do you have any recommendations for someone interested in memoirs? I’d love to read one but I’m not sure where to start
yessss okay i feel like we’re in such a good era of celebrity memoirs specifically and i feel like they all get talked about a lot and for good reason (my faves have been julia fox’s down the drain, elliot page’s pageboy, jeannette mccurdy’s im glad my mom died, michelle zauner’s crying in h mart, little weirds by jenny slate etc etc etc all of the obvious ones) and also less recent but carrie brownstein’s hunger makes me a modern girl and kim gordon’s girl in a band are two of my all-time favorite musician memoirs
but then also there’s a lot of good non-celebrity memoirs that i’ve read over the last couple of years that have stuck with me since i read them (i recommend looking up trigger warnings for most of these since they all deal with pretty heavy subjects)
the collected schizophrenias by esme weijun wang
jane: a murder by maggie nelson
molly by blake butler (especially big trigger warnings for this one!!)
never silent: ACT UP and my life in activism by peter staley
strip tees by kate flannery
being lolita by alisson wood
the undying by anne boyer
grief is for people by sloane crosley
and also most obvious answer of all time but both the year of magical thinking and blue nights by joan didion really truly do live up to the hype!!!!
and one more thing is that my favorite podcast of all time is literally called celebrity memoir book club and they have gotten me to read a lot of memoirs i probably wouldn’t have picked up otherwise!!!! they cover just about every celebrity who has a memoir (good or not) and they’re very fun girls and i enjoy listening to them a lot!!!! i haven’t read it yet but their episode on britteny griner’s memoir made me cry and i’m really excited to get into it once my library has it available lol

Time was a weird thing lately, there were days the time seemed to be stuck, looking that old family clock on the wall saying its just passed a minute or two, while other days the girl would blink and the sun had set already. What was the responsible for that lost notion? Boredom maybe. Who new really?
Today was one of the first example, the clock was ticking as slow as a drop of water from a foggy shower running down the dry wall. A Saturday of all days. Hailey was trying to read her new book, "the duke and I", but not even the angst romance writting was enough to keep her attention for more than a few moments. The girl caught herself reading the same page for the 6th time before giving up on the idea for the time being, her mind was looping aeound trying to decide what to do next, the boys were outside playing lacrosse, Ali was talking something with Derek upstairs and she was seriously considering taking a nap at that point.
It was when a Scream cut through the trees, it was not so loud but it was clearly a scream and it came from the woods, the whole pack dynamic changed in a second, bats on the floor, hailey heard the door upstairs open and the footsteps coming down. "What was that?" Alisson asked and Scott and Henry answered together "it was a scream", they all looked at each other and knew what to do.
A few minutes would pass till Derek and Hailey find the hole in the ground where a woman was trapped, she seemed scared and possibly hurt. "Hey, hi, Are you okay?" Hailey asked besides her father distrust in the whole situation.

For me, the real end of Teen Wolf is episode 10 of season 6.
Seriously, everything was closed. Our characters finishing high school, Stydia together, Stiles and Scott passing the baton to the younger ones and finally Stiles and Scott in the jeep hearing about a dead body found in the woods. The circle was complete.
The rest is just fanfiction.
I didn't like Scott and Malia, hello Scott's wait for Kira... 🙄 Not to mention the delirium of giving them a Stydia kiss in the 6x20, which calms Scott enough for him to heal and regain his sight, all so that Alisson would be back in the movie like the ultimated great love.
Break Stydia ?! Wtf ?! I saluted the performance of the Holland Roden, but this storyline is farting. Let Lydia and Stiles be fucking happy !
Even if let's be realistic in view of Jeff's words, he will put them back together at some point or another if there is a sequel.
Derek who dies ? Damn what shit.
Anyway, for me, after the 6x10, the series is stopped. In my mind Stydia ended up happily married with children, and Scott found Kira !
I loved Allison and her relationship with Scott, but she died years ago, I cried so much for her character when she died, I regretted her, but I ended up mourning, like all the other characters ! His character was very much dead. (So is it me or did the actress have plastic surgery ?)
Anyway, The series still exists. Do not be demoralized by this stupid film.

I picked up Being Lolita on a whim while I was perusing the shelves of my local library during a study break. I read the first 3 chapters at the library and knew immediately that I was going to check it out. Being Lolita is an amazing memoir in which the author Alisson Wood, beautifully and intricately included the story of Lolita throughout the novel, and how it became her life. Wood’s relationship with her teacher not only reflected that of Dolores and Humbert Humbert in Lolita, but was directly inspired by it. The Teacher, which is how she refers to him throughout most of the novel, even has her read Lolita while she is still in high school. He tells her about how great of a love story it is, and that she is his "Lolita." This book made me feel so many different emotions, as I’m sure you can infer by what I just told you. But, one of my favorite things about this novel was that the author purposefully made it 3 parts because Lolita is only 2 parts. (Spoilers for Lolita ahead) Right before the third part actually starts, Wood mentions how Lolita isn’t 3 parts because by the end of part 2 everyone is dead, including Dolores. But, there is a part 3 of her memoir because she survived, and that was one of the most beautiful parts of the novel. As I mentioned in my review of this book on StoryGraph, I am not presenting this book with a star rating because it is too intimate and vulnerable to be given a quantitative rating. I could go on and on about this novel.
Quotes Ahead !!
“When I talk to the ones who stand out the most–the girls who are sad and talented and looking for help without ever actually saying that–I realize: when I blossomed under the attention and care of my teacher, I was asking for the support I desperately needed. I wasn’t asking to be f*cked.”
“Sometimes a jolt will run through my chest in the classroom, a flash of old hurt cut open. What my life could have been. And then I breathe and say inside a refrain, a spell of resilience I cast upon myself as a reminder. Lolita is dead. I survived. I survived.”
