his brothers.

They sharing one face, one voce and one fate. They sharing rations when they had long campaigns and difficult days of endless battles. They have always been a large family where no one is ever been alone and could always find sympathy and support in difficult times. Despite the fact that they were born to become a consumable, a faceless mass that should fight for the good of the republic, the clones created their own world with their language and traditions. They could no longer be considered ordinary numbers, they had long become personalities. They had names, their own habits, their own unique tattoos and scars, they had paint on armor...

Waxer was fortunate that he did not live to see how 212nd return to Ryloth to establish a new order. He was lucky that he did not help Boil and the rest of his brothers to shoot the rebels. Cody was wondering if he would have gone mad if he had seen the girl Numa among the dead? Or would he died with Boil in an ambush arranged by Cham Syndulla? Cody did not want to think about it, but every time he involuntarily looked at himself in the mirror, he could not help but recall what he had once lost.

The empire entrusted him with training recruits. He was the best of the best, he could pass a lot of useful knowledge to a new generation of stormtroopers. The faceless army, which brings death to all of empires enemies. But Cody saw their weaknesses and low potential. They were ordinary people. How could he bring up ideal soldiers from previously unsuitable material? Stormtroopers were not his brothers and never will be. They could not even become those to whom he could entrust his back. Cody despised them, never ceasing to compare them with clone troopers. The clones would never have made such stupid mistakes at the training grounds, the clones would not have left the brothers on the battlefield, the clones were always united.

This contempt was mutual. Cody knew very well how his subordinates treated him. Some officers openly wondered why such a relic of the past, like him, still serves to the empire. In some ways they were right. But Cody was not going to please them with his dismissal. The truth was that he had no idea what he could do outside the army. He fought his whole life and was now infinitely old and too broken to change anything in his life.

Somewhere deep down, he was hoping for a death sentence that would free him from the need to continue living memories. If only the rebels attacked their base... To die in battle is much more honorable than to be executed by people who despised the clones and did not know anything about their difficult fate. He was too tired to fight, and too proud to make one shot that would free him from the hated service.

“And how long are you going to behave like frightened gungans?” Cody asked in exasperation, tired of all this nonsense.

The recruits, who were crowding near the headquarters, turned to him. There was a strange, strained expression on their faces. He often saw this look on the faces of everyone he met this days. Did they expect any special behavior from him?

“Lieutenant Jem ordered us to wait for further orders,” reported the boldest of them. It seems the comrades called him 501. Cody had long ceased to bother remembering rookies numbers.

"Further orders? Did he learn how to speak with ghost of the emperor or is he hoping for the mercy of the new government? Brainless idiot. If you did not want to run from here along with the rest, then get down to duties and guard the perimeter of the base! As soon as the rebel ship appears...

“There is no need for this, Commander,” Lieutenant Jem smiled smugly, leaving the headquarters. He could boast of some competence, but all this was lost against the background of his exorbitant pride. Cody thought that he would not have survived on the battlefield and day. " To be honest, I assumed that you would decide to resist. But I don't blame you, Commander. This is part of your nature. As far as I know, loyalty is laid at the genetic level in clones and therefore you cannot betray, even if you want. Am I wrong?

That is why everyone looked at him with such a strained expression? They believed that something would click in his head and he would fight the rebels like an obedient machine that could not fail to follow the program? Cody was glad that bucket hiding his face at the moment. This is not the first time that he has been compared to a meat droid, and perhaps not the last. The empire did a great job, and now no one took the clone differently than the obedient, inhuman machine.

Cody clenched his fists, forcing himself not to move. He was not going to give Jem what he wanted, and what the all rookies desired. All those people here are morons who would not survive a day in a real battle. This battalion was not worth a dozen clones of the Great Army of the Republic. And therefore it was not worth falling to their level.

“We decided it would be wiser to give up without resistance,” Jem continued, not waiting for his answer. “The rebel leadership has already contacted us and informed us that if we do not resist, the court will be lenient to us. They will be here shortly with the Jedi, about whom there were so many rumors. Therefore, I think you will understand me, Commander, none of us wants unnecessary misfires. I, as the future representative of our base, relive you from duty. And until all issues with the Jedi are resolved, you will be placed on punishment cell. It will be very bad if you remember the glorious past and decide to kill Jedi. But you know, I find something quite ironic. Now the fate of the clone will depend on the mercy of the Jedi. And he is unlikely to be merciful when he discovers that you were one of the first to open fire on the Jedi!"

Cody could not stand it. How could this banta shit be better than him? Only because he was born by mother and had family? That he had where to go if he wanted to quit the army? Jem was something like Jar Jar Binks, but nothing like soldier. Cody did not think that he could still hate someone with such fury. Probably, Jem did this on purpose, so that he could send Cody to the punishment cell in handcuffs. But Cody was satisfied that he could smash his nose.

The rookies managed to pull Cody away from Jem, and someone snapped the handcuffs on his wrists.

“If I were you, I wouldn't be so happy, Lieutenant,” Cody spat out fiercely. "It's unlikely that the new government will want to have such unskilled banta shit like you by their side. As for me and the Jedi, then so be it. For someone like you, you don’t understand everything that connected the clones to the Jedi. “It is below my dignity to be interested in the life of pitty clones and long dead Jedi,” Jem said angrily, adjusting his collar on his uniform and carefully touching his nose. "Take him away!"

All the way to the camera passed in silence. The rookies only looked at each other, but did not dare to say anything. Perhaps they were glad they got rid of him, but Cody didn't care. The punishment cell is not so bad, especially when you do not need to communicate with anyone in it. If Skywalker really wants to take revenge, then this is his right. Cody's rage gave way to indifference.

When the cell door closed behind him, Cody sat on his bunk and covered his face with his hands.

There were various rumors about Luke Skywalker, and each of them was one more fantastic than the other. None of the people who spread this gossip had ever seen a real Jedi.And they attributed to him such abilities that even Obi-Wan Kenobi could only dream of.

Cody did not want to think about his former general at all, but he dreamed about him more and more often in bizarre nightmares.

He landed on Utapau again and fired again, but instead of falling, Kenobi found himself next to him. But he was not that man Cody remembered him, but he was old man with the same dull look as he had himself. The general was saying something, but Cody could never remember the next morning what it was. And was there any sense in that? The dead must remain dead. His mind often played cruel games with him.

“Maybe I saw you because I'll join you soon? Am I right, General? ”

Cody pulled out of his pocket an old and long poorly displayed holofoto. The only thing that remained with him after many years of being in darkness. There were young Cody, Rex, Fives and Echo. Happy, full of hope and faith in the Republic. Fives was the first to know the truth. Could something have changed if Skywalker believed him then?.. Or if Cody believed Rex and pulled out the chip? Would anything change, or would Cody die at the hands of his brothers like Rex? Too many “ifs” arose every time he looked at this photo.

“Wait a little longer. I will join you soon. ”

Cody lay down on his bunk and closed his eyes. He imagined Rex and Fives - how he would tell them everything that had happened, and how he would ask Rex for forgiveness for not believing him. He will be able to have a drink with Boil and Waxer, listen to stories about Numa, whether she survived in the horror that was happening on Ryloth or not. They would have had the tenacity to find her on the other side. He will retell Echo the books that he managed to read. They'll together they will discuss the differences in the charters of the Great Army of the Republic and the stormtroopers corps. Of course, the comparison won't be in favor of the latter. He will no longer be alone and full of regrets.

Perhaps one day he would even dare to find Obi-Wan to ask him for forgiveness too...

He had a nightmare once again. He was almost a droid, unaware of what he was doing.

Good soldiers follow orders...

His mind was stuck somewhere deep in his head and powerlessly watched everything that was happening.

"Cody!"

He almost forgot his real name. There was no one who could call him by this name. Did he kill them himself or did one of his brothers do it. All that remained of him was an impersonal number, and at times Cody thought that it's much better.

Good soldiers foolow orders...

"Cody!"

Cody knew that voice. Did General Kenobi still expect anything from him? Why he couldn't just leave him alone in his misery? Cody realized with surprise that he could control his body again.

“Cody...”

Cody turned around to recognize that voice. For some reason, Obi-Wan was much older than the day he died. He stood nearby and looked sympathetically at Cody. Feeling guilty squeezed the heart with renewed vigor.

“You are dead, sir. Leave me finally alone!"

Cody clenched his fists and forced himself not to look away. If he let himself look at Kenobi, it will only get worse.

“You are not guilty of my death, Cody,” he said softly, slowly approaching him. “I have told you this more than once.” “Do you really think that I remember my dreams?” Cody smirked, feeling trembling. He is tired. Endlessly tired of the severity of guilt, which pressed him for everything that he did, without controlling himself. He killed too many innocent people. He once knew many of them personally and many of them were his friends! “But don't worry about that. Soon we will have a lot of time to talk about it."

Kenobi's gaze became even more sympathetic.

“Luke will be very surprised when he finds out what you think about him. Unfortunately, I have too little time to convince you, ”Kenobi sighed heavily and laid a hand on Cody’s shoulder. “But you're right. We will still have time to talk about it. But not the way you think. Everything will change soon. You're not alone."

Cody opened his eyes and cursed at those idiots who could not open the cell the first time. He poorly remembered what he dreamed of, but for some reason it seemed that this was really important.

"Commander! The rebels have arrived!" 501 reported. "So what?" Grumbled Cody. Of the new batch of recruits, this one was the most annoying. He often showed unnecessary curiosity and emotionality. He loved to read and re-read the charter, and hoped to someday climb the career ladder as high as possible. A naive idiot who could hit the target only thanks to great luck. Do not open your kriffing mouth before your superior are allowed you to speak. Or do you expect to serve under the Jedi?"

Cody was annoyed again. Why ask such questions now? Did he really hope that Cody would tell him about his life? The galaxy will not lose anything from the death of the old clone. On the contrary, everyone will forget about him and his brothers very quickly, leaving almost no true stories.501 was not the one to whom Cody could entrust keeping the memory of the clones of Jango Fett.

“I'm sorry, Commander, but you leave me no choice then.” Cody froze, sensing a threat from his back. 501 aimed at him from a blaster. “Lieutenant Jem has ordered you to be eliminated before you meet the Jedi. Instead, he heard the characteristic sounds of stunning and falling body. Cody managed to open his eyes just in time to see the 501 crashing to the floor, dropping his blaster.

Cody turned to see his unexpected savior, and for a moment forgot how to breathe. It was Rex. Unlike himself on the holofoto, he also grew older, like Cody, and grew a lush beard and baldness. He wore the green uniform of the rebels, but the arms of the old armor, painted in the colors of the 501st legion, remained on his hands. Cody read a whole gamut of emotions on Rex's face: from the joy of meeting to the pain of realizing that a little more, and they could never see each other again.

“Hello, Rex,” said Cody in response, not knowing whether he should have rejoiced at this meeting or got angry at Rex for making him mourn his death for so many years. “Where did kriff you be all these years?!” “Cody...”

Cody almost forgot that name. By the time the clones got freedom, there was no one left who could call him by name. He was glad that it was Rex who reminded him of who he was once.

Rex came closer and pressed Cody's forehead to his, grabbing his neck. In this simple gesture was all that he had been deprived of all these years. Warmth and care. He is no longer alone. Rex will be by his side and is unlikely to let his Jedi touch him.

“Kriff, I'm almost late ... Did you make this poor thing crazy by quoting the book?” "Rather, told this banta shit that his existence make no sence." “Well, give him a little break” Rex grinned grimly. "We'll return to this later. Now there are more important things to do. Come on, brother, you need to get that creep stuff out of you." “Afraid of the new Skywalker?” “I rather do not want you to go through this again. For a couple of moments they walked in silence. Cody was willing to bet Rex was thinking about Fives right now.

“I ... should have listened to you then,” Cody sighed heavily. “Maybe things would have turned out a little differently... By the way,” he squinted at Rex, “you could have let me know that you were not dead.” "Sorry. I was afraid... "Rex looked at him with pain in his eyes. “After the Mangalore... Cody paused, as if he had run into an invisible wall, and looked at Rex with disbelief.

“Kriff, what the heck are you talking about? General Kenobi is dead! I myself gave the order."

A strange shadow ran across Rex's face. He also stopped and laid a hand on Cody's shoulder. Sadness was read again on his face.

"Everything is somewhat more complicated than you think. General Kenobi is dead, but it was not you who killed him, but Darth Vader several years ago. This is a long story. General Kenobi was able to trick death. The Jedi can do things that we cannot understand, ”Rex grinned and scratched his head. "I don't go into subtleties, but General Kenobi exists in the form of a disembodied spirit of Force. And only a Jedi can see him. Skywalker will tell you more if you want. Kid really wanted to meet and talk with you."

Cody said nothing, pondering what he heard. If Rex's words were true, then it turns out that those dreams were not dreams at all? Did Kenobi somehow try to get in touch with him, despite what happened on Utapau? In his place, Cody would not have been looking for someone who might have caused his death. But the Jedi have always been characterized by unusual behavior, especially General Kenobi. Why then did he never remember what Kenobi told him in his dreams?

Cody made himself forget about all the pressing issues when they stopped at the door of the med bay. Here his journey as stormtrooper will end, and Cody did not feel regret about this. He glanced at Rex.

“If you disappear again when I wake up, I will not forgive you.” “Don’t worry, I will stay next to you until you feel better, vod” Rex smiled, watching Cody lay on the table. “And then we will find you other clothes to replace this trash.”

Cody laughed for the first time in many years. Rex did not deceive his expectations. He knew that Rex would not like the trash that the empire proudly called stormtrooper armor. Clone armor saved them from crazy hits many times, but it was worth a shot at the stormtrooper and their armor didn't protect them.

“I hope for you, vod,” the droid injected him with something, and Cody felt himself falling asleep.

They will still have time to discuss all the shortcomings of the stormtrooper armor and talk about the past. Perhaps he will even ask the Skywalker's boy to talk about how he met with General Kenobi. But it will be in the future. And now he will get rid of the kriffing chip and finally become free from the empire and the past. He will become a Cody again and, if necessary, will again stand shoulder to shoulder with Rex, as he did many years ago. He will never be alone again.

Penelope can’t stop staring.

She has tried her best to for the better part of the last thirty minutes now, but every time she re-focuses her gaze onto something else-- anything else-- her eyes can’t help but wander back towards that yellow sweater. The pristine woolen yellow sweater that lacks the last six years of rips and stains that it’s clone has come to bear.

The sweater that still belongs to Josie Saltzman.

And, of course, the alcohol isn’t helping either.

Even though Penelope had performed a sobering spell before leaving Hope’s dorm room and heading off to her classes, she can still feel its lingering effects on her overall inhibitions and self-control…

Or, better yet, lack thereof.

She knows she shouldn’t stare. It’s a rookie mistake, not to mention, also dead give away that something isn’t quite right with her.

But, then again, how can she not?

It’s all so surreal. The classroom. The students. Even Dr. Bridges standing in the front of the blackboard, droning on about the history of secret covens within colonial America. Penelope’s been here before and yet… she hasn’t.

At least not in this version of reality.

By now Penelope should be en route to Belgium, under the guise of attending some hard to pronounce, witches only boarding school and not sitting here, in class. She should be in the process of tracking down Caroline and further pouring herself into any and all ancient texts that contain any reference whatsoever of the merge.

But she’s not.

Because this time around, leaving isn’t an option. Not without Josie safely by her side.

Penelope lets out a small sigh as she runs her hands through her hair and tucks a few loose strands behind her ears. She pulls her eyes away once again from the yellow sweater and glances over at the relic of a clock hanging above the classroom doorway.

Only fifteen more minutes to go.

Fifteen more minutes before she can get another brief respite from the day-to-day mundanity that is school.

God, how Penelope hasn’t missed this part. The pure and utter boredom of sitting around, hour after hour, day after day, pretending to listen to trivial pieces of useless knowledge that bear little to no importance in the world outside of the Salvatore School.

Who the hell cares about knowing all of the names of the witches who founded the Oakwood Coven? Or which species of newts can be found in the eastern woods of Romania?

No one. That’s the real, harsh truth. Not one single, fucking, soul.

Nothing that Penelope learned during her first go-around at Salvatore had prepared her for what Hope and she were forced to encounter. Especially given that Alaric and the rest of the teachers operated under the asinine belief that teenagers had no need to learn defensive magic.

Thank god for Caroline. If it hadn’t been for her and her brutal, seven days a week, training regime, Penelope wouldn’t have even lasted the first six months within the real world. Or, better yet, had the foresight to use the morsus curse when fighting for her life against…

Penelope’s eyes wander back yet again towards Josie as her hand drifts up to trace her now non-existing scar.

“Alright, folks. Enough on the lunar cycle for today. Let’s wrap things up a little bit early, shall we?” Dr. Bridges announces from the front of the classroom. “Remember, we will be discussing chapter 4 tomorrow of the Liechtenstein text, so please make sure you’ve read it.”

The sudden sounds of textbooks shutting and chairs scraping against the wooden floor snaps Penelope out of her thoughts and back into the reality of the moment. She lets out another sigh, this time accompanied by a crack of her neck.

“Can you get any more stalkerish, Satan?” Lizzie says, drawing the attention of those few students who have yet to leave the room as she does.

“Fuck me,” Penelope mutters under her breath and shuts her eyes, taking the briefest of moments to collect herself.

Liz.

No. She doesn’t go by Liz. Not yet at least. The shorter, more mature version comes later. After their first, real-world encounter with one another.

It had been around the time of Hope’s 20th birthday. They had been camped out in a small town near Vienna for well over four months tracking a dead-end lead when the blonde-haired girl had shown up. At first, Penelope thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. That it was just an odd coincidence and nothing more. Austria was chock-full of icy blondes with piercing blue eyes.

But then the girl approached Penelope in the darkened back corner of the local pub and simply uttered the phrase “Hello, Satan” and all lingering doubts instantly dissipated.

It was indeed Lizzie Saltzman. Or, as she had re-introduced herself as “Liz” because Lizzie was someone who frankly didn’t exist anymore. Not after all that, she had borne witness to in the events of the past few years.

Liz had sweet-talked her way into snagging the two of them a bottle of Bulliet from the bartender, which Penelope could only fathom the price tag given the scarce rarity of non-local spirits, and the two proceeded to drink as they talked for what seemed like a lifetime. It was the first-- and sadly only-- honest conversation that Penelope had ever had with the girl that once had wished she had never existed.

As they drank, Liz had filled Penelope in on what had transpired post the Triad invasion and the irreversible side effects that the tainted bullet had had on Josie. She somehow managed to recounter the horrific events one by one, devoid of any signs of real emotion whatsoever, except for the noticeable unsteadiness of her hand every time she brought her glass up to her lips and took another sip. And Penelope sat there and did nothing more but listened. There had been a part of her that was dying to unleash her mountain of unanswered questions beyond the blonde, but somehow she sensed deep down inside that this wasn’t the time.

That Liz just needed to talk.

It wasn’t until they were 3/4th of the way through the bottle, did Liz work up the nerve to ask about Hope. The question came so buried within their conversation that at first, Penelope thought it was a mistake. Merely her tipsy subconscious playing tricks on her. But Liz asked again. This time as clear as day.

And Penelope couldn’t help but revel in the way that Liz’s face lit up as their conversation turned towards Hope. Liz seemingly wanted to know every last detail about the tribrid and yet, all the while still tried to keep some of her emotional cards close to her vest. But it didn’t matter. Penelope could read right through her anyway. There was a deeper reason for Liz’s sudden curiosity. One that Penelope, unfortunately, knew all a little too well. It was the same exact curiosity that had plagued her ever since the moment she left the Salvatore School. The one fueled by late-night thoughts and the endless “what if” scenarios that left unchecked could drive a person insane.

So, Penelope took a risk. A calculated risk, but a risk nonetheless. With a long sip of whiskey, she looked Liz dead in the eyes and revealed to her that Hope was madly in love with her.

Without missing a beat, Liz smiled back and responded that the feeling was more than mutual… in fact, it had been for most of her life.

The conversation abruptly ended soon after those words with Liz being suddenly pulled away by a phone call and then rushed goodbye. There had been a promise made that she would be in touch shortly for yet another round of drinks and late-night confessions, but unfortunately, it never happened.

The news of Liz’s death came just a few weeks later. It had been on the tip of Penelope’s tongue a million and one times to let Hope know about the rogue encounter, but she could never find the right moment to do so.

“Uh… Eww. No thanks.”

Penelope opens her eyes, allowing herself to take in the view of Lizzie Saltzman standing before her. A set of icy blue daggers stare right back along with the all too familiar arms folded across the chest stance that all but screams ‘I’m openly judging you’.

It’s classic Lizzie. And God is it a bittersweet sight for sore eyes.

The slightest hint of all-knowing smirk slide across Penelope’s lips. “Hello, Saltzman.”

“I’ve told you a thousand times already. Leave my sister alone. Got it?”

But Penelope doesn’t respond. Instead, she stands up from her desk and goes about packing up her belongings, never once letting the smirk drop from her face. It’s a deliberate move and one that Penelope more than knows will elicit the type of reaction that she needs in order to move the game along.

“Did you hear me?” Lizzie huffs out, slightly more impatient than before.

Penelope still doesn’t bite. She maintains her composure as she pushes her desk chair in and then turns to fully face Lizzie head-on, locking her eyes in on the blonde. A momentary silence falls between the two of them as Penelope continues to smirk and watch as Lizzie fights against the ever-growing discomfort.

“What?” Lizzie growls. She pulls her eyes away, pretending to glance at the ambient chatter coming from the nearby hallway, not able to withstand another second more of Penelope’s unsettling gaze.

“Quick question for you… Why’d you let Roman escort Hope last night?”

Lizzie blinks and shakes her head in slight confusion. “Huh?”

“At the pageant. You had the choice to escort Hope yourself after Landon was a no show. And yet you decided to let Roman step in instead? Why? You practically bent over backward just to ensure that Hope won. Why not be the one by her side?”

“I… I didn’t… How did you…” Lizzie grasps at words, trying her best not to appear too thrown off guard.

“If I were you, I would’ve gone for it,” Penelope replies with a shrug. “Nothing wins a girl over more than being there when she needs you most.”

Penelope throws in a playful wink for added measure as Lizzie continues to search for something-- anything-- to say in response. But all she can do is stand there, staring back at Penelope in complete and utter shock.

“See you around, Saltzman.”

And with that, Penelope up and walks out of the classroom as her smirk grows even wider than before.

“Penelope! Wait!”

Penelope stops dead in her tracks as the sound of Josie’s voice echoes out from behind her. She’s been wandering the downstairs hallways now for the better part of the last hour, allowing herself to just get lost within the steady stream of Salvatore students. Sure, it’s not the most productive use of time, but it doesn’t matter. After the unexpected face-to-face with Lizzie, Penelope more than needs the space to sort through the ever-growing tidal wave of conflicting feelings brewing deep within the far depths of her mind.

Penelope slowly turns around and instantly spots Josie battling her way against the dense sea of uniform-clad teens. “Hey.”

“Hi,” Josie responds a bit out of breath as she breaks through the last wave of students and joins Penelope. “I’ve been looking all over for you.”

“You have?”

“Of course I have. I’ve been trying to find you ever since the end of Medieval History… How on earth did you know that?”

“Know what?” Penelope responds slightly confused.

Josie gives a quick scan of the passing crowd for any signs of big ears and then grabs Penelope by the arm and pulls her into a nearby nook. “That Lizzie secretly likes Hope.”

Penelope can’t help but let a harsh chuckle slip out. Of course, Josie had overheard the exchange. She’s always has a tab on Lizzie whenever they’re together. Just like a mom of an overly mischievous toddler. One eye on them at all times, holding their breath and waiting for the next tantrum.

And it’s this-- Josie’s Achilles heel== that will lead to her ultimate downfall.

“What’s so funny?”

“Nothing. It’s just…” Penelope trails off, stopping herself before she inadvertently opens Pandora’s Box. “I guessed. That’s all.”

“You’re lying.”

“No, I…”

“Enough with the bullshit, Penelope. You and I both know you’re good, but you’re not that good,” Josie fires back with an underlying bite to her voice. “Tell me the truth. How’d you know?”

Penelope runs her hands through her hair and exhales a breath of air that she didn’t even realize she was holding onto.

The truth.

Two words that are so simple yet so powerful. For Penelope, telling the truth has never been the easiest route when it comes to Josie. No. How could it be? Speaking the truth meaning running the risk of inflicting long-lasting pain. The kind of pain that leaves invisible scars along the soul.

“Okay. You’re right. It’s wasn’t just a guess,” Penelope responds. “It was also Hope.”

“Hope?” Josie quirks an eyebrow at the mention of the tribrid’s name. “What about Hope?”

“She’s the one who told me about Lizzie. Apparently whatever went down between the two of them during the Miss Mystic Falls pageant opened her eyes to things that up until this point she’s been blind to… Or something like that.”

“And she told you this?”

“Don’t look so surprised, Jojo,” Penelope says channeling her old 16-year=old self for a brief moment. “I make quite the good confidant. You of all people should know that… I still haven’t told a soul about how you’ve got a secret kink for handcu--”

But before Penelope can finish her sentence, Josie clamps her hand down over Penelope’s mouth as her cheeks ignite with a noticeable reddish hue. “Enough… I get it… So Hope feels the same way?”

“Without a doubt.”

“Interesting…” Josie replies. “I always had a hunch that there was something there between the two of them… Too bad Lizzie will never act on it.”

“How are you so sure?”

Josie shrugs. “It’s Lizzie. No one knows her better than I do.”

“Then I guess I’m just going to have to push Furball to make the first move.”

Now it’s Josie’s turn to chuckle but unlike Penelope’s, it’s filled with nothing but an abundance of warmth. And Penelope can’t help but smile at the way that Josie’s nose crinkles up as she does.

God, how she has missed this.

“Okay. Now it’s my turn… What’s so funny?” Penelope asks.

“You.”

“Me?”

“Yes,” Josie matches Penelope’s smile. “I can’t put my finger on it, but… I don’t know… You just seem different somehow.”

“Different in a good way?”

Josie bites down on her lip as she gives a small nod. “Yeah. I think so.”

“Well maybe I’m trying to turn over a new leaf,” Penelope responds nonchalantly.

Josie reaches forward and ever-so-gently tucks a loose curl of Penelope’s raven hair behind her ear and then lets her fingertips linger for a few moments upon Penelope’s cheek. Penelope feels her breath slightly catch as she fights the urge to fully lean into it. “Promise me something?”

“Anything,” Penelope eagerly replies.

“No more lies, okay?”

And instantaneously, Penelope’s whole body stiffness. No. Not that… Anything but that one request. It’s the one promise she can’t uphold.

Penelope swallows down the dry lump of emotions bubbling up within her throat and then ever so subtly moves her hand behind her back and crosses her fingers. “Okay.”

“Good.” Josie smiles in return. Penelope starts to open her mouth to say something-- anything-- more, but before she can manage to utter a single word, the bell rings.

“Shit. I’m going to be late to History of Ruins,” Josie says as a look of panic sweeps across her face. “Let's talk later… Maybe during study hall?”

“Sure.” And once again, Penelope finds herself utterly frozen, unable to do anything more than watch as Josie disappears from sight.

God, is this going to be harder than she ever imagined.

Far-Flung Hopes, ch2

Summary: The force had two children, six thousand years apart. Dooku imagined it was about time these children meet, whether they liked it or not. ———- The fic where Revan possesses Anakin.

Explaining what happened to Anakin to the 501st and the 212th was more than a little awkward, but it had to be done. Revan’s arrival was more than a little confusing. Especially because Obi-Wan was being so welcoming to someone who had the “Darth” title.

Cody had explained it to most of the men while Rex and Ahsoka showed Revan where they were staying. “This is General Skywalker’s room.” Rex opened the door, watching nervously as Revan peeked inside. “It should have everything you need.”

“Skywalker is his name? Well it certainly makes sense.” Revan stated, picking up one of Anakin’s tools from a sad little desk pressed up against a wall.

“How so?” Ahsoka asked, still suspicious of the Dark Lord.

“His body wouldn’t have survived the ceremony if he wasn’t a child of the Force like I am. The name Skywalker just makes sense for the Force.” Revan answered, the others almost able to hear the smile in their voice. “The Force is either incredibly subtle or incredibly obvious about those things.”

“Right.” Rex acknowledged, uneasy with the comfortability Revan seemed to have in his General’s quarters. “If you need anything, there should be a button near the door, and someone, most likely myself, will come to assist.”

“If it’s all the same to you, Captain, I’d like for you to stay a moment, just for some questions.” Revan stated, setting the tool down and turning back to Ahsoka and Rex.

“If you think I’m going to leave him alone with you --” Ahsoka growled before stopping herself at the sight of Revan handing Rex their lightsabers. Rex took them, looking into the eyes-holes of Revan’s masked confusedly.

Revan just looked between the two. “Now he holds my life in his hands. May I ask him questions now?”

Ahsoka seemed conflicted before she huffed and turned to leave, dragging her feet as she did. As soon as she turned the corner, out of their sight, Revan turned to Rex, signaling the Captain to come in the room. Rex had to suppress a slight jump when the door closed behind him. “You seem quite a deal more experienced than your fellow troopers, Captain. I hope to learn what I can from you.” Revan said, ignoring the anxiety they could clearly see in Rex.

“Thank you, General.” Rex replied instinctually.

“You can relax, Captain.” Revan stated as they sat on their bed. “Sit if it helps.” Rex hesitated for a second before he sat across Revan at Anakin’s desk. “There you go, Captain. Now, if you don’t mind my asking, what is Skywalker’s relation with the Jedi on-board?”

Rex cleared his throat before answering. “Commander Tano is the General’s Padawan and General Kenobi is General Skywalker’s former Master.”

Revan cocked their head to the side, perhaps confused. “Is that the entire extent of Kenobi and Skywalker’s relationship?”

Rex really wished he could see Skywalker’s eyes from behind the mask because looking into black holes was really unnerving. “They are closer and more familiar than most Masters and Padawan, but I don’t know the extent of their relationship.”

“Yes, that sounds quite a bit more like what I sensed.” Revan nodded at Rex’s second explanation. “Now, which troopers are more familiar with Skywalker?”

“That would be the Torrent Company, sir.” Rex explained. “Though, if you want specific names…” Rex suggested, trailing off nervously.

“I would appreciate names, and perhaps your descriptions, thank you.” Revan answered, completely engrossed in what Rex would tell them.

“Well Tup is the youngest of Torrent and is quite clever for a rookie.” Rex began, not sure what to say. “He actually helped to capture a traitor Jedi when General Skywalker was brought to Coruscant. Echo and Fives are batchmates, so they’re pretty connected at the hip. Fives has a bit of a strong personality, but he’s easy to agree with. Echo is a bit quieter, but when he’s loud, he’s loud . He’s always observing, so he has a better grasp on subtly than Fives.” Rex almost smiled, relaxing as he spoke about his brothers. Our medic is Kix. And it doesn’t matter what your rank is, if you’re injured, he’s in charge. He hates it when people try to hide their injuries, and he will most certainly find out if you try it. Hardcase is a bit of a wildcard, but one consistency that he has is that he’s completely dedicated to his vode.”

“Vode? Brothers?” Revan’s interest was completely held by Rex by now.

Rex almost blanched at his minor slip-up. “We, as clones, consider ourselves brothers. We grow together, we fight together, and we die together. I don’t know another way to consider us.”

“A nice sentiment.” Revan sounded like they meant it. “I look forward to meeting them. But, for now, could you perhaps, send Kenobi here?”

Rex nodded, standing from his seat and handing the lightsabers back. “Of course, sir.”

Revan only took one of the lightsabers back, leaving the red-bladed weapon in Rex’s hand. “Keep it. I don’t think anyone would trust me very much with that blade anyway.”

“Sir!” Rex responded the only way he knew how.

Revan chuckled at Rex’s tone. “Relax. I trust you’re more than capable to handle it if you need to and if I need it, I will let you know.” Rex nodded and left, gripping the lightsaber tightly even as Revan placed their lightsaber onto the desk behind Rex.

Revan waited for not a minute before Obi-Wan knocked on his door, an anxiousness to his presence. “Revan?” Kenobi called through the door. “Rex said you wanted to see me?”

Revan opened the door with the Force, allowing Kenobi to come in at his own pace. “I do, yes.”

The door closed behind Kenobi, who was a bit more relaxed than Rex had been. “What’s wrong?”

Revan suddenly sprang up, pinning Obi-Wan’s wrists to the door behind him. “I just wanted to just how close it is that you are to my host.”

Obi-Wan quickly changed their positions, pinning Revan right where he had been pinned just a second before. He gingerly kissed Revan’s neck, earning himself a surprised gasp. “Very close.” Kenobi suddenly backed away, tosing Revan for a second loop in under a minute. “But you are not him. So I’m not very close with you just quite yet.”

“Of course.” Revan said breathlessly, moving out of Obi-Wan’s way as he left the room. Alone in their half-brother’s room, Revan focused on the Force, talking to the man they knew was listening and watching. “Alright, brother. It appears we have a common interest.”

THE SACRED TEXTS!!! EPISODE 3

I just finished the 3rd season of Clone Wars(2008) and I have Thoughts!

s3 is typically where I’ve seen ppl saying Clone Wars gets gud but, for the first half of the season, I was pretty skeptical. Until ~ e11 the season’s dedicated to filling in holes from the earlier seasons which, frankly, didn’t really need to be filled? Like: I’m not really sure WHO, in the audience, would be sitting around wondering “gee, I wonder what’s going on with Mandalore’s trade-policy during all of this?”?? Or “was a Republic Army sent to help Ryloth when it was first invaded, and what happened to it?”??? And most of this not only felt pretty unnecessary, but was also pretty Meh (:T There were good bits! Like, I didnt ACTL mind the Ryloth ep, and it acts as a declaration of sorts that it’s now both open-season on Jedi(yeah, technically Kit Fisto’s ex-padawan Vebb died in Lair of Grievous, but he was very much An Outlier), and more broadly open-season on named&faced humanoid characters.

To give an example: not ONLY does Domino Squad from Rookies in s1 get a fleshing-out backstory(which is... very Pat and derivative and convenient, but the characterization is ok given they’ve only got one 22min ep to do it in. & I liked 99′s whole role as basically surrogate dad to all the other clones), but pretty much ALL of them, I think, end up getting killed off during the season? Like I said it’s a clear statement they want to break with the past while building on the “hey fans: CLONES ARE PEOPLE! THEIR SITUATION IN THIS WAR IS MONSTROUS!!” message the series has been soft-peddling from the beginning, but I feel like they didnt really commit to it enough. Like: IF they had stuck with the Domino survivors throughout the season, if we’d gotten to see them in episode after episode, gotten to know them better alongside the other members of Rex’s ARC battalion, gotten to see them face dangers and survive them, only to watch, agonized, as they, and the rest of the Battalion vets, slowly get picked off in the increasingly dangerous missions of the second half of the season, then that would have made the message MUCH more effective, AND made the Citadel and Padawan Lost arcs much more tense.

And really all of the impactful deaths of the season sort of feel like that. Like: we get one episode to know Mina Bonteri(a human, of course) and her family before she’s killed off(though i did Dig how unceremonious and unsentimental it was; that really got across the stakes involved and the sorts of scumbags Amidala, and the audience, are dealing with). We get even less time with the Jedi killed by Oppress; a few seconds at most(and btw it’s kind of HILARIOUS how he just... bulls in there and wrecks em like it’s nothing, after two seasons of ep after ep of uneventful cat-and-mouse. Of course that’s undermined by him&Ventriss, then, utterly failing to be successful against Dooku, purely because the plot demands it |:T) Same with Master Piell. Ziro we know much better, but he was also a fairly annoying caricature and his final eps went out of their way to use him to introduce EVEN MORE annoying caricatures so, while his getting gunned down is successful in showing violence and violent death as sudden, unsentimental, and pathetic rather than heroic and worthy, we dont really care. And that’s further undercut, pretty seriously, by his being a caricature; pathos is hard to pull off with an object of laughter/scorn as it risks just making their suffering funny to the audience(which... is the OPPOSITE of what you want to accomplish). This isnt helped by having the Jedi who find him basically shrugging at his death before racing into a Cool Fight. The “Force Wielders” in the Mortis arc suffer from the same problems(and also: Force Dualism&”The Chosen One” Talk: BLEAGH!). The only one of these they manage to get right, to me, is Kalifa’s death in Padawan Lost which, due to us getting more time to see her sitch and hear her&the other younglings talk about it, genuinely ends up having an emotional impact(if still feeling super-convenient and a bit improbable)((also I love the inclusion of a predator ep, even if they’re cheap dime-story predators)).

The same goes for all the non-death falls and endangerments. The corruption of the Mandalorian Prime Minister falls flat because we barely know him, and he’s never been portrayed as sympathetic or, for that matter, as anything other than a factotum. The only Pantoran we know in Sphere of Influence is Senator Chuchi, and more than half the episode is dedicated to the Prime Minister, his Son, and his(interchangeable) daughters(and we never see any of these characters again in the season); the ep comes off as nothing more than an excuse to reference Greedo(and Im annoyed by him speaking common all of a sudden. Who watching CW would have a problem with subtitles?).

BUT! They’re trying!! They’re moving in the right direction!!! I’m happy about this ^v^ And the later half of the season, while I have my problems with certain episodes, and the continued non-human stereotypes, and the convenient writing, and the not-great(tho getting better!) dialogue, is actually kind of entertaining, and attention-bearing. Arc Troopers, the 2nd ep of the season, is Solid! The Mortis arc is good, overall! The Citadel and Padawan Lost arcs are Compelling!! I like the Witches of Dathomiir, even if their Arc is “Meh” because the series IMMEDIATELY undercuts their cool concept(aside from the laser-bows which are LEGITIMATELY Stupid. I’m sorry; I will not argue over this they’re Dum) by having their plans, and all the implication towards deep plots&cunning manipulation, turn out to be empty and fruitless(ie, Dooku totally should have been terribly wounded by all this, which would have also been cool re: Sidious, as it’d imply THAT WAS HIS PLAN ALL ALONG! TO WEAKEN THE GROWING POWER OF HIS APPRENTICE AND DRAG THE WAR OUT EVEN LONGER!!) Also: the Witches, rather than being “magic users” drawing from the “unique power” of their ~evil planet~(a swamp, of course, following long-established Magic the Gathering tradition u_u) should have just totally been a non-Sith(possibly Pre-Jedi) sect of Dark Side Force Users. I really like the idea of Non-Jedi/Non-Sith(since they’re literally just two sides of the SAME tradition; the Sith are literally Jedi Heretics) Force Traditions being out there in the galaxy, and this was a good chance to build on that which I felt they didnt do enough with, and hope they WILL do more with in future(I especially like the ideas of force-attuned poison? Like what if they could “poison” or “curse” people THROUGH the Force? That would be sweet as hell :3).

Another improvement is in the action in this season. It’s not at a level I’d call “thrilling” or anything, but it feels much less like stiff, rote, weightless FLUFF than it has in the two previous seasons. Frankly I think a lot of this is just their engine and how ppls joints just sort of SNAP into position during fights, and also the excessive acrobatics of the prequel-style, both of which makes it feel unnatural, predetermined, and performative rather than deadly and vital(like excessively practiced and robotically acted choreography, basically). But, having said that, you see ppl make mistakes, you see consequences FOR those mistakes, and thus there is SOME sense of danger and weight to it that makes it more compelling than it has been in the past, and this should be praised uwu

And I like that the Politics are a lot clearer and more forefronted in this season than previously! While the Corruption Arc on Mandalore did feel rather hollow, rushed, and After-School-Specially(and, I DEEPLY resent its peddling of offensive and baseless anti-Ophidian tropes >:( ), it’s core message abt the dangers of profiteering and the corrupting influence of profit-seeking(ie Capitalism) on politics and society is a good one and clearly delivered. The Amidala episodes in this season Knock it out of the park consistently, and especially on their messaging ^v^ ^v^ Also, I DIDNT MIND the very fillery C3PO and R2 ep! Yes: it was essentially a waste of an episode since Bane was working for the Hutts to spring Ziro in s1′s Hostage Crisis & there’s basically NO WAY they wouldnt have been able to provide him with a set of plans for the Senate building(and the prison, for that matter), but WHATEVER: it was Kind Of Fun and I like seeing those two be an old bickering married couple and C3PO freak out over getting praised; IT WAS FINE!

So, while there werent any standout ep that I REALLY ENJOYED like Trespass in s1 and R2 Come Home in s2, and I very much didn’t like the 1st half of the season, I think I do have to concede that s3 is An Improvement, overall. I’m actually a bit excited over moving on to s4, given the upward trajectory this season ends on quality-wise owo

Oh: and the Ahsoka redesign? Neat uwu uwu(if untentionally Hilarious since they havent been changing her model over time so she just... grows three feet and bulks out in, like, a single night, presumably. Togruta Puberty must be HELL :p :p :p)

fit for the 439th

a present (2.8k) for @mandowo, because i love all of the 439th so much and love writing them (and misi!!), especially when they have to deal with a little goblin child named manae elsheva who does what she wants, including trying to sneak onto the mercurial. happy birthday💜

The ship was much larger than she had expected, but that just made the little orange Twi’lek more determined than ever to get on board. It wasn’t fair that their irn'era Amaranth had been able to go so many times, and when she’d asked the troopers who’d come to eat at the Rose Lantern, they’d just laughed and patted the top of her head and said, “Maybe someday, ad’ika.”

Well. Manae Elsheva had decided that ‘someday’ was today.

Behind her, her older brother Dohan shivered at the sight of so many big ships – Jedi cruisers, they’d called them – and all the clone troopers marching smartly around. Manae thought they looked very impressive, but she was ‘specially watching out for the ones with bright purple paint. They were irn'era Ama’s friends, and though Manae couldn’t remember their exact number right now, all she’d needed to remember was the color, and what ship they came off of.

Dohan tugged her hand so that she turned around. He shivered again, his eyes big and scared, as he whispered, “We should go back, Manae. We shouldn’t be here…”

She wrinkled her nose at him and signed, You’re chickening out?

“So what if I am? We’re not supposed to be here, and besides, they’d already promised that they’d let us visit soon!”

Chicken! I’m getting on that ship.

“You’re gonna get in trouble-”

No, I won’t! We know them. She was absolutely confident that they just had to find their friends, and they’d be allowed on the ship, but Dohan was absolutely not convinced.

“We know some of them, Manae.” Her big brother’s eyes darted back and forth across the massive shipyard, the troopers walking across it every which way. Manae wasn’t frightened of it – she was thrilled even just watching the action. She’d never been off planet before, and the troopers who came by the restaurant always had such good stories about the places they’d been – she twisted her nose up, thinking.

No. No, sometimes the stories were sad, but the troopers were always so nice to her. She wanted to see them, and that’s what she was gonna do.

Besides, she had tell Shocker that Henal hadn’t bothered her after she’d punched him right on the nose, like he’d had shown her! Mama hadn’t been too happy when she’d come back home with a triumphant grin and sore knuckles, and maybe a little bit of the bully’s blood on her shirt, but it’d made him stop pulling on her lekku, so ha!

She knew that the 439th were on break now, because irn’era Ama’s friend Jazz had been really happy for the past week, and then been really really happy yesterday, because Null had shown up at the restaurant with some flowers for Jazz (they weren’t real, Manae had snuck over when they’d gotten distracted and investigated the petals. Fabric – but still really pretty).

Anyways. They’d seen her home, and now she wanted to see theirs.

The ship was painted in bright purples stripes, loud and proud and brighter than any of the other ships docked at the yard. She pointed at it excitedly from their position on top of the huge dish-like shipyard – there were other people walking back and forth on the walkway, too, but most of the adults paid no attention to the excitement down below.

She wrinkled her nose again. Grownups.

Manae stood up and started confidently towards the gate, and it took her a good minute to realize Dohan wasn’t following her, like he’d promised he would.

Hey! Come on!

He shook his head, his face dark and angry, and folded his arms, sitting on the bench like a big baby. Manae groaned in frustration, We’ve been planning this for weeks and you’re going to give up now??

He nodded once, firmly, and Manae sniffed in annoyance. Fine! I’ll go by myself!

Some of the purple-painted troopers were walking towards the exit, and Manae stopped, watching them, and all of a sudden her bravery and bravado gone. She thought she would have known some of the troopers, there’d been so many at the Lantern… She fidgeted as they came closer, laughing and smacking each other on the shoulders – one of them had a big huge animal that was the only one who noticed her, and Manae’s bravery turned to full on timidness, because it was big and had lots of teeth and legs… but its eyes were sweet as it watched her watch them.

Plus, if it was with them, it couldn’t be mean. Her shoulders relaxed, and she waved shyly at it.

The animal nudged one of the trooper’s hands, got her attention, and wagged its tail when it looked in Manae’s direction again. The trooper – she stared hard at her armor, but she didn’t recognize it – looked over and saw the little Twi’lek girl watching them curiously from beyond the entrance to their world.

“Hey there, little one! Are you lost?”

Manae shook her head as the trooper came close and knelt in front of her. I’m not lost! I wanted to… and she got shy again, and the trooper smiled at her so nicely that she felt brave enough to go on, I was sitting up there with my brother and I wanted to get a closer look at the ships and stuff, that’s all.

“Ah! You wanted a closer look at the action, huh?”

She nodded, and the trooper grinned and held out a hand. “My name’s Ampersand, what’s yours?”

Manae!

Ampersand regarded her carefully, and then raised one of her eyebrows and gave Manae a crooked smile, “You an Elsheva, by chance?”

She beamed, and Ampersand’s smile grew bigger, too. “Thought so! What’re you doing all the way up here-” and then her eyes focused on walkways behind her, scanning for the rest of her family, and Ampersand’s eyebrows knit together in worry when she couldn’t see Ama, or Mama, or anyone else. “Where’s-”

Manae jumped up and started signing to get Ampersand’s attention so that she wouldn’t get Manae in trouble, I wanted to see your ship! The big one, there, and she pointed over the group’s shoulders, hoping she wouldn’t ask again.

One of the troopers, with long curly dark hair and lots of piercings and tattoos, glanced at the ship, and then back at Manae. They smiled and started to sign, You want a tour?

Any excitement she’d had at the idea of a tour of their home was immediately taken over by the excitement of seeing them sign. She jumped again and signed, Are you Rang? I asked a bunch of troopers who all signed mostly and they said Rang, and Wesk, and Nadi, and some other people, too-

The trooper was laughing, and so was the person next to them. No, no, I’m not Rang. I’m too pleasant to be him. I’m Wesk!

The trooper who was in charge of watching over the animal – who wasn’t leashed, and was just patiently sitting by their feet – said, “I’m Half-Arc, and this is Trooper. I gotta get it to the training facility, so I’ll have to bow out of the tour.” He smiled at Manae as Trooper sniffed near her, and said, “Have fun, okay? Don’t get into too much trouble without me.”

The other troopers nodded and said their goodbyes, and then Manae took Wesk’s hand in one hand, and Ampersand’s in the other, and tugged them back towards their ship as hard as she could.

Ampersand set down her tools and as she was cleaning up, Wesk let Manae examine the freshly inked tattoo on their arm.

Manae was very careful not to touch it, because it looked like it had hurt – but Wesk hadn’t even flinched, not even a little bit, and that had been very impressive. It was much smaller than any of the tattoos they already had, just a little bit of shading on one they’d already had, but Manae had promised not to freak out if they let her sit and watch.

“What’d you think about that, kid?” Amp asked, smiling as she took off her gloves and discarded the used needle. “Pretty cool, right?”

Manae’s hand hovered over Wesk’s arm – she was sitting on their lap now, their arm held out so she could see it better – and she bent a little closer to examine it. The ink was much darker than the rest of the tattoos that she had seen, the skin a little puffy and stretched, but Wesk and Ampersand looked proud of their work.

You stabbed them a bunch of times with a needle! And it didn’t even look like it hurt! She finally signed, absolutely delighted. You were very brave! She told them sincerely, and Wesk gave her a big grin and a two-finger salute.

She laughed and returned it, and then Ampersand did it, and she saluted Ampersand, and they were all laughing when the doors to the medbay slid open and two more people walked in. Wesk and Ampersand nodded to them, still biting down on their laughter, as a Jedi and another trooper – with fancier, bigger amour than the others – walked in.

As soon as she saw who it was, she was sliding off of Wesk’s lap and running full-tilt towards them, skidding to a halt just before the amused angel and the quiet man next to him.

The General – Misi! – recognized her as soon as he saw her, and he laughed in delight, and Manae suddenly remembered Ama telling her that Misi was an angel and when he laughed he glowed, just a little bit, and she beamed at him as he came over and squatted in front of her.

“Hmm. I don’t know about you, Chyth,” he said, talking to the man standing behind him, “but it looks to me like rookies are getting shorter and shorter every day.” He winked at her, and she pressed her hands to her mouth to hold back a laugh.

“I should say so,” the Captain – Chyth – said with a straight face, looking down at her – but when she gave him a shy smile, the corners of Chyth’s mouth twitched up in amusement. “She’ll be good for sneaking missions, I suspect.”

Manae’s chest puffed up in pride at that. That’s right! Dohan and I wanted to see where you all lived but he chickened out and went back home but since I’m much braver than him I went ahead and did it anyways!

This time, the Captain gave her a real smile. Misi laughed as he watched her hands fly and then he patted the top of her head fondly. “Well, welcome to the Mercurial, Manae Elsheva. You’ve been given the grand tour of our ship, huh? What do you think?”

I liked the place with all the littler ships! And Wesk also showed me where they and Ampersand do their tattoos, and how they do it, and I also liked the big rooms where you all sleep! She tapped her chin, thinking a bit more.

He was still grinning, and shifted so that he was sitting cross-legged in front of her, so she sat down, too. Ama had told her Jedi were much less serious than people always said they were, but Manae thought she was just thinking of Misi when she said that. She didn’t really believe they’d had a food fight when Ama had gone on her assignment with them. Wesk and Ampersand leaned against the walls as he asked, “You liked all those bunk beds?”

She nodded fiercely, It’s like a sleepover every night!

“That’s one way to put it,” Ampersand said cheerfully. “Except imagine that it’s just your siblings, and some of them snore really, really loudly.”

Wesk made a face, sniffed and turned their nose up at that.

As Manae laughed, Misi looked her in the eyes and asked the dreaded, inevitable question:

“Manae, do your moms know you’re up here?”

She suddenly remembered that Jedi could read minds, and her face twisted a little bit, and he laughed. “Yeah, I don’t think they do, huh?”

She considered trying to lie again, but then sighed and shook her head.

“Well, we just gotta let them know you’re okay, alright? I bet they’re worried.”

Dohan probably told them where I was, so maybe we don’t have to do that?

He tapped his finger on his chin for a moment before shaking his head, “You know me! I’m all about accountability, and properly reporting, and responsibility and all that. We’ll just give Ama a quick call, okay?”

And Manae, who could definitely feel the looming sentence of grounded for life over her head, drooped a little as she signed Okay, fine. They’re gonna be mad, though… she warned him, but he just smiled again and nodded in thanks. Manae took Wesk and Ampersand’s hands, watching as her adventure started to come to a close.

As Misi pulled out his holo, they started swinging Manae back and forth, their big strong hands gently holding onto hers. As she laughed in delight, she could hear irn'era answer the holo with: “Hey – Misi – I can’t talk right now, Manae’s missing and we don’t know-”

Manae could also hear her moms in the background of the call, and her gut twisted in guilt – they sounded mad, and scared, and she didn’t like it when her moms were scared.

“She’s up here with us, Amaranth,” Misi said simply, and irn'era blinked before the holo was grabbed out of her hand and there was Mama. “Manae is where?”

Wesk snickered behind their hand, and when Manae looked up at Ampersand, the big trooper just grinned and winked at her. Misi straightened and nodded, “She’s on the Mercurial, we have her here-” and before Manae could shake her head, Misi was angling the holo to show her mom exactly where she was.

There was a beat of silence, and then Mama exploded in super-fast Ryl, “Manae! Dan fic geo hiko donah, gan go ktei ootay dan fic elan vil Dohan ohk go bee geo ea, dan toyid go fic asary ar elan bo Amaranth, dan fic ar rinkan nolelu? Do ohk cei penisla, I’m coming up there right now-”

Irn'era took back the holo from Mama, who went on ranting and raving, and Manae shrank back a little. Wesk looked down at her and gave her a gentle reassuring smile – which was impressive, because they had a lot of metal piercings and things on their face – and signed, Hey, she’s just worried about you. She’s glad you’re safe, that’s all.

Manae sighed morosely and signed sadly, I’m gonna be grounded for the rest of my life…

Wesk and Ampersand found that very funny, and Ampersand put her hand on Manae’s head – careful to avoid the lekku, just like Manae had told her – and said, “We’ve all been there, ad’ika.”

Manae threw her hands up as irn'era and Misi continued to talk, I’m gonna be a wrinkly old lady with wrinkly old lekku that drag on the FLOOR by the time I’m not in trouble anymore! She dragged her hands down her face and stamped her feet, just pretending to be mad. And her new friends found that even funnier, even though it was one-hundred-thousand percent true.

Misi hung up with her irn'era and turned around, hands on his hips and grinning broadly down at her before he knelt to her level. “Well, you’re a bit of a troublemaker, huh?”

Manae smiled as big and as innocent as she could, and Misi looked up at the quiet man with darker purple paint than the others and said, delighted, “She’s a natural fit for the 439th, huh?”

The quiet serious man, the Captain, gave her a stern look-over and then a short nod. “I’d say so, General. Fits right in with the rest of these chakaar.”

She didn’t know what word he’d said, but it had made every else laugh, so she laughed too, as big as she could, and that just made them laugh harder, and Manae thought that being grounded for two straight months (with extra dish washing duty) had been very well worth it.

Wesk had been right, though – when her moms finally arrived, with a very sheepish Dohan who wouldn’t look her in the eyes, because he’d told on her and gotten her in extra trouble – Mama dropped to her knees and pulled her tight to her chest, babbling things like “Thank goddess you’re safe, I was so scared-” and “You’re going to be washing dishes until you’re fifty, young lady, why in the stars would you try to sneak into a government facility-” while Manae’s other mom gave Misi and his troopers a whole basket full of snacks as thanks.

Ampersand gave an appreciative whistle as she eyed over the treats, and then she winked at Manae in a way that very clearly said You’re welcome back any time, little one.

And Manae gave her a secret grin and a thumbs up, and made plans to visit them again.

Two months wouldn’t be that long. She’d see them all again, and soon!

Nothing would get in the way of that. Not if she could help it.

A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Masking in Photoshop

Several years ago a friend of mine asked me to teach him how masks work in Photoshop. This is my incredibly late response.

We’ll go over the basics of what masks are, what they’re used for and how wielding them properly will take your Photoshop skills to an entirely new level.

What Is a Mask?

Layers are probably the single most important addition to Photoshop since the original version, but layer masks are a close second. I would posit that until you thoroughly understand how and why to use masks, you simply don’t understand the power of Photoshop.

The term “mask” isn’t immediately understandable to someone outside the realm of graphic design. At its simplest definition a mask is a way to apply something to a very specific portion of an image.

There are two primary types of masks: clipping masks and layer masks. These two tools are closely related in concept, but very different in application. Let’s start by discussing layers masks, which are generally what people are referring to when you hear them discuss Photoshop masking.

Layer Masks

A layer mask is something that you apply to a given layer to control the transparency of that layer. Where layer opacity controls the transparency of the entire layer at once, a mask gives you more precise controls over very specific areas. If you want the entire layer to be at 30%, you would lower the opacity, if you want just the left side of a layer to be at 30%, you would use a mask.

When you add a mask to a layer, it covers the entire thing with an invisible grayscale canvas. There are ways to see it that we’ll check out later but just know that as a general rule, applying a mask to a layer won’t cause any immediate visual differences unless you have an active selection at the time.

On this invisible canvas, you can paint white, black or any level of gray in-between. The color that you paint tells Photoshop how opaque to make the pixels at that point. White means 100% opacity and black means 0% opacity.

With this in mind, try to imagine what the mask below would do to a layer:

As you can see, if our mask was all white with the three circles shown above, we would have a completely visible layer where in all the white areas, and spots of transparency in the circles. If we apply this mask to a layer, this is the result:

Clipping Masks

Clipping masks are very similar to layer masks only they use one layer to determine the transparency of another. In this scenario, you stack two layers on top of each other with the bottom being the determining factor of the transparency of the top.

Instead of using black and white values though, clipping masks simply borrow transparency from the layers used to make them, namely the bottom layer. If the bottom layer has some areas that are opaque and some areas that are transparent, a clipping mask will apply these values to the top layer.

This one is hard to explain without an example, but becomes crystal clear when you see it in action. Let’s use the two layers shown below and say that our goal here is to cut or “clip” the wood layer to be in the shape of the letters. Notice that, at this point, the wood is the bottom layer and the text is the top layer.

To achieve the effect that we want, simply swap the position of the layers so that the wood is on the top, then go to the Layers menu at the top of your screen and select “Create Clipping Mask” (Command-Option-G). Voila, we now have the effect we were going for. Where the text layer was opaque, the wood layer is now opaque and where the text layer was transparent, the wood layer is now transparent.

There’s some really interesting functionality here. You can still position and make changes to each of the two layers independently. By dragging around the wood layer, you move the position of the texture inside the bounds of the letters while the letters themselves stay stationary.

Also, you can apply layer effects to the compilation via the bottom layer. For instance, here’s what happens if we select the text layer and add an Inner Shadow.

Clipping masks fun, functional and underrated, but the truth is that layer masks are far more common in every day use. The information above should be enough to get you off and running with clipping masks so from here on out we’ll focus purely on layer mask functionality.

How Do I Make a Layer Mask?

Now that we have a strong grasp of exactly what masks are and how the two different types of masks differ, let’s see how to create and work with a layer mask.

The first thing we need is two layers. I grabbed the two images below from photographers Adrian Durlea and Erik Soderstrom. The shack image is on the bottom and the fire is on the top.

The general idea here is to take some, not all, of the fire and apply it to the shack. The first step is to stack the two images as we see above and set the fire layer’s blending mode to Screen. This will make all of the black pixels transparent, which blends the two images together nicely.

With that one change, this is already a pretty decent image! Let’s say though that we want to only have fire near the door of the shack. To accomplish this, we’ll need to add a mask to the fire layer. Select the fire layer and click the mask icon shown in the image below.

Now, with the mask selected in the layers palette, we grab a soft, black brush and paint out the portions of the fire that we don’t want to see. As we do this, the fire begins to disappear. To bring it back, we simply paint white.

As you can see in the image below, with just a little painting, our fire is now much more centralized to the portion of the image that’s already lit up and therefore looks decently natural.

To see the actual mask, Option-Click (Alt-Click on a PC) on the little mask preview in the layers palette (Shift-click to hide the mask completely). After painting out some of our fire, this brings up the following:

Notice that we’re not just constrained to hard edges. The beauty of masks is that you can do anything you want with them as long as you can pull it off in values of gray. This means you can paint, clone, create and fill selections, copy and paste, and all kinds of other actions you perform on the main canvas.

Why Not Just Erase?

Upon first learning how to use masks, most rookies think the same thing: “I can already do all of this with the eraser tool.” Wrong! In fact, as far as I’m concerned, once you learn to mask, you should literally never pick up the eraser tool again because it tends to be so destructive.

What do I mean by destructive? Think about what happens when you use the eraser tool: it erases pixels. Mind you, it doesn’t hide them for a while until you want them back, it “destroys” the pixels. The changes that you make by deleting portions of a layer are permanent and can’t exactly be tweaked later.

This is simply a horrible way to work. With every new iteration of Photoshop, Adobe gives us more and more ways to make non-destructive edits, meaning those that don’t truly alter the original pixel data. For instance, Filters used to be a permanent and destructive change, if you blurred a layer, it was stuck that way! Now, with Smart Filters, you can always go back and adjust or even delete the blur.

This same concept gave birth to masks many years ago. With a mask, you not only have the ability to make remarkably detailed decisions about the transparency of a layer or group of layers, even better, you have the freedom to go back and refine or scrap those changes at any time. If I had erased my fire in the example above, it would be gone forever and bringing it back would involve importing the layer all over again. However, because I used a mask, all I have to do is fill that mask with white and immediately all of my fire detail returns.

To use the metaphor of an actual mask, imagine that you want to change your appearance for Halloween. You have two options: the first is to undergo plastic surgery to permanently change your face to look like that of a scary creature and the second is to wear a mask. In this scenario, the eraser tool is plastic surgery. It’s simply a bad choice when you’re not sure that you want the changes to be permanent. Go with the mask instead.

Advanced Masking Techniques

The information above is an absolute beginner’s guide to masks. Odds are, if you’ve been using Photoshop for a while, not a single piece of this was news to you. In fact, you may be thinking that masks are so incredibly simple that they barely merit conversation.

However, masking techniques go from simple to wickedly complex really fast. It’s easy enough to paint some broad strokes to erase large portions of an image, but what if you want to do something more complex? For instance, let’s say we want to take the cat below off of its white background.

Furry animals make particularly difficult masking subjects. All of that fine hair detail means making an accurate selection will be time consuming. The Magic Wand or even the Pen Tool are of no use to us here. So how do the pros start with the image above and create a mask like the one below?

If you’re ready to find out, keep reading as we undertake this feat!

Change the Channel

The good news about the cat image is that there is plenty of contrast to work with. The key to making a good mask is finding contrast and knowing how to pull it out. Here we have a fairly dark cat on a bright white background, which means all we have to do is figure out how to leverage our good fortune and convert the contrast already present into a suitable mask.

The first step in a project like this is to jump over to the Channels Palette and look for the channel with the most contrast. So in our case, we want the channel with the darkest cat and the brightest background, which turns out to be the blue channel.

Make a copy of the blue channel, select it and hit Command-L to bring up a Levels Adjustment. Darken the shadows and the midtones so that there is a crazy amount of contrast like in the image below. Be careful to no go too far with this adjustment. You’ll want to zoom in and watch the hair detail on the fringes of the fur to make sure you’re not clipping too much. It doesn’t have to be perfectly black and white at this point, some dark grays are acceptable.

At this point you encounter one of the trickiest steps of the entire process. The goal is to get as much of the cat as closest to black as you can. This is easy for the face potions and other random spots near the center, just grab a black brush and fill them in. But what about the edge of the hair?

It turns out one of the best ways to handle this task is to use a couple of unlikely candidates: the Dodge and Burn Tools. The reason these work so well is that they can accurately target certain ranges of gray extremely accurately. I set the Dodge Tool to target the highlights and the Burn Tool to target the shadows, grab a medium size soft brush and make my way around the edges of the image, burning shadows and dodging highlights until I like the level of detail that I’m seeing.

This may sound like a time-intensive task, and it can be for some images, but in truth the Dodge and Burn Tools feel like magic when you’re using them and take much of the work out. I was able to come up with a great looking silhouette in only a minute or two.

Once you’re done here, hit Command-Shift-I to inverse the channel so that the cat is white and the background is black like in the image below. Remember that, in masking, white is opaque and black is transparent.

Converting the Channel to a Mask

Now that we have a channel that accurately represents what we want from a mask, how do we convert it? There are a few ways to do this but the easiest is just to Command-click on the channel to load a selection. With a selection loaded, return to your cat layer and click the New Mask button. That’s all there is to it!

Defringing the Mask

As you can see, despite a super detailed mask, we still have some white fringing occurring around the edges. Getting rid of this can literally take hours of tedious work if you don’t know what you’re doing. For starters, we can use the fantastic new Masks Palette in conjunction with Refine Edge to make some live adjustments to our mask.

Utilizing these tools properly takes practice. I won’t cover them closely now because it would take so much time but I encourage you to dig in and play with all of the controls to get a feel for what they do. Often, you can patch up a rough edge in seconds with these sliders, but with our cat project I wasn’t really getting any results that I liked so I cancelled out this operation altogether.

Instead, I went to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and selected Matting>Color Decontaminate. This is an almost hidden command that has the ability to yield some amazing results. As you can see in the image below, it went a long way toward reducing our halo. Note that this command is actually destructive so you should always duplicate your layer before using it.

From here, the last trick I use is to look for problematic areas and actually run the clone brush over the fringes. The mask keeps everything looking nice and cloning replaces unnatural colors with those from the actual fur of the cat in other places. Compare the back and head of the cat in the image below to that above to see the improvement.

Finishing Up

From here it becomes a factor of how much time you want to spend refining your result. With complicated masks like these there is always room for improvement but you’ll find that the point of diminishing returns on your time spent becomes easier and easier to spot as your skill level improves.

The technique we just discussed is just to give you a taste of how advanced masking can become. There are a ton of different types of images to mask and therefore a million different tricks and techniques to figure out along the way which can be mixed and matched on a per-project basis. Practice makes perfect, just be bold and never become intimidated by a masking job that seems too complex. Think through the process one step at a time and find ways to pull out the detail you need.

Conclusion

To sum up, there are two primary types of masks in Photoshop: layer masks and clipping masks. Layer masks use values of gray to assign levels of transparency to specific portions of a layer or group of layers while clipping masks use the transparency of one layer to define that of a different layer or group of layers.

Superman - My Starter Pack

Inspired by @davidmann95‘s own post, where he does basically the same thing. recommending people where to start in regards to reading Superman.

I do think that to begin with, this is still what I’d read in general about Superman. and what appeals to me in terms of being about the character.

1. All-Star Superman

Whats It’s About: Superman saves the first-manned mission to the sun, led by Dr. Leo Quintum of P.R.O.J.E.C.T., which has been sabotaged by Lex Luthor via him sending a genetically modified suicide bomb in human. Superman manages to save the ship and it’s crew, but ends up powered beyond the norm to fatal levels. as a result, he’s now dying due to solar overexposure. leaving Superman with only a year to live. this is his last deeds.

Why You Should Read It: It’s Superman at his greatest and finest, written and drawn by what could be debated is the greatest writer and artist duo in all of history. it’s not just the best Superman story of all time, it is factually and objectively the best superhero story period (to quote Davidman). on one hand, I’d recommend reading this last because it does kinda read better the more you know and like Superman. on the other, I recommend to just drop in blind because it’s an out of continuity book that doesn’t require you to have read the mainstream comics.

2. Grant Morrison’s Action Comics

What’s It’s About: The debut of a depowered Golden Age-esque social crusader Superman clad in a T-shirt and Jeans in the modern day, fighting corrupt politicians and rich people suppressing the weak and the oppressed. before basically moving to the Silver Age by fighting the very alien Brainiac after spending his career so far as a Bully Hunter. signified by him starting to work at the Daily Planet and moving from the Daily Star. as the forgotten first Superman, Adam Blake returns to Earth to take away Lois’ niece, Susan Tompkins before the planet is destroyed. Superman decides to kill off Clark Kent because he feels he outgrew him, while ultimately coming to blows with Captain Comet and convincing the latter to turn over a new page at the end of their fight. Vyndktvx finally enacts his plan, attacking the Man of Steel at all points of his life alongside the Anti-Superman Squad and their wild card, Super-Doomsday. though Superman ultimately wins through tricking him to say his name backward by having the entire Earth including himself say their names backwards thus banishing Vyndktvx back to the Fifth Dimension.

Why You Should Read It: It’s the definitive Superman blueprint, merging the character’s Pre-Crisis life from the three eras he was in: Golden, Silver and Bronze ages with some small aspects of his Post-Crisis history (Super-Doomsday for example), creating a definitive Superman who spans all of his life in a consistent manner.

3. Greg Pak’s Action Comics

What’s It’s About: Superman reunites with childhood friend as well as one-and--off love interest Lana Lang years later, after her departure from Smallville when they were teenagers.as they investigate an ancient civilization that lives deep beneath the earth that is full of bizarre and appears dangerous while attempting to decide which race needs their protection the most, humanity or the underworlders? two months later, after the conflict with Doomsday that resulted in Superman almost turning completely into the beast itself as well as Brainiac’s latest attack. Lana and her lover John Henry Irons travel to Smallville for a vacation, only to discover that the graves of her parents have been mysteriously dug up and the corpses gone.Lana’s parents seemingly back from the dead as zombies, meanwhile. Clark Kent has started placing more importance on his secret identity, helping rebuild Metropolis even while he has a feeling that something appears off. so he flies to Smallville to check on it, only to discover a mysterious fog surrounding it and that he can’t initially get through, getting teleported miles away when he tries to get in.ultimately Superman does make it through, discovering that the dead are seemingly walking amongst the living, not just the Langs. to his horror, he now discovers he can’t make it out. all the while, something is wrong with Smallville’s denizens who appear to have developed psychic ablities as a monster from the Phantom Zone called the Ultra Humanite has made it through to Earth, feeding off the fear, terror and darkness found in everyone. including Superman himself.

Why You Should Read It: One is an Science Fantasy story starring Superman and Lana Lang also taking inspiration from sources like Indiana Jones, which is awesome. As they investigate an ancient civilization that has secretly existed beneath the Earth all this time, the other is what a sci-fi horror starring Superman as the main protagonist look. being bone-chilling enough while still being more than inspiring enough, Greg Pak also is the only writer who truly expanded on in some fashion what Morrison set up in his own run. allowing Superman to save the day while also giving him pyrrhic victories.

4. Batman/Superman

What’s It’s About: A still young Superman and Batman have their first initially forgotten meeting, where they initially fight against each other. before being transported into another parallel world by a rogue goddess, while some things appear the same, others appear distinctly different. The two rookie heroes end up meeting and teaming up with older more experienced versions of themselves to get home. Years later, the World’s Finest remember said alternate earth with the alternate versions of themselves. They’re given a second chance to save Earth 2 and it’s version of the the Trinity, though they ultimately choose not to intervene too much. Angering Kaiyo, who teleports the three of them back to Prime Earth while also erasing the memories of Superman and Batman. leaving them completely different people than they normally are. And it’s up to Lois Lane to convince the amnesiac Batman as well as a Superman who’s lacking his moral compass to remember who they truly are. After that, a mysterious foe obsessed with Superman who knows all of his secrets begins killing all those who ever stood by him just to thoroughly his true target. Superman now has a Joker of his own, It falls to the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel to track the murderous madman and stop him, but with no real clues and leads to follow will they ultimately be outsmarted?

Why You Should Read It: Greg Pak begins his winning streak, developing Superman and Batman into the heroes they’re meant to be as they become the best friends they normally are. from a rough-and-tumble social crusader Idealist Superman and a Batman who has no interest in running his company, preferring to spend his time being in disguise as he watches kids beating each other up in the streets.

5. Superman: Birthright

What’s It’s About: Clark Kent is a man with no direction who is a freelance reporter, fighting for truth and justice. Traveling the world, he tries to get a handle on what it is that he wants to do. But with the tragic passing of the Ghuri political leader and human rights activists Kobe Asuru he decides to return home, having decided to learn more about his alien heritage. Opting to become Superman, he takes the cloth from his ship and turns it into a costume. transforming Clark Kent into a disguise alongside it. He moves to Metropolis, getting hired by the Daily Planet.

Why You Should Read It: It’s the best canon origin story for Superman, bringing back his teenage-hood friendship with Lex Luthor. Making Clark Kent accepting of his alien heritage once more after Byrne changed it so Superman completely disowned the fact he was from Krypton. it manages to humanize the character while not changing him to the point that he’s completely unrecognizable or that you forget that this is Superman.

6. Superman: American Alien

What’s It’s About: Superman as one of us, done correctly. Clark Kent here is the true identity, with Superman being a pair of tights and nothing more. seven important events from Clark’s life that shape the way he thinks without even realizing it sometime, such as realizing that it’s OK to be strange. realizing that only he can help in certain scenarios, learning to expand his horizons. deciding to finally use his powers actively to help people, his first encounter with a supervillain. the power going to his head, not thinking about the implication. becoming obsessed with Krypton which leads to him being called out on it, learning to move on and accept the fact that he’s been raised as a human, on Earth even if in his mental state.

Why You Should Read It: It’s seven disconnected tales from all through out Clark Kent’s life, from when he’s eight to when he’s around 25. Citing his development into Superman, that he is still just so damn nice that he just wants to help with no strings attached or have to be manipulated into. With no tragedy influencing him, that he can just no longer stand aside and watch as people die. so he stops doing so, beginning to actively help because he just wants to. Because that is his better nature.

7. Superman: Kryptonite Nevermore

What’s It’s About: An experiment turns all Kryptonite on Earth to iron, rendering Superman truly invulnerable,but a mysterious doppelganger of the Man of Steel with the ability to steal his powers and weaken him is born as a result, can Superman save his adopted home planet and defeat this devious clone of his without coming into direct contact with it so as to not destroy the Earth?

Why You Should Read It: Also more accurately known unofficially as The Sandman Saga, this is the story that kicked off the Bronze Age era of Superman. toning down Superman’s insane strength to more manageable levels, as he was no longer able to juggle planets and fly to the other end of the universe with ease. additionally making him somewhat wiser and a more human character.

8. Superman Smashes the Klan

What’s It’s About: The year is 1946. Teenagers Roberta and Tommy Lee just moved with their parents from Chinatown to the center of Metropolis, home to the famous hero, Superman. Tommy makes friends quickly, while Roberta pines for home. Then one night, the family awakens to find their house surrounded by the Klan of the Fiery Kross! Superman leaps into action, but his exposure to a mysterious green rock has left him weak. Can Roberta and Tommy help him smash the Klan?

Why You Should Read It: An important tale about the dangers of genuine racism that is especially relevant nowadays, what with Trump’s supporters running rampant and lashing out at black people due to their skin color & nothing more.

Rookie

Summary : When the Organization XIII welcomes their latest member, Number XII, it is Demyx’s job to teach her how missions work. Not that any of them really wanted to team up. Word Count : 1450 Read on FFNet | AO3

Two black figures stepped into the Beast’s Castle, glancing here and there. The silence between the two of them did not last long.

“So, your name is Larxene, is that right? Where are you from?”

She glared at him, but didn’t answer.

“Riiight. I can get that you wouldn’t tell. I mean, you were in such a state when Xemnas brought you… Had a tough life, didn’t you?”

“Listen, rookie, we’re here for a mission. So we do that mission, we come back to the Castle, and meanwhile, you only speak to teach me what I need to know about the specificities of being a Nobody. Got it?”

“Rookie?” He put his hand on his chest in a dramatic way. “You’re the rookie! My name is Demyx, and I will have you know that I’ve been here since…”

“Whatever. Let’s get over with this.”

Demyx sighed, before having a mischievous smirk. “You know what? It’s true that you should learn. How about you take a look inside this castle, while I have a look around it? That way, you won’t have to hear me talk to you.”

She shrugged. “Fine with me.”

He watched her go into the Castle. She had been there for two days only. Hard to forget that haunted look on her face when she was introduced, glancing everywhere as if she was scared, almost jumping when Xigbar gave her a (violent) pat on the shoulder, and putting a knife on Luxord’s throat when he tried to be a bit too familiar with her. Demyx had no idea what her story was, but that didn’t sound really fun. He remembered when he turned into a Nobody, and shivered. He had not slept for a week. But he didn’t worry - soon enough, she’ll feel better.

Making sure she was in the Castle and couldn’t see him, he settled for a nap. He remembered how fast she was with her knives, so there was nothing to worry about. Today’s mission was about doing some reconnaissance inside the Castle, anyway. The rumours had it the Prince living here had a very dark heart, attracting lots of Heartless, so it might be useful for them later on. All she had to do was sneak in, try to find this Prince, see if his heart really was that dark, and that would be the end of the mission.

He dozed off for around twenty minutes. When he opened his eyes, the wind was getting colder, and he sneezed.

“Man, I want to RtC now… Why isn’t she back yet?” With a yawn and a sigh, he decided to see what was going on. Surely, she had not attacked the Prince, had she? That sounded pretty much like something she would do. Demyx always feared she’d slit his throat for no reason.

He carefully pushed the huge door, which luckily didn’t creak. Slowly coming in, wary about any suspicious move, he relaxed when he realised the main hall was empty. He could hear voices from behind some doors, but they were all closed. He was safe.

Looking around, he had no idea where she could have gone. This place was huge, and he hoped he wouldn’t have to look everywhere. He was the lazy one and he had a reputation to keep.

He didn’t even had to push the door to know where she was. The Dancing Hall reeked of Darkness. Whatever was in there - it was bad. It wasn’t a couple of Shadows or other minor Heartless. It was something big. He entered the room, holding his breathe in.

There was a Darkside in the middle of the room. A gigantic Darkside. Demyx scanned the room until he spotted Larxene, sitting against the wall as if she’d been violently thrown against it. The monster prepared its Dark Orbs attacks, and she wouldn’t be able to dodge it.

“DANCE, WATER, DANCE!”

He summoned thirty water clones, distracting the monster and luring its attacks. Demyx dashed to the newbie.

“Larxene, are you okay?”

“Is this… a nightmare?” She groaned. “One you is already too much… So that many…”

He chuckled. “Well, they are saving your sorry life right now, so be a bit more grateful. Can you stand?”

He helped her up, and she staggered. “What is that thing? I threw my knives at it, but it didn’t… Watch out!”

The clones were finally gone, and the monster attacked them instead. Demyx played another few notes on his sitar, summoning waves that attacked the monster.

“Magic works better than physical attacks on them.”

“I don’t know how to use Magic.”

He winked. “Then today’s the best day to learn!” He quickly explained the basics of it. “There are times where magic is the best weapon. I’m specialised in Water-based magic, but here, try different spells!”

He summoned new clones to distract the Darkside while she was trying some spells. She was terrible with water spells, or fire ones. But that Thunder she threw… Demyx let out an appreciative whistle. “Not bad, not bad at all! Electric type, uh? How about we try a little something, then?”

He let all of his clones melt away, so that the heartless was surrounded with water. Larxene, getting his plan, smirked. “Here we go, then!”

Casting her last Thunder spell, she fried the Darkside which finally disappeared into a cloud of Darkness.

“Alright, we’re done there. Let’s RtC. Larxene?” He looked at her and frowned. Exhausted from the fight, and since she wasn’t much used to magic yet, she had collapsed, sitting on the floor.

“Come on. Let’s go back home now. You did well.” He put her arm around his shoulders, lifting her up and helping her to walk. “Here. Take that.” He pulled out a potion from one of his pocket, and she drank it in silence.

“Don’t think that makes us friends.” She finally said, as Demyx had opened up the portal to go back to the Castle.

“Uh?”

“You, helping me. Teaching me. We are not friends. I despise all of you, and I think I despise you the most. So don’t you think we have bonded or anything.”

He shrugged. “That’s fine with me. You are pretentious and arrogant, with too much pride. We are not meant to be friends. Heck, we don’t have a heart, so can we really have friends anyway?” He smiled. “But you still did well today, and I guess I’m glad you are okay. Welcome to the Organization XIII, number XII. Even if you hate me the most, remember that I might be one of the best listeners around… If you ever need to.” He winked, before getting back to his usual bored face. “Alright, let’s go back. I need a nap.”

As soon as they stepped back into the Grey Area, Saïx was there, waiting for them. If he noticed their damaged coats, he did not mention it.

“Demyx, I’ll be awaiting for your report by tomorrow morning. Don’t be late, this time.”

“A report?” Axel snorted from one of the couches behind. “Let me sum up what probably happened. They went there, then Demyx found a stupid reason for them to split up, the rookie did all the work while that lazy guy took a nap! You don’t seriously think he would ever fight, now, do you?”

Demyx shrugged. “Yup, that’s what happened. Since you know it all already, does that mean I don’t have to write that report?”

“What? But…” Larxene frowned, but Demyx smiled at her before interrupting her.

“And she’s pretty good! Found a way to master magic on her own. She even defeated a Darkside by herself. You know, I think you should give her all of my dangerous missions. She’s doing better than I’ll ever do.”

Saïx glared at them. “Report by tomorrow morning. Am I clear?”

Demyx sighed, nodding and pouting. Saïx left.

“Why would you lie about that?” Larxene was angrily whispering. “Don’t you want them to see you as competent?”

Demyx chuckled. “Heck no! Competent means dangerous jobs. I’m cut for reconnaissance. I’ll gladly let you steal all of the spotlight. Enjoy your time here, Twelve!”

She punched him on the shoulder with violence. He winced. “Hey! What was that about?”

“I hate you, and one day, I swear I will kill you. Everything in you annoys me. But… Thanks for today.”

He smiled, shrugging and walking away.

“Whatever. Now you’ll get tough jobs and I can enjoy some more naps. That was just long time investment!’

As he left, Larxene indulged him a smile. Back then, nobody knew how rare these would be… And how ironic she would only give them to the one she had sworn she’d kill.

This is no real surprise to me, but Larxene is confirmed to return in KH3, and I’m super excited. I really don’t dislike her, although I am aware she wasn’t the kindest one around, I still thought she was funny (the mangas might have helped with that). Anyway, the shameful ship is back! (Just kidding I’m not even ashamed of shipping them XD)

Video games that should get a reboot or sequel

I have made posts about TV shows that should be either be rebooted or get a sequel series so I thought I do one on videogames. This post goes into detail on the games so beware of spoilers.

I’ll start with reboots first.

Jak and Daxter- A popular game series made by Naughty Dog about a teen and his otter/weasel creature friend saving the world from great evil. The series at first was like an average platformer game but later got more dark and grim, which was interesting. There hasn’t been a new Jak and Daxter game since 2005 and since reboots are popular maybe they do it for the Jak and Daxter series.

Crash Bandicoot- Another popular game series by Naughty Dog about a mutated bandicoot that goes on adventures to save the day from the villain Dr. Neo Cortex. Its been confirmed that a company is releasing a N Sane trilogy, featuring updated versions of the games. Because of this I feel like the game company should reboot the series since if they have the time to redo 3 of the game then maybe they will do an actual reboot.

Conker Bad Fur Day- A game made by Rare about a squirrel named Conker who after getting drunk gets lost in an odd forest and goes on an adventure to get out and get to his girlfriends place. The game was know for its funny mature content, even though it was labeled a E rated game at the time but made it mark as an interesting game, even getting a revision for the Xbox. There were attempts to get the game a sequel but they never worked out, but in this day an age where reboots seem to be popular maybe they should do it for Conker’s Bad Fur Game.

Bully- A game made by Rockstar Games, the company who makes the GTA games. The game, as the title states, is about a teenage bully named Jimmy who after being dropped off at his new school (which takes place in the GTA universe) decides to become the leader of the school by fighting all the clicks of the school and uniting them under his leadership. The game though dated was fun and had a lot of similar elements from the GTA franchise. There was a remastered edition released in 2008 but I think a reboot of the game would be interesting, plus it a good change then getting another GTA game or GTA DLC.

Earthworm Jim- A game about a worm that after getting a suit fights evil. It had 2 good games but its fame was over after its game for the Nintendo 64, I think a reboot would be interesting to see.

Dragon’s Lair- a popular arcade game in the 80s that changed gaming in general. The series was so popular that it got several sequels and has been remade for several consoles. The series is so popular that the creator of the game did a Kickstarter in 2016 with the goal of it to make the game into a movie and it reached it goal, and is planning on coming out in 2018. Because of this maybe a company should make a reboot of the game, with new gameplay, an alternate plot and challenges.

Half Life franchise- A popular game series by Valve, about a theoretical physicist named Gordon Freeman who worked for the Black Mesa company when one day a test they were running, causes a rift to another dimension to open. Creatures come out and start to kill everyone causing Gordon to fight the creatures off and close the portal to the other dimension. He succeeds but a mysterious man comes out and tells him he will be needed again in the future. In the next game he awakes some time later to find that another alien species has taken over the Earth and has enslaved the Human race. Its Gordon’s role, with the help of some friends to take down the alien force, which they do but, through the events of Half Life 2 episodes 1 and 2 they will face the full force of the alien race. The goal from then one was for Gordon and his lady friend to head to the location of the lost ship from Aperture Science, cause Half Life is in the same universe as Portal. Fans have been waiting for a new installment to come out but nothing has been announced since 2007. I bet if Valve reboots the series, all the unanswered questions from the franchise can finally be answered.

Now for sequels

Alien vs. Predator (2010)- This was a ok game that consist of 3 stories that intertwined with each other. The game takes place on an alien planet where humans, led by and evil scientist are breeding xenomorphs, of course one escapes and goes on a rampage on the planet trying to get to its queen. To contact this the Marine come in to stop them but are slowly killed off, only for a Rookie to fight off the alien forces, which he does while at the same time trying to get off the planet with the survivors. The 3rd story is about the Predators species, where one is there to prove his worth as a warrior only to go on a mission to stop the humans form defiling there temple. After finding some items from a legendary predator he decides to destroy the temple so the humans, specifically the evil scientist from discovering their tech. All the stories end with the 3 characters you play going to the Xenomorph homeworld. Since then the people who made the game have been trying to get a sequel off the ground but there is no word of it as of yet.

I bet if they fixed the game mechanics a bit, the game can be better.

PlayStation All Star Battle Royale- This was the PlayStation’s version of Super Smash bros. where you play as popular PlayStation icons. The game got good ratings and there is rumor of a sequel coming in the future, which I hope does. If it does I can see it featuring a new villain and let you play as not only the characters from the previous games, but also new characters that weren’t in it.

Deadpool- A game made by High Moon studios about the popular superhero Deadpool going on a wacky adventure. In the game there is a hint that the game will get a sequel and with the popularity Deadpool has, it might/should happen in the near future.

Dante’s Inferno- This game was made by the people who have made the Dead Space franchise. It was an alternate version of the poem of the same name where instead of Dante “touring” hell, he fights his way through it to save is beloved from Lucifer. Spoiler alert, he does and ends up in Purgatory but ends with a snake forming out of the weird cloth Dante had on his chest the whole time, hinting at a sequel. There had been rumors of a sequel but there is no word on if its true or not.

If they ever do make a sequel I have this idea that it features Dante gong up the mountain but as he gets farther up he notices that Purgatory is becoming a lot more like hell, which not only give the snake a role in the game but also spice up purgatory, cause the poem, though full of kinds of torture like in Inferno, aren’t as bad. Plus it states at the beginning of the actual poem that a snake is present only to be driven off by angels, so maybe the in the game the snake instead of being chased off possess one of the angel, leading Lucifer the opportunity to corrupt purgatory in order to get into Paradise.

Dead Space franchise- Dead Space is an action horror game that takes places in the distant future. You play as Isaac Clarke an engineer who after finding and destroying a Marker, a device that mutates anything near it into a multi limbed zombie like creatures, becomes a key target to a religious group who worship the Markers and those who sent them. Turns out the religious group made the Marker he destroyed and brainwash him to make them another one only to later destroy it. In the last game Dead Space 3, Isaac teams up with another guy and goes to a planet to discover that the Markers were sent by living moons, one is which above the planet there on. After a religious leader turned off the machine that kept the moon from attacking, Isaac and the other guy destroy it, only to discover that it sent a message to its brothers to attack Earth. The stories continues in a DLC that ended with the 2, after fighting about if they should return to Earth, head to Earth only to be on a collision with one of them. I believe Dead Space 4 should come out cause not only did Dead Space 3 make good sales but we also deserve a good ending for the franchise.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed franchise- A game about Darth Vader’s secret apprentice who slowly turns to the light side of the force and throughout the 2 games uses his powers of both the light and dark side to fight the Empire. The 2nd game (at least its light ending) ended on a cliffhanger hinting to another sequel but sadly never came to be. I think with the release of the new Star Wars trilogy by Disney, the people who make the games should make a Force Unleashed III.

Sly 4- Sly 4 was a long awaited game for fans of the Sly Cooper Franchise, as it came out 8 years after Sly 3, though it was made by a different gaming company. For those who don’t know the series is about a Raccoon named Sly Cooper who along with his friends Bentley and Murray pulling off cappers together. In Sly 4, Sly and his gang had to travel through time to save Sly’s ancestors, which is a part of the games history, from a great evil. I won’t give away the entire ending but it did give a hint that there was/is going to be a Sly 5 in the future. So far there is no confirmation of a Sly 5 but the original makers have given their approval to the idea. I believe Sly 5 should be made so they can finally wrap up the series.

Lego Star Wars III: Clone Wars- Traveller’s Tales, or Tt has been making lego games of classic franchises for years, and will probably still do this for many years to come, though I am surprise that they never made a sequel game to the Lego Star War: Clone Wars game. The game was based on the 2008 Star Wars: Clone Wars show, as each level was based on an episode from the show, where you play through it as the characters from that episode. I’ve compared the ratings of this game to other games and it looks like it sold just as well as any other Lego game from Tt so I find it weird that they never made a sequel, especially when more then enough season to make a sequel. Maybe they’ll consider doing one after they make games of the other star wars movies that will come out, or maybe one that has episodes from Star Wars: Rebels in it.
