C4: Alissa Part 2
This feels like the day her whole life had been waiting for. If she makes a discovery today, It will all be worth it. It’ll mean papers, grants…employment? Anything is possible. The sword she promised to bring is on the passenger seat. She pulls her Thad-Cu’s Jeep into the long parking lot made for tour buses. It’s empty today save for a yellow and blue police car. She grabs her hoodie from the back and covers(what she now realizes is) the very illegal sword.
“Can I help you?” the cop says through his window.
“Hi, I’m Alisa Wood, I have a permit to…”
“Oh yeah,” He says looking at the paper. “Go ahead,”. The cop waives her past with a bored expression. ‘That was painless’ she thinks, parking the jeep as close as she can to the walking path.
She unloads the contraption with care. Her device is about the size of a minifridge, and twice as heavy. It's a white-painted plywood base and a tinted plexiglass dome over the top. She secures it to a hand truck she brought with her, and begins wheeling it to the site.
The hill has a gentle slope, but it makes this a trying task. ‘I shouldn’t have run this morning’, she thinks. She gets to the top of the hill and sets up the machine. Tests run, pictures taken, tests run again, tests run again. 5 minutes until the start of the eclipse.
From time to time, a car enters the parking lot, they talk with the cop, turn around and leave. She counts them to try to keep from testing the equipment again. 4, 5, 6…6 talks to the cop, and isn't leaving, but the police car does. A motorbike looks like it's parked now. It's hard for Alisa to see what's going on. A man in a brown jacket is dismounting, grabbing a bag, and walking up the hill. ‘Oh no!’ she thinks, ‘Someone else had the same idea. My hypothesis is tanked. Wait, he doesn't have any instruments?’
A moment passes as he walks up the hill.
“Hello,” he says in an American Accent, “My name is Roger. You must be Alissa Wood.” It wasn't a question
“Can I help you?” Alisa replies, suspicious.
“I'm here to offer you a job, pending a short interview process.” Alisa tries to reply, but the combination of stun and suspicion only leaves an open mouth silence. “I've looked into your research on the plane here and made a few calls. You're onto something here.”
“I didn't apply to any…I am?! How could you possibly?!”
The sky begins to darken, and the earth begins to tremble. The stones of Stonehenge are old, and worn, and many have fallen. As the shadow of the eclipse crosses each block, a spectral image of its original glory glows.
*Tink Tink Tink Tink*
The pendulum in Alyssa's contraption is knocking on the side of its shell, toward the monument. In the center of the phantom stone circle, there is a smaller semi-circle of sets of 3 stones. 2 vertical, and one laid on top of them, creating a series of five doorway-like structures. The center of those doorways begins to fill with red fog lit by sparks of energy.
Alissa is torn between terror and fascination at this incredible confirmation of her theories. Yes, some sort of natural phenomena DID influence ancient myths!
A creature, bear-shaped, but covered in a red carapace, a giant lobster bear, emerges from the mist.
“Alissa!” Roger Shouts, as the wind is kicking up around them. “Your interview starts now!” Roger pulls a smallish black case from under his shirt. With a snap, it unfolds into a compact assault rifle.
‘And now those myths are going to kill me,’ she thinks as she runs away. ‘This eclipse and the stress of this week is causing a hallucination. Those gunshots sure sound real. I mean, that's how they get you. If the hallucinations didn't seem real, they wouldn't be a problem, would they.’
‘What's that sound?’ She thinks as she fumbles with the keys. ‘It sounds like, rustling, or flapping.’ The hoodie on the passenger seat is moving, like something struggling beneath it. The Sword?! What the hell?’ She looks back and sees Roger running and diving, dodging the creature's blows. He's definitely on the defensive. “Oh no.”
Roger runs around the monument, weaving between the pillars. Not enough time to climb. This creature is fast. Bullets won't penetrate its armor. ‘Where the hell did she go?’ he thinks. The Lobsbear gets frustrated at its stalemate and rams the stone Roger is hiding behind. The 13-foot-high monolith comes crashing down, leaving an image of itself in its place. Roger dodges the falling grey tower but finds the Bearbster between him and the safety of the rocks. Backing up slowly, conserving the few rounds he has left, he knows if he runs, he's done. ‘This is not my best day.’ he thinks to himself. The creature leaps forward.
BOOM
A Jeep crashes into the creature, knocking it away from Roger. White smoke pours from the vehicle's radiator as it comes to a halt. Sword in hand, Alissa jumps from the rear hatch, using the door furthest away from whatever the hell is either confirming or ruining her research(she hasn't decided yet).
“Nice one!” Says Roger. “You cracked its shell! Where'd you get that sword from?” The creature rounds the vehicle, bleeding from its shattered side armor.
“I think it's pissed!” Alissa shouts in panic.
“Yeah, Me too!” Roger replies, aiming for one of its new openings. Alissa shoulder-checks Roger out of the way before he can fire. “What the hell?!”
“I don't know!” She shouts back. The creature stalks forward towards Alissa, teeth bared. “I have a feeling.” She lowers the sword and stands straight, looking the creature in the eye. She can feel its hot breath on her face now, its teeth black like obsidian. She places her empty hand on the closest injury. “What now? What should I do?” She says hoping someone could hear her.
“Take a deep breath.” Her Thad-cu’s voice is as clear as day, though she cannot see him. “I'll take it from here wee darling”. A rush of sensation surges from the sword, across her arms, and into the beast. She's frozen in shock as the creature's exoskeleton knits back together.
“It's alright,” she says. She feels the beast's fear and disorientation, it's far from home. It's hungry, alone, and confused. She looks over at the doorway, and the creature follows her gaze. “That's your way home sweetie, but you'd better hurry, the sun is coming out.” The beast looks at her again and blows air from its nose like a horse sometimes does. As it disappears through the mist of the doorway, she takes another deep breath. She looks back at Roger, who has a thoughtful look on his face.
“Not bad.” He says. The sun hits them as the illusion of the stones fades away, and the monument becomes inert once again. As the adrenaline fades, the sword slips from her hands. The last thing she remembers is Roger rushing to her as the horizon tips on its side.
Later, she wakes up back at her Grandfather's place…

Mermay 2023 - Ailinor The Cleric - 1
The Armorican Peninsula is a strange and wondrous place, a mist-shrouded land full of magic and mystery, where the mortal realm of Bedouar and the timeless vastness of Faerie coexist side by side, the great veil ripped apart by uncontrollable magic, causing time and space to collapse into disarray. Unearthly fog rolls in, cutting off travelers from where they came and pure magical chaos rolls across the region in great storms. Fortune can be found in the borders of Faerie to the brave and the lucky, death for the foolish.
The treacherous coast of the region, the Ar Mor Bras, is no stranger to these twists of fate, home to the lost city of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves and its accursed princess, Ahes Dahut. Throughout the ages, some individuals find themselves caught in the whirlpool of magic surrounding this mystical site, and are drawn in by the phantom bells of the sunken city and the enchanting, enticing song of those trapped by its curse....
--------------
Back in 2019, I launched a special series for Mermay, an art project to develop a small, but important part of the lore of Alvez, the world of Kroashent. The Marie-Morgane of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves are one of several merfolk races of the world. For this project, I decided to "adapt" each of the Dungeons and Dragons Character Classes into a character as they may appear in Alvez, then transform these characters into mermaids with art and short stories! Since then, I've been working hard on developing the world and the characters who live, there, even writing an ongoing novella, Kroashent: Bal des Loups, which you can read the first 3 chapters right now, for free! A lot has changed as I worked and some of the art and stories seemed like they could use an update!
--------------
Ailinor the Cleric represented a singular challenge among the original mermaids. While Yannic and Clemence's role could fit easily within Kroashent's world as their own characters, Clemence, as a cleric, had to fit within a larger context for the world: The religious and spiritual. At the time, Alvez was quite in its infancy, as the Marie-Morgane were meant to serve as one of the earliest dedicated worldbuilding challenges. The religions of the world were quite in flux, but Ailinor helped set things up for further development of the Southern Church, also known as "The Faith", the primary religious organization in Alvez.
I really like Ailinor for a few reasons. From a worldbuilding standpoint, she helps add a lot of nuance in the relationship between the faith represented by the Southern Church and the often-problematic agendas pushed by its temporal agents and their zealous interpretations of its tenants. Ailinor herself is caught between this struggle between the faith she has as a cleric and being a member of a group often vilified and hated by self-proclaimed "champions of the Faith." I wanted to make sure that, in her story, she didn't cast away a core part of her belief, but rather used it to strengthen herself. I also really like the interactions between her and Renee, the Fighter. I think they are very cute together, and their love story shows how much Ailinor has grown since joining the daughters of Ys.
As might be apparent, Ailinor's design has changed fairly dramatically compared to Yannic and Clemence. I wanted to shift her towards more recent aesthetics of the Southern Church, while keeping her general look the same. I also wanted to make her less of a physical character, with her mace, bare arms and muscles, into more of an intellectual one, a leader of Inquisition rather than one of its attack dogs.
I recently had the pleasure of working on an upcoming commission/collaboration with :icongonadthebarbarian:, a sequence set in Alvez that will eventually be made available. One of the characters, Alissa, represents the contemporary look of an agent of the Church in the 1230s (Linked below). I wanted Ailinor to reflect this new design. But Ailinor's story begins around 1100 SI, 230 years before the events of Kroashent and Alissa's story, so I needed her outfit to look a little older than Alissa's. I researched clerical aesthetics from the time of the Albigensian Crusade of Earth's 13th century, and tried to remove the sharp clean lines of Alissa's look for something from the High Middle Ages.

“Can we talk?”
She swallowed hard as they walked to the sitting room and he moved towards her. She subtly bit at her fingernail as she stood with an arm bent. It dropped and she finally spoke, attempting to keep her voice steady. “I...Dean--”
Dean stood his ground this time and shook his head a little. “Alissa, I need to tell you something and I need you to listen. Please.” His words prompted her to lift her eyes to his and he saw that she had been crying. He smiled faintly, trying to mask what, he could only guess, would be disappointment and closed the space between them and took her face in his hands, his thumb grazing her cheek. “You really don’t know, do you?” he asked quietly, searching her eyes.
Ten minutes prior...
Dean sighed as he walked down the path from Alissa’s house. She wasn’t home and the maid wasn’t sure where she’d gone. Glancing around the Settlement, he looked in the direction of his father’s house and considered going there. Instead, he turned and walked the other direction, suddenly having an idea of where he might find her and hoping he was right. Sure enough, she was leading her horse back to the stables nearly at the exact moment he stepped foot on the Cavalli estate where she kept Ash. She looked slightly windswept and lurched to a stop when she spotted him and quickly pulled her gaze away and led the horse into the stables.
Dean sighed as she continued to ignore him. “Alissa...” Sighing again and reaching a hand through his hair he took a step towards the entrance of the stable, saying, “Alissa, can we talk?”
“Now you want to talk?”
He grimaced a little. He deserved that. “I know you’re mad at me but--”
“I’m not mad at you. I’m frustrated.”
“I know,” Dean said quietly. “Look, I’m trying to fix things but it’s not something that’s easy for me to talk about.”
A look of hurt crossed her features. “It’s hard to talk about. Got it.” She threw up her hands in frustration and started to stalk past him. “Fine.”
“Alissa, don’t walk away from me.” His bluntness surprised both of them and she turned back to him.
“Why? So we can continue talking about not talking?”
“Aliss--”
“Do you have any idea how frustrating you’re being--”
“-I know but--” Dean tried to interject but was interrupted again.
“--Seriously. What the fuck--”
Before she could say anything more or have time to catch up with her thoughts, Dean suddenly took a purposeful step towards her and took her face in his hands. His lips zeroed in on hers and he silenced her with a kiss. She let out a small noise of surprise but to her own astonishment she kissed him back. Encouraged by her response he pulled her in closer, his hand moving into her hair. Starting to withdraw, he tenderly kissed her bottom lip and the corner of her mouth and drew in a deep breath that he slowly released. He kept her close, their foreheads touching and the pad of his thumb caressed her cheek, continuing to hold her face in his warm hands. His heart was racing.
Their eyes met. Finally seeming to process what happened, Alissa’s mouth opened to say something but no words came out. She remained frozen for a moment before she quickly moved away from him and she bolted out of the stable.
“Alis---” He started to call after her but his words fell short and he let out a small sigh of frustration. She vanished from sight. He rubbed at his face with his hands briefly. “No,” he decided to himself aloud, “You aren’t going to just let her walk away.” With quick steps, he left the stable and started back towards Ascalon Settlement.
Present...
Alissa looked at him blankly and opened her mouth to speak but redirected her train of thought. Her brows creased. “What’s wrong?” she asked quietly, noting his visage was riddled with disappointment and something else she couldn’t quite place.
Dean drew in a breath. Here goes nothing... ”I’m sorry, Alissa. I know you’re frustrated with me and you have every right to be. I’m sorry I kissed you. I should’ve...” he sighed and struggled to continue, dropping his gaze to the floor. “The thing is... I’m in love with you. And I have been for a long time.” He stood motionless and waited for her reaction, knowing he wouldn’t be able to take his words back.
She blinked, looking at him blankly. “Wait, what?”
He slowly lifted his head and forced himself to make eye contact with her. “I love you,” he repeated quietly, trying to decipher her expression but bracing himself for disappointment.
Alissa stood there in stunned silence and seemed to be deep in thought. Of course he loved her. He had only been desperately trying to get her attention for years and she had been too stupid to see it. “I...” her voice trailed off.
He sighed and looked at the floor again, trying to hide his disappointment. “I’m sorry, Alissa. I shouldn’t have said anything. I don’t want to make things awkward between us. If you want me to go...”
She interrupted him, putting a hand on his arm and shaking her head. “No, no. Dean...why are you sorry?” To his surprise, she was smiling when he looked at her and she touched his jaw and continued, “You don’t have to apologize for how you feel. I’m just...I wasn’t expecting...I had no idea...” Her words started to come out stammered and she let out a weak laugh. “I feel really stupid...” She sighed a little. “How long have you had feelings for me?”
“A long time,” Dean admitted. His hand reached up and brushed some of her hair behind her ear, lightly playing with the strands between his fingers. “I wanted to tell you; so many times. There were moments I was sure you would figure it out because I said too much or the wrong thing. I mean, it started out as just a stupid crush. But...the more time I started to spend with you and the better I got to know you, it grew into something more than that. And I tried to just...stop but I can’t and I don’t want to.”
Alissa let out a weak chuckle, feeling her eyes mist up. “Dean, I’m a mess. I’m bossy and I don’t listen. I’m stubborn and independent and am not good at asking for help. And that’s only scratching the surface when you take into account how self destructive I can be and my horrible track record with relationships.”
Dean looked at her calmly, a trace of amusement in his eyes and he laughed quietly. “Are you done?” he murmured. “Cause I’m hearing a lot of self deprecating and none of that makes me want you any less. Besides, you’re telling me this like I don’t already know.” He chuckled again and lightly touched her chin, prompting her face closer but he didn’t kiss her as much as he wanted to. He reached for one of her hands and gently held it in his.
She reached up to wipe at her eyes as she listened to him speak so open and honestly. Drawing in a breath, she looked at the floor. “I never realized how much I really needed you. You’ve...always been right there. Patiently waiting.”
“I never wanted you to feel like I wanted anything from you. I just wanted you to know I was here if you needed me.” He lightly touched her chin with his thumb. “I’m sorry this is overwhelming. I didn’t want it to be but I’m not sorry that I finally told you how I feel.” He glanced at the floor.
Alissa still looked stunned and was unsure what to say but she caught the look of disappointment on his face and moved in closer to him, encircling her arms around his torso. “I’m glad you told me, too,” she said quietly. “So, what happens now?”
“Well. I kind had this plan to ask you out and everything and then tell you I was hopelessly in love with you but...well. --Yeah.” He reached up a hand and lightly scratched the back of his head and let out a soft laugh. “It didn’t go as planned. I didn’t plan on kissing you in a horse stable either, but it was also the only way to get you to shut up since you wouldn’t let me get a word in edge wise.” He smiled lopsidedly.
She laughed. “I’m not sure I would’ve been any less shocked if it’d happened any other way, to be honest,” Alissa admitted. “So, where are we going on this date?”
Dean smiled broadly; boyishly. “Well. I have some plans. You free tonight?”
Alissa smiled up at him and nodded. “Yes,” she murmured.

this art is a cover for a 2e Forgotten Realms book. Who is this character and and is this place? Is it on Faerûn? Does she have a backstory? The art’s named Alissa of the Mists. Is it the Lake of Mists? And who’s Alissa? 1)This 1990 artwork is by Clyde Caldwell; I think he named the character. She’s “ALLISA of the Mists,” BTW. The backstory we came up with was that, with or without her unicorn…

Underrated Fantasy Recommendations
Prompted by a request from a reader, here are some favorites of mine that aren’t as discussed or posted about on these platforms: a quick list of underrated fantasies that I think should get more attention.
These are all underrated from my point of view and specifically on the platforms of booklr and bookstagram, rather than from a possibly more mainstream point of view.
Iron Cast by Destiny Soria: A YA fantasy standalone with strong female friendships. In 1919 Boston, hemopaths have a strong iron aversion as well as magical and mind-controlling powers. They are illegal and if caught, are imprisoned in horrific asylums; but underground clubs use the hemopaths’ powers to enhance the music and theater of the day. The magic is gorgeous, and Ada and Corrine’s love for each other sparkles as the heart of the book.
The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro: An adult fantasy set after the time of King Arthur that looks at a true love story. An old couple sets out to find their son in a land of ogres and witches. They are haunted by a mist which seems to take their memories, but as they travel onwards, they begin to worry that if they regain their memories, they’ll regain both the good and the bad memories that they experienced together. Literary, lush, and romantic, this fantasy plays on the tropes of epic fantasy but is easy to read and quick to touch the heart.
Among Others by Jo Walton: Book lovers will love this one; it’s one of those fantasy novels that really touches on the effect books can have on a life. Walton writes a complicated sense of magic, and I appreciate how she frames magic as seeming like just coincidence in the real world. It’s also a good coming-of-age and boarding school story.
My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales edited by Kate Bernheimer: Have you read every fairytale retelling under the sun? Well have forty more. It has some of my all-time favorite fantasy stories, including “The Color Master” by Aimee Bender, "First Day of Snow" by Naoko Awa, "The Mermaid in the Tree" by Timothy Schaffert, and "The Brother and the Bird" by Alissa Nutting. The stories hint at, adapt, and question stories by the Grimm brothers, Hans Christian Andersen, and more—they are easy enough to enjoy on their own, but fantasy lovers especially will recognize and rejoice in the callbacks to old tales.
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker: It seems like everyone has read The Night Circus, and yet somehow not this gorgeous, similarly lush fantasy standalone. An incredibly written fantasy novel that's also about immigration, assimilation, and belief in God. Chava, a golem whose rabbi dies at sea and who is unmoored on her arrival in New York in 1899; Ahmad, a jinni born in the ancient Syrian desert and “freed” in the city; they become unlikely friends.

So many African nations suffer the indignity of being confused for one another by Westerners, while others are reduced to infamy via tragedy: Ethiopia’s famine, the DRC’s seemingly ceaseless conflicts. It’s the nature of a continent even world leaders mistake for a country. Ignorance blotting out centuries of culture in a case of mistaken identity, proud countries incapable of stepping out from the dark shadow of a moment in their history. For Rwanda, their shadow remains the unspeakable 100-day genocide of 1994. Impossible – and neglectful – to forget, it shouldn’t prevent the outside world from seeing beyond it. In the heart of the continent, this nation of 12 million is a prime example of contemporary Africa, a model for changing perceptions.
A symbol of hope, chasing an intimate encounter with the most majestic of apes has given the country a much-needed flow of tourism, yet its sophisticated capital is a worth getting to know. Immaculately kept, Kigali is a city on the up. It’s noted as the safest on the continent (one report rated Rwanda as the ninth safest country in the world); known for its genteel landscaping and the shiny towers, afforded by the country’s buoyant economy; its line streets, kept spotless by responsible litter disposal and monthly clean-ups by the city’s citizens. A sign at Kigali airport’s arrivals reads, “The use of non-biodegradable polythene bags is prohibited”. It is illegal in the country to import, produce, use or sell plastic bags and packaging. ‘Traffickers’ might be fined or jailed, or even forced to make public confessions. An example for Africa? Here is a policy that should be an inspiration to the world.
ROA with Kurema Kureba Kwiga – by Chris Schwagga / via Culture Trip
Clean Kigali most certainly is; but that is not to say that it is without character. Kurema, Kureba, Kwiga (meaning “to create, to see, to learn” in Kinyarwanda) is a community street art project that brings colour and creativity to the streets of the capital and beyond, while aiding in important social action. Its first undertaking – painted on government buildings and public spaces – sought to address HIV-related stigma through art. Collaborating with local and international artists – including Belgian street art superstar, ROA – the project also engages in workshops, exhibitions and educational activities throughout 26 of Rwanda’s 30 districts.
Democratising art and increasing awareness for important causes, Kurema, Kureba, Kwiga joins forces with Inema Arts Center, founded by artist brothers Emmanuel and Innocent Nkurunziza, and endearing community project, Niyo Art Gallery, in gracing Rwanda with one of Africa’s most emergent art scenes. For those who want to get involved, guests at the exceedingly handsome The Retreat by Heaven can take an artist-led lesson at Nivo Art Gallery – one of a host of experiences that the boutique hotel arrange with impassioned locals.
“When we moved to Kigali 12 years ago, visitors came to see the gorillas and reflect on the past, but they didn’t stay very long,” says Heaven Boutique Hotel’s Co-Owner Alissa Ruxin. “Now, there’s live music spilling out of the cafés. Don’t miss Nyamirambo, the city’s vibrant Muslim quarter, and check out the Kimisagara Market – the Women’s Center there does walking tours.” Accompanied by a well-renowned restaurant that works closely and consciously with the local community and the Heaven Boutique Hotel, The Retreat is a fine hospitality project with social enterprise at its heart (Ruxin arrived in the country to volunteer for orphans of the genocide).
The Retreat by Heaven
Heaven is joined by a new Radisson Blu, opened as part of Kigali’s $300 million convention centre; the famed Hôtel des Mille Collines, the real Hotel Rwanda where 1,268 took refuge in 1994; and Kigali Serena Hotel in offering a high standard of accommodation for both business and leisure travellers. Out in gorilla country, though, bedding down for the night can be as exciting as an encounter with those charismatic primates. Enveloped by the drama of volcanoes and Afro-alpine forests, Wilderness Safaris’ Bisate Lodge offers experiential and conscious tourism with impeccable style; opulent forest villas coalescing breathtaking design with environmental awareness. Designed by Johannesburg-based architect Nick Plewman with input from Rwandan fashion designer Teta Isibo, the styling is like nothing you could possibly imagine, having been built into the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone. Coming soon, their Magashi Camp will arrive on the banks of Lake Rwanyakazinga, home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities.
Bisate Lodge – courtesy of Bisate Lodge
Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda’s show-stopping landscapes and rich biodiversity are an insatiable lure for tourism, its three mammoth national parks home to everything from an estimated one-third of the worldwide mountain gorilla population; to savanna animals such as giraffes and elephants; to rare and endangered plant species, including many orchids and begonias; to more than 700 species of bird; to even the gravely endangered black rhino.
The volcanic soil in the rolling hills of this diverse countryside is also a fertile, breeding ground for another much-loved species: the coffee bean. Dating back to the 1930s when Belgium’s colonial empire forced Rwandan farmers to plant an abundance of coffee trees, the country’s growers have recently switched to producing the sort of premium-grade bean your local hipster coffee joint is painstakingly brewing over handmade artisan filters. Which takes us back to Kigali, where third-wave coffee is booming as locals get to taste their world-renowned export, just as those in a Melbourne or Portland might.
Question Coffee, Kigali
With tech hubs and startups abound in the Rwandan capital, it’s no surprise that a raft of cafés would look to outside influence to heighten the beans grown in its rural regions. Sited above the Ikirezi bookshop, INZORA Rooftop Café offers views of the city and the tumbling landscape that engulfs it. First-grade coffee, too: its beans are sourced from Rwanda Trading Company’s Nyungwe washing station, where more than 2,000 farmers bring their coffee cherries to be attentively sorted, washed and dried. Sourcing its coffee from farmers throughout the country and roasting them in-house, Question Coffee is another destination for caffeine fiends, its proceeds heading back to farmer training to improve quality and livelihoods.
Speciality coffee and street art, a flourishing internationally flavoured restaurant scene and empowered local artisans, Kigali is a cosmopolitan city that surprises all who encounter it. An international feel fused with distinct Rwandan culture, it’s a fine place from which to embark on a tour of the country’s inimitable terrain. Gorillas may be in the mist, but the haze has cleared over the country’s fascinating capital.

so Icy Betch smells like vanilla cookies and conjures up a very specific 90s bitch image. and there's literal vanilla in the ingredients, and vanilla orchid. this ish smells delicious. right on that vanilla/chocolate line. maybe supposed to be liek vanilla frosting?
i’m also hearing nisipisa in my head because of the hilarious verbiage on the back. oh man. anyway-

I don't really wear looks like this but I thought I'd show off the palette! the look is a little random because i just pounced on my mail and wanted to play with it. hope someone else swatches it, no idea what i'm doing, but stick to brushes rather than fingers i think.
The amazonian clay (kaolin) is sort of an odd texture, but it turned out well in the end. I blended the edges with a neutral red brown, cuz it's 2019, and the edge turned greenish. i have to hand it to them for blendable shadows that meld into each other at least, even if they aren't buttery.
The shimmers are AWESOME wet, but can get a little difficult to place over layers of mattes just like other palettes.
I wet my lids with UD setting spray, put down a rough layer of white (which also isn't something i'd normally do but i've been watching some YT-ers do it and figured why not). the other mattes are directly on top of it with the bright green in the middle (dry then wet) with the horizonal blue as an underliner. i think i used every color to blend actually, including highlighter.. when i misted everything again, any chalkiness of the mattes melted away.

Baked Cauliflower Manchurian
Crispy panko-coated cauliflower florets are baked up and drenched in spicy gravy in this lightened-up take on cauliflower Manchurian.
I don’t have a favorite cuisine. It’s too hard to pick one! If I’m asked what my favorite is, I tend to go with whatever category the last delicious meal I’ve eaten belongs to, which means the answer changes quite a bit.
That’s why I love fusion dishes so much. The first time I was at an Indian restaurant and saw a section of the menu dedicated to Indian-Chinese dishes, I was all “huh?”
I assumed the chef dug Chinese food and was brilliant enough to incorporate Chinese elements into his Indian cooking. As luck would have it, that wasn’t the case. Indian-Chinese cuisine is a thing, and it’s pretty delicious.
What is Cauliflower Manchurian?
Cauliflower Manchurian, or gobi Manchurian, as it’s more likely to appear on a restaurant menu, is made with crispy cauliflower florets in spicy, savory sauce sauce. If you order it at a restaurant, the cauliflower will be batter-dipped and fried.
My version is baked.
What You’ll Need
The ingredient list for this one is on the longer side, as my recipes go. But don’t let that discourage you! It’s so worth it, and many of the ingredients are pantry staples.
Flour
Non-dairy milk
Soy sauce
Panko breadcrumbs
Black pepper
Cayenne pepper
Salt
Cauliflower
Neutral oil
Scallions
Garlic
Ginger
Celery
Serrano pepper (optional!)
Vegetable broth
Tomato paste
Maple syrup
Rice vinegar
Sambal oelek
Cornstarch
Cilantro
How to Make Baked Cauliflower Manchurian
Start by heating up the oven and lining a couple of baking sheets with parchment paper.
Get ready to bread your cauliflower. To make your batter, whisk up some non-dairy milk, flour, and soy sauce in a small bowl. To make your breading, stir together some panko breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in a separate bowl.
Break your cauliflower into florets, then grab a floret and dip it into the batter. Take it out and shake off any excess batter, than dip it in the breading. Keep doing this and arranging the florets on your baking sheets. When they’re all done, lightly brush or mist them with some oil.
Pop your baking sheets into the oven and bake the cauliflower until the coating is browned and crispy.
While the cauliflower bakes, make the gravy.
Heat up some oil in a small pot, then add the white parts of your scallions, along with some garlic, ginger, celery, and serrano pepper. Sauté everything for a minute or so, until it becomes very fragrant. Now add broth, soy sauce, tomato paste, maple syrup, and sambal oelek. Let the sauce simmer while the cauliflower bakes.
When the sauce is about finished simmering, stir some cornstarch and cold water together in a small cup of bowl, then add it to the sauce. Let the sauce simmer for about another minute or so, until it thickens up a bit.
When the cauliflower has finished baking, pour the sauce on top, then sprinkle it with the green parts of your scallions and some cilantro. Enjoy immediately!
Cauliflower Manchurian Tips & FAQ
This dish is best eaten right away — the breading on the cauliflower will get soggy pretty quickly! If you think you will have leftovers, try to keep the cauliflower and sauce separate, and store them that way. Reheat the sauce on the stove or in the microwave, and reheat the cauliflower in a 425°F oven until hot.
My sauce isn’t thickening? Why not? Make sure you actually bring it back up to a simmer — this can take a minute, as the cornstarch mixture can bring the temperature down a bit.
Can this recipe be made gluten-free? I haven’t tried making a gluten-free version, so I’m not sure! If you can find gluten-free vegan breadcrumbs, they can be substituted for the panko. You’ll also need to use gluten-free tamari in place of the soy sauce, and gluten-free flour — I think an all-purpose blend will work!
How can I reduce the sodium in this recipe? Try cutting back on the soy sauce or using a low sodium variety. You can also leave the salt out of the breading and use water instead of broth.
Looking for more crispy baked cauliflower recipes? Try my sticky sesame cauliflower or sticky lemon cauliflower.

Instructions
To Make the Baked Cauliflower
Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Make the batter. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, flour, and soy sauce.
Make the breading. In a separate bowl, stir together the panko breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Dip a cauliflower floret into batter, rolling it around to coat it. Remove the floret and shake off any excess batter, then transfer the floret to the breading. Roll it around to coat it.
Place the cauliflower floret on the baking sheet and repeat the process for the remaining florets.
Generously spray or brush the cauliflower florets with oil.
Place the baking sheet into the oven and bake the cauliflower until tender and lightly browned on the outside.
To Make the Gravy
While the cauliflower bakes, coat the bottom of a small pot with oil and place it over medium heat.

Bring the mixture to a boil, lower the heat, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Stir the water and cornstarch together in a small bowl or cup, then stir the mixture into the broth mixture. Bring it back up to a simmer and let it cook for about 1 minute, until it thickens up a bit.
To Serve
Transfer the baked cauliflower to a plate or bowl and pour the gravy over top. Sprinkle with cilantro and the green parts of the scallions. Divide onto plates and serve.
